wellwed, we have a thing for diy projects. re-purpose, restyle and reuse is a here motto we encourage—and a credo we ourselves wear proudly. the slow pace and organic purity of wintertime offer the perfect opportunity to take on fun diy projects and paint unique vintage treasures in a new light. dotted throughout “color palette” pages [101 - 138] you’ll find homespun diy creations you can use to put your own spin on your celebration and plan your wedding from the heart. ideas and inspiration abound in “style file” pages [143 - 181] where we’ve collected some of the best in weddings from seasons past. as the temperature drops this season, the night air becomes rich with the glitter of falling snow, and snowmen dot the yards of neighbors, we invite fall and winter couples to embrace a sense of vintage glamour that has withstood the test of time, romantic, all encompassing and grand—much like true love.

as the weather turns, fur stoles and silk scarves re-emerge from closets and dresser drawers, evoking the accessories worn by the silver screen sirens of yesteryear. ruffles and lace adorn jackets and sweaters—impractical, pretty, and utterly sweet. wool coats and suede gloves prove that classic is forever. the brilliant colors of autumn set the tone for monochromatic shades, embellished with sumptuous splashes of color, and winter’s blanket of white acts as a veritable blank canvas for playful, animated hues. “cold spell ,” page [73] our special gown and design feature, tells a similar story, of chilly winter winds, warmed up with hints of color and old hollywood glamour brought to the shores of the cape and islands. long winters are an invitation to play with the accessories of the season—scarves, hats, and mittens can be adorned with lace, ruffles, tulle, or whatever you fancy. flourishing imaginations bring about tables adorned with wool scarves page [75] or hand-knit hats embellished with crocheted flowers page [99].

there is a certain element of romance & glamour to the cape & islands’ fall & winter seasons, something that i believe to be less evident during the year’s warmer months. the lively days of spring & summer—full of garden parties, picnics & strolls along the beach—fade away, replaced by a more quiet allure. we watch the swirling leaves of autumn & wait for the first magical snowfall.

CARY HAZLEGROVE PHOTOGRAPHY: Fresh out of college and buoyed by the recommendation of a friend, Cary Hazlegrove moved to Nantucket in 1978 to embark on her soon-to-be extraordinary career in photography. “I jumped headlong into my Nantucket life, making a living doing everything from housecleaning to commercial fishing, and I photographed it all,” she says. Her skill and willingness to shoot any subject led to magazine assignments, book deals, and a widely diverse portfolio. It was in 1980 that Cary first delved into wedding photography, and today she remains the photographer of choice to document some of Nantucket’s most beautiful weddings.

“With weddings, you have one chance in a finite time frame to capture one of the most significant days in a family’s life,” she explains. In the thirty years since she arrived on the island, Cary has published thirteen books and is the artist behind the largest image library of Nantucket. Today, she’s surer than ever that her initial reaction was right, “When my feet first touched Nantucket soil, I had the profound sensation of finally being home.”

>> Cape Cod charm, a quaint atmosphere & ocean views make The Beach Plum Inn an ideal spot for weddings. vineyard viBes: Overlooking the sparkling waters of Menemsha, The Beach Plum Inn evokes memories of childhood days spent at the beach and lazy summer days in the sun. This is a place where the air is faint with the melodious chimes of an offshore bell buoy and rich with the scent of island hydrangeas, a place that awaits the weddings of local and destination couples seeking something extraordinary.

accommodations: Located among gardens on a hill overlooking the sea, the property’s single bedroom, French country-style cottages exhibit Old World appeal without sacrificing modern amenities. Many feature vaulted ceilings, exposed beams, and private porches. Additionally, the inn also offers an array of rooms within their main house, all of which boast sumptuous decor and stunning views. property perks: yoga classes + bicycle rental + basketball + tennis courts + fitness center + croquet + beachfront views.

etiquette

[with

>> unsure which wedding customs to uphold? we turned to “wediquette” expert anna post for the “something old & something new” of wedding day traditions. for more , visit anna @ emilypost.com. number one

number four

SOMETHING OLD/SOMETHING NEW:

THROWING RICE:

Traditionally, “something old” represents the bride’s family history; “something new” shows optimism for her new life; “something borrowed” represents good karma from a happily married family member; and “something blue” recalls the pre-Victorian fashion for blue as the preferred dress color, symbolizing purity. As for the sixpence, which symbolizes prosperity and good fortune, it was decimalized in 1970. Replicas can be found for sale on the internet, but given inflation you might consider a good old American quarter instead.

