Devotion, whether it be to country or sweetheart, is rooted in pure, unwavering love, and is ever—present in today's wedding industry. There is just something about the fall and winter that exudes a feeling of togetherness. Maybe it’s the holidays, maybe it’s the desire for warmth, but during this time, I just crave connection with those I love. It is during this time that my heart aches the most for all the brave men and women in our armed forces who are away from those that mean everything to them. Here at WellWed Magazine, we are often lucky enough to witness not only fabulous nuptials but also true love — an illuminating, amazing, remarkable type of love that is impossible to miss in photos from a couple’s wedding day. For some couples, even when their lives have been disrupted by war and they live thousands of miles apart, or for those who have lost a loved one, this kind of love never fades. True love endures; it perseveres and carries on. My own grandfather, Clifford Austin, is a World War II veteran, and the inspiration for our vintage-chic “Always Faithful” gown shoot at Patriots Point in South Carolina (page 97). As a young man, he left his family to join the armed forces, fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and was held as a prisoner of war for many months. Our collection of stunning bridal couture is dedicated to his legacy, as well as the many men and women currently serving in the military, and others that have tragically lost their lives. It is my hope that this season, brides will remember what weddings are all about. Get back to basics by using vintage and antique elements throughout your celebration. We’ve included amazing DIY décor (page 167) that can add a truly personal element to any celebration, and our pick-your-palette ideas are sure to result in fun and fresh inspiration. Far from ever looking dated, photos from your vintage-inspired wedding will retain a timeless elegance that will be as everlasting as your devotion to one another. More important, remember what your wedding day is all about: a celebration of love. Spend a few moments this fall and winter just taking in the vibrant foliage, letting soft snowflakes kiss your cheeks, and keeping those you love close to your heart, no matter how far away they might be.

Annie Taylor and Luke Farrow’s relationship is reminiscent of all the great love stories. Annie, a Southern belle born and raised in Texas, spent all her summers in Nantucket since she was a young girl. Luke, a Northerner who had grown up in Concord, Massachusetts, also spent many summers on the island, working and enjoying the sun. During college, Annie spent the summer working for a local floral designer, happy to have escaped the humidity of the South. At the airport on her way home, she met Luke, who had a job there as a ramp agent. As often happens on the island, the last flight out was canceled due to fog, and Annie found herself invited to a party instead. She and Luke exchanged e-mail addresses but only spoke occasionally until they both returned to Nantucket the next summer. When Luke invited Annie to visit him in Boston over Labor Day, she knew there was something special there. “We sat in this old Italian restaurant, and he looked across the table at me and simply said, ‘For every reason you can give me to leave, I’ll give you one to stay.’” Needless to say, Annie never left.

For years, Luke would tease Annie, telling her that she would never marry him unless he had a huge diamond ring for her, to which Annie would reply, “I’d marry you if all you had to give me was a twist-tie.” Five years, one dog, four apartments, and one college graduation after they had taken their first Labor Day trip to Boston, the couple was vacationing in Philadelphia, with plans to move there. They had just finished dinner and were walking back to the hotel when Luke handed Annie a card expressing his love for her, with a postscript telling her to refer to the “awkwardly kneeling man at your feet.” Through a veil of tears, Annie looked down to see Luke on his knee, holding a gold twist-tie made into the shape of a ring, as well as a dazzling cushion-cut diamond ring. Annie couldn’t believe it. “It was in the city we had planned on for our future that our life truly began,” she says. Annie and Luke couldn’t imagine a better place to be married than Nantucket, the place that had brought them together. Since Annie had spent five summers working with one of the island’s floral designers, she had seen a lot of local weddings and knew she was prepared to plan her own. They also both knew how gorgeous the island was in September. Drawing inspiration from 1920s weddings at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel, Annie embraced pale dusky lavenders

As Annie walked down the aisle that day, she says that seeing Luke’s face was her favorite moment of the wedding. “Seeing him as the church door swung open is a memory that will warm me for years to come. I was marrying my best friend and the love of my life. It was five years in the making, but worth every second when we first met eyes.”

