Fall and winter in New York are a true feast for the senses, from the gorgeous, fiery hues of autumn hillsides to the near-silent rustle of the first snowfall, from the crunch of a fresh-picked local apple to the unmistakable tang of wood smoke in the air. Whether you’re drawn to the historic views of the Hudson Valley or the scenic majesty of the Adirondack’s high peaks, each of the state’s many distinct regions has its own appeal that, like our famous foliage, is at its best at this time of year. We’ve got everything you need to make it a day to remember, and even if the weather is chilly, the warm welcome you’ll receive will make you feel right at home. We can’t wait to see you!

For example, we worked with internationally acclaimed floral and event designer Ariella Chezar on “Vintage Finds” (page 143) to create beautiful and practical ways to integrate vintage pieces and found objects into your wedding décor, for a look that’s completely one-of-a-kind. And we created new wedding-color palettes (page 79), ranging from the whimsical to the extravagant, that brides tell us are all inspiring. That’s what we do at WellWed: discover the most exciting ideas, both traditional and innovative, for unique weddings.

There’s something inherently romantic about fall and winter – they’re seasons when things slow down a bit, when you might feel like the only bride in the world instead of another in a long line of summer wedding weekends. So soak in the season. Light a fire. Eat something that’s been cooking since morning. Flaunt your favorite color like an autumn forest. With this, our third fall/winter issue of WellWed in New York, I hope we inspire you to revel in the seasonal possibilities. Consider this our take on “tidings of comfort and joy” – I think you’ll find this issue packed with plenty of both.

M. Jewelry in Clifton Park, New York, has been fashioning bridal jewelry for close to a decade. For the past three years, Louise has turned her attention to creating custom pieces for brides-to-be, and her genuine passion for designing distinctive jewelry shines through. McManus notes, “I think it’s important to wear something unique on your wedding day, and most women are surprised to find that custom jewelry costs about the same as mass-produced pieces you’d find in a department store. Many brides find that handmade jewelry that they helped design is a meaningful gift for their bridesmaids.” Photography EMMA DODGE HANSON

Unlike off-the-shelf pieces, McManus’ work features only the finest semiprecious stones, 14k gold or silver wire, and Swarovski crystals to ensure exceptional quality. She meticulously sketches out designs for her clients, working closely with them in person or via e-mail, before she creates each one-ofa-kind piece. In addition to her jewelry business, McManus also works at Lily Saratoga, a bridal boutique in Saratoga Springs, New York. It’s a position she loves, and her work keeps her abreast of all of the bridal industry’s latest trends. On most mornings you can find McManus with a steaming cup of coffee in hand, perusing

bridal blogs online. The images she comes across offer inspiration that she’ll later put to good use working one-on-one with brides to turn their dream necklace or earrings into a sparkling reality.

house brought Maie Vaga and Jim Webb together.

Jim, a Massachusetts native, had fond memories of his first place in Mission Beach, California, and stopped by one day after he’d moved out to meet the home’s new inhabitants. Maie, who’d been a year behind Jim moving from the East Coast to the West, immediately recognized the cute guy from the end of the street who was always outside fixing surfboards when she pedaled by on her bike. The attraction was pretty much instant, and soon Maie and Jim were moving back and forth across the country together, first to a place in the Sierra Nevada near Lake Tahoe, then to Massachusetts, and finally back to San Diego. “You really know you can spend the rest of your life with someone after all those moves!” says Maie. Speci a In 2006, Maie and Jim were camping in Northern Maie’s l Touch: m om , a California among the giant redwoods at Sequoia d e s i g ner, pu f loral National Park. They were scruffy and none too ll e d a ll t h e fresh but totally delighted with life when they st o ps w i o ut th th e stopped for a riverside picnic. Maie sprawled on a arrange m e nts . boulder to soak up the sun while Jim hunted in the river for a rock to add to Maie’s collection. The water was so cold Jim had to catch his breath, but he reached down into it, saying he’d found the perfect rock for Maie… and brought out a ring. Maie was so overwhelmed with emotion that she didn’t even register what he was saying. She was totally surprised — and even more surprised when Jim told her that he’d secretly flown to visit Maie’s dad in New Jersey to ask for his permission to propose to Maie and that he’d conspired with Maie’s best friend, a jewelry designer, to create a ring using a diamond that had been Maie’s great-grandmother’s. Choosing a location for the wedding was easy. As much as they loved California, Maie and Jim had grown up in the Northeast and missed the change of seasons. The site they chose in Upstate New York — positioned almost exactly three hours from Jim’s family

