Bixby Mom Debbi Coder always makes time for her family and her community. Debbi is a proud Mom of daughters Cassi and Makenzi and sons Kayson and Kyler, with a fifth child on the way. Debbi volunteered as Cheerleading Booster Club President for two years when her older daughter Cassi was a cheerleader. When younger daughter Makenzi was a cheerleader, Debbi served another year with the Booster Club. With a smile on her face, Debbi has organized fundraisers, t-shirt and ticket sales and arranged food for the football team before every game. Last year, Debbie and daughter Makenzi designed and sold a t-shirt as a special fundraiser to benefit a family in Sapulpa who lost their son. They sold more than 1,200 t-shirts and donated all of the proceeds to the family. Debbi’s daughter Cassi nominated her Mom because: “She has the largest heart. Her heart always aches for people in need.” A few years ago, Debbi and her family began the process to adopt a son from Ethiopia whom they call Crew. While Crew is already in their hearts, they are still waiting for the court date to officially make him part of their family. Debbi is an amazing example of love and compassion to her family and to her community. She consistently donates her time and talents to her loved ones and to Bixby schools. For that we salute you, Debbi Coder. Congratulations on being our Million Dollar Mom of the Month! We know we can’t begin to compete with a mother’s priceless gifts. That’s why we’re proud to support Vype’s “Million Dollar Mom” winner. She’ll receive free concert tickets from us and thanks beyond measure.

15 | Grill - Coach Speak While working on the football preview magazine, we asked area coaches for their thoughts on the upcoming season. Find out what they had to say about their team and their chances.
18 | Triple Pay Karly Judkins is a varsity cheerleader at Jenks High School. She’s also one of the best power tumblers in the world. We sat down with Karly, her father and her coach for this month’s edition of Triple Play.
20 | Rivalry Time Jenks and Union renew their annual MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl, reigniting the best high school football rivalry in the country. But what about other rivalries we’ve grown to love? VYPE takes a look at the Top 10 rivalries in Eastern Oklahoma.
Same As It Ever Was Here we are at the start of another football season. This is my sixth season as the Editor for VYPE and I’m as excited today as I was for my first season. That excitement for football resonates through every city and town I’ve traveled to this summer and if that’s any indication on how good this year could be, then we’re in for one heck of a football season.
The Backyard Bowl has lived up to the hype every year, so why should we expect anything less this year? “It’s Your Move” is a statement commonly made in the game of chess to your opponent. Last year many people, myself included, felt Jenks was the favorite to win the gold ball, but Union grabbed their third in a row leaving the fans from Jenks shocked and wanting more. The last time Jenks went three years without a gold ball was in the early 80’s to early 90’s. The Trojans are ready to “make their move” this season and head coach Allan Trimble will have his team prepared for the difficult task of winning district 6A-3 and getting back to the title game. Normally we would not do a feature this big in August. With more than 10 pages of coverage, the Rivalries issue is exactly what’s needed as the season prepares to kickoff. Whether it’s Cascia Hall vs. Holland Hall, Sand Springs vs. Sapulpa, these Top 10 rivalries are aces in our book.
Don’t forget to follow is on Twitter at VYPEOK and on Facebook at VYPE Oklahoma. If you’re interested in becoming a reporter for VYPE contact me at brad.heath@vype.com.

Football Season is Here The 2011 Football Preview was an excellent magazine and I want to thank VYPE for doing it. VYPE Reporter I noticed your ad to become a VYPE reporter. What exactly are you looking for and how does someone get involved? Any information you can provide is appreciated.
John K. Sand Springs
Editor’s Note: Thanks for the email John. We’re looking for individuals to contribute to the VYPEOK. com website by providing content and photos to that schools specific page on our website. Shoot me an email with the name of the school you are interested in covering. Thanks again. Brad.Heath@ vype.com.
Live Streaming I know VYPE is doing live streaming of games now, would you consider doing something on volleyball? I think the parents and players would love to see that with so many of the teams traveling across the state.
Rachel L. Jenks
Editor’s Note: Yes, we’re looking to broadcast some volleyball this season. We’re also looking for individuals who can run a camera and broadcast their own school on our website.
More Photos I think your magazine is great, but one suggestion I would like to make is for your staff to include more photos when you do stories. Make them larger if you have too. But more photos would make your magazine even better.
Ira D. Tulsa
Editor’s Note: Thanks for the suggestion. We’ve actually done just that with a new formatted Picture This. Also look for more photos in features. Our photographers do such a great job it’s almost a sin not to include as many as possible.
Radio Show? Will VYPE be doing a Saturday morning radio show? Last year VYPE did a show on AM 1430 The Buzz every Saturday morning and talked high school football. Would love to hear it again. Brian P. Broken Arrow
Editor’s Note: Thanks Brian. It’s in the works!

