{from the publisher} In the wedding industry, every job is so important — and so hands-on — that it requires a true love for the trade. Being “hands-on” is one thing I know about. Every item in this issue — in every issue! — has my fingerprints all over it. I’ve scoured flea markets, rummaged through garage sales, and pounded city streets searching for the perfect prop to make a photo shoot extraordinary and, more important, fire the imagination of a bride-to-be. I’ve handcrafted items for tabletops and gowns, and don’t get me started on the art of glittering! But even after countless hours choosing photos and laying out pages — I still love my job. And when my passion shows through, these pages really come to life. I hope in reading this issue, you’ll feel the same enthusiasm to make your wedding unique. Feeling overwhelmed? Translate that energy into organization and break down the flurry of details into manageable bites. What defines you as a couple? Are you both foodies? Find caterers who’ll work with you to create personalized cuisine. Wine connoisseurs? Ensure your taste in vino is a priority in the budget. Passion and planning together make a fabulous combination.

Let your past inspire you — anything is fair game! My own childhood memories of eating Creamsicles in the hot summer sun became our sorbet color palette (page 109). And who didn’t love county fairs as a kid? Our gorgeous gown shoot, Fair Weather (page 120), is sure to bring you back to your youth. In today’s economy, budgeting is essential. Wedding professionals everywhere will happily work with you to provide the best experience possible at any price point. Or, get crafty with a little DIY (see pages 85-117). Not sure where to start? This issue is filled with ideas! Go ahead: Rip out pages, make an inspiration board, show vendors what you’re excited about. With smart planning, you can put on a great show that’s totally you. Let us help you get inspired and get passionate!

The wedding affair
{mission possible} The 2010 Wedding Affairs are the perfect antidote for “expo-style” wedding show burnout — get ready to be pampered and prepared. If you’re interested in all that The Cape & Islands has to offer prospective married couples, join us at the Ocean Edge Resort in Brewster, Massachusetts, on March 6th for a wedding showcase that’s truly one-of-akind. The Cape & Islands Wedding Affair’s Marie Antoinette–themed celebration of all things nuptial is a far cry from traditional expo-style wedding fairs. Here, you’ll find fete-worthy fare served up by the area’s many excellent local caterers, exquisitely crafted cakes that taste as good as they look, a runway show of the season’s best bridal couture, exquisite table settings, and more — all concocted by The Cape & Islands’ most exceptional vendors. Last year’s event was a rousing success, with decadent candy and caramel apple bars and a sophisticated potpourri bar. Surely there could be no better way to begin the process of planning your wedding celebration than with an event inspired by the phrase “Let them eat cake!”

When Caroline Gagel spotted a package on her doorstep one day, she assumed it was a recent Amazon.com order and opened it without a second thought. Instead of the books she’d been expecting, however, Caroline discovered a leather-bound portfolio with an appraisal for an engagement ring inside. Since she had been dating her boyfriend, Chris Goodchild, for six years and knew that he’d planned a romantic dinner for that upcoming weekend, it didn’t take much effort for Caroline to put the pieces together. What did take effort was keeping her discovery to herself. She says she made it almost all the way to dessert, but when at one point Chris changed expressions in a particularly suggestive manner, Caroline could no longer contain herself and burst into hysterical laughter. She apologized, then began laughing again. “What do you know?” Chris asked. “I know everything,” Caroline admitted at last. “Well,” he said, “I guess, will you marry me?” Considering that their engagement commenced with a proposal like that, it’s no surprise that Caroline and Chris planned a fun, laid-back wedding that was anything but traditional. For Caroline, who grew up in Houston but had spent every summer since childhood at her family’s house on Martha’s Vineyard, the Cape was the only place she’d ever imagined getting married.
Caroline’s a big fan of black-and-white color combinations, as her house and wardrobe amply attest, and she wanted to bring that same aesthetic to her wedding decor.
50 { wellwed.com }
Caroline’s a big fan of black-and-white color combinations, as her house and wardrobe amply attest, and she wanted to bring that same aesthetic to her wedding. As a nod to the rolling green fields that surround the Agricultural Society Barn, she added green to her palette as well, choosing green flowers exclusively, including hydrangeas, orchids, wheatgrass, and bells of Ireland, for the flower arrangements. When it came to prints, she chose a mix, including stripes, damask, Moroccan tiles, and Marimekko prints, for a crisp, graphic look that she carried over into the bridesmaids’ black-andwhite dresses from Anthropologie, the flower girls’ black-and-white gingham frocks, and the black-and-white striped socks worn by the groom and his attendants. Chris’ brother David, a classical bassist, helped the duo put together an eclectic arrangement of wedding songs for their string quartet, including “I Love NYE” by Badly Drawn Boy for Caroline’s walk down the aisle and a violin rendition of “Stairway to Heaven” by Led Zeppelin that was a huge hit with their guests.

