Devotion, whether it
be to country or sweetheart, is rooted in pure, unwavering love, and is ever—present in today's wedding industry. There is just something about the fall and winter that exudes a feeling of togetherness. Maybe it’s the holidays, maybe it’s the desire for warmth, but during this time, I just crave connection with those I love. It is during this time that my heart aches the most for all the brave men and women in our armed forces who are away from those that mean everything to them. Here at Vermont Vows, we are often lucky enough to witness not only fabulous nuptials but also true love — an illuminating, amazing, remarkable type of love that is impossible to miss in photos from a couple’s wedding day. For some couples, even when their lives have been disrupted by war and they live thousands of miles apart, or for those who have lost a loved one, this kind of love never fades. True love endures; it perseveres and carries on. My own grandfather, Clifford Austin, is a World War II veteran, and the inspiration for our vintage-chic “Always Faithful” gown shoot at Patriots Point in South Carolina (page 97). As a young man, he left his family to join the armed forces, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was held as a prisoner of war for many months. Our collection of stunning bridal couture is dedicated to his legacy, as well as the many men and women currently serving in the military, and others that have tragically lost their lives. It is my hope that this season, brides will remember what weddings are all about. Get back to basics by using vintage and antique elements throughout your celebration. We’ve included amazing DIY décor (page 177) that can add a truly personal element to any celebration, and our pick-your-palette ideas are sure to result in fun and fresh inspiration. Far from ever looking dated, photos from your vintage-inspired wedding will retain a timeless elegance that will be as everlasting as your devotion to one another. More important, remember what your wedding day is all about: a celebration of love. Spend a few moments this fall and winter just taking in the vibrant foliage, letting soft snowflakes kiss your cheeks, and keeping those you love close to your heart, no matter how far away they might be.

For Alice and Hunter, the idea of love at first sight was more than just a tired cliché or wishful thinking: it was real. The couple met in Colorado after Alice’s sophomore year at Middlebury College. She had driven to Colorado from Vermont with her best friend, and the two had plans to stay in Denver for the summer. During the crosscountry drive, Alice’s friend mentioned she had an old childhood friend, Hunter, and she had a feeling they would get along. It turned out she was right. The two met on Alice’s second night in Denver, and it was as if they were instantly in love. “We started dating a week or two after, and even though I lived in Vermont and Hunter in Colorado, we knew we were meant to be together,” says Alice. The couple dated long distance for two years while she finished school, and as soon as Alice graduated, she moved to Colorado to be with Hunter. It wasn’t long before they had purchased a house and adopted a cat, ecstatic to have finally been permanently reunited. Although the couple had discussed marriage fairly often, Alice admits that the proposal was a little unexpected. When she came home exhausted after a long day of work, Hunter surprised her with a romantic dinner set for two. After they had finished eating, Alice says, “He got down on one knee and asked me if I would love him forever.” Thrilled, she said yes before accepting his grandmother’s ring, honored to have a treasured family heirloom that perfectly symbolized their love.
“We wanted to make the day very personal, creating a ceremony that was A reflection of us and not simply the standard,” says Alice.

Though they lived full time in Colorado, Alice and Hunter knew right away they would be married in Vermont. “The rolling hills, winding dirt roads, colorful maple trees, and ever-changing views of Lake Champlain always make me feel right at home,” says Alice, who spent most of her childhood years in the Green Mountain State. Once they had decided on their destination, the two embarked on planning, ultimately envisioning an intimate day that showcased their personalities. “We wanted to make the day very personal, creating a ceremony that was a reflection of us and not simply the standard,” says Alice.

The day of their wedding, the sun shone brightly on the lake and surrounding mountains through the windows of the chapel. The bride walked down the aisle to a string rendition of “Maybe I’m Amazed” by Paul McCartney, one of her favorite songs. They began the ceremony by reciting Alice’s grandmother’s favorite prayer, the Shehecheyanu, which encourages offerings of thanks for new and unusual experiences — an appropriate sentiment for Alice and

