Pregame A letter from Brad Heath
20 | Cleveland Tigers Led by dynamic athlete and VYPE Top 100 selection Derek Reeves, the Tigers will have some potent scoring potential on the floor this season. On the girls side of things the Lady Tigers bring back two starters and are one of the fiercest and most competitive teams night in and night out.
22 | Cushing Tigers
Last season the Lady Tigers made it to the state tournament but with no starters returning this year question marks surround the team and new head coach Don Dodd. The Cushing boys on the other hand are a team with loads of experience that will rely on a blue-collar attitude to win games this year
29 | Frontier Mustangs
The Frontier boys fell on hard times last year but have a large number of returning players who now have a year of varsity time under their belt. The girls team is highly ranked and leaning on VYPE Top 100 player Marissa Goodman the Lady Mustangs have a dominant force in the paint they know they can always count on.
34 | Glencoe Panthers
The Glencoe boys reached the apex of Class A basketball and claimed a gold ball. With a VYPE Top 100 player in Ty Lazenby the Panthers are a good bet to be right in the mix again this season. The Glencoe girls also have plenty of young talent and should also put together plenty of wins this year

Hoop Dreams…. North Schools Gear Up For Basketball Season
Arthur Agee and William Gates may have been from Chicago but the North Region of the state boasts plenty of hardwood stars of their own. With football season over, we here at VYPE use this issue to give you an inside look at the basketball teams in the region and some key players to watch out for.
If you are a basketball fan this issue is for you. Check out what teams from all over the region have back and how several teams will try to fill large voids left by graduation. Can the Glencoe boys repeat as champions in Class A? Can the Frontier girls make it back to the top of the mountain? What about teams like Perkins-Tryon and Tonkawa who both lost all-state caliber players to graduation? VYPE answers all of those questions in this issue. The region does boast several VYPE Top 100 basketball players in Derek Reeves of Cleveland, Marissa Goodman of Frontier, Hailey Tucker of Bartlesville and Ty Lazenby of Glencoe. Being chosen to the prestigious list makes all four players eligible to win either the Mr. or Mrs. Oklahoma Basketball award so make sure you take time to cast your vote on our online poll at www.vypeok.com. Also make sure you follow us on Twitter @VYPEOK to get the most recent and up to date info from across the state.

Boosting Self-Esteem Healthy self esteem is a difficult characteristic to come by. Every individual needs to have self-esteem because it affects many aspects of one’s life. It allows one to live up to their potential throughout life. The following are tips to boost not only your self-esteem, but your child’s selfesteem as well.
How to boost your self-esteem
Peyton Stacy -Behavioral Health Rehabilitation Specialist
1. Embrace your positive qualities. Make a list of your skills, talents, abilities and anything else that makes you feel good about yourself. Try writing out a list of compliments that others have given you as well; reminding yourself that you are important.
2. Remember that you are a desirable package rather than any one individual quality. See the attractive package that you are and write down your best qualities. Hang them on your mirror for a reminder of how great you are! 3. Do not let any one mistake define you. Think back to when you messed up, felt small, or unsure. Force yourself to identify five things that went well in spite of your “mistake.” We are not defined by any one circumstance, but rather by a collection of our experiences.
4. Understand that mistakes make you who you are. Remember the phrase, “When one door closes, another one opens.” When you have made a mistake and believe your life is over, typically, you have another opportunity to make things right. 5. Believe in yourself. Remember to make yourself a priority some of the time. Ask for what you want or get into a position to make it happen. Understand that you cannot make everyone happy. Understand that at times you must disappoint others for the sake of taking care of yourself. How to boost your child’s self-esteem ! to 1. Be a positive role model. This is an important! factor
imply when caring for children. If you are hard on yourself or pessimistic about your own abilities, your child might eventually copy you. Stay positive and nurture your own abilities and they will have a wonderful role model. 2. Identify irrational beliefs. It is important to recognize your child’s irrational beliefs about themselves. Assisting children with more accurate perceptions, whether it be their abilities or attractiveness, help them be more realistic in analyzing themselves.
3. Give positive and realistic feedback. For example, your child might not be good at math. If they get a problem incorrect, reassure them in their academic ability. Tell them that some children have to work harder than others on certain subjects. This does not mean they are not capable, it only means that they might need extra practice. 4. Cooperation over competition. Mentoring programs in which older children help younger children with academics or sports can boost self-esteem in both children. Activities that support cooperation instead of competition are benefiting towards self-esteem. Not only does it benefit the child who might be struggling with reading, it also boosts the abilities in the child who is teaching. 5. Create a safe environment. Be sure that your home is as safe and loving towards the child as possible. Children who are neglected and abused are at greater risk for low self-esteem. They might start to believe that they have no control of their surroundings and develop a helpless feeling. Sources:

Stillwater High School’s power forward Adrienne Marie Blakey is Hideaway Pizza’s Character Counts Athlete of the Month. Blakey sports a 4.0 GPA but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Blakey is an active member in the Stillwater FFA chapter and FCCLA. She also volunteers for CSBC nursery Habitat for Humanity. An outspoken leader on the team, Blakey takes pride in pushing her team to be better. “I am definitely not the best basketball player on our team, but I push myself and my teammates to give 110% in everything we do.” Blakey is seeking academic and leadership scholarships in order to attend OSU’s Osteopathic Medicine School; where she hopes to be an anesthesiologist. Blakey, a self-proclaimed bookworm, loves competing in public speaking competitions and showing cattle in her spare time.
The Stillwater High School Pioneer’s very own Brett Budke has been chosen for Hideaway Pizza’s Character Counts Athlete of the Month. Proving to be a versatile player, Budke has proven over time that he can play both forward positions when needed. As he has matured, Budke has evolved into a tangible leader on and off the court. Although he hasn’t narrowed it down to any particular place, Brett’s goal is to play basketball at the next level. As far as his career aspirations, Brett’s goals are close to home. “[Eventually], I would love to follow in my dad’s footsteps and become a basketball coach.” When he isn’t working on his game, Brett enjoys spending time with his friends and volunteering at his his church, St. Francis.

Both players are juniors and both made key contributions last season with Albritton averaging 10.6 points per game and Adams averaging 6.4 points and 5.9 rebounds per game. Fellow junior guards Joe Rupp (5-10), Logan Lewis (5-8) and Braden Sweet (5-10) should all also challenge for major playing time this year. Area Basketball Previews Blackwell Maroons GIRLS Wade Wright (12th year) 12-13 Record: 6-17 The Lady Maroons have struggled over the last several years but with a veteran group at the helm this year head coach Wade Wright hopes things go a bit differently this season. Senior point guard Tara Lucas (5-7) will be the maestro of the Blackwell offense this year and be counted upon to help get her teammates quality shots with her passing ability. Fellow senior guards Jennifer Arnold (5-6) and Faith Ashford (5-6) are hard-nosed scrappy players that aren’t afraid of the big shot. The Lady Maroon’s top scoring threat though is junior forward Ireya Calderon (5-9). Last season Calderon averaged 13 points per game but has the ability to go for 20 nearly every time she steps on the floor. Joining Calderon in the post will be senior Kristen Simunek (5-9). “We have a good group of girls returning this year and are looking to improve as a team,” Coach Wright said. A team that grinded their way to a very solid 18-7 record last year, the Maroons have a good amount of depth and will attempt to use their speed and quickness to win games this year. Senior guard Trey Hubbard (5-11) is a dead-eye three-point shooter who also has the ability to put the ball on the floor and get to the rim who is expected to have a break-out season this year. Junior John Strahorn (5-10) didn’t see much playing time last season but is an athletic presence on the perimeter. Running the show at the point guard spot will be junior Brady Burtner (5-10). Burtner is a three-sport athlete but on the basketball floor he shines as a lockdown defender and a very creative passer. In the post the team will count on undersized forwards Matt Bennett (6-1) and Billy Moore (6-1) to be active on the glass and provide legitimate scoring threats. “This is going to be a fun group to coach because we have lots of competition at every position. We should improve a great deal as the season goes along and the players mesh with the new system,” coach Valerius said. Trey Hubbard 5-11 G Sr. VYPEOK.COM

