EDITOR’S NOTE with our sister publication, vermont vows, coming up on its 10th anniversary, it’s been a joy to reflect on nearly a decade of inspiration and oh-so-many touching love stories. every year, i’m amazed afresh at the incredible professionals who have added their glow to our pages. lifelong friendships are forged as new businesses flourish, and we raise our glasses as time-honored pros come into deserved retirement—in many ways it’s like a fruitful marriage!
one of the editorial concepts that has long-served as a pillar of inspiration to our readers has been our original color stories. we have always turned to the transfixing power of vivid hues (like pantone’s 2014 color of the year: radiant orchid), rich textures, and strikingly bold contrasts to complement the inherent beauty of diy elements, local artisanal accoutrements, and stunning bridal fashions. we are honored to be able to help you make some of our favorite wedding looks into your very own.
embrace the great outdoors in a new way with our “happy glampers” story page [61]. on our (scout’s) honor, we promise you’ll find summer camp nostalgia for days spent exploring the white mountains and the great north woods. primary colors pair with classic plaids for a look that would be right at home on walden pond. “slately radiant” page [77] strikes a quirkier chord, featuring purple-hued tables laden with cut glass and blooming orchids. quarry-mined tiles take a turn for the beautiful thanks to industrial sensibilities and parlor party style. if a fete amongst the flowers is on your mind, opt for a “petal perfect” palette page [109]. blooms of peach and blush help concoct a gathering nestled in a secret-garden greenhouse. finally, dive into the mindset of summer with “surf & turf” page [93]. seafoam shades flow into tints of butterscotch, setting a surfer scene against textures of leather and driftwood.
of course, regardless of the color pairings or thrifted treasures that wash up on the shores of your imagination—the most important details are the ones that come from your heart. just don’t forget to smell the flowers, dance to the music, taste the champagne, and revel in each moment that will become treasured memories to last a lifetime.

jessica’ s ADVICE: factor your wedding
bands into your budget. you’ll be wearing them long after
the cake is cut & the tent comes down, so set aside enough funds to ensure your rings reflect your true essence & style.
BRENT & JESS: While studying fine art and metalsmithing at Maine College of Art, Brent and Jessica Williams fell in love with jewelry design, and each other. After graduation, they set out to pursue their passion for sculpture-inspired pieces, and Brent & Jess was born. “We are inspired by the sentimental nature of our craft,” Jessica says. “We wanted to offer an option for couples seeking pieces that go beyond the typical wedding band.”
Forging the perfect union of elegant aesthetic and technical expertise, this duo crafts keepsakes that are truly one-of-a-kind. Starting with custom fingerprint wedding bands, they have expanded their services to include signature engraving and a variety of rings, necklaces, and charm bracelets. “Tastes and styles are ever-changing,” Jessica says. “In the future, we look forward to developing designs that speak to new trends while upholding our mission of personalized service.”

>> PLANNING A CELEBRATION IS TRULY A TEAM EFFORT. AS YOU PREP FOR YOUR “I DO’S,” SET UP A “PLAYBOOK” FOR YOUR FAMILY MEMBER MEMBERS TO ENSURE EACH & EVERY “TEAMMATE” PERFORMS LIKE A WEDDING ALL—STAR. meet the PLAYERS
sweat out the STRESS
TEAM BUILDING:
PLAY BALL:
Get to know your “teammates.” Before the planning process kicks into gear, set up a few casual family functions to create lasting relationships. Whether it be a backyard barbecue or a hiking trip, organize activities that will allow your loved ones to have some fun and get acquainted. A good sign you’ve established team camaraderie is when it’s comfortable for all parties to be able to call or e-mail each other.
Take some time away from planning and schedule in group exercise with your loved ones. Not only is it a proven stress reliever, it will strengthen your “team” spirit. Invite local “players” to a touch football game in the backyard or a Sunday afternoon hike. Dance lessons are also a great way to get in shape and prep for the wedding day. Encourage your parents to tag along–you’ll have more fun and be more confident when it’s time to step up to the plate for your dance solos.
organize a HUDDLE ALL HANDS IN:
the engagement is official–from now on you and your families will be operating as a team. you’ll need a training regimen to get yourselves ready for the big event to ensure celebration success.