Hunter’s remarkable love. Their mutual friend who had originally introduced the couple read a beautiful passage she had written on the meaning and promise of marriage. Alice and Hunter were then married under a chuppa that Alice’s parents had crafted using birch trees cut from her grandmother’s farm. Following the ceremony, guests arrived at the Crandall Farm, Alice’s parent's residence, ready to celebrate. In lieu of champagne, everyone was encouraged to drink homemade mead, or honey wine. It had been made by Alice’s uncle in honor of the old tradition of newlyweds drinking honey wine for the first month of marriage. Needless to say, guests were more than happy to oblige. Looking back, Alice can easily call to mind her favorite moment of the day. She and Hunter were newly married, on the way to their reception, and enjoying a quiet moment of solitude, “It was surreal, exhilarating, and wonderful.” Just as the Shehecheyanu suggests, it’s likely that Alice and Hunter will be offering thanks for many years to come. After all, it’s not every day that you find true love at first sight.

Not every blind date results in a love story, but Emily Robinson and Adam Davis are two of the lucky few. Set up by a mutual friend who had a feeling they would hit it off, Emily and Adam knew right away there was a connection. They had both recently moved to Vermont from Boston and had a lot in common. Following their successful first date, the couple saw each other often, and even traveled to two weddings together that summer. It was at a friend's wedding in Vermont that the couple shared their first “I love you.” On their way home from another wedding in Connecticut, Adam asked Emily to move in with him. Shortly after that they were living together, and later that year they jumped at the opportunity to purchase Adam’s grandmother’s home in South Burlington. Deliriously happy and deeply in love, the couple was well on their way to living happily ever after. Never very good at keeping secrets, Adam could barely contain himself once he had purchased Emily’s ring from a shop in Boston. Before he proposed, however, he wanted to speak with Emily’s father. “I called saying I had an important question regarding his daughter, and he probably already knew what it was about,” says Adam. Emily’s father, without missing a beat, jokingly replied, “Who is this?” The two shared a good laugh, and that night, Adam dropped by Emily’s parent's home and got the blessing he was hoping for.

“We had plans to spend that night together and have a nice dinner out,” says Emily. “But when I got home, I suggested we go boating with my brother instead.” Less than excited with the change in plans, Adam was unable to contain himself any longer. Dropping down to one knee, he asked Emily to be his wife. Always one to speak her mind, Emily immediately accepted with an enthusiastic, “Shut up! Are you kidding me?” and the couple spent the remainder of the evening celebrating with champagne and calling friends and family to share the good news. Since Emily works in the wedding industry with Cloud 9 Caterers, it was important for her wedding to be different from all the others she had been a part of. Her father owns a booth at the Champlain Valley Exposition, and many of Emily’s family members and friends had helped staff the booth for the annual fair over the years. Emily and Adam decided a vintage carnival theme would be not only unique, sophisticated, and fun, but also a great way to incorporate her family. With the help of her mother, Emily planned

an amazing outdoor celebration on the shores of Lake Champlain in Burlington. With tents set up in true carnival fashion, guests enjoyed fair-worthy foods like cotton candy, fried dough, and popcorn, as well as a photobooth, hand-rolled cigars, and even a dunking booth with a sign reading, “Soak This Bloke.” Cupcake and candy bar stations were also set up, satisfying even the most powerful sweet tooth. Immediately following the ceremony, Emily and Adam surprised their guests with an air stunt show over the lake, “It was amazing, and such a treat for our guests,” says Emily. The bride and groom got a surprise of their own when Emily’s dad, a former musician, jumped onstage with the band and sang a song dedicated to Emily and her mother, Judy. Although the sky had been threatening to rain all day, the clouds mercifully parted that evening, gracing everyone with a gorgeous sunset over the lake. As Emily and Adam enjoyed a private moment watching the sun sink over the Adirondacks, they both knew that their wedding day had been everything they could have ever imagined.

