Devotion, whether it be to country or sweetheart, is rooted in pure, unwavering love, and is ever—present in today's wedding industry. There is just something about the fall and winter that exudes a feeling of togetherness. Maybe it’s the holidays, maybe it’s the desire for warmth, but during this time, I just crave connection with those I love. It is during this time that my heart aches the most for all the brave men and women in our armed forces who are away from those that mean everything to them. Here at WellWed, we are often lucky enough to witness not only fabulous nuptials but also true love — an illuminating, amazing, remarkable type of love that is impossible to miss in photos from a couple’s wedding day. For some couples, even when their lives have been disrupted by war and they live thousands of miles apart, or for those who have lost a loved one, this kind of love never fades. True love endures; it perseveres and carries on. My own grandfather, Clifford Austin, is a World War II veteran, and the inspiration for our vintage-chic “Always Faithful” gown shoot at Patriots Point in South Carolina (page 97). As a young man, he left his family to join the armed forces, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was held as a prisoner of war for many months. Our collection of stunning bridal couture is dedicated to his legacy, as well as the many men and women currently serving in the military, and others that have tragically lost their lives. It is my hope that this season, brides will remember what weddings are all about. Get back to basics by using vintage and antique elements throughout your celebration. We’ve included amazing DIY décor that can add a truly personal element to any celebration, and our pick-your-palette ideas (page 123) are sure to result in fun and fresh inspiration. Far from ever looking dated, photos from your vintage-inspired wedding will retain a timeless elegance that will be as everlasting as your devotion to one another. More important, remember what your wedding day is all about: a celebration of love. Spend a few moments this fall and winter just taking in the vibrant foliage, letting soft snowflakes kiss your cheeks, and keeping those you love close to your heart, no matter how far away they might be.

Abby Sweitzer and Justin Bales laugh when they think back on how they met. Both had gone to the Lower East Side of Manhattan to see one of their favorite bands, The Veltz Family. “We joked that neither one of us was actually cool enough to be in that part of town on a Friday night,” says Abby. Justin was intrigued by Abby and immediately asked her out to dinner and a movie the following weekend. Before they knew it, they were a couple. Abby introduced Justin to life in the big city, while he introduced her to the beaches of Long Island and the quiet, sprawling farms of the North Fork. Somewhere in between, they fell in love. Abby and Justin were together for two years before Justin was deployed to Iraq for his second tour with the United States Marine Corps. The year apart was tough, but they made it through, with the help of frequent letters, packages, and one great satellite phone. Finally, Justin returned home, and he and Abby were more sure than ever that they were meant to be together. A year after his return, Abby began planning a surprise 30th birthday party for Justin. However, unbeknownst to her, he had found out about the party — and was planning a surprise of his own. The couple went for a leisurely walk in Central Park that afternoon, admiring the blooming cherry trees on Cherry Hill. Justin was looking forward to sharing a quiet moment with Abby, but that seemed impossible: The Pope happened to be in town that weekend, and the park was packed. Steering her over Cherry Hill, he got down on one knee and proposed, drawing a round of applause from a crowd of onlookers. Abby accepted, and the celebration that evening was transformed into a combination birthday and engagement party, which had been Justin’s plan all along.

Both Abby and Justin knew there was nowhere in the world for them to be married but the North Fork. Abby’s grandparents had moved to Greenport 15 years before, and St. Agnes, where they were married, is where her grandfather last celebrated Mass, and where her grandmother still attends. Justin was born in Southampton and grew up in Mattituck, where his parents still live, so the region was an easy choice for them. A longtime family friend and former babysitter for Abby’s family had been ordained as a deacon a few months before the wedding, and the couple enlisted him to perform the ceremony. Abby’s aunt made eight gorgeous wreaths that the couple used to decorate the pews of the church and the Barn at Martha Clara Vineyards, their reception site.

