Redshirt freshman Kate Goldin is coming off back-to-back knee surgeries but trained hard during the spring. Blessed with great speed, she will provide added support for an already deep backfield. Junior goalkeeper Rachel Bachtel returns after posting five shutouts last season to give her nine in her career. With two full seasons under her belt, her confidence has grown drastically and Vanderbilt coaches fully expect a well-defended net in 2009. “In order for Vanderbilt soccer to be successful, we have to have a great goalkeeper,” Woodard said. “We’ve invested a lot of time and energy and confidence in Rachel, and we expect her to step up this year. She possesses all the tools. She’s got a great athletic build, she’s a great shot stopper and she is a hard worker.”

Sophomore Emily Grant played in all but two games last year as a reserve midfielder and had three assists. Sophomore Lyndsey Wilcox, sister of recent graduate Amy Wilcox, played in 18 games and proved to be an impact player. Junior Kristine Chaklos started all 19 games as an outside back last season and demonstrated strong technique and athleticism. Redshirt sophomore Catherine Wearn returned from injury and scored a goal in her first Vanderbilt match, the game-winner against Belmont in the 2008 season opener. She carded five starts on the season, with 13 total appearances. Sophomore Bridget Lohmuller also saw action in 10 games in the backfield and had an assist.

Junior Katie Dean registered nine starts and 18 total appearances in 2008 and Sophomore Elizabeth Lillie saw action in every game last season as a reserve in the looks to compete for even more playing backfield. She scored one goal and added time this year. one assist. One of the most heralded recruits in school history, Chelsea Stewart headlines the incoming seven-member freshman class. As a player, Woodard was the goalkeeper on the inaugural Duke Blue Devil team after receiving the program’s first-ever scholarship. She still ranks high in several statistical categories of the Duke record book, including leading the school in goals against average for a season and a career, and is third in career shutouts. In addition to lettering four years, Woodard found success in the classroom as well –

she earned academic AllACC honors while serving as team captain and went on to earn an undergraduate degree in sociology from Duke in 1992 and later received a master’s degree in counseling in 1998 from UNC-Charlotte. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt in 2001, Woodard held coaching positions at Duke University, North Carolina State University, North Carolina-Charlotte, and has been actively involved as a coach in the Olympic Development Program, a national identification and development program for the country’s top players.

She has served as a state ODP head coach in South Carolina, North Carolina and Tennessee and is currently one of five ODP Age Group Coaches in Region III. Woodard has also dedicated her time coaching at many camps and youth soccer organizations. “When I got here, I was a very young coach in terms of experience,” Woodard said. “Coming here was an enormous step for me emotionally and it challenged me. Every class that I had, whether I recruited them or not, made me a stronger and better coach. I think that my

philosophy has changed completely, I think that my ability to relate to players has changed, I think that my vision has changed and I owe it all to the players that were here. I’ve matured a lot these past seven years by diving right in and being over my head early. But eight years later I feel like both myself as a coach and this program are ready to do great things.” Woodard and her husband Tom are expecting their first child, Thomas Woodard IV at the end of August.

Cristin Czubik is in her fourth season as an assistant coach with the Vanderbilt soccer program. Czubik earned accolades for her performance on the field and in the classroom at nearby Belmont University, prior to her arrival at Vanderbilt. Before becoming a full-time Commodore staff member, Czubik served as a volunteer assistant during spring practice and coached Vanderbilt Summer Camps. She also has sideline experience from her stint as assistant coach at Goucher College in Baltimore, Md., and with various club teams. Czubik turned to coaching after a stellar soccer career at Belmont. In four seasons she played in 76 games and totaled a school-record 75 career points. Her 31 career assists is also a Bruins' record. During her junior season in 2000, Czubik was named to the All-Missouri Valley Conference First Team as well as the Academic All-Missouri Valley Conference Team and followed up with All Atlantic Sun-Conference athletic and academic honors, following Belmont's conference jump. During her senior year, Czubik was also named to the Academic All-District IV Team. Czubik is very active in the community soccer scene. She has coached girls' soccer teams in Brentwood, Tennessee. An Ohio native, Czubik graduated with an English degree from Belmont University.