She complemented the unique colors by using her family’s heirloom silver as vessels for centerpieces. “Since the wedding was so far away from my childhood home, it was a way of bringing a little more South up North.” Each table was named after a different famous poet, with their best love poem placed in the center. They also chose to have traditional bride and groom’s cakes. Annie’s was southern red velvet, and Luke’s was in the shape of a whale — a tribute to the “Wally the Whale” cakes he had loved as a child. Annie wasn’t originally thrilled with his choice, but admits that both cakes were beautiful.

Before they even began dating, Christine Lambert and Marc Pentino regularly sailed off into the sunset together — literally. Both were on the board of the Downtown Sailing Center in Baltimore, Maryland, and spent many evenings sailing around Baltimore Harbor, organizing events and activities, and getting to know each other. “You learn a lot about a person sailing around an industrial harbor on a J-22 with no motor,” says Christine. One night, when the boat docked, Christine and Marc went to dinner, and they have been together ever since. After dating for five years and purchasing a house together, both knew that marriage was in their future, but they took their time getting engaged. Strolling the streets of downtown Nantucket while vacationing one summer, they saw a vintage Tiffany wedding band that Christine fell in love with. However, when Marc went back to get it the next day, he told Christine it had been sold. Disappointed, Christine and Marc continued to look at rings until they came across a vintage Edwardian old European cut diamond ring, which Marc immediately purchased, but he waited to propose. Knowing that Marc had the ring, Christine was anxious but tried to remain patient. One Saturday morning, Marc went out early to run some errands, but it wasn’t long before he called home. “Marc called around noon and asked me to come outside into the park in front of the house,” says Christine. “I thought it was odd because it was a little rainy, but I went anyway.” Marc motioned for Christine to sit down on a bench before kneeling in front of her and placing the long-awaited Edwardian ring on her finger, asking Christine to marry him. From his car, Marc lead a five-month-old poodle puppy over to Christine, and attached to his collar was the Tiffany wedding band. “He said that the two of them came as a pair, and I just said yes to the both of them,” says Christine. At long last, they were engaged.

There was no question that Christine and Marc would have their wedding on Nantucket. They had vacationed there for years and had always admired the island’s natural beauty and peaceful atmosphere. Christine settled on a blue and cranberry color palette for the celebration: “Blue is my favorite color, and cranberry is so fitting for Nantucket, especially in the fall.” Her florals were a wonderful blend of light blue and deep, vibrant cranberry hues, with some fresh berries for texture. Next to the place cards, Christine had a magnificent oldfashioned bird cage, intertwined with flowers and fruits, set against the backdrop of the gorgeous Nantucket marshes.

The ceremony and reception took place at the Sankaty Golf Club, a location the couple felt was both fun and relatively casual. Blessed with perfect crisp fall weather, the ceremony was held outdoors, with the Sankaty Lighthouse in the background. Per family tradition, Christine slipped a dime in her shoe that her grandmother had also worn at her wedding, and her father walked her down the aisle, something that she was afraid wouldn’t happen. “He had about two years of health issues that prevented him from walking for a time,” says Christine. For her, the walk was extra special.

Though Emilie DuPont grew up in Sun Valley, Idaho, over the years Cape Cod had easily assumed the role of her second home. Even at 7 years old, Emilie defiantly told her mother, “I’m going to get married in Cape Cod.” Little did she know that Chris Callahan, the little boy she spent every summer with from the age of 7 to 15, would grow up to be the man she married. Although Emilie and Chris were childhood friends, sneaking out of their respective homes after everyone was asleep to explore the deserted beaches, their busy schedules in high school and college caused them to lose touch. Chris attended Georgetown University before moving to New York City, while Emilie was involved with the film industry in Los Angeles. It wasn’t until Emilie was visiting the Cape with friends that she thought of her old friend Chris. They hadn’t spoken in years — but as soon as she tracked down his number and gave him a call, the sound of his voice made her feel as if she were coming home. Months later, while vacationing in Palm Beach, Florida, Chris proposed to Emilie while the couple was dining under a star-filled sky. “I was shocked. Every possible answer came out of my mouth, then I ended it with ‘Yes!’” says Emilie. Unbeknownst to her, Chris’ plan to propose under the night sky had almost been unexpectedly changed. Earlier that day, Emilie had opened a drawer in Chris’ childhood bedroom, unaware that it was where he had hidden her ring. “He told me later that he almost had a heart attack and thought he was going to have to ask me right then and there!” she says. Fortunately, the ring stayed hidden until that evening.