shares her top wedding-worthy secrets to make your day a home run.
Set “team meetings” to keep everyone in the loop with the same information. Once the big items have been settled–budget, date, and location–organize regular planning “huddles.” It’s up to you how often you get together to share progress and information. Conference calls, iChat, and Skype are great ways to include loved ones near and far.
take NOTE TRACK YOUR STATS:
Make notes and keep a tally of names and relationships of the “players” and extended members of your new family. Prep yourself to remember professions, children’s names, and spouses of your “teammates.” Not that there’s going to be a quiz, but it is a way to familiarize yourselves with the people that you may meet at your shower, the rehearsal dinner, and most importantly–your big day.
take a time OUT STEP OFF BASE:
You’ll need a break from all things “W”–a call, a chance to have dinner with your parents, or each other, without mentioning “wedding” is a good way to stay attuned to the other aspects of your lives. Whether it be a coffee date with your mom or a basketball game with your dad, carving out time to spend together before you say “I do” is essential. Declare some nights “wedding free” in advance so you can relax and enjoy each other’s company.

found each other on the web, local wedding photographer Brea McDonald opted to give online dating a shot. Warily browsing through one dating site, she came across Scott Sudol’s profile. “We clicked instantly and spent hours on the phone,” Brea says. Scott was living in Ipswich, MA and Brea was in York, ME, so they decided to meet halfway at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport, MA for their first date. Wandering the park’s beautiful trails the pair talked for hours, ending the day with a romantic picnic in the grass. “I’ll never forget that first day,” she says. “From then on we carved out time in our busy schedules to see each other, and the rest is history.” THE PROPOSAL. One chilly morning just before Thanksgiving, Scott
suggested the pair take a stroll through their favorite place, the park where they’d had their first date. Unsuspecting, and always happy to explore the trails, Brea agreed. As the couple reached a rocky outcropping overlooking the Merrimack River, Scott confessed that he had suggested the walk with a special something in mind and revealed the rings hidden in his pocket. “It was so amazing and so perfect,” Brea says. “The day before he had asked for my parents’ blessing and they gave him my grandmother’s wedding rings.” The happy couple spent the holiday celebrating their upcoming nuptials with family and friends. THE DAY & DESIGN. Infusing rustic sensibilities with glamourous touches,
Brea and Scott’s special day was the epitome of country chic. The couple chose a color palette of deep purple and soft champagne to dress up the hand-hewn and historic Barn at Flanagan Farm. Organic elements and warm touches crafted an atmosphere of down-home elegance. Placecards clothes-pinned to chicken wire welcomed guests to the celebration, where lace-cut metallic votives and lanterns filled the space with a romantic glow. Branches and greenery topped tablescapes adorned with fresh-picked blooms in rich shades of dusty rose, eggplant, and ivory. “Our cake was the sweet centerpiece of the celebration,” Brea says. “Iced with the lace pattern from my dress and topped with exquisite sugar flowers, it was truly a work of art.”

do—they were college sweethearts. Following graduation they moved to New York City together to pursue their careers. For the next several years, their relationship and commitment to one another continued to grow. After multiple trips crossing the Atlantic to see one another while Brian was working in London, it became clear the timing was right to make it official. THE CEREMONY. When it came time to say “I do,” the couple knew they wanted to be in New England, and fell in love with the historic St. Ann’s Episcopal Church in Kennebunkport. Honoring the old-world charm of the locale, the pair opted for a traditional ceremony infused with personal touches. The bride wore her mother’s wedding gown—no alterations needed!—and St. Ann’s organist played beautifully for the bridal procession. A reading from A Gift By The Sea completed the day with sweet sentiment.