Caroline and Chris made it a point to infuse the wedding with plenty of personality. During the cocktail hour, they arranged for lawn games including bocce, croquet, and horseshoes to be set up outside. (Some guests had so much fun with the friendly competition that they headed back outside after dinner was done to finish their games.) Because their niece — Caroline’s sister’s daughter — was too little to walk down the aisle as a junior flower girl, her father pulled her down the aisle instead, in a wagon with a sign attached to the back that read, “Here Comes the Bride.” (“Naturally, she was the true star of the wedding,” Caroline says.) For the couple’s wedding cake, they asked their cake designer to use Chris’ family recipe for chocolate chip pound cake and served it with Mad Martha’s ice cream, a Vineyard tradition, in Oreo, Snickers, and strawberry flavors. Caroline and Chris also enlisted friends and family to bake up a storm, producing hundreds of cookies in five flavors for a cookie bar whose tempting desserts doubled as wedding favors.“Chris and I love cookies about as much as we love each other and decided our wedding wouldn’t be complete without them,” says Caroline. Like their engagement, Chris and Caroline’s wedding was full of laughter, surprises, and fun, the perfect reflection of their easygoing relationship and a happy promise for the future. “We have never had more fun than we did at our wedding,” Caroline says.

Alissa Cohen was frustrated. She’d just gotten the most romantic proposal she could imagine. During the years she had been dating Aaron Mandell, he’d communicated a number of important messages on postcards from Paris. He’d written on one to tell Alissa he loved her for the first time. He’d used a postcard to ask Alissa to move in with him. And now he’d given her another postcard telling her how much he loved her before asking her to marry him on a deserted Nantucket beach. She had never been so happy. But she wanted to tell her parents and her sister the wonderful news, and though she’d called and called, she couldn’t reach them before it was time to head to dinner. When they entered the restaurant, however, Alissa’s frustration immediately disappeared when she saw both their families grinning at them in a private dining room. Aaron had planned the whole thing. You could say Aaron has a knack for surprising Alissa. (He swept her off to Paris a few weeks after he proposed to celebrate her 30th birthday.) But the night they met, on a blind date set up by two matchmaking friends, Aaron was the one who was surprised. He had never seen a more beautiful girl, and he was amazed by how much they had in common. That first conversation never slowed down, and six years later, Alissa and Aaron are still finding things in common. One similarity is their love for Cape Cod and The Islands. Aaron grew up spending summers on Nantucket, while Alissa and her family spent summer holidays on the Cape. There was no question that a wedding celebration near the water was in order, but they weren’t sure whether to choose Nantucket or the Cape. A visit to the Willowbend Country Club in Mashpee settled the question — Aaron and Alissa both fell in love with the beautiful outdoor spaces and rustic red barn on the site.
Knowing his bride’s penchant for fireworks, Aaron plotted a terrific fireworks display to take place during the reception. 56 { wellwed.com }
Alissa took an active role in wedding planning, enlisting help to ensure that things went smoothly for the big day, but doing most of the preliminary wedding planning herself. Her efforts resulted in a ceremony full of personal touches. Alissa carried a family Bible and a picture of her beloved late uncle down the aisle along with her bouquet. Instead of a pillow, the ring bearer carried the couple’s rings tied to a bamboo fishing pole. Per Alissa's father's request, Aaron’s father acted as the ceremony’s rabbi — a doctor in his professional life, Mr. Mandell had studied to get a one-day certification to perform the couple’s marriage rite. Alissa and Aaron wrote their own vows, reading them aloud to each other during the ceremony.

