Prior to a grueling preseason basketball practice, VYPE caught up with Kabree Edgmon of Fort Gibson High School to answer questions for Triple Play. After getting her answers, we posed the same questions to Kabree’s teammates Ali Christie and Cailey Cunningham. Which of the two Lady Tigers seniors best-matched answers with Kabree? The 2017 senior who admits her favorite shot is a made 3-point basket, Kabree Edgmon leads the scoring charts for the Lady Tigers basketball team averaging 13.4 points per game. Before continuing her goal to win the Class 4A state championship in 2017, Edgmon’s talents on the basketball court have earned her a scholarship to play basketball at Northeastern State University. While she admits being a sports junkie, Edgmon turns to Netflix to relax after every game enjoying her favorite movie, Spirit. Known to her friends as Kabe, she enjoys picking a tune on the guitar while singing country music tunes. Edgmon’s love for animals will eventually lead her to a dream career as a veterinarian.

OKMULGEE BULLDOGS

Okmulgee Bulldogs Head Coach: Johnny Dreyer 2015-16 Record: 18-8 Assistant Coach: Grant Proctor

Outlook The return of four starters from last year’s 18win campaign, the Bulldogs have plenty of talent and leadership to create a special season as Okmulgee will compete in Class 3A this season. Topping the playmakers is VYPE Top 100 shooting guard Jimell Tate (6-0, Sr.) who led the scoring charts last year totaling 21.3 points per game along with Michael Simmons (6-2, Sr.) who averaged 16.7 points, 4.6 rebounds while dishing our 3.5 assists per game. The final member of the Okmulgee’s “3-Dog Night” is William Shirley (6-3, Sr.), whose athleticism and determination are hard to defend. Head coach Johnny Dreyer anticipates the efforts of Andrew Robertson (6-3

Sr.), who averaged 7.2 points per contest and Devion Nelson (6-3, Jr.) who chipped in 6.2 point per game to allow the Bulldogs to push the tempo end to end. Keishawn Gardner (6-5, So.) and Bryson Jordan (6-3, Sr.) has the game plan on track for a special season. “The word’s out on Jimell, Michael and William,” said Dreyer noting the playmaking highlights of the Bulldogs top producers last year. “We can go small and fast or big and fast and still accomplish our game plan by turning defensive pressure into offensive production. We expect to be more than just in the discussion for a trip to OKC next March.” Okmulgee Lady Bulldogs Head Coach: Kevin Rucker 2015-16 Record: 1-16 Assistant Coaches: Glendell Threat, Joy Jackson

Outlook With the return of five starters this season, the Lady Bulldogs are determined to force opponents to read the sign “Beware of the Dogs”. The experience gained on the hardwood by Laura Mason (5-8, Sr.), Mykayla Young (5-9,Jr.), Tierney Gardner (6-3, Jr.), Kailey Ward (5-6, So.) and Tionna Lawrence (5-10, Jr.) has developed a determined lineup that will get an added boost from Makayla Penn (5-10, Sr.), Stazia Truelove (5-8, Sr.), Sequoia Scott (5-9, Sr.) along with Ariel Behn (6-0, Jr.), and Kiara Jones (5-10, Jr.).

Head coach Kevin Rucker anticipates that his squad is going to surprise opponents taking advantage of height with four players standing 5-10 or taller and quickness from a pesky group of guards. “In all aspects of the game, we’re much improved. The talent level of this group is solid and now we just have to prove it to everyone else.”

BEGGS GOLDEN DEMONS

Beggs Lady Golden Demons Head Coach: Bunyan Johnson 2015-16 Record: 23-6

Outlook: After reaching the Big House last year, the Lady Golden Demons are eager for a return to the Class 3A state tournament as Beggs welcomes back two starters plus a lineup filled with players who gained valuable playing experience in last season’s 26-3 campaign. Raven Blackbear (5-10, Jr.) who averaged 11.7 points and 9.1 rebounds along with Cheyenne Johnson (5-9, Jr.) who totaled 5.3 points a year ago will join forces with Diamonique Kennedy (6-0, Sr.) who added 8.3 points and 6.2 rebounds a year ago. Mattie Blackbear (5-3, So.) who

10

contributed 8.2 points per game as a freshman returns along with Chyniqua Johnson (5-4, Jr.), Autumn Blackbear (5-3, Fr.), Chiawna Johnson (5-10, Jr.), Moiya Phillips (5-4, So.), Kaitlyn Couch (6-0, So.) and Malorie Wilburn (5-8, Jr.) bolster the depth for coach Bunyan Johnson’s squad. “We’re still a young team,” notes Johnson who enters his eighth campaign as head coach. “This year it’s a group of girls with a lot of playing time when it counts that should be a plus. We’ll go as far as our defense will carry us.” Beggs Golden Demons Head Coach: Jordan Nagel 2015-16 Record: 16-12

The excitement building inside the Golden Demons Dome revolves around the opportunities for success as Beggs welcomes Jordan Nagel to the head coaching position with two returning starters and a roster built around defense and motion offense. The guard duo of Ira Blackbear (6-0, Sr.), who averaged 13.2 points per game last seasn and Dax McElroy (6-0, So.) spearhead the perimeter

scoring chances while the presence of Chris Waltman (6-7, Sr.) inside providing a tower of power in the lane. Nagel’s motion offense will create challenges for opponents with the efforts of Stacy Phillips (5-10, Jr.), Shaiden Jordan (5-11, So.), Mateo Sanders (5-10, So.) and Jaiden Grayson (511, So.) sparking the results while Chandler Stanton (6-2, So.), Dalton Spring (6-3, So.) and Jared Sutter (6-2, So.) strengthen the front line action. “With Ira back as our leading scorer, we will gain from his leadership and surround him with a lot of good young talent,” said Nagel. “Energy will be our key advantage that will give us the opportunity to be competitive every night.”