reflected the couple’s simple and sophisticated style. A neutral palette of taupe, blush, sage, and cream set the tone for their garden-inspired soiree, allowing the natural beauty of Laudholm Farm to take center stage. Setting the tent back into the rolling pasture crafted a sense of enchanted seclusion. Loved ones enjoyed an open-air cocktail hour on the lawn, followed by dinner where dreamy, ruffled centerpieces topped reclaimed wooden tables for an effect of rustic romance. ADVICE
“tie the knot at a celebration site that truly captures your essence as a couple. a family friend offered their pastoral lakeside property for our wedding. we fell in love and got engaged in a farm setting, so it was perfect to come full circle and say ‘i do’ in a place that spoke to those memories.”
THE PROPOSAL. The pair had always shared a love of the outdoors, so it was
nothing out of the ordinary for Spencer to invite Adriana to join him for an afternoon hike. She met him at the horse farm where he was working and they set off to explore the surrounding foothills. They quietly trekked up the path, enjoying the brisk air and warm sunshine, until Spencer urged Adriana to pause for an amazing view. Taking her completely by surprise, he popped the question on a rocky outcropping overlooking the rolling pastures below.

A brief encounter left Adriana smitten, but she was leaving for college in the coming weeks and slowly forgot about the handsome stranger from the horse show. THE DAY & DESIGN. Infusing vintage elegance with modern sensibilities, Adriana and Spencer crafted an aura of old-world glamour with a trendy twist. The couple tied the knot in a touching outdoor ceremony, then proceeded to the lawn for cocktail hour where antique accents and fresh-picked blooms lent an air of rustic whimsy. Inside the tent, soft lavender, shimmering silver, and rich purple hues set the tone for romance. A mirrored bar added a contemporary edge to the atmosphere, as sparkling chandeliers glimmered above chic tablescapes topped with stately arrangements spilling from gleaming silver vessels. “The cake was absolutely amazing,” Adriana says. “From the intricate icing to the bedazzled brooch cake topper—matching my bouquet—it captured the essence of the ‘old meets new’ vibe that we were going for.”

to their perfect match. “We met at a mutual friend’s wedding. For weeks leading up to the big day our friend Andrea, the bride, insisted we would be perfect together,” Meghan says. The couple shared a few drinks and laughs at the reception, but they were living in separate cities and the time didn’t seem right. Months later, Teddy still couldn’t shake the feeling that he needed to see the charming woman from the wedding again. He made the trip from his home in Pittsburgh, PA to Wilmington, NC, where Meghan lived, to ring in the New Year. They spent the evening strolling the beach together, and as the clock struck midnight they shared their very first kiss.

Teddy traveled north to Lake Sunapee, NH for a waterfront escape with Meghan’s family. One breezy evening after dinner, Teddy suggested they go stargazing. Descending towards the water they realized the sky was rather cloudy, but decided to sit out and enjoy the evening anyway. Laying down on the dock, the clouds miraculously cleared to reveal a velvety starry sky. “I noticed something sparkling out of the corner of my eye and turned to see Teddy holding an engagement ring,” Meghan says. Over the moon with joy, she felt as if the stars above shone just for her. THE DAY & DESIGN. Inspired by the serene setting of the Lake Sunapee
Yacht Club, it was only natural that Meghan and Teddy turned to a nautical theme to reflect their timeless tastes. A classic palette of navy and white with pops of magenta set the tone for their cozy soiree rife with playful, preppy style. Following a traditional church ceremony, the newlyweds arrived at the reception on an antique Chris Craft boat, where loved ones let out a celebratory cheer from the docks festooned with balloons. Inside, sailor-striped runners and knotted rope table numbers continued the day’s waterfront whimsy while mercury glass vessels and bold, pink peonies added the perfect glamourous touch. A simple swiss-dot buttercream cake stole the show, crowned with whimsical glitter heart cake toppers.

