Devotion, whether it be to country or sweetheart, is rooted in pure, unwavering love, and is ever—present in today's wedding industry. There is just something about the fall and winter that exudes a feeling of togetherness. Maybe it’s the holidays, maybe it’s the desire for warmth, but during this time, I just crave connection with those I love. It is during this time that my heart aches the most for all the brave men and women in our armed forces who are away from those that mean everything to them. Here at WellWed Magazine, we are often lucky enough to witness not only fabulous nuptials but also true love — an illuminating, amazing, remarkable type of love that is impossible to miss in photos from a couple’s wedding day. For some couples, even when their lives have been disrupted by war and they live thousands of miles apart, or for those who have lost a loved one, this kind of love never fades. True love endures; it perseveres and carries on. My own grandfather, Clifford Austin, is a World War II veteran, and the inspiration for our vintage-chic “Always Faithful” gown shoot at Patriots Point in South Carolina (page 97). As a young man, he left his family to join the armed forces, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was held as a prisoner of war for many months. Our collection of stunning bridal couture is dedicated to his legacy, as well as the many men and women currently serving in the military, and others that have tragically lost their lives. It is my hope that this season, brides will remember what weddings are all about. Get back to basics by using vintage and antique elements throughout your celebration. We’ve included amazing advice from some of our favorite wedding professionals (page 89 & 95) that can add a truly personal element to any celebration, and our pick-your-palette ideas (page 125) are sure to result in fun and fresh inspiration. Far from ever looking dated, photos from your vintage-inspired wedding will retain a timeless elegance that will be as everlasting as your devotion to one another. More important, remember what your wedding day is all about: a celebration of love. Spend a few moments this fall and winter just taking in the vibrant foliage, letting soft snowflakes kiss your cheeks, and keeping those you love close to your heart, no matter how far away they might be.

name: STACEY VANWALDICK-VAN CAMPEN business: PROMISE ME CHOCOLATE Years in Business: TWO location: OSWEGO, NEW YORK website: PROMISEMECHOCOLATE.COM

Stacey VanWaldick-Van Campen first became interested in chocolate in an unconventional place: the metal shop. While completing her graduate studies in jewelry and metalsmithing at Syracuse University, she was encouraged to experiment with materials other than metals and gemstones. Inspired by the challenge, Stacey became adept at wax carving, mold making, and casting. She decided it might be fun to cast melted chocolate into her molds and experiment with edible pigments, something the chocolate industry had yet to see. It was with this thought that Promise Me Chocolate was born. Established just two years ago, the company has become nationally recognized for its unique designs and tasty products. When Stacey isn’t working as a chocolatier, she teaches art and jewelry making to high schoolers, striving to inspire her students just as her art teacher did her. With talent and originality on her side, Stacey has undoubtedly taken two different interests and combined them into something very sweet. 32

Known for his whimsical tendencies, Hamlin Au woke Amy Yeh up one morning while she was visiting him in Seoul, South Korea, so they could watch the sun rise over the sleeping city. Amy had arrived the night before and planned to help Hamlin prepare for his move back to Connecticut before they toured Taiwan together. Once they had hiked to the peak of the Bugaksan, a mountain overlooking the presidential palace, Hamlin handed her a note with a proposal sweetly penned in his own words. As Amy realized what he was asking, tears of joy streamed down her face while Hamlin got down on one knee and asked her to be his wife. The couple had originally met in New York City. Amy had just begun graduate studies at Columbia University and Hamlin had just returned to New York after completing the first year of his MBA and summer internship in Washington, D.C. Amy had started to attend a church in downtown Manhattan that Hamlin also happened to be a part of. His best friend encouraged him to call her, and it wasn’t long before they were a couple. Both Amy and Hamlin came from musical backgrounds, which had given them a lot in common from the beginning. Amy is a classically trained musician, and it was only natural that she got along so well with Hamlin, who had always been involved in music, whether it was through studio recording work, songwriting, or vocal performance. They had even both taken classes at Scratch DJ Academy in New York City.

In the midst of the reception, Amy played Hamlin a song on her violin, showcasing her extensive musical training.