It poured all day, and nearly everyone got soaked — but the rain did little to dampen spirits. Guests were welcomed to a homey, country-themed reception at the Barn at Martha Clara Vineyards. Abby and Justin had purchased 200 feet of outdoor string lights, which were a big hit and made the celebration feel that much more festive. Along the walls of the Barn, the couple strung pictures of themselves as children, as well as photos of each of their parents and grandparents on their wedding days. “It added a very personal touch,” says Abby. Throughout their engagement, Abby and Justin had collected lanterns for the tables at the reception and chose simple Mason jars for vases in keeping with the elegant country theme of the party. Charming and delicious cupcakes were provided by a friend, and in lieu of favors, donations were made to The Fisher House Foundation and the Sweitzer Family Fund to Benefit Multiple Sclerosis. At the end of the night, Abby and Justin couldn’t have been happier with their wedding day. Running around in the rain could hardly take away from their union of true love.

For Kelly Feinstein and Chris Vallina, falling in love was easy. They had so much in common that spending time together was effortless. After initially meeting at a work function in New York City, the couple quickly became inseparable — spending weekends together at farmer’s markets in Union Square, exploring the eateries and pubs of the West Village, enjoying lazy weekend brunches, taking winetasting trips to the East End of Long Island, and sharing family dinners at Kelly's parent's house. It was during these simple moments and uncomplicated outings that they fell in love. Two and a half short years later, they were visiting Chris’ family in Spain and enjoying the perfect day together: After a trip to the beach, they had drinks overlooking the seaport, followed by a candlelit dinner on the bay. While at dinner, Kelly couldn’t help but remark how perfect the day had been — but it wasn’t over yet. After their meal, the couple enjoyed a drink on a hotel terrace in Chris’ neighborhood. Placing a ring on her finger, Chris told Kelly there was only one way the day could get even better — if she agreed to become his wife. Under the Spanish moonlight, Kelly accepted.
PUMPKIN CANDLES OF VARIOUS SIZES WERE PLACED ALONG THE PERIMETER OF THE HOUSE, ILLUMINATING THE INN AS GUESTS ARRIVED.

Both Kelly and Chris knew that they wanted to have an autumn wedding. They had started dating in the fall, and for both of them it was their favorite season. They also knew they would not be traveling far — both love the North Fork and felt there was no better place for a harvest-themed wedding. They settled on the Jamesport Meeting House for the ceremony, a simple clapboard building that had the elegance and homey feeling they were looking for, and the Jedediah Hawkins Inn for the reception, a charming and comfortable Victorian inn formerly owned by a sea captain. Kelly and Chris, wanting to make the inn feel like a "home away from home" for their guests, arranged hydrangeas cut from Kelly’s family garden in galvanized buckets on the front porch. Wooden fruit crates saved from her grandfather’s childhood were also set up on the porch, filled with caramel-covered apples. Guests were also welcome to help themselves to a bottle of local wine, wrapped in parchment paper by family and friends and personalized with a “thank you” label tied around the bottle’s neck. At the ceremony, Kelly glowed in a vintage-inspired champagnecolored dress, a modern gown she had customized with details from her own mother’s wedding dress. Kelly’s friend read an excerpt from The Velveteen Rabbit, the same passage Kelly had read to her when

From the ceremony, the bride and groom traveled to the celebration in Chris’ lovingly restored 1967 golden Porsche. “I knew from the first ride I ever took in it that it would someday be a prop for our autumn wedding,” says Kelly. The reception was elegant and cozy, and everyone immediately felt at home. Pumpkin candles of various sizes were placed along the perimeter of the house, illuminating the inn as guests arrived. Inside, fireplaces in each room roared away, and amber votive candles glowed softly on the mantel next to white pumpkins. Guests relaxed to funky bass, bongo, and hammered dulcimer music in the dining room and danced to the DJ’s upbeat tunes on the enclosed porch. Everyone enjoyed local fare, including sliders, lamb chops, macaroni and cheese, and turkey, as well as marshmallows for guests to roast themselves over an outdoor fire pit. Kelly and Chris couldn’t have been happier with the celebration. After all was said and done, they had accomplished their ultimate goal of the celebration: celebrate their union with their closest loved ones. “It was just that, a celebration of our life, our family, and our friends all at one beautiful home,” says Kelly. Simple, sweet, and intimate, the day was a lot like love.