The 2011 football season is just around the corner. Here are some of the quotes we received from area coaches about the upcoming season. Class 6A
Steve Spavital-Broken Arrow “We’re excited about the make-up of this team. We must strive to improve each week and to develop consistency and production.”
Allan Trimble-Jenks “Great competition at several positions should make fall practice exciting. We have a very experienced senior class who will provide solid leadership for our team.” Dustin Kinard-Sand Springs “We hope to improve on last season. We have a lot of kids back this year that got valuable playing time last year. We want to pressure the quarterback on defense and run a balanced attack on offense.”
Class 5A
Kevin Jones-Collinsville “We will be a very young team. We
have three returning starters on offense and defense. Our young team’s effort and toughness will have to be maximized to compete in the district.”
Anthony Fogle-Nathan Hale “It will take time for the new faces to blend together. However we have a solid core of players and more depth than the previous two years.”
Class 4A
Don Gibson-Daniel Webster “I feel like we want to see ourselves improve. We are a very young football team with only four seniors. Hopefully we can work and get a spot in the playoffs.” Aaron Meier-Catoosa “Every season is an exciting one. We are looking forward to getting started. We have had a great offseason and our kids have worked hard. We know to get back to the playoffs and be competitive in Class
4A-3 it will take a lot of hard work from now until opening day.”
Jason Landrum-Mannford “We return six starters on defense with a lot of speed on that side of the ball. We are looking for a lot of improvement on that side. Offensively the backfield should be a strong point with an improved passing game. The offensive line is being completely rebuilt since all five starters graduated.”
Dan Bitson-McLain “Commitment. We lacked that last year. We have that now. We’re more experienced because a lot of freshman played last year. We have to execute and stay healthy.”
Brandon Craig-Oologah “We are going to be young, but we are excited for the challenge. Defensively we’re quick and attacking. Offensively we run a hightempo aggressive passing game and AUGUST 2011

GRILL a solid run game.”
Greg Werner-Broken Bow “We lost a tremendous group of players, but we are excited about the future. Broken Bow football has great tradition and we hope to continue that.”
Class 3A
John Horner-Okmulgee “We’re going to build off of a strong summer program and improve on our record. We have aggressive D-line and a wide open attack.”
Bob Craig-Beggs “We tell our kids to concentrate on the process, not the outcome. Ramsey Hamilton, if not the best, is tone of the best quarterbacks in the state.”
Brett Jones-Valliant “Coming off the best season in school history (10-2) we expect there to not be a drop off. We’re in a very competitive district and we’ll have to earn a playoff spot. We’re a little bit of an unknown and it’ll be fun to watch this team grow.” Pat Harper-Berryhill “We have one of the toughest districts in the state, but we return a lot of starters. Guys will step up on offense and play physical when we run the ball. We must be consistent on defense. Attack and pursue.” Kelly Anderson-Kellyville “We are looking for our strong senior class to give us a chance to improve on last year’s record and make a run at the playoffs. We’re a sound and disciplined team on defense with a balanced attack on offense that forces opponents to defend the entire field.”
Brent Marley-Victory Christian “We lack some depth up front so we have to stay healthy. If we do, we have an opportunity to be improved from the 2010 team. We need to capitalize on the opportunity in our hands with a lot of heart, work, guts
16

AUGUST 2011
and sacrifice ahead.”
Class B
Wade Wolf-Chelsea “We’re excited to see how this team builds on last years success. We’re going to play aggressive defense and run a ball-control offense with an explosive power game.”
Class C Ryan Mullins-Claremore Christian “Returning players must develop some leadership and younger/ new players need to develop some consistency. If we do this we will improve each day.”
Class 2A
Mark Jones-Chouteau-Mazie “We’ll have a fast, aggressive defense with a spread offense that features a good run game that will help establish the passing game.”
Eddie Barnwell-Kansas “An infusion of youth looks to make an impact on our team this year. Returning starters at many positions will help in the development of our underclassmen. With strong senior leadership, this year’s team looks to improve on last season’s record. Expectations are high for this season in the Comet nation.”
Darren Melton-Lincoln Christian “We have the opportunity to field a good team this year. Our offense returns with the experience needed to be productive. Defensively our new scheme should help accentuate our personnel. We are excited about what the season holds and are anxious to get started.”
Class A
Scott Harmon-Hominy “Our tough non-district schedule prepares us for the toughest district in Class A and for the playoffs. We need to focus our speed on defense and be a little more balanced on offense.” Jesse Leigh-Foyil “We have an offense that rushed for over 3,000-yards last year and it should be even better this season. We return all of the offensive linemen and only graduated one running back. Defense will need to the most work, but we’re very good at defensive end and in the secondary. We have to replace all of our linebackers.”
Ron Davis-Summit Christian “We are very young, but we have a lot of upside due to our skill position players. Our district is very tough, but we hope to compete for a playoff spot this season.”

ne fact is for certain, we know how to play football in Eastern Oklahoma. Plain and simple. Tulsa ranks in the top ten in the country in division scholarships awarded per capita. From the coaching, to the youth feeder systems, to the school and community support, to the way we live, it is just the way things are in Eastern Oklahoma.

With great football quality and a plethora of athletes coming out of the Tulsa-area every single year, it is only natural that the great high school football programs engage one another in the best rivalries around. Take a look as we go in-depth on the top 10. We want your feedback at Oklahoma@VYPE. com.
F E AT U R E
Jenks vs. Union Was there any debate? A rivalry that has amassed more than 440,000 spectators over the last fifteen years is one that VYPE has dubbed the best in the country. Though the capacity crowds that filled the old Skelly Stadium (40,000) of 1999 and 2000 are legendary, the average of over 20,000 spectators still show up twice a year. We say twice a year because the Skins and Trojans have faced each other in the state finals 11 years including the last six class 6A championship battles. The two south-Tulsa juggernauts still provide the best athletes, coaching, fans, and all around thrilling finishes. Last year’s 50-47 state championship heart-stopper in Stillwater saw the underdog Redskins pull through for their third consecutive state title. All with wins over Jenks. As the great Bobby Fisher would say, “It’s your move.” 2011 is going to be a very
special season and the Allan Trimble’s Trojans are going old school in their preparation. Getting back to the core values that saw them win a record seven straight state titles from 1996-2002. “We are going to get after it,” said one of the state’s best defensive line tandem Ashton Henderson and Orion Jones. “We have worked extremely hard and we know what is at stake.”
The rivalry of Jenks and Union was once full of good ‘ol fashion hatred. In 1994, the Trojans beat the Redskins and the Jenks student body stormed Union-Tuttle Stadium, ripping the goalpost down in the south endzone. For the ensuing next 10 years, it was an all-out war. The players didn’t like each other, the coaches didn’t like each other (At least there was a little respect towards one another), and the two separate communities didn’t like each other. And that was the recipe for the start of the best high school football rivalry in the country. The

