{from the publisher} In the wedding industry,

every job is so important — and so hands-on — that it requires a true love for the trade. Being “hands-on” is one thing I know about. Every item in this issue — in every issue! — has my fingerprints all over it.

I’ve scoured flea markets, rummaged through garage sales, and pounded city streets searching for the perfect prop to make a photo shoot extraordinary and, more important, fire the imagination of a bride-to-be. I’ve handcrafted items for tabletops and gowns, and don’t get me started on the art of glittering! But even after countless hours choosing photos and laying out pages — I still love my job. And when my passion shows through, these pages really come to life. I hope in reading this issue, you’ll feel the same enthusiasm to make your wedding unique. Feeling overwhelmed? Translate that energy into organization and break down the flurry of details into manageable bites. What defines you as a couple? Are you both foodies? Find caterers who’ll work with you to create personalized cuisine. Wine connoisseurs? Ensure your taste in vino is a priority in the budget. Passion and planning together make a fabulous combination.

Let your past inspire you — anything is fair game! My own childhood memories of eating Creamsicles in the hot summer sun became our sorbet color palette (page 109). And who didn’t love county fairs as a kid? Our gorgeous gown shoot, Fair Weather (page 120), is sure to bring you back to your youth. In today’s economy, budgeting is essential. Wedding professionals everywhere will happily work with you to provide the best experience possible at any price point. Or, get crafty with a little DIY (see pages 85-119). Not sure where to start? This issue is filled with ideas! Go ahead: Rip out pages, make an inspiration board, show vendors what you’re excited about. With smart planning, you can put on a great show that’s totally you. Let us help you get inspired and get passionate!

When Newton Wells ENROLLED IN the Environmental science and Natural resource program at Johnson State College, he didn’t expect that 14 years later he’d be making music at Vermont weddings. lauren Stagnitti

When a gig at a local radio station brought him a few weekend DJ opportunities, word-of-mouth referrals made Newton Wells a Vermont wedding must-have. He hired friends to help him manage the burgeoning demand, and by the time he graduated from Johnson State, Wells had a booming small business on his hands. A s t h e ow ne r of St owe-b a s e d Pe a k Entertainment, Wells' weekends are usually devoted to spinning tunes for wedding celebrations, but he stays busy during the week tackling the administrative duties of running a small business and keeping his music equipment in good repair.

Though Wells didn’t pursue a ca reer in environmental science, he put his green k now-how to work building an environmentally friendly headquarters for Peak Entertainment, complete with solar panels and built from renewable materials. The 2009 Vermont Wedding Affair was the perfect antidote for “expo-style” wedding show burnout, leaving brides-to-be pampered and prepared. The 2009 Vermont Wedding Affair at Shelbu r ne Fa r ms con nected enga ged couples with all the tools they could possibly need to create a dream Vermont wedding. From fete-worthy fare served up by the area’s many local caterers and exquisitely crafted cakes that tasted as good as they looked, to a runway show of the season’s best bridal couture, and over-the-top table settings, Vermont’s finest wedding professionals truly pulled out all the stops to demonstrate all the possibilities a wedding in this beautiful and picturesque state offers. For the more sweet-toothed among the visitors, inspiration took on a delicious new meaning with a fun caramel apple bar — perfect for late summer and fall weddings — and a playful candy bar. Meanwhile, local spas did their part as well, helping soothe pre-wedding stress with complimentary facials and massages. When couples left, their arms laden with treats, favors, information, and big smiles on their faces, there was no question that the event had been a rousing success.