PRESTON PIRATES

KiKi Shields Preston Lady Pirates Head Coach: Jeff Weedn 2015-16 Record: 23-8

The Lady Pirates have multiple reasons to expect more than just another return to the Class 2A state tournament as head coach Jeff Weedn’s squad welcomes the return of two-time VYPE Top 100 standout KiKi Shields (6-0, Sr.). Shields continued her dominance averaging a double-double 23.6 points and 11.1 rebound standard prior to a knee injury last season. Sophmore guard Aiyonna Tecumseh (5-7, So.) who totaled 11.2 points per game as a freshman will be joined by Samantha Hack (5-7, Jr.), Silyn Jordan (5-9, Jr.), Marian Lewis (6-0, Jr.) giving Weedn’s lineup proven talent along with the bonus skills of Eunice Leach (5-7, Fr.), Ahmiah Tiger

HENRYETTA KNIGHTS

Henryetta Lady Knights Head Coach: Rick Duncan 2015-16 Record: 1-21

A pair of seniors will hopefully be one of the keys to an improved season for the Lady Knights in 2016. Sydney King (5-8, Sr.) and Raylyn Morrison (5-6, Sr.) are two of the five starters back for Henryetta this season. Also returning for the Lady Knights are Kim Hage (5-3, Jr.), Kaitlyn Clark (5-3, So.) and Danielle LaSarge (5-7, So.). Also back with some playing time experience for Henryetta are Briget Williams (5-7, So.) and Emily Potter (5-5, So.). Finding more firepower on offense will be a key for Henryetta as the lady

(5-3, Fr.), Abbie Long (5-6, Fr.), Kaelyn Roberts (5-10, Fr.) and Anna Raley (5-6, Jr.). “KiKi is arguably the best player in Class 2A and Aiyonna’s shooting talents give us range to score,” said Weedn. “Combined all together and we’ve got a chance to be in the chase for gold.” Preston Pirates Head Coach: Dirk Walden 2015-16 Record: 26-7

After back-to-back Class 2A state finals appearances, the Pirates are determined to leave the Big House with the gold ball this season. The Pirates lineup remains talented including VYPE Top 100 standout Koby Love (6-6, Sr.), a four year starter that has been a constant force inside averaging 17.4 points and 8.7 rebounds per game last year. Three year starter Kameron Mayfield (6-0, Sr.) returns to his point guard position where he distributed 7.2 assists per contest in addition to scoring 8.1 points per game. C.J. Cochran (6-0, Jr.), who average 6.5 points last season will be joined by J. Scot Fife (6-1, Jr.), Cace Love (6-1, So.) Juan Zavala (6-1, Jr.), Sammy Dailey (5-9, Jr.) and Marquelon Johnson (5-9, Jr.). “We have spots to fill because of graduation losses,” notes Walden. “With Koby and

Knights only scored an average of 26 points a game last year. And if his team isn’t already young enough, coach Rick Duncan will have to rely on a group of freshmen to shore up his bench led by Kim Fowler and Baleigh Nye. Duncan, now in his second season as the boss of the Lady Knights, will need to call on the experience of his 40 plus years of coaching to find the right combination to excite this group of youngsters into getting the Lady Knights back on the winning track. Henryetta Knights Head Coach: Tim Gillespie 2015-16 Record: 13-14

A trio of returning starters will carry the hopes of the Knights in 2016 as they look to get back on the winning side of the ledger. Two seniors will provide some needed leadership for Henryetta in forward Kalil Lewis (6-3, Sr.) and point guard Darious Tiger (6-0, Sr.). Rejoining Tiger in the forecourt will be Avery Moore (6-0, Jr.). Another junior, Jarrett Day, will also provide some experience for

Koby Love Kameron back on the court, we’ll still have the talent and leadership needed to chase another ticket to the state tournament next March.”

the Knights and after that it’s a group of youngsters to fill in the starting lineup and provide help off the bench. That group includes Colten Wion (6-1, So.), Drew Brown (6-0, So.), Jordan Knox (6-0, So.) and Jared Fife (6-0, So.). A lot will fall on the shoulders of the seniors Lewis and Tiger to spur on the youth of this team, but Gillespie, now in his 15th year at Henryetta, is sure to find some tricks in his coaching bag to get this team a little further down the playoff road in 2016.

DEWAR DRAGONS

Dewar Lady Dragons Head Coach: Todd Been 2015-16 Record: 15-11 Last year’s growing pains are this year’s reasons to expect for the Lady Dragons with five starters plus the impact of the sixth man returning for coach Todd Been, who started five freshmen most of last year. Savannah Been (5-7, So.) who averaged 13.4 points per game is the playmaker at guard along with Staejah Mack (5-5, So.) while Morgan Britt (5-8, So.) who tallied 10.1 points per game will be joined by Deljah Jackson (5-8, Sr.) at forward while KiKi Carter (5-10, So.)

provides a solid presence at post. Ashton Been (5-7, So.), Noe Corbin (5-8, Fr.), Skylar Randall (5-8, Fr.), Jordan Uzzell (5-7, Fr.) and Dareian Weaver (5-7, So.) will provide

depth. “We’re still young but talented. This group survived a baptism by fire last year and are now eager to prove they’ve taken their game to a higher level,” notes Been. “The lessons we learned in the playoffs will make us stronger this season.” Dewar Dragons Head Coach: Brett Thomas 2015-16 Record: 13-11

The Dragons begin this year with two

starters returning plus a roster filled with last year’s role players that are ready to step into the prime time situations for head coach Brett Thomas. The lineup of talent that Thomas expects to deliver success in the uptempo paced offense included a trio of guards including Jentry Brison (5-10, So.) and Rhett Whitlow (6-1, So.). Three seniors will be called upon to do work in the paint including Bryton Edmundson (6-3, Sr.), Matt Hicks (6-2, Sr.) and Trisdon Brownfield (510, Sr.). Adding to energy on the floor will be Dustin Blood (6-0, So.), Trevor Clingon (5-11, So.), Kelby Carter (5-9, Jr.). “Success will depend upon our ability to handle the basketball and play defense,” said Thomas. “We’re young and talented but still unproven. I think we’ve got a chance to be a pretty good ball club in time for the playoffs.”

MORRIS EAGLES season will be Lauren Lee (5-8, So.) and Jaci Ledford (5-8, Sr.). “Experience should be a plus for us this season,” notes head coach Jonathan Clay who begins his 13th season at Morris. “Last year’s rookies are this season’s veterans. Now we just have to take it to a higher level flight.”

Madyson Lewis Morris Lady Eagles Head Coach: Jonathan Clay 2015-16 Record: 21-6

The flight of the Lady Eagles continues to soar as four starters return from a 21-win campaign last season. Morris Eagles Head Coach: Levi Mooney 2015-16 Record: 7-16 With four starters returning, the Eagles hopes for a turnaround campaign are well defined including the post play of Brett Beard (6-4, Jr.) and perimeter guard contributions of Johnson Huynh (5-8, Jr.), who earned All-Conference honors last year as underclassmen. Head coach Levi Mooney will enter his third season on the bench relying upon the contributions of Tyler Arrington (5-9, Jr.), Thomas Drinnon (5-9, Sr.) and Bryson Buckley (6-0, So.) to boost the perimeter attack while Dillon Mattingly (6-3, So.) and Joe McBride (6-1, Fr.) bring skill to the front line efforts. PREVIEW 2016-2017

Johnson Huynh Devin Warren (5-8, Fr.), Gunner Clevenger (6-0, Sr.) and Trenton Kelley (5-8, Fr.) will be counted upon for added depth. “These kids spent the offseason working together to become a competitive unit,” notes Mooney. “Their efforts and determination to achieve will give us the opportunity to make some noise this season.”