two teams have claimed the last 15 state titles (Jenks with nine and Union with six), but over the last five or six years, the rivalry has taken on a new direction. Athletes growing up in the systems of Jenks and Union have developed more friendships with one another, there is more respect given to one another, and there is more of a brother against brother embrace. You know, like when you are the only one allowed to beat up on your brother. This is not a bad thing by any means. Both teams know they demand the best out of one another and there is more mutual respect. But for some reason, the domination of the Skins in the last three state title contests has re-ignited the fire in 2011.
8 YEARS OF MIDFIRST BANK & THE BACKYARD BOWL MidFirst Bank is entering its eighth year as the exclusive presenting sponsor of the MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl between Jenks and Union. As the second largest bank in Oklahoma there is a great deal of responsibility that MidFirst feels to the communities that it serves. The Jenks and Union game is just one way that MidFirst serves students, schools and parents in the community. “MidFirst believes in supporting our communities and what a better way than to sponsor the MidFirst Backyard Bowl and this great rivalry between Jenks and Union,” Ed Fariss, Executive Vice President of MidFirst Bank, said. “Many people look forward to this game every year and we are happy to be part of that tradition while contributing to both schools and their academic goals.” MidFirst Bank will make a donation of $10,000 to each school. MidFirst is happy to support other schools also. The MidFirst Fundraising Van program partners with school groups to raise coin that students, parents and fans can drop into the specially outfitted coin counters on the van. MidFirst then matches what is raised, up to $1,000. Open to all Tulsa area schools the van is the perfect way to raise funds for school teams and clubs and organizations.

The van will be featured at the MidFirst Backyard Bowl and many other area football games. To arrange for the free MidFirst Bank fundraising van, call 699-7231.

“We haven’t looked forward to a season as much as we have this year,” said Alex Ross. “It is going to be a lot of fun and we know it is going to be long and we will probably have to get through those guys (Redskins) in the end.” The Trojans return arguably the state’s top player in Ross. The senior was a freak last year, averaging over 12 yards per carry. Henderson and Jones will lead a defense along with corner Brad Calip and defensive end Sam Laptad. Also look for Cameron Colbert at the linebacker position. Trey’vonne Barre’ has a chance to emerge as one of the better wide receivers, while the quarterback position is more than likely going to go with Hunter Collins. Also battling is Kyle Alexander and Derrick Brumble, and the players who may not be the starters might find themselves in other positions on the field for the Trojans.
On the east side of Yale Avenue in South Tulsa, The Skins return four-year starter Blace Walser at linebacker to lead the defense. Kyle Krutchmer was a playmaker on the defensive side of the ball for the Skins in 2010, and look for Javon Boler to return after missing all of last year with an ACL tear.
On offense, the Skins will rely on do-everything quarterback Hunter Atiyia. As a sophomore, Atiyia filled in for the injured Kale Pearson and helped lead Union during the 24

season. Another junior who will break out this year is running back Kendall Holmes. Shifty tailback will need to continue to work hard and develop if he is to become a great back at Union. Upfront the Skins will rely on Blake Christian and Blake Mejia while newcomer Kendal Davis will provide a steady target for Atiyia at receiver.
The Redskins have a group of new assistant coaches this season and head coach Kirk Fridrich is the right man for the job in getting everyone on the same and continuing the success. “Chemistry is a big deal for a new staff as well as for the players and morale,” said Fridrich. After a 2010 hiatus from Chapman Stadium at TU, the MidFirst Backyard Bowl will be back at full force with a 20,000+ crowd. With the amount of talent and the caliber of both teams, we should have another nail-biter in this year’s Backyard Bowl. It will be a chess match in 2011 and it is Jenks’ move.

Two of the best private schools in Oklahoma have converged for the first game of the season for the past couple of decades. Long-time coaches Joe Medina of Cascia and Tag Gross of Holland Hall embrace the kickoff of each season by going toe-to-toe. All pride is on the line when these two teams mix it up because the Dutch play in the Southwest Prepatory Conference and have no stake in the OSSAA classifications of Oklahoma High School Football.
Cascia Hall At quarterback the Commandos have two very capable seniors in Thomas Rouse and Patrick Bass. Rouse started most of last season and played very well in big games. Bass will also play tailback and return kicks while Hunter Hart runs hard and is an exceptional lead blocker. Hart could also see time on the defensive line. Max Bell and Malcolm Mason make another one-two punch out of the backfield. The offensive line graduated three starters, but return Ryan Nigh at tackle and Brett Asher at guard. The linebackers may be the best in the class with Tulsa University commitment Connor Sherwood and Rocco Driscoll along with Abram McQuarters and Danny Brennan. This squad is relentless in their pursuit of the ball. The defensive line features Wes Bowman who usually faces a double-team every play. The Blue Swarm defense is based on running to the ball and creating turnovers.
2005 SPC CHAMPIONS
Holland Hall
After one of the most successful years in Holland Hall history, Tag Gross has some re-building to do. Names such as Sexton, Kragthorpe and La Fortune are gone, but a lot of young players are waiting in the wings for their time in the spotlight. There will be a four- way battle at quarterback involving Jordan Sexton, Jon Werthen, Jake Fox and Cooper Gross. When the quarterback position is decided, he will be looking at Will Secrist or Cameron Cooper to hand the ball off to. When putting the ball in the air, the new quarterback will have a couple good targets in Zach Rogers and Harrison Evert. The defense looks to be a bit more settled than the offense, though there were significant losses on that side of the ball as well. On the defensive line, look for the strength to be coming off the ends with Stephen Brooks and Arda Bulak. Will Secrist and Harrison Evert will be handling the linebacker duties. Will Wright will be the leader on the defensive backs at strong safety, but the rest of the secondary is up for grabs with several players vying for starting spots. A young player hoping to see some playing time is James Eaton.
Moment in Rivalry History
Back in 2005, Holland Hall twins Grant and Kyle Detwiler led the Dutch to a last second win against the Commandos. Alex Gibson helped lead the Dutch from the quarterback position after an onside kick was recovered with 49 seconds left. The Dutch won 24-23 on the last play of the game when Grant Detwiler out jumped several Commando defenders for the TD.

