There is an untamed beauty to the seashore as summer turns to autumn — the air becomes brisk and cool, and the sun glints quietly off copper and red leaves. Like the tides, the crowds dispel, revealing expanses of sand and ocean as far as the naked eye can see. For many visitors to the Cape and the islands of Nantucket and Martha’s Vineyard, the off season holds even greater opportunity to become intimate with the region’s dune-swept beaches, quaint towns, and earthy elements. Like the season of fall itself, this very special place is forever changing but also eternally the same, poised to capture your heart for the first time or the five hundredth. Let yourself be romanced.

There’s something inherently romantic about fall and winter – they’re seasons when things slow down a bit, when you might feel like the only bride in the world instead of another in a long line of summer wedding weekends. So soak in the season. Light a fire. Eat something that’s been cooking since morning. Flaunt your favorite color like an autumn forest. T

heir love story has taken Nicole Harburger and

Nicholas Stafford around the world, but Cape Cod was the magical place where they decided to exchange their marriage vows. They might have chosen Vermont, where Nicole and Nick met at a pre-wedding soccer game in the summer of 2005 and fell for one another instantly. Or Upwaltham, in southern England, where they had their second date, at Nick’s sister’s wedding. They could have picked Cabris, the hillside village in France where Nick paused on a winding road to tell Nicole he’d loved her since the day they’d met and asked her to be his wife. Or possibly Tampa, Florida, where Nick had managed to secure a Stateside transfer that allowed him to finally be in the same time zone with Nicole. They could have gone for London, or Paris, or Reykjavik, or the Caribbean nation of Belize, or any of the many other places their four-year, international romance had taken them. But in the Speci end, they chose Cape Cod. al

Touc In s t e a d h: o t h e i r t a f nu m b e r i n g bl e th e m fo s , th e y nam e d r pl traveled a ces th ey’ d to g eth e r .

Nicole had summered there as a child, soaking up the sun and eating beachside burgers. Nick had driven there, glowing with excitement, to ask Nicole’s mother for her daughter’s hand in marriage. They’d spent cold winter nights there, dreaming over dinner of having their own home on the Cape someday. And now that they were getting married, they wanted the Cape to be the place where they promised to love each other forever and became husband and wife.

Nicole, from Boston, and Nick, from England, were determined to incorporate the best of Old and New England in their ceremony, starting with a morning soccer match in honor of the game that had brought them together. The night before the wedding, guests gathered for a traditional Cape Cod clambake, with native New Englanders offering their English friends tips on how to pull lobster meat from the shells and everyone was dripping with warm butter. The reception featured Pims cocktails, the classic British libation. And instead of a traditional wedding cake, Nicole and Nick served their favorite dessert — old-fashioned American apple pie — and invited their guests to roll up their sleeves and dig in. Gift bags were stuffed with treats from the Old and New Worlds, including

w

55

56 { w e llw e d.com }

Curly Wurlys, Cape Cod Potato Chips, Chocolate Lobster Pops, and other goodies. Nicole and Nick wanted their wedding celebration to be joyful, exuberant, and fun, so they started with a bold, bright red as the primary color in their palette, mixing it with a soft aqua to reflect the ocean setting, and a warm orange-pink shade.

“Nick’s grandparents traveled from England to join the festivities, and other friends and family from around the world gathered with open hearts to celebrate the occasion.” Because so much of their time together had revolved around their shared travels, Nicole and Nick wanted to share their experiences with their loved ones. Instead of numbering their tables, they named them for places they’d traveled together and used photo cubes with pictures and information about each place as part of

the centerpieces. In the same vein, they bypassed traditional place cards, opting instead for personalized red leather luggage tags tied to each chair. In lieu of a traditional guest book, Nicole’s maid of honor had a book of vintage travel postcards printed, which guests filled out and tucked into a vintage suitcase for safekeeping. Even an unexpected gusty rain couldn’t dim their pleasure. In fact, the rain and its accompanying power outage actually made the ceremony more special. Guests thought the candlelight ceremony was warm and romantic, and the trumpeter they’d hired to team up with their DJ ended up playing an impromptu solo that was memorably romantic. Just as the ceremony ended, the power came back on. Nick’s grandparents traveled from England to join the festivities, and other friends and family from around the world gathered with open hearts to celebrate the occasion. And Nicole and Nick celebrated the fact that wherever they are together — whether it’s an apartment in Adams Morgan or a sailboat in Belize — will always feel like home.

