head coach

tom shaw College Georgia Tech, 1991 (cum laude) Coach Shaw caddied for amateur Michael Thompson at the 2008 Masters. Thompson played golf under Shaw at Tulane before transferring to Alabama in 2006.

Tom Shaw enters his fourth year as the head coach of the Vanderbilt men’s golf team with momentum building. In his first three seasons, Shaw’s Commodores have won two team championships, four individual medals and advanced to postseason play twice. Shaw’s first Vanderbilt team finished fifth at the NCAA West Regional at Arizona State University’s Karsten Golf Course, leading many to consider the Commodores as one of the most improved teams in the nation. Seventeen-under after 36 holes, the Commodores shot a 21-under 267 -- the low round of the tournament -and advanced to the NCAA National Championships, where then-sophomore Jon Curran joined senior Luke List as AllAmericans. The Commodores earned their first tournament championship since 2003 when they won the 2008 Kauai Collegiate Cup in Lihue, Hawai’i. Two Commodores would earn individual medalist honors during the season, with sophomore Hudson Johnson taking first place at Kauai while Curran won the 2008 Seminole Intercollegiate. That success was repeated last year, as the Commodores won the 2009 Seminole Intercollegiate when Ryan Haselden eagled the 54th hole to claim medalist honors. Johnson also took his second win at the 2008 Hummingbird Intercollegiate. When he arrived in the Music City, Shaw implemented a winter training pro-

gram to better prepare his golfers for the rigorous spring schedule. That immediately produced a second-place finish at the opening event of the spring, which had the strongest field of the year outside of the NCAA Tournament. Shaw has opted to play a variety of lineups at tournaments, building depth by providing each member of his team the opportunity to gain tournament experience. That move has paid dividends as each season has progressed, leading to strong finishes each year. Shaw’s success at Vanderbilt has mirrored the outstanding results he saw as Tulane’s head coach from 2000-06, where he was the Conference USA and Southeast Region Coach of the Year in 2006. Shaw helped improve the Green Wave’s national ranking every year, but he probably received his greatest challenge when forced to guide the team through the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. He relocated the team to Southern Methodist University, which entailed enrolling his team in classes and securing practice and playing facilities for the semester. His background as a Georgia Tech student-athlete and experience at Tulane have led to a stronger emphasis on academic development.  His teams at Tulane consistently had a team GPA over 3.0 and the 2006-07 team at Vanderbilt achieved it’s first 3.0 GPA in several years. Shaw was an NCAA Academic All-

He joined the Nike Tour (now Nationwide Tour) in 1992 and would compete in three Nike Tour Championships, Shaw was regarded as one of the Tour’s hardest workers and best short-game specialists. Shaw keeps his own game sharp by playing numerous events throughout the year. This summer, he shot a 60 during the opening round of the Capital City Invitational in Nashville. Shaw left the Tour to become assistant coach at South Carolina in 1999 and in two years he handled a variety of duties including recruiting for the Top 10 program along with scheduling and academic and budget oversight. He was instrumental in the development of two Gamecock All-Americans, Eric Ecker and Kyle Thompson. His work at USC led to the head coaching position at Tulane. Tom and his wife, Sherri, have two children – Ryan (11) and Katie (7).

Fourth Season at Vanderbilt

ASSISTANT COACH

VANDERBILT MEN’S GOLF

JUSTIN EMIL Since joining the Commodore staff in the summer of 2006, Assistant Coach Justin Emil has played a key role in building the Vanderbilt men’s golf program. The Commodores have won a pair of team championships -- the 2009 Seminole Intercollegiate and the 2008 Kauai Collegiate Cup -- and boasted four individual medalists while earning postseason berths in both 2007 and 2009. Emil and Coach Shaw were busy from day one in Nashville. In their first season, the Commodores advanced to the prestigious 27-team field at the 2007 NCAA Championships. Both Luke List and Jon Curran would earn All-America recognition following the season. Emil strongly believes in the power of fitness, placing part of his focus with the team’s physical conditioning. He participates in most group workouts and pushes the team in every session. Vanderbilt’s conditioning has played a major factor in late-season surges over that past three years. On the course, Emil still keeps his game finely tuned. He competes throughout the off-season, including making the cut on his way to finishing 31st at the 2009 Tennesseee State Amateur . In May of 2009, Emil regained his amateur status after five years of professional golf.