Booker T. Washington Replacing stars Jordy Albert and Dominique Sells at quarterback, Isaac Bennett at running back and Tyler Lockett at wide receiver won’t be easy. The good thing about returning only two starters Hall said, is that there is plenty of competition for every position. Mitch Wilkins is one of those returning starters whom Hall expects a lot out of in 2011. The other true returning starter is Deontay Fields, a 6-1, 220-pound senior fullback, whom Hall calls a great blocker. Hollis Birmingham has been pushing Fields in practice. Delshon McFadden rushed for about 700 yards last season, getting the time late in the year. Jared Collins will take on a great role at wide receiver with the graduation of Tyler Lockett. Alex Thompson had a good offseason and will be joined on the offensive line by Mason Xiffmith (6-5, 285) and Dillon Darling. Jarvis Hinson returns to start at the mike linebacker spot for the third year. He was the team’s second leading tackler last year with 139 tackles. Joining him at linebacker is Mike Evans, who brings great speed to the position. Dominique is another athletic linebacker whom Hall expects good things.
East Central
Armed with a 2,000-yard passer a year ago in John McDavid, Cardinals coach Travis Hill expects to put up huge numbers once again. The Cardinals have a stable of running backs in William Goree and Malachi Neal. “It’s their turn, they need to grow up and show it,” Hill said. Stanyon Taylor is a flyer at the wide receiver spot. Hill will look to get the ball into the speedy Taylor’s hands in multiple ways. Arkansas and Tulsa are both keeping close tabs on offensive guard Derrick Crawford. Tyler Golden will play the opposite guard spot. Both are talented blockers.
Hill has a pair of D-1 hopefuls on defense in Jevonte Cross at linebacker and Damian Gibson at defensive end. Cross (6-2, 240, Sr.) was one of the state’s top tacklers a year ago with 195. He also had five sacks. Hill likes the leadership aspect Cross brings to the defense. Gibson (6-4, 240, Sr.) also splits time at tight end. A blue-chipper, Gibson is on the radar of Oklahoma, Arkansas and a host of other schools after recording 109 tackles last year.
At linebacker, the Cards will look to Kimmie Carson and Latrius McGoy, who talented athletes who didn’t log a ton of time last year.

In 2004, Felix Jones of Washington scored six TDs and accounted for 294 total yards in a 42-35 overtime thriller over the Cardinals. Randy and Ricky Palmer accounted for all five TDs for the Cardinals and Justin Fuselier helped lead the Hornets from the quarterback position.

OOLOGAH Head coach Brandon Craig says, “We want a high-tempo, aggressive passing game and a solid running game.” That attack is led by quarterback Zach Cantwell. Cantwell has plenty of targets to choose from including Tyler Brunk and Dalton Barnes. Running back Blade Cantwell is solid in the backfield and tough to bring down. Up front the Mustangs did graduate some size and talent, but return big man Sam Noble. Only a junior, Noble is already being talked about in college circles and should have an outstanding season.
BLADE CANTWELL
Cantwell gets the nod at linebacker with Kole Koenig and JW Thomas. This set of triplets are solid run stoppers and love to pressure the quarterback. They have some help on line with Aaron Thompson, who is a technically sound D-lineman who loves to force his way into the action. Justin Cole will play in the secondary alongside several players vying for a starting role.
CLAREMORE
Chase Talbert leads a group of seven returning starters for the Zebras. Everything begins and ends with the senior who rushed for over 1,400 yards last year. Joining him in the backfield is sophomore Matt Whatley at quarterback. “Matt runs a 4.5 in the 40,” Zebras coach Rob Gilbreath said. “He was our starting catcher in baseball. He’s a great athlete. In addition to Talbert, Whatley has plenty of experience around him. Tre Dunlap brings size and speed to the wide receiver and free safety positions. Chris Sczinski filled in for Talbert some last year and rushed for 190 yards against East Central. The offensive line is led by a trio of returning starters in Brandon McCullough, Dylan Foxworth and Cale Pierce.
After playing the linebacker position at 150 pounds last season, Jordan Cunningham has added 30 pounds for the upcoming campaign. The leading tackler back from last year with 149, Cunningham spent a lot of the offseason in the weight room. He could also help the Zebras at flanker. Senior Jamie Robertson brings leadership to the secondary as a returning starter. Cord Monaco turned some heads in spring workouts after not playing last season. He will join Cunningham at linebacker. Also expected to see time at linebacker is Bryson Short. The defensive line is led by junior Aaron Patterson.

Later that season Grubbs led 3A in passing and the Mustangs to a second consecutive state championship.