Eric Vaughter, a nationally respected goalkeeper coach, continues to build upon his long history of success as demonstrated during his career on the field as well as on the sideline. Vaughter enters his 10th season at Vanderbilt. Vaughter worked with Tyler Griffin (2004-06) who went on to become a two-time All-American and the most decorated soccer player in school history. As a player at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina, Vaughter became a two-time All-American, and found professional success with the New York Apollo in the American Soccer League following graduation. Vaughter began his coaching career at Appalachian State in 1979 and coached goalkeepers at Sangamon State (Ill.), High Point, North Carolina State, UNCGreensboro, UNC-Charlotte, and Duke, who took the national title in 1986 while under his goalkeeping guidance. Vaughter also coached professionals in the United Soccer League, and won back-to-back national championships with the Greensboro Dynamo IFC as an assistant and goalkeeper trainer. In the spring of 2001, Vaughter served the Commodore family as interim head coach of the VU men’s soccer program. In addition, Vaughter has served as a Region III Olympic Development Program staff coach and evaluator, and serves as a US National Team staff coach, training goalkeepers. Vaughter has also worked with the Adidas ESP camps and the ASL Collegiate program during his summers away from the Commodores. Vaughter has had a hand in off the field affairs as well, acting as marketing manager for Reusch USA, specializing in goalkeeper equipment design and “grass roots” marketing. He is owner and managing director of NET performance Goalkeeper Education Co. In 1998, he created and co-hosted a weekly radio soccer sports talk show (Soccer Today) on WCKY in Cincinnati. He and his wife, Marsha Edwards, have two sons, Zachary and Devin, and one daughter, Mackenzie.

Strength and Conditioning Coach Tasha Weddle's is in her fifth year serving as the conditioning coach for soccer, lacrosse, and women's basketball. Weddle is an Indiana native and attended North Carolina State and Evansville, where she participated in the women’s basketball programs. Following her Evansville graduation in 1996, Weddle worked as a graduate assistant for the University of Tennessee and spent time at Kent State and Purdue University before joining the Commodore crew.

Sterling Frierson Academic Counselor Sterling Frierson brings a vast range of experience and knowledge into the academic center. Frierson has a B.S. degree from Furman University in Exercise Science, a M.S. in Sport Management from the U.S. Sports Academy and an Ed.S. in education administration from Tennessee State University. Before arriving at Vanderbilt, he served as a football and track coach in Lexington, S.C. Frierson played under current VU Head Football Coach Bobby Johnson at Furman, helping the team win two Southern Conference Championships and an apperance in the national title game.

Sara Melby is in her fourth year at Vanderbilt. She previously served as athletic trainer at the University of Arkansas. Prior to that, she served five years at Marshall University where she worked with women’s basketball and softball. During her tenure at Marshall, she served as the clinical supervisor of athletic training and graduate athletic training students, oversaw summer camps and coordinated physical examinations. Melby earned her bachelor of science in athletic training with a minor in psychology from the University of North Dakota in 1999 and completed her master’s in teaching at Marshall University in 2000.