Eryn Giroux and Steve Stetson lived just a few miles apart from one another in Dallas, but they didn’t meet until Eryn was visiting her family in Upstate New York and happened to find Steve’s ad on an online dating site. Intrigued by what she saw, she sent Steve a note, and the two made plans to meet for dinner as soon as Eryn returned to Dallas. They clicked almost instantly and started dating seriously just a few weeks after that first dinner. Eryn and Steve's relationship was so easy and comfortable that Steve planned a laid back, Christmas Eve proposal at Eryn's parents' house. “My mom didn’t believe us at first — she thought we were joking,” says Eryn. “When we finally convinced her we were serious, she started calling everyone to share the news.” Eryn had grown up in a little town called Chazy, New York, located just across the lake from Burlington, and she’d always loved the area, where many of her closest friends and family still lived. When she and Steve discovered The Amee Farm, an organic working farm in Pittsfield, they knew they’d found a location that suited the natural feeling they wanted their wedding celebration to have. The farm, tucked into the dazzling green fields you only seem to find in Vermont, boasts an unbeatable combination of luxury and sustainability, mixing elegant antique finds with rustic craftsmanship for a style that really is the best of both worlds.

"Eryn's simple Kraft paper envelopes inspired raves from other bridesto-be when they were featured on StyleMePretty.com."

50 { Vt vows.com }

Eryn is a graphic designer, and naturally paid special attention to the wedding invitations and other printed materials for the ceremony, enjoying the chance to be her own client for a change. She included a charming bird motif across their wedding stationery, a whimsical touch that went perfectly with the quirky elegance she and Steve planned for their wedding. She sourced recycled paper products for the wedding’s print elements and tracked down rare vintage stamps on eBay to match her wedding design’s theme and color scheme. Her simple Kraft paper envelopes inspired raves from other brides-to-be when they were featured on StyleMePretty.com. Eryn and Steve wanted a rustic, organic-themed wedding that was comfortable and fun. They embraced the mix of rural elegance they found at The Amee Farm and built on it for their celebration. Eryn chose a natural green-and-brown color scheme, accented with hints of red, pink, and orange. The bridesmaids wore simple, grassgreen dresses by Amsale. Eryn’s dress, by Lian Carlo, spilled from a plain bodice into a pretty tumble of ruffles that were feminine

without being fussy. Eryn opted for tree seeds as wedding favors, in keeping with their ceremony’s eco-friendly theme. She designed the labels for the seeds herself and wrapped them in organic cotton ribbon for a clean, elegant presentation. The wedding itself was a warm, welcoming celebration that brought together Eryn and Steve’s far-flung family and friends for the day of merrymaking. The couple felt comfortable trusting their vendors to pull off the celebration they’d planned, so they were able to just relax and enjoy their special day. “It was really nice to feel so at ease the entire weekend,” says Eryn. And since it’s not really a farm unless there’s a little poultry, Eryn and Steve’s photographer suggested a photo session with the neighbor’s chickens. It seemed like an odd idea at the time, but the photos ended up being among Eryn and Steve’s favorites of the day. After all, they had their happy ending, and there was no question of anyone counting their chickens before they hatched.

Vermont has always held a special place in the hearts of Jenny Feldman and Mike LaRocque. They first met in Burlington over the Independence Day weekend in 2006. Their first kiss happened on Lake Champlain, with fireworks bursting in the sky above them. Jenny, a New Yorker who had grown up spending long ski weekends in Vermont, couldn’t imagine a more perfect place to get married, while Mike, having grown up in Swanton, was already well aware of the area’s many charms. When Jenny accepted Mike's proposal during a Champagne picnic at a state park off the Taconic Parkway in the summer of 2008, there was no question in either of their minds that the wedding celebration would take place in Vermont. “We knew we wanted a Vermont wedding because there is no state more beautiful,” says Jenny with heartfelt simplicity.

“I loved that we were able to have a celebration that was elegant but rustic and child-friendly at the same time,” says Jenny. 56 { Vt vows.com }

