No bride wants to deal with a tropical storm on her wedding weekend, especially when her wedding is scheduled to take place on the beach. But that’s just what happened to Jodi Sandler when her August wedding to Jake Dell ’Aquila ended up sharing its date with a tropical storm warning. Lucky for Jodi, she had wedding planner Jenni fer Zabinsk i to see her through the storm. Zabinski, who runs the Wedding Library with partner Claudia Hanlin, has planned weddings from Florence to Mexico and wasn’t about to let a little thing like a tropical

Making every bride and groom feel like as much of a star as her many celebrity clients is Zabinski’s specialty. She has planned weddings for actor Lawrence Fishburne, producer Glenn Gordan,

and baseball player Chuck Knoblock, and her weddings have been featured on the pages of local and national wedding magazines. Zabinski loved the story of how Jodi and Jake fell in love. As neighbors in New York City, Jodi and Jake ran into each other frequently. When they started chatting, they realized that they’d both been students at Syracuse University at the same time and never met each other. Jodi and Jake wanted a formal wedding with a true Hamptons vibe. “Jodi wanted a beach wedding, but one that incorporated organic beach elements more subtly,” says Zabinski. “She wasn’t looking for sand and seashells. She wanted something that felt organic and rustic.” Zabinski worked with floral designer Matthew Robbins to incorporate beach elements like stones and driftwood into arrangements of delicate flowers. Rustic branches mingled with dainty chamomile and baby daisies in vintage vases in a sophisticated beachscape. To keep the neutral beach shades from becoming dull and one-note, Robbins incorporated pops of color to enliven the space. The celebration was a careful balance of sophisticated style and beach charm. And when the storm warnings threatened to interfere with Zabinski’s wedding plans, she took it in stride because she’d already planned for the possibility of bad weather and had come up with a solution that made Jodi and Jake happy. By the time the wedding ceremony began, the skies were clearing. For Colleen O’Keefe and James Rybakoff, their home in Quogue really is a house of dreams. James’ Hamptons home wasn’t much more than a construction site when he started dating Colleen in the fall of 2004, but that didn’t keep him from bringing Colleen with him to walk around the house, imagining the life they’d have there. “He’d say, ‘This is where our bedroom will be,’ or ‘Here’s where I will make fires for you and tuck you in at night,’ or ‘I’m building you a big kitchen so you can whip up some of your delicious onion soup for us,’” remembers Colleen. She was equally sure that James was the one. The couple met through a mutual friend over drinks when James made an unexpected appearance at a lounge where Colleen and her friend were chatting. Colleen later learned how serendipitous their meeting had been as she became familiar with James’ busy schedule. Colleen’s friend thought Colleen and James would make the perfect couple and worked a little matchmaker magic, inviting James to come to her own upcoming wedding. Colleen and James didn’t need much encouragement — the attraction between them was evident, and when James drove Colleen home from the wedding that night, he invited her to come out to the Hamptons with him the next day.

In spite of that sense of instant rightness, it took James four years to pop the question. Colleen and James had talked about marriage, but he was taking his time. “There were a lot of girls’ nights out discussing what he was waiting for,” laughs Colleen. “But I knew James loved me and wanted to marry me — I knew I just had to have a little more patience.” The wait, of course, was worth it, when James took Colleen on an engagement ring shopping trip to Tiffany, Graff, and Cartier. He made her wait four more months before he popped the question on a London holiday. There was no question that Colleen and James wanted to have the wedding reception at their Quogue home, but Colleen knew that a home wedding comes with plenty of challenges. Though she’s a very detail-oriented person and loves to plan events, Colleen enlisted the help of a professional wedding planner to ensure that everything ran smoothly for the big day. Colleen and James wanted to make their guests feel right at home, as though they were guests at an intimate dinner party rather than at a crowded reception. Colleen kept the guest list fairly small. “We had 60 guests, which I thought was a perfect number — I never felt overwhelmed by the number of people, and we had a chance to connect with everyone,” she says. Colleen chose a palette of soft browns, greens, and white to give the celebration a warm, organic feel. Tents in the couple’s yard housed reception tables and a dance floor complete with a band. Guests clustered around rustic tables topped with an eclectic mix of flowers and herbs in mason jars perched on slices of birch wood and flanked by mercury glass votives to nibble a Southern-inspired menu of hushpuppies with chipotle sauce, braised short ribs, and sliders made with pulled pork. The soul food fare continued for dinner with crab cakes, mashed sweet potatoes, and tiny banana cream puddings with classic vanilla wafers. Their wedding celebration was everything Colleen and James had dreamed of, and as they danced among their guests, happily surrounded by the people and the place they loved, it was clear that there’s really no place like home.