tent; and Maie herself made the invitations and other paper goods. The wedding was intentionally eclectic: Maie likes the combination of traditional elements with more unexpected ones. Maie’s peach dress and the rich orange dresses of her bridesmaids were balanced by Jim’s chocolate-brown velvet suit and his groomsmen’s ties in various shades of orange.

“It was an opportunity for all of us to live in that moment together. I feel like weddings really bring out the The day itself was such a whirl that Maie didn’t stop until after love for everyone.” Maie’s parents’ friends, the Popovics, generously volunteered their Windham home for the wedding celebration. Maie and Jim’s friends and family jumped in to contribute to the wedding: Maie’s uncle, a pastor, performed the ceremony; Maie’s mom, a floral designer, pulled out all the stops with arrangements for both the ceremony and the reception; a friend played the music; another friend, Noral Farrell, made all the wedding jewelry; Maie’s grandmother contributed two Polish statues and antique cut-glass vases for the décor; Jim and his groomsmen found vivid birch trees to decorate the

midnight. “I put my dress on at 11 in the morning, and I didn’t go to the bathroom again until 2 the next morning,” she says. “I just forgot with everything going on! Once the day starts, it doesn’t stop — I didn’t stop for anything.” For Maie and Jim, celebrating their love surrounded by friends and family was a beautiful experience. “You never know what the future holds,” says Maie. “It was an opportunity for all of us to live in that moment together. I feel like weddings really bring out the love for everyone.”

I

t was Rochester, New York, that brought Grace Vangeison

and Chris Johnston together. They first met as students at the University of Rochester, where Grace served as coach for Chris’s swimming team for her sorority’s annual fundraiser, which combined synchronized swimming and relays, with hilarious results. The crush was instant and mutual. But it wasn’t until almost three years later, when they were getting ready for graduation, that Grace and Chris admitted they’d been attracted to each other for years. It might have seemed like an inauspicious time to start a relationship, but the couple was determined to make it work. After eight months apart, with Chris employed and Grace doing the coursework for her Ph.D., Chris came back to Rochester for his MBA, and the two have been inseparable ever since. Still, Chris made Grace work hard for a proposal. While on vacation in Ocean City, New Jersey, the athletic couple found themselves huffing and puffing in 100-degree Speci a l To temperatures and overbearing humidity on a seaglassu G r a c e u s e d c h: hunting expedition. Exhausted, windblown, and her great-gr sweaty, Grace looked up when Chris said, “Oooh, a n d m oth er’s su g a r c o look.” But instead of a piece of seaglass, he was o k i e r e holding a diamond ring. ci p e ma

to ke leafs h a p e d co o k i e f a v o rs .

“To this day, I have still not actually said ‘yes,’” says Grace. “I just stuck out my left hand and let Chris slip the ring on my finger.” It’s become a running joke that when Grace wants a new piece of jewelry, she suggests another seaglass-hunting trip to Ocean City, Maryland.