Jenny had always dreamed of having a traditional Vermont barn wedding that would combine equal parts rustic charm and elegance. She decided to act as her own wedding planner, meticulously overseeing all the details for the ceremony and reception. For her starting point, Jenny began with the décor, choosing a natural color scheme grounded with a neutral, gold-hued wheat shade and highlighted with rich reds drawn from ranunculus blossoms and misty blues pulled from French lavender and blue delphiniums. With the help of her talented florist, she filled wooden boxes with miniature crabapples and stalks of wheat and hung hundreds of milk-jug candles from the barn’s ceiling to give the entire setting a soft, warm glow. Instead of table numbers, Jenny bought seed packets from a nursery and named each table after a flower or vegetable. One extra-long center table ran down the middle of the barn, while smaller round tables were set up in the barn stalls. A monogram of the bride and groom’s initials was sewn with flowers onto a piece of burlap, which hung from a refreshment stand where warm cider was served out of a cast-iron cauldron. Doubling as both seating cards and favors, gift bottles of Vermont maple syrup with handwritten nametags were arranged on a long table. “It was magical to see how the decorations transformed everything,” Jenny says. The barn turned out exactly as Jenny had intended — a beautifully appointed space with plenty of country whimsy. During the intimate outdoor ceremony, guests perched comfortably on muslin-covered hay bales, and custom-printed ceremony programs and pashmina shawls were arranged in galvanized buckets.

Folk singer Marie Claire, accompanied by musician Brett Hughes, played Bob Dylan's “Forever Young” as the bride walked down the aisle. Though Jenny envisioned an elegant wedding, she also wanted her wedding celebration to be a fun experience for guests of all ages. Instead of a typical cake, they created a casual dessert bar. Later, a piñata filled with candies and playful chocolate liquor bottles dangled from an obliging beam, waiting to be broken open by intrepid guests, and the catering staff passed out miniature ice-cream cones. Mike’s nephew, the couple’s ring bearer, delighted Jenny and Mike with a special fiddle performance. The atmosphere was sophisticated while remaining comfortable and inviting. “I loved the fact that we were able to have a celebration that was elegant but relaxed and child-friendly at the same time,” says Jenny. “Our wedding managed to be a joy for both adults and kids.” Jenny credits her terrific vendors, including Spice of Life Catering and Blomma Flicka Flowers, with helping make her dream wedding a reality and encourages other brides not to be afraid to seem like a micromanager when it comes to having the wedding they’ve always dreamed of. “Your vendors will appreciate how specific you are about what you want, and there will be no unwanted surprises on the big day,” she says.

There’s probably nothing more magical than watching the sky clear above your wedding reception after an unexpected rainstorm, to be replaced by a perfect rainbow — unless it’s seeing two perfect rainbows arch across the sky like a magical benediction. For Rebecca Babcock and Jimmy Bradley, that kind of serendipity has been a cornerstone of their relationship since their very first meeting, a blind date orchestrated by a mutual friend. Mid-conversation, the couple looked up and realized their matchmaking friend had discreetly vanished; they were so engrossed in their conversation that they hadn’t even noticed her departure. Later, a Christmas vacation spent alone together in Hawaii seemed at first like a terrible mistake to Rebecca, who had never spent the holidays away from her family in her entire life. However, when Jimmy asked her to marry him on a private beach on Christmas Eve, she realized that she was actually spending her first holiday with her new family. For Rebecca and Jimmy, everything always just seemed to fall perfectly into place. Rebecca had spent her childhood vacationing in Stowe and couldn’t imagine a more beautiful place to get married than on her parents’ picturesque farm in Morrisville, with its 116 acres of rolling fields and breathtaking mountain views. Initially, the wedding day weather seemed determined to rebel against her perfect plans, sending alarming sheets of rain, thunder, and lightning crashing down onto the celebration site as Rebecca and Jimmy’s vendors efficiently did their best to battle the elements and keep the party on track. “It could have been a huge, electrical, muddy, logistical nightmare,” says Rebecca. “But thanks to all the great people working with us, it was a fun challenge and not a disaster.”

“the band started playing “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as guests poured out of the tent for the once-in-a-lifetime view.”

