T TOOK CARRIE VAN DRIEL MORE THAN FIVE YEARS TO FALL IN

love with Ian Wyatt. It took her less than a month to fall in love with Vermont.

Carrie and Ian had been friendly in a casual kind of way since being introduced by a mutual friend in Washington, D.C., after graduation, but it wasn’t until a weekend in New York five years later that they connected romantically.

It might have taken five years for the spark to ignite, but when it did, there was no stopping it. “We seemed to know from the start that we’d be together,” says Carrie, who met Ian’s parents just three weeks after their first date and introduced Ian to her own family a few months later. “We managed to fit nicely into each other’s lives.

We were meant to be.”

Life in Vermont was meant to be, too. On their very SPECI A first ski weekend in the state — and Carrie’s first Carrie L TOUCH: w trip to Vermont — they started looking at houses, m a d e b o re a n e c k l a c e casually at first, then more seriously. Within a y her m om , month, they’d found the spot. “We thought it Ian w o re c u f f li nk a n d would be a second home, a place we’d visit every s fr h i s g re a t u n cl e . o m so often,” Carrie said. Within a year, though, they had made their property in Vermont their full-time residence.

The Vermont property was such a special place that Ian thought it would be the perfect spot for a proposal. On the first night of their holiday vacation in Vermont, Ian built a fire in the woodstove, turned on some George Winston music, and poured each of them a glass of wine. Then he popped back downstairs to grab something from his bag — and returned, to Carrie’s delight, with a ring. He knelt and asked her to marry him. Carrie immediately said yes and didn’t stop smiling for days.

So it was no surprise that when it came time to plan their wedding, Carrie and Ian knew immediately that Vermont was the place. They were still living in Washington, D.C. then, but couldn’t imagine a more beautiful place than their Vermont home in autumn. “It seemed like a magical place to be married — we

could have the ceremony by the creek, watch the sunset from the hill, and host a reception in tents in the field, with all the beautiful fall color around us and the stars overhead,” says Carrie. Many of their guests hadn’t made it up to visit yet, and some had never been to Vermont at all, so the wedding also gave Carrie and Ian a chance to show off their home.

“THE FEELING OF LOVE AND EXCITEMENT FOR THE TWO OF US AS WE STARTED INTO THE JOURNEY OF MARRIAGE WAS JUST INCREDIBLE,” CARRIE SAYS. The wedding celebration was all about the things Carrie and Ian love best. Guests watched the ceremony from rustic bales of hay.

Bridesmaids, with sashes in Carrie’s favorite color, orange, led the way down the aisle. Carrie walked down the aisle to The Police’s

“Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic” for the ceremony. Two friends sang a special song, and other friends and family read poetry.

The party was a celebration of good food and wine, two of Ian and Carrie’s passions. Guests found their table settings attached to personalized wine corks at tables named for the couple’s favorite vineyards, and chose dinner from a cornucopia of options, including fresh lobster, salmon, duck, and beef. A band and a DJ meant that no one had an excuse to sit out the dancing; Carrie and Ian had practiced for their first dance to “The Rising” by Bruce Springsteen and were proud that they remembered the moves in all the excitement.

Late that night, with the fire pits burning and the stars blazing, Carrie and Ian reveled in the wonder of being surrounded by so much love. “The feeling of love and excitement for the two of us as we started into the journey of marriage was just incredible,” Carrie says.

OW WAS ANTHONY PANEBIANCO SUPPOSED TO RESIST?

When he stepped onto the elevator at the law firm in Boston where he worked as a real estate attorney and spotted a girl carrying a lifesize wooden deer head, he had to start a conversation with her. Nili Yavin, he discovered, worked as a litigation paralegal in another department.

After their first conversation, Nili invited Anthony to a party she was hosting for Canada Day in honor of her home country. (He didn’t come.) Anthony gave Nili a list of must-dos for her vacation to Martha’s Vineyard. (Nili ignored them all.) On their first date, they sat across from each other at the table sketching caricatures of one another on their paper napkins. (They both kept their drawings.) Clearly, they were meant to be together.