It took several months and time in four different states for Nicole Pellegrino to realize that she had way more than a crush on Jonathan Dulfon. Nicole’s friend Denise was dating Jon’s friend Jay. The four of them met on a blind date a friend had set up for Denise and Jay. Nicole and Jon came along for moral support, and though they chatted pleasantly while Denise and Jay hit it off, there was no love connection. Still, as Denise and Jay’s relationship grew more serious, Nicole and Jon found themselves spending more and more time together in New York, where Jay and Jon lived on Long Island, and in Massachusetts, Denise and Nicole’s home. Jon even joined Jay and Denise on a pilgrimage to Florida to see Nicole, who was visiting family there. In Florida, Nicole found herself looking forward to continuing her conversation with Jon every day and laughing more than she had ever laughed. When he spontaneously invited her to California after the Florida trip, Nicole agreed and soon found herself having a blast on the beach with Jon. The night before they were to head back to the East Coast, Nicole and Jon took one last trip to the beach together. Sitting on the rocks at Encinitas Beach, Jon admitted that he had started to develop strong feelings for Nicole, and she confessed she felt the same way. Managing a long-distance relationship was challenging, but Nicole and Jon traded weekends traveling and spent long hours on the phone. In October, Nicole took the plunge and moved to Long Island with her roommate Denise, who was still dating Jon’s best friend Jay. Jon’s family welcomed Nicole with open arms, and Nicole felt like she’d inherited another family along with her terrific boyfriend. Jon’s mother, in particular, made Nicole feel right at home even though she was battling a very serious illness at the time.

Jon wanted to surprise Nicole with his proposal, but finding a way to surprise the woman he spent most of his waking moments with was tricky. Fortunately, the weather intervened, surprising everyone with 12 inches of snow on Long Island in early March. With work cancelled, Nicole — a true New Englander — thought nothing would be more fun than snowshoeing on the snow-covered beach. As soon as Jon saw the waves crashing on the white shoreline, he knew that this was the spot. Nicole, however, overwhelmed by the freezing wind, decided to head back to the car and started sprinting back toward where they were parked, failing to realize that Jonathan was kneeling in the snow. When she tripped over her snowshoes

and looked back at Jon for help, she saw he was holding up a little black box. “I was so shocked I don’t even remember anything else he said after ‘Will you marry me?’” Nicole says. “I had never been so surprised in my life.” Since Nicole and Jon both love Long Island and the beach there, it was the obvious place for them to celebrate their marriage. Inspired by a beautiful turquoise necklace by Roberta Freyman, Nicole chose a palette of rich turquoise and brown for a non-traditional take on beach style. They carried the beach theme through their entire wedding, using lighthouse-shaped lanterns and shells for centerpieces, fishing nets for table coverings and painted beach rocks for table numbers. Nicole and Jon spent time coming up with beach-inspired music by artists like Bob Marley and Jack Johnson. Nicole wore a pearl watch that had belonged to Jon’s mother, who had lost her battle with cancer just a few months before the wedding. Though everyone felt her loss deeply, they knew how happy Jon’s mom had been about the upcoming wedding. Even the weather cooperated, sunny and not too hot, as Nicole and Jon celebrated their happy beginning.

When Dave Miller proposed to Dana LeVine, their pet dog, Calhoun, came over to check out the action. Calhoun had been racing up and down the beach at Ocracoke Island in North Carolina when Dave bent over to pick up a shell in the sand. Wrapped around the shell was an engagement ring. He dropped to one knee, and Calhoun came running over and sat expectantly beside them, as though waiting to hear what Dana would say. When Dana said yes, Calhoun scampered off again, satisfied. Dana and Dave aren’t your typical couple. In the decade they have been involved, they’ve lived in six different places, together and separately, including Massachusetts, New York, Pennsylvania, Georgia, Connecticut, and North Carolina. But ever since their first meeting — when they were both students at Yale — Dana and Dave have shared a strong connection, never going a single day without talking to each other. After years of living apart, they finally settled together in North Carolina, and Dave didn’t waste any time asking Dana to be his wife. It’s no surprise that this offbeat couple planned a wedding full of unique details — and no surprise that they chose to incorporate animals into their ceremony. (In addition to being the proud mama of Calhoun, Dana is a veterinarian.) Choosing a location for their wedding was easy: though Dana and Dave call North Carolina home, Dana grew up in New York, and her family still lives there. The North Fork, with its pristine beaches and rolling vineyards, seemed like the perfect spot to introduce their friends and families to the best of Dana’s hometown. They were delighted to discover The Old Field, the only location on the North Fork with both a beach and vineyard, giving them the best of both worlds.