GIRLS Don Dodd (1st year) 12-13 Record: 25-2 Outlook: Just like Norman Dale, Don Dodd had been away from coaching for awhile but when the Cushing Lady Tigers job opened up Dodd just couldn’t say no. Dodd takes the reigns after a 25-2 season last year for the Lady Tigers but returns no starters making it a good news-bad news situation. Sophomore guard Megan Stump (5-5) will guide the Lady Tigers this year and team with junior Brooke Hightower (5-8) in the backcourt. Meanwhile on the interior senior forward Erin Anberg (5-9) will give the team a much needed dose of senior leadership. Working with Anberg in the frontcourt will be junior center Hannah Burris (6-0) and freshman forward Karlie Jones (5-7). Megan Stump 5-5 G So. Brooke Hightower 5-8 G Jr. Karlie Jones 5-7 F Fr. BOYS David Day (1st year) 12-13 Record: 14-7 Outlook: A senior laden team, the Tigers will count on a blue-collar attitude and a strong work ethic to reach their goals this season. At the guard spots athletic players like seniors Keegan Myers (6-1) and Jai Conley (5-11) will anchor the lineup. Senior Anthony Adkisson (6-2) will also be a major part of the Cushing backcourt this season. In the paint the Tigers will turn to senior Drew Wilson (6-2) and junior Tyler Watkins (6-4) to do most of the heavy lifting. The Tigers’ experience and maturity should also give them an edge as they adjust to first-year head coach David Day’s system. “I am very excited about this year. We have a group of talented seniors with a strong work ethic,” Day said. “We also have a group of talented underclassmen that have the ability to push the upperclassmen in practice.” Drew Wilson 6-2 F Sr. Keegan Myers 6-1 G Sr. Jai Conley 5-11 G Sr. Tyler Watkins 6-4 F Jr. Anthony Adkisson 6-2 G Sr.

GIRLS Joe Jacobs (2nd year) 12-13 Record: 24-5 Outlook: With a dynamic group of guards the Lady Bucs will rely on their pressure, trapping defense to keep opponents off balance and get easy baskets in transition. Senior guards Logan Burgess (5-6) and Omega Reese (5-5) will lead that attack this season. Last year Burgess averaged eight points and five assists per game while Reese put up eight points and six assists per contest. Those point totals are expected to go up this season with both players stepping into more marquee roles due to the graduation of all-state center Taylor McAreavey. Sophomore guard Samantha Allen (5-6) is a slasher in the purest sense of the word and averaged six points and four rebounds last year. Other players such as junior Valerie Allen (5-7) and senior Rebecca Means (5-8) will be cracking the starting lineup for the first time this year and will need to find their bearings quickly to help the Lady Bucs make a third-straight trip to the state tournament. The Bucs will rely heavily on junior guard Chantay Sigwing who has the ability to go for 20 points on any given night. A pure shooter, Sigwing is also not bashful about taking a big shot in a clutch situation and has the killer mentality coaches love to see in shooters. Inside the Bucs also have a huge weapon in senior center Ryan Fehring. Senior guards Ben Hook and Brekken Grein are also big threats to score from behind the arc. Gilbert looks to run an eight player rotation and says that might be one player too many. “It’s kind of hard to run an eight player rotation and get enough things done that you want.” Gilbert knows a seven player rotation would be ideal but is excited to have this many capable players. How long have you been involved in FCA? I joined FCA my freshman year.
Who influenced you to join? When I was a freshman I had two seniors that I looked up to who influenced me in joining. Candace Caldwell and Andrea Gimondo were great team members and role models. How has FCA made an impact in your life on the field and off the field? As a captain of my softball team we say a prayer before every game for the safety of both teams and to keep our head up no matter the outcome. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? You can do anything through Christ. God blessed me with my talent to play softball and has helped me reach my goal of playing college at a D1 School. Go WSU Shockers.
How have you used your beliefs or association with FCA to help others or spread the word? Each member of my team participates in our team prayer by choice. I started this tradition to help show other teammates who they can turn to when all else fails. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” -Philippians 4:13. It’s my favorite because a big part of the game is to be mentally tough. I pray for strength before each game to help lead my team and be a good role model.