OKEMAH PANTHERS

Okemah Lady Panthers Head Coach: Will Seymour 2015-16 Record: 19-10

The Lady Panthers have cause for optimism with the return of four starters from last year’s

19-win campaign. A pair of seniors including Camryn Fixico and Abby Haddox will take the reins for coach Will Seymour’s squad. Also expected to make a difference will be the guard trio of Makena Adams (Jr.), Morgan Bean (So.) and Lexi Wharton (Jr.) while Jacie Harelson (5-11, Jr.) will double with Fixico in the paint for scoring and rebounding combination. Nataiya Wilson, Madeline Coon, Faith Rogers and Cameron Duncan will be called upon to keep the Lady Panthers motor running at an uptempo pace. “We’ve got four starters back anchored by Camryn’s talents inside,” said Seymour. “When we’re able to put the pieces together, this group can cause plenty of challenges for the opponents. And, you have to be able to play ball on both ends of the court if you expect to win in Class 2A.”

The Panthers program has been in the state finals or area finals each of the last five seasons while compiling a 118-27 record to set the standard for success for the black and gold. And, despite only one returning starter C.D. Harjo (6-1, So.) who tallied 3.8 points and 3.4 rebounds as a freshman, coach Kale Simon is looking forward to seeing last year’s role players step into the spotlight. Coleton Hummingbird (5-9, Sr.) and Seth Harjo (5-11, Jr.) add solid talent in the rotation of guards along with Colton Roberts (6-0, Jr.). The ability to battle on the boards rests upon the efforts of Isaiah Francis (6-1, Jr.) and Matt Fullbright (6-2, So.). Jacob Rogers (5-11, Sr.), Austin Titsworth (6-2, Sr. and Tyler Acosta (6-1, Jr.) give Simon added depth. During the past five seasons, Okemah has also compiled a 66 Conference record of 48 wins and only one defeat. “After playing in the shadows of our success, these young men are ready to make a name for themselves,” said Simon. “WE have a tradition of success and have every intention of continuing that again this year.”

Katlyn Williamson (5-10, So.) at center and forward Brandi Smith (5-9, Fr.) while Savanna Zackery (5-5, Fr.), Aaliyah Drake (5-5, Fr.) and Lynzee Crawley (5-6, Fr.) offer talent with depth to the roster.

Head coach William Bencoma will also rely upon Tyson Micco (5-10, Jr.) and Jacob Stewart (5-8, Jr.) for instant energy in the guard rotation. “This year’s team has playmakers that know what’s needed to win,” notes Bencoma. “It’s experience plus confidence in their abilities that will provide us the opportunity to build upon last year’s success and be a challenger in time for the playoffs.”

WELEETKA OUTLAWS Weleetka Lady Outlaws Head Coach: 2015-16 Record: 10-13

Among the four seniors on this year’s roster expected to set the standard for success will be guards Abrianna Drake (5-8, Sr.), Rachelle Vanmeter (5-5, Sr.) and Marissa Walker (5-5, Sr.) along with forward Samantha Wise (5-9, Sr.). The dynamic duo of Claryssa Page (5-3, Jr.) and Taylor Vanmeter (5-5, So.) will share the point guard responsibilities. Adding to the front line size advantage will be

FORT GIBSON TIGERS Indian Capital Technology Center

“WHERE WINNING IS MORE THAN JUST A DREAM – IT’S A WAY OF LIFE” Tradition Never Graduates…especially when describing the winning ways achieved by the girls and boys basketball teams at Fort Gibson. And with their rosters filled with players that have been there before, winning remains a focus in the game plan for the Lady Tigers and Tigers in 20152017. Fort Gibson Lady Tigers Head Coach: Jerry Walker 2015-16 Record: 27-1

Last year the Lady Tigers roared to a 27-1 season without a single senior on the roster and the thought that coach Jerry Walker returns the entire group has Fort Gibson opponents looking for answers to try to deny the Lady Tigers a 13th straight trip to the Class 4A state tournament. A quartet of senior guards energize the scoring totals including Kabree Edgmon (5-6, Sr.) who averaged 13.4 points including averaging 43% from 3-point territory along with Ali Christie (5-10, Sr.) who averaged 8.2 points per contest with 3-point range plus

Shinkman averaged 8.7 points and 4.1 rebounds last year for the Bulldogs. Center Garrett Haddock (6-6, Sr.) brings good size and is a strong

rebounder. Patrick Curley (6-1, Jr.) returns from injury after a torn ACL in football last season while Dylan Mayfield (6-0, Jr.) will add depth at forward as well. Keep an eye on Jaevon Roberson (5-9, So.), an underclassmen at guard that will continue to develop as the season progresses.

INOLA LONGHORNS conference selection in the competitive Verdigris Valley Conference which speaks well to his athleticism. Caleb Mason (6-4, Sr.) will be the man in the middle for the Longhorns where his 64 percent field goal percentage should be a big boost for the Longhorns. Also back are Inola Longhorns starters Jordan Spurlock (5-10, So.) Head Coach: Clyde Barkley and Lance Jones (5-10, Jr.). The big 2015-16 Record: 10-17 question for the Longhorns will be effectiveness off the bench. Other than Even with four starters back, long-time senior Jacob Norman, there’s not much coach Clyde Barkley, entering his 39th experience in the remaining juniors year as head coach of the Longhorns, and sophomores. knows that his group may still struggle. “This will be a challenging year,” says Point guard Micah Bell (5-11, Jr.) with Barkley. “I like this group and I know an 11.2 point per game average will they will compete but we’re still an be the floor leader. Inola Lady Longhorns Head Coach: Todd Dixon 2015-16 Record: 12-15

Although there’s not a senior on the roster, coach Todd Dixon is relishing the upcoming season. One of the main reasons will be the return of guard Jo Harbison (5-4, Jr.). Harbison averaged 17 points per game last season and is quickly closing in on the 1000th point of her high school career in just her junior year. Rylee Bynum (5-7, Jr.) with a five point per game average will be a guard/forward type player. Also back for the 2016 campaign will be juniors Jackie Barrett, a speedy sharpshooter, and Bailey Edmonds. Dixon is hoping for quick adjustments from incoming freshmen Marley Eaves, Kelsie Roberts and Lillie Walker, who at 6-0 should offer some inside help for the Lady Longhorns.

