PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL
Greetings Paul Family, Friends, and Supporters! Thank you for your support of our 3rd Annual Gala and Fundraiser! Your support makes a significant difference in the lives of our scholars. As an educational institution for over eighty years, Paul has been a beacon of hope for the Brightwood Community and specifically for our scholars. Our conversion to a charter school twelve years ago was unprecedented; however our founder, Cecile Middleton held firmly to her vision of providing a high quality education for all students. Ms. Middleton’s vision and legacy continues, as we strive to fulfill our mission each day. Our mission is to educate our students and to develop in them the capacity to be responsible citizens, independent thinkers, and leaders. Your support at our Gala and Fundraiser allows us to provide the tangible resources it requires to fulfill this mission. Our MERIT Scholars face many obstacles and challenges, but with the support of their parents and their Paul family, they have been able to accomplish their goals in an emphatic way. This year, we have continued to focus on providing a comprehensive program for our scholars. The “Triple A Program provides scholars with rigorous Academics, a variety of Arts experiences, and an opportunity to compete and develop in Athletics. Through the “Triple A Program, our scholars this year have accomplished amazing feats: ‡3DXO 3&6 ZDV UHFRJQL]HG DV D 7LHU 6FKRRO E\ WKH 3XEOLF &KDUWHU 6FKRRO %RDUG ‡7ZHQW\ ILYH VFKRODUV ZHUH LQGXFWHG LQWR WKH 1DWLRQDO -XQLRU +RQRU 6RFLHW\ ‡7KH %R\V %DVNHWEDOO DQG &KHHUOHDGLQJ 7HDPV EURXJKW KRPH FKDPSLRQVKLS WURSKLHV ‡7KH *UHHQ6FKRROV &OXE ZDV UHFRJQL]HG IRU WKHLU RXWVWDQGLQJ FRPPXQLW\ PXUDO ‡3DXO 'DQFHUV &RQFHUW %DQG DQG &KRUXV SHUIRUPHG IRU GLVWLQJXLVKHG YLVLWRUV The accolades mentioned reflect merely a snapshot of the long list of accomplishments and noted recognition for our scholars. We remain most proud of the daily progress that we can observe, as our scholars become Motivated, Educated, Responsible, Independent Thinkers! We are excited about expanding our program to offer a full high school for our scholars. With your support we can not only prepare our scholars for high school, but we can also directly ensure that our scholars are prepared to go to and graduate from college so that they can be successful in life. Thank you for your continued support, generous donations, and best wishes! Enjoy your evening! Warm Regards,

Paul Public Charter School • Paul PAUL PUBLIC CHARTER SCHOOL
Dear Paul Faculty, Students, Parents, and Supporters: On behalf of the Board of Trustees, I would like to sincerely congratulate Paul Public Charter School on this historic 12th anniversary—an achievement that has been marked by a total commitment to the quest of knowledge for its students. Since the school’s founding twelve years ago, Paul has sought to provide its students with the academic and life skills which lay the foundation for achieving success in life—to develop in every student the willing desire to be a responsible citizen, an independent thinker, and a thoughtful leader. Paul has served more than two thousand students with many of its graduates attending some of the city’s best high schools. Today, Paul is recognized as one of the District’s premier charter schools; and we, the Board, are very privileged to be working with this remarkable group of students and talented staff. Everything that the school has accomplished thus far is great; but we know that much work lies ahead. We will continue to support Paul’s mission to educate our students to prepare them for challenges they will face as tomorrow’s leaders. On behalf of the Board, we thank you for sharing this occasion with us. Congratulations for 12 years of victory. I wish the entire Paul family the best that the future has to offer. Best Wishes,
Jim Moss Chairman, Board of Trustees

Paul Public Charter•School Paul Public Charter School Paul
Our History Paul’s rooftop steeple is a neighborhood beacon, a symbol of welcome to the diverse students from across the District of Columbia who seek a program offering academic rigor in a character-building culture. Named after a pioneering D.C. educator, Edward Paul, and operating as a D.C. public school since 1930, Paul has a strong tradition of academic excellence and community involvement. Cecile R. Middleton became the Principal of Paul Junior High School in the early 1990’s. She had been a trailblazer in education in the District, touching the lives of thousands of students. Throughout her career, Ms. Middleton had been an exemplary teacher, school administrator, and area superintendent. She is credited also for her instrumental role in redesigning Banneker Academic High School. She began her fight to convert Paul Junior High School to a charter school in 1997, and after several attempts, Paul was awarded its charter status in 2000, becoming the first conversion and only public charter school in Washington, D.C. Ms. Middleton’s vision was to create a school that relentlessly pursued excellence. She was non-apologetic about her opposition to mediocrity and bureaucracy. With the autonomy that the charter status allowed, under Cecile Middleton’s leadership, Paul Public Charter School quickly became one of the top-performing secondary schools in the city. Ms. Middleton led Paul until she retired in 2003. Although she passed away in 2008, her legacy has remained strongly intact. She was adamant about ensuring that scholars had an opportunity for a high quality education at Paul and beyond. Paul has prepared middle school scholars to excel and graduate from the highest-performing college prep high schools in the area including Banneker, School Without Walls, Sidwell Friends, Maret, The Field School, McKinley Tech, DeMatha, The Bullis School, and Wilson. In 2009, Paul expanded its middle school program by opening the Cecile R. Middleton Ninth Grade Academy as a “school within a school” model to provide a structured and nurturing transition for students entering their first year of high school. This additional option for families has proven to be successful in providing students with the support needed to transition into high school. Paul offers students in grades 6-9 a quality education. Paul has high expectations and believes that all children can learn and benefit from a rigorous academic program, which includes the sciences, humanities, mathematics, literature, world languages, and fine arts. Coupled with leadership, global and local awareness projects, and community service opportunities, Paul’s program promotes activism and a strong work ethic. The school’s structured and highly individualized program provides vital support for students during the critical middle school and freshman years. A strictly enforced Code of Conduct based on checks and balances helps students modify behavior and attitudes to develop the character and academic prowess they need to become responsible and productive individuals, critical and independent thinkers, open-minded and cooperative team-players, and most importantly, the leaders of tomorrow. As MERIT Scholars matriculate at Paul, they experience a well-rounded “Triple A” program, including rigorous Academics, exposure to the Arts, and opportunities in Athletics. Paul’s partners in education over the years include: The Kennedy Center, Positive Coaching Alliance, Peace Through Culture, Higher Achievement Program, Trans-Atlantic School Innovation, National Institute for Health, American Institute for Research, Josh Howard Foundation, Winners Lacrosse, American University, Howard University, and Higher Achievement Program—all of whom have enhanced the Triple A Program in Academics, Arts, and Athletics. The future for Paul remains bright. Due to a strong and stable foundation, the Paul community looks forward to many more years of academic excellence. In fulfilling its mission “to educate our students and to develop in them the capacity to be responsible citizens, independent thinkers, and leaders,” Paul is poised to provide more for its scholars, including expansion to offer a full high school program.