Nicholas S. Zeppos was named Vanderbilt University’s eighth chancellor on March 1, 2008. A distinguished legal scholar, teacher and executive, Zeppos served since 2002 as Vanderbilt’s chief academic officer, overseeing the university’s undergraduate, graduate and professional education programs and research in liberal arts and sciences, engineering, music, education, business, law and divinity. As provost and vice chancellor, he chaired Vanderbilt’s budgeting and capital planning council and leads all fundraising and alumni relations efforts across the institution, as well as overseeing the dean of students and dean of admissions. Zeppos has led a number of important initiatives at Vanderbilt, including the planning process for The Commons, a landmark transformation of the first year experience, the Strategic Academic Planning Group, innovative efforts in undergraduate admissions and financial aid, and the development of new programs in Jewish studies, law and economics, and genetics, among others. He also has led the university’s Shape the Future fund-raising campaign, which exceeded its $1.25 billion goal two years ahead of schedule and set a new target of $1.75 billion by 2010. Zeppos joined the Vanderbilt community in 1987 as an assistant professor in the Law School, where he has won five teaching awards. He subsequently served as an associate dean, associate provost, provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2002. He served as interim chancellor of the university from August 1, 2007, until March 1, 2008, when he was appointed chancellor. Zeppos joined Vanderbilt in 1987 as an assistant professor in the Law School, where he has been recognized with five teaching awards. He subsequently served as an associate dean and then as associate provost before being named provost and vice chancellor for academic affairs in 2002. From 1982-1987, Zeppos practiced law in Washington, D.C., at the United States Department of Justice and Wilmer, Cutler & Pickering, where he specialized in appellate litigation involving complex regulatory, statutory, and constitutional matters. He has written widely on legislation, administrative law, and professional responsibility, and is a nationally recognized scholar in these fields. He served as chair for the Scholars Committee, advising the Senate and the ABA on the confirmation of Justice Stephen Breyer, and as chair of the Rules Advisory Committee of the United States Court of Appeals for the Sixth Circuit. He has also served as a consultant to government agencies, major corporations, and trade associations on complex litigation, policy design, and strategy. Zeppos is a 1979 magna cum laude graduate of the University of Wisconsin Law School where he served as editor in chief of the Wisconsin Law Review and was selected as the outstanding graduate of his class, and a 1976 Phi Beta Kappa graduate of the University of Wisconsin where he studied history.

Vice Chancellor David Williams is one of the most influential leaders on the Vanderbilt campus in addition to directing Vanderbilt’s vast athletics program. Since September 2003, Williams has directed the effort to fully integrate Commodore athletics into the Vanderbilt community. With the support of Chancellor Gordon Gee and the Board of Trust, Williams’ efforts have helped pave the way for more student-athlete participation in the mainstream of University life. Along the way, he has placed his stamp on the program, overseeing the retention and hiring of head coaches and adding two varsity sports. Athletics is but an aspect of Williams’ influential role on the Vanderbilt campus. In addition to overseeing athletics, Williams serves as General Counsel and Secretary of Vanderbilt and its nationally recognized Medical Center, and directs the 14-member General Counsel Office, the Office of Risk Management, the University’s Compliance and Conflict of Interest functions, and the operations of the University’s Board of Trust. Williams’ professional participation on campus also includes a tenured full professorship at the Vanderbilt School of Law, lecturing on Tax Law, Sports Law and Education Law. He also teaches an annual course on Law and Higher Education at Vanderbilt’s Peabody College, and from time to time, courses in the undergraduate curriculum.Williams has not limited his activities to the Vanderbilt campus. He recently concluded a term on the NCAA Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet, helping set national policy regarding collegiate athletics. Williams also supports youth athletic programs in the Nashville community, coaching a youth basketball team for the West Nashville Sports League and serving as a timer for the Nashville Aquatic Club. Professionally, Williams serves as Chairman for the U.S. Federal Reserve Sixth District Board of Directors, Nashville Branch. He is an active member of the American Corporate Counsel Association, the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the American Bar Association. He is a member of the Continuing Legal Education committee of both the Nashville Bar Association and the NACUA. As a member of ABA’s Section of Business Law, Williams serves as an active member of the Corporate Counsel Committee. He holds terms on two prestigious legal committees – the ABA Standing Committee on Public Education and the ABA Section on Legal Education and Admissions Standards Review Committee. Williams has taught at the law schools of the University of Detroit, Capital University, the Ohio State University and Vanderbilt, and directed the Ohio State University Law Program in Oxford, England in 1992 and 1995. He was elected outstanding law professor at both the University of Detroit and Ohio State.

