“Let’s get ready for some football!” It’s been a joy working with the VYPE team in publishing this year’s edition of the Oklahoma Pigskin Preview. We’ve tried in depth to bring you the most accurate information possible leading up to the high school football season. We have spoken personally to every coach in the book and share the passion that each and every one of you do when it comes to Friday night’s in Oklahoma. I, for one, can’t wait for the games to begin. You will see us all over the state this fall. There’s not better feeling than to jump in the car and hit two or three games on a Friday. All the classes across the state of Oklahoma are extremely competitive in 2011. On the cover you will find the defending state champions form classes 2A-4A. The Heritage Hall Chargers provide the best that 3A has to offer, but with a loaded field, you never know what can happen. It will be a pleasure to contribute to the VYPE properties on a monthly basis this year. That allows me to share even more of my passion for high school sports with an audience that loves to soak up the great coverage provided by VYPE. Enough of the writing! Let’s play some football.

By Austin Chadwick High school football in Oklahoma is very special to those who compete on Friday nights. Of course some would say that Saturdays in Norman, Oklahoma are just as special. Then others might make the case that nothing beats the NFL on Sundays. Very few get an opportunity to play in college and a minuscule amount get a chance to play on Sundays. But for King-

fisher’s own Curtis Lofton, he has done it all. “I am blessed with the opportunities I have been given to play professionally,” said Lofton. “No matter how successful I, am I have to say that it all started in Kingfisher, Oklahoma. Nothing beats those Friday nights at The Hive.”

Lofton enjoyed a stellar career with the Yellowjackets. He started three years and tallied for over 500 tackles in his career. In 2003, Lofton led Kingfisher to the state title as a junior and in 2004, the Yellowjackets were semifinalists while Lofton was a consensus All-Stater and All-American. What many people didn’t realize was that Lofton excelled in the classroom as well, earning honor roll status his senior year. “I was always taught to do things the right way and to apply myself in the classroom.”

Lofton continued on to fulfill his dream at Oklahoma University and excelled for the Sooners from 2005-2007. In 2007, Lofton was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year and was a consensus All-American. Even in the 2007 Big 12 Championship game, Lofton contributed by picking off a Chase Daniels pass and returned it inside the Missouri

he is slated to be one of the better linebackers in the league by ESPN analyst Chris Mortensen. “He brings a wonderful nose for the ball,” said Mortensen. “Couple that with his speed and athleticism, and the fact that he is a pretty smart guy, and he has a chance to be one of the best in 2010.”

The Sooner-born and Soonerbred tackling machine has made it a point to credit Oklahoma high school football as one of the best around. “I have played with guys all over the country and sure, some states might have really good high school football reputation, but when you consider the guys I played with at OU, and how we are seeing more and more Oklahoma athletes make it to the NFL, it is easy to say that we can definitely hold our own.” Lofton enters his third season with the Falcons and at 24,

Support Network Important in Choosing a College Think college is a continuation of high school? Think again. Many college freshmen need a team on their side who believes in them, motivates, and builds the student’s confidence. College freshmen experience a fonnear the national average, which indicates that about 30 percent of students who start college this fall will not return. So what should parents and students look for in a college or university to make their transition a successful one?

1.

A good tutoring or mentoring 3. program for freshmen students is important. Some students ROSE will STATE want a place they can go at least weekly, or more, to help them with their academics and time management.

2.

Programs that emphasize personal responsibility. Parents don’t attend classes or can’t talk to instructors about their child’s academic success after high school. It’s up to the student. Students should learn that, “No one’s looking out for you except yourself!”

Look for a Welcome Center that encourages student involvement and helps students with their transition to college. Other helpful steps include the following. First, find a college that has a streamlined admissions process, with a special office for first-time students (Like a Welcome Center.) Go there and ask someone what’s next. They will usually have you fill out a simple application, either online or on campus, and provide your high school or prior college transcript, or G.E.D certificate or scores.

4.

Apply for financial aid and scholarships. The Welcome Center can step you through a standardized federal form called a FAFSA. This form lets the college know what kinds of grants, loans or scholarships for which you might be eligible.

5.

Submit your ACT or SAT scores.

6.

Meet with an academic adviser to assist you in selecting classes.

“The student Welcome Center is the first stop for individuals who are considering attending Rose State College,” says director Towry Barnard. “Whether you are a recent high school graduate, or an adult who is returning to school, or an adult who is wishing to change career fields, the Student Welcome Center Team ensures that you understand the steps necessary to begin your educational journey. “ College is an investment in your future and with every wise investment you should always do your research so you’ll have a successful outcome!

HC - Steve Huff - 6th year

Quick Hits - Midwest City has scored in double figures in 87 of its’ last 90 games. The Bombers were last shut out by Moore in 2000. That’s a scoring streak of 119 games.

Midwest City Bombers

Mark says

- The Bombers enter 2011 with a 30-game district winning streak. Westmoore was the last team to beat Midwest City in a district game during the 2006 season. - Midwest City has defeated Edmond 13 consecutive times. The Bulldogs last won a 7-3 decision in 1988. The Bombers avenged that defeat in the second round of the playoffs on the way to the State Championship.

U

pon being informed that his team had won 30 consecutive district contests, head coach Steve Huff was surprised. “I had no idea. Our goal is to win game one and win game eleven. Last year we didn’t win game eleven.” The Bombers were upset in the first round of the playoffs after conquering all ten regular season opponents. This Midwest City team is not only motivated by an early playoff exit, but extremely talented. Senior running back James Flanders (6-0, 195) is the bell cow. He carried the football to the tune of 1,629 yards and 22 touchdowns as a junior alone. Huff vows to get him some help this season. And help will come in the form of Ricky Reeves (6-0, 195), a

two-year starter at cornerback. Reeves is an extremely talented player who asked to be included in the offensive plans for his senior season. Ronny Davis (6-1, 190) is another returning defensive starter that could wind up on offense. After starting at corner last fall, Davis will battle junior Joel Davis (6-3, 190) to call the shots for the Bombers’ offense. Midwest City could go at least six deep at receiver. Michael Wisby, Cornell Neal and Zac Brannon are just a few of the players that will be catching passes. The offensive line is built around third year starter Dakota Moran (6-0, 260). He will be on the move from center to guard to make room for some new faces. The defense is senior laden and proven. Midwest City gave up two touchdowns or less in 8 of 11 games. Linebackers Zeke Lewis (5-11, 215) and Miles Hogg (5-10, 215) return to run down the opposition. Hogg is also a candidate to carry the ball in short yardage situations. C.J Smith (6-0, 285) and Devin Crisp (6-2, 290) provide the first line of resistance at tackle. Huff says senior William Dial (6-0, 210) will also find a home somewhere in the front seven. Huff says the key to a successful season is for his senior class to step up and provide leadership. The Bombers have an armada of skill position players. If the quarterback play proves to be good, this team should continue to cruise to another double-digit win total.