It simply doesn’t get any better than this. The Coweta Tigers and Wagoner Bulldogs have been going at it for decades. The Wagoner County rivalry has seen its fair share of drama, fights, fantastic finishes, and bizarre results. Wagoner holds a 28-24-1 since the rivalry ensued in 1922. After a two-year hiatus in 2008-2009, it came back with a vengeance last season in the 35-21 Bulldog win.

Gone is running back Clint Keel and quarterback Trevor Sumpter. The duo combined for nearly 2,000 yards of offense and 26 touchdowns. But there is plenty of talent waiting to step up, said head coach Bubba Burcham, who begins his fourth season as head coach at Coweta. Hayden Holmes, cousin of Sumpter, will take over the offensive reins at quarterback. Holmes throws both the intermediate and deep pass. A little quicker than Sumpter, Holmes will be a dual threat to run. Jakeem Johnson was Keel’s back-up last season. The speedy Johnson is the younger brother of Tyler, who played professional baseball before joining Oklahoma State’s football team last year. The Tigers have a pair of dandy offensive linemen in senior 300-pounders Jordan Jones and Dakota Hoover. Jones is 6-3, 315 and Hoover stands in at 5-foot-11, 300. Randall Smith is a 6-foot-1, 180-pound senior capable of stretching the field for the Tigers
Despite graduation losses from last year’s 13 win campaign, coach Dale Condict believes that 2011 could be a special season. Six starters will return on offense to provide plenty of scoring even with the adjustment in playing style of quarterback Taylor Bosco. Jeremy Applegate, a tough runner with speed who has more than 1100 career yards rushing and 10 TDs will team with Jimmy Carter in the backfield. Wagoner will continue to showcase a talented group of receivers including the fastest player in Class 4A Kevin Peterson, and Travontae Walters. Up front a trio of two-year starters including Marc Scroggins, Heath Wilson, and Daniel Brown provide plenty of muscle and size.
Burcham’s 4-3 defensive set will be built around returning starters Zack Dobbins, Eli Rupe, Dakota Ezell and Ty Daniels. Rupe is a hard-hat guy with 60 tackles a year ago. The senior defensive end comes ready to work every day, Burcham said. Ezell will start for the third consecutive year at the other defensive end spot where he registered 74 tackles last season. He finished second in the state powerlifting competition and is explosive off the line. Daniels was the team’s second leading tackler last year with 93. Burcham calls him a downhill player, always chasing down running backs. He will be joined at linebacker by Meadows, a back-up linebacker who will get the start at outside backer.
DEFENSE “This could be the best defense we’ve had,” admitted Condict, who enters his 6th year with a 62-16 record. Applegate, a Division I prospect with a total of 270 career tackles, anchor the linebacker corps alongside two other starters, Beau Barton, who recorded 62 tackles in 2010 and T.J. Ponds, who made 66 stops including 16 tackles for loss. Heath Wilson joins Daniel Brown at defensive end. Wagoner returns four starters in the secondary featuring hard-hitting safeties Bosco and Carter to man up with Peterson.

The Highway 97 Rivalry has not been what it used to be, but the two west Tulsa schools are always good for an early season brawl. You have to be from Sapulpa or Sand Springs to understand the dislike one another have for each other. It has been a while since both teams were relevant in talks of Class dominance, but the rivalry is still one of the best in Eastern Oklahoma. Sapulpa upended Sand Springs in last year’s contest to get head coach Mile Gottsch introduced to the rivalry.
Sapulpa Seniors Levi Pickering and Trevor Hall will fill the void left by Kendall Davis who transferred to Union. “They’re both special receivers,” Gottsch said. “We’ve got 15 seniors who played a lot as juniors. We had a great off-season and we feel like we’ll be better.” Devin Smith returns at running back after rushing for 300-plus yards a year ago. Tyler Williams is also back at quarterback. As a junior, he completed 62 percent of his passes (169-of-274) for more than 1,900 yards and 19 touchdowns. Gottsch looks to build Sapulpa’s offense around 6-foot-2, 240-pound senior center Massey Barnett. Seniors Chase Duke and Kegan Fox are bookend defensive ends. The Chieftains return three in the secondary in Josh Fleet and Lane Youngblood at the safety positions and Austin Feathers at the cornerback position. Jacob Bulman has been tabbed as the team’s kicker while Trevor Hall will most likely handle the punting chores.
Sand Springs
The return of three-year starter Darrack Harger at quarterback and a trio of junior wide receivers in Cody Hilderbrandt, Chase Lane and Harger’s younger brother, Matt. Richard DeHart and Ramond McLaurin will both see playing time at running back. Often both could be in the same backfield, the coach said. Tyler Bowden and Justen Duncan are the only holdovers from last year’s offensive line. Also back in the fold for his senior year is 6-3, 240-pound Joey Tilson, who should help on the offensive line. Tilson missed his junior year to attend the math and science academy. The key to Sand Springs’ 3-4 defense begins with a trio of linebackers in seniors Luke Owens, Jordan Winans and Spencer Haff. Jordan Winans, a senior, will likely join the linebacking crew at the outside spot. Luke Owens, another senior, could split time at defensive end and linebacker. Haff moved into the district from Owasso and will see his first action this year. Kinard also projects Haff to see time at fullback. Bottom line, the Sandites return a ton of kids from last year’s squad, many of whom got a lot of playing time.
Moment in Rivalry History
In 2008 Johnny Deaton led the Sandites to a Halloween win 48-13 with five TDs on the ground and another throwing. The win clinched a playoff birth for the Sandites in 2008 and marked another incredible game for Deaton in his junior campaign.