“The only bad part was that we had to hike and bike the whole way back home to tell our families,” says Grace. “The adrenaline helped — that, and the fact that the wind was at our backs!” Chris was from Pennsylvania and Grace from Maine, but after eight years of living there, Rochester felt like home. It was where they had met, where they’d fallen in love, where they’d built a life together — and it was where they wanted to get married. They immediately knew that the Inn at the Old University Club was the perfect setting — intimate and welcoming and connected to their alma mater, which had been such an important part of their lives.

w

55

56 { w e llw e d.com }

When it came to planning the wedding, Grace took a relaxed approach, finding a planner who understood the kind of ceremony she and Chris wanted and trusting her to bring their vision to reality. That gave Chris and Grace the opportunity to focus on the little things that would make their day special. Grace had the idea to use her great-grandmother’s recipe for sugar cookies to make leaf-shaped cookie favors, and carried her bouquet with one of her grandmother’s old handkerchiefs wrapped around it. Grace had been named for her great-grandmother, so those touches had special meaning for her. Chris and Grace chose “J” wine for the reception, both for its symbolic meaning as their new, shared name as well as for its flavor.

Grace opted to rent everything, from the reception tables to the china, instead of going with the venue’s party stock, to give the wedding a truly one-of-a-kind feeling. And because she couldn’t choose between them, she ended up with two wedding dresses: a flowing Vera Wang for the ceremony and a dance-perfect number by Reem Acra for the reception. The couple and their friends and family kept the dance floor packed all night, except for when two of Chris’s goofy high school buddies took the stage to serenade the newly married couple with a hilarious rendition of a romantic tune. Having a wedding planner helped Grace and Chris enjoy everything about the wedding without having to stress about the details. And the right vendors made all the difference, Grace says, because she knew she could relax and let them do what they did best while she and Chris soaked in the experience.

hen Cate Ellison met Jake Mills at a little bar in

New York City’s West Village, the attraction was instant. Cate walked right up to where Jake was standing at the bar, and the two spent the next three hours talking. That conversation kept going strong for a full year and a half, and was still keeping them busy one weekend when they took a sailing trip off Long Island with friends. Jake thought it would be fun to spend the night on the shore and enjoy the beach for another day, and Cate, who can’t get enough of the beach, enthusiastically agreed. They woke up early for a morning walk and had the long stretch of shoreline to themselves. As they watched the sunlight sparkling on the crashing waves, Jake asked Cate to marry him. They’d talked about marriage before, but Cate had no idea that Jake was going to pop the question and was shocked to discover c h: that he’d managed to find the perfect ring without her Specia l Tou knowing about it.

O ne of Jake’s t groomsmen brough a vintage Polaroid otos camera to snap ph of th e bridal party.

Determined to start their married life as soon as possible, Cate and Jake ended up with just four months to plan the wedding. The location was easy: Jake’s home in Saratoga Springs was one of their favorite spots, and much of their relationship had been spent there. A wedding was the perfect opportunity to bring family and friends to the town they loved. Cate, who hails from Connecticut and has called New York City home for the past decade, and Jake, who grew up near Saratoga before moving to New York, also liked that the location was convenient for their New England–area families. The venue was a cinch, too: As soon as Cate and Jake saw the glorious Victorian Canfield Casino, they fell in love with the elegant historic space. “There were very few available dates, so we decided to take a chance and risk the weather,” says Cate.

The chance paid off. It was a perfect winter day as Cate walked down the aisle to a guitar arrangement created by her uncle, an accomplished musician. Cate and Jake wrote their own vows and wedding ceremony the morning before the wedding, giving the event a sweetness and spontaneity. They chose two special readings for the ceremony: an E.E. Cummings poem and a work by Pablo Neruda. Cate’s uncle did all the music for the ceremony, including a beautiful arrangement of

w

The Beatles song “I Will.” Soft silvers, grays, and ivories punctuated by vivid red pomegranates set off the Victorian opulence of the space, and candles gleamed and twinkled on every surface. “The space is so beautiful and grand, we didn’t need much else,” Cate says. Guests snuggled under silver pashminas draped thoughtfully over their chair backs to enjoy a selection of wines handpicked by Jake. Instead of serving a wedding cake, Cate and Jake cut into a tiny cake while their guests enjoyed individual chocolate mousse domes. Originally, Cate intended to plan the wedding on her own, but with the short timeline and her busy life, she reached out to a wedding planner, and is so glad she did. “I cannot say enough about how great our wedding planners were and how stress-free they made our wedding day,” says Cate, who says the day itself was totally smooth sailing.