He finished second in the Tennessee PGA Section Assistants Championship (74-67) in 2007, qualifying to play in the Taylor Made/adidas PGA Assistants Championship. Emil also has played a big role in the development of Vandy Golf Day, which has raised over $150,000 for the golf programs in four years. He also helped introduce the Mason Rudolph Award, a special honor for service to Vanderbilt golf which honors former PGA Tour star and Commodore Golf Coach Emeritus Mason Rudolph. A native of Gulfport, Miss., Emil came to Nashville after a stellar collegiate playing career at the University of Southern Mississippi, where he was a four-year letterwinner. He earned Conference USA Freshman of the Year honors in 2000, and was named secondteam All-Conference following his senior season in 2003. Emil qualified for the United State Amateur Championships in 2002 (Oakland Hills) and 2003 (Oakmont). Emil earned his bachelor’s degree in sports administration from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2002. He continued his education at Southern Miss, earning a master’s degree in sports management in 2004 while working with Golden Eagle golfers as a graduate assistant.

Mason rudolph Director of Golf, Emeritus

In an effort to bolster the Commodore golf program, Vanderbilt named Mason Rudolph its director of golf in the fall of 1997. In the summer of 2002 Rudolph’s title changed to director of golf, emeritus, but his impact on both the lives and the golf games of the Commodores remains the same. In his five seasons as Vanderbilt’s head coach, Rudolph enthusiastically charted the process of taking the Commodore men’s golf program to the next level. He taught his players how to improve their games and gave them a new appreciation for the game of golf. A veteran of 21 years on the PGA Tour, Rudolph has seen golf at its very best. He posted six victories on the PGA Tour. He also played for his country in the Ryder and Walker Cups, helping to capture these championships for the United States. He played in 15 Masters and 16 U.S. Open Championships. He won his first tournament in 1959, the Golden Gate Open, and was named PGA

Tour Rookie of the Year in 1960. In 1950, when he was just 16 years old, Rudolph became the youngest player ever to compete in the U.S. Open. That same year, he became the first 16-year-old ever to win the prestigious USGA National Junior Championship. His accomplishments as a junior player did not go unnoticed. In 1999, Rudolph was selected by Golf World magazine as one of the Top 10 Best Junior Boys of the 20th Century. For all of his accomplishments, Rudolph was elected as a charter inductee into the Tennessee Golf Hall of Fame. In 1995, he was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame. Rudolph is a native of nearby Clarksville, Tenn. He played his collegiate golf at Memphis State (now the University of Memphis) before being called into service in 1956. After serving in the military for several years, he returned home and started on the PGA Tour. He is married to the former Carol Griffin, who is a long-time and loyal Vanderbilt fan. Her father, V.H. Griffin, received his undergraduate and medical degrees from Vanderbilt. Mason and Carol have two sons —Mason, II, of Nashville, and Griff, of Memphis.

history The Vanderbilt men’s golf team has advanced to the NCAA Championships three times in the past seven seasons. In 2007, the Commodores placed fifth at the NCAA West Regional in Tempe, Ariz., to advance to the NCAA Championship in Williamsburg, Va. (at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club’s Gold Course), where Jon Curran finished in eighth place.

Then a sophomore, VU’s Hudson Johnson earned medalist honors at the 2008 Kauai Collegiate Cup after shooting a final round of nine-under 63. The score tied the Commodores’ 18-hole record and broke Wailua’s tournament course record (championship tees).

Jon Curran

All-Americans Brandt Snedeker was the first Commodore men’s golfer to earn All-America honors after being chosen as a second-team honoree by the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) in 2002. He would earn first-team recognition the following year. Luke List improved upon Snedeker’s successes, earning All-America honors in each of his four years as a Commodore. In 2007, both List and teammate Jon Curran (honorable mention) were lauded as All-Americans.