Quick Hits

Mark says

- Yukon has not won a playoff game since 1997. The Millers defeated Del City 13-6 on their way to the state finals. - The Millers offense was one of the best in Class 6A in 2010. Yukon scored 21 ore more points in all eleven contests. - Yukon and Mustang have split their last 16 meetings. The Millers won last year 43-28 at home.

Yukon Millers

Derrick Deeds

W

hen it comes to returning starters, Yukon head coach Todd Wilson prefers quality over quantity. And, oh yeah, he will take a solid dose of depth to go along with that quality. Even though starters return at only seven of the twenty-two positions, Wilson thinks the 2011 Millers are going to be a force to reckon with. Senior quarterback Corbin Jones (6-2, 195) more than fits that mold. “He’s a great competitor. Corbin has the ability to make the plays that decide the game in your favor,” said Wilson. Jones has thrown for just a shade under 5,000 yards in his two years as the Millers’ starting quarterback. As an added positive, Jones will be protected by three very familiar

faces. The right side of the Yukon offensive line returns in tact. Center Lance Parks (6-0, 250), guard Will Paddock (6-1, 225) and tackle Tyler Bush (6-1, 275) are in place to make sure that Jones has time to find his targets. Senior Derrick Deeds (5-11, 190) is the only other player with much experience on offense. Deeds saw action carrying the football after injuries decimated the Millers’ running back corps. Deeds led the Millers in interceptions at free safety in 2010. He will continue to fill the free safety spot while sharing time on offense. This season help is on the way at running back from Hunter Meyn and Chance Leggett. Even though Jones will be working with an entirely new receiving unit, Wilson is confident the offense is in good shape. “Any time you have three back up front, it makes you feel good. We will even have some guys push those returing players for time, up front. Our receivers are talented, they just haven’t had the opportunity to prove it yet.” The Millers employ senior Sheldon Kirby (6-1, 310) and Parks to deflect the run. There are questions behind the initial line of defense. Junior Blake Biggs is expected to fill an inside linebacker post after missing all of last year with an injury. The remaining three linebacker posts must be filled. Yukon moves into a new palacial stadium in week two against Santa Fe. If all goes well, the Millers will open the playoffs there as well.

he Eagles are coming off a fine season in 2010, winning the most games since 2003. Graduation took a pretty heavy toll on coach Boone Copeland’s team. He says the experience was worth it. “Winning on the road in the playoffs gave us a lot of confidence. And even though we didn’t fare very well, getting to see Jenks showed us where we want to be.” Copeland expects help from a talented sophomore class to fill in some voids. There isn’t a void at the most important position on the field. Senior quarterback Adrian McDonald (5-11, 180) is a catalyst for the offense. He can make plays with his feat or his arm and has several Division-I offers to date. McDonald will frequently look the way of senior receiver Tae VYPEOK.COM

Douglass. The offensive line is built around returning starters Graydon Gatlin (6-2, 240) and Dennis Pletcher (6-2, 245). Ike has more size on the defensive front. Junior Aaron Williams (6-0, 285) is joined by Cleveland, Ohio transfer Tyrone Beverly (6-1, 265) at tackle. Beverly brings 4.9 speed to the field and Copeland says he could also find his way to the offensive line. Davonte Baker returns to aid the secondary at safety. Lawton Ike is a tough team to call. The senior class is small but talented. There are a lot of spots to fill and most teams in the district are improved. If the Eagles win their home games in the district, the playoffs await for a third straight season. Split at home and the Eagles will be turning in their gear after week ten.

Quick Hits - Eisenhower’s last city championship came in 2006. - The rivalry with Lawton Mac has been especially exciting lately. Three of the last four games have been decided by a FG. Ike ended Mac’s threegame winning streak in the series last year 31-28. - The Eagles have been consistent playoff participants. Ike has qualified for the postseason in 10 of 12 the past years. Edmond Bulldogs

HC - justin merideth - 3rd year

Mark says

Mike Huff

T

hird-year head coach Justin Merideth must replace a senior class that was responsible for the best run in recent memory at Edmond Memorial. Merideth is confident that the Bulldogs still have more bite than bark going into 2011. “We lost a good senior group. We need experience but by no means are we young. Our guys just need some reps.” Edmond has relied on outstanding play from its defense but this year may be different. Points should come easier with senior Mike Huff (6-3, 230) at quarterback. Huff has already been offered by Air Force. He took over as the starter when an injury forced Kameron Doolittle (NEO) to the sidelines in week

four. He combines strength and football savvy to make the Bulldogs’ attack go. Both Huff and senior running back Gavin Fouts are testaments to Merideth’s belief that all his less experienced players need is a chance. Fouts was third on the depth chart last year but produced a pair of 100-yard rushing efforts once inserted into the lineup. He’ll start at tailback and be used at linebacker this fall. Junior Devon Coffman (5-11, 175) should see action on both sides of the ball as well at receiver and strong safety. Senior John Scheihing (6-2, 250) is the leader of the big men up front. He’s a key element to the offensive game plan of establishing the run. Merideth has several active players to chose from in the defensive front seven. Senior Matt Hickman (6-1, 220) is the man in the middle of the 4-3. He started all 11 games for the Bulldogs and has the instincts to get to the football. Courtney Houston (6-0, 220) played multiple positions a year ago. He will likely settle at defensive tackle for the upcoming season. Seniors Dalton Dunlap and Will Hale bring back some game experience at defensive end. The Bulldogs have a tough slate to start the campaign, facing three very improved football teams. If they can manage a difficult start, the district schedule becomes somewhat friendly with key tilts against Yukon and Lawton Ike at home.