It didn’t take long for Jackie Kane and Alberto Barzola to fall in love. The couple met through an online dating site and knew right away there was a connection. They dated for months, and their outings were always sweet and romantic, no matter how simple. While preparing for a trip to Italy, Jackie was disappointed to realize that she simply didn’t have time to meet Alberto for a date before she left. However, when she left the office to meet him for a quick lunch, she found that he had a surprise for her. Alberto had set up a picnic lunch for the two of them, complete with a tablecloth, flowers, candles, and a picnic basket of delicious food — all in the backseat of his car! (Since it was late fall, it would have been too cold to eat outside.) “He always had creative ways to get me to spend time with him. I think that’s when he won me over,” says Jackie. Alberto even went so far as to tell her he was bringing her out to the best Chinese restaurant he’d ever been to — which she figured must be in Manhattan — before whisking her off on a San Francisco getaway. “I fell in love with Jackie after only a few dates,” says Alberto. “Her fantastic voice, her caring personality, and her independence are some of the virtues that drew me to her.” When the couple began planning a trip to France together, Jackie had a feeling Alberto was going to propose. Much to her surprise, however, the proposal came a few days before they left. As they sat together on the shore of the Hudson, Alberto read her a love poem he had written, then took out a gorgeous ring he had designed for her and asked her to be his wife. It turned out that Alberto had wanted to propose in France but had been warned that airport security might take the ring out of his carry-on bag. “I really didn’t want to have to propose in the airport,” he says. Jackie accepted, overjoyed with the intimate proposal, and their time in France was spent celebrating their engagement.
jACKIE AND ALBERTO WERE SURPRISED WHEN THE EIGHTPIECE BAND VENTURED FROM THE STAGE TO SURROUND THEM AS THEY DANCED.
Originally, the couple toyed with the idea of being married in Sonoma, California, where they had vacationed together, but they ultimately decided that the North Fork would provide them with the vineyard wedding they were looking for without being too far from home. Additionally, it gave them many excuses to escape the city and go on trips together, never turning down a chance to visit the beautiful Hamptons region. At their ceremony, Alberto surprised his bride at the altar by reading his own vows and giving her a laminated card with his

The dance floor at the reception was packed as guests boogied to an outstanding Latin dance band. Jackie and Alberto were especially surprised when the eight-piece band ventured from the stage to surround them as they danced. “It was one of the highlights of the night,” says Jackie. “Totally fantastic!” As the night came to an end, and Jackie and Alberto shared a quiet dance together, they knew this was only the beginning.

Guests helped themselves to station-style dining and especially enjoyed the Peruvian station, which the couple had made sure to include as a tribute to Alberto’s heritage as well as his Park Slope Peruvian restaurant, the Aji Bar Lounge. The couple also set up photos of Jackie’s late mother, surrounding them with beautiful flickering candles to honor her presence even though she couldn't be there. To celebrate Jackie’s mother’s Florida roots, the couple served key lime martinis as the celebration’s signature drink, and key lime cookies, made by a friend. Between the delicious fare and wonderful company, family and friends had a fantastic time.