62 { Vt vows.com }

It certainly didn’t hurt that the guests had delicious food to nosh on as they crowded, laughing, beneath the cocktail tents to wait out the rain. Jimmy, a James Beard Award–winning chef, had called on the teams from his two New York City restaurants, The Red Cat and The Harrison, to pull together a spectacular wedding feast featuring some of his restaurants’ greatest hits. As the guests nibbled on fried troutlings with green aioli and perfectly prepared lobster rolls and sipped the couple’s signature wedding drinks, the sky finally cleared revealing a beautiful rainbow, quickly followed by a second rainbow, arching over the first one. The band broke into the soft strains of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” as guests poured out of the tent

for the once-in-a-lifetime view. And just like that, the rainstorm was transformed from bane to blessing. Rebecca and Jimmy included several other memorable — if less dramatic — details in their festivities. Wedding photos of their closest friends and family members on their own special days were scattered around the reception site, including them all in the celebration. Guests ducked into the photo booth so they could slip playful pictures into the nearby guest book. The walls of the barn were decorated with guests’ response cards, which the couple had requested they fill out as creatively as they wanted. Parts of the meal were served familystyle, encouraging the attendees to chat and interact with each other. Guests scooped up M&M's in wedding colors from a candy bar and grinned delightedly when they recognized Rebecca and Jimmy's faces printed on the candy. In the end, dinner started almost an hour late, not because of the rain but because of the rainbows. “People were just mesmerized,” says Rebecca. “The rainbows didn’t want to dissipate, and no one wanted to stop looking at them.” As the party rolled into the evening, the bride and groom took a turn on the dance floor to Gene Raffery’s “Right Down the Line.” The rainbows finally faded into the twilight, but the real magic was just beginning.

When people talk about the path of life that brought them together, they usually don’t mean it quite as literally as Molly Bogan and JR Withers do. In fact it was the Appalachian Trail that brought these two together, though neither of them knew it at the time. Passionate long-distance hikers, both Molly and JR had chosen to hike that historic trail in 2002. As it happened, Molly was a couple of weeks ahead of JR and the two of them didn’t meet each other on that hike. They both made friends with a fellow hiker, whose speedy trail-blazing brought her into contact with both Molly and JR despite the distance between them. A few years later, in 2005, JR joined his new hiking friend for a cross-country drive, and she stopped in Boulder, Colorado, to meet up with her other new friend, Molly. The connection was instant for both of them, though Molly says JR was much better at playing it cool than she was, and the two of them began e-mailing each other. In 2006, Molly was visiting friends in Virginia, where JR was living, and they reconnected over drinks. It was only the second time they’d met in person, but they both knew it was something special. After that weekend, JR packed up his car and moved to Colorado. It was a little crazy. It was a risk. But in the end, it was a gamble that paid off for both. On the Saturday before her birthday, Molly woke up to a guitar serenade of one of her favorite songs — “First Day of My Life,” by Bright Eyes. JR had been secretly learning the song on his guitar, and when it ended, he dropped to one knee and asked Molly to marry him. Molly immediately said yes. Although neither Molly nor JR had ever lived in Vermont, they knew from the moment they got engaged that they wanted to get married there. They had hiked throughout the state, separately and together, and both had special memories of the area. “We have spent a lot of time in Vermont and feel like it’s our ‘soul home,’” says Molly, whose parents now live in Panton, Vermont. She and JR both love Shelburne Farms, with its beautiful combination of lake and mountains and its emphasis on environmental education, so pinning down their location was a cinch.

"Molly and JR incorporated their nicknames on one of their wedding favors — jars of ‘Lizard’ and ‘Easy’s’ Happy Trails mix." 68 { Vt vows.com }

Inevitably, Molly and JR’s shared passion for long-distance hiking figured prominently in their wedding plans, particularly the playful nicknames that hikers traditionally give each other. Molly and JR incorporated their own nicknames in their wedding favors — jars of