46

w

When it came to wedding planning, Amy and Hamlin based much of their preparation on the concept of “combinations,” or, as Hamlin explains it with a quote by Jim Collins, “The genius of the ‘and’ and the tyranny of the ‘or.’” The result was a fun blend of their personalities, interests, and backgrounds. They began by choosing Art Omi in Chatham, New York, for their reception site because of its perfect combination of country charm and urban inspiration, which mirrored Amy’s rural upbringing throughout the Midwest and Pennsylvania and Hamlin’s urban Brooklyn childhood. They also liked its New York location, since so much of their history as a couple was based there. To honor their Chinese heritage, the couple planned a traditional Chinese tea ceremony the night before the wedding, but served gourmet lasagna to all in attendance. At the reception, they replaced the conventional green salad at dinner with a Korean rice dish called bi bim bop to pay homage to the country where they became engaged, and guests were served a mixture of Italian and other Mediterranean food during the cocktail hour to symbolize

Hamlin’s prior schooling in Italy and the strong Italian influence in his hometown of Brooklyn. Everyone was delighted when it snowed on the couple’s wedding day. Guests kept warm by dancing to a jazz band the bride and groom chose to have in lieu of a DJ or a more traditional form of entertainment. In the midst of the reception, Amy played Hamlin a song on her violin, showcasing her extensive musical training. Amy’s brother-in-law, Tim Ho, brought photography equipment to set up an impromptu photobooth for guests to take pictures, and there were also two huge whiteboards for everyone to write thoughts and well wishes to the newlyweds, a personal touch guests loved. All in all, the reception was a hit — a true celebration for all. As the night was winding down, Amy and Hamlin managed to share a quiet moment together on the dance floor, holding each other in time to a soft jazz tune, no doubt remembering their sweet sunrise hike in Seoul and all the shared laughter, conversations, and quiet moments that had brought them there.

It was a beautiful July day when JP Elario decided he wanted to propose to Kris Ann Blanchette. The couple had taken a trip to Seneca Lake and were strolling through a vineyard together, bathing in the late afternoon sunshine. JP, a photographer, was taking shots of Kris Ann as she made her way through the vineyard. He asked her to walk several steps ahead and look back over her shoulder at him. “I did this a couple of times, then the third time I was on my knee, holding her ring in hand,” says JP. Of course, Kris Ann said yes. "I wish I had gotten it on camera. Seeing her face was one of the best moments of my life," he says. Kris Ann and JP are both more than familiar with the wedding business. As the owner of Fleurtacious Designs, Kris Ann had seen JP working alongside his father at Joe Elario Photography on more than one occasion. Though they had run into each other at weddings dating as far back as 1999, the timing had just never been right. It wasn’t until 2005, when they were both working on a New Year’s Eve wedding, that sparks began to fly. JP had planned to approach her at the wedding to ask her out, and it turned out Kris Ann had similar plans. “Next thing we knew, it was January first and we began dating. Just like that, the photographer and the florist were an item,” he says.

They used an assortment of seasonal, all-white flowers — fringed tulips, cattleya orchids, and peonies — to keep things simple and classic.

52

w

After being a part of so many weddings over the years, it was important to Kris Ann and JP to make their celebration their own. They chose the Canfield Casino as their venue, a location that JP had been photographing since he was 11 and Kris Ann had worked in many times with her floral design company. Wanting to put their own twist on the space, the bride and groom opted for an elegant yet casual feel. They created a cozy lounge area for guests with a few highbacked white sofas, added a funky black-and-white checkered dance floor, and arranged for the ceremony to take place in the very same room, set up in a semicircle — something the wedding veterans had never seen before. “We believe this could be a new trend in the years ahead,” says JP. The couple also personally customized a delicious menu for their guests that included four grazing stations, one of which was small-plate comfort food, and an instant hit. Both Kris Ann and JP wanted the décor to be clean, elegant, and timeless. They used an assortment of seasonal, all-white flowers — fringed tulips, cattleya orchids, and peonies — to keep things simple and classic, arranging the flowers in white porcelain vases. As a way of incorporating their families, the bride and groom used the same knife to cut their cake that Kris Ann’s parents had used at their

own wedding 37 years before. Just after they had finished cutting the cake, the couple got a surprise — Krista Washburn, WellWed’s editor, had sent a Ben & Jerry’s Ice Cream cart to the reception. Unable to attend the wedding herself, she wanted to send a little piece of Vermont to be with the newlyweds. “What an amazing surprise and gift. It really made our wedding that much more awesome,” says JP. Most guests had their fill of comfort food – but ice cream was certainly difficult to pass up. Both Kris Ann and JP were more accustomed to working at weddings than being the guests of honor. However, JP notes that their special relationships with their vendors made the experience better than they could have imagined. “When you’re both in the wedding industry and you’re lucky enough to work alongside these people time after time, you know which vendors to choose and why,” he says. Being on the opposite end of the planning process had definitely been an experience for both. However, after years of watching other people say “I do,” it’s certain that this bride and groom were glad to be on the other side.