For Emily Blistein and Drew Palcsik, it is impossible to pinpoint the exact moment they fell in love. It was more a collection of moments: laughter shared over stories and songs, the exchange of love letters, and their similar sense of humor — her wit to his wry. As Emily explains, “I always say that we really fell in love on sidewalks and on beaches in very quiet moments.” It wasn’t the story of an epic romance, but something even better: true love, pure and simple. As in all great relationships, things sounded, tasted, and looked better when they were together. One Sunday in May, Emily and Drew were at home, enjoying the wonderful quiet of a sunny morning. As a light breeze blew through the open windows, Emily recalls how she felt it was the absolute perfect Vermont day — and about to get even better. “Drew came into the room and began what seemed like an innocuous conversation that became sweeter, and voilà!” Much like falling in love, their engagement was simple and effortless. It just felt right. Drew has two young sons from a previous marriage, and they were looking forward to an intimate wedding that celebrated their becoming a new family. The couple had briefly toyed with the idea of a beach wedding before ultimately deciding that a winter wedding in Vermont sounded too beautiful to pass up. As a Vermonter, Emily knew that winter weddings have their risks. “A friend said to me, ‘that sounds enchanting…or potentially treacherous,’” she says, but the couple was happy to settle on an indoor venue — The Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts — after watching seemingly endless rain showers all summer long.

As a child, Emily had always been encouraged to pursue art, and she loved DIY-style crafts and projects, so she was excited to get started with the planning. “Don’t get me wrong, loving Drew was the most important thing, but a wedding meant a fluttering of projects that I couldn’t wait to get started on.” She began by making their own save the dates, invitations, and ring pillows using antique lace from her grandmother’s wedding gown. She made small feathery pompoms for her niece to throw during the ceremony instead of flowers, and took the opportunity to peruse her favorite antique shops in search of vintage linens and glass bottles for the special day. Relying only on the tiny Christmas lights strung throughout The Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts and a smattering of candles, Emily and Drew created a warm and romantic atmosphere while

snow fell enchantingly outside on the evening of their wedding. With the help of her mother and a few friends, Emily set up dozens of vintage glass bottles, each holding a simple bouquet. She also displayed her own antique typewriter and utilized it as a guest book for guests to type notes to the newlyweds. Drawing inspiration from their shared love for Italy, the bride and groom served Italian-style food and chose an overall rustic tone to the event. The resulting décor was simple and elegant, with classic touches, and the feeling inside the gallery was all the couple could have hoped for. “I underestimated how wonderful it would be to be surrounded by friends and family and have a true moment of celebration with them all,” says Emily. In the midst of the festivities, Emily and Drew stole away to enjoy a private moment on Church Street. Standing outside, as the snow fell around them, remains Emily’s favorite moment from the wedding. “It was chilly and we were outside, but those moments of being warm beside him grounded me and left me with a sweet still-frame memory.” It was an uncomplicated moment, purely sweet and simple, just as love should be.

Though they do not live in the area, Heather Kelly and Patrick McCloskey’s love for snow makes them true Vermonters at heart. It was on the first day of winter, as snow was falling lightly outside her window, when Heather awoke to Patrick carefully placing a diamond ring on her finger, sweetly asking her to be his wife. She had been harboring a sneaking suspicion for weeks that Patrick was going to propose — he had already confessed to asking her father for his blessing. Maybe it was the snow, or the first day of her favorite season, but she suddenly knew she had never been more sure of anything. The two celebrated their engagement by enjoying a leisurely breakfast in bed before venturing outside to play in the snow amidst the swirling flakes, more in love than ever. Heather and Patrick met in 2001, while Heather was engrossed in her studies at the Culinary Institute of America. Introduced by mutual friends, both Heather and Patrick shared many of the same interests. They had the same love for food, the outdoors, entertaining, and spending time with their families. However, the timing was off. Both were involved in relationships at the time, but they remained good friends and really got to know each other over the course of five years before officially becoming a couple. When they finally got together, they knew that they had found something real. “Being with him was even better than I had dreamed of,” says Heather. “There was no doubt that this was the man I was going to marry.”

Heather and Patrick’s shared love for winter meant that choosing their wedding date would be easy. They embarked on planning for their December wedding, envisioning a wintery and semi-traditional celebration that incorporated lots of personal elements and expressed their personalities. Heather lived in Woodstock, Vermont, while attending culinary school, and both she and Patrick were in love with the area — especially during the colder winter months. They agreed they wanted their families to enjoy a destination weekend away from their lives in New York. After looking at several local venues, the two were blown away by the spectacular mountain and pond views, comfort, and privacy of the luxury chalet homes at The Mountain Top Inn & Resort and immediately knew it was the perfect place for their big day. The couple’s winter wedding plans went as usual until the night of their rehearsal dinner, when many of the guests were caught

