Picking the right Data combo for your needs Data is Data. It’s how it arrives that’s important and with Fibre, it arrives fast. However, there is still confusion about speed versus quantity and you could get stuck with a package that doesn’t quite suit your needs. Here’s a simple breakdown so you can choose the right plan.

FIBRE HOW FAST

Vs. HOW MUCH?

Downloads, emails and browsing

Streaming

Here, your attention needs to be on Gigs. You want a high Data package with any speed as Fibre is fast even on the lowest setting. As a guesstimate guide to working out how much Data to get: movies average 1.5 to 4GB in size and songs are roughly 50MB. So if you want to download just three movies, check some emails and hit social media - a capped package is perfect.

Unfortunately, binging means bulk. If you want to stream live, then you need Data quantity for quality and speed to avoid those buffering break-ups. 10Mbps is a good minimum speed, but the recommendation is 20Mbps and upwards. As for Data, you ideally want 75GB or even uncapped. Data is a big package but bite the bullet. Streaming is well worth it.

Gaming

More than one device

With an average twitch reflex of under 25 milliseconds, gamers need fast uploads. Speed is king and lines that delivers 50Mbps and upwards will give anyone a good online experience. Data wise: go uncapped for the win.

As a general rule, using several devices simultaneously needs more speed in order to keep them all running smoothly. Determine what you need from the suggestions already mentioned above and then tack on a little more Mbps if you have extra people hogging the line.

The future is exciting.

I

t’s time to cover new ground, shake things up and disrupt the industry as we move forward into a world where everyone is connected - going beyond the boundary lines to rollout fibre in areas that people never thought to put fibre before. In this first issue, we showcase those who are pioneering the way forward and explore innovation in connectivity, whether it be through the 255 schools connected with free 1 Gbps Internet or the first 1000 homes in Mitchells Plain to receive fibre infrastructure and utilise the Internet at an affordable price, building up a network of convergence.

5

2019

We also chat to CEO, Dietlof Mare, on the future of Vuma and where the company is heading in terms of innovating the future of fibre in South Africa and how new projects in the pipeline are transforming the industry at a rapid rate. We explore how fibre leads to creating connected lifestyles. We’re moving forward and invite you to join us on this voyage to connectivity.

BRIDGING THE DIVIDE Mitchells Fibre equips 1000 homes in Mitchells Plain with high-speed internet access. ACCESS VS ABUNDANCE – TACKLING THE DIGITAL DIVIDE We must, however, make an important distinction between access to the Internet versus abundant or unlimited access. In South Africa, Internet penetration is relatively high, mainly due to mobile networks, which have covered a large section of the population. This level of access was largely achieved by the introduction of prepaid solutions to lower income groups. These services made great strides to provide a large portion of the population with Internet access which is extremely important. However, these solutions have not offered the lower income groups with the real benefits of the Internet and information abundance. The cost of these services is still prohibitive in relation to the data provided. The cost of 1 GB of prepaid data, from the major mobile providers, can be up to R150 - according to My Broadband (19 October 2018). The average income for some households in these markets approaches R3000 per month. That means that a household, in this context, has to spend an astonishing 5% of the entire household’s monthly income to gain access to only 1GB of pre-paid mobile data. Vuma and other operators have, in the past five years, rolled out world-class FTTH networks across South Africa’s major cities and towns. Where these networks are established, households enjoy uncapped or unlimited access to the Internet and world-class speeds as high as 1 Gbps.

I

MPORTANCE OF CONNECTIVITY FOR ALL The importance of connectivity in modern society is evident. Access to the Internet enriches and enables the lives of individuals, communities and organisations. The Internet is the foundation of the digital economy. It is a platform for communication, education, information, new business opportunities and job creation, ultimately spurring innovation, economic growth and social well-being. Many of us cannot imagine a life without the Internet. It has become an integral part of our lives and a fundamental building block for a country and its citizens’ economic development.

7

2019

While this has transformed the landscape for many, these networks have been deployed predominantly into more affluent suburbs. The consequence is that, in addition to the economic disparities in South Africa, a digital divide is also being created. The effects of this divide have far-reaching consequences. Consider the impact that Internet access has on one of the biggest challenges South Africa faces today - education.

A child living in a lower income area may only have access to a small amount of mobile data, if at all, and is therefore not afforded the same access to resources.