The 2009 playoff win over Mustang was the first since the Edmond school system split three-ways. - Edmond has lost 13 consecutive games to district rival Midwest City - The Bulldogs won 22 combined games the past three seasons. Bryan Payne

L

ong-time Union assistant Wade Standley replaces Lance Manning as the head coach at Norman North. Standley spent the last two seasons as the head coach at Liberal, Kansas. He found his new pupils extremely receptive upon arrival. “We have great kids and Norman is a great community with a great school system,” said Standley. “The willingness to learn, attitude and effort has been there.” The Timberwolves will employ a one-back offensive look and base out of the 3-4 on defense. One thing that is not present at Norman North is a large senior class. There are only eight seniors out for football. That will require contributions from excellent sophomore and junior classes. Standley has a choice to make at quarterback between junior

Peyton Gavras (5-10, 180) and senior Chad Ehrhart (6-0, 195). Gavras played mainly on the defensive side of the ball in 2010 while Ehrhart did see some time under center, serving as the backup. The battle is too close to call going into the fall. Martez Harrison is the Timberwolves top weapon at receiver. Bryan Payne (5-5, 145) turns his lack of size into a strength at running back. He’s elusive and frequently makes defenders look silly with his ability to shift direction in a split second. Senior center Riley Nolan (6-2, 265) is a twoyear starter and the top blocker for the Timberwolves. The junior class has a big presence on defense. Linebacker Beau Proctor (6-0, 195) earned his way onto the field by playing with wreckless abandon on special teams. Proctor will start at linebacker next to fellow juniors Jaxon Uhles (5-11, 200) and D.J. Gasso (5-11, 180). At safety, juniors D.J. Hicks (5-9, 175) and Jordan Evans give the Timberwolves even more players that can find their way to the football. I think Standley will bring intensity to the defense. However, the schedule is murderous with four of the first five games against opponents that made the playoffs a year ago. Games against Edmond and Lawton Ike are of ultra-importance is the Timberwolves are to make the playoffs.

HC - Scott Myers - 4th year

Quick Hits - The Lions losing streak stands at 21 entering the fall. Their last victory was a sweet one over rival Southmoore 29-26 in 2009. - Moore picked up the pace offensively down the stretch in 2010. The Lions scored 90 points in their final four games as opposed to 43 in the first six. They scored only 91 points during the 2009 campaign. - Points have been especially difficult against long-time rival Norman. The Lions have scored just 37 points in the last seven games against the Tigers. All losses.

W

hen will the Lions restore their roar? Head coach Scott Myers thinks it will be in 2011. “We took a lot of hits when this group were sophoomores. We were competitive last year but just couldn’t make the plays to get over the top.” Myers has a large group of seniors that have been playing for the past two years. The group is hungry to atone for the last two winless seasons. Corey Reeves is the starting quarterback for the Lions. He played mostly receiver a year ago but did earn one start at the position. Myers will use more players at running back. Last year most of the load fell on Joey Karp (5-9, 195). Myers praised Karp for his off-season work ethic and his ability to both catch passes and protect the quarterback. Senior Taylor Lewis (6-1, 220) has the size to batter the opposition with Derek Harris (5-9, 160) providing some quickness. Both Lewis and Harris will see action on defense at linebacker and safety. Grant Linstead (6-0, 180) and Joe Haddox (6-1, 180) are the outside receivers. Linstead has started at the position since his sophomore season. He drew high praise from his head coach for his love of the game and instincts. Jordan Martin and Brandon Eddins are the inside receivers. All of the receivers will be expected to split time on defense

Grant Linstead either in the secondary or at linebacker. Senior Taylor Smith has experience for the Lions at cornerback. Myers feels his line is coming together quite nicely. Senior center Dakota Gilbert (6-2, 230) is the most veteran of the group. Two more seniors, Eli Taylor (6-2, 260) and Spencer Damm (6-4, 250) appear to have won starting positions along with junior Ethan Birdwell (6-0, 220). Damm will be starting for the first time after a strong summer in the weight room. Birdwell can be used at a down position on defense next to proven senior Jamal Carter (6-2, 250) and junior Bryce O’Dell (6-2, 250). Six of the Lions’ ten losses last year were by two touchdowns or less. I see not only a win in their future but possibly three or four. 2011 should be a much more enjoyable season at Moore.

I

t is rare to begin the post-season without the Putnam City North Panthers in the bracket. Eleven times in the last 15 seasons, PC North has finished in the upperhalf of the district. What happened in 2010? Veteran head coach Bob Wilson is not one to offer up excuses. In spite of many injuries, including the loss of a starting quarterback, Wilson was quick to point out another issue. “Turnovers killed us.” Nine giveaways in the first two games was only a portend of what would be an average of four per contest. “We have to do a better job of taking care of the football this year. We have emphasized it since the end of last season,” said Wilson. The roster isn’t blessed with an abundance

of returning starters. Those that do have experience are talented. At 6-4, 275, it’s easy to see why Daniel Burton (6-4, 275) has multiple Division-I offers. And that hides the fact Burton carries over a 4.3 GPA and has the frame to add even more weight. He’ll block for Dre Holman who never hit his stride after missing the first four games with nagging injuries. Holman had a banner sophomore year and should easily pick up that pace as a healthy senior. Tae Moore transfers in from Santa Fe and will get the ball in a variety of ways lining up in the backfield. Gage Webster has an increased role at receiver with athletic junior J.R. Simon (5-9, 150) taking over at quarterback. Simon was able to break into the lineup at free safety as a sophomore and also saw action on the varsity basketball team. Senior Bray Humphreys (6-2, 215) is big enough to block or split out at receiver. The Panthers have speed in the secondary. Vidale Gant was another one of the walking wounded a year ago, missing the final five games of the season with a bum shoulder. He has lockdown skills at corner. Hard-hitting junior linebacker Ruben Hunter (6-2, 205) is coming off a team-leading effort in tackles. J’Mon Ratliff (6-1, 220) adds to the resistance at linebacker as well. A lack of depth on the roster could factor in if the injuries return in force as they did in 2010.