For years, showering the couple with rice was a symbol of good luck, but it turns out that rice is harmful to birds. A switch to birdseed had groundskeepers up in arms dealing with unwanted weeds in flower beds, and rose petals quickly become slippery and are hard to clean up. Today, clever brides arrange for streamers, flags, or bubbles and wands as cheering alternatives that don’t harm or create a mess.

number TWO YOUR DAUGHTER'S HAND:

“something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue, a silver sixpence in her shoe…” custom says

a bride should have these items on her person on her wedding day. then there are all those tossing traditions—rice, the garter & the bouquet...

* anna

post

gives modern-day brides the scoop on old traditions.

This pre-marriage consultation with your future in-laws was the de rigueur first step of the marriage process in the days when the focus of a marriage had more to do with property than love. While today’s woman makes her own decisions about marriage, it is still a courtesy for the prospective groom to talk to both of her parents about his intent to marry.

number THREe THE FIRST LOOK:

Christian custom decreed that a groom not see his bride until she walked down the aisle. In Jewish tradition, a groom places his bride’s veil over her face before the ceremony—a reference to the story of Jacob, who mistakenly married the veiled Leah instead of her sister Rachel. Today, many couples arrange a photo-op before the ceremony to capture that “first look” moment when the groom sees his beautiful bride for the first time.

number five GARTER TOSS:

This tradition harkens back to the day when wedding guests would tear off pieces of a bride’s clothing as a souvenir. Though it’s been reduced to an ornamental garter in these modern times, the tradition of a groom removing his bride’s garter and tossing it to the singleton males is losing its appeal. If it’s on your wedding program, keep it in good taste.

number six BOUQUET TOSS:

The girl who catches the bouquet is destined to marry next, which can have more women running away than hoping to catch it. Still, this remains a “must do” for most brides. Nowadays, instead of tossing the whole bouquet, a mini or breakaway “tossing bouquet” is a clever substitute. Alternatively, leaving the whole “next to be married” scenario behind, the bride may present her bouquet to her mother, sister, or maid of honor.

whatever traditions you include—be sure each one means something to you & you’re not just fulfilling them for tradition’s sake.

before the ring.

Krista Curry and Matt Ryan fell in love twice on Martha’s Vineyard: first with the island, and then with each other. Matt had recently moved to the Vineyard from Boston, and Krista, a jewelry store manager, was a local. “Matt was the cute new bartender at my friend’s restaurant,” Krista says. They began to get to know each other during casual Friday night happy hours. A few months later, Krista was celebrating her friend Danielle’s birthday. Much to Krista’s surprise, Danielle had invited Matt to join the festivities. Krista and Matt spent the night engaged in conversation and laughter. They had their first official date a week later and have been a couple ever since.

the proposal. On Christmas Eve of 2008, Krista and Matt settled in front of their Christmas tree and began making their way through a pile of presents. In the middle of opening gifts, Krista noticed a little wrapped box waiting on the coffee table. Expecting a pair of earrings she had been hinting to Matt about, she opened the box—and was stunned to see what it contained. Within minutes of placing the ring on her finger, her parents called from the Azores, with no idea that their daughter’s life was changing right then. “It was a very special moment,” she says. “It hit us all at once. We were able to share it together, even though they were so far away.” the day & design. Their wedding location was a clear choice—

Martha’s Vineyard, their ocean home, where they met and fell in love, was exactly the backdrop they needed. Nestled beneath the supporting posts and beams of the barn, their reception was filled with island charm. Krista and Matt were committed to creating a wedding that reflected their personalities and their vision of “Vineyard Rustic.” They decorated a spacious 100-yearold barn surrounded by 21 acres of hay fields and picket fences with colors reflecting the island’s natural beauty: ivory, green, and a hint of burlap. “Our dear friends put together a menu that people are still talking about.” She adds that the wedding professionals she hired offered invaluable help. “Let your professionals do what they do best. They have been to more weddings.”

Long before Julia Thaler met Peter Oslen, she knew that someday she would have her wedding on Cape Cod, where her family history reaches back to the Pilgrims. the proposal. Three years after the first of many romantic trips together, Peter planned a vacation to Virgin Gorda. On the first day, Peter and Julia’s father went sailing together. The two men were gone so long that Julia and her mother started to worry. Little did they know that not only had Julia’s father granted Peter his blessing in asking Julia to marry him, he had also helped him scope out the perfect proposal spot. The two men discovered a gazebo on a nearby beach, and Peter returned there later that day with a ring in his pocket and Julia by his side. Against the backdrop of a brilliant sunset, he got down on one knee and offered her the ring. “Julia was so surprised, but she was so excited!” Peter remembers. the ceremony. On August 14, with gorgeous skies and calm Cape

weather, a procession of nine cousins from both families lined the altar. The ceremony was a true testament to the love Julia and Peter have for their relatives. “We’d also both recently lost family members very dear to us, and their memory was duly noted in our wedding program,” says the couple. Surrounded by the warmth of their families and the fond memories of those they had lost, Julia followed the tradition of her parents and walked down the aisle at the Chapel of St. James the Fisherman. the celebration. As the couple celebrated their nuptials, it was evident

in Boston to visit the Cape, and Julia was delighted when Wellfleet’s beaches captivated Peter. “Our relationship blossomed on our early trips out to the Cape during those late September-early October weekends, where the days are warm and the nights are cold,” she says. But Peter wasn’t only falling in love with the Cape and all its plentiful oysters. He was also falling in love with the woman he would marry.