VIAN WOLVERINES

The V stands for Vian…and for VICTORY. As the new basketball season begins, great expectations brewing for the Lady Wolverines and Wolverines and the Purple and Gold cagers seek more than just wins on the hardwood determined to reach the Big House in March. Vian Lady Wolverines Head Coach: Jordan Garner 2015-16 Record: 20-5 Assistant Coach: Anthony Porter

The Lady Wolverines will be looking to fill a void left by some talented seniors including Desiree Moon that took Vian to a pair of area tournaments and the state tournament in the past three years. But with Jordan Garner at the helm, the Lady Wolverines are always in the hunt. 2016 will see two all-conference starters

back for Vian which bodes well for their continued success. Addie Elbon (5-6, Sr.) and Cresha Taylor (5-7, Sr.), who combined for over 17 points and 14 rebounds per game average, will be called on to step up their pace on offense while providing the senior leadership necessary for success. Garner is also high on youngster Kaylee Teehee (5-4, Fr.) and Dia Jackson (5-10, Jr.) who contributed four points per game in 2015. Mylie Hughes will come off the bench again for Vian where she averaged just over two points per game last season. Tajon Moses (5-5, Jr.) and Starla Terrill (5-6, Jr.) will also be looked to for help off the bench. “We have three upperclassmen in Elbon, Taylor, and Jackson that helped us win 66 games over the past three years. I believe the combination of our experienced upper classmen and our athletic younger kids could allow us to have a successful season,” said Garner. Vian Wolverines Head Coach: Anthony Porter 2015-16 Record: 15-8 Assistant Coach: Jordan Garner

Coach Anthony Porter returns three allconference players to the fold for 2016 in hopes of taking the Wolverines to the next level of the playoffs. Leading the way will be power forward Javier Ramos (6-5, Jr.) who averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game last year. He’ll

be joined by returning starters Kaleb Glass (6-0, Jr.) who was also in double figures for the Wolverines with 10 points a game in 2015 and center Josh Bolin (6-2, Sr.), who netted an average of seven points per game and is expected to be one of the senior leaders of the team. The Vian bench should also be a factor with Iman Harrison (5-9, So.), Antonio Lyke (6-0, Sr.), Ben Spyres (6-2, So.) and Tyrus Wells all having seen floor time last season. Also expected to help out more this season will be Wolverine footballer “Tuk” Moses (5-8, Sr.) who was hurt last season. With a good nucleus of returning starters, some experienced depth off the bench and three strong senior leaders, Vian should be headed for the area playoffs and maybe beyond in 2016. photos by Vickie Tincher @vypelady

The Lady Ironheads missed her 23.7 points per game down the stretch last year but in the process got some valuable experience for the other starters, three of whom are now seniors including B.A. Reeb (3.3 ppg), Aryn Holybee (5.4 ppg) and Savannah Kerr (5.3 ppg). Also returning to dominate the wings will be Macayla Needham (6-1, So.) who contributed 6.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game for Eufaula last year. Adding some experienced help off the bench will be Morgan Parish (5-8, Jr.) plus a large crop of new comers. “We will have 11 freshmen going for us that are strong at every spot and will provide valuable minutes for us this year,” said head coach Laura Gragg. Eufaula Ironheads Head Coach: Brad Campbell 2015-16 Record; 5-19

Stigler Lady Panthers Head Coach: Jeff Walker 2015-16 Record: 13-13 Assistant Coaches: Moody Smith and Jim Parker

Shauntey Hays (5-6, Jr.) enters her third campaign as the team’s leading scorer after totaling 14.6 points and 6.3 rebounds per contest a year ago. A pair of seniors Madison Gilmore (5-6, Sr.) who chipped in 9.5 points and 7.5 rebounds and Adi Pacek (5-7, Sr.) who grabbed 2.8 steals in addition to her 8.0 scoring average compliment the rotation of guards while Sadie Quick (5-9, Jr.) battles the boards grabbing 4.3 rebounds and scoring 3.4 points per outing. Head coach Jeff Walker will turn to senior guard Mattie Rose (5-5, Sr.) along with Cali Parker (5-5, Jr.), Riley Calhoun (5-3, Jr.) and Unity McAlvain for added intensity on either end of the court. “With our returning experience, we’re getting a head start on achieving our goals,” notes Walker. “Last year’s newcomers are this season’s veterans and when combined with the younger kids, we have a chance to be a solid team.”

expectations of putting all the pieces together for a successful season for the Panthers. Graduation losses wiped out the starting rotation but also open the doors for new names to move into the spotlight this season. Among the experienced players returning to the hardwood will be guards Nathaniel Shaffer (6-3, Jr.), Peyton Henson (5-10, Jr.) and Lake McClary along with front line performers Kaeden Cloud (6-3, Jr.), Parker McAlvain (6-3, Jr.) and Jaxson McAlvain (6-4, Sr.) who returns after being sidelined with a knee injury last year. We want to take advantage of our size inside and play power basketball as well as defending the rim.”

SPIRO BULLDOGS

Spiro Lady Bulldogs Head Coach: Kayla Carrington 2015-16 Record: 18-5

Athleticism with game time experience will be an advantage for the Lady Bulldogs who welcome the return of four starters from last year’s 18win campaign while reaching the area finals, one step shy of the Class 3A state tournament. Shakyrah Gladness (6-1, So.) provides an intimidating factor inside on both ends of the floor evidenced by averaging a doubledouble 15.2 points and 10.3 rebounds plus 4.5 blocked shots per contest. Adding length and talent inside will by Abena Sey (5-9, Sr.) who totaled 8.3 rebounds on top of her 6.5 points last year. Quickness is another edge for coach Kayla Carrington’s lineup with a trio of guards Kaici Phillips (5-4, Sr.) who averaged 4.4 steals while

distributing 3.5 assists in addition to scoring 6.1 points will be joined by Hannah Tobler (5-8, Jr.) who created 3.7 steals and grabbed 5.5 rebounds from her guard position along with Jaycee Cox (5-5, So.). “We’re still young by most standards but we’re experienced,” said Carrington with a smile. “Our speed and athleticism allows us to force the tempo. We want to get up and down the court and create turnovers with pressure and convert them into transition baskets from start to finish.” Spiro Bulldogs Head Coach: Dustin Gist 2015-16 Record: 9-15