ADVICE
“it was very important to us that our wedding reflect our way of life. we kept things simple, sourced as much as we could from our farm and put on the whole day without grid power. think about who you are as a couple, and incorporate what makes you fundamentally unique into your celebration.”

rugged coastline of New England, so in the Spring of 2006 she finally moved to Maine. Little did she know, the natural pull she felt to the Northeast was leading her to the love of her life. One breezy evening, mutual friends introduced her to fellow newcomer, Aaron Grim. The pair hit it off instantly and a summer of friendship blossomed into an autumn of love. Completely head over heels, the adventurous couple spent the following years volunteer farming all across the West Coast and Europe. They returned to Maine in 2011, where they happily settled down on land of their own to begin their lives together. THE PROPOSAL. In the depths of their first winter back in frosty New England, Briis woke up on February 29th with a sure feeling in her heart. She turned to Aaron and said: “I think we should get married!” There was no doubt in his mind, he agreed and the pair spent the perfect chilly day wrapped up in pre-wedded bliss. “We found out later that it is a tradition in Europe for women to propose to men on Leap Day,” Briis says. “It was the perfect coincidence to the perfect proposal.” THE DAY & DESIGN. When it came time to say “I do,” Briis and Aaron knew there would be no better place than their land. A “homemade” wedding in every sense of the word, the couple spent the summer before the celebration clearing ceremony and reception spaces, and growing the majority of the ingredients for their wedding day feast. Rustic touches and antique accessories crafted an aura of true homespun elegance. Mismatched china and DIY wildflower arrangements dotted tabletops where guests gathered to enjoy a delectable home-cooked meal followed by a pie potluck and a crackling bonfire. “Our wedding was truly a celebration of our union to each other, and to the land,” Briis says. “The following day, friends and family helped us raise our timber frame house—the place we would build our life together as husband and wife.”

BEFORE THE RING. Katrina Carr and Jay Rondeau’s love story began on the volleyball court. “We worked together and played in the same office league,” Jay says. “Katrina was the team’s star. My skills weren’t always on point, but delivered plenty of comic relief.” Joining a traveling sand court league, the pair spent three years of long rides and hours of practice becoming the best of friends–and somewhere along the way, they fell in love. THE PROPOSAL. Eager to share her heritage with Jay, Katrina planned a trip
across the pond to visit her relatives in England. Realizing a romantic getaway to Europe would be the perfect time to propose, he spent weeks leading up to the trip searching for a ring. Upon arrival in Britain their itinerary was jam-packed, but Jay managed to carve out a few hours of alone time near Katrina’s favorite spot, The Tower of London. When they missed the official tour of the site, he improvised and suggested they explore a nearby bridge. As the sun began to set, Jay took pause on a bench overlooking the water, disguising his surprise with complaints of a sore ankle. “All of a sudden I turned around to see him kneeling, with the most beautiful ring in his hands,” Katrina says. “Though we had only been officially dating for ten months, I knew there was no one else I’d rather spend my life with.” THE DAY & DESIGN. Drawing upon the quaint character of Whitney’s
Inn, Katrina and Jay crafted an enchanting rustic-chic fete gussied up with whimsical touches. “We wanted to stay true to the barn’s simplistic elegance, while reflecting our own quirky tastes,” Katrina says. “A palette of slate grey and coral–my favorite colors–with muted turquoise tied everything together.” Antique keys affixed with kraft paper place tags, complete with the couple’s custom mustache motif, welcomed guests to the celebration where bold chevron print runners and DIY coffee filter “blooms” added a colorful pop to the venue’s timber interior. Wedding-themed mad libs stood in for a traditional guest book, as loved ones enjoyed a delectable donut bar and sips of delicious bottled beer, brewed by the groom himself.

her fair share of harsh New England winters, she moved to San Diego, CA to enjoy some well-deserved sunshine. Working as a graphic designer and marketing coordinator for a real estate firm, she became instantly smitten with broker, Isaac Little. After Ashley’s first day at the office a group of coworkers went out for a few drinks. “We were naturally drawn to each other,” she says. “We spent the whole night talking—it was as if we’d been friends for years.” THE PROPOSAL. When the pair planned a trip back East to visit family and
friends in Maine, Isaac knew it would be the perfect time to pop the question. Enlisting the help of his future sister-in-law, he plotted to pick out a diamond at Ashley’s favorite local jeweler and propose before they returned to San Diego. All week long it was nearly impossible to escape to go ring shopping, until they found time to sneak away while Ashley prepped for a night out with friends. The following day, the couple set out to explore the cliffs beyond Fort Williams. Isaac asked Ashley to pose for a picture and reached in his pocket to reveal a ring box instead of a camera. Blissfully betrothed, they returned to her parent’s house to celebrate with family and friends. THE DAY & DESIGN. California cool met classic New England charm at
Ashley and Isaac’s oceanside fete. The couple chose a warm color palette of pinks and peach with pops of gold to strike the perfect chord of West Coast whimsy. “As a graphic designer I have always been inspired by bold, aztec prints,” Ashley says. “I designed all of our paper pieces with this playful, geometric style in mind.” Watercolor-washed placecards in the day’s shades welcomed loved ones to the TEIA Club, where chevron-print runners lined simple tablescapes topped with organic wildflower-inspired arrangements. DIY three-dimensional paper shapes—hand-painted and folded by the bride— added textural interest to the design’s triangle motif, as bistro lights sparkled overhead. The evening ended on a sweet note with a classic candy bar, outfitted with the newlyweds’ favorite sugary treats.

