BEFORE THE RING. When Erika Penala first laid eyes on Ed Najarian, it wasn’t your typical tale of love at first sight. “We were both working at Merrill Lynch in New York City,” Erika says. “Ed had a killer reputation on Wall Street as one of the best in his field—I was so intimidated every time he walked into a meeting!” Years later, after they parted ways professionally, a mutual friend suggested they would be perfect together. Erika fondly remembered her handsome colleague’s charming smile, and agreed to give it a try. After reconnecting at a cocktail party, she took a leap of faith and asked him out to dinner. The pair spent the next few months getting to know each other over dinners in Midtown and they’ve been inseparable ever since. THE PROPOSAL. After two years of dating, the question for Erika and Ed

became not “if” but “when.” On the first true summer evening in the city, Ed urged his sweetheart to come home early from work for a romantic rooftop dinner. Of course, every tenant in the building had the same idea, and their plans for an intimate picnic overlooking the Manhattan skyline were dashed. Leisure in New York City, Megan Hickerson attended a company event honoring some of the world’s top travel professionals. At dinner she found herself seated next to Kevin Sheehan Sr., the CEO of Norwegian Cruise Line, who happened to have a son also living in the Big Apple. All evening he sang Kevin Jr.’s praises, convincing Megan to look him up upon her return. “Not long after, I met Kevin for a blind date and his dad was right—we instantly clicked,” she says. “Who would’ve thought I’d be meeting one of my in-laws before my husband!” THE PROPOSAL. Always an avid athlete, Megan signed up for the J.P. Morgan Corporate Challenge in the peak of a blazing New York City summer. She had plans to meet Kevin for lunch after the race, but she stumbled into him waiting for her on the footbridge just outside of Central Park instead. He presented his sweetheart with a bouquet of gerbera daisies—her favorite flower— and banana pudding from Magnolia’s Bakery. “I didn’t realize this was more than a ‘Congratulations on the race!’ gift until I noticed that he was wearing my favorite shirt of his, a heavy plaid button-down, on a scorching 85 degree day,” Megan says. The newlyweds welcomed guests to the groom’s family home, where a bright jewel-toned palette and hand-hewn textures came together to strike the perfect chord of rustic sophistication. Playful toy pigs affixed with kraft paper place tags guided loved ones to their seats at long wooden farm tables that spoke for themselves. “The tables were so striking we couldn’t imagine covering them up,” Megan says. “The polished wood tied everything in the tent together with a rich, warm glow.” Lavender sprigs and centerpieces blooming in shades of magenta and purple added an air of freshpicked garden style to the simplistic tablescapes. Hay bale seating encouraged guests to enjoy the early summer breeze as they celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Sheehan late into the evening.

BEFORE THE RING. As if it were written for a screenplay, Aubrey Hansen and Andrew Bradfield’s love story began by pure coincidence. While shopping at Whole Foods in Union Square, they accidentally bumped into each other over a local strawberry display. A hurried trip for groceries became a classic “meet cute” when they began chatting and Andrew asked Aubrey out for a drink. Casual cocktails led to a date later in the week, then a second, and then another. “I was intrigued by his straight forwardness,” Aubrey says. “He was so easy to read, and it was refreshing.” THE PROPOSAL. After two years of dating, Aubrey and Andrew set out across the pond for a vacation touring England and Scotland. Towards the end of the trip they drove through the countryside to a charming inn nestled in a breathtaking valley. Just beyond their lodgings they noticed a secluded waterfall, and decided to explore the site the following morning. Rising with the sun, the couple hiked to the crest of the waterfall to enjoy the awe-inspiring view, and Andrew found his perfect moment. “He’d been carrying around a customset engagement ring for the entire vacation,” Aubrey says. “I’ll never forget the moment he got down on bended knee and asked me to be his wife.” THE DAY & DESIGN. Seeking to host a beachside affair with a hint of vintage

whimsy, Aubrey and Andrew knew their friend’s summer home in Quogue would be the perfect place to say “I do.” The couple kept the design simple to allow the cozy cottage charm of the beach house to speak for itself. “Because the home was already perfectly decorated, we let the colors of the season dictate our design,” Aubrey says. “Locally grown hydrangeas in antiqued ivory and sage hues were the source of our inspiration.” Bamboo poles tied with ribbons in the day’s shades led loved ones to the celebration aglow with laid-back, seaside style. Vintage bird cages and tulle pom-poms hung overhead as guests enjoyed passed hors d’oeuvres in lieu of a traditional sit-down feast. Loved ones danced to the tunes of a live band late into the evening, as Aubrey and Andrew set off to begin their happily ever after.

couple chose a cool color palette of subdued grey, taupe, and turquoise to bring their seaside celebration to life. They incorporated pops of sunshine yellow and beach grass accents to reflect the warm, laid-back character of late summer by the shore. Following a cozy outdoor ceremony, Jessie and Mike welcomed loved ones to a tented celebration where ivory, mint green, and aqua shades continued the design’s beachy vibe with an elegant twist. was an instant connection. “I was visiting my brother, Kenny, at Northwestern University and Blayne was his roommate,” Emily says. “The minute we were introduced I was struck with this feeling of natural ease, as if we were old friends.” Over the years, the pair maintained a casual friendship until the stars aligned and they both moved to New York City. In no time at all they began dating, and the rest is history. THE PROPOSAL. While living together in Manhattan, the New York Philharmonic had become one of their favorite date night destinations. One evening, the pair dressed up in their finest for a night of wonderful music– little did Emily know that Blayne planned to make this particular evening unforgettable. The couple arrived at Lincoln Center a little early to grab a cocktail before the show. As they enjoyed sweet sips on the balcony overlooking the sparkling skyline, Blayne popped the question with an antique diamond ring. All Emily could say was “Yes!” feeling as if the city lights shone only for her. THE DAY & DESIGN. From start to finish, every element of Emily and Blayne’s

celebration reflected their laid-back, whimsical style. “We wanted our special day to feel like a garden party full of warmth and welcome,” Emily says. “Pairing homemade touches with vintage accents resulted in the perfect effect of rustic romance.” Opting out of a traditional color scheme, the couple used a variety of muted pastels, playful pinks, and hand-hewn textures to tie together the details of their design. Taupe table runners lined long wooden tables where farm stand veggies-turned-centerpieces spilled from mismatched boxes and vases. From the garland of 1,000 paper cranes, hand-folded by the maid of honor, to custom tree branch candle holders crafted by the bride’s grandparents, every aspect of the decor was truly made with love.
