F-C-A Athlete
of the Month CATRINA PEARSON MUSKOGEE High School Choices are something made daily with great consideration by Catrina Pearson. A junior at Muskogee High School, she is a member of the Roughers’ golf team and a two time qualifier for the Class 6A Girls State Golf Tournament. “I try to make my choices God’s choices,” said a confident Pearson, who currently serves her classmates as President of the 2011 Junior Class. “I always try to honor Him and sometimes that’s not a popular or easy choice. I just have to remember that even when no one else is looking, He always is.”
“By knowing God’s word through Bible study and Quiet Time, I can almost always have a smile on my face no matter what happens,” grinned Pearson. “I try to be an influence for Jesus Christ through a positive attitude and being willing to stand up for others. That allows me to be His witness by developing relationships that everyone knows are genuine.” Catrina begins each day with her favorite scripture as her guiding thought:
Proverbs 4:23 “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.”

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. Muskogee Federal Credit Union celebrates achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.”
Whitney Reece
Dependability and Determination…two invaluable character traits evident everyday in the life of Whitney Reece. The talented and eversmiling senior at Westville High School plays many different sports during the school year in addition to maintaining her academic and community opportunities with a spirit of competition.
Westville High School
“Whether its school work or playing sports, I like to make it fun and exciting,” Reece said confidently. “Whatever sport is in season, whatever class I’m in, its my favorite thing to do.” Reece plays golf, basketball, volleyball, track and soccer as well as sideline and competitive cheerleading. Academics are important for Reece, who maintains a 3.67 GPA and has earned the Presidential Leadership Scholarship to Northeastern State University. “Whitney is a dedicated athlete (7 sports) whose leadership abilities shine through her character and moral integrity both on and off the field,” said Becky Whiteley, volleyball coach for the Yellowjackets. “My parents taught me to always do your best, and do what’s right in everything you do,” said Reece. “Because, eventually, it’s up to you what happens. Even when you’re an underdog, if you’ll help others and push yourself to succeed, you never know what will happen. By doing your best no matter what, you can always hold your head high. I get just as much satisfaction by seeing others succeed as I do myself achieve. ” “The two words I would use to describe Whitney are energy and enthusiasm,” said Bill Allison, soccer coach and government teacher at Westville. “She brings such a positive attitude to everything she does that she makes herself and those around her better.” “I don’t like losing,” admitted Reece. “Yet, you still must example success by your attitude and through hard work.” “Whitney is true to her character and values,” said Tammy Eagleton, basketball coach at Westville. “She has been a success in anything and everything due largely to the young lady’s desire to be a winner. Whitney is self-motivated and willing to work to achieve her goals. I can’t say enough about the child’s heart for the game. She never quits and always believes!”

arch madness was at a feverish pitch as five teams from Three Rivers advanced to the Big House in search of the Big Gold Ball. As many teams watched from the bleachers, the quintet of teams from Three Rivers’ thrilled their fans at this year’s state tournament.

This season was perfect for Fort Gibson as the Lady Tigers of head coach Jerry Walker completed an undefeated season 28-0 by winning the Class 4A Girls State Championship. The road to a state title had its anxious moments of nerves and excitement. In the opening round, the Tigers rallied from a halftime deficit to eliminate Jay 48-44 to advance to the semi-finals against Vinita. In the semi-finals, the Lady Tigers trailed by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter before senior Nana Wallace and teammates would engineer a thrilling come from behind effort including the winning basket from Wallace with 4 seconds to play to get
TALIHINA GOLDEN TIGERS 2011 CLASS 2A BOYS STATE CHAMPIONS
the victory 55-53 over Vinita to advance to the Gold Ball contest.
In the championship finals, the Tigers would meet number one ranked Cache, the defending 4A champs. Again, Fort Gibson would overcome a second half deficit behind timely scoring from Wallace along with teammates Jodi Glover, Julia Hill, Taylor London and Kirby Parnell to force an eventual overtime. In the waning moments, freshman Savannah Gray connects on one of two free throws to provide the margin of difference in the 52-51 win and the Class 4A State Championship, the first girls’ basketball state championship in the school’s history after three previous runner-up finishes in a row from 20062008.
After being eliminated in the Area finals last season, this year’s Class 4A girls’ state tournament also included the Wagoner Lady Bulldogs who completed a 20-and-7 season before bowing out in the opening round of the state tournament losing to Weatherford. JODI GLOVER FORT GIBSON HIGH SCHOOL

GAME PLAN Class 4A boys included another Three Rivers’ team as the Running Rangers of Roland made the trip to the Big House. Coach Ed Lewis’ determined cagers battled to the wire before dropping a first round decision to Vinita.
In Class 3A girls, Spiro would be among the final eight teams competing for the state title. Facing elimination since the first round of regionals, Coach Kayla Carrington’s determined group of Lady Bulldogs won five straight contests to advance to the Class 3A state tournament before losing to the eventual champion Bethel in the opening round.
In the championship game, the Preston Pirates would be the opponent. Again Talihina’s smothering defense would stifle the opponent as the Golden Tigers celebrated with a 42-27 victory. The state championship victory completes a story book career for the senior class combining an overall record of 106 wins during the past four seasons including three trips to the state finals and the big gold ball in 2010
For the Talihina Golden Tigers, the fourth time was the charm. In each of the past three years, the Tigers had lost state tournament games by one point, including overtime heartbreakers in the state finals in 2009 and 2010 one point setbacks. The 2010-2011 Golden Tigers were a team of destiny.