in a brief white-out snow storm while traveling. With so much of their history stemming from the winter season, it seemed only natural that something like that would arise so close to the wedding. Despite the storm, all the guests arrived safely, excited to see the wonderful weekend Heather and Patrick had planned. Both the bride and groom are from Irish Catholic families and agreed it was important to have a traditional Catholic ceremony at Christ the King Parish in Rutland. To show their shared Irish heritage, Heather’s two young nephews wore traditional kilts to the ceremony, and Heather also placed Patrick’s grandmother’s beautiful antique brooch on her bouquet. In celebration of both the upcoming holidays and the winter season, the bride walked down the aisle to a quiet rendition of “Silent Night.” “Seeing Patrick waiting for me at the altar was my favorite moment of the day,” she says. The couple opted not to have a bridal party, choosing instead to invite some family members to stand with them at the altar as they said their vows. Surrounded by their treasured loved ones as they promised their “I do’s,” the couple knew they could not have asked for a more perfect and intimate winter wedding celebration.

It was just two days before Christmas when Julia came home one evening to find a cozy fire crackling away in the fireplace, a wrapped present set out on the coffee table, and her boyfriend Spiro waiting patiently, eager for her to open her Christmas present a little early. Thinking that it was a bit strange to be opening gifts on December 23rd, Julia peeled away the wrapping paper to find a beautiful leather journal and planner. Inside the front cover, Spiro had written: Julia, I love you and want to spend my life laughing and crying with you, will you marry me? P.S. We can use this planner to plan our perfect wedding, or just elope? Hardly able to believe what was happening, Julia looked up to find Spiro holding a ring. “He had to ask me to answer,” she says. “I think I was just stunned, but then I said yes!” The couple celebrated with champagne before meeting some friends for dinner, eager to share the exciting news. Julia and Spiro Koulouris met five years before through a mutual friend at an Irish pub that Spiro manages in Hartford, Connecticut. They liked each other right away — Spiro even surprised Julia with a trip to Greece just a few months into the relationship. Both felt they had found the person they would spend the rest of their lives with — the couple had purchased a home together and adopted two dogs over the course of a few years. They had truly become best friends.

Julia and Spiro live in Connecticut, but knew Vermont was the perfect place for their wedding celebration when they discovered the Honora Winery and Vineyard while visiting Julia’s mother. The winery reminded them of California’s wine country and was the ideal place to incorporate their shared love for good food and wine. The location was great, too, because lots of out-of-town guests were planning on staying at nearby Mount Snow for the weekend. “We wanted a weekend of family and fun and celebration — not just a single day,” says Julia. Much of Julia and Spiro’s wedding planning just seemed to fall into place. They drew inspiration from Julia’s engagement ring, designed by Alex Sepkis, in choosing their color palette. Spiro had originally chosen the ring because it reminded him of a Klimt painting — a wonderfully intricate blend of green, gold, and amber. The colors were simple and classic while remaining vibrant — the perfect combination for their wedding day and the beginning of the fall season. Though they originally wanted to have their ceremony in a Greek church, the couple instead decided to have Julia’s stepfather perform the

ceremony, which had a lot of meaning to Julia and Spiro. “He talked about how a good marriage is like making good wine, starting with selecting the right grapes,” says Julia. Spiro’s father then read a Greek prayer. More than anything, they wanted their wedding to be a celebration with all of their family and friends — and that is exactly what they ended up getting. Guests danced and laughed as they enjoyed wonderful food and wine — and Julia and Spiro couldn’t have asked for a better outcome. Although the weather was less than cooperative, the bride and groom were happily surprised that evening when the heavy rain stopped unexpectedly. Standing together on the back patio, they enjoyed a quiet moment as husband and wife. “There was this amazing mist and fog. It was magical,” says Julia. Before they knew it, the evening was winding down. As the couple surveyed the beautiful winery, looking forward to their honeymoon in California’s wine country, they knew Julia’s stepfather had been right. Sometimes it does start with choosing just the right grapes.