As early as their second date, Karen Gargiulo and Rogelio Martinez knew they were meant to be together. They were at Coney Island, riding the Cyclone roller coaster in the hazy summer heat, still getting to know each other but sensing there was something there. “Before we knew it, feelings that this person could be my soulmate began to overcome both of us — probably much sooner then either of us thought possible,” says Karen. Their compatibility was uncanny, especially considering that, on paper, they were total opposites. As a playwright, Rogelio enjoyed spending his days writing, seeing plays, and drinking coffee, whereas Karen loved spending time outdoors, snowboarding, and camping. Their differences worked in their favor, however. Rogelio brought Karen to see his favorite plays, and Karen took Rogelio camping. Every day they discovered something new to love about each other. Eight months after they first met, the couple enjoyed a crisp April day at Cordwood Beach in Long Island. “It was there that I first saw a special side of her: playful, gentle, full of all the joy that is this life,” says Rogelio of his bride. In the midst of the crashing waves and chilly sea breeze, Rogelio got down on one knee and asked Karen to marry him. “I don’t remember the first time she said yes, but she definitely said it several times — Yes. Yes. Yes.” It wasn’t until a moment later that they noticed an older woman sitting in a car on the shore line. She had come to admire the waves and witnessed Rogelio’s proposal. Walking up to the newly engaged couple, the woman congratulated them and took their picture. “She’d been there to look at the sea; instead, she’d seen the start of a new life,” he says.
“I DON’T REMEMBER THE FIRST TIME SHE SAID YES, BUT SHE DEFINITELY SAID IT SEVERAL TIMES — YES. YES. YES.”

Karen has always been fond of the Hamptons region. She had visited often as a child and even worked on an organic farm in Amagansett for a summer. Though Rogelio was less familiar with the area, it wasn’t long before he fell in love with it as well. “He quickly grew to love the East End, the peaceful feeling that overcomes you when surrounded by all that natural beauty,” says Karen. They knew there was no better place for them to be married, and settled on Halloween for their wedding day. The bride and groom’s vision for their wedding involved a lot of unique flowers and plants. “I love plants and envisioned transforming the space with flowers, creating a feeling of being in a conservatory,” she says. They chose to have an elegant tent wedding with natural elements. The décor included a variety of mosses, maidenhair ferns,

In keeping with the elegance of the evening, guests were served a meal of amazing French cuisine, and the newlyweds enjoyed a delicious cake personally made by a few good friends. Before Karen and Rogelio knew it, the night had flown by. As the band played their final song, the couple sat at their table for the first time that night, big smiles on their faces. “We watched the guests slowly filter back inside to the music room for a final hour of cordials and cigars,” says Karen. “And there we sat, blissfully married.”

and flowers. Karen wrapped her bouquet with her grandmother’s rosary beads to remember her as she walked down the aisle. Later, her Uncle Larry sang Frank Sinatra’s “My Way” in memory of her great-uncle, who had passed away a few weeks before. As the bride and groom made their way out of the church, they were showered with lavender by their guests, Karen’s favorite herb. Because their wedding was on Halloween, children could be seen trick-or-treating outside. “I stepped outside and a little boy in a Superman costume asked if I was in costume too,” says Karen.

In the funny way that things sometimes happen, Lauren Pufahl and Devin Kinney couldn’t help but keep bumping into each other — first at a barbeque, then at a party, and finally while skiing the slopes in Stowe, Vermont. Unbeknownst to either, they had both joined the same ski house. It was there that they finally connected. “The first weekend we spent at Stowe, the two of us shared a snowy Sunday on the mountain while all of our friends lounged around the house,” says Lauren. After enjoying one another’s company for the entire weekend, it was more than apparent to both of them that they had stumbled into something extraordinary. By that spring, they were a couple. Several years later, Lauren and Devin took a few days off from work, looking forward to a long weekend together on Shelter Island. The couple caught a Hamptons-bound early-evening ferry from Boston, eager for their mini getaway. “Once underway, we watched the most stunning sunset and talked about how excited we were to have a few days to relax,” says Lauren. As the sun continued to sink over the horizon, Lauren and Devin sipped glasses of wine and chatted excitedly. In the midst of their conversation, Devin pulled Lauren a little closer and suddenly took a ring from his pocket. “I was shocked, stunned, and thrilled all at the same time. Without hesitation, I said ‘yes!’ as he slid the ring onto my finger,” she says. Lauren had grown up spending summers on Shelter Island and introduced Devin to the area soon after they began dating. He immediately fell in love with it as well, never failing to appreciate the island’s laid-back feel and natural beauty. Lauren’s parents own a house there, and the couple knew there was no better place for them to be married than right at home.