M

artha’s Vineyard, Massachusetts, is a pretty special

place for Erinn Sullivan and Nathan Davis. When they first met, on a Chappaquiddick vacation when Erinn was 9 years old and Nate was 10, neither of them realized that they were looking into their future. In fact, both of them promptly forgot the encounter, though a fortuitous photograph confirms it. But they certainly remember the next time they met, while spending the summer at Nate’s family’s house on Chappaquiddick. Nate and his two brothers were spending the summer working on the island, and Nate’s mom invited her niece Casey to bring a couple of friends and use the guest house. Casey immediately invited Erinn, who’d been one of her closest friends since their toddler days. It wasn’t long before Erinn and Nate were spending as much time as they could together, and when they left the island in late August to head back to their respective schools, it was the beginning of a longc h: Specia l Tou distance relationship that would continue through Erinn and Nate college and end with both of them settling in New ea ch had thre e York City.

rents delighted grandpa eir in attendance at th wedding.

With so much history tied to the Vineyard, it’s no wonder that Nate chose the island as the setting for his proposal. He’d swept Erinn off for a quick visit to celebrate her 26th birthday, and on a cold and rainy afternoon in early May, he casually proposed. Erinn later found out that he’d planned to pop the question during their dinner at Catch on the Charlotte, but he just couldn’t wait and ended up jumping the gun. There was no question that they’d have the wedding on Martha’s Vineyard. In fact, the very weekend Nate proposed, he and Erinn started making plans, and the wedding took place just five months later, in October. Erinn turned to her mom for help. “She was wedding planner extraordinaire through the whole process — I couldn’t have done it without her,” she says. Erinn and her mom fell in love with a warm color palette that reflected the beauty of a New England fall: lots of rich reds, vibrant greens, and deep oranges that would echo the technicolor glow of the surrounding foliage.

w

63

64 { w e llw ed.com }

Erinn knew the weather in October on the Cape could be risky, but she and Nate thought the luxury of having Edgartown all to themselves at that time of year made it worth the gamble. Erinn asked Nate’s cousin Casey, who’d invited her to spend that fateful summer at Chappaquiddick and who’d been one of her closest friends since she was 2 years old, to be her maid of honor, thrilled to finally make her dear friend an official part of her family. Erinn knew the weather in October on the Cape could be risky, but she and Nate thought the luxury of having Edgartown all to themselves at that time of year made it worth the gamble. Luck was on their side:

the wedding weekend dawned clear and sunny, with temperatures in the low- to mid-60s — perfect autumn weather. The wedding itself was everything Erinn and Nate wanted. They invited both their surviving grandfathers — one 90 years old, the other 84 — to share grace before the meal at the reception, and the delighted grandfathers took their joyful responsibility very seriously. “Having all our friends and family together under one roof was the highlight of the whole weekend,” says Erinn. “In all the wedding day chaos, it was so calming to look around at all these people from different parts of our lives — childhood friends, college friends, family — and to realize that what they have in common is us.” Just another reason Martha’s Vineyard will always feel like a special place for Erinn and Nate.

H

anna and Sacha aren’t exactly your typical couple.

