VINCENT YEE | ARCHITECTURE PORTFOLIO

1

Architecture describes a deliberate effort for the built-environment to do more than keep people out of the rain. It brings within its scope a multiplicity of concerns, among them: function, safety, cultural relevancy, equity, environmental impact, and its own construction, durability, and destruction. The people who pursue architecture must then orchestrate solutions that speak to all these facets because they understand that, with or without intention, the built-environment will inevitably impact all of these things. While they may often be contradictory, some are delightfully harmonious, predictably or serendipitously. Architecture is complex and contains multitudes. It seems to me that the best that architects can do is develop a sensibility about the multiplicity of concerns, because, certainly, an architectural solution cannot practically be formulaic. It has to be cultivated from a rich accumulation of failed pursuits, learned lessons, and explored curiosities. This portfolio illustrates such a cultivation during my undergraduate and graduate studies at Georgia Tech.

Urban Environmental Research Center synthesis of volumes B.S. ARCH: 2ND YEAR, SPRING 2009 The nature of the city block along Edgewood Avenue in Atlanta as a composition of clustered commercial functions serves as a strategy with which to design the urban environmental research center. The project is a synthesis of clustered volumes that house similar functions. Each cluster is wrapped in a cladding system that is functionally congruous and expressive. Instructor: Keith Jundanian

02 Velux Competition: GT Learning Center reflecting on reflection B.S. ARCH: 3RD YEAR, SPRING 2010 Ruminating on the act of contemplation, this proposal explores understandings of reflection both literally and figuratively. Evoking the typology of cloisters, the design situates private spaces over a grand public space, creating a spectacular lightwell and dialogue of illumination for this center of learning. MAP

The objective of this proposal is not to design simply a house, but a home for the Cordoba family immigrating from Bogotรก to the suburbs of St. Louis. Reflecting on the interests and needs of the tight-knit family, what became most important to the design was the inclusion of a hearth space and universal accessibility, as well as careful consideration of the neighborhood context. Collaborators: Audrey Plummer, Ralph Raymond, Chi Chi Ugenyi, Ken Mai Advisors: Herman Howard, Dawn Trimble, Nekia Strong

04 Le Refuge des Insurges inciting history B.S. ARCH: 4TH YEAR, FALL 2010 In the Eighteenth District of Paris, it is apparent the lack of public space that is genuinely accessible to everyone. In a city that is already densely saturated, perhaps the rooftops are a new frontier. Evoking the history of the Commune of Paris, a nearly forgotten social revolution, this proposal is the first access point to the rooftops of Paris. At a site where the communards themselves once took refuge, perhaps it is here that all peoples regardless of gender, class, and race may find their space and reflect on the spirit of a people united. 05 Post [Post Office] Office nesting public space M. ARCH: 1ST YEAR, FALL 2015 The Olgethorpe ward system largely defines the urban form of Savannah, GA, and its public spaces. The pervasive form likewise drives the initial massing of the project, a public incubator space that carries on the spirit of a post office into the 21st Century context. Nested at the center of open office spaces is a public courtyard, propagating vertically with a sprinkling of occupiable platforms and universally accessible ramps. This “hub and its connective tissue fosters human connection, serendipitous interaction, and exposure to cultural diversity. The activity of the ground floor hugs the sidewalk, engaging and contributing to the public right of way. A promenade continues the sidewalk through the building to further draw pedestrians to engage. Professor: Brian Bell

a living building at Georgia Tech M. ARCH: 1ST YEAR, SPRING 2016 The spirit of Place particularly resonated with the proposal. Locating the project at the intersection between the midtown urban fabric and the campus ecocommons allows the building to be a threshold for the campus and the living building tenets. A skinny form with a density of program minimizes and conserves the built footprint. By incorporating a porosity of unconditioned space for every conditioned program, we propose a living building whose interior spaces breathes with best qualities of outdoor spaces. Similarly, the adjacent landscape that would otherwise be an empty lawn is activated with an equal density of designed activity. The building is also lifted to create uninterrupted, physical continuity between the urban fabric and the landscape. Collaborators: Roberto Bucheli, Coston Dickinson Professor: David Yocum

More public program sandwiches the more private activities of the campus facility as a strategy to disrupt programmatic compartmentalization and foster a culture of openess and serendipitous interaction. Stairs and central elevator cores carve through the building, reinforcing uninterrupted, equitable accessibility throughout the building, from the ground floor sidewalk to the penthouse.
