PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL

Dear Paul Family and Friends, Greetings! I am honored that you chose to share this occasion with us. As we celebrate eleven years as a distinguished public charter school, we strive to honor our legacy of achievement. The theme of our 2nd Annual Gala is “Honoring our Legacy: 11 Years of Excellence.” This year’s honorees include recent Paul graduates that have continued to excel, exemplary teachers and staff, and current M.E.R.I.T. scholars that have already demonstrated their commitment to excellence. Paul Public Charter School stands as the sole DCPS conversion charter, founded by Cecile Middleton. Mrs. Middleton was a pioneer and trailblazer in education in the District of Columbia, having an instrumental role in the design of Benjamin Banneker Academic High School, serving as an Assistant Superintendent, and finally as the founder of Paul PCS. Mrs. Middleton believed that mediocrity was unacceptable and constantly expected nothing less than excellence from her students. Mrs. Middleton galvanized community-wide support to petition for Paul’s charter status, and in 2000 Paul Junior High School became Paul Public Charter School. We are proud of our accomplishments as a school this year, which include the opening of the Lisa Elaine Johnson Dance Studio, the growth in our Green Schools garden beds, the plethora of experiences during the 9th Grade Capstone project, a recipient of the Fulbright Teacher Exchange Program, and noteworthy high school acceptances into National Cathedral School, Banneker Academic High School, School Without Walls, The Field School, Maret, Sidwell Friends, Edmund Burke, St. Andrews, and DeMatha Catholic High School. The 2nd Annual Gala is an opportunity to celebrate all of our accomplishments, our incredible legacy of achievement, and the supportive and hard-working community of scholars, teachers, staff, parents, board members, volunteers, and supporters. This year we honor three outstanding young Paul alumni to highlight our unique Triple A Program: “Academics, Arts, and Athletics…Experience it All at Paul!” Chidi Agbaeruneke (Academics), Sydney Parker (Arts), and Toure Lawrence (Athletics) represent the high caliber of alumni that have contributed to Paul’s continued success and legacy of achievement. This year we also celebrate the commitment and dedication of our veteran teachers with the Lifetime Achievement Award to honor their 25 or more years in education. To culminate the list of stars that we are recognizing, we highlight the efforts of additional members of the Paul Family including our Parent of the Year, Teacher of the Year, and Staff Member of the Year. Thank you for taking the time to celebrate with us! Happy 11th Year Anniversary Paul Public Charter School! Warm Regards,

Jami D.H. Dunham, Head of School

PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL

Dear Paul Faculty, Students, Parents, and Supporters: Let us give Paul Charter School –“a standing ovation.” On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to sincerely congratulate the Paul Charter School on this historic 11th anniversary—an achievement that has been marked by a total commitment to the quest of knowledge for its students. You have made a difference, you are making a difference, and you will make a difference." Since the school’s founding eleven year ago, Paul has sought to provide its students with the academic and life skills which lay the foundation for achieving success in life—to develop in every student the willing desire to be “a responsible citizen, an independent thinker, and a thoughtful leader.” Paul has served more than two thousand students with many of its graduates attending some of the city’s best high schools. Today, Paul is recognized as one of the District’s premier charter schools; and we, on the Board, are very privileged to be working with this remarkable bunch of talented students, faculty, and staff. Everything that the school has accomplished is great; but we know that much work lies ahead—a wide open future lies ahead of you. We will continue to support Paul’s mission to educate our students to prepare them for tomorrow’s leaders. On behalf of the Board, we thank you for sharing this occasion with us. Congratulations for 11 years of victory! I wish the entire Paul family the best that the future has to offer.

Best Wishes, Jim Moss Chairman, Board of Trustees

PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL

Our History Paul’s rooftop steeple is a neighborhood beacon, a symbol of welcome to the diverse students from across the District of Columbia who seek a program offering academic rigor in a character-building culture. Paul was awarded its charter status in 2000, becoming the first conversion public charter school in Washington, D.C. Named after a pioneering D.C. educator, Edward Paul, and operating as a D.C. public school since 1930, Paul has a strong tradition of academic excellence and community involvement. Paul’s partners in education include The Kennedy Center, Positive Coaching Alliance, Peach Through Culture, Higher Achievement Program, Trans-Atlantic School Innovation, American Institute for Research, American University, Howard University, and DC-College Access Program, all of whom provide vital mentoring enrichment, planning and facilities assistance. Paul Public Charter School offers students in grades 6-9 a quality education. Paul has high expectations and believes that all children can learn and benefit from a rigorous academic program, which includes the sciences, humanities, mathematics, literature, and fine arts. Coupled with leadership, global and local awareness projects, and community service opportunities, Paul’s program promotes activism and a strong work ethic. The school’s structured and highly individualized program provides vital support for students during the critical middle school years. A strictly enforced Code of Conduct based on checks and balances helps students modify behavior and attitudes to develop the character and academic prowess they need to become responsible and productive individuals, critical and independent thinkers, open-minded and cooperative team-players, and most importantly, the leaders of tomorrow.