that the intense wedding planning had paid off. In addition, the couple was blessed with one of those picturesque, sunny days that the Cape is famous for. “A good friend hosted a beach party for all of the guests around lunchtime the day of the wedding, which was great,” says Julia. “Even the Chequessett reception was a complete hit, from cake-cutting during Peter’s favorite song, “Don’t Stop Believin’,” to the packed dance floor.” Having dreamed of this day since she was a little girl, Julia was delighted to discover it was even better than she had ever imagined.

Shortly after their engagement, Melissa took Eric to Nantucket, her favorite place in the world. For her, Nantucket is synonymous with family & summertime fun & she wanted to share this with her fiance.

before the ring.

When Melissa Hellenbrand and Eric Hill think back to the beginning of their love story, they still find it hard to believe that it all began as a fourth grade prank. It was April Fools’ Day when Melissa and Eric’s elementary school class decided to confuse their teacher by switching seats. As fate would have it, Eric ended up at Melissa’s desk, and the two struck up a friendship that would eventually lead them down the aisle. Though they dated other people through high school, the pair remained close friends. Years passed with nothing more shared between the couple than sandwiches on the beach and late night card games with friends. It wasn’t until one afternoon at Eric’s house, over a decade after that fateful April Fools’ Day, that their platonic relationship changed. Eric, his roommates, and Melissa were having a great time together, and at one point, Melissa looked over at Eric and suddenly realized how important he was to her—and how much she loved him. “I suddenly saw Eric from a different perspective, and it was the moment I fell in love,” she says. Soon after, both Melissa and Eric traveled to Washington DC with a mutual friend. The sudden distance from their hometown was all they needed to know that the blossoming relationship between them was real. They returned to Connecticut a couple and have been together ever since. Eric—probably because of nerves about his secret plan—wasn’t being his most helpful, especially when he suggested that they take a ride along the coast. However, his persistence eventually wore the reluctant Melissa down, and soon the pair found themselves on the beach where they used to spend their sunny Saturday afternoons together, snacks in hand. There, Eric escorted Melissa to a bench on the bluff and got down on one knee. “He said simply, ‘There is only one important question left in my life,’” says Melissa.

Melissa and Eric have the benefit of a long shared history, having grown up together, and they took advantage of it for some smaller elements of their wedding. For table markers, Melissa’s aunt created signs from quarter boards with the names of local spots from the couple’s hometown. As a surprise for Eric, Melissa attempted to fulfill one of his life-long dreams—riding on a motorcycle along a beach road—in cake form, at least. This whimsical groom’s cake was an extra personal touch that both the groom and guests found amusing.

alison + richard

When envisioning their perfect wedding celebration, Alison & Richard pictured a relaxed event that spanned a weekend rather than a traditional ceremony. the proposal. The couple was flying home from Alison’s cousin’s wedding when they came to a mutual decision—they wanted to get married. “We had a conversation about what we wanted with our futures and how we saw the other in it,” says Alison. Since neither could imagine spending life without the other, marriage seemed like the perfect next step. The very next day, the couple went shopping for an engagement ring together. While still in the jewelry store parking lot, Richard couldn’t help but add a hint of romance to the proceedings. Turning to Alison with the same bold attitude he’d had on that first Super Bowl Sunday, he said, “I know this is a bit late, but Alison Mary Woolford, will you marry me?” In the end, the proposal was more than simply romantic—it was the stuff of true love. the wedding weekend. The weekend kicked off with the couple’s beachside rehearsal dinner in Sandwich, Massachusetts. Alison and Richard invited all of their guests to partake in the evening’s festivities, so that everyone had the opportunity to get acquainted before the actual wedding day. The next morning, Alison and her father took a beautiful carriage ride from Belfry Inne to the wedding venue, Heritage Museums and Gardens. For Alison, the carriage ride was more than just a fabulous entrance; it was symbolic of her love for horseback riding and easily made the list of her favorite memories of the day.