At the reception, they performed a choreographed first dance to “Right Round” by Flo Rida — a surprise for their guests that they’d prepared with lessons from Extreme Dancesport in Cambridge, Massachusetts. The couple also celebrated with their guests at a cocktail party before the wedding, allowing the actual ceremony to take place after sundown on Saturday in keeping with Jewish tradition. The dual celebration also gave Alissa the opportunity to splurge on two wedding dresses: a shorter Vera Wang dress for the cocktail party and a full-length Vera Wang gown for the wedding and reception. Aaron also had one more surprise for Alissa. Knowing his bride’s penchant for fireworks, Aaron plotted a terrific fireworks display to take place during the reception. Alissa was stunned and delighted. “I got him monogrammed silver cufflinks and a monogrammed silver belt buckle from Tiffany,” Alissa says. “I guess you could say he won in that department!”

It’s no surprise that Virginia Wise and Brian Hobin decided to celebrate their wedding by the sea. After all, many of the landmark moments in their relationship occurred right on the beach. They first met on the beach, over Independence Day weekend in 2004, when Virginia joined a friend for the holiday weekend festivities on the South Shore in Marshfield. Brian was also a guest, and after a weekend of swimming, boating, and lounging on the beach together, the two found they had forged an almost instant connection. When Brian left that weekend, he had Virginia’s phone number in his pocket and the happy knowledge that his new apartment was only about five minutes away from her parents’ house in Boston, where he was working. Virginia, however, had almost finished packing for her planned end-of-summer move to New York City, where she had found a new job. So the couple spent the first two years of their relationship commuting back and forth between Boston and New York on the infamous Fung Wah Bus — the cheapest (and often most hilarious) mode of transportation between the two cities. After two years, Virginia decided to take the plunge and moved back to Boston to be closer to Brian.
When the ceremony ended, Brian and Virginia celebrated by flinging off their shoes and running down the beach.
62 { wellwed.com }
They decided to get married on the beach, too, in March 2008, when Brian planned an impromptu vacation to Fort Lauderdale to escape the long Boston winter. Brian, whose graduation was just months away, had accepted a job in San Francisco — on yet another beach — and asked Virginia to come with him. They were busy planning their move across the country, but Virginia didn’t know that Brian was planning something else, too. He carried her engagement ring around in his pocket for three days, biding his time and waiting for the perfect moment. He found it, on the beach of course, as the couple raced along the water’s edge, laughing and breathless. Brian pulled her close to him, dropped to one knee, and asked the completely stunned Virginia to marry him. “I had no idea it was coming,” Virginia says. Virginia and Brian knew they wanted to get married on the East Coast, as close as possible to the Atlantic Ocean, and as soon as they saw the waves crashing on the shore at the Popponesset Inn, they knew they’d found their spot. “It is as close as you can get to the beach without actually being on it,” Virginia says. She knew planning the wedding cross-country would be tricky, but by enlisting her mom’s enthusiastic help and choosing great vendors who made the process stress-free, Virginia was able to put together the wedding she and Brian wanted.

The wedding itself was a perfect celebration of love and fun. Virginia, a graphic artist, played with designs for wedding details, incorporating a note of whimsy with bold icons for place cards, wedding programs, and favor cards. Scattered paper lanterns lit up the beachfront ceremony. The couple took their palette inspiration from the beach itself, mixing dazzling emerald greens and rich, sunlit blues with shimmering sand and tan shades. Brian traded the traditional black tux for a warm tan suit, while Virginia opted for a classic gown whose soft white echoed the subtle glow of a sandy beach. For Virginia and her mother, seeing the results of their hard work come together in the enchanting seaside wedding was incredible — and even the weather smiled on them, with the dazzling sun breaking through after weeks of miserable weather. And, of course, as soon as the ceremony ended, Virginia and Brian celebrated by flinging off their shoes and running down the beach with their bridesmaids and groomsmen, who happily joined in the splashing seaside celebration, adding yet another special beach memory to Virginia and Brian’s history.