A senior laden team including standouts Taggart Lockhart, Jordan Eagle Road, Chris Capsey and Jace Chancellor, the Golden Tigers would not be denied. Talihina would eliminate Chouteau 43-33 in the opening round. In the semi-finals at the Big House, coach Chris Gillespie’s squad bounced the Stratford Bulldogs 71-57 to make it back to the state finals for a third straight year.

Oktaha golfer Kailey Campbell seeks a State Championship By Bill Huddleston Photos By John Hasler
Campbell, like other proven successful golfers, knows the key to success is consistency. “I follow the same routine every shot whether I’m on the practice range or during every round,” claimed Campbell.

“I’ve thought about that moment every single day since then,” admitted Campbell. “It’s been the driving force behind my practice every day.” In golfing terms, Campbell is taking dead aim.

“I started practicing everyday at Fountainhead,” said Campbell. As soon as school was out, I was there ‘til dark everyday.” The routine habit was a daily pattern. After hitting a couple of buckets of balls on
“I’m going to win the state championship medalist trophy,” Campbell said with a look of confidence recalling the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat from last May. Campbell celebrated the joy of a team championship while holding back her tears of heartbreak after a third place medalist finish.

Upon reaching junior high school, Campbell’s passion was obvious to her coach Chester Pittman. “We had just started the golf program at Oktaha when Kailey was in the 7th grade. She shot 49 the first time she played nine holes in competition and her intensity was on fire. It’s all she’s wanted to do since then 24 hours a day 7 days a week.”
And, now as Campbell prepares for her sophomore season competing for Oktaha High School, her love is a full scale passion of the game with one goal in mind everyday.
::
“Ever since, it’s all I’ve wanted to do, grinned Campbell. “I can’t explain why, it was just fun. I wanted him to play everyday and wanted Grandpa to always take me with him.”
Upon reaching high school, Campbell’s practice habits and talent paid immediate dividends. During her freshman campaign in 2010, Campbell played the number one position and won 6 medalist honors (first place individual titles) while combining with her teammates for a perfect season of tournament victories, including a second straight Class 2A State Championship. The Tigers ran away with the 2010 team title with a winning margin of 64 strokes over the second place team. VYPEOK.COM

t age 12, many young girls and boys long to spend a day in the summertime with grandparents. So, when her grandfather called and invited Kailey Campbell to play golf, she enthusiastically accepted. And, from the very first swing of her grandpa’s golf club, blossomed Campbell’s new found love for the game of golf.
the driving range, followed by another bucket at the chipping green and practice bunker, Campbell would spend 20-30 minutes putting and then play as many holes of golf as possible until dark.

“Oh yeah,” smiled Campbell. “We have a lot of fun playing golf. And, we all want to win, every time. Best of all, all of us know we can rely upon each other. The Lady Tigers return almost their entire squad from last year with seniors Emery Fox and Chloe Nichols joining Madyson Fox, Jaylie Roper along with Campbell.
Oktaha continued its winning ways opening this season winning the team championship at Savanna and the Oktaha tournaments, including first place finishes for Campbell. The Tigers have won every team tournament over the past two seasons which bolsters team confidence for another state championship.
“I’m confident we can make it three in a row,” claimed Campbell. I know that with perfect practice, we can do it. We just have to work hard everyday.” “I’ve got confidence in my teammates that together we can win it. And, I’m also going to have to play my best to get the medalist honors too.” With the combination of team practices mixed with individual lessons and personal practice time, Kailey Campbell is on the road to success and willing to exchange her 17 tournament titles over the past year and a half for her personal aim of the Class 2A individual championship.
“I’ll trade all the individual trophies for the state medalist honors,” said Campbell. It’s a perfect combination. Our team wins and I can finish first too.”

“Take 2 or 3 practice swings behind the ball, pick out a spot in front of the ball to aim at, then set up and let it fly. You have to play every hole, shot for shot. Play the first shot for the next one.”

With the state tournament memories vividly fresh on her mind, Campbell’s results of “perfect practice” continued to pay off in victories during the summer season in 2010. Campbell claimed eight tournament championships last summer while competing on the South Central Junior PGA circuit and the Oklahoma Junior Golf Tour. Included in the victories was Campbell’s personal best round of her career, a 4-under par 68 at Owasso Golf and Athletic Club. “Kailey recognizes that she is in control of her score,” said Pittman. “That’s why she’s out there working on every facet of her game, every day.” And for Campbell, preparation includes more than just swinging the golf club. While some of her teammates competed in softball and basketball during the fall and winter seasons, Campbell continued to practice as well as lifting weights and running. “It’s all part of the preparation to get better everyday, said Campbell.
As the 2011 season begins, Campbell reunites with her friends on the golf team looking to have fun and make the final result a three-peat finish of another state championship.