Emilie’s great grandmother had purchased a summer home in Osterville, Massachusetts in 1927, and the family has enjoyed it ever since. A few of her cousins had even been married on the property, inspiring her decision to have an East Coast wedding instead of marrying near her home in the West. The bride and groom read their vows in her grandmother’s garden, the same place they had shared their first kiss years before. The couple chose to have a “sand ceremony,” in which they combined grains of sand that Emilie had collected from beaches all over the world. “We each had canisters filled with sand, and we poured them into one as our minister talked about our lives blending together,” she says. Emilie had very much wanted to incorporate oysters into the day — she had so many fond memories of eating raw oysters while sitting with her father at the end of the dock. After the ceremony, the newlyweds stepped away from the excitement for a short harbor cruise, and when

Emilie and Chris had planned their wedding date to coincide with the occurrence of a full moon. Though they were worried about the weather at first — there had been hurricane warnings the week before — the wedding day dawned warm and clear, and guests danced under a stunningly beautiful full moon. Inspired by a recent trip to India, the couple chose bright, vibrant colors for the celebration in lieu of more traditional neutrals and pastels. After spending the evening dancing in the light of the moon before riding away from the ceremony together in a charming tug boat, Emilie and Chris couldn’t imagine a more perfect wedding than the one they had in the place where their love story began.

More than anything, Emilie and Chris agree that being able to spend the day with their closest family and friends was the best part of the celebration. Emilie’s grandmother had broken her neck the day before the wedding, and everyone was overjoyed that she was able to attend.

For Lil Province and Rick Anderson, marriage was something that came later in life. The couple had been together for nearly a decade and were in their 50's before they decided it was time to make it official. One winter day while on vacation in the Turks and Caicos islands, the couple spent the afternoon lounging and discussing life. Lil had recently lost a dear friend to illness, and the conversation revolved around how precious and short life is and how fast time goes by. Suddenly Rick turned to Lil, asking if she would marry him. “I was shocked and thought he was kidding, which did not sit well with me,” says Lil. Rick, his blue eyes wide, responded with, “Are you saying no?” And Lil, realizing he meant what he was saying, burst out with a joyous, “No, I’m not saying no — I’m saying yes!” The couple was ecstatic to began the next chapter of their life together as husband and wife. Since they lived on Martha’s Vineyard year round, Lil and Rick decided to hold their wedding on their property in the fall. Not only was it their favorite time of year, but friends and family were also excited to come to the island at such a beautiful time, without the bother of summer crowds. Lil’s parents had purchased a pondside home on Martha’s Vineyard in 1949, and Lil had spent every summer there as a child. Rick had lived there since 1973, having come to visit a friend in college and never leaving.
THEY CHOSE TO HAVE THEIR CEREMONY AT HOME, IN THE BEAUTIFUL BARN THAT RICK HAD RESTORED WITH HIS OWN HANDS.
Rick, a building preservationist, had built the horse barn on the couple’s property by using an old barn frame from 1790. The couple chose to have their ceremony right at home, in the beautiful barn that Rick had restored with his own hands. As each guest approached the barn, they were handed heather-blue Eryngium wrapped in ribbons in memory of Rick’s father and Lil’s mother and father. Lil had never had any children of her own, so it was important to her that her five godchildren play a big role in the ceremony. She had them all walk down the aisle preceding her, and had her sister and Rick’s grown daughter as her attendants. A close friend, Trip Barnes, performed the ceremony. “I know Rick wanted a very short and concise ceremony,” says Lil. “So I asked my five wonderful nieces and nephews to say a few quick words about the old married couple. They were limited to a minute each, and they were spectacular!” Lil’s 15-year-old beloved yellow Labrador, Perri, acted as the ring bearer, looking adorable in a floral wreath. “Everyone stood up and clapped when my godson walked her into the barn and down the

At the reception, guests grazed on many delicious appetizers, and Lil’s nephew sang a song with the band as a gift to the newly married couple. It was universally agreed that all the guests had a fantastic time. “It was my first time being married, so at the age of 55, all of my family and friends were thrilled,” says Lil. As a landscape designer, Lil embraced many different textures in the décor, such as metallics, lush grasses, various dark-green metallic feathers, pheasant feathers, Guinea hen feathers, ornamental seed pods, and very subtle hues. Her color palette was an elegant and neutral blend of cream and smoky oyster gray.