After dinner, as Anthony cleared the table, Nili decided to sneak a peek at the paintings in the bedroom, only to see that the three paintings on the back wall were in fact a message from Anthony asking her to marry him. Anthony sprinted from the kitchen and dropped to one knee when he heard the door open, but before he could get out a single word, Nili tackled him. Five minutes later, when they’d caught their breath, she said “Yes.” Though Nili and Anthony were sure they wanted to get married in New England — “There wasn’t a better place for us to share our love than where we fell in love,” says Nili — it took a little while to settle on Vermont. They looked at other places, but something kept pulling them back to Vermont. For one thing, Nili, who grew up in Calgary in western Canada, loved winter, and Vermont seemed to epitomize everything that was glorious about winter in New England. Then, too, the location was perfect, not only for Nili’s family in Canada and Anthony’s in upstate New York but also

for both planned and impromptu wedding-scouting expeditions.

On one trip, Anthony and Nili visited the Woodstock Inn in Woodstock, and though they eventually saw dozens of charming locations, Woodstock was the one that kept drawing them back.

ANTHONY SPRINTED FROM THE KITCHEN AND DROPPED TO ONE KNEE WHEN HE HEARD THE DOOR OPEN, BUT BEFORE HE COULD GET OUT A SINGLE WORD, NILI TACKLED HIM. Anthony and Nili wanted their wedding to be a rustic, yet elegant affair. They started with a wedding logo, a fir tree with their names, which they used on every part of the wedding they could, from the cake and invitations to the menu cards and CD wedding

favors to the stir sticks and tote bags each guest received. Instead of paper, they used sheets of walnut wood for their printed materials to emphasize the event’s rustic nature. The tree theme carried over to the reception and wedding décor as well: The reception tables were named for different trees, a birch tree stump held the wedding cake, and a moss aisle runner framed by tree branches and logs all echoed the wedding logo. Anthony and Nili even gave tree saplings to their guests as wedding favors. Many of the wedding favors were hand-made or put together by Anthony and Nili themselves.

The wedding day itself flew by, with a few special moments standing out. Nili loved the horse-drawn carriage ride she took with Anthony just after the ceremony, which gave them a few minutes together to reflect on the amazing thing they’d just experienced. And they both loved dancing through the night.

“We had to set an example for our guests,” says Nili with a smile.

HE SECOND TIME WAS THE CHARM FOR CAITLIN KENNEDY.

When the couple met at a friend’s birthday party in Boston, the attraction was instant and their love soon blossomed. But two years into their relationship, Caitlin moved to Burlington, Vermont, where she’d been accepted to medical school, and maintaining a long-distance relationship proved more difficult than either of them had anticipated. They went their separate ways, but neither could shake the thought of “the one that got away.” Then, almost two years later, a casual e-mail brought them back in touch, and they realized they were meant to be together just as Chris’s electrical engineering firm transferred him out west to San Diego.

“Although the distance was greater, somehow it seemed much less daunting,” says Caitlin. She and Chris shuttled back and forth between Vermont and California, racking up frequent-flier miles. By now, being together was a given.

But Chris insisted, and Caitlin came around. When they came to a spot with a stunning view of Lake Champlain, Chris stopped and fumbled in his pocket. Almost before Caitlin knew what was happening, Chris was on one knee and asked Caitlin to marry him. Teary-eyed, Caitlin said yes. They called both sets of parents, who had known about the plan since Chris’s last trip to Burlington, when he’d asked Caitlin’s parents’ permission to marry their daughter.

There was no question that they’d have the wedding in Vermont.

Caitlin had grown up in the state, and her parents still lived there — It was home. And while Chris was from Southern California, his time at Dartmouth in New Hampshire and years of visiting Caitlin had given him ample opportunity to fall in love with her home state. They celebrated the rehearsal dinner at Dartmouth College’s Hanover Inn, a sentimental choice for Chris, and decided

on an outdoor ceremony and reception at Murphy Farm at the Quechee Club, which had been a fixture of Caitlin’s childhood summers.

CAITLIN’S BOUQUET OF LILY OF THE VALLEY BLOOMS WAS EXACTLY WHAT SHE’D DREAMED OF AS A LITTLE GIRL. “We chose to have the ceremony and reception outside because one of the things we love most about Vermont is how beautiful it is,” says Caitlin. “It was ideal for us to exchange vows with the backdrop of rolling hills and the beautiful pond.”