As a little girl growing up in Marco Island, Florida, Mikilena Greusel dreamed of a fall wedding. Unfortunately, the vibrant foliage she desperately wanted was nowhere to be found, replaced only with green palm leaves. It wasn’t until she met Matthew Hall and traveled to Vermont that she found her East Coast paradise. Mikilena and Matthew met on their very first day at Davidson College in North Carolina. “I had been playing a Simon and Garfunkel CD, and I heard the same exact part of the same song playing down the hall,” says Mikilena. Thinking it was a weird coincidence, she went to investigate, and found Matthew. Their shared taste in music seemed like fate, and they began dating soon after. During the course of their relationship, Mikilena and Matthew traveled to Vermont many times to visit his friends and family, often staying at the Four Chimneys Inn in Bennington. “We spent many winter nights walking in the snow and falling more deeply in love,” says Mikilena. The couple was together all through college, and lived with each other for two years in New York after graduation, before both enrolling at the University of Florida. As they traveled south to their new home in Gainesville, Mikilena and Matthew decided to stop at Davidson College for a visit. “At Davidson there is a tradition, or a superstition, that if you kiss your boyfriend or girlfriend while standing near the old well, you will be bound to get married someday,” says Mikilena. She told Matthew they might as well kiss there for good luck, never expecting him to drop to one knee in front of the well and propose. “It was a very magical moment, preceded by years of engagement traditions at the school. It could not have been more perfect!” she says.

Both Mikilena and Matthew knew that Vermont was the perfect place for them to be married, despite the fact that most of their guests had to travel to attend the celebration. Luckily, the Vermont countryside was so beautiful that autumn, no one seemed to mind. They spent several days in Vermont preceding the ceremony, and on each day Matthew sent his bride-to-be a bouquet of flowers. “The first bouquet was just like the one he gave me the first week we were dating, and all of the others were beautiful, and the gesture and sentiment behind each were very touching,” she says. The couple planned to have their ceremony at Matthew’s church in Bennington, with a reception to follow at Hildene in Manchester. At the ceremony, breathtaking floral garlands were wrapped around the staircases, and candles glowed

softly from the windowsills. The couple honored their respective late loved ones by setting aside a pew in the church and placing a bouquet of flowers on the seat. Instead of reading their own vows at the altar, the couple read them to each other the night before, preferring to share the intimate moment together, and read traditional vows at the actual ceremony. Their reception took place on the back terrace of the Hildene estate, overlooking the vibrant fall foliage of the valley below. They had settled on a color palette of rich olive greens, cream, and browns. “We didn’t want to compete with the beautiful autumn colors,” says Mikilena. “The olive green matched perfectly with the array of fall colors so charitably provided by the natural shades of the season.” Though the newlyweds reside in Florida, both have fond memories of their special wedding weekend in Vermont and make sure to schedule frequent visits to share with Matthew’s family. “It’s nice to still visit and have ties to the place where we made our vows,” says Mikilena.

When Tonra Walsh tells husband Sean Riehl, “You had me at ‘hot chocolate,’” she isn’t kidding. One chilly Tuesday evening in February 2005, Tonra went with coworkers to Nectar’s, a bar in downtown Burlington with great live music. She ordered a hot chocolate to combat the cold, and manager Sean was happy to oblige. When her pint glass of hot chocolate topped with whipped cream arrived and Sean insisted it was on the house, sparks flew, and their fate was sealed. Two blissful years later, the couple went for a walk together with their beloved dog, Nalia, and Sean knew he wanted to ask Tonra to be his wife. “I didn’t have an extravagant plan, but I knew I wanted to propose in a way consistent with our daily lives and to have Nalia, the only other love of my life, present,” says Sean. It was a cold December day, and as the couple walked, it began to snow. Sean took that as the only sign he needed. They were passing over a small bridge, and Tonra had stopped to peer at the creek below. “I dropped to one knee behind her and opened the box and said with her back turned, “Tonra.” She turned. “Tonra Lee Walsh, will you marry me?” Tonra accepted immediately, and the couple continued on their walk, shedding tears of joy along the way.