Will Gibbons cannot keep a secret. Julie Fellows knew what was up the minute she checked in with her boyfriend by phone. “What’s up?” she asked. “Nothing! I can’t tell you! I have to go!” a frazzled Will replied. A few days later, and none too subtly, Will insisted on taking Julie shopping for a new outfit to wear to his fraternity’s annual Sweetheart Ball. Even if she had missed Will’s earlier clues, there was no way she could miss the panic in his eyes when she leaned in to adjust the pocket of his suit pants and he leapt away from her, shouting “Don’t touch my pocket!” Julie knew exactly what was going to happen, and she couldn’t have been happier. She and Will had been a couple since their freshman year at the University of Washington, when Julie – a pre-med student – and Will – an engineering major – found themselves in many of the same first-year calculus and chemistry classes. They ended up walking home from class together most days, though it took Julie a while to warm up to Will’s nerdy backpack and backwards hat. Eventually, though, she realized that his sharp intellect and surprising ability to fix almost anything had completely charmed her, and the two started dating seriously. (Julie jokes that for Will, the discovery of a science-geek girl who was actually fairly nice to look at was the big drawing point.) Julie and Will were together all through their college years. When graduation drew near and Will started applying to chemicalengineering doctoral programs, they realized that they had to make some decisions about their future. Since they were both planning postgraduate studies, they knew there were plenty of possibilities, including staying together long-distance or just splitting up, but they also knew they made a good team and decided to stick together. When Will proposed at the Sweetheart Ball, it wasn’t a surprise, but it was a joyous moment for them both. They spent two years planning the wedding while Will attended his engineering program at the University of Colorado in Boulder and Julie worked as a phlebotomist while perfecting her medical school applications.
“We treated our wedding like we were throwing a huge party, which meant good food, music, and a warm atmosphere for our guests,” says Julie. 68 { wellwed.com }
Though they had met in Seattle and lived in Boulder, Julie and Will knew Nantucket was where they wanted to get married. Will had spent summers there learning to sail in Nantucket Harbor and listening to stories around the dinner table with his fun-loving extended family, who shared a house on the island. Will invited Julie to join him on the island the first summer they were dating – he worked in landscaping, while Julie worked at the former Eat Fire

Spring on Old South Wharf – and she fell in love with the island, too, coming back with Will every summer. “Our trip to Nantucket is something we look forward to every year,” says Julie. “We think of it as an enchanting place where friends and family come together, so it felt like the perfect place to have our wedding.” They chose fun with friends and family as the theme for the wedding. “We treated our wedding like we were throwing a huge party, which meant good food, music, and a warm atmosphere for our guests,” says Julie. She framed pictures from the weddings of her parents and grandparents and the weddings of Will’s parents and grandparents and set them out by the guest book for guests to enjoy. Will’s grandfather read a poem during the ceremony, echoing a reading he had given at the wedding of Will's parents. Julie burst into laughter when her veil snagged on a rough plank of wood as she prepared to walk down to the beach, tugging her head insistently back. Her laughter was infectious, and as a guest helped unhook her veil, everyone joined in the merriment.

Rachel Avan doesn’t like banana bread, but she didn’t confess that fact to David Chmielewski until they had been dating for a number of years. In the spirit of friendly roommate reconciliation, David baked a loaf of banana bread for Rachel the first time they met, when they became unexpected housemates and David borrowed Rachel’s room during a short renovation before she moved in. Rachel, who heard the news from the landlord the day before she was planning to move in, left a very firm message on David’s answering machine to let him know she was planning to assume possession of her room, and, eager to smooth things over with his new roommate, he baked her a welcome-home loaf of banana bread. A few days later, he invited her out to lunch, and they ended up talking until the wee hours of the morning. Rachel might not have been crazy about David’s banana bread, but it quickly became obvious that they were crazy about each other. They made their relationship work through years of being in different cities — while David attended medical school and Rachel studied law — and in the early days of their careers. Finally, they ended up together in New York. Rachel came home on the seventh night of Hanukkah exhausted after a busy evening with clients, but David insisted they stick with their plan to celebrate every night of Hanukkah that year. He lit the candles, and Rachel opened her gift — a thin rectangle that turned out to be an envelope. Curious, she opened the envelope and found a printout from a design-your-own-ring website. Puzzled, she looked at David, who had gotten down on one knee. She looked back at the paper and saw that he’d written “Will you marry me?” “I don’t think I stopped smiling for a month,” says Rachel, who was excited about the prospect of choosing her own ring. “It was the perfect moment.”
Rachel Chose a color palette of rich blues and greens inspired by the outdoors and the ocean.