For nearly two decades, the Tigers couldn’t figure out how to beat the Redskins. Losing 16 straight times before upending the Redskins in the 2007 regular season matchup. The Skins defeated the Tigers in the semifinals in 1999 and again in 2008. And no one can forget the 52-3 thrashing the Redskins put on the Tigers in the 6A title game in 2002. Both communities back up to one another and with former long-time Union coach Steve Spavital at the BA helm, the rivalry has become even more intriguing. Perhaps the most disappointing moment of the rivalry is the fight that broke out in 1989’s match up that saw the Redskins win on their home field.
Broken Arrow Zack Mills inherits the quarterback position. Replacing Archie Bradley won’t be easy. Bradley completed 148-of-246 passes for 1,980 yards. But Mills is a gamer. Battling for the running back position is junior Cameron Wrenn and sophomore Devon Thomas. Wrenn averaged 7.3 yards per carry (960 yards on 132 carries) working in the backfield and looks to step up and be the playmaker for the Tigers. Tight end Zac Veatch is back after catching 21 passes for 457 yards. Already he has received offers from many colleges. Ezell Ware IV, nicknamed “Quad” because he wears No.4, can play a multitude of positions. Spavital definitely wants to have Ware at wide receiver and safety. Linebacker Will McDonald is the feature defender in Spavital’s 4-3 defense. McDonald is the top tackler back from a year ago with 53 tackles. Spavital said McDonald is up to the task of replacing Jon Coleman, who graduated. Nose guard Jeremy Gunter might be a bit smallish for the position but he’s quick. Seniors Levi Coplin Michael Walker and Mason Mullings will bring experience to the secondary.
Union
The Redskins have had the Tigers number for a long time and look to continue it with the quarterback play of junior Hunter Atiyia. Kendal Holmes transfers from Sapulpa and will fill a big hole left by graduated Stephon Weaver and Christian Hood at receiver. Kendall Holmes will be back at running back and will be a goo reliable solution for the Redskin offense. On defense, Kirk Fridrich’s scheme will see four-year starter Blace Walser in the thick of things for the Skins at linebacker. Fridrich has done such a wonderful job developing young coaches and will be filling in some spots on the assistant coaching side but has a great mentality for working with new coaches.

Is there a rivalry that’s been more heated than this one in recent memory? Don’t get us wrong, it’s everyone’s competitive nature to want to win, but when these two get together in any sport, emotions run high and the fans are usually treated to a great game, regardless of the field, court or mat.
Berryhill Head coach Pat Harper is ready for the season to get underway and is ready to turn his offense loose. Adam and Aaron Dolan are a pair of brothers that bring that hard-nosed style of play Berryhill is known for. Adam gets the nod at running back, while Aaron could start at tight end. Justin Tomlinson (6-0, 210, Sr.) will play fullback, but it’s his defensive play that has college recruiters taking a long hard look. Zach Jackson (6-2, 175, Jr.) will guide the offense after his sophomore campaign when he threw for 752 yards. Look for Derrick Kennedy (6-3, 190) to become one of the main targets for Jackson in the passing game. With Tomlinson starting at linebacker the area of focus this offseason has been the defensive secondary. Logan Million returns for his senior season as one of the secondary starters, but the coaching staff is looking for other players to step up. Adam Dolan appears to be returning to his safety position on defense. Andrew Garrell and Jeremy Smith will anchor the defensive line for coach Harper.
Cascia Hall
Everyone knows head coach Joe Medina will have his team prepared and ready to play in any environment. Offensively the Commandos will have a balanced attack that features passing game that will stretch the field and soften the opponents defense for the running game. Defensively look for the Commandos to swarm to the football and create opportunities for the offense. For a complete breakdown of the Commandos offense and defense, refer to rivalry #2.

When it comes to the Berryhill vs. Cascia Hall rivalry, every coach, player and fan of both teams will have their calendars circled in anticipation. Fans of the game really took notice in 2004 when Berryhill won a state title. But like most rivalries, Cascia Hall stepped up to the challenge and brought how their own gold ball in 2007. In recent history Cascia Hall held an undefeated streak that Berryhill attempted to break, but were unsuccessful. Both teams are expected to have playoff caliber teams so look for another great game in the Berryhill vs. Cascia Hall rivalry. AMU OG NU TS HT Y2 E0 A1 R1

Edison The Eagles will start the 2011 campaign with Gabe Goza (5-11, 180, Jr.) at the helm. Goza is a quick and elusive runner who’s been called to action to the lead the team. Paris Edwards (5-8, 155, Sr.) is a dual threat option to score as a running back or a wide out. Edwards and Goza combine to make a strong one-two punch on offense. Also look for Josh Hooks and Korey Draper at wide receiver. The offensive line is solid as well with Michael Marroquin and Jacob Tyler. Defensively Josh Jones (6-3, 240, Sr.) could put his stamp on this team as one of the best defensive lineman in the state. If Jones lives up to the potential you could be hearing about this kid on signing day. Marlon Scott leads a solid group of linebackers that will also feature Jordan Wilson. Defensive tackle Daniel Parker (6-0, 300, Jr.) is a hard player to handle for any offensive line. Look for Parker to plug the middle and force teams to test the waters on the outside where they will find Jones and Scott. Eznede Momodu should increase his tackles from last season as teams will probably run away from Jones.
Memorial
Calvin Rosenthal (5-9, 175, Sr.) moves from the corner position on defense to the starting quarterback job on offense. With 4.5 speed, Rosenthal has the talent to get the job done and should give opponents loads of trouble. TraVior Walker (5-10, 185, So.) will get the nod at running back along with Kejuante Austin (5-11, 190, So.). Both players are capable of big plays. Also look for Jermaine Rathod and Courtney Ortiz at wide receiver. Chris Turner joins the team after transferring from Nathan Hale. Turner could get the start at center or play some nose guard. Novis Cullom (6-3, 285, Jr.) is expected to be the starter at nose guard and in some circles is becoming one player the coaches are starting to talk about at the next level. Josh Smalls and Julian Montes are two players the coaching staff if expecting to have major impacts on the defensive front. Overall the defense is set up to have a good season. Look for the secondary to answer some questions early as a few underclassmen step up, mature and become the players coach Daniels wants and expects at Memorial.