A child living in Sandton, working on a school project, with an uncapped, high-speed fibre connection, will be able to research the topic, watch videos, access educational resources online, and use social media and other platforms to collaborate with other learners and friends. In contrast, a child living in a lower income area may only have access to a small amount of mobile data, if at all, and is therefore not afforded the same access to resources. Without abundant, affordable access to the Internet, the opportunity to learn and grow is substantially limited. Both children in this example have Internet access, but it is Internet abundance that makes the difference. The impact of digital inequality extends to all aspect of our lives – such as job seeking, accessing much needed information, reducing living expenses via online steaming services, creating stronger social and community networks, and even starting new businesses. All of these are only made truly possible with access to unlimited and abundant Internet at affordable prices. One could argue that abundant Internet access is becoming an essential utility to be provided to citizens and should perhaps be considered a basic human right as some countries have already adopted into law. CHALLENGING THE STATUS QUO IN THE FIBRE INDUSTRY To diminish the digital divide, we need a sustainable and scalable way to roll out broadband infrastructure to all citizens. This, however, cannot be based on charity. We need working business models to access markets previously uncharted. Charity based approaches have proven to be unsustainable and difficult to scale. Only working business models will create sufficient returns needed for continued investment while ensuring ongoing service delivery and maintenance of the network. We need business models that deliver networks that go beyond merely providing Internet access - they must provide Internet abundance. Even when mobile network operators begin providing uncapped or substantially higher data packages to the market at affordable prices, they will be constrained by a highly dense urban population competing via limited access points. The only real solution to creating abundant

access is to provide uncapped fixedline services to as many people as possible. “deploy customised, cost-efficient technologies that are future-proof and satisfies the demands of the households across South Africa with innovative products and price points” Traditional telecoms business models, driven by the developed markets like the US and Europe, offer a single product available at a single price. These models are not effective in answering the needs of the South African market. The South African population looks vastly different. In developed countries, there is a large middle-class and household income is relatively equal. Therefore, a large portion of the population can afford to purchase the same product at the same price. At the same time, the density of the population is also high and consistent which makes the cost to serve all customers or to deploy the infrastructure, on average very similar. In South Africa, on the other hand, we suffer from a highly unequal distribution of income and this requires different products to be created to cater for varying levels of affordability. Generally, in urban areas, the lower the income, the higher the population density. The density, we believe, provides the key to unlocking the product and pricing conundrum. The deployment of fibre is extremely capital intensive, but it is a future-proof technology, and the infrastructure has a very long lifespan. The amount of capital required to deploy fibre networks is driven mainly by the distance of infrastructure to be deployed per customer. In other words, the higher the density of the population, the more affordable it is to deploy the infrastructure to each customer. Therefore, more customers can be reached more efficiently and affordably in some lower-income areas due to the higher density. This landscape presents the perfect opportunity to fixed-line providers to develop different, efficient, innovative and affordable solutions to serve this market, while still providing the Internet abundance that is made possible by fibre. If we challenge our industry’s thinking by moving away from a single price for a single product to a fit-for-purpose product at an affordable price -

reflective of the cost needed to serve the greater population - we will be able to provide Internet abundance to more people and unlock the country’s potential. Give people unlimited access to the Internet, in their home, at a price they can afford and watch their lives change. Watch the economy change. Watch the country change. INNOVATIVE EMERGING MARKET SOLUTIONS By looking at number of ways to address the underserved, Vuma has identified a number of innovative solutions to offer fixed line broadband services for low to middle income households. To prove that it is possible to deliver networks that provide abundant Internet access at affordable prices to these segments, Vuma has launched a number pilot projects. One project in particular is the roll-out of Fibre-To-The-Home services in Mitchells Plain in the Western Cape. Mitchells Plain is one of the first communities that will receive a first of its kind, pre-paid fibre broadband service. Construction of the innovative, fit for purpose Mitchell’s Fibre FTTH network that will ultimately serve 42,000 households has already begun with the first homes expected to receive services in August of this year (2019). Initially, the only product to be offered will be an uncapped, up to 20Mbps fibre broadband service with retail pricing between R380 to R450 per month. The service will be sold on a pre-paid basis and the network will open access, giving consumers the freedom to choose their preferred ISP. In addition, all the schools in the coverage area will qualify for a free 1 Gbps service. In a recent site visit to this groundbreaking project, Vuma CEO, Dietlof Mare shared a memorable experience. “I recently visited Mitchells Plain to oversee the project and evaluate how we were progressing onsite. A young girl was walking along the street and was inquisitive as to what we were doing there. I informed her that we were busy rolling out fibre broadband into the neighbourhood so that everyone could access the Internet. She immediately responded by asking me what the Wi-Fi password was. This delightful meeting had me chuckling but more importantly, it reminded me why we’re so heavily invested in the project. Everyone in South Africa deserves the right to be connected.” 2019