Alumnus Awards ACADEMICS Chidi Agbaeruneke Jr. My name is Chidi Agbaeruneke Jr. Being an alumnus of the Class of 2007, I have continued to endeavor in my ambitious Academic pursuit. During my years at Paul, I participated in various activities such as Robotics, Science Fair, and NIH. The experiences I gained from those activities and others, I kept with myself as I completed my four years at Benjamin Banneker High School. During those four years I worked and did community service at Walter Reed Army Medical Hospital and Holy Comforter Episcopal Church. Out of the seventeen college and university acceptances and total scholarship offerings of about $683,000, I am proud to have the honor of attending George Washington University through the Trachtenberg Scholarship where I will major in Biology within the Pre-medicine curriculum. My future goals are to become a cardiac surgeon and to create a non-profit for international student exchange to promote health awareness and intellectual stimulation through other compelling issues.

ATHLETICS Ture Lawrence I am Ture Lawerence. I left Paul with a 3.5 gpa and made the honor roll my 7th and 8th grade year. I was awarded MVP for the 2008-2009 season (8th grade), the same year my team went 22-0 including a league and city championship. I was a part of Constitutional Law class that was offered my 8th grade year, and came 2nd in our final courthouse debate tournament. I got accepted to every school I applied to and chose to attend Maret on an academic scholarship. I finished my Freshman year as the leading scorer and rebounder on my varsity team. My squad finished 3rd in the league, and I was voted into the City's Freshman All-Star classic. I finished my freshman year with a 3.1 GPA. My sophomore year is coming to an end. I was tied for leading scorer this year, and 2nd in rebounds and assists. I maintained a 3.2 GPA and I took two senior classes (Algebra 2/Trigonometry, Physics) My team came in 3rd in the league this year and finished with a record of 18-8. I've won numerous basketball championships, and VP awards in my short career, but I've received even more academic awards. I've been a part of Washington D.C's youth advisory council for 2 years, worked in a junior school's resource officer program, and been apart of Maret's student council. This year I was named co-captain of my basketball team and this summer I will be playing AAU basketball. I will be competing at a higher age group (17's). I've worked hard to earn my achievements but I always know there is more to be accomplished and my journey isn't finished yet.

Public School Charter School Paul PublicPaul Charter • Paul ARTS Sydney Parker “To love is to risk not being loved in return. To hope is to risk pain. To try is to risk failure, but risks must be taken because the greatest hazard in life is to risk nothing.” This quote I believe relates a lot to how I live my life. I believe that if you don’t try your hardest and risk failure, you don’t have any chance of making your dreams come true. My name is Sydney Parker. I am turning 15 on August 5, 2011, my favorite color is green, and I absolutely love food. I’m a person who has more than meets the eye. I believe the only two people in my life who have a clear vision of who I am are my parents. I am very passionate about dance. I’ve been seriously dancing for a total of 3 ½ years. When I left my elementary school, St. Mary’s of Piscataway and went to Paul PCS my elective in 6th Grade was Dance & Drama. After the first week of the class my teacher, Ms. L. E. Johnson, asked me if I would like to become one of the Paul Dancers. She said that she saw how hard I worked to get better at dancing because trust me, I was not that good. I wasn’t flexible, I didn’t have any dance technique what so ever, and I was clumsy. I grew more and more and so did my passion for dance. It was all I could think about and it still is. Dance is a part of me and always will be. By the end of 8th grade I was Ms. Johnson’s principle dancer due to my technique, athleticism, and how hard I worked. At my graduation, she awarded me with the Outstanding Dancer and Choreographer Award that she made especially for me. She said that I had made her so proud. She said that it was amazing that she had a part in me becoming a beautiful dancer. In my mind I wanted to tell her that she was the one who found me and made me the dancer that I am today. I am currently on the Royalette Dance Team at my high school Bishop Denis J. O’Connell and I love it. The girls are amazing, lovable, and kind. They took me in as their own and love me like a sister. We all know that we are there to dance but we also have a lot of fun along the way. Another passion that I have is Science. I want to go into bacteriology when I get older. I use to hate science when I was in elementary school. I was barely getting a B. When I went to Paul I had the coolest 6th grade science teacher. Her name was Ms. Cizek. She made it so much fun. I will never forget our first lab. It was a forensic lab on our new class mascot Peter the Panda. Yet she didn’t tell us that immediately. The day after getting him, Peter the Panda was missing. The whole lab lasted for about a week and we had to figure out which of our teachers had taken him. Not only did we learn allot of things about science, we learned that science could be allot of fun. In 7th grade I had another very good teacher. Her name was Mrs. Vereen and she was the best science teacher I have ever had. She taught Life Science and I remember me being so fascinated with the different cell structures and unicellular organisms and just the study of life. My 8th grade Science Project was my favorite one out of all three that I had done over my junior high years. It was testing different bathroom disinfectants on the bacteria E. coli. I worked in an NIH lab with a woman named Ms. Elise and I learned so much. I won 1st place at my school’s science fair and won 3rd place in Microbiology at citywide. It was such a great experience and was a big part in my love for Science to this day. I’m very independent and always have been even when I was a baby. I wasn’t the child who cried when my mother left me at daycare or the child who got homesick. I was the child who ran away from my mother when she dropped me off at daycare or wanted to stay out and have fun. I always knew that my mom and my home would always be there. I wanted to explore new things. I still do to this day.
