“The idea motivating the work was that linguistic rhetoric should determine all its modes of expression – its dramaturgy, music and staging. Background The concept for Cantio was developed from the ancient genre of rhetorical hymns once used to escort the gods into or out of the city.

In particular, the farewell hymn as described by Menander was to be sung at any departure, whether imagined or real, of the gods. Thus there is a sort of existential ambiguity in the song’s motivation, which Joyce and Baltakas have chosen to expand upon, by suggesting that this form might cover anything from the routine comings and goings of the gods (i.e. ceremonies, festivals) to a more serious perception of a loss of their presence.

The traditional speech was meant to charm and entertain the gods with description of places they might visit, but the speaking poet also had the task of delaying their passage from the city as long as he or she could, thus showing regret for their departure as a way of showing the city’s reluctance to see them go.

In the opera, this traditional form of the hymn has been transformed into an endless one, an excerpt from an eternal continuum; we might see it as an echo of an imaginary speech given when the gods were seen to be leaving for the last time, leaving not only the city but the world, never to return. In this aspect Cantio is understood not in a religious sense but rather in an existential sense. The speaker, hoping to delay them, and not knowing if they have really left or not, continues endlessly, relying on geographical legend, enchantment and oratorical dramatics, as well as a simple persistence. In the Sharon Lynn Joyce text the original rhetorical fragment grows until it becomes visible, audible, with real places and personages.

Das Konzept für Cantio entstammt einer alten Form der rhetorischen Hymnen, die einst dazu dienten, die Götter in die Stadt hinein oder hinaus zu begleiten. Besonders die Abschiedshymnen, die Menander beschreibt, wurden bei jedem Aufbruch der Götter gesungen, ganz gleich, ob das Ereignis real war oder imaginär. Es gibt also eine Art von existentieller Mehrdeutigkeit in der Motivation dieses Gesanges, auf die Joyce und Baltakas eingehen, indem sie andeuten, dass diese Form alles abdecken kann, vom routinemäßigen Kommen und Gehen der Götter (also Zeremonien und Feste) bis zu der ernsteren Erkenntnis des Verlusts ihrer Gegenwart.

Die traditionelle Rede sollte dazu dienen, die Götter mit einer Beschreibung der Orte, die sie besuchen könnten, zu unterhalten und zu entzücken, doch der sprechende Poet hatte auch die Aufgabe, ihren Aufbruch aus der Stadt so lange wie möglich hinauszuzögern.

In der Oper wurde diese traditionelle Form der Hymne in ein endloses Werk transformiert, in einen Ausschnitt aus einem ewigen Kontinuum. Wir können sie als Echo einer imaginierten Rede betrachten, die gehalten wurde, wenn die Götter zum letzten Mal Abschied nahmen, und nicht nur die Stadt, sondern die Welt für immer verließen. In dieser Hinsicht wird Cantio nicht religiös sondern existentiell verstanden. Der Redner spricht immer weiter, weil er den Aufbruch der Götter verzögern möchte und nicht weiß, ob sie noch zugegen sind. Er stützt sich auf die örtliche Legende, auf Verzauberung, rednerische Dramaturgie und simples Beharren. In der Sharon Lynn Joyce Text-Fassung wächst das ursprüngliche rhetorische Fragment bis es sichtbar und hörbar wird, mit wirklichen Orten und Personen.

Kerstin Wiehe, the founder and manager of K & K Culture Management & Communication, was the driving force behind the foundation of the Kulturkontakte e.V. Society, which itself came about from many years of cooperation among cultural activists in widely-ranging socio-cultural fields.

Other founding members include urban planner Hans-Jörg Bahrs, stage director Cornelia Heger, cultural events manager Katja Lucker, visual artist David Reuter, dramaturge Jens Schubbe and assistant director Katharina Tarjan.

Der Verein KULTURKONTAKTE e.V. entstand aus der langjährigen Zusammenarbeit von Kulturschaffenden aus den verschiedenster Bereichen in kulturellen und soziokulturellen Zusammenhängen. Initiatorin ist Kerstin Wiehe (Gründerin und Geschäftsführerin von K&K Kulturmanagement & Kommunikation).

Weitere Gründungsmitglieder sind Hans-Jörg Bahrs (Stadtplaner), Cornelia Heger (Regisseurin), Katja Lucker (Kulturmanagerin), David Reuter (Bildender Künstler), Jens Schubbe (Dramaturg) und Katharina Tarjan (Regieassistentin).