THE ART

OF WORKING FROM HOME Forging new business paths with fibre

17

2019

F

or the budding entrepreneur, the fledgling start-up pioneer and the independent consultant – the fibre revolution is an incredible tool and support system to help you establish your business from home. We’re seeing a massive shift taking place across the world, as people move from the traditional model of the corporate environment to the work-from-home space. In this new era, working from home not only enables a healthy work-life balance – take that lunch break and meditate in the comfort of your home – but equips entrepreneurs and small business owners to take charge of their ventures. Why? It results in lower overhead costs (renting an office

space is no longer needed), you spend less time and money on commuting to and from the office, and there is opportunity to adapt smarter ways to conduct business. We’ve heard many financial experts tell us that small businesses are the backbone of the South African economy, and Fibre-To-The-Home is the backbone to the entrepreneurial community. Setting a solid foundation from which you can build on, fibre enables opportunity, grants access to a wealth of information, opens the door to efficient and effective connectivity and allows for seamless interaction - all at the touch of your fingertips.

As long as you have access to great Wi-Fi at home, you are in complete control of your work environment and you can create autonomy in how you go about business. This gives you the flexibility to acclimatise your business to your needs. Furthermore, there are many ways in which you can go about day-today business management, utilising a diverse array of online tools to assist you with project management, collaborations and communication. A Ted Talk or two can also help you as you navigate your start-up, whether it be an inspirational talk on self-growth or useful business tips to move you forward.

ONLINE STREAM YOUR WAY THROUGH

ENTERTAINMENT

T

here are many platforms to stream video and music content in South Africa. Netflix and Spotify are among the most popular services for streaming series, movies and music but the likes of Showmax and Amazon Prime Video are hot on their heels. YouTube also recently launched its premium service in South Africa, allowing you to remove ads and unlock several extra features for a monthly fee. Besides subscription based, video-on-demand services, where you pay a monthly fee to access a wide variety of content, online video rental services are also available. DStv’s BoxOffice was one of the first services of its kind in South Africa but nowadays you can also rent and buy digital versions of movies and series through Apple iTunes and Google Play Video. DStv Online now even offers their full premium bouquet for streaming online. You can now enjoy streaming, without interruptions to your signal, during a typical Highveld thunderstorm. Before you begin your online journey and purchase a smart TV or stream the latest Netflix show, check that you have the right package to meet your speed needs – you don’t want to suffer with the buffer. You’ll need a good quality line that has capacity to play 4K content. A 50 Mbps or higher line speed is recommended for buffer-free, 4K content viewing experiences in a home with multiple devices.

platforms. If you don’t have a Smart TV, don’t worry too much about going out to buy a brand-new set. You can rather look at purchasing Apple TV or an Android TV device to assist you in connecting your TV to online streaming platforms. Video game consoles such as the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One also provide apps for some of these services. If music is your thing, there are some fantastic platforms to check out which are available to the South African market. Simfy Africa, Deezer, Apple Music, Google Music, and Spotify are some of the more popular services. Apple and Google also sell songs and albums through their platforms. Just like in the subscription video market, all these services offer a free trial. Some of them, like Spotify and Deezer, offer free, ad-supported streaming, if you don’t mind the restrictions (and ads) that go along with the complimentary access to their content. If you’re looking for news based content and informative, topical information - podcasts are the way to go. This form of online audio entertainment is classified as an on-demand radio show. The content varies based on your interests. Maybe you’re a fan of fiction storytelling, or you’re interested in the latest political news, there is a podcast that will interest you. Additionally, many South African radio stations upload their show content online as podcasts.

