URBAN DESIGN ANALYZING MANGALORE Mangalore is the cheif port city of the Indian state of Karnataka. It is located about 352km west of the state capital, Bengaluru, between the Western ghats and the Arabian sea. The studio aimed at getting an understanding of the city and its growth pattern. An indepth study of the old portside of the city was conducted and proposals were developed based on the issues and the needs of the city. The studio gave an introduction to Urban design in our undergraduate course.



The Site The region for the proposal is in the oldest part Mangalore known as the Old Port area. The zone has major landmark like the SBI circle. The proposal developed through an indepth study of the growth of Mangalore with the proposed Mangala corniche road connecting the city to the major neighbouring cities like Calicut to Mumbai.

Precinct Model- Study area for Urban design



The central precinct see the formation of a virtual separation between the city and the old port. The proposal aims at reconnecting this part back to the city.



PROJECT REWIRE THE INSERT

The site chosen for the project was the Old Port of Mangalore which had been underutilised. The design was developed by the context around the site, including the major nodes which would support the design programs. Each node had been thoroughly surveyed and the impact of the proposed Mangala Corniche road was studied to understand the future needs of the city of Mangalore and propose the design. The design proposal aimed at creating a new identity for the city of Mangalore along the Mangala Corniche road which would connect the major cities.

The Exhibition centre designed as a huge domical structure is the focal point of the design. The space is flexible for different types of activities, for example, to conduct art exhibitions, seminars, public meetings The Performance plaza is connected to the Exhbition centre, which becomes an extension of the centre. This area is designed for community use like dance studio, workshops, hobby class.

11. Commercial Complex



The commercial complex has an access road parallel to Mangala corniche to reduce traffic congestion. The complex is designed to create an experience of an Indian bazaar, with multiple kiosks, and a variety of commercial activities. A street cuts through the commercial complex leading to the plaza

KALASHAALA ARTS & CRAFTS COLLEGE

The site is located near the hilly terrain in Channapatna, well known for its handicrafts and wooden toy making. The proposal seeks to bring art students seeking to learn about the traditional crafts and keep the heritage alive. The aim of the project is to allow the artist to explore through architecture and make the space his own. The campus being his canvas for expression.

The concept for the design is based on interactive learning and freedom for creativity . The blocks are arranged along an axis that ends at the node where the different departments are radially organised. The sloped roof converges into the centre creating dynamic interactive spaces.

TRIBAL REHABILITATION HOUSING FOR JENU KURUBAS

The Jenukuruba tribal inhabits the forest area that forms a conclave of the 3 states of Karnataka, Tamilnadu and Kerala. The tribal housing and rehabilitation programme aimed at providing education and a better livelihood for the Jenu Kurubas. The housing master plan is in a grid-iron pattern with houses centred around a community courtyard. All the programmes were centred around the Open Air theatre.





The housing typology has been designed while taking into consideration, the sociology of the Jenu Kuruba tribals. The tribals are more like an extended family and hence their sense of privacy is very minimal. The tribals are very social among their groups hence, they need spaces for gathering and social interaction. The houses are such that, there are very few walls and it is more flexible to allow for social interaction among the dwellers.

The school for primary education, within the rehabilitation housing was designed while keeping the architecture typology intact and creating harmony among all the blocks within the campus. The school is designed to buffer the lower primary and upper primary students, with a courtyard in the center for students to hang out, have lunch, play. A dash of bright colors have been used to create energy in the space for children.

VILLAGE DOCUMENTATION MUDUKUTHORE

TEAM MEMBERS - Vinay Vinod Philip, Sanjay Cherian, Abiram Bairv

As part of studio 3, we had to survey Mudukuthore, a village in Mysore district of Karnataka. The documentation project gave us an enriching experience of the evolution of settlements, rural architecture, and study of local materials for construction. The documentation of the housing typology gave us a learning experience to conduct surveys and architectural observation.

The house documented was a hundred year old and passed on to the next generation, the renovation of the house can be seen as a change of material from mud construction to cement and brick construction. The house was centred around an open courtyard with all the rooms surrounding it.

STREET FURNITURE STUDIO BUILDING CONSTRUCTION TEAM PROJECT

The street furniture design was part of a 2 hour time problem in Studio 7. The furniture is designed while looking at the needs of the public in a street setting. Street food in India is quite popular but there remains a lack of space for seating while eating. The design was developed looking at how the street furniture could be easily transported, and transformed when not used. The furniture acts like a planter box when it is closed up and provides as a street landscape element.