Cleveland Junior quarterback J. Ballard can flat-out play, throwing for more than 1,400 yards and 14 TDs in 2010 as a sophomore. Eric Gallay and Phillip Spess didn’t put up monster stats, but will be stepping up to take on the load at the receiver position and will provide great targets for Ballard. Frankie Mackey is in the same boat and has not had an opportunity to shine yet, but Anderson likes him. Tigers are loaded up front with Dustin Malloy and Eric Sheets returning alongside Logan Schultz. “We return eight starters and we are excited about what we can do on offense,” said coach Dale Anderson. “It will be fast, fun and exciting.” The defensive line will be a key component to the 4-3 scheme of the Tigers. Malloy and Sheets will join Gene Reynolds to create a lot of problems for opposing offenses. Tyler Jones will be manning things at linebacker and Gallay and Spess will also have an interest on the back end along with Tristan McClain.
Hominy
The Bucks have a well-rounded team this season, and are senior-laden. Running back Alick Ham returns alongside fellow running back Cody Pinkteron. With Daniel Mullins taking over as quarterback, the Bucks offense should be a little more balanced this season. Mullins got some play time last season, but this season he’s looking to step up and lead the team. Fullback Austin Jones and wide receiver Blake Bohner will provide some much needed coverage. Talon Miles will be a leader for the offensive linemen and help solidify the offense. The boys will be doing double duty on the defensive line, as well. Coach Scott Harmon said one of the defenses main goals was to work harder at tackling and get better tackles this season. With Miles as nose guard, the Bucks defense is looking to force their opponents into a faster paced game with lots of tackling. Pinkerton and Jones will lead the way as linebackers while Ham will play defensive back. They have a tough non-district schedule, which should help prepare them for the district games and the playoffs.

Bishop Kelley vs. Bixby The Rural vs. Private rivalry was intense during the time spent in Class 5A with Kelley. The two teams no longer play each other but it would re-ignite a great matchup.
Victory Christian vs. Metro Christian
The two schools have different philosophies on their enrollment and those difference bleed over onto the football field. Only about two miles apart, the two schools get after it, but will not see each other on the schedule again this year.
Booker T. Washington vs. Hale
Known as one of the best rivalries in the 60’s and 70’s, the two urban Tulsa powerhouses have been credited with selling out Skelly Stadium in the early 70’s while Washington won the state title in ‘71 and ‘73 and Hale won in ‘72.

Are you and your teenager looking for a challenge this Fall? The Tulsa Rowing Club Juniors are looking for 8th grade and high school athletes to join their nationally recognized team. To kick start this coming year’s program, the team is hosting two recruitment weeks August 15th to the 19th and August 29th to September 2nd.
Our team has grown from ten athletes in 2002 to around 60 athletes in just a few years. The mission of the club is to develop rowing in the region and provide access to a sport that is relatively new to Oklahoma but is growing rapidly.
Rowing is a challenging sport because it teaches discipline and perseverance as you build toward a long-term goal. In addition, as a rowing team, you learn to trust each other and every member of the crew is a vital part of the team. The club’s coaches work hard to teach each athlete the correct technique and then the crew works together to make the rowing shell (boat) go as fast as possible on the race course.
48
The sport’s defining moment is the point when the coach bids farewell to a crew going to race. The boat rows away from the dock and the athletes execute their race plan and have to make all of the decisions themselves. Since there is very little hand holding, young student athletes soon learn to become independent.

“We have a excellent program because we are working with some really great kids and families. We trust our athletes with very expensive equipment when we send them away on the water to race. Ultimately, the club places a great deal of responsibility on the kids and they are certainly up to the challenge”, says TRC Juniors Head Coach Neil Bergenroth.
Our student athletes practice up to six days a week. The team travels across the nation during the season that starts in August and ends in June. Our crews from the program have earned the right to compete at the largest race in the nation, the Head of the Charles regatta in Boston. The club provides many opportunities for Tulsa’s youth and has worked hard to provide the right training environment to enable athletes to take advantage of the opportunity to develop personal fitness, to be recruited for college rowing teams, in addition to developing a passion for a life long sport. As an added bonus, it gives the chance for student athletes from different high schools to build relationships with each other while working towards personal and team maturity.
Fall Schedule: Aug 15-19 - Basic Training for New Recruits Aug 29-Sep 2 - Basic Training for New Recruits Oct 1-2 - Head of the Oklahoma, OKC, OK Oct 22-23 - Head of the Charles, Boston, MA Oct 29 - Head of the Colorado, Austin, TX Nov 6 - Wichita Frostbite, Wichita, KS
Team Coaches: Adam Stoermer, James Simmons, Micah Hartwell, Sara Younger and Head Coach Neil Bergenroth. For more information on the TRC Juniors and to sign up for the August recruitment weeks, visit the club’s website at www.tulsajuniorsrowing.org.