College sweethearts MaryHelen and Kurt Gustafson have always felt a special connection with the ocean. MaryHelen spent summers on the Cape as a child and later worked for a time as a lifeguard. Kurt grew up in Rhode Island and always held a fondness for the sea. After meeting in college and falling in love, MaryHelen and Kurt spent five years in a long-distance relationship while MaryHelen studied physical therapy in Boston and Kurt moved home to Rhode Island to work for the family business. Though they were apart often, the distance strengthened their relationship. Often, when Kurt visited MaryHelen, she was busy studying, but neither minded. Simply being together was enough. Kurt and his father enjoyed restoring old wooden boats together and had spent three years building one particular boat from nothing more than a hull skeleton. Excited for its maiden voyage, MaryHelen traveled to Kurt’s family’s home in the summer of 2008. Kurt was nervous all morning, and MaryHelen assumed it had to do with watching all of his hard work come to fruition. “Once the boat was running, Kurt and I took her for a ride and tied up to his parent's mooring so they could see the boat from the shore,” says MaryHelen. She had turned to wave to Kurt’s parents on the shore, having no idea that his nervousness had been about more than just the boat’s first voyage. When she turned back to him, he was down on one knee in the middle of the boat, holding his grandmother’s antique diamond ring and asking her to be his wife. “When I finally composed myself, said yes, and stood up to look for his parents, my mother was standing on the beach,” she says. After asking for her permission to propose, Kurt had arranged for her mother to be there, not wanting her to miss such a special moment.

With a classic and nautical-style wedding in mind, the couple made sure to include the infamous boat in the wedding, and Kurt’s father lent the bride and groom his 1960 Colony Park Wagon and 1964 AMC Rambler convertible, ensuring the wedding party traveled in style. Neither had any idea that at the end of the evening, Kurt’s father would give them the keys to the convertible as his gift to the bride and groom. MaryHelen chose a green, gold, and cream color palette, a classic and elegant combination that perfectly complemented their

Guests arrived at a gorgeous reception at the Hyannisport Club ready to celebrate. Each table was distinguished with a different nautical term for ship parts, and the place cards were anchor themed as well. Instead of champagne, the bride and groom offered guests a signature cocktail called the North End Kiss, a drink MaryHelen had discovered during her time in Boston. Guests toasted the bride and groom at the reception as the golden light of the Hyannis sunset shone through the windows. It was one of the few Saturdays that fall that hadn’t been burdened by rain, and MaryHelen and Kurt felt truly blessed — for more than just the weather!

nautical-style celebration. The intimate ceremony was held at Our Lady of Victory Parish, a church where MaryHelen’s mother worked. Much to her surprise, MaryHelen was unable to contain her joy as she read her vows to Kurt, bursting into tears at the altar. Recalling when they originally met during their very first week of college, she couldn’t help but remember that the journey to their wedding day had been an amazing one.

Tiffin Pastor probably never imagined that when she met her future husband, he would be wearing a Harry Potter costume, but sometimes love is funny like that. Tiffin met Mike Eisenberg on Halloween night, 2004. Mike was wearing a Harry Potter elf costume and Tiffin was dressed as a butterfly. Although they spent some time together that evening, it wasn’t until the following month that they bumped into each other at a mutual friend’s party and decided to begin dating. Before long, they were inseparable. Tiffin has always had strong ties to Martha’s Vineyard. Her grandparents built a house there in the 1970s, and she spent every summer there since her childhood. After meeting Tiffin, Mike began spending summers with her there, making it a special place for him as well. During the summer of 2008, Tiffin was just returning home from a trip she had taken with a friend to Thailand and Cambodia, looking forward to seeing her family and Mike, she immediately headed to Martha’s Vineyard for the summer. Her first night there, she and Mike decided to take a long walk along the shoreline and then settle in on the sand to watch the waves. As the couple sat on a towel on the beach, “Mike pulled a clamshell out of his pocket and asked me to open it. One half of the shell read ‘will you’ and the other half read ‘marry me?’” said Tiffin. She could hardly believe what was happening. Mike took out a beautiful ring he had designed himself, and Tiffin, crying, accepted. They excitedly headed home to share the news, and Tiffin was surprised to see Mike’s parents when they arrived back at the house. “He had flown his parents up to Martha's Vineyard to help celebrate our engagement,” she says.