After meeting at a mutual friend’s party and instantly hitting it off, the two couldn’t stop gushing about one another. “Both of us talked nonstop to our friends about the other, and one day Richard finally made a brave move and ‘friended’ me on Facebook,” says Alison. After spending weeks getting to know each other and bonding, the couple found themselves together for Super Bowl Sunday. As they watched the big game, Richard decided it was time to make a move. Turning to Alison, he said, “I really want to kiss you.” The couple has been together ever since.

the day & design. In order to create an ambiance that not only reflected their personalities but also created a relaxed, comfortable atmosphere for their guests, Alison and Richard worked to incorporate details that were meaningful to them. A string quartet announced Alison’s entrance with their version of “Just Like Heaven.” At the reception, a live big band played exclusively to highlight Richard’s love of music from that era. Rather than send their guests home with a favor, the couple made donations to Doctors Without Borders and PALS Charities. Richard’s mother is the owner of The Blossom Shoppe, and she worked with the couple to bring their vision of bright, gorgeous, statement-making flowers to life, creating non-traditional floral arrangements in bold shades of orange, mango, and lime green. The resulting look was vivid, personal, and unique.

Andi Salas and Mark Rose met in typical New York City fashion—at a bar. It was a busy weekend night when they both found themselves trying to get the bartender’s attention. Before long, they were bonding over the difficulty of ordering a drink in a crowded club. As they got to talking, Andi was wooed by Mark’s southern charm and Mark was captivated by Andi’s sense of humor. Mark’s ridiculous dancing later that night sealed the deal for Andi. It wasn’t a story of great pomp and circumstance, but something better—the beginnings of real, true love. As their relationship progressed, the couple discovered they were even better suited than they could have ever imagined. “Being together brought out the best in both of us,” says Andi. When Andi and Mark began to spend time with each other’s friends and families, they were surprised by how comfortable and easy the interactions were. After only a few months of dating, Mark decided it was time to share another important part of his life with Andi—his love for Nantucket. Mark quickly changed his mind, though, when he realized that this turn of events gave him the perfect opportunity to ask Andi’s father for permission to marry his daughter. Mark joined Andi’s father on an early morning fishing trip and acquired the blessing he was hoping for. That evening, Mark insisted that he and Andi take a sunset walk on Dionis Beach, and after a little surfcasting to settle his nerves, he dropped to one knee in the sand and asked Andi to be his wife.

The two spent the rest of the weekend together, and both were sad to see it come to an end. Mark began to visit Jill several weekends a month, both falling more in love with each visit. For their outdoor reception at the inn, the backdrop of clear skies and crashing waves provided the newlyweds with the best setting they could have asked for. But neither could have predicted the most memorable moment of the day. After their vows, the couple ventured down to the harbor for some photos by the water when Mark suddenly nudged Jill and motioned to a boat. Cupid may be notorious among the lovelorn for his bad aim, but for Jen Reilly and Matthew Heinlein—who met on the website OKCupid.com—his bow and arrow proved successful. “We enjoyed long, hilarious conversations via text and were amazed at how much we had in common and how comfortable we felt with each other,” Jen says. “We fell in love quickly and have been together ever since.” One day, Jen mentioned to Matt that she wanted something to listen to while she was knitting, as she couldn’t watch television. Soon after, a light bulb went off in Matt's head. On a late Friday night in May, he returned home from work and surprised Jen with an audio book he’d picked up at a local thrift store. Jen was delighted he remembered her request. Matt frequently bought items from thrift stores, so Jen, relaxing at home in her pajamas, didn’t have the slightest clue that this audio book didn’t have any read-aloud material inside it, only an engagement ring. He prompted her to open it and she did, not thinking it was anything special. A moment later, Jen froze as she discovered the gleaming ring within. Jen was overjoyed as Matt smiled lovingly at her and asked her to be his wife. She spoke the only word that could come to her mouth: “Yes!”

recently relocated to the Cape. “Matt and I both agreed that we wanted a lowstress, homey wedding that let our guests—and us—relax and enjoy the day,” Jen says. “So we decided to stay close to home at a beautiful outdoor location.” Their wedding guests would be able to witness the pair’s heartfelt matrimony at Coonamessett Farm, with the vibrant beauty of a Cape Cod autumn as the backdrop.

took a hands-on approach to creating her dream wedding. She hand-knit her silk-beaded shawl, and also made the invitations, table runners, napkin holders, menus, and favors—beautiful crocheted flower pins and some creamy hot chocolate mix. She chose a color palette of brown, yellow, and deep shades of rich wine to create the ideal autumn atmosphere. Jen, her mother, her sister, and her friend Celeste arranged the flowers for the tables, and Celeste knitted shrugs for the bridesmaids. Jen had a great team working with her, allowing her to focus primarily on her diy projects. “Since I could just let them do their thing, I was free to put together all my diy stuff without worrying about anything else. It was such a worry-free day; I wish it could be like that for every couple getting married,” she says. The many homespun elements not only added a sense of the couple’s personalities, but also exhibited Jen’s talent and love of all things crafty.