Cate and Jake wrote their own vows and wedding ceremony the morning before the wedding, giving the event a sweetness and spontaneity. Cate was touched that her mom chose one of her late grandmother’s dresses to wear for the ceremony, linking past and present. And everyone was delighted when the groom jumped up to grab the microphone and serenaded his new bride with the band. As snow fell softly beneath a glowing full moon, Cate and Jake reveled in the love of their friends and family around them. “It was exhilarating and so full of joy,” Cate says.

ourtney Storti knew that Corey Fountain was the

boy for her — but 16-year-old Corey wasn’t too impressed with the 13-year-old cousin of his pal John. Over the following years, Corey and Courtney ran into each other now and again at parties, but it wasn’t until John’s wedding that they really clicked. Even then, nothing really came of it, since Courtney and Corey were living in different states. But when they both ended up in their hometown of Rochester, New York, Corey wrangled Courtney’s number from John and asked her out. Courtney didn’t actually realize it was a date until well into the evening, but by then it didn’t matter — it was clear that there was something there. After a few years of dating, they moved in together. Just before heading out of town on business, Corey made a special dinner for the two of them and joined Courtney on the back deck, where they were enjoying a fire in the fire pit. He presented Courtney with a small silver box… with a c h: Specia l Tou flipbook inside. As an art director, Corey frequently ey surprised Courtney with his creative gestures, so Courtney and Cor she started flipping the pages eagerly, laughing at asked th eir friend the illustrated history of their relationship Corey ced John , wh o introdu t had created and titled “Corey and Courtney in a th em , to of ficiate ‘Bullseye’: A very short film written for Courtney by Corey.” Near the end, the pictures showed Corey th eir wedding. getting pelted with arrows until one pierces his heart, making him grin. The final scene showed Corey on one knee, opening a box with a sparkling ring, and when Courtney looked up, the real Corey was doing the exact same thing. Overcome by emotion, Courtney said yes. Because they wanted to be married close to home, Corey suggested Canandaigua Lake, where he’d spent summers with his family as a boy. Courtney was undecided, but then they discovered the perfect cottage and knew they’d found their spot. The place was ideal for the fun, nontraditional celebration they had in mind. “We didn’t want people sitting around waiting for stuff to happen,” says Courtney. So instead of dinner and dancing, they planned a party that would let guests enjoy every inch of the charming cottage. The party started on the top deck, where they had food, drinks, and music, then meandered down the stairs to the second landing,

w

with a candy bar and gorgeous lake view. Another 40 steps brought guests to a third landing, where Courtney and Corey had set up a station with disposable cameras for impromptu photos. At the end of the stairs was a dock, with comfortable chairs and drinks. The idea was for guests to gradually migrate to the dock, enjoying the little adventures along the way.

“We didn’t want people sitting around waiting for stuff to happen,” says Courtney. So instead of dinner and dancing, they planned a party that would let guests enjoy every inch of the charming cottage. Courtney and Corey created a lot of the wedding details themselves, including the invitations, which Corey designed and they both assembled by hand (“We were thankful it was a small wedding!”

says Courtney). Corey built the wooden pedestals that held the ceremony’s flowers, and family and friends chipped in to help with other details, including the décor and cake. Corey’s stepmother spearheaded the decorating committee, designing and creating all the décor for the reception, including swags of organza and white satin bows, sleek tube vases full of lime green and black objects to reflect their lime, black, and white palette, and white paper bag luminaries tied with green ribbon. Even the rainy weather couldn’t dampen their celebration. Courtney was adamant that it wasn’t going to rain for their wedding day; Corey was convinced it would. But after two days of heavy rain and a very wet night for the rehearsal dinner, Courtney acknowledged the inevitable and decided to relax. They had tents and umbrellas, and a rainy wedding day is supposed to be lucky, after all. The weather held for the ceremony; when the rain started during the photos, it was already a perfect day.