Chris and Caitlin wanted to share the place they loved with friends and family who’d never gotten to experience it. So to get their guests excited about traveling to Vermont for their wedding, they sent out small tins of genuine Vermont maple syrup with handmade labels.

Caitlin knew the weather posed a threat, but despite a deluge of rain the day before, the special day dawned bright and clear.

For their wedding, Caitlin had chosen a restrained palette of soft whites and ivories to let the gorgeous greenery of the site take center stage. Caitlin’s bouquet of lily of the valley blooms was exactly what she’d dreamed of as a little girl. And the ceremony was full of special touches. Caitlin’s sister, a pastry chef, concocted a delectable four-tiered cake so delicious one guest went back for fifths. A cart of Vermont cheeses paired with California wines represented Caitlin and Chris’s past and future. Caitlin’s mom collected summer blueberries from their backyard to make jars of homemade jam for wedding favors. Chris’s family secretly arranged for a fireworks show at the end of the evening with allwhite fireworks to match the wedding décor, delighting the bride and groom.

“When I pictured my wedding, it was always a beautiful, sunny Vermont day, and that’s exactly what I got,” says Caitlin.

has been one surprise after another. The surprises started with their first meeting, when a mutual friend introduced them, and the two New York City residents realized that not only had they grown up on opposite coasts of Florida but also that Eric’s father had actually been one of Kerry’s mom’s graduate school professors.

The next surprise was how right they were for each other. “At first we seemed like opposites, but as the years went by, we realized we were the perfect match — and the perfect foils for each other,” says Kerry.

Eric even managed to make his proposal a surprise, in spite of the fact that he’d recently taken Kerry engagement-ring shopping. Just before a planned trip to California — where Kerry fully expected Eric to pop the question — Kerry came home from work to an apartment full of glowing candles and Eric down SPECI on one knee. So it’s no surprise that when it came time to plan their wedding, Kerry and Eric had plenty of surprises in store for their guests. The only thing that wasn’t a surprise was the location. Kerry and Eric are avid snowboarders who’d fallen in love with Stowe, Vermont, where Kerry’s aunt and uncle had a vacation house. At first Kerry imagined their wedding taking place outside, “but once the magic of a winter wedding got in my head, we were sold,” she says.

Kerry and Eric planned four days of fun for their 65 guests, who participated in everything from snowboarding to brunching. Eric’s parents surprised guests with horse-drawn sleighs at the welcome party to celebrate the more than 12 inches of fresh snow that had fallen, as if on command, for the wedding. As the weekend pressed on, the wedding guests had the opportunity to forge new friendships; by the time the ceremony rolled around, everyone felt like old friends.

The wedding, of course, was the highlight of the weekend’s celebrations. When Kerry and Eric saw each other for the first time that day, for pictures just before the ceremony, they couldn’t stop grinning. Kerry walked with her mom down the “aisle” — the Inn’s wraparound porch — with her best friend’s grandmother’s locket wrapped around her bouquet as Kerry’s “something borrowed.” (Her friend had tucked a photo of Kerry’s dad, who passed away when she was a child, in the locket, making it even more special.)

“FOR THEIR FIRST DANCE AS A MARRIED COUPLE, KERRY AND ERIC HONORED THEIR COMMITMENT TO SURPRISE BY DOWNING A SHOT OF TEQUILA BEFORE TAKING TO THE FLOOR. ” The surprises didn’t stop there. After the ceremony, guests popped onto the porch for specialty wedding shots served in actual ice

glasses and grabbed sweet treats from a candy bar. Kerry and her bridesmaids bundled up in fur stoles and matching boots for their photos. In honor of Kerry’s dad, Kerry, her mom, and her sister had a special “family dance” instead of the usual father-daughter number, and guests were touched as the trio took a turn on the floor to “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough.” For their first dance as a married couple, Kerry and Eric honored their commitment to surprise by downing a shot of tequila before taking to the floor to James Taylor’s romantic “Something in the Way She Moves.” The guests were so inspired that the dancing lasted through the entire reception — and, after the wedding party ended, moved to the Matterhorn, a local watering hole, where, true to form, Kerry and Eric’s guests scraped together $300 to keep the bar band playing an extra hour.

“If your wedding is authentic to you as a couple and you are enjoying yourselves, your guests will get caught up in your energy,” Kerry says.