Lauren and Devin’s ceremony proved to be their favorite part of the day. Lauren had pinned a diamond brooch originally belonging to her great-grandmother to her bouquet, something her grandmother, mother, and aunts had also done on their wedding days. “It was so special to me to have a true heirloom on the most important day of my life,” says Lauren. The ceremony was held on the lawn of her parent’s home, and the spectacular weather, beautiful setting, and wonderful readings by their friends and families resulted in something truly perfect. “Our ceremony was intimate and personal — something that we didn’t necessarily expect with over 200 guests,” says Lauren.

Lauren’s late aunt had been a well-known horticulturist in the area, with a fondness for coleus. As a tribute to her, the bride and groom incorporated lots of coleus in their floral design. They also took advantage of different island elements by collecting moss, driftwood, and seashells in the months leading up to their wedding and using them to outfit the place card table. As many of the guests drifted home, exhausted from an evening of spirited dancing, Lauren, Devin, and some close friends and family adjourned to the beach for a bonfire. Basking in the glow from the fire and surrounded by their loved ones, Lauren and Devin knew the day would be something they would never forget.

Lauren and Devin’s reception had a fantastic start — the bridal party was introduced to the Black Eyed Peas’ “I Gotta Feeling,” and guests couldn’t help but notice a joyful energy throughout the room. Growing up, Lauren was often lulled to sleep by her father singing “Daddy’s Little Girl,” so choosing a song for their father-daughter dance was an easy choice. After asking everyone to surround them on the dance floor, a longtime friend of her father’s led the guests in an acapella version of the song as Lauren and her father danced.

When Doug Gellenbeck first laid eyes on Michael Whitton, he knew they were meant to be together. “I thought he looked like someone I would like to come home to every night,” he explains simply. The two had met while Doug, an interior designer, was working on a project for an Yves Saint Laurent prototype store in Las Vegas. Doug’s boss was familiar with Jonathan Adler, a prominent designer whom Michael was working with at the time. The two began to e-mail and call each other, as well as exchange short, flirty notes. One morning, Doug scheduled a business lunch with Michael to discuss supposed project ideas. However, the real reason for the meeting had nothing to do with business. Doug simply had a feeling about Michael, a feeling that they were just right for each other. Doug was correct — the two began to spend a lot of time together, just enjoying one another’s company. Traveling to San Francisco for a friend’s wedding in July 2008, Michael was on the verge of proposing before deciding he didn’t want to steal his friend’s thunder by getting engaged so close to her wedding. It wasn’t until months later that he woke up on Christmas morning with one thought: Today is the day. The couple was celebrating the holidays in their newly purchased loft, taking pictures with a self-timed camera in front of the tree. “After the first shot I said, ‘Let’s do one more,’” says Michael. “During the countdown, I got on one knee and asked him — so we got it on film!” As the camera flashed, Doug said yes, and the moment was captured forever.
“I THOUGHT HE LOOKED LIKE SOMEONE I WOULD LIKE TO COME HOME TO EVERY NIGHT,” DOUG EXPLAINS SIMPLY.
Michael and Doug wanted to make their wedding unique and incorporate as many personal elements as possible. They began by deciding to have the ceremony at a friend’s horse rescue and honey farm — a working farm that was the ideal place for their celebration. Doug was raised Catholic, but Michael, of Jewish ancestry, had always loved the traditions at Jewish wedding ceremonies, so they decided that getting married in an open field under a huppa would be fun. Drawing inspiration from a trip they had taken together to Morocco, the couple chose two main colors for the wedding: coral pink and bright turquoise. Using those two hues, plus complementary colors and marigold yellow accents, they created a vibrant palette for their September wedding day. Doug had recently read a book on the design techniques of artist Tony Duquette, who manipulates everyday objects into extraordinary sculptures, and both embraced the concept when it came to deciding