The pieces of the puzzle appear to fit together to provide the Bulldogs the opportunity to return to their winning ways. Five starters return to give head coach Dustin Gist an experienced

and talented lineup surrounded by an athletic supporting cast of players. Among the six seniors on this year’s roster Braedon Howard (6-4, Sr.) will again create challenges to defend inside where he totaled 14.4 points per game while grabbing 9.3 rebounds plus averaging two blocks per game while guard Deonte Reed (6-0, Sr.) expects to increase his production after contributing 10.3 points and 5.6 rebounds per game. Brent Stout (6-1, Sr.), who averaged 4.2 points and 4.8 rebounds will be joined by Toby Huff (6-1, Sr.) on the front line. Gist will rely upon Cade Blankenship (5-7, Jr.), Deontei Braggs (6-0, So.) and D’Karre Lynch (5-10, Sr.) to handle the point guard duties while Cedric Cobb (6-4, Jr.) adds another threat to score in the lane. Depth off the bench will get a boost with the efforts of Dylan Ridenour (5-10, Jr.) and Seth Haynes (5-9, Sr.) “We’ve got the opportunity to be a competitive team on an every night basis when the pieces fit together,” said Gist. x

THREE RIVERS BASKETBALL PREVIEW 2016-2017

HOWE LIONS

WE ARE HOWE Lady Lions and Lions Roar Toward Another Winning Season Nestled along Highway 59 in LeFlore county, the noise coming from the Lions cage continues to grow as the girls and boys basketball teams at Howe High School prepare for another venture to earn another ticket back to the Big House and the Class 2A state tournament. Howe Lady Lions Head Coach: Chris Brown 2015-16 Record: 25-5

With four starters returning from last year’s 25win campaign that included another berth in the state tournament, the Lady Lions are drawing statewide attention as one of the teams to beat in all of Class 2A girls’ basketball. The dynamic duo of Jalei Oglesby (5-7, So.) whose 17.2 point average spearheaded the offense that averaged 63 points per game last season and veteran forward Braden Dorsey (5-10, Sr.) who totaled 10.1 points and 6.2 rebounds will anchor the Lady Lions uptempo attack that can score off motion offense and create transition baskets off turnovers. Morgan Hillebrand (5-9, Sr.) who connected on 44% of her three point attempts will once again add an outside scoring threat while Taya Kellogg (5-7, Sr.) sets up scoring chances averaging 5.2 assists per game. Head coach Chris Brown will again rotate his lineup with talent to keep the energy at a high level including guard Lauren Ford (5-5, Sr.) and Kennedi Cooper (5-5, Jr.) while Brittney Wann (5-8, Jr.) will boost the production inside.

The Lady Lions seek to raise their productivity that generated a 25 point per game winning margin with an aggressive defensive effort. “We’ve got the best of both worlds, returning players that know how to win plus the addition of a talented group of young players,” notes Brown. “When we finalize our team chemistry, we can be as good as we want to be.” Howe Lions Head Coach: Taggart Lockhart 2015-16 Record: 17-10

The game plan for the Lions is one game at a time as new head coach Taggart Lockhart’s roster includes two starters from last year’s 1710 campaign. Leading the charge for the Lions will be the guard combination of Reid Frasher (511, Jr.) who totaled 7.3 points per game and 3.5 assists per contest along with Trey Nation (5-10, Jr.) and Diego Sanchez (5-8, Jr.). The inside attack will rest upon the contributions of Michael Dean (6-2, Jr.), Reece Mitchell (6-1, Jr.), who chipped in 4.5 points per game last season along with Eddie Arrant (6-2, Sr.). Lockhart’s game plan will include added productivity from Brant Denton (6-1, Jr.), Garrett Allen (6-2, So.), Mick Brimfield (6-3, So.) and Haydon Hall (6-1, So.). “We’re developing a new look with our style of play,” notes Lockhart. “The majority of the kids know it’s finally their chance to step up and continue the winning ways of the Lions.” HOWE LADY LIONS 00 Elizabeth Crabtree F 3 Lauren Ford 4 Sydnie Womack 10 Angela Price 11 Jalei Olgesby 12 Braden Dorsey 15 Rachel Beames 21 Brittney Wann

WARNER EAGLES

FLYING HIGH WITH GREAT EXPECTATIONS The determination of this year’s lineup of talent for the girls and boys basketball teams has Warner fans anxiously awaiting the beginning of another season. Warner Lady Eagles Head Coach: Mindi Peters 2015-16 Record: 19-8 Assistant Coach: Mickey Duncan The Lady Eagles reached the area tournament in 2015 and with four starters returning, coach Mindi Peters is charged up about the possibilities for 2016. “I’m excited about the leadership that we have returning this season. I am fortunate to have a

group of ladies that work hard, are committed, are coachable, and are determined to win.” Perhaps the player that best embodies that enthusiasm for Peters is all-conference point guard Chelsea Anderson (5-5, Sr.) who averaged 13 points and 6 rebounds last year for Warner. Back to man the inside for the Lady Eagles is Triston Potts (5-10, Sr.). With another year under her belt she’s sure to improve on her scoring and rebounding numbers from last year. The third senior returning to provide the leadership that Peters mentioned is forward Britney Hammans (5-9, Sr.) with a 7.3 point per game average. Lauren Wardlow (5-6, Jr.) is the fourth starter back in the fold for the Lady Eagles with a 5.6 point per game scoring average. Mickayla Lawson (5-3, Jr.), who saw considerable playing time last season, will probably fill out the final starting spot for the Lady Eagles. If they can continue their steady shooting on offense (38% from the field and 39% from beyond the arc) and shore up the defense, these Lady Eagles might have a legitimate shot of making it to the Big House this year. Warner Eagles Head Coach: Sam Fairchild 2015-16 Record: 6-18 Assistant Coaches: Trae Fairchild and John Hart Sam Fairchild takes over the coaching reins for the Eagles in 2016 with a good nucleus of

THREE RIVERS BASKETBALL PREVIEW 2016-2017

returning players for Warner including three starters. Clayton Kilpatrick (6-3, Sr.) will be the player the Eagles will look to this season. He’ll get plenty of help from the Neighbors boys, Dawson (6-1, So.) and Ty (6-2, Jr.). Warner should also have good size on the wings and inside with Jayce McPeak (6-3, Sr.) and Stevie Ray Carter (6-4, Sr.). Another plus for this season for the Eagles will be depth as seven sophomores and a handful of freshmen will vie for playing time off the bench. Warner returns a good starting group but their ability to adjust to a new coaching system and the ability of Fairchild to find the right chemistry quickly with his young bench players will be the keys to a successful campaign for the Eagles. Fairchild himself notes, “We have a good nucleus of players returning and depth will be positive. If we can get everyone on the same page, we will be competitive.”

HULBERT RIDERS

Hulbert Lady Riders Head Coach: Towanna Martin-Scott 2015-16 Record: 6-21

Towanna Martin-Scott who has served as an assistant coach for several years including four years under the late Rick Ott takes over the reins to guide the Lady Riders in 2016. “The impact he had on the players and staff cannot be replaced but we hope to go out and honor him every single night we play”, said Martin-Scott.

