>> it’s a snap! “wediquette” expert anna post gives brides the key tools & advice they need to work with their wedding photographers to capture every special detail. number one

number four

LET’S MEET:

PRINT IT:

Start by viewing a variety of candidates’ work online. When you’ve narrowed the field, meet with prospective photographers in person. Look for personality qualities that inspire confidence and show an ability to organize and take charge, yet allow you to feel relaxed. Bring visual examples of what you like from magazines and the internet. Having a clear idea of what you like stylistically helps potential photographers understand your point of view, and ultimately makes your initial meeting much more productive.

Negotiate the inclusion of an album with your photographer, or have photos on a cd, and obtain copyright permission to create your own album after your wedding. Look for a service that provides high-quality printing and design, archival papers, and strong, sewn bindings. Don’t forget albums for parents and grandparents.

number TWO GETTING TO KNOW YOU:

it’s always wise to follow your instincts when choosing the photo style that is most appealing to you. at the end of the

day, the style you choose should reflect your unique personality and the tone of your wedding.

gives brides the tools to capture every magic moment.

An engagement shoot is a smart way to get to know your photographer. Use the photos for your wedding website, save-the-date cards, engagement album, or guest book. The shoot is also a chance to practice relaxing in front of the camera and to discover which types of photos are important to you. Have fun with the engagement session, and let your personality shine through.

number THREe INK THE DEAL:

Always have a written agreement which spells out—among other things—the name of the actual photographer, times, places, number of hours, types of photos, key shots, number of touch-ups, and copyright permissions. Having everything in writing will help to ensure you get the photos you want with no confusion. You will end up feeling much more relaxed on your special day, knowing that your agreement with your photographer is solidified in writing.

number five BE CONSIDERATE:

Your photographer is not a mind reader, so communicate clearly. Provide a list of key people you’d like photographed and assign someone who can point them out.

ready, set, smile SHOT LIST a few of our favorites: þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ þ

Alice + Ben

ALICE & BEN MET ON MARTHA’S VINEYARD, WHERE BOTH HAD A LONG HISTORY OF FAMILY FUN & FOND MEMORIES. WHEN IT CAME TIME TO CHOOSE A NUPTIAL LOCATION WITH PERSONAL CONNECTIONS, THE PICTURESQUE ISLAND WAS THE CLEAR CHOICE, the couple says.

before the ring.

Both students at Yale, and frequent visitors to Martha’s Vineyard during their childhoods and summer holidays, Alice and Ben seemed fated to inevitably meet and fall in love. As luck would have it, rising sophomore Alice was on a retreat on the Vineyard with her a cappella group at the same time that Ben— who would soon start his senior year—was visiting his family’s summer home with a group of his friends from school. The pair ended up connecting after Ben and his buddies saw a flyer advertising a concert being given by Alice’s group at the Tisbury town hall, and opted to attend. The enchanting combination of beautiful music, stunning scenery, and sweet summer air was just the ticket to kick off a great friendship, which later blossomed into true love several months after the pair reunited back at Yale. “Over the past ten years we have grown and changed alongside each other, and when Ben proposed, we both felt ready to make an official commitment to one another in front of our family and friends,” Alice says, reflecting on the couple’s long and happy history.

the proposal. After college, Alice and Ben were enjoying life in New York City. One evening, the pair had plans to see a play—or so Alice thought—but Ben had a different agenda. Just before they walked out the door, Ben casually inquired whether Alice wanted anything from the cardboard box he’d been organizing that day. “I peeked into the box and saw a gorgeous bouquet of red roses, and a bottle of champagne. I turned around to see that Ben had quickly gotten down on one knee,” Alice recalls. After her resounding “yes,” the couple headed to a hotel suite Ben had secretly booked, where they called their families with the joyful news. the design. Aiming for a simple, elegant design motif, Alice and Ben opted for a vibrant color palette of purple, magenta, and blue to complement the verdant natural scenery of Alice’s mother’s home. One of Alice’s favorite aspects of her wedding day was her whimsically chic paper goods, which she feels set the tone for the entire celebration. Aside from fabulous stationery, Alice and Ben completed their nuptials with sweet heirloom details, brilliant blooms, refreshing gazpacho—from Alice’s mother’s recipe—and precious parasols to shade guests from getting too much summer sun. At the end of the decidedly romantic evening, guests headed back to Edgartown with delicious morsels of Chilmark Chocolate in tow.

Marissa + Casey

The abundance of Nantucket’s natural beauty made the picturesque island perfect for Marissa & casey’s classically chic nuptial celebration—the inherent appeal of the special locale complemented the couple’s joyful love story.

before the ring.

During their freshman year at Cornell, Marissa Wilson and Casey Gibbons had the good fortune to be introduced by a mutual friend while serendipitously crossing a foot-bridge at the same moment. “A few hours later, I somehow got her to laugh at a few of my jokes. We’ve been laughing with each other ever since,” Casey says. Since that fateful first day, the couple has continued to build a strong, committed relationship. “After our freshman year, Casey transferred to Williams College for basketball, and I basically spent the next three years driving back and forth,” Marissa recalls. During their junior year of college, Marissa studied abroad in Rome, and the pair continued to build their relationship long-distance until they finally realized that they never wanted to be apart again. “While I was abroad, Casey, with the help of his friend Phil—who’s now a filmmaker and who also filmed our wedding—made a video for me about how much he missed me,” Marissa says. “It was pretty hilarious, and kind of like a bad ’90s music video, but it was the best gift I’ve ever received.”

the proposal. Eight years into his romance with Marissa, Casey knew that he would need to craft a very strategic proposal plan to surprise his astute girlfriend. First, he planned an ostensibly fancy date, and purposely canceled at the last minute. Knowing that Marissa’s thinly-concealed disappointment would provide the perfect cover, Casey woke at the crack of dawn the following morning, and replaced the everyday ring in Marissa’s jewelry dish with the engagement ring he’d chosen. Once Marissa realized the switch, Casey got down on one knee, and officially asked the magic question. Marissa’s answer was a resounding “yes,” and the couple jetted off to New York City to enjoy an extravagant evening.

the day & design. After an intimate and heartfelt ceremony, complete with a traditional church service and plenty of romantic moments, Marissa and Casey treated their guests to a true Nantucket wedding experience. Their wedding featured a multitude of vibrant, bright colors in a nod to the magic of the summer season, and boasted some unique elements, including a laidback steel drum band, playful photobooth, yummy raw bar, and a sparkler send-off at the end of the night. “The sparkler send-off was a perfect way to cap off the night, and get everyone together one last time,” Marissa says.