Kenny Tisdale should all see the football. Tisdale is the newphew of late Oklahoma Sooners’ basketball legend Wayman Tisdale. Dickson and Catron are the top two returning tacklers on defense at linebacker. Junior J.R. Coughran and senior Dakota Arnold will split time at the strongside linebacker. That platoon will allow Coughran to see time at fullback as well. The overflow of talent at the position will allow Dylan Briggs to move into the secondary at strong safety. Zac Reynolds and Jarryd Nelson both have starting experience under their belt on the line. They must shore up the defensive front where the graduation of Hunter Davis (Kansas State) left a big hole. The offensive line should be a strength for the Yellowjackets. Dylan Hartsook (6-6, 285) is drawing attention from the University of Tulsa among others. Hartsook, Cord Mobley, Scott Collison and Brandon Golden are all in the blocking mix. Reynolds and Nelson are also available on the offensive line if needed. Tuberville likes the playmaking ability of quarterback Tyler Rapp. “I think he will really surprise some people,” said the first year head coach of his signal caller.

Lawton Wolverines

HC - Randy Breeze - 6th year

Brandon Bartlett

S

omeone forgot to tell the Lawton Wolverines that the Beasts of the East were the only championship material in Class 6A. Lawton pushed eventual champion Union to double overtime in one of the more memorable playoff games in quite some time. The Putnam City stadium scoreboard showed the Redskins victorios by a margin of 48-41 and everyone in the house knew the defending champs had been pushed to the limit. So what is to expect this time around? “We are bigger, faster and stronger than a year ago,” said head coach Randy Breeze. “All we need is a little experience. We have 19 players

that run 4.7 or faster in the forty.” Senior quarterback Brandon Bartlett (6-2, 180) was able to fill the void after an injury sidelined the Wolverines opening night starter. Bartlett led the team to nine straight victories, posting 18 touchdowns and 1,400 yards passing. Senior Demarious Littles (6-3, 180) is one of those Wolverines with game-breaking speed. He’ll see time on both sides of the football and is a major weapon for Bartlett at wide receiver. Size is not an issue at Lawton. Center Brandon DeWitt (6-3, 270), guard Adam Castro (6-2, 215), tackle Dometreas Pyfer (6-4, 260) and tight end Patrick Diaz (6-2, 230) have plenty of weight to throw around. DeWitt is strong and smart. His bench press is approaching 400 pounds and his GPA is a shade under 4.0. The Wolverines top college prospect is only a junior. D.J. Ward (6-4, 230) has the type of frame that makes Division-I coaches drool. Check out these numbers: Ward benches 335-pounds, has a 30” vertical jump and runs the 40-yard dash in a blazing 4.63. He already has offers from everywhere. The core of this team looks good enough to finish right back on top of the district. The road schedule is much more difficult this season than last. Games against Edmond North, Westmoore and Mustang are all away from Cameron Stadium. If the Wolves are good away from the den, look for a repeat of last year’s district championship.

Quick Hits - The defense was stellar in 2010. Lawton shut out as many opponents in 2010 (4) as in the previous six seasons combined. - And the offense has been pretty good too! The Wolverines have scored 30 points or more in 16 of their last 26 games. - Lawton is two-time defending city champions. It has reigned supreme in 3 of the last six battles for the city championship. - The Wolverines have had much success against Mustang winning six of the last seven tilts in that matchup of heavyweights.

his team has as much break out potential as any in the metro. An amazing 51 seniors are out for football at Edmond North. It is a class that expects to win. One that was city champions as freshmen and 8-1 against a junior varsity schedule as sophomores. Eight starters return on offense and seven on defense looking to translate that success to the varsity level. The entire secondary returns in tact. Coach Jeremy Dombek calls junior corner Curtis Woods, “A dynamic player.” He will field many collegiate offers before his career is finished. Christian Contreras is back at the other corner with Christian Peterson

at free safety and Caleb Crowell at strong safety. The Huskies have just as many proven performers at linebacker. Lyndon Pitzer (6-2, 205) is the team’s leading returning tackler. Pitzer is explosive (38-inch vertical jump) and fast (4.5-forty yard dash). Regan Lamb and Bob Byford join him at the position. The story is not much different in the offensive backfield. Jaren Pittman rushed for 1,400 yards last year. His production alone would be enough to get excited about the Huskies’ rushing attack. But the return of senior Jared Benway (5-10, 205) from injury, makes things even better. Benway scored 14 touchdowns as a sophomore but missed all of 2010. He’s described as a hungry player by his head coach. Eight of his 14 touchdowns came on receptions. Benway combines soft hands with 4.5-speed in the 40 and can be moved around to create matchup difficulties for the defense. Troy Davis (6-5, 220) played quarterback at Western Heights before transferring to Edmond North where he is now a devastating blocker at H-back. Senior Jesse Matthews gets the nod at quarterback. Matthews played receiver last year but started for his class as a freshman. Will Townsend provides a deep threat at receiver with junior Luke Hoskins (6-2, 210) also available to catch passes. The line is built around a pair of blue-chip prospects in senior left tackle Cole Parsons (6-4, 265) and junior center Heath Newland, who started games for the Huskies as a freshman.

NORMAN ADVANCED ROBOTICS OUT FRONT Norman and Norman North high schools have a very interesting part to play in the field of robotic engineering. The Norman Advanced Robotics team has worked their way to attending the Global Conference of Educational Robotics on July 7th in Los Angeles. David Askey, a physics teacher at Norman High School, is the sponsor of the team. Both schools join forces to make up the team and now 17 individuals attended the conference in California. Team members presented reports on state of the art robotics. Autonomous robotics is what the team specializes in and it forces the participants to write 5,000-6,000 lines of computer code to initiate robotic activity. ac Congratulations to the team from Bob Moore Nissan and VYPE Magazine.