their casual office friendship would blossom into everlasting love. “Casey was new to the company and often asked me for help with her paperwork,” Amy says. “I was completely oblivious to her advances–looking back now we laugh about how obvious she was being. We finally went out for drinks one evening, and I realized there was something very special about this girl.” Completely smitten, they tried to keep their relationship platonic, but there was no denying their connection and they’ve been together ever since. THE PROPOSAL. Every year Amy’s family gathers on Thanksgiving night
to decorate their Christmas tree, and she was excited to bring Casey home to celebrate the holiday for the first time. Following a cozy dinner, everyone changed into matching pajamas–this year’s ensemble featured hot pink onesies– to begin trimming the tree. In the height of holiday cheer, Casey handed Amy an ornament box. “She said it was an early gift, to celebrate our first Christmas together,” Amy says. Inside, a shimmering snowflake ornament sparkled with the words “Will you marry me?” Of course, Amy said “Yes!” THE DAY & DESIGN. Using a mishmash of antique accessories and country
chic accents, Amy and Casey crafted a rustic atmosphere brimming with warmth and welcome. A muted palette of ivory and cream with burlap touches perfectly complemented the hand-hewn character of the Barn at Bishop Farm with an air of ethereal grace. Antique keys affixed to a repurposed door led guests to their seats, where dreamy white blossoms spilled from simple mason jar vessels. In lieu of a traditional guest book, loved ones wrote happy messages for the newlyweds on an antique windowpane and toasted to love late into the evening beneath the lively sparkle of strung bistro lights.

friends, Marissa Greer and Gavin Kivett. The pair shared a love of nature and adventure and spent their teenage years becoming the best of friends. After high school, Marissa attended the University of New Hampshire and Gavin left New England for Lehigh University in Pennsylvania. Despite the distance, they still maintained a close friendship, enjoying visits to their respective campuses and summers spent at their childhood home. As the years passed, it became clear that their bond was undeniable. The treasured friendship of their youth blossomed into everlasting romance and the couple moved back to Massachusetts to finally be together. THE CEREMONY. After dating for 11 years, the question for Marissa and Gavin
was not “if,” but “when.” One afternoon in June the couple set out for a rigorous hike through the White Mountains with their dog Moose. They reached the peak of Wildcat Mountain and settled down for lunch overlooking Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington. Soaking in the breathtaking view, Marissa barely noticed Gavin slip something out of his pocket until he was down on bended knee. “I couldn’t believe it,” Marissa says. “Just the three of us surrounded by the beauty we love so much, it was simply perfect.” THE WEDDING WEEKEND. Dreaming of a woodland-inspired celebration
with rustic touches, Marissa and Gavin knew Toad Hill Farm would be the perfect place to tie the knot. “We love the colors and textures of the New England countryside,” Marissa says. “We wanted the details of our design to complement the farm’s natural beauty.” Soft shades of sage, apricot, and blush set the tone for the couple’s enchanted forest fete where lush moss and fresh-picked blooms graced tablescapes for an effect of organic elegance. Small repurposed boxes served as escort cards, guiding guests to tables named after the newlyweds’ favorite hiking spots–each featuring a sepia-tone snapshot of the couple on the peaks. Firefly lanterns, made by the mother of the bride, set the celebration aglow late into the evening as guests danced the night away.