Rachel is from Miami, but David had taught her to love the laidback charms of Martha’s Vineyard during their time together, and they knew the Vineyard would be the perfect place to celebrate their wedding. Choosing the exact location was easy, too, since Rachel and David had enjoyed a romantic dinner at The Beach Plum Inn a few years earlier to celebrate Rachel’s birthday and her successful completion of her first year of law school. Looking out over the gorgeous grounds and enjoying a glass of wine, Rachel and David agreed the Inn would be the perfect place to get married. It was just the right size for the intimate wedding they imagined.

Rachel had always dreamed of planning her wedding, though she’d never envisioned exactly what she wanted for the ceremony, and she dived into the planning process with gusto. She browsed fabric stores for samples to give her vendors a sense of her style and settled on a palette of rich blues and greens inspired by the outdoors and the ocean, knowing the colors were David’s favorites, too. Rachel spent a lot of time with her vendors putting together the details, and her efforts paid off: Everything about the wedding celebration came together perfectly, from the storm breaking just before the ceremony to David’s Grandpa Saul saying the Shevah Brachot with the couple under the huppa, right down to the marshmallow roast at The Beach Plum that followed the reception. As for the food, there was no banana bread in sight. Guests celebrated with a lemon chiffon cake layered with white chocolate-lemon mousse and raspberry jam that was so exquisitely crafted that guests asked Rachel if it was real. The delectable cake did have one thing in common with David’s long-ago banana bread, though: It marked the beginning of something special.

For Audra Bodenstab and Tripp Boyle, there was no question where they’d celebrate their wedding: Nantucket was the clear choice. They had met at The University of Massachusetts Amherst in the spring of Audra’s sophomore year, when Tripp was visiting his younger sister, Lizzy, who was also a student. Audra and Lizzy were friends, but she had never met Tripp until she ran into him at a party. Without realizing their shared connection, they spotted each other, introduced themselves, and shared a kiss, all in a few magical hours. “I think I can honestly say it was love at first sight,” says Audra. As their relationship grew, Audra and Tripp began spending many weekends on Nantucket, picnicking on Great Point, relaxing on the beach, and enjoying the island’s charms. They frequently traveled with friends, but one weekend in August 2006, Tripp insisted they make the weekend just the two of them. Audra, who’d invited Lizzy to come along on the trip, was a little annoyed, but she gave in with good grace when she realized Tripp wasn’t going to back down. They spent Saturday on the beach, and then Tripp suggested they take a picnic out to Great Point that night as they often did, gathering wine, cheese, and other comestibles at the Sconset Market and driving out to the Point in time to catch the sunset. However, this time was different: As Audra and Tripp watched the edges of the sky turn pink and orange, Tripp turned to Audra and asked her to marry him. “Aside from getting married, it was the happiest day of my life,” says Audra. Audra and Tripp wanted to put an elegant twist on the classic Nantucket wedding. Audra chose a palette of clean, crisp white so that the look would be more about texture than color. “I love white, but if you want to keep things to just white, you really need to step out of the box, and I think we accomplished that with the details,” Audra says. She found her vendors to be enthusiastic participants in the planning process and was thankful for the creativity they brought to the table in executing her wedding vision.

Audra had a copy of the program from her great-grandmother’s wedding ceremony and wanted to find a way to incorporate it into her own celebration. She asked her aunt to give a reading that her greatgrandmother had chosen for her own wedding as a way of honoring her past as she began her new future with Tripp. The wedding came together exactly as Audra and Tripp had envisioned — a joyous celebration of family and friends in one of

the couple’s favorite places. As Audra walked down the aisle toward her soon-to-be-husband, she was overwhelmed with a rush of sheer happiness in the knowledge that at the end of the walk, she would be marrying the love of her life. Tripp, watching her walking toward him, felt just as lucky — he grabbed Audra’s hand during the ceremony and asked his bride-to-be to take a little walk with him, a spontaneous moment that was one of their wedding day’s most memorable for both of them. Even a long and tiring post-ceremony photography session didn’t dampen their spirits: When they arrived late to their own reception, they toasted each other with champagne and quickly shared a few of their wedding appetizers before joining their guests for the wedding feast and later leading them onto the dance floor to the rhythms of their swing band. It wasn’t until months later that Audra knew the cake had been in danger of melting for a short time and that one of the buses carrying guests from the ceremony to the reception had gotten lost. For Audra and Tripp, their favorite island had just become a little more special.