When Elizabeth Finkelstein danced in a local production of The Nutcracker when she was a little girl, there was no way of knowing that in the audience was a little boy named Ethan who would grow up to be the man she would marry. As a young woman, Elizabeth lived with her friend Rachel in Brooklyn. Rachel was Ethan’s cousin and had also danced in The Nutcracker as a child, which was why Ethan had attended. When Ethan also moved to the city and got a job there, Rachel took him out for a celebratory toast, and Elizabeth tagged along. It was the first time they officially met, and as soon as they did, they hit it off right away. They worked in the same neighborhood and began to meet often for lunch. Soon they were spending all their time together, exploring Brooklyn and discovering all of its quirks. “I knew that I loved him when we biked across a bridge in Brooklyn and stopped to kiss in the middle in a thunderstorm,” says Elizabeth. “Falling in love with him was simple and impossible to avoid.” One winter day, Elizabeth was invited by Ethan to join him and a few friends on a last-minute weekend getaway to the Poconos. She agreed to go on the trip, but when she and Ethan arrived, his friends were nowhere to be found. “Ethan pretended to talk to his friends on the phone, who supposedly were running late,” says Elizabeth. While they waited, she and Ethan wandered around town in the direction of Grey Towers, a beautiful historic mansion. It began snowing, the first snowfall of the year, as the couple sat on an iron bench on the mansion’s grounds. “It was chilly and perfect. It was then that he told me that his friends would not be coming,” says Elizabeth. Getting down on one knee, Ethan asked Elizabeth to be his wife. Elizabeth accepted as the snow fell around them, unable to imagine a more perfect proposal.

“FALLING IN LOVE WITH HIM WAS SIMPLE AND IMPOSSIBLE TO AVOID,” SAYS ELIZABETH.

For their wedding, Elizabeth and Ethan chose the themes of “where we’re coming from” and “where we’re going.” The celebration was held at Elizabeth’s parent's home in Queensbury, New York, where she had spent her entire childhood and where she had always dreamed of getting married. It was important for both to incorporate Brooklyn elements since it was not only their current home but also where they had met and fallen in love. However, they felt it important to involve elements of their families and personal histories as well. Elizabeth and Ethan decorated every table at their wedding with old pieces of china, silver, and crystal they had salvaged from their mothers’

and grandmothers’ basements. Elizabeth’s mother spent a lot of time in the months leading up to the wedding scouring eBay for vintage napkins suitable for the celebration, and they also had an antique typewriter and dozens of blank vintage postcards on which guests were encouraged to write words of advice to the bride and groom. The couple wrote their own vows and included their families as much as they could in the ceremony. Elizabeth was walked down the aisle by her father to a fiddler’s rendition of “You Are My Sunshine.” Elizabeth’s sister, who had also been married at the family home, read a passage from The Velveteen Rabbit, and Ethan’s mother read a prayer she had chosen herself. During the ceremony, they asked their grandmothers to come forward with words of advice for the couple. At their reception, Elizabeth and Ethan had The Blue Vipers of Brooklyn perform, a band that they often saw playing on the streets of their neighborhood. The day was a successful blend of the old and new — but the newlyweds knew that the best was yet to come.

Carolyn and Michael Linehan are two people who have not only experienced love at first sight, but also a second and third time. The pair first met at a meeting for an annual fundraiser, then again at a cotillion several weeks later, and once more at a fundraiser after that. Finally, months after their first meeting, they went on their first date. “From that moment on, we continued dating and were practically inseparable,” says Carolyn. One Sunday afternoon after they had been dating for several years, the couple made plans to take Carolyn’s grandmother out to lunch. Carolyn drove over to Michael’s house to pick him up and she found a mysterious note on the door reading “Please follow the rose petals.” “I saw a trail of rose petals and lit candles winding through the house and up the stairs. I followed the trail up the staircase, and I gasped when I saw Michael down on one knee,” says Carolyn. With U2’s “Beautiful Day” playing in the background, Michael proposed, to which Carolyn tearfully accepted. The couple toasted their engagement with champagne, but kept their plans with Carolyn’s grandmother. “We still took her to lunch that day, and she loves that she was the first person to celebrate with us,” Carolyn says. Although Carolyn and Michael toyed with the idea of having a destination wedding in Naples, Florida, where Michael’s parents live during the winter, they ultimately decided against it. “The more we thought about it, the more we leaned towards a winter wedding in our hometown of Rochester,” says Carolyn, who didn’t want their friends and family to have to worry about traveling a long distance.