Westmoore Jaguars

HC - Billy langford - 2nd year

Mark says

A

n first round upset playoff win over Midwest City was a pleasant reward for a team that according to head coach Billy Langford bought into aggressive, assignment oriented football. The Jaguars season ended the next week at the hands of Owasso. That despair has given way to an offseason of optimism due to a combined 13 returning starters. Five come back on defense featuring runthwarting senior noseguard Kyle Factor (6-0, 255). Langford believes his senior is an all-state caliber player. The secondary is filled with talent. Senior Archie Ocloo-Lee (5-11, 185) returns at free safety with junior Addison Stags (5-10, 165) back at corner.

Another junior, Josh Morgan (5-11, 205) has been starting since he was a freshman at linebacker. His experience is very beneficial as the remaining linebacker spots are filled in the fall. The Jags’ feature several familiar faces on offense. Senior Trevor Thompson (511, 185) triggers the offense. Thompson isn’t the biggest kid on the block but he can scoot and rarely makes bad decisions. A pair of receivers are key targets in the passing game. Senior Dalton Craig (6-4, 185) operates on the outside with Jhames West in the slot. West shined in the last four games and is good enough athletically to be a factor on defense. Junior Austin Richards (5-11, 175) is the heir apparent to touchdown machine Cody Feuerborn at running back. The line features a great combination of junior blockers. Nick Hardaway (6-4, 274) shined at Tulsa team camp and should expect plenty of offers to play at the next level. Jacob Finn (5-11, 225) is another in a long line of Finn’s to wrestle and play football for the Jaguars. They are joined by another junor Zach Clark who earned playing time a year ago as a sophomore. Langford says his team is way ahead of where they were this time a year ago. That bunch started slow but turned into a very capable 6A football team by season’s end. A week two win against Southmoore could provide even more confidence for this still young team. If all plays out according to plan, the Jaguars will welcome Lawton to Moore Stadium with the district title on the line in the season’s final week.

Brandon Taylor

M

ustang has been a model of consistency under head coach Ty Prestidge. The Broncos have strung together eight consecutive playoff appearances and garnered a reputation for scoring in bunches. The scoring should still come in bunches in 2011 but Prestidge feels his defense could make a big difference this fall. Quarterback Brandon Taylor (6-2, 225) has thrown for more than 4,500 yards since taking over midway through the 2009 season. Taylor is being heavily recruited most notably thus far by Oregon State. He handoff and throw the football to a variety of faces, possibly as many as 15 different through the course of the game. Seniors

Jacob Merson (5-10, 175) and Derek Garvin (6-3, 200) are the most notable outside receivers. Garvin is itching to get back on the field after missing all but one contest in 2010 with a knee injury. The inside receiver position features junior Dakota Warrington (5-10, 160). He’s another in a long line of quick and elusive Mustang pass catchers. Protection is provided by a pair of returning starters up front in junior Hunter Baskett (6-0, 285) and senior Aaron Smith (6-0, 265). Baskett is a potential blue-chipper and is on the radar of many coaches after a productive sophomore campaign. Running back will be handled by committee where a battle is currently underway for the starting spot. Now to the improved defense. Several sophomores have matured and grown up with a year of playing time under their belt. Junior noseguard Jarred Chance (6-1, 295) is another potential blue-chipper. He’s one of the stronger players in the district and should make running the football difficult against the Broncos. Junior linebacker Tucker Calmus (6-1, 240) anchors the linebacking efforts which will allow senior Joseph Colbert to move to safety. Colbert and Steven Fruit (6-0, 210) provide size and big-hit potential to the secondary. Junior Andrew Madison (5-8, 170) will be at corner with Nathan Taylor (5-10, 230) at defensive end. The district race has crazy balance. That shouldn’t stop Mustang from remaining in familiar upper-division territory.

HC - Lance Manning - 1st year

L

ance Manning is right where he wants to be. After years of commuting from Edmond to Norman as coach of the Norman North Timberwolves, Manning takes over a new pack of Wolves at Santa Fe. “Of all the possibilities out there, Santa Fe is the best situation for me,” said Manning. He is in charge of a rebuilding effort that will follow an anemic offensive season producing a lone win. A talented sophomore quarterback will be at the helm of the attack. Justin Hansen (6-3, 190) has a very accurate arm and should be able to spread the ball around to a dangerous group of athletes. That will include Trevan Smith (5-9, 175), the younger brother of San Francisco 49ers defensive back Reggie Smith. The

younger Smith was used exclusively on defense in 2010, but Manning feels he’s too valuable to keep away from the offense. He will get the ball in space with senior Tre Kelley (6-4, 200) providing the down field threat. Junior Phillip Sumpter (5-11, 195) is the primary ball carrier and is an effective threat between the tackles. Look for senior Michael Onuaha (6-7, 240) to bring help to the offensive line. Onuaha was a starter at defensive end last year and will see time at both positions this year. Senior guard Allston Hadley (6-1, 295) brings potential to the blocking effort. He should be healthy after sitting out the spring with an injury. The secondary features more athletes. At safety, junior Khari Harding (6-2, 195) and senior Conner Bays (6-0, 190) return with experience as does senior cornerback Zach Birts (5-10, 175). Manning calls senior outside linebacker Ryan Frazier (6-0, 195), “the emotional leader of the defense.” Santa Fe will be an upwardly mobile team in the district. The coaching change should breathe a lot of new life into the program, especially with the addition of former McGuinness head coach Kenny Young to the staff as an assistant. Youth at many key positions is a potential problem but the playoff race seems to be more wide open than in 2010. It’s a race the Wolves should very much be a part of.

winning season was not enough to produce a playoff spot in 2010. And it may not be enough in 2011. In a district tightly bunched with quality teams, Putnam City has a group of proven playmakers. Senior running back Casey Curtis is one of the biggest threats in the metro. Curtis averaged more than 160 yards per game as a junior. Head coach John Wofford praised his seaior for his ability to hit holes with speed and ferocity. Curtis’ running is augmented by veteran senior guards Derrick Rivers (6-0, 220) and Trevon Biglow (6-2, 220). Size is added to the line with the move of Jeff