With nine of their top 10 players returning, Hulbert should be able to improve greatly on last years mark. All-conference guard Tina Buford (5-4, Sr.), who averaged 8.6 points per game will be the go-to player for the Lady Riders. Katy Medlin (5-9, So.) with a 6.1 ppg average and Destiny Brave (5-5, So.) will be two players to watch according to Martin-Scott. A big plus for Hulbert will be the experienced players on the roster to fill other starting positions or come in off the bench. They include seniors Hannah Haworth who at 5-7 will offer some help in the paint, Elizabeth Potts, and Brenna Marsh and sophomores Hannah Thompson and Madison Chuculate-all of whom have playing experience. “Given the experience level of this team and our strong finish last year, this group is hungry,” said Martin-Scott. “If we continue to improve on the fundamentals we’ll sneak up on some folks this year.” Hulbert Riders Head Coach: Brandon Lierle 2015-16 Record: 16-10

The basketball program at Hulbert is still dealing with the sudden passing last spring of veteran coach Rick Ott who coached both the boys and girls teams at different times. Brandon Lierle takes over the reins of the boys program and will need some underclassmen to become quick learners this year. The Riders graduated five seniors last spring including a pair of four year starters in Parker Taylor and Mason Fielden. The Riders do return all-conference guard Ramsey Arnall (5-9, SR.) who averaged nearly 10 points a game and Jeremy Beeler (6-0, Sr.) who averaged 6.8 points per game but whom the basketball team won’t get until he’s done with his quarterbacking duties on the gridiron. Joining Arnall and Beeler from last year’s squad will be Jacob Bruce (5-11, So.) who averaged 6.2 points per game. Past that, Lierle will rely on some inexperienced seniors and underclassmen to step up and fill the gap. How quickly he can find those missing pieces will determine the success of the Riders this season.

PORTER PIRATES

Cheyenne Marshall Porter Lady Pirates Head Coach: Zac Ross 2015-16 Record: 17-9

The Lady Pirates ship sets sail with all five starters returning from last year’s 17-9

campaign. The lineup of talent plus experience is led by a quintet of seniors including Cheyenne Marshall (5-8, Sr.) and Jessica White (6-1, Sr.) who are attracting attention from college basketball coaches plus Kalli Jones (5-6, Sr.), Kennedy Mathis (5-6, Sr.) and Chelsea Levelle (5-5, Sr.). Adding to the energy on the court will be three juniors Jasmine Scott (5-0, Jr.), Lexie Conley (5-3, Jr.) and Makayla Kilgorre (5-5, Jr.) along with Shaylea Hawley (5-6, So.). “This is a fun group to coach because of the athletic abilities and their will to succeed,” said head coach Zac Ross. “The success they achieved in soccer and track carries over to the basketball court. Talent and determination give us a really good chance every time we take the floor.”

HASKELL HAYMAKERS

Kristen Webb

Porter Pirates Head Coach: James Hurst 2015-16 Record: 6-17

With a combination of quickness and size, the Pirates outlook is bright as James Hurst enters his first season as head coach with three starters returning. John Israel (6-4, Sr.) returns to the post joined by Koehn Chaney (6-2, Sr.) who averaged 7.5 points per game, Tyler Kilgore (6-2, So.) and Tiler Moore (6-1, Jr.) on the front line while Jordan Carter (5-9, Sr.) and Caleb Cox (5-9, Jr.) join forces at guard with A.J. Gaines (5-6, Jr.). Adding to the production this season will be Conner Heberger (6-1, So.) and Drew VanVors (5-11, Jr.) “When we put all the pieces together, this group can cause our opponents plenty of challenges,” said Hurst.

Haskell Lady Haymakers and Latavia Hollis (5-5, Sr.) who scored 7.2 points per contest lead Head Coach: Rick Kirkhart 2015-16 Record: 18-11 the charge for coach Rick Kirkhart’s lineup. Other players adding to the anticipation for success include There’s plenty of cause for excitement for the Lady Haymakers Katie Booker (5-8, Sr.), Summer Jones (5-10, So.) who scored 4.1 who welcome the return of three starters include senior points and 5.2 rebounds per game forward Kristen Webb (5-10, Sr.) as a freshman as well Sharrill McHenry (5-8, So.), Mariss Smith who totaled 13.9 points and 8.5 rebounds while dishing out 6.4 (Jr.), Sydney Roberts (Fr.), Erica assists per game last season. OKTAHA TIGERS

Oktaha Lady Tigers Head Coach: Chester Pittman 2015-16 Record: 17-12

Now in his 30th year of coaching at Oktaha, veteran mentor Chester Pittman will have to use all of his years of experience to craft a team that lost five of its top eight players without a single senior on the 2016-2017 roster. With virtually an entirely new lineup, the Lady Tigers, who averaged 46 points per game last year will rely upon the playing time experience of Christie Pickins (5-6, Jr.) who tossed in 9.4 points per game and 4.2 rebounds per game and Gracie Dickson (5-6, So.) who contributed just over six points and four rebounds per game in 2015 as the catalyst for early season success. While the younger players continue to develop into the Lady Tigers style of play, Pittman also hopes to get a lot of help this year from Chelsea Martin (5-8, Jr.). A key to success for Oktaha will the ability to play Pittman’s always aggressive man-to-man defense, which limited opponents to 41 points a game last year, very well. “We’ll be young in a lot of spots so I’m hoping we’ll get some help from some of our younger players,’ said Pittman. 44

Oktaha Tigers 2015-16 Record: 10-18 Head Coach: Darian Dickson

In just his second year at the helm, coach Darian Dickson appears on the verge of bringing back the winning tradition of Tiger basketball to Oktaha. With five experienced players back on the floor for the Tigers there’s good reason for Dickson

THREE RIVERS BASKETBALL PREVIEW 2016-2017

to be highly optimistic. Leading the way is Michael Yahola (5-9, Sr.) who averaged 9.2 points per game while dishing out five assists in each game. Dickson calls him “unguardable with the intangibles that make him stand out.” Also figuring in as key components for Oktaha will be a pair of juniors in Tyler Baldridge (6-3, Jr.) who averaged 13.5 points and eight rebounds a game and Dean Austin (6-0, Jr.) who was right behind Baldridge at 13.4 points per game. “These guys made us go last year as sophomores and have done nothing but work hard during the off-season to improve their game,” said Dickson. Also returning for the Tigers will be Nathan Starr (6-2, Sr.) and Tommy Miller (6-0, Sr.) who will who will help provide the senior leadership needed on the floor. Also expected to make contributions will be junior Kolbey Edgar and some exciting newcomers in sophomores Matthew Fry and Korey Walker and freshman Trey Cundiff. “Our kids busted their tails during the off-season and with the nucleus of the team coming back along with the presence of freshmen and sophomore newcomers that can come in and contribute, we now have a solid core of varsity players that know how to compete,” said Dickson.