“I FOLLOWED THE TRAIL UP THE STAIRCASE, AND I GASPED WHEN I SAW MICHAEL DOWN ON ONE KNEE,” SAYS CAROLYN.

The ceremony took place at the Linehan Chapel at Nazareth College, named after Michael’s parents many years ago. Michael's two sisters also had their weddings there, and Carolyn and Michael were excited to follow the family tradition. Each guest was given a small handheld candle as they arrived at the chapel, and when the bride and groom’s mothers lit the unity candle, they also lit their own small candles and used them to pass the flame to everyone in attendance. “This symbolized how all of our friends and family have been a light in our lives, starting with our mothers, since they gave us life,” says Carolyn. The bride and groom settled on the Oak Hill Country Club for their reception, a location that had special meaning to them, since Michael’s parents had also held their reception there 30 years before. Guests were delighted with the charming chocolate-brown color palette, a

choice inspired by their beloved chocolate lab, Charlie. “We also incorporated different elements of nature throughout the palette, including feathers, in a nod to the family bird farm where they raise pheasants, chuckers and quail,” says Carolyn. A magnificent ice sculpture included chiseled quails, and quail was even included on the dinner menu. For Carolyn, the night was everything she could have dreamed of for her wedding — with the exception of the couple’s first dance. “We took dance lessons for months leading up to the wedding. We were ready and excited to do our first dance to our song, ‘Everything’ by Michael Bublé,” she says. Unfortunately, the dance floor was a lot smaller than the one they had practiced on, and Carolyn had some trouble dancing in her gown. “The dance just went all wrong. Michael couldn’t get close to me for fear of stepping on my dress.” Finally, the couple executed a dip as the finale, glad for the awkward — but definitely memorable — dance to be over. It may have been less than perfect, but in the midst of an evening filled with such joy, the newlyweds hardly noticed.

Lori Schulweis is used to being in front of an audience. As the Production Coordinator on Live with Regis and Kelly, Lori agreed to appear on the show for a five-part series in which she was sent on five different dates chosen by both viewers and her family, to culminate in an all-expense-paid dream date in Paris. Lori participated in the series and even went to Paris, but none of the prospects went anywhere. She then opted to try different avenues for dating. “I decided to give finding my soulmate a try without the help of television cameras, and started to look online for Mr. Right.” Not long after, she got in touch with David Buder. They corresponded by e-mail for about a month, decided to meet in person, and knew right away that they had encountered something big. “We never got sick of each other,” says Lori. “We became best friends.” After dating for two years, Lori decided to surprise David on his birthday with a private cooking lesson with one of his favorite chefs, Masaharu Morimoto. However, it turns out that she was the one about to be surprised. “Halfway through the cooking lesson, Morimoto told us he would make us some special sushi,” says Lori. He placed a plate of sashimi in the shape of a rose as well as a closed scallop shell on the sushi bar. “Before I knew it, David was down on one knee and proposed with hidden television cameras capturing every moment,” says Lori. It turns out that he had timed his proposal to appear on the “Will You Marry Me?” series on Live with Regis and Kelly in the week leading up to Valentine’s Day. Opening the scallop shell, David took out a ring that had once belonged to Lori’s mother, who had passed away when she was 16. Lori accepted, ecstatic to be engaged to the love of her life.

INSTEAD OF A SPECIFIC COLOR PALETTE, lori AND DAVID DECIDED ON MORE OF A FEELING — “LUXE on a farm.”

70

w

Although Lori considers herself a city girl at heart, she simply fell in love with the Hayloft space at the Blue Hill at Stone Barns in Pocantico Hills, New York. Instead of settling on a specific color palette, Lori and David decided on more of a feeling — “luxe on a farm.” They wanted their guests to enjoy the splendor of a working farm without feeling like they were attending a hoedown. The ceremony was held on an outdoor courtyard underneath a gorgeous white and green huppa, and the reception was in the Hayloft. The couple embraced their theme by using seed packets designed by Ceci New York for the place cards. Each card had real seeds that guests were invited to take home and plant, a live souvenir. Lori placed different centerpieces on each table — weathervanes, lanterns, and fruit. “I didn’t want people

to walk into the space and feel like their table was one of many — every table was made to feel like a special moment all its own,” she explains. The vintage pieces gave the room a unique feel - sophisticated while still remaining cohesive with the rustic theme. The bridal party walked down the aisle to two guitarists playing “Pure Imagination” from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and Lori made her entrance to Cole Porter’s “True Love.” “I thought I was going to cry,” says Lori, “but through the spotlight all I could see was one of my friends pumping her fist in the air, and I literally let out a squeal of delight.” There is no doubt that Lori and David’s wedding lived up to the excitement of their on-air engagement. It was hard to believe how far they had come since meeting online and guests couldn't have enjoyed themselves more at that farm-inspired celebration. Though Lori was nervous as she made her way to the ceremony, when she finally saw her husband to be, “He grabbed my hand, and I felt completely calm and wasn’t nervous again all night — I guess that is how you know you are marrying the right person.”