Much love and thought went into the details for the wedding celebration. A friend who is almost a second mother to Dana wove the chuppah for the wedding ceremony, while another friend who is a rabbi in New York City performed the service. Other friends pitched in to provide violin and piano music for the ceremony. One of the musicians, who also makes jewelry, created a special wedding necklace and earrings for Dana, and another friend sewed a wedding purse to match her gown. Calhoun walked proudly down the aisle as ring bearer, with Dana’s and Dave’s wedding rings tied to her decorated collar. Dana used rocks her mother and late grandmother had collected over the years from the Port Jefferson beach instead of place cards, hand-stamping each of them with funky animal stamps to indicate the table and writing out each person’s name on the stones. Because of their commitment to all animals, Dana and Dave made a donation in their guests’ names to the Wake County, North Carolina, Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in their new North Carolina hometown. Each guest took home a wheatgrass planting tagged with a note to let them know about the donation. The couple also wanted to highlight the best of Long Island in their wedding, incorporating local wildflowers and herbs into their décor and choosing local foods, including a ragout of local vegetables served over polenta, Long Island duck breast, and fresh local berries for their wedding menu. As Dana and Dave took to the dance floor with practiced ease — they’d taken lessons together, a tenth anniversary gift from Dana to her soon-to-be husband — the band played “Homeward Bound,” a perfect reflection of the couple’s long-term commitment through geographical challenges and their joy in coming together at last. Calhoun, who joined the celebration in her flower-bedecked collar and took a turn around the dance floor with Dana during the reception, surely approved.

When Alexandra Nee first met Joseph Donaldson, she wasn’t interested in knowing much more than how he took his coffee. Joe was a frequent diner at the breakfast café where Alexandra worked for a few summers, and though he seemed like a perfectly nice guy, it wasn’t until years later, when Alexandra’s uncle reintroduced them, that Alexandra and Joe really connected. They had a dinner date, and then another dinner date, and before they knew it, they were in a serious relationship. Apparently, the timing was finally right, and from that moment on, they were a couple. Joe isn’t the world’s greatest secret keeper, according to Alexandra, so on the night he asked Alexandra to get their dinner laid out while he ran to the car, she was instantly suspicious. Sure enough, as she started to pull out the containers from the takeout order Joe had picked up on the way home from work, Alexandra spotted a ring box among the containers. As she opened it, she turned around. Joe was down on one knee in front of her. Alexandra beamed as he asked her to be his wife. Since Alexandra and Joe are both Long Island natives, they knew they wanted to have the wedding near their home. They were also determined not to have a traditional catering hall–style wedding — they wanted something different and creative. Inspired by Long Island’s famous wine region, they discovered the ideal wedding location at the Martha Clara Vineyards, which had a sprawling barn perfect for celebrating with 190 dancing and dining guests.

Instead of a cake, the couple decided to serve five tiers of 350 cupcakes, each tier with a different flavor.

Alexandra was enrolled in an intensive nursing program when Joe proposed, so she quickly sought the help of a wedding planner who could help her juggle the logistics of her dream wedding without having to get bogged down in the details. She and her wedding planner, Laura Mastriano, talked frequently about Alexandra’s ideas, and then Laura would work through the details to bring Alexandra’s vision to life. It was an ideal collaboration, and Alexandra says her vendors were instrumental in helping her have the wedding she wanted almost completely hassle-free. “Every vendor we worked with was just outstanding, from the planning process right down to completion,” says Alexandra. Alexandra and Joe made sure to fill their wedding with plenty of personal touches. Alexandra wore her great-grandmother’s pearl earrings, the same ones her mother and grandmother had worn at

Joe opted for spats instead of traditional shoes with his tuxedo, and Alexandra fell in love with a spectacularly out-of-the-ordinary gown, which she wore to walk down the aisle to the song “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” Alexandra’s veil was a labor of love, made just for her by her mother and her grandmother, and Alexandra and Joe asked several family members to give special readings during the ceremony. Instead of a cake, the couple decided to serve five tiers of 350 cupcakes, each tier with a different flavor to encourage guests to go back for seconds. They also encouraged their guests to pop into the photo booth and paste their pictures — along with their best wedding advice for the newly married couple — into a wedding scrapbook. The weather grumbled a little as the time for the ceremony drew near, and when the blue skies darkened ominously, the couple decided to move to the cocktail tent instead of risking a downpour in the vineyard, where the wedding was intended to take place. Fortunately, their wedding planner had a solid "plan B" in place for inclement weather, and the ceremony was just as perfect as Alexandra and Joe had envisioned. As Alexandra and Joe celebrated with their guests in the enormous old barn on the property, it was hard to believe that only a few years before, they’d been strangers in a little breakfast café.