For thirty years, the EOOC Coaches BBQ has been a celebration of a new football season. 2011’s event was one to remember.
T
he 30th annual EOOC Coaches BBQ took place Friday August 5th. For three decades the football coaches in Green Country have gathered prior to the opening of fall football practices. The event started off with less than a dozen coaches and now hosts over 500. The dedication of the EOOC physicians toward the education and implementation of sports medicine in Northeast Oklahoma is reflective of the BBQ’s success. With beverages, great BBQ, Dixieland music, and giveaways, a good time was had by all.
EOOC’s Larry Egge, who manages the BBQ, was the custodian of a wonderful event that saw Eastern Oklahoma high school and college coaches alike. “This is such an awesome event. Every year we have such a good time and it is always great to see the area coaches before the kickoff to the season,” said KTBZ 1430am Program Director Chris Plank. 1430am broadcast live from the event and can be heard as a podcast on 1430thebuzz.com.
“The care EOOC gives to patience, athletes, and everyday people has always been close to my heart,” said VYPE Publisher Austin Chadwick. “I have been cared for and operated on many times during my career in high school football and college football at TU. Because of their care and the flat-out skill of the orthopedic physicians, I am living a normal, pain-free life after a career of football injuries.” All EOOC doctors were present with their families for the 30th annual BBQ, giving coaches and administrators an opportunity to know the great doctors at EOOC on a personal level. 50

Health
M
ost sports require a high level of strength development, which plays a large role in achieving success. Athletes should focus on these aspects during their off-season and summer training sessions where there is an absence of team practices. A few basic principles to any strength training program are: technique before weight, strength before power, controlled reps, recovery is equally as important as training and strength = slow reps, explosiveness = speed reps. Athletes must remember to never compromise technique for weight. This leads to injury and the creation of bad habits. They must first focus on getting the technique of the lift down for only then can the weight increase when their technique is sound. Maintaining leg strength is crucial during the season as athletes go through the rigors of practice, games, and the stretch of a long season. Cleans are the most important lift as they correlate to every sport better than any other lift. They are great for hip strength and explosiveness. The foundation for most athletes’ abilities rests in their core strength; this includes abs, lower back, and the hip region. Optimally, athletes need to incorporate core exercises daily in their program. Most athletes make their biggest gains through the summer; the goal then shifts to keeping that strength. In-season training requires a different training volume and intensity though. Athletes do not want to backslide or stop strength training during the season or they will soon see all of their off-season and summer efforts wasted. When strength training suffers during the season, athletes’ strength as well as their enthusiasm suffers also. The extra demands forced on the body during any season necessitate increased rest and recuperation, so athletes definitely face a danger of overtraining. The number one goal of an in-season training program should be maintaining the improvements generated in the off-season and through the summer. Consideration should be made to prevent injuries and soreness in the gym. A warm-up routine is recommended before
starting the strength phase of any workout, whether it is hurdles, speed ladders, quick steps, etc. An in-season training program should consist of the following low volume training where the emphasis is working to maintain the athletes’ strength levels without causing any unnecessary demands as well as compound exercises, which are multi-joint lifts that will encompass all major muscle groups with a minimum number of sets. By training the whole body athletes can train at a higher frequency ensuring adequate muscle stimulation without the need to spend hours in the gym training separate muscle groups. When implementing a total body routine, athletes must make sure to reduce the volume per training session to manage energy levels and avoid overtraining. The program needs to be adjustable in volume, intensity, and exercise selection. Splitting the in-season training routine into macro cycles is a great way to provide change with volume, intensity, and exercises, plus it will keep athletes interested in the weight room and confidence levels high. For example, a sample high school football in-season strength training guide could be broken down into 4 cycles. For More information on this story, please visit VYPEOK.com

Dutch
Field Hockey
Head Coach Leah Scott will begin her second year leading the Dutch field hockey program. It will be a young, but very athletic team. The Dutch will be lead by seniors Lily Swab, Caroline Gold, Eryn McCarver and Allie Johnson. The Dutch will begin their season over Labor Day weekend as they travel to St. Louis to participate in the Gateway Field Hockey Classic that will host 72 field hockey teams from 10 different states.
Volleyball
The volleyball program is coming off its best season in school history with 22 wins last year and a fifth place conference finish. The Dutch will be led by a strong group of seniors in Claire Hicks, Sophie Jefferson, Jamie Rice, Saskia Romero and Ashlyn Terrell. High expectations and a very challenging schedule await this team, but Head Coach Paige Arnold believes this mature group is ready for the challenge.
Cross Country
After a strong finish at SPC last fall, both the girls and boys cross country teams have trained all summer to build upon the success. The cross country team will be lead by seniors Mitch Hill, Cindy Saliba and Beth Cruickshank. Head coach Greg Spencer believes there is some young talent emerging in both programs and he feels both teams will be ready to challenge at SPC in November.
Football
Losing 19 seniors from a 10-1 finish in 2010, the Dutch will definitely have some young new faces seeing varsity action for the first time. Seniors Stephen Brooks and Arda Bulak will anchor upfront for the Dutch, Will Wright returns at free safety and William Secrist will return in his role at linebacker and fullback. Head coach Tag Gross begins his 12th season at Holland Hall and hopes the tough non-conference schedule prepares this team for a run in the SPC. The Dutch kick off the season at home on August 26th as they host Fort Worth Trinity Valley School.
Cheer
Coach Sarah Cox is starting her seventh year at Holland Hall, and17th overall after a ten-year stint at Jenks. This years cheer squad started practicing the end of May and have been preparing all summer to be ready for the start of football season. Senior Carly Chalmers will be leading the team this year as they prepare for regionals in November looking to win a third National AUGUST 2011