POCOLA INDIANS Pocola Indians Head Coach: Scott Nelke 2015-16 Record: 8-18

Slowly but surely Scott Nelke is getting the basketball program back on track at Pocola as be enters his third season at the helm. With three starters back, there’s a good core of experience on which to build. Point guard Brandon Thompson (5-9, Jr.) who averaged 10 points per game last season will be the man to set things in motion on the floor. He’ll be looking to Devin Howes (5-9, Jr.) and Ryan Richison (6-2, Sr.) to improve on their offensive production from last year. The final two starting spots will likely be filled by Tatum Lamon (5-11, So.) and Derek Carter (6-4, Fr.) who will provide some needed size in the paint for the Indians. “Our building process continues with a mesh

WISTER WILDCATS

Wister Lady Wildcats Head Coach: Casey Hemphill 2015-16 Record: 18-13

The foundation for success for the Lady Wildcats continues to revolve around a “Never Give Up” approach anchored around the experience returning to the court. Leading the charge will be a quartet of seniors including guards Hunter Brown (5-5, Sr.) and Katie Foster (5-6, Sr.) along with forwards Stevee McMillin (5-8, Sr.), and Amye Warren (5-10, Sr.). Running the offense at point guard will be Kinzie Wood (5-3, So.) who can deliver points from the perimeter while setting up scoring chances with assists. The front line gets a boost with the presence of Trisha Waldon (5-11, So.) while Balie Baldwin (5-6, So.) and Kim Carpenter (5-2, So.) bolster coach Casey Hemphill’s rotation of guards.

Coach Eric Ladd returns a good mix of experience and youth for a Lady Indians team that got as far as the area tournament last season. Running the forecourt will be Lupe Galvan (5-5, Sr.) who averaged 10 point a game for Pocola last year. There will also be experience inside for the Lady Indians with Rakell Lairamore (6-0, Sr.) patrolling the paint and expected to improve on her 8.8 point and 6 rebound per game average. Two returning juniors also add to the experience level for Pocola with Morgan Francis (5-7, Jr.) and Summer Perkins (5-6, Jr.). The Lady Indians will also have a good mix of youth with a dash of experience off the bench with senior Lexi Billingsley, junior Amy Galvan, “We’re putting the pieces back together after a couple of early injuries,” admits Hemphill. “The effort of this year’s team is what will give us the chance to become a difference maker by the time playoffs roll around.”

Wister Wildcats Head Coach: John McAlester 2015-16 Record: 20-11

The return of all five starters has fans of the Wildcats excited to watch this year’s squad continue the winning tradition that last year earned a 20-11 record. Leading the transition will be two returning starters including Kylar Stilwell (5-9, Sr.) who averaged 14.1 points per game a year ago along with Hunter Stratton (5-11, Jr.) who totaled 6.3 points per contest. Nobles also looks for Stran Eubanks (6-0, Jr.) to create added point production along with Michael Gray (6-7, Sr.) who averaged 5.4 points last season. Sam Hunt (6-0, Jr.), Chris Nofire (6-2, Sr.), Jason Flynn (5-10, Jr.), Brayden Patrick (5-11, Jr.), Reid Kirk (5-8, So.) and Preston Gonzales (5-9, So.) figure into Nobles’ rotation of players to keep the intensity of play at high levels.

The sky’s the limit for the Lady Mustangs who continue to build a new foundation as head coach Paul Cates takes charge of the program two years removed from a 2014 berth in the Class A state tournament. OKAY MUSTANGS

Filling the final starting spot will be a rotation of Lloyd Houston (6-2, Jr.) and Colton Skiles (6-2, Jr.), cousin to Austin. The Mustangs also return some experience the bench in Danny Johnson (5-10, Jr.) and Jackie Williams (5-10, Sr.). With the talent and playoff experience these seniors have built up over the last three years, the Mustangs would seem a sure bet to be visiting the Big House again come March and playing on Saturday in quest of gold. Okay Lady Mustangs Head Coach: Chad Clark 2015-16 Record: 16-11

“Stang Nation” anxiously awaits the start of another basketball season as the Mustangs prepare to break from the herd in Class A boys basketball in their quest for a state championship while the Lady Mustangs are reloading the cupboard with talent and quickness that will result in victories. Okay Mustangs Head Coach: Chad Clark 2015-16 Record: 28-4

Though they lost five seniors, the cupboard is far from bare for the Lady Mustangs as they prepare for the new season. Okay will return four players with a lot of court experience led by Karliegh Mc Mahan (5-9, Sr.) who is the leading scorer back for the Lady Mustangs at just over 11 points per game. Adding to senior leadership experience will be Kendra Whiteday (5-7,

Sr.) and Blake Judkins (5-8, Sr.) who together accounted for about 16 points a game last season. Sierra Yochum (5-11, Jr.) is back to help the Lady Mustangs on the boards. Off the bench head coach Chad Clark looks for Kyla Parnell (58, Jr.), Sydnee Westbrook (5-6, Jr.) and Shaynei Green (5-6, Fr.) to make valuable contributions. “With our returning experience and added speed some of the newcomers will bring, we could have a pretty good year,” said Clark.

Could 2016-17 be the year the Mustangs finally bring home the gold ball? There’s every reason to be a Mustang believer this year. After falling short in the state championship game last year, Okay returns four starters and an experienced bench to take on Class A this year. Leading the way is VYPE Top 100 standout Darius Riggs (6-1, Sr.) who averaged nearly 16 points a game. His brother Caleb (6-3, Sr.) who averaged just over 19 points per game joins Darius as a guard/forward. Caleb Pierce (5-10, Sr.) and Austin Skiles (5-9, Sr.) round out the returning foursome who averaged nearly 72 points a game last season.

PORUM PANTHERS Porum Lady Panthers Head Coach: Bobbie Wheat 2015-16 Record: 16-8

48

2015 was a disappointing season for the Lady Panthers who bowed out of action much sooner than expected. But with return to Class A girls basketball plus four returning starters and six girls overall made up of juniors and seniors who have played together for several years, coach Bobbie Wheat has reason to feel good about 2016. Leading the troop of returning players is the double-double contributions of Aubrie Ayers (6-0, Sr.) with 11.9 points per game average and nearly 13 rebounds a game to her credit last year. Two more seniors will also help pace the Lady Panthers in Logann Villines (5-9, Sr.) who averaged 12.1 points per game and Shailan Toney (5-8, Sr) with nearly 10 points a game last season. The fourth returning starter is inside force Alexis Culbreth (6-1, Jr.) who scored 8.2 points and nearly nine rebounds a game. Emily Eakle (5-4, Jr.) and Hannah Owens (5-11, Jr.) round out Wheat’s top six. A host of underclassmen will man the bench and vie for VYPEOK.COM

playing time for the Lady Panthers. With their size and experience this should be a playoff bound team for Porum.