It’s important to keep in mind that not all TVs support online streaming. However, many new smart TVs have designed apps for all the major streaming

To instantly stream 4K content on a television - at the touch of a button - without any buffering, is fantastic. It has completely changed how we consume content.

et your headset ready, get the snacks out and get comfortable. It’s time to race against the clock, fight the dragons and become the hero of your online universe. Online gaming is becoming more popular in South Africa as fibre becomes the predominant way in which people gain access to the Internet. There is a large demand for high performance broadband connectivity, allowing gamers to participate in a competitive environment. Whether you want to play online games from your computer or consoles such as PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, if you are looking to take on the entertaining world of gaming, low latency and uninterrupted connectivity are important to consider when installing fibre at home. Look at either a 200 Mbps or 1 Gbps line for optimal gaming experiences.

Most online games such as World of Warcraft, Dota2 and Fornite don’t require too much bandwidth when playing, but don’t forget to check your consumption as frequent patches and game updates can quickly rack up those gigs. If you’re interested to see what your connection and computer are made of, you can try and play an online game while live streaming a video of your gameplay. Twitch, which has been acquired by Amazon, is one of the original online services to focus on livestreaming game-oriented video content. “STRANGER”

THINGS The Internet of Things and what it really means.

You know how the leg bone is connected to the knee bone? And the knee bone is connected to the thigh bone? And so, the song goes. Let’s adopt this analogy to our understanding of the Internet of Things (IoT). We’ve heard the term loosely thrown around in social conversations or on a tech-related blog or two, but what exactly does the Internet of Things mean and how is it transforming the way in which we live our lives? In its simplest form, like how each bone in the human body is connected, the Internet of Things is the connection of multiple devices to the Internet e.g. a network of connected things. For example, your smart phone is connected to Alexa, your smart TV, smart fridge and every plug point in your home. “Alexa, turn on the bedroom lights,” or “Alexa, play my favourite Spotify playlist.” 29

2019

Sounds a little strange and futuristic doesn’t it? Well, this way of life is becoming more prevalent as technology advances at a rapid rate and as we pursue ease and convenience in between the chaos of modern living. We haven’t quite reached the stage where robot butlers greet guests at the door with their preferred drink of choice in hand but we’re slowly moving towards a connected lifestyle and the Internet of Things can get a little more complex as you go along. You can take your home automation to the next level whereby you connect everything from your kettle to your air conditioner to the Internet, and gain the ability to control your entire home from a mobile based app. Depending on the IoT systems you install, you can switch on lights before you arrive home, control your home entertainment system, and open your gate, all over the Internet. Furthermore, you can take your home security up a notch, by placing cameras around the perimeters of your home which are set to alert you when they detect movement. With a high capacity home broadband service connected to those cameras, you can log on from your phone and see what’s happening at your home from anywhere in the world.

Besides the convenience and enhanced physical security technologies IoT can offer, in the future, this movement could help us optimise the amount of energy and water we use. It could also assist us in leading healthier lives. Watch this space. What about security and privacy? The advancement of technology can in itself, create uncertainty, particularly when the topic of security and privacy is mentioned. Cyber security is one of the major concerns when referring to IoT. As is with most things in life, adopting this concept into your everyday life comes with certain responsibilities. While most home users don’t have to worry about Mission Impossible-style attacks as a result of their smart home systems, there have been multiple cases of IoT devices being hacked by cyber-attackers. All this really means to you, the home user, is that you’ll have to adopt basic Internet security principles and ensure that you use unique and strong passwords on every device you’ve connected to the Internet. Keep abreast of the latest news in security, updates in the field and ensure that the devices in your home are kept up-to-date. You then won’t need a group of “monster busters” to protect the universe of privacy from invasion.

SUPERCHARGE YOUR HOME WITH SMART WI-FI

Get complete control of your Wi-Fi connection with Supersonic smart Wi-Fi, powered by Plume. You’ve gone to great lengths to install fibre in your home. The infrastructure is in place and you’ve spent a large amount of time researching which ISP will support your connectivity needs and give you the speed and coverage you need to connect to a world of endless opportunities. Sunday rolls around and it’s one of those days to stay home and binge watch your favourite series or a spot of live sport. However, your bedroom is situated a few hundred meters away from your traditional router and the speed is a little slower in this neck of the woods – your screen is sometimes pixelated and that awful buffering circle of death makes an appearance from time to time – affecting your pleasurable viewing experience. The traditional Wi-Fi router has replaced the dial-up connection, and we’re all happy about this - the infamous dial up tone is ingrained in the brains of anyone over the age of 30. Wi-Fi revolutionised our way of life as the router gave us access to the Internet without directly connecting to a modem. We’ve moved forward, transitioning from ADSL to fibre (*clapping hands enthusiastically*) and while fibre allows for high speed Internet access - at speeds of up to 1Gbps, it is still connected to your Wi-Fi router, the hub of your Internet 31