Hannah Greenwald met Sacha Ross when they were students at Cornell, and though they liked each other, the timing for romance was never right and they ended up going their separate ways — Hannah to New York and Sacha to San Francisco. A group e-mail brought them together again, and things got serious fast. Just as their relationship was heating up, Sacha took off with his brother and sister on a three-month jaunt through Cambodia, Thailand, India, and South Africa. Sacha made a point of stopping at lots of internet cafés he passed to send a quick hello to Hannah. When the 2004 tsunami hit Thailand, Sacha and his family were already safely out of the storm’s path, but Hannah didn’t know that and went into panic mode when she couldn’t track him down for five agonizing hours. The experience c h: Specia l Tou was a terrible one, but it made clear how deep as Whale imagery w their feelings for each other ran. When Sacha’s ugh trip ended, he moved to New York to live with incorporated thro as Hannah. t th eir wedding,

ou of th e classic symbol Nantucket.

Hannah and Sacha’s relationship seemed to have a flair for the dramatic. On their first vacation together, to Nantucket, Hannah fractured her ankle playing tennis the first day. Sacha carried her off the court and spent the rest of the week taking care of her. The first time Sacha met Hannah’s parents was in the middle of a winter snowstorm, and Hannah and Sacha had to walk 40 blocks to get to the restaurant. Despite the drama-filled situations that seemed to come their way, though, Hannah and Sacha stayed totally relaxed and comfortable with each other and with their relationship. Everything just felt right.

Perhaps that’s why they ended up getting engaged in a way that was completely undramatic. Just home from the gym, Hannah popped into Sacha’s office, still sweaty and tired, to see what he wanted to order for dinner. When he said, “I have an important question,” Hannah figured it was about the Thai menu. But then he said,

w

72 { w e llw e d.com }

“Hannah knew Nantucket was the place for their wedding — she’d been spending time with her family there for 25 years” “Do you want to get married?” and pulled out a beautiful ring that would serve as her engagement ring until they chose the official ring together. Hannah knew Nantucket was the place for their wedding — she’d been spending time with her family there for 25 years and, since her parents have a house there, she considers it her second home. Hannah’s sister had been married there, and the wedding had been gorgeous — plus, Hannah and Sacha had a sentimental attachment to the spot where they’d taken their first real vacation as a couple.

They planned a traditional Jewish wedding to include their families’ beliefs. During the ceremony, they signed the ketubah, a traditional Jewish marriage contract between the bride and groom, wanting to share this usually private moment with all the people they loved. Hannah collaborated with designer Ellen Welden to create invitations that inspired the wedding’s color palette: gorgeous fall colors in rich shades of red, green, orange, and yellow. The ceremony itself, though, was warm and drama-free. Hannah and Sacha reveled in the pleasure of being surrounded by their loving family and friends as they celebrated their happiness. “It flies by so quickly — you’re picking out flowers, and you blink, and you’re on the dance floor with your new husband dancing your first dance,” says Hannah. “Savor every moment.”

A R T- F E LT. This page: The abundance of details makes vintage dĂŠcor feel perfectly personal. Here, wool flowers sewn with vintage beads and pearls make this simple ring pillow by LLubav a family keepsake. Green glass vases by Moser Glass spill flowers across the reception tables in a series of small arrangements. A bridal bouquet bound up with vintage ribbons by Hyman Hendler is full of traditional wedding flowers, including hellebores, gloriosa lilies, jasmine, and parrot tulips. Opposite: The same bridal blooms brighten tables at the reception and hang from handmade paper cones on the backs of chairs. Vintage lace linens are relaxed and elegant at the same time.

This page: A modern cake topper gets vintage style when it’s handcrafted of millinery flowers, paper scraps, and German glass glitter. Both by Goldbug Studio. A flea market collection of mismatched china in muted tones is both lovely and affordable. Effortlessly elegant, a hand-penned “Just Married” sign by Jane Aiken is a perfect reception accent. This 1920’s-inspired postcard invitation evokes the best of a bygone era. Vintage handkerchiefs are a sophisticated and whimsical stand-in for traditional save-the-date cards. Both by Lucky Luxe Couture Correspondence A dainty bouquet of vintage jewelry, brooches and buttons from Vintage Magpie is visually stunning and truly one-of-a-kind. Opposite: Antique lace jars swathed in vintage doilies light the way for nighttime strolls. S P E C I A L F E AT U R E