Administration director of Sport Operations Lori Alexander is in her fifth year overseeing sport operations. She joined the Commodore team over 10 years ago as a strength and conditioning coach working with women’s basketball, lacrosse, tennis, golf, and soccer teams. Prior to her work with Vanderbilt, Alexander worked with athletes at the Uni-

Vanderbilt Soccer Complex donated the lead gift that has enabled the first two phases of a three-tier plan to be implemented. Phase I of the project included covered two-level player benches on the sidelines for both the home and visiting teams as well as a new scorers’ table separating the two. Phase II of the project, added enhancements to the team room beneath the spectator seats. The $30,000 upgrade was funded by gifts from parents of the 2006 players as well. Phase III of the project, once funded, will focus upon improving the team’s locker room housed in the McGugin Center. The Vanderbilt Soccer/Lacrosse Complex is one of the best collegiate venues in the country. Built in 2002, the stadium is located behind the McGugin Center on the site of the old Vanderbilt Soccer Field. At a cost of almost two million dollars, the facility features improvements for fans, media, and players alike. Fans have 2,400 seats on the main structure of the stadium along the west side of the field. In addition, there are locker rooms, meeting rooms, public restrooms and a concession stand located underneath the grandstands. Media can cover the game from the state-of-the-art press box area at the top of the stadium. The playing surface consists of a Tiftsport grass on top of sand cap drainage and water cannon irrigation systems. The field’s new lighting system, installed on four 90 foot towers, offers perfect visibility during night games. The facility had some nice upgrades prior to the 2006 season. DUO EARN ALL-SEC PLAUDITS Sophomore midfielder Molly Kinsella and freshman forward Candace West received All-Southeastern Conference plaudits the league announced today. Kinsella started in all 19 games and led the Commodores in scoring with eight goals and four assists. The goal total was tied for fourth most in the conference and was a career high for the Memphis native. She led the league in shots (84), shots per game (4.42), shots on goal (40) and shots on goal per game (2.11). Six of her goals came in league action, which was third best in the league. “Molly is an incredible athlete and a tremendous competitor,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “She is the cornerstone to the future of Vanderbilt soccer.” West started in 10 of 17 games as a true freshman and finished third on the team in scoring with three goals and three assists (nine points). She had a two-goal outing in the Commodores 4-1 win over Tennessee Tech on Sept. 7. “Candace is a great young talent and provided us creativity on our attack with great technical ability,” said Coveleskie. “She should blossom into a dominant player in our league and along with Molly, she will help lead Vanderbilt back to great success.”

RYER EARNS COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD Senior Taylor Ryer was named to the Southeastern Conference’s Soccer Community Service Team. The SEC sponsors Community Service Teams for all 20 league sponsored sports. The Community Service Team looks to highlight an athlete from each school who gives back to their community in superior service efforts. Ryer has volunteered at a variety of places in her four years at Vanderbilt. The New Hampshire native worked with Kids Zone (athletes with inner city kids from Nashville), Habitat for Humanity and also

volunteered on a research study at Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital. She also participated in the Jingle Bell Walk/Run for Prevent Child Abuse Tennessee and has donated items to the local Ronald McDonald House. Ryer also volunteered at VU soccer camps over the years and participated in the Soccer for a Cure initiative with the Commodores. Ryer, a SEC Academic Honor Roll member the last two years, will gradiuate with a degree in Human and Organizational Development in the spring. “Taylor is a hard working, kind hearted and generous young woman,” said Vanderbilt head coach Ronnie Coveleskie. “She is diligent and will achieve every goal she sets for herself in the future. We are very fortunate to have had her as part of our soccer program for four years.”

The Southeastern Conference has continued its rise as one of the top conferences in women’s soccer. The 2008 women’s soccer season reaffirmed the SEC’s prominence in the country.

SEC Tournament Champion

Six teams from the SEC were invited to the NCAA Tournament. Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, South Carolina and Tennessee all made the 64-team field. The six teams combined for a record of 3-6 with the Gators advancing to the third round.

SEC Player of the Year

The SEC now has a 44-53-8 (.457) NCAA Tournament record in 56 appearances. SEC women’s soccer will begin its 17th season in the year of 2009 deeply rooted in the national scene of collegiate soccer. Since the SEC initiated women’s soccer as a varsity sport in 1993, the sport’s popularity has grown through the country and especially in the Southeast. In 1998, the SEC had its breakout season with Florida winning the conference’s first NCAA title in women’s soccer in just the program’s fourth year of existence. The league led the nation with six NCAA Tournament teams that year, an accomplishment which firmly inserted the SEC as one the major conferences in women’s soccer. The SEC also made bigger strides in its television coverage with three regular season matches and the SEC Tournament championship match shown live on the SEC-TV package. In 2003, the SEC Soccer Tournament moved to a neutral site in Orange Beach, Alabama, signifying the growth of the sports’ popularity. In 2006, SEC-TV’s women’s soccer coverage was increased to four regular-season matches, in addition to the SEC Tournament championship match. In 2009, SEC teams will make more than 15 live television appearances during the regular season. That is three times the amount of appearances from previous seasons.