2019

connectivity. Naturally, the further you move away from the hub, the poorer your Internet connection will be. Those dead spots around the house can become frustrating when your Wi-Fi signal shows 1 bar and it takes 5 minutes to load a single web page. If this happens in your household and affects your way of life, it’s worth exploring your blanket coverage options. A Mesh Wi-Fi solution, like Supersonic’s Plume Mesh network system is a good place to start. What is mesh Wi-Fi? It is simple really; • Mesh Wi-Fi consists of a main Wi-Fi router or ‘Access Point’ that is directly connected to your standard issue router. • A series of additional ‘Access Points’ are placed in areas of low coverage within your home. • These ‘Access Points’ connect to one another to create a solid network, bringing you fast connectivity wherever you need it. You won’t need to connect to a separate network as they all share the same SSID or network name. • Mesh Wi-Fi provides better coverage and better speeds throughout your home, creating a seamless solution for you and your home.

How do you go about it and is the price right? It’s simple, the Supersonic technicians will conduct a full Wi-Fi sweep of your home and advise on how many Plume devices you need to get 100% coverage in your home. Based on this, the technicians will make a recommendation for your optimal smart Wi-Fi solution. Upon acceptance, your device/s will be installed, allowing you to manage them yourself via the Supersonic App. Device options: • Single device: R1 099 once-off OR R49 for 24 months • 3 device bundle: R3 099 once-off OR R145 for 24 months • Management fee: R10 per device, per month will be charged from activation i.e. if you purchase 3 Plume devices, you will pay a R30 per month management fee.

BUILDING A CONNECTED AND ACCESSIBLE FUTURE One school at a time Vuma, in collaboration with its Internet Service Provider partners, believe in creating a world where everybody has access to the tools needed in order to pursue a bright future. The future begins with the youth and by supporting their educational needs. This enables growth and opportunity for the leaders of tomorrow and is something that’s incredibly important to Vuma, a company built on partnering with communities within its large network of infrastructure. That’s why, in 2014, Vuma pioneered an incredible initiative with its network of ISPs, to help provide schools with both the infrastructure and high-speed Internet learners need in order to chase their dreams and access a wealth of information that enables them to grow.

This game-changing initiative has not only revolutionised education in local communities, it has helped make education and learning fun. It is a proud moment for all involved in this project when they listen to school principals and educators discuss the positive impact that free and uncapped 1Gbps Internet has had on their learners. Instead of avoiding the Internet due to slow speeds and high bandwidth costs, schools connected to Vuma’s fibre enjoy making use of online content as part of their lessons.

255

Enabling community connection is the heartbeat of this project. What better way to build a community than by empowering schools to connect to a world of opportunities and possibilities, transforming the way in which schools and their learners experience the Internet. Since inception, this passion project has helped connect over 255 schools with access to free 1 Gbps fibre and counting.

SCHOOLS

As the country transitions from ADSL to fibre, it is only fitting that schools jump on the bandwagon as they navigate the journey to the future of education in the digital era. Bandwidth and speed are two key components that are integral in this mix as - in the past - slow speed, unreliable connection and the high cost involved in educating hundreds of students online at once, prohibited schools from utilising the Internet to educate learners.

33

2019

The ease at which teachers can connect to the Internet has completely changed the school environment, as e-learning tablets are now used in lessons and learners are accessing online educational resources in their classes.

Sparrow School Principal, Leona Krishna, sheds some enthusiastic insight regarding the impact fibre has had on her school, “Teachers now use online learning programmes to best fit the needs of every learner in the school. Research has become a fun aspect of learning as students have access to a world of knowledge.”