Tanner (6-6, 290) over frrom defense. Tanner will see time on both sides of the ball but must first recover from a broken foot that will keep him out of the beginning of practice. Add fullback Reed Brooks to the equation and you have a ready-made rush attack. The Pirates are breaking in a new quarterback in junior Devin White (5-10, 170). His speed should call for an increase in the roll-out passing game. If White can put pressure on the defense with his feet, he should find sprinter Anthony Hogg (511, 165) open behind the defense. Hogg was a multiple-event state qualifier in track and has good hands to go with his wheels. Putnam City should be equally capable in stopping the opponents’ rush. D.J. McKinney (6-1, 280) and Tanner bring massive size to the line. Middle linebacker Eli Rushing (6-1, 225) is another big and physical defender. Wofford has a nice mix of speed to chose from in the secondary but it is relatively young and inexperienced. Curtis will be able to help out situationally but won’t be overused due to his value to the offense. Participation is good at Putnam City with 75 players expected out for football. There’s plenty of talent on hand to ease the losses to graduation. I expect plenty of very competitive games on the Pirates’ slate.

ive players graduated the halls of Del City that will play college football at a high level this fall. Quarterback Chazten Gonzales and defensive tackle Jamall Naff even join Rose Bowl champion TCU. Head coach Nick Warehime has the chore of putting the pieces back together after seeing that kind of talent move on. And in spite of those losses, Warehime is confident a salty junior class can keep the Eagles flying high. John McBride takes the place of Gonzales at quarterback. McBride draws toughness from his wrestling background and will be expected to cut down on costly turnovers from a year ago. The skill positions appear to be good, especially the depth at receiver.

Senior Steffon Herd (6-4, 190) has soft hands and above average height. K.T. Toombs, Jerrell Jeter and Larry Long all contributed catching passes as well. Warehime may have the luxury of moving Long to running back where he would share responsibility with sophomore Anthony Mason. The future appears to be bright for Mason after he rushed for 165 yards in his varsity debut as a freshman last year. Junior Jake Warehime (6-1, 275) capably anchors the line and is versatile enough to play both center and guard. The Eagles have one of the more athletic secondary’s you will find. Junior Corey Lawrence (6-1, 180) anchored the state champion 4 x 100 meter relay team and according to Warehime has a chance to be a “special” player. Lawrence is already on the radar of many high Division-I teams. Senior safety Shelden Williams (6-2, 205) is another D-I prospect with Bryson Parker back at the other safety. The front seven is a little less experienced with juniors Markice McKane (5-11, 185) at linebacker and Chris Talley (6-0, 260) at noseguard. Warehime refuses to let a lack of depth be an excuse for his team. “Our front-line players have done excellent things for us here,” There are plenty of good football players on the roster at Del City. They are a team that can’t be overlooked, and if healthy, a team that could make the playoffs for the first time since 2000.

Quick Hits - Del City finished with a combined mark of 4-26 in the three years before Warehime’s arrival. He has led the Eagles to a mark of 19-21 during his 4-year tenure. - The Eagles drop to Class 5A after this season - Warehime is 1-3 against Sooner Road rival Midwest City. The Generals expect close to 60 players to report for practice and enjoyed excellent participation in the off-season weight program. U.S. Grant will spread the field and throw the football. Senior Derrick Young (5-9, 165) and junior Ricky Murphy (5-10, 170) will split time carrying the football. Both will start full time on defense with Young at linebacker and Murphy at free safety. Seniors Christian Nicholson (6-2, 270) and Javier Terraza (5-10, 270) are secondyear starters that bring size to the offensive line. Juniors Easton Coley and Jimmy Kiplinger have impressed Burgess during the summer and should find places somewhere in the defensive front seven. The Generals face an uphill battle in Class 6A. N

orman took the high school football world by storm a year ago. The memory of three straight losing seasons was quickly erased by a seven-game winning streak to begin 2010. Coach Greg Nation has some elite playmakers in the fold for 2011. The offense revolves around the talents of senior running back Donovan Roberts (6-2, 205). “Donovan’s speed has progressed this off-season and he’s continuing to get bigger,” said Nation. Roberts has verbally committed to Arkansas, yet that hasn’t stopped recruiters from continuing to call. He will run behind a pair of threeyear starters. Foster Hare (6-3, 285) and Harrison Madden (6-0, 285) take great pride in the yardage piled up by Roberts. Nation praised his blocking duo for their intelligence on and off the field. Roberts is far from the only weapon on offense. Quarterback Zach Long (5-11, 175) quickly picked up his

progressions in only his second season of contact football. Long is the son of former OU offensive coordinator Chuck Long. Another son of a coach, George Kittle (6-3, 190), who’s dad Bruce is currently coaching tight ends at OU, has already drawn a pair of college offers. The younger Kittle has just under a 4.0 GPA and lends his athletic skills to split end and free safety. The wildcard in the mix is Dodge City, Kansas transfer Rico Hogan (5-11, 165). Nation says Hogan has Division-I skills in both football and basketball. He eyes him as a lock-down cornerback and either a slot or wide receiver on offense. Three-year letterman Brad Davis (5-5, 150) is small, but fast. Clocking a time of 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. The biggest questions are on defense where nine starters graduated. The addition of Hogan will help the secondary where junior Michael Beard (5-11, 165) returns at safety. Trevor Davison (5-10, 175) gets a look at the other safety. Senior Dominic Rosetti (5-9, 185) and junior Blake Dean (5-9, 185) must step up at linebacker where the Tigers graduated a good amount of talent. Senior Matt Jackson (6-2, 300) returns at the nose with juniors Zac Uhles and Patrick Murray expected to help on the line. Norman has the look of a top five team in Oklahoma. Problem is two other top five teams reside in the district. I think the Tigers go far and possibly even spring into the top two of a super-tough 6A-3 race.