Dinner took place in a chic, yet rustic barn and included a global menu that had been personally customized by the couple. The celebration was intimate and cozy, with only the couple's closest friends and family members present. Michael and Doug later surprised everyone with a dazzling fire-dancing show. Channeling their famous engagement photo, they set up a “love photobooth” for guests to capture special moments of their own, resulting in some of the couple's favorite photos from the evening. But as anyone who has ever planned a wedding knows, no matter how smoothly everything goes, the unexpected is bound to happen, and it’s best to have a sense of humor when it does. For Michael and Doug, it was the fate of their cake. “The cake fell apart,” says Michael. “It was like that song ‘MacArthur Park.’ Luckily, it turned out to be the funky Donna Summer disco version!” Of course, when you’re marrying the love of your life, it’s easy to allow such little details to fall by the wayside.

KIMBERLY PILSON GIVES AN OUT-OF-TOWN COUPLE AND THEIR FAMILIES THE HAMPTONS DESTINATION WEDDING THEY’VE ALWAYS IMAGINED.
When it comes to weddings, kimberly Pilson knows there is no detail too small.
Unlike a lot of couples that get married in the Hamptons, Genevieve and Christopher had no ties to the region. The two were simply in love with the area and looking to have the ultimate destination-wedding experience. This can be challenging, but as soon as the couple enlisted Kimberly Pilson of The Wedding Sitter, they knew they had nothing to worry about. Hav i n g spent ma ny su m mer s i n t he Hamptons as a child, Kimberly worked in New York City for 10 years at Calvin Klein and Polo Ralph Lauren before she decided to combine her corporate event knowledge with what she had learned while planning her own

make sure to sit down & eat your wedding meal as a couple. often couples think they need to make the rounds to every table to speak with guests & before they know it , it is the last dance & they never had a bite of food. save speeches for the rehearsal dinner , & only plan for a maximum of two toasts at the reception. it ’s always better to keep the party going without a lot of interruptions.

“With the majority of the guests coming from out of town, Kimberly worked not only as a wedding coordinator but also as an impromptu Hamptons representative.” wedding, to create The Wedding Sitter. Specializing in day-of-wedding coordination, it's a great option for couples interested in doing most of the planning in the months leading up to the big day, but would like someone to handle the last minute, logistical details and wedding day duties. Kimberly plays her largest role on the wedding day itself, allowing the bride and groom to relax while she tends to the last-minute details and oversees the entire event. Her responsibilities are diverse, ranging from making sure the photographer arrives on time, to ensuring
that both the tent and lighting are set up properly, to cuing the best man for a toast, and distributing final payments to vendors. Genevieve and Christopher are very close to their families and wanted them to get a real sense of the region. Kimberly saw no better way to do this than to expose them to some of the fantastic local talent. Using Kimberly's recommendations, the couple enlisted Timothy K Lee Photography, Matt Murphy Event Lighting, and Beth of Amagansett Flowers—people she had worked with on many weddings. With the majority of the guests coming from out of town, Kimberly worked not only as a wedding coordinator but also as an impromptu Hamptons representative, who oversaw every detail, down to getting the groom to the church 0n time. The limo carrying the groomsmen got lost on its way to the ceremony. “Luckily, the best man had my cell phone number,” says Kimberly. “Otherwise, it might have taken a lot longer.” Such instances are typical for Kimberly, who makes it a point to always be prepared by carrying a Bridal Emergency Kit containing items such as Band-Aids, a sewing kit, static guard, and snacks. Thankfully, the groom arrived in plenty of time. After the ceremony, the couple danced the night away at a beautiful reception at The East Point. Taking advantage of the antique sailboat with a mast that reached the ceiling, Genevieve and Christopher projected old photos of family and friends onto the canvas sail, a personal touch that celebrated not only the location but also their strong family ties. As an unofficial representative of the region, Kimberly was content that she had done the Hamptons justice. left to right: The newlyweds take a romantic spin around the dance floor as friends and family look on; A cozy and intimate lounge area invites guests to relax.