Vuma is proud to work alongside the following ISPs on the schools’ project:

Active Fibre, Afrihost, Comtel, Cool Ideas, Easy Web, Home-Connect, Legends Connect, Mweb, Rocket Net, RSA Web, Skyfi, Web Connection, Websquad & WIRULink

Empowering learners is always a

COOL IDEA In this issue, we chat to ISP, Cool Ideas, who have been instrumental in getting the schools project off the ground. Here’s what they have to say about their involvement. How many schools have you provided free Internet to? Cool Ideas has connected over 125 schools across the country since the launch of the initiative in 2014. We initially went live with Parkhurst Primary back in 2015 and it’s been incredible to see the amount of schools that have been connected with free fibre since then. Why did you decide to get involved with Vuma on this project? We believe that being involved in the community is very important. Cool Ideas was born out of the same community that embraced Vuma and part of the way we can give back to those communities, is by investing in them through initiatives like these.

We believe that fast, uncapped and unrestricted Internet in schools has a positive impact on learners and educators.

We have invested heavily into this project over the years and look forward to continuing its growth as fibre spreads throughout South Africa.

With the rise of globalisation, we believe there shouldn’t be a barrier between learners and information, allowing them to stretch their minds, acquire knowledge and explore a world that’s unlimited in its resources.

What feedback have you received from schools, since providing them with Internet access? We have had overwhelmingly positive feedback from the schools we’ve provided free 1Gbps services to. We’ve heard stories of learners sitting in the school library for hours at a time, using the Internet to research. We’ve been told that admin staff find using the Internet provides them with more efficient ways to get their tasks done and communicate with parents. Most importantly, teachers are using our services to teach in a more interactive and engaging way. Every single story and every ‘thank you’ we get only reinforces the positive impact of this very special project.

What does this project mean to you as a company? We’re incredibly honoured to be part of the Vuma school project. As our main corporate social initiative, it’s not only deeply rooted in our DNA but a passion that flows through all that we do as a company. Every chance we get to connect a school is such a privilege for us, as we feel that every school in every type of neighbourhood can really use this complimentary service to enrich the learning experience.

Sparrow School Principal, Leona Krishna, says “Highspeed Internet access means that teachers can now use online learning programmes to best fit the needs of every learner in the school. Research has become a fun aspect of learning as students have access to a world of knowledge.”

Laerskool Fountainbleau Principal, Arno Faber, praised the reliability of the Vuma network - “Since the installation of Vuma fibre, our school has enjoyed uninterrupted connectivity. We have also been able to invest in interactive boards for the classrooms because of the free 1 Gbps connection.”

CHANGING THE FACE OF EDUCATION WITH FIBRE SCHOOL TESTIMONIALS

Franklin D Roosevelt Primary School Principal, Hilton Westlake, echoed these views - saying that high-speed connectivity has opened many doors to the teachers and learners at the school. “Teachers are now enjoying much faster Internet access and can make their lessons more efficient. The option to utilise e-learning platforms has now become an option for learners, which will allow them to bring tablets to school and move away from textbooks,” he said.

35

2019

The school’s IT Manager, Quentin Janse van Rensburg, mentioned that their previous ADSL connection was not sufficient for the school’s Internet needs. “There was a lot of lagging, downtime and vital time wasted on slow connectivity. Since the introduction of Vuma fibre, students are getting through lessons quickly and teachers can access the Internet faster,” he said.

TALKS

Fibre

My journey with the Internet started in the early 1990’s with my first dial-up modem getting up to speeds of 14.4 Kbps. That U.S. Robotics modem made the most glorious sound every time it connected on the land line. Remember that noise your dial-up modem made as it negotiated the connection, the handshaking as they call it, that screeching noise every time your modem connected to your service provider? Who can forget the frustration a scratchy line noise posed to your connectivity. That first search on the AltaVista search engine and that first website paved the way for the wonders of the Internet. Those dial-up modems quickly ramped up to 28.8, 33.6 and 56.6 Kbps speeds. As consumers, the need for speed was critical as we were hooked when we started streaming audio and videos.

37

2019

I will never forget going on a press junket to Yzerfontein just outside Cape Town in April 2011 to witness the landing of the West Africa Cable System (WACS). The 14 500 km undersea cable with a capacity of 500 Gbps that stretched across the West Coast of Africa from the United Kingdom, was set to change our Internet experience forever. It is incredible to think that this undersea cable, a bit larger than a garden hosepipe, with tiny-hair like strands of fibre, has the capacity to download thousands of high definition movies in seconds! Since then, several undersea cables have landed on our shores and injected much needed capacity to our speeds and launched us onto the world platform. This is why fibre is a game-changer for everyone.