Sean had lived in Vermont since he was a teenager and Tonra had vacationed here several times. They both now live here full time, and have grown very fond of the area. Needless to say, neither of them could think of a better place to have their wedding. “Vermont is such a beautiful, serene place to live, we wanted to share the splendor of fall with our friends and families from near and far,” says Tonra. They chose the Grand Isle Lake House for its beauty as well as its willingness to accommodate their dog Nalia’s involvement — they had her walk down the aisle during the ceremony and attend the reception. Inspired by their love for Vermont, the couple made welcome baskets for all of their out-of-town guests with items such as a Vermont magazine, Dan’s Chocolate Truffles, Cabot cheeses, Green Mountain Coffee, King Arthur’s pancake mix, and maple syrup made by Sean's brother-in-law in Newbury, Vermont. Unwilling to pass on a chance to enjoy some seasonal, local foods, the bride and groom had casual, station-style dining that included lots of local organic produce. They also planned some late-night comfort foods — grilled cheese sandwiches and soft pretzels — for guests to munch on as the night was winding down. On each table,

Tonra and Sean had laid custommade linens that had rows of branches printed on silk with different colored ribbons to represent the region’s fall foliage. To keep things personal and family oriented, the bride and groom set out framed photos of their parents' and grandparents’ wedding days, and Tonra chose to walk down the aisle with both of her parents, hoping to begin a special tradition in their family. Their wedding day was even better than they could have imagined. Originally, they had anticipated rain, and Sean’s sister had purchased white umbrellas for all the guests. However, instead of the pouring rain they expected, the couple was met with only a light drizzle, which stopped during their meal to reveal a breathtaking rainbow over Lake Champlain. “It was truly magical,” says Tonra. Later, their 9-year-old niece performed “Somewhere Over the Rainbow,” one of their favorite memories from the celebration. Although their wedding has come and gone, when Tonra and Sean look back at their special day, they like to think that for a lucky few, finding treasure at the end of the rainbow is more than just a myth.

“After hearing the couple's ideas, Randi was determined to give Vicki and Dan an elegant yet relaxed fall wedding that would make their guests feel right at home.” Inspired by her cousin’s wedding in California, Vicki drew inspiration from vineyards in Napa Valley while still embracing Vermont’s natural fall colors. After hearing the couple’s ideas, Randi was determined to give Vicki and Dan an elegant yet relaxed fall wedding that would make their guests feel right at home.
Vicki and Dan were blessed with good luck on their wedding day, though not in the way that many couples tend to hope for — the day brought sheets of relentless rain. Without a second thought, Randi and the fabulous staff of Stratton Mountain moved the event indoors to the lovely Mountain Club Great Room and got to work on making the couple’s vision come to life. Adding a bit of whimsy to the décor, Randi brought in a live tree with the couple’s initials adorably etched on the side to complement their tree-themed save the date cards. In keeping with her autumnal vision, the bride brought beautiful silk leaves marked with each guest’s name. Randi carefully fanned them out underneath the tree to evoke tousled autumn foliage. Inspired by the moss pomanders at her cousin’s wedding yet eager to make them unique, Vicki requested they be designed in deep shades of New England’s traditional fall colors — vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows. They added clear glass cylinders filled with pears, curly willow, and bittersweet to each table to offset the lowness of the pomanders. When the guests arrived, they were warmly welcomed by sweetly twinkling candles placed on the mantle and windowpanes, creating a romantic and elegant atmosphere that made everyone instantly forget about the rain. As for the wedding itself, Vicki and Dan were delighted with the results. Vicki left Randi a lengthy voicemail expressing her gratitude for helping create such a magical evening. As a seasoned wedding professional who will soon be celebrating her 300th wedding in the business, Randi admits that she never tires of these kinds of calls. “It really is why we do what we do, and why we love what we do so much.” When it comes to making couples’ dreams come true in the picturesque state of Vermont, what’s not to love? left to right: Autumn whimsy brings the décor to life; a homemade sign guides guests to the celebration.

Inspired by the legacy of her grandfather, Clifford Austin, a World War II veteran and Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge, Vermont Vows’ editor Krista Washburn sought a unique and fitting locale for this gown shoot. So we took to the skies, flying all the way to gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina, a gentle city rich with military history. The USS Yorktown is a real World War II aircraft carrier berthed at Patriots Point in nearby Mount Pleasant. Also on-site is an expansive museum which provided an extraordinary collection of historic ships and planes that saw action and conflicts from World War II to Desert Storm. These unique artifacts provided a fantastic backdrop for our vintage-inspired shoot and also served to remind us of the bittersweet sacrifice undertaken by brave men and women of years past. For all of our boys and girls in uniform, past and present, this is our tribute to you. Patriots Point is a naval and maritime museum in Charleston, South carolina.
