Athletes from Three Rivers’ claim gold in state track meet competition.

A letter from bill huddleston VYPE Three Rivers celebrates the end of the 2009-2010 school year with a month by month review in this month’s issue. This season of excitement concludes with championship performances by spring sports’ teams and athletes and VYPE recaps the state tournament results on the pages of Game Plan. There have been so many moments of victory for teams in our area. I want to congratulate each school on your respective accomplishments and say a special “thanks” to a special group of shutter-bugs (aka photographers) that have helped to capture the moments in photos for VYPE. As the summer continues, VYPE will continue to follow the team camps and other action as well as prepare for the start of another school year including the 2010 high school football season. The stories of Three Rivers’ student athletes and teams are plentiful. I encourage everyone to stay in touch with your ideas for VYPE. Just send me an email to bill.huddleston@vype.com. Tell someone about the latest issue of VYPE High School Sports Magazine—Three Rivers Issue. If you like VYPE…you’re going to enjoy VYPE—Three Rivers… ”We’re in the Game.”

uccess…in sports is often measured by wins and losses. Muskogee High School softball coach Keith Coleman sees it as something more…success is measured more by how you deal with situations rather than the number of games you win or lose.

A native of Muskogee and graduate of Muskogee High, Coleman credits his background and life experiences to his success as a coach. “When I played football at Muskogee, and then in college, my coaches emphasized hard work and reminded us daily that no one person was bigger than the team,” said Coleman. ”I think that’s like our softball team. These girls are good athletes, but they’re a better team because they know they can count on each other in tough situations. As a coach, I’ve tried to help my players learn from their experiences in sports and how they deal with wins and losses will benefit them in their adult lives too.”

16

“We teach them about adversity…and how you respond is up to you,” said Coleman. “How you deal with each situation will determine your eventual outcome.” Coleman and his wife Corey have lived those experiences first hand. Only two months following their honeymoon in 2005, doctors first diagnosed Corey with cancer presenting Coleman with life and career decisions. “When the opportunity to coach softball came open, I didn’t know at the time how great an opportunity this would be for me, to get a chance to share in the success of this team and the lives of my players,” said Coleman. Following treatments, Corey’s cancer went into remission only to return in 2009. “She has showed us all how to deal with adversity. She’s always been our number one fan and inspiration,” said Coleman. “Whenever Corey comes to practice or a game, she gives all of us something more to play for. She’s winning her battles and teaching all of us how to play the game of life.” Coleman and the Muskogee Roughers’ softball teams have enjoyed athletic success including winning the Class 6A slow-pitch state championship in 2009.

This year’s spring season once again included the state tournament. Three members of the Roughers were named All-State along with Coleman being selected as coach of the Large East All-State team. “I enjoy winning more than losing,” said Coleman. “But, what makes it all worthwhile is when I watch my players respond to challenges and see them overcome those circumstances by making the best of the situation. When you hear one of them say something that we’ve talked about before, you get a feeling that maybe you’ve made a positive difference in their lives.” First National Bank of Muskogee wants to congratulate Coach Coleman for his accomplishments and encourage his continued spirit of success both on and off the court.

Oktaha Lady Tigers Golf Team 2010 Class 2A State Champions Back to Back...the Oktaha Lady Tigers golf team once again captured the Class 2A State Championship. In an overwhelming fashion, Oktaha claimed the title with a 64 stroke margin of victory. Four of the five golfers finished in the top 15 including freshman Kailey Campbell’s 3rd place and Emery Fox, a junior, finishing 5th in medalist competition. The 2010 championship is the school’s 2nd golf title including the ’09 victory in a short history of 5 seasons that also included a runner-up finish in 2008. Oktaha finished the season undefeated in tournament play winning all 10 events. Campbell, the Tigers’ #1 player, was dominating winning 6 events, 3 second place finishes, and 1 third in medalist play. “Winning last year’s championship raised this year’s team expectations,” said coach Chester Pittman. “These girls knew that in order to repeat they had to play golf everyday. We have the talent to be in competition, but the difference was going to be practice…practice…practice.”

Character Counts LOCKER TALK

By definition, Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. Muskogee Federal Credit Union celebrates achievements of local high school athletes and teams presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” This month’s award goes to Tahlequah High School junior, Moe Brown.

Tahlequah High School track and cross-country coaches questioned Moe Brown about his goals at the beginning of the season; his answer was two words—state champion. And, when Moe was asked by coaches to first invest himself in his teammates and the program—and then see what he would get back in return. His reply was again brief…”whatever’s best for the team.” Tahlequah coaches and teammates would discover Moe’s answer was already his way of life everyday. “Inside the spirit of this quiet and tough minded athlete is a passionate person,” said Jason Proctor, cross country coach for the Tigers. “Moe has a big heart; you can see it with how he relates with his mom and siblings and how he interacts with his teammates.” The character and personality works off the track as well. “Moe’s well liked by everyone,” said Bart Franks, head track coach. “Kids and teachers relate to him because he’s a friend to everyone. No doubt, Moe’s a winner.” Moe’s athletic success is golden…winning a pair of gold medals at the Class 5A state track meet as a member of Tahlequah’s 3200 meter relay team and the individual 800 meter run by a fraction of a second. In the fall cross country competition, Moe finished in the top 20. The victories are something Moe credits his teammates for their help. “They made me better,” said Brown, giving credit to gaining strength from my training partners. “I owe it to Rusty (Fowler), Ara (Poteete), Ben (Grant) and Paul (Blevins). We did this together.”

of the Month Lauren Mitchell Tahlequah High School Singles competition in tennis… can be a lonely situation as the competition matches you against the player on the other end of the court…Tahlequah High School junior Lauren Mitchell is member of the Tigers’ tennis team and claims that each match is more like doubles because of her belief in Jesus Christ. “He’s always there with me…and helps me deal with my frustrations when I hit a bad shot or I’m not playing very good,” said Lauren. “It’s really cool too that my teammates and our coaches share our Christian beliefs through FCA; we gain strength and determination from each other. It’s a special kind of team spirit to hold each other accountable to our commitment to God.” Because of Lauren’s willingness to follow Christ and be an example for others, she finds every day rewarding. “Some people may think being a Christian is boring and plain, but for me it’s really fun and exciting,” said Lauren. “Being a Christian doesn’t restrict you from doing things…it just sets a standard for you to follow and helps me make daily decisions pretty easy.” “I like keeping God’s word close at all times,” said Lauren. “On my mind, in my heart and on my phone where I can always turn to my favorite verse…Isaiah 40:31: …but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