Shawnee Wolves

J

ust about everything that could go wrong did go wrong for the Shawnee Wolves in 2010. Combine a move to the state’s largest classification with a rash of injuries and you have the making of a very tough season. And that is precisely what happened to the Wolves, falling to 3-7. The wheels really came off after a victory over Ponca City in week three. Four two-way starters including standout quarterback Brayle Brown were lost in that costly victory. Shawnee finished the season on the road suiting up only 35 players against the largest school in Oklahoma; Broken Arrow. Head coach Billy

HC - Billy Brown - 8th year

Brown doesn’t have a large senior class. Only 8 players are expected to report for fall drills. Brown does feel he has a ton of competition for positions and a junior class that is strong. One of those juniors, Wolf Kienzel (5-11, 190) wound up taking snaps for most of the season. Kienzel was the team’s best receiver and brought a lot of athletic talent under center. Senior Jeremy Barrientos (5-8, 240) drew praise from Brown as one of the strongest players he’s ever coached. Barrientos doubles as a defensive end and tailback. He moves to fullback when the Wolves add another player into the backfield. Junior wide receiver Theo Berry proved his worth by catching a pair of touchdown passes in the season finale. Shawnee welcomes a talented sophomore class that only suffered one defeat the past two junior high seasons. Brown thinks that as many as four sophomores might start on the offensive line. He recognizes that group must mature quickly against a difficult schedule. We should be able to tell quite a bit about the Wolves in the first three weeks. The non-district slate is not easy, but manageable. Losses in those games could portend a rough go in a super, top-heavy Class 6A-3.

outhmoore was hit hard by the injury bug in 2010. That meant playing time for a bunch of sophomores at the varsity level. Two losses by a combined seven points to Norman and Muskogee kepth the Sabercats from finishing in the upper-division of 6A-3, in spite of injury and inexperience. Coach Chris Jensen will have the benefit of all that experience this year, hopefully without the same rash of injuries. Senior tailback Andrew Long (5-10, 185) is a gifted runner. He has 4.4 speed in the 40 and has added some weight from a year ago. Long’s ability to cut at a moments notice makes him extremely difficult to get a hand on. His agility also makes him a huge threat to catch the ball

out of the backfield. Long currently holds an offer from the Air Force Academy and interest from many other schools. Junior Tre Edwards (5-9, 175) is labeled and “old fashioned option quarterback” by Jensen. Edwards can work miracles with the ball in his hand and is a perfect compliment to Long. Junior tight end Jackson Stallings (6-1, 220) is strong and athletic with excellent hands. The misdirection of the Sabercats’ offense should allow him to sneak off the line for some big plays. Senior linebacker Kaleb Thompson (6-0, 200) headlines the defensive efforts. Thompson led the team in tackles as a junior and has compiled over a 4.0 GPA to date. Dartmouth has extended an offer Thompson’s way due to his outstanding work on the field and in the classroom. Junior Karltrell Henderson (5-9, 190) is another weapon that can be used in the offensive backfield or on defense. Henderson rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 11 touchdowns in relief of Long a year ago. Jensen also praised senior safety Levi Jennings (5-11, 170) for his hard work and dedication during the off-season. Even with all the adversity of 2010, the Sabercats were right on the brink of making it back to the playoffs. The top of the district is by far the most competitive in Class 6A and Southmoore should jump right in the middle of that competition.

he Patriots won just a single game in 2010. That single win was no less sweet. It signfied the end to a 28-game losing streak and renewed excitement in the program. Head coach John Jensen hopes to build off that momentum and has a group that just might be capable of doing so. Jensen will have a pretty strong foundation on offense. Seniors Blake Garrity (5-11, 250), Tyler Loudenback (5-11, 240) and Darius Dudley (5-9, 260) along with junior Ben Holley (6-2, 255) bring experience back to the offensive line. Dudley placed in the state powerlifting meet and is one of the stronger players on the team. Loudenback is also a threat on the defensive line and has added weight and strength over the summer. Senior Matt Mimms (5-10, 260) also had a productive summer and should see significant action next to Loudenback on the defensive front. Senior Reggie Alford (5-9, 185) takes over on a full-time basis at quarterback after seeing spot duty a year ago. Alford has a feel for the position and runs the football and the offense efficiently. The rest of the backfield has a veteran look with Levon Eudaly (5-9, 155) and Hassain Williams (5-9, 160) at the wings and A.J. Leineweber (5-7, 175) at fullback. Junior Joseph Wilcots (5-11, 150)

will also see time carrying the football. He clocked a 4.6 time in the 40-yard dash at the TCU football camp. With three backs in the backfield, wide receiver Johnathon Jimenez (6-3, 180) could draw some single coverage. Jiminez led the Patriots in receiving in his first season ever of football. He could be a break out player in 2011. Wilcots and senior Cameron Sisco (6-1, 205) both pursue the football extremely well. Sisco returns at linebacker where Wilcots could eventually wind up if he doesn’t play safety. The Patriots confidence has spiraled from last year. Games against the likes of Jenks, Broken Arrow and Norman look super tough but others on the schedule are managable. I see the potential of more than one win on the schedule.

osing season’s are rare in Stillwater. How rare? Before falling to 1-9 in 2010, the Pioneers last experienced a losing campaign in 1991. Firstyear head coach Tucker Barnard moves over from his defensive coordinator post at highly successful Shiloh Christian in Arkansas. Barnard is a graduate of Fairfax High School and Oklahoma State so he knows a thing or two about the area. He finds a team long on experience and a group eager to erase the memories of last year’s one-win season. Senior Jerame Littell (6-4, 205) enters his third season as the Pioneers’ starting quarterback. Littell can wing it and he has plenty of options to work with. Senior Davian Carter (5-11, 200) rushed for 1,000 yards as a junior but he’s just as dangerous as a receiver out of the backfield. Senior Jesse Vester (5-11, 195) and sophomore Jon Littell (6-2, 180) are the top threats at receiver. All of the offensive skill players will see time on defense. The younger Littell teams up with Vester at safety while senior Andrew Minter (5-8, 210) joins juniors Lucas Seacrist (5-10, 165) and Chuck Neal at cornerback. Barnard will be looking to fill some spots at linebacker. He will move senior Corey Hassel (5-9, 175) from safety to team up with a pair of seniors in Matt Harpe (5-8, 50

175) and Parker Zimmerman (6-0, 195). Defensive tackle Paul Wilson (6-2, 225) led the team in tackles from a down position. He possesses great work ethic and has a great motor. Several players have experience at defensive end. Seniors Caleb Russell (5-11, 195) and Jacob Davenport (6-0, 180) are joined by juniors Jonah Motley (6-3, 260) and Garrett McBroom (6-3, 210) there. The potential is there for a big turnaround at Stillwater. Combine a young and enthusiastic coach with a talented group of players and bouncing all the way back to above .500 seems well within reason. Back-to-back road games at Owasso and Enid are critical for the Pioneers to return to the playoffs.