Vanderbilt's Stratton Foster Academic Center offers student athletes a quiet environment to study, either through one-on-one tutor sessions, group sessions, or privately. Conveniently located in the McGugin Athletics Center, athletes can access the academic facilities during the day time and evening hours. The multi-level area is equipped with state of the art computers, as well as sofas, tables, and chairs to provide students with a comfortable studying environment. The center has received more than $1 million since 1986 for renovations and upkeep. The Commodore soccer squad consistently takes advantage of the Stratton Foster facilities, boasting one of the highest Vanderbilt varsity GPAs.

Community involvement has long been a hallmark of the Vanderbilt women’s soccer program, a tradition that has continued under Head Coach Ronnie Woodard. Emblematic of the team’s commitment to community service, the program was awarded the 2005 Tolbert Cup, given annually to the Vanderbilt varsity team that has the best combination of winning percentage, community service and cumulative grade point average. Both Woodard and Assistant Coach Cristin Czubik pride themselves in their involvement with Nashvillearea youth. Czubik currently coaches a girls’ under-16 soccer team in the Nashville suburb of Brentwood and helped pilot in 2005 what is known as the Vanderbilt University Women’s Soccer Little Sisters Program. The team adopted 23 youth soccer players from an under-9 girls club, which Czubik coached at the time. The players were each paired with a Vanderbilt soccer player to create a Big Sister/Little Sister tandem. Additionally, the soccer program runs four different summer soccer camps for youth ages five through 18 and which are open to players of varying skill levels. Both the Little Sisters program and the annual Vanderbilt summer soccer camps are aimed at both cultivating relationships with youth in the Nashville area and allowing current Vanderbilt players to give back to the community. “Some of the most important parts of our jobs is contributing to the community, getting to know the players in the community and allowing our players at Vanderbilt the opportunity to become role models for young girls,” Woodard said. “Putting our players in front of the youth of the community allows them to get to know each other and allows our Vanderbilt soccer players to become real people and people that the youth of the community can identify with.”

• Eight Vanderbilt varsity teams reached postseason play. • The women’s basketball squad reached the NCAA tourney for the 10th straight appearance, advancing to the Sweet 16. • Baseball received their fourth straight NCAA berth for the first time ever. • The football team earned its first postseason bid in years, then won the Gaylord Hotels Music City Bowl.

Academic Successes 186 Vanderbilt student-athletes achieved All-SEC Academic Honor Roll recognition in 2008-09. Of those student-athletes, 73 achieved Dean’s List status with a GPA of 3.5 or higher.

D.J. Moore became the first Commodore defensive back to earn All-America honors since 1983. Mike Minor was a first round pick in the 2009 Major League Baseball Draft, marking the third straight year a Vanderbilt baseball player was taken in the initial round. Jennifer Risper was named the nation’s top defensive player in women’s basketball. Josie Earnest was the nation’s top bowler for the second straight year. Christina Wirth was named to the Lowe’s Senior Class All-America basketball team. Six Commodore athletes earned postseason All-America honors. 26 Vanderbilt standouts received All-Conference recognition.

Several national media outlets including USA Today, The New York Times and Sports Illustrated recently have featured Vanderbilt’s athletic successes.

Superb Mentors

Vanderbilt’s four revenue sport head coaches — Melanie Balcomb (women’s basketball), Tim Corbin (baseball), Bobby Johnson (football), and Kevin Stallings (men’s basketball) — have earned SEC Coach of the Year honors during their Commodore tenures. The coaches also provide solid coaching longevity at Vanderbilt. Each has served in their current post for at least seven years.