‘Lizard’ and ‘Easy’s’ Happy Trails mix — and used their trail friends’ nicknames for their place cards. “It was so fun to see the place cards with names such as ‘Wildflower’ and ‘Walk-It-Off’ and ‘Spoonful’ next to ‘Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Nolan,’” says Molly. Friends and family were also an important part of the celebration. Molly’s lucky sixpence had been slipped inside the shoes of each of her five closest college friends on their wedding days. A bevy of brightfaced children, including JR’s two nieces and Molly’s best friend’s three children, joined the wedding party. Molly surprised her sisters with mini chocolate mousse cups as one of the wedding desserts because as kids they’d considered those little chocolate bites to be the ultimate special-occasion treat. The Twister game set up for the children was quickly taken over by the adults, whose antics produced some of Molly and JR’s favorite photos from their wedding day. Best of all for Molly and JR was watching their college friends mingle with their trail buddies, work pals, and family members, laughing and talking as many of them met for the first time. “Seeing the people we love meet each other and make a connection was so amazing,” says Molly.

The countdown for New Year’s Eve had begun, and Kristin Marlow couldn’t imagine a more perfect way to start the New Year. Since she’d met Brad Schneider seven months before at a New York City restaurant, the two had been inseparable. Kristin had instantly liked Brad, whose love of family echoed her own, and Brad found it hard to resist a girl as interesting as Kristin, who had graduated — as he had — from the Harvard Business School. On this night, they were snuggled together in front of the fire at Brad’s mom’s house in Manchester, Vermont, waiting to ring in the New Year together for the first time. It seemed as though things couldn’t get any better — but they did, when Brad got down on one knee and asked Kristin to marry him. When she said yes, fireworks exploded in the background, as part of The Equinox Resort’s annual New Year’s fireworks display. With that kind of sentimental appeal going for it, Vermont was the hands-down choice for Kristin and Brad's wedding. They considered a few other locations, but kept coming back to the idea of a Vermont wedding. Because Brad’s mother lives in Vermont, the couple had spent a lot of time there and appreciated the area’s natural beauty. They loved the idea of celebrating their wedding at The Equinox Resort, which had played such a romantic role in their engagement story. Kristin fell in love with the resort’s gorgeous Pond Pavilion, a rustic, charming structure. She and Brad decided to have their wedding at Brad’s mother’s summer chapel and their reception at the Pond Pavilion.

“Kristin’s goal was to create an environment that was warm, comfortable, and beautiful for her guests to enjoy.”

74 { Vtvows.com }

Kristin and Brad wanted a truly intimate wedding with just their very closest friends and family present, and the guest list included 38 of their favorite people. The couple enlisted two of Brad's young relatives to make up the wedding party, one acting as ring bearer and the other serving as junior bridesmaid. Kristin wanted to turn the Pavilion into a romantic oasis for their reception celebration, and she found her vendors extremely helpful in translating her vision into a warm, welcoming reality. “Since the Pavilion is very rustic and masculine, I wanted to balance that with lots of feminine colors and flowers,” Kristin says. She started with a soothing turquoise and added pinks and peaches to warm up the palette. Antique chandeliers added warm light and charming elegance to the space, which came to life with spectacular flower arrangements. Her goal was to create an environment that was warm, comfortable, and beautiful for her guests to enjoy.

Kristin encourages other brides planning their weddings to have a clear sense of the kind of environment they want their guests to experience. Because the Pavilion is tucked in the woods, a long walk from the summer chapel where the wedding would be held, Kristin and Brad needed a solution that would allow all their guests to arrive together at the reception. They discovered a trolley service that would transport guests between the two locations, adding an element of fun and whimsy to their wedding celebration. For both Kristin and Brad, the parent dances at the reception were one of the highlights of the day — though in completely different ways. As Kristin and her father circled the dance floor to “Calling All Angels,” by Jane Siberry and k.d. lang, there wasn’t a guest with a dry eye. Then Brad and his mom took the floor, making everyone grin with their swingy interpretation of “String of Pearls” by Glenn Miller. As they took their leave, guests crowded around the departing couple with glowing sparklers echoing the magical fireworks of their proposal night and celebrating the beginning of Kristin and Brad's married life together.