Tiffin and Mike come from differing religious backgrounds, so it was important to them to make their wedding more about their union and their love. They knew there was no better place for them to be married than Martha’s Vineyard, and to further embrace their destination wedding, they decided to expand the one-day celebration into a weekend-long event. Guests arrived on Friday night for a bonfire on the beach. Aware of his bride’s fondness for fireworks, Mike surprised Tiffin with an impressive fireworks show. The next morning, everyone was invited to breakfast in the basement of the island’s Old Whaling Church, and the rehearsal dinner took place that evening. Tiffin and Mike’s Sunday afternoon wedding celebration was at the Captain Flanders Inn, one of their favorite spots on the island.

The reception was full of personal touches — a signature “Georgia Peach” cocktail for Tiffin, who had grown up in Atlanta, flip-flops in galvanized buckets for any guests needing dancing shoes, and an oyster bar. Tiffin and her father danced to James Taylor, music she had grown up listening to with him. Tiffin and Mike made sure to step away from the celebration for a moment during the evening, something that they both believe was a great decision. “It was just the two of us looking at the beautiful scenery and reflecting. Because they wanted a small country wedding with only their closest family and friends, the cozy venue was perfect. Tiffin and Mike wrote their own vows, and Tiffin included several of her favorite poems to be read by friends during the ceremony. A close friend of the couple, Bob Nye, performed the ceremony. There was a special connection because Bob and his wife, Whitney, had originally introduced the couple. “We chose Bob to marry us because he started something special and we wanted him to be the one to lead us into the next stage of our lives," says Mike.

specific plan from the start was unusual. Most brides have a general idea that tends to evolve throughout the planning process. With Bianca’s vision in mind, Julie set to work on providing the couple with the Tuscan-style wedding they had always imagined. In accordance with her Tuscan vision, Bianca wanted her guests to dine, dance, and mingle under a sky full of twinkling stars — without a tent. However, since the wedding was in early September, everyone ended up being in agreement that tents were in the best interest of the guests. They used two: one for dinner and one for dancing. Julie helped them create a warm and romantic atmosphere despite the tents by stringing dramatic disco balls and tiny twinkling lights across the ceiling of the dance floor. The resulting décor was quirky yet elegant — a perfect alternative to a starlit sky. “The disco balls were one of the most amazing things I have ever used for a wedding — so unique,” says Julie. In keeping with the Tuscan theme, Julie also strung hundreds of the tiny lights to one of the largest trees at the Lambert Cove Inn, using simple décor elements to light up the celebration. As the lovely fall day dimmed to twilight, the tree shone enchantingly. Guests were guided out of the reception by the glowing light. As the lively celebration came to a close and guests, family, and friends drifted away from the festive scene and made their way home under the twinkling stars, Julie knew she had played an important role in the couple’s wedding vision. The tents had done little to take away from the couple's hopes for a romantic and elegant reception. As challenging as it may have seemed, her careful planning, island knowledge, fresh ideas, and attention to detail had managed to bring a little piece of Tuscany to Martha’s Vineyard — now, that's amore. left to right: The beaming newlyweds pose for a photo amidst flowing floral garlands; Bianca and Clinton's bee themed invitations are complete with elegant lavender details.

Inspired by the legacy of her grandfather, Clifford Austin, a World War II veteran and Prisoner of War during the Battle of the Bulge, WellWed and Vermont Vows’ editor Krista Washburn sought a unique and fitting locale for this gown shoot. So we took to the skies, flying all the way to gorgeous Charleston, South Carolina, a gentle city rich with military history. The USS Yorktown is a real World War II aircraft carrier berthed at Patriots Point in nearby Mount Pleasant. Also on-site is an expansive museum which provided an extraordinary collection of historic ships and planes that saw action and conflicts from World War II to Desert Storm. These unique artifacts provided a fantastic backdrop for our vintage-inspired shoot and also served to remind us of the bittersweet sacrifice undertaken by brave men and women of years past. For all of our boys and girls in uniform, past and present, this is our tribute to you. Patriots Point is a naval and maritime museum in Charleston, South carolina.