Quick Hits - Stillwater has lost 14 straight games to Union. It’s last victory came in 1997 when Matt Holliday led the Pioneers to a 43-42 first round playoff win. - The Pioneers have two post-season victories in the last 10 years. Both wins came against Muskogee - Stillwater has lost its last six season openers. The 2011 opener comes a week late this year after Springdale, AR Har-Ber dropped off the schedule.

he Jays are poised for another run at the top of Class 5A. That is nothing new under the tenure of head coach Rafe Watkins. Guthrie has made the semifinals in four of the last five seasons and anything much less than that again would be considered a disappointment. Junior quarterback Bryan Dutton (5-9, 150) already owns almost every passing record in school history. Dutton is an all-around phenom. He won the 140-pound weight class as a sophmore in wrestling and has received many accolades on the baseball diamond. If there is a little concern on offense it is at receiver, where the top four players graduated. Senior Luke Davis (5-11, 75) is a three-year starter at tailback. He’s spent a lot of time in the secondary the past two seasons and now will assume the primary responsibility at tailback. Sophomore Kai Callins (5-10, 180) started

as a freshman at corner. Callins could line up at numerous positions on offense and Watkins sees his role similar to that of Kye Staley (Oklahoma State). The offensive line has starting experience at four of five positions, highlighted by Blake Belcher (6-5, 275). Stanford, Arizona and Oregon State are three of thirteen schools with offers out to Belcher. Eight starters return on defense including the entire linebacking corps. It is a group that Watkins believes could be as good as any he’s coached. Senior Landry Chappell (5-11, 220) is another state champion wrestler. He has led all of class 5A in tackles the past two seasons. Senior John Clark (5-9, 170) lines up along side Chappel with junior Richard Brothers (6-2, 205) at defensive end. Sophmore noseguard Trevor Blasingame (6-1, 255) shined after being inserted into the lineup last year and will only improve. Senior Zack Brown (6-2, 260) is back for his second year to start at defensive tackle. Sophomore Donovan Jordan (5-9, 160) and Callins are the Jays’ cornerbacks with Davis and Prague transfer Clint Shimek (6-2, 205) at safety. Shimek is a hard-hitter and raring to go after missing last year with a knee injury. Guthrie has a solid mixture of youth and experience. More importantly, the Jays’ are very talented. They are most certainly a contender to win Gold Ball #3 under Watkins.

t’s speed over size at Carl Albert in 2011. The Titans might not scare anyone upon arrival, but football is not played on a bus. Coach Gary Rose has a bunch of experience on defense and a team not afraid to make contact. We begin on offense and what will likely be a two quarterback system. Senior Dillon Dansby (5-11, 170) was lost to a torn ACL against Duncan and missed the rest of the season. Senior Taylor Hawkins (5-11, 180) assumed the position and performed admirably the rest of the way. Rose will use each player situationally this fall. Hawkins is a standout on defense and will move from strong safety to free safety where he can better utilize his great instincts. Both quarterbacks excel at running the football

yet the strength of the offensive attack is at receiver. Senior Tank Richmond (6-1, 175) is the top returning receiver. He will rotate in a group with fellow seniors Alex Polston (5-10, 160) and Darrain Winston (5-11, 185) among others. Polston and Winston both return to start at corner with junior Chevin Noone (5-11, 180) at strong safety. At linebacker, seniors Justin Love (5-10, 170), Jeremiah Reed (6-0, 205) and Kevin Jones (5-9, 185) all can fly to the football. Darren Colquitt (5-9, 215) is back for his third year to start at the viper or rush end position with fellow senior Willis Lusk (5-9, 235) holding down the interior at tackle. Senior Tyre LeBlanc (5-8, 190) is the top returning ball carrier at fullback. He will operate behind a double-tight formation that must find replacements at six of the seven starting positions from 2010. Senior Rayshawn Cato (6-3, 290) is the lone holdover at right guard. Rose expects Cato to do his fair share of clearing defenders out of the way. Kicker Easton Ramsey even gives the Titans an edge in close games. How much the rest of the group develops will determine just how far Carl Albert can go this fall. Rose has the formula for success about down pat at Carl Albert. The Titans will earn their stripes and experience against a brutal early season schedule and mount a late season charge for a title. That’s exactly the scenario I see at Carl Albert in 2011.

5A-1 Preview

Deer Creek Antlers

HC - Grant Gower - 4th year

n a little more than a decade, Deer Creek has grown from Class 2A all the way up to 5A and the transition seeems to be going quite well. The Antlers won eight games for the first time since 2001 and will have a nice collection of talent back in the fold for 2011. Junior quarterback Joel Blumenthal did a lot of good things under center as a sophomore. He has improved greatly over the spring and summer and will direct an offense emphasizing the pass more this fall. Seniors Hunter Dinkins and Kyle Kanaday are three-year starters. Dinkins is the go-to receiver and is able to get open by running precise routes. Kanaday can play in tight or split out

depending on the situation. Junior Brennan Miyake and sophomore Jared Rayburn will carry the football for the Antlers. Miyake has the most experience at the position but both players saw starting action on defense. Deer Creek lacks a little depth on the line but there is lots of size. Junior Austin Loomis is a two-way starter at center and middle linebacker. Bishop McGuinness transfer Clint Edgeman will step right into the fray in a two-way role as well. Juniors Tyler Follis (6-3, 260) and Brandon Wackerly (6-5, 330) occupy the down positions on defense. Follis is also penciled in at right tackle. Nolan Boyd (6-2, 190) is a two-time state champion wrestler. He led the Antlers in sacks and is back at one defensive end with Edgeman and Ian Smith (6-1, 205) at the other end. Loomis is a mainstay at linebacker with Kooper Ruminer (6-1, 200) and Grayson Johnson ready to step up to more prominant roles. Ruminer is especially ready for a great season after fully recovering from shoulder surgery. Junior Kale Jackson and Ottugo Ananbya are both track standouts that lend their talents to the Antlers’ secondary. Deer Creek should continue to make strides on the gridiron. They are a solid playoff team but ascending past Guthrie or Carl Albert will take some work, especially this fall.