Porum Panthers Head Coach: Darrick Farriell 2015-16 Record: 9-15

The Panthers should be vastly improved for the 2016 season. One of the main reasons for that optimism is the return of all-conference guard and leading scorer Mason Coulson (6-0, Sr.). His 18.9 points per game average and senior status will be a role model for his teammates and provide the leadership needed to spark this team. He’s joined in the forecourt by Zach Scheulen (5-7, Sr.) who averaged 10.6 points a game in 2015. The third returning starter for Porum is middle man Colby Bailey (6-4, Sr.). Coach Derrick Farriell will rely heavily on youngsters to fill some of the other spots. One of those is football quarterback Colten McMellon (5-10, So.) who will man the small forward spot. Farriell calls him “quick

with great jumping ability.” Clay Pryor (5-9, So.) and Montana Ellison (5-9, Fr.) are expected to contribute off the bench for the Panthers. “We have the potential to be much improved,” said Farriell. “We have several kids who can shoot well and with our improved athleticism we should be able to defend better.”

GORE PIRATES

Gore Pirates Head Coach: Chadd Gehrke 2015-16 Record: 1-22

The Pirates set sail on a journey in search of golden treasures with two returning starters as the ship’s captain Chadd Gehrke enters his second season as head coach. Starting forward Eli Pool (6-1, Jr.) averaged five rebounds per game last year while adding six points joins point guard Trey Mattox (5-11, Jr.) who distributed three assists per game in addition to adding 6.6 points per game. Scooter Carter (5-10, Sr.) returns to the Pirates lineup along with incoming freshman Jericho Pettit (5-10, Fr.) to solidify Gehrke’s rotation of guards along with Cordell Coburn (5-11, Jr.) and Mason Ward (5-10, Jr.). Gehrke points to the efforts of Brandon Souders (6-2, Sr.) along with Jacob Morgan (6-3, Fr.), Damion Dover (5-11, Fr.) and Wyatt Dean (6-0, Jr.) to provide front line help in the battle on the boards. “These young men have put in the time necessary to give themselves a chance to win,” Gehrke said. “By most standards, we’re still a young team but you don’t measure the heart of a champion by what grade they’re in. What you do speaks louder than your words.”

GANS GRIZZLIES Gans Lady Grizzlies Head Coach: Logan Beakley 2015-16 Record: 5-15

The prospects for success continue to build for the Lady Pirates as head coach Charles Hough welcomes the return of two starters including last season’s leading scorer and All-Conference performer Tori Medicinebird (5-10, Sr.) doing work in the blocks. Hough’s game plan will include a rotation of guards to keep up the pace of play revolving around the contributions of Mallori Sheffield (5-6, Sr.) along with Fallon Forbes (5-7, Sr.), Ruby Swimmer (5-5, Jr.) and Leeana Barnes (5-4, Fr.). Adding a second inside presence will be Leina Young (5-10, Jr.) plus Trinity Barnes (5-8, Jr.) and Layne Mannon (5-8, So.). Depth is a plus for the Lady Pirates this season with the efforts of Caley Call (5-3, Fr.) Amanda Stewerd (5-6, So.), Tesa Ward (5-11, Fr.), Hannah Pettit (5-5, Fr.) and Raylei Yates

(5-6, Jr.) creating an attitude of performance plus enthusiasm to this year’s roster. “We’re still young but return our leading scorer plus we’ve added a talented group of freshmen that lost only one game last season,” said Hough. “Our approach is to stay focused and take things game by game. the roster. “Effort and attitude combined with talent gives this group an opportunity to be successful,” said Beakley. “Through ups and downs, these four girls remained determined to reach their goals. Kolton Ringgold (6-0, Sr.) who battled to deliver 7.5 points plus 5.1 rebounds per game returns to the starting unit along with Alex Gurwell (6-2, Sr.) who totaled 5.2 points and 2.3 rebounds per contest. Adding playing time experience will be point guard David Holmes (5-10, Jr.) who challenged opponents while averaging 2.9 steals per game while contributing 3.2 points. Also expected to be a difference maker will be Dakota Pruitt (5-9, Jr.) who returns to provide added scoring and defensive prowess to

the Grizzlies roster after overcoming an ACL last season. WEBBERS FALLS WARRIORS

Webbers Falls Warriors Head Coach: Jerry Ward 2015-16 Record: 19-7 Assistant Coach: Grant Ward The expectations will be high for the 2016 edition of the Warriors with four starters returning from a team that went as far as the area tournament last season. Team-leading scorer and all-conference player Garrett Rice (63, Sr.) will be the catalyst for this team. Averaging over 16 points a game last year, Rice will be called on to maintain or improve on that number this year while providing the senior leadership for the team. He’s joined in the forecourt by fellow all-conference selectee Austin Maxwell (6-0, Jr.) with a 7.3 point per game average and Jeremy Guinn (5-10, Jr.) who averaged better than 8 points per game. On the wings the Warriors also return experience with Tommy Coppin (6-0, Jr.) and David Guinn (5-10, Jr.) both of whom contributed about four points per game with their minutes last year. Veteran head coach Jerry Ward, who coached both the boys and girls far into the playoffs last season, knows that the boys will be expected to take it to the next level in 2016. “With four starters returning from a 19-7 season and a spot in the area tournament, the expectations are high for another great season and hopefully a spot in the final eight this year.” 50

Webbers Falls Lady Warriors Head Coach: Jerry Ward 2015-16 Record: 24-5

It’s re-tooling time for the Lady Warriors who lost three key starters off last year’s 24-5 squad that was just one win away from making it to the state tournament. Out of the top five on coach Jerry Ward’s early roster only one senior is aboard to be the team leader in forward Lacey Ogren (5-7, Sr.) who had six points and three rebounds per game last season. Ward will have to rely on sophomores to fill the rest of the line up with guard Madison Carter (5-4, So.) probably the most experienced of the crew with a 3.5

points per game average. Also back with court experience for the Lady Warriors is Shianne Garrison (5-7, So.) who averaged just over two points a game in her action last year. Two other players that Ward will be callling on are Jayden Carter (5-7, So.) and Haley Cato (5-5, So.). How talented and coachable these young players are will be a key in whether or not Webbers Falls will be able to climb the ladder as they did last year.
