STYLE GUIDE FOR THE JOINT PROJECTS OF ULB AND VUB
•standards:provides
In the last few years, the VUB and the ULB, under the initiative of their respective authorities, have intensified their collaborations. In 2010, these were formerly institutionalized with the creation of the Brussels University Alliance (BUA), a joint body that aims at coordinating common projects, and at taking new initiatives to further these collaborations. As a result, new joint teaching programmes and diplomas have been developed, joint research groups have been founded, ambitious common projects in infrastructure have been initiated, and joint events and community service are ever more often organized together.
PREFACE
appropriate tools to communicate and promote all types of projects and initiatives that would involve the two institutions. This common identity design
a single brand that capitalizes on both universities’ existing brand and prestige;
This increase in joint activities called for an integrated vision and communication. Both institutions are autonomous institutions with their own style. The challenge was therefore to preserve both identities while at the same time provide a common framework to make the collaborations more visible, systematic, and structured.
The Université libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) have common origins beginning in 1834 and are founded on the same principles of free inquiring and critical thinking. Since 1969, they split and developed separately to become major actors in the higher education landscape. Yet collaborations in various domains have always remained.
• builds a sense of shared identity, communication, and pride in our collaborations.
• prevents dilution of the universities’ identities;
• limits the effort and resources needed to communicate joint activities and offers a professional, standard solution to all actors;
• adds to each institution’s value while reinforcing the value of collaborations;
The graphic style guide’s ambition is to provide all actors within the two institutions with the

BRUSSELS UNIVERSITY ALLIANCE (BUA)
‘Brussels University Alliance’ or its abbreviation ‘BUA’ will be used in this style guide to refer to the structural cooperation between VUB and ULB, but will not itself be positioned as a separate brand. The cooperation will be represented by a logo that features both university logos (cfr. infra ‘general logo’).

Why a new shade of blue?
We prefer not to favour one of both universities, which is why we selected for BUA a type of blue in between the shades of ULB and VUB.

Freight Sans
As the signature typographies of the universities are difficult to combine, we opted for a font that displays features of both Meta (ULB) and Avant Garde (VUB). Hence, we selected the font Freight Sans Pro .

DOTTED LINE 04
• The dotted line must not be too thin, because it should remain recognizable as a dotted line.
• The dotted line is used on ALL of BUA’s communication materials.
• The dotted line is preferably white. However, if the background proves too light, black and the lighter blue from the BUA colour palette can also be used.

As partner of two global and trendsetting universities, you will enjoy visibility at and have access to all the facilities of the LIC where you can boost intrapreneurship, and experience the power of innovation. You will meet bright young minds and get rst access to our latest breakthroughs in cuttingedge research and technology. You will be part of a visionary team that sustainably shapes the digital revolution, and will have access to an extensive, international network of individuals, companies and policy-makers, allowing you to impact the society of tomorrow.
The ULB and VUB proudly present their ambitious project to set up an international knowledge hub in the capital of Europe. With a new, smart, and zero-energy Learning and Innovation Center (LIC), we want to introduce our students, professors, researchers, Alumni, corporate partners, and decision-makers to the ultimate scientific resources. By offering information and communication technologies of tomorrow, we actively engage in breaking barriers and building bridges.

To expose our students’ bright minds to the experience and know-how of our partners, project rooms and exhibition areas will be available for our partners to enrich education with elements from corporate strategy.
By combining their shared knowledge and including external know-how from partners, the ULB and VUB walk the talk to become a point of reference on the intersection of education, research, and corporate society.
To keep pace with our rapidly evolving world and the challenges that we are facing, believe crosscollaboration and transgenerational knowledge transfer are key! Within this open and inspiring biotope, we therefore invite all to look for and based on the heterogeneity of the collective expertise and know-how present.
To ensure the best outcome for all stakeholders, the LIC combines amazing infrastructure (ICT, connectivity, smart learning tools,…) and learning and collaboration facilities of the future, with highlyqualified staff Among others, the LIC will contain quiet and silent areas for individual reading and study, collaboration rooms, experience centers for small group activities and active learning classrooms to support knowledge build-up and exchange, and stimulate creativity and innovation. Moreover, the LIC will house the scientifi libraries of both the ULB and VUB, providing access to a vast collection of physical and electronic resources.

Beliris was the first partner to join the LIC-project. They will invest 21 million euro in the construction of the building, with planned opening in 2022. To ensure the best learning and innovation experience, the Belgian National Lottery has committed to become the second partner and will invest €450.000 The ULB and VUB are now inviting additional partners to invest in the LIC and participate in realizing the mission of this unique Center.