It took Annie Morris and Ross Montgomery almost 20 years to fall in love. They liked each other from the beginning, when they became friends in junior high in their hometown of Middlebury, Vermont. Though they stayed good friends throughout college and young adulthood, they never dated. Even when they both ended up living in Boulder, Colorado for five years, they remained pals. Their regular dinners and days spent skiing made their friends raise questioning eyebrows. But it wasn’t until Annie moved back home to Vermont that they realized how they really felt about each other — and how all their lives had been spent bringing them together. “From the moment we started dating, we knew that this was it. We were going to spend the rest of our lives with each other, and there wasn’t any other way about it,” Annie says. “Being able to spend every day with your best friend is the greatest gift in the world.” Ross made their unspoken commitment official on a trip to Paris. Wandering around the Luxembourg Gardens, he tried to keep Annie from spotting the ring box he was carrying in his pocket as they purchased Champagne, baguettes, and macaroons for a picnic. As they sat among the gorgeous gardens, Ross dropped to one knee and asked Annie to marry him. Of course she said yes, and they spent the rest of their time in Paris cocooned in a state of blissful happiness. Since Annie and Ross are both from Middlebury, Vermont was the logical location for their wedding. They chose The Basin Harbor Club because Annie had family ties to the area and they loved the beauty the venue had to offer.

"Annie & her mom scoured flea markets & online shops to find different vintage Liberty of London fabrics to use in the bouquets & boutonnieres." 80 { Vt vows.com }

Being a textile designer, Annie was very interested in the design for the ceremony. “Needless to say, fabric played a big role in our wedding,” says Ross. Inspired by their trip to Paris, Annie chose a wedding palette of pale pink and dove gray, explaining to Ross, who followed her efforts with bemused fascination, that they’d use these colors throughout their wedding elements and celebration. Annie pored over linens for the tablecloths, trying to find the perfect striped fabric. She and her mohter also scoured flea markets and online shops to track down 21 distinctly different vintage Liberty of London fabrics to use in the bridesmaids’ bouquets and groomsmen’s boutonnieres. Annie was also passionate about choosing handmade items and relied on small shops and Etsy.com vendors for one-of-a-kind pieces.

For invitations and wedding stationery, Annie and Ross turned to Annie’s close friend — and one of her 13 bridesmaids — Katharine Navins. Katherine operates Tallow Studio and collaborated with the couple to create the perfect letterpress materials to complement Annie’s fabric choices. Of course, it wouldn’t be a wedding without a little last-minute madness. Annie and Ross managed to misplace their wedding rings on the day of the ceremony. “That’s a nice way of saying we flatout lost them,” says Annie, who had to walk down the aisle not knowing that her maid of honor had come to the rescue and tracked down the ring for Ross’s cousin, Sam, to carry in his handcrafted ring-bearer bowl. Any worries were forgotten, however, the instant Annie began to walk down the aisle, as her eyes locked with Ross’. It was the first time they had seen each other that day, and they were both overwhelmed by a sudden rush of emotion. “It is an emotion that no one can prepare you for, and it completely overwhelmed us both, plain and simple,” Annie says. As they celebrated their wedding with friends and family just miles from the place where they’d first met in an elementary school art class, Annie and Ross felt surrounded by pure happiness. 82 { Vt vows.com }

MINNER'S MOTTO: “find inspiration in a bouquet blooming with seaside charm ~ inspired by natural coral , exotic fish , sunny beaches , and endless shades of ocean blue ". Opposite: Painted in colors that echo the treasures accumulated on a day at the beach, this bouquet mixes lush brown orchids, buttery roses, pale peonies, and sun-bronzed dahlias with green hydrangea and gray-green succulents. The silk dupioni and grosgrain ribbons that wrap the loosely gathered stems echo the whisper-soft fall of waves against the shore, providing the perfect finish to this bouquet, designed by Flowers in Season. This Page: Capture the magical colors of the sea with a bouquet of driftwoodtinted orchids, misty green amaranthus, and hydrangeas that mimic the exact shade and shape of seafoam. Loosely gathered and tied in a sailor’s knot with a vintage grosgrain ribbon, it’s the kind of bouquet a naiad might leave on the shore for her secret love, Designed by Tina Hutchins Floral Design.