Vanderbilt’s Conner Short Game Practice Facility, opened in August 2004, gives the Commodore golf program a huge boost, allowing players to practice any short-game shot they can imagine. The beautiful two-acre facility, located adjacent to the driving range at Vanderbilt Legends Club, features five different bunkers and three greens – one for putting, with both bentgrass and Bermuda, one for chipping, and one with a 130-yard practice hole for practicing shots of various distances and lies.

Lew Conner holds two degrees from Vanderbilt and was a member of the varsity golf team from 19571960.   The Conner family includes many Vanderbilt alumni including Ashley Whitsitt Conner (BA, 1960), Holly Conner Sharp and Kevin Sharp (JD, 1993), Stephanie Barger Conner (BA 1990) and Lewis Forrest Conner (MBA, 1996).

Vanderbilt dedicated its new short game practice facility in honor of Cleo and Lewis Conner, Sr., during ceremonies at the Vanderbilt Legends Golf Club in August 2005. Cleo and Lewis Conner, Sr., are the late parents of Lew Conner, a prominent Nashville attorney who funded the facility’s lead gift.

Officials are in the planning stages of a brand new Vanderbilt Golf Team Training Center. The facility would include coaches’ offices, four hitting bays, conference room, lounge and locker facilities all on the grounds of the Vanderbilt Legends Club in Franklin.

The Golf Club of Tennessee is a Tom Fazio design course. Opened in 1991, it finished runner-up in the private division of Golf Digest’s 1992 list of best new courses. The course is a beautiful layout of holes designed through a wide valley along Brush Creek. Four holes are found along a scenic stretch atop a bluff. The golf course demands accurate, ling tee shots with large bent greens surrounded by strategically located bunkers. A thinkingperson’s course, the layout will require the use of every club in your bag from long, straight tee shots to short, medium and long iron shots. Brewer was named Tennessee’s Top

This year marks the 102nd year of golf at the Belle Meade Country Club. A tight, tree-lined driving course, Belle Meade requires long, medium and short iron shots as well as delicate wedge and chip shots to large, exceptionally kept bent greens. The greens are well trapped. The first Senior Amateur Tournament was held at Belle Meade in 1955. Belle Meade was also the site of the 1969 Southern Amateur Tournament won by Hubert Green. The 1984 Tennessee State Open also was held at Belle Meade. In June 2001, Belle Meade hosted the USGA Junior Girls Qualifier.

Little Course at Aspen Grove Completed in 1995, the nine-hole par-27 course that surrounds Golf House Tennessee was designed to give the beginner and scratch player an exciting golf experience. Created by Bob Cupp, renowned golf course architect and co-designer of its neighbor, the Legends Club of Tennessee, the layout requires players to hit a variety of shots. Youngsters learning the game get a chance to encounter many difficult golf situations on this course, while the better players will find the mixture of fast greens and a number of different hole placements a challenge. As the site for the Tennessee PGA Junior Golf Academy and other junior events, this course is one of the premier learning facilities for juniors in the country.

One of the most demanding courses in Middle Tennessee has become known during its 25 years of play for its fast and undulating greens and hilly terrain. In fact, the land originally was owned by Davy Crockett’s uncle in the 18th century, and the 10,000-squarefoot clubhouse totally preserves the original chestnut log two-room Crockett house with the large stone fireplaces. Nashville Golf & Athletic Club, which has played host to the 2004 and 2005 Tennessee State Open, has been named the mid-state’s most challenging course by Business Journal Weekly.

Built in 1986 with architect Gary Roger Baird, The General’s Retreat hosted the LPGA Sara Lee Classic from 1988 to 2000. Having been voted the “Best Golf Course in Nashville,” the General’s Retreat is a “must play” for Nashville residents.

The General’s Retreat: 6,775 yards, par 72

The President’s Reserve: 7,153 yards, par 72 The new President’s Reserve, designed by Denis Griffiths (designer of Atlanta’s Chateau Elan Resort Courses), trails through 300 acres of natural Tennessee wetlands and along the banks of the beautiful Cumberland River.