“This is why

fibre is a game-changer for everyone”

My conversion from ADSL to fibre happened two years ago and the experience has been incredible. It is like night and day! While politicians do lifestyle audits, I enjoy doing a digital audit on my home router. It is actually amazing to see how my habits have changed since first getting connected to the World Wide Web. From one computer in the 1990’s to multiple devices today. The increase in data speeds, decrease in pricing and Moore’s law have paved the way for new technologies that are democratising our digital lives. The Internet of Things has added another layer of connectivity to our lives, as sensors become smarter and technology becomes even smaller, we have the opportunity to create vast amounts of data that adds value to our daily lives. Currently, I have over 100 different devices connected to my home network. Apart from my computers, tablets and mobile devices, IOT has made my life so much easier. Camera access allows me to keep tabs of any security issues, I am able to remotely turn my alarm on or off, I can change the temperature of my geyser and even get alerts if there is a leak.

My thermostats monitor my home temperature and talk to my air conditioners, who in turn know what my preferred temperature is and can simply turn on when my home system knows I am approaching home. My smart rain gauge tells me how much rain has fallen. Smart speakers have the ability to stream music anywhere and share information by just using our voices for commands. Today, we can connect anything we like to our home networks, from lights to fridges and even remotely open doors. Suddenly, our homes are starting to develop their own digital nervous systems. The value this will bring to our lives has not begun to be measured properly yet. The best thing about fibre is the entertainment value it opens up. To be able to stream 4K content on a television instantly, at the touch of a button, without any buffering is fantastic. It has completely changed how we consume content! Fibre is revolutionising everything we do – from business to our personal lives. It is making us more agile, adding flexibility and changing the way we do things. It is adding an economic impetus into societies who didn’t have Internet access before, and this ultimately will have a positive impact on our economy going forward. 2019

GET TO KNOW

VUMA CEO, DIETLOF MARE

D

ietlof Mare joined Vuma as CEO a little over a year ago. A seasoned businessman in the telecommunications industry, Mare joined Vodacom in 1995 when the company was still in its infancy. He worked in South Africa for three years before moving to the DRC to head up operations for five years. He then spent some time in Tanzania before joining Vodafone in Eastern Europe, living in Albania for six years. With his children studying abroad, Mare and his wife decided it was time to return to South Africa and in 2018, Mare took on the role of CEO at Vuma, replacing Niel Schoeman, one of the visionaries behind the company.

We chat to Mare about his passion for business in emerging markets, his vision for Vuma’s growth over the next few years and the stand-out projects the company has become involved with. Q: How has Vuma evolved since you joined?

Q: How are you and your team driving innovation at Vuma?

Q: What is your vision for the future of Vuma?

A: While I have only been at Vuma for just over a year, we are in the middle of a big transition as the company has been bought out by CIVH. There are many moving parts as we transition into the next phase as a business. It has been over four years since we first broke ground in Parkhurst. Today, we have connected over 560 000 homes, making Vuma the biggest fibre provider in South Africa. It’s incredible to see how fast the company has grown over a short period of time. Furthermore, we have some incredible projects on the go, ones that are empowering local communities and connecting thousands of South Africans who didn’t have access to high-speed Internet services before.

A: We are driving transformation in the sector and breaking connectivity barriers wherever we can. We are putting fibre in areas where many never thought fibre would go. We want to change the way we get data into areas that really need it, the demand is there. Our project in Mitchells Plain is in its early stages but we have just connected 1000 homes with infrastructure and Internet. We are innovative when we think about how we can address the opportunities to connect our communities. We’ve spent a lot of time devising a model that works efficiently in an emerging market environment, one that allows for the use of technology without compromising the quality of the service and more importantly, at an affordable price point.

A: There is a lot of opportunity for growth in the industry. I believe we are on an upward trajectory as we continue to focus our attention on equipping major metros with fibre. We aim to trench ourselves in one million homes across Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban in the next two years. We have also seen a lot of growth in Ekurhuleni and will continue to invest in this area. Furthermore, we want to provide 42 000 homes in Mitchells Plain with affordable fibre Internet and move this project into other communities around the country.