For the lucky few, love at first sight is more than a myth, it’s a reality. Tami Moat and PJ Wilmot knew they had encountered something exciting after catching glimpses of each other at a pub where Tami worked during college. PJ came in one night with some friends, tired from playing golf at a nearby country club and not expecting to meet the love of his life. “We hit it off instantly, and upon his return a week later we began dating,” says Tami. Turns out love at first sight runs in families; PJ’s parents had met years earlier in a bar right down the street. It was only a matter of time before the couple took the plunge with an engagement. On vacation in Naples, Florida, for PJ’s birthday, the couple was strolling the beach together hand in hand when PJ noticed a perfect sand dollar at their feet: “I knew this was my moment, so as Tami bent down to pick up the sand dollar, I quickly fell on one knee and proposed.” Tami accepted, giving PJ the best birthday gift he could ever imagine. They left to go on a sunset cruise to the Gulf of Mexico that evening, and “Many hugs, kisses, tears, and champagne were shared by all,” says PJ. Both Tami and PJ knew they wanted to be married in New York and could think of no better place than PJ’s parent's country home in Pittsford. “Growing up, it was always a place where all were welcome and felt instantly at home. This is the same experience we wanted for our guests on our wedding day,” says Tami. The couple chose to hold the celebration under a tent in a beautiful open field on the property, with a romantic color scheme of pale yellow, coral, and pinks.

GUESTS WERE SURPRISED WITH AN ENCHANTING FIREWORKS DISPLAY BURSTING OVERHEAD, SOMETHING THE COUPLE HAD BEEN PARTICULARLY EXCITED ABOUT.

76

w

As the sun shone in, Tami walked down a beautiful aisle scattered with yellow and white rose petals, with a monogram “W” at the altar created with white rose heads. The white petals had been placed underneath the yellow, causing them to be whimsically revealed as the bridal party walked. Carrying on with the monogram theme, guests sipped from monogrammed water bottles and also tried peach Bellini cocktails, the bride’s favorite. Perhaps the guests’ most memorable element of the ceremony was a tree that the bride and groom had inscribed with their initials, encircled with a heart. As guests approached the reception, they were welcomed with vintage windowpanes that held the escort cards as well as vignettes of natural elements and flowers. “It was as if items were pulled out of

their family home. It made for a welcome setting for the guests,” says Tami. Friends and family relaxed in a shabby-chic lounge area with sofas and vintage coffee tables, and the dance floor was surrounded by a frame covered in curly willow. The couple also chose to hang flickering star lanterns above the dance area, making the guests feel as if they were dancing directly under the stars. As the sun set over the field, chandeliers cast a romantic glow and candlelight shone on the wedding party’s long harvest table, which had tall floral arrangements dripping with natural grasses, amaranthus, English garden roses, hydrangea, and pheasant feathers from the property. Soon, guests were surprised with an enchanting fireworks display bursting overhead, something the couple had been particularly excited about. At the end of the evening, the newlyweds left the celebration surrounded by thousands of twinkling lights strung in the trees and along the grounds, but they made sure to savor the moment before leaving. “This was a magical moment for PJ and me. We lingered there for what seemed like hours before we walked the short distance home hand in hand to start the next chapter in our lives.”

Inspired by the legacy of her grandfather, Clifford Austin, a World War II veteran and Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge, WellWed and Vermont Vows’ editor Krista Washburn sought a unique and fitting locale for this gown shoot. So we took to the skies, flying all the way to gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina, a gentle city rich with military history. The USS Yorktown is a real World War II aircraft carrier berthed at Patriots Point in nearby Mount Pleasant. Also on-site is an expansive museum which provided an extraordinary collection of historic ships and planes that saw action and conflicts from World War II to Desert Storm. These unique artifacts provided a fantastic backdrop for our vintage-inspired shoot and also served to remind us of the bittersweet sacrifice undertaken by brave men and women of years past. For all of our boys and girls in uniform, past and present, this is our tribute to you. Patriots Point is a naval and maritime museum in Charleston, South carolina.
