A letter from Austin Chadwick
12 | Triple Play Tyson Reeder may only be a freshman at Edmond North, but he’s proved himself as one of the upcoming golfers in the state. His father Dillon Reeder and Edmond North golf coach Jeff Doherty square off in this months Triple Play!
14 | Grill-Laura Clay The Westmoore Jaguars crosscountry and track coach Laura Clay is considered to be one of the top coaches in the state and this year the OCA will recognize her by inducting her into the Hall of Fame. Steve Marshall sat down with coach Clay for her thoughts on the honor and what it means to coach at Westmoore.
20 | Diamond Madness
Carl Albert spent much of the season ranked in the top five and figured to be a favorite heading into post-season play. Edmond North had an unlikely run into the finals as Tyler Welch took to the mound for the final game. Check out this recap of all the action.
Well Done Oklahoma As we wrap up the spring sports, we can’t help but to think how lucky we are as fans and high school sports enthusiasts. I had the privilege of being an All-State athlete in Oklahoma and watching from the other side, it is a blessing to be in a situation where we are coving these great kids, teams, schools, and communities. We have it all in our spring sports recaps. All of the baseball, soccer, tennis, track, slow-pitch softball, and golf action will be seen in this issue. Couple that with the ever-coveted All-VYPE teams of Central and Eastern Oklahoma. Laura Clay has been a mainstay as a coach in track and crosscountry and she has been awarded with even more honors. Check out our one-on-one with her.
The May issue is finally here and we are proud to bring you all the spring sports action. Not taking anything away from former NBA great Karl Malone, but like the “Mailman,” we always deliver. Sit back and enjoy. Also, if there is ever anything that needs to be brought to our attention or anything that our readers disagree or agree with, we want your feedback. Let us know what we’re doing right or what we need to do better. We love to hear from readers. Or if you have an event, a team or an athlete we need to cover, give us the heads-up. Send your comments to brad.heath@vype.com. —Brad Heath, Editor
More Baseball If baseball is considered one of the big three sports, (football, basketball and baseball) then why doesn’t it get as much coverage? I think you should also do a baseball preview like the other two.
Tom H. Edmond, OK
Oklahoma Hardball Your article on the top players in baseball for 2012 was interesting. Several players every year fall through the cracks, but you guys picked some really good players from both sides of the state. Good work.

Editor’s Note: Thank you for the email Tom. We agree that baseball should get as much coverage as possible. The difference is baseball is competing against more sports for coverage. Football shares time with volleyball, softball and cross-country and they all end fair quickly. Basketball shares time with swimming and wrestling. So you see what baseball is up against. But please keep the emails coming. We love the comments and the ideas.
VYPE & Charity Work Hello VYPE team. How often do you guys help charitable organizations? And maybe your donation is time and not money. I ask because if you’re interested we could always use some help. Thanks.
Jenna B. Oklahoma City, OK
Editor’s Note: Jenna, let me know who you’re with and I’m sure we can work something out. We have supported charities in the past and will continue to do so in the future.
Where Oh Where has the Soccer Gone? Are you guys going to ignore soccer this year?

Touchback Thanks for advertising the movie Touchback. It’s a great movie and more people should watch it. A great message and it features a local guy that people should support. Touchback is one I’ll buy when released on DVD for sure.

Qualified Students can go to college with Oklahoma's Promise.
N
ot every Oklahoma high school athlete will earn a full-ride athletic scholarship for college. However, Oklahoma students from families whose annual income is $50,000 or less can earn college tuition through Oklahoma’s Promise, a state scholarship program. This year’s deadline to enroll is July 2. The scholarship pays tuition at any Oklahoma public college or university until the student completes a bachelor’s degree or for five years, whichever comes first. It will also cover a portion of tuition at an accredited Oklahoma private institution or for courses at public technology centers that are approved for credit toward an Associate in Applied Science degree at a public college. The scholarship does not cover the cost of fees, books, or room and board. “Our state made a promise to qualified students and their families that the state of Oklahoma would pay for their college tuition if the students committed themselves in high school to making good grades, taking the required coursework and staying out of trouble. We have, and will continue to keep that promise,” said Chancellor of the Oklahoma State System of Higher Education, Glen D. Johnson. “Oklahoma’s Promise is a chance for a better future for students, their families and the state of Oklahoma.”
“Oklahoma’s Promise meant the opportunity for me to further my education and has helped me in so many ways. I will forever be grateful that I had the privilege to be a part of such a great program,” said D’Andre Fisher, a track and field athlete in high school and college, an Oklahoma’s Promise recipient and 2011 University of Oklahoma graduate. “Oklahoma’s Promise has taught me to never give up on my dreams and that with hard work I am able to achieve any goals set in front of me.”
Students must enroll in Oklahoma’s Promise during eighth, ninth or 10th grade, and their family’s annual income must not exceed $50,000 when they apply. A student’s family income must also not exceed $100,000 at the time the student goes to college. Students who are finishing their 10thgrade year will not be eligible to enroll after the July 2, 2012 deadline. To receive the scholarship at graduation, students must achieve a minimum 2.5 (C+) GPA in 17 core courses that prepare them for college and an overall GPA of 2.5 or better for all courses in grades nine through 12. Oklahoma’s Promise graduates also must attend class regularly and refrain from drug and alcohol abuse and delinquent acts.
Oklahoma high schools are proud when the hard work of their student athletes results in a state championship. Oklahoma’s Promise is also proud to recognize the hard-working high schools and their students. In 2011, seven Oklahoma high schools were named “Oklahoma’s Promise 2011 State Champions” for leading the state in the number of graduates who qualified to receive Oklahoma’s Promise: Class B – Wapanucka Class A – Hydro-Eakly Class 2A – Colcord Class 3A – ASTEC Charter School, Oklahoma City Class 4A – Santa Fe South, Oklahoma City Class 5A – Northwest Classen, Oklahoma City Class 6A – Broken Arrow
The Oklahoma Legislature created Oklahoma’s Promise in 1992 as an incentive for middle and high school students to commit to academic success and prepare for college. Since the start of the program, nearly 50,000 students have received more than $300 million in scholarships. Oklahoma’s Promise is a program of the Oklahoma State Regents for Higher Education and is recognized by many as America’s best college access program. It is considered a model program that emphasizes both academic preparation and financial support for college. For more information about Oklahoma’s Promise or to apply online, visit www.okpromise.org. Information is also available by emailing okpromise@osrhe.edu or by calling (800) 858-1840.
Edmond North Claims First Westside title in 17 years Photo by Rip Stell
Huskies ride hot streak to claim Class 6A behind Tyler Welch, Scott Johnson, and Joe Robinson.
“Obviously from our standpoint we want to believe that we can go do,” coach Karl King said. “We were definitely the underdog. While a goal for regionals you like to host but to get out of any regional, you have to beat somebody pretty good. Any road to a state title in Oklahoma is pretty tough. There’s good baseball here.”
By Lynn Jacobsen
6A Boys
Edmond North’s Cinderella run through the playoffs ended with the first title by a West side school in the state’s largest classification since 1995. The Huskies blanked top-ranked and defending state champion Broken Arrow 3-0 behind a strong pitching performance from Tyler Welch. The senior right-hander allowed just two hits.
Scott Johnson
Ranked 15th heading into state, the Huskies (24-15) defeated Owasso in the quarterfinals and Yukon in the semis to face Broken Arrow. “For us, our emphasis was on the middle part of the game and our kids did a good job of dealing with that,” King said. “That’s a tribute to our kids. The kids just kept playing. They developed quiet confidence.”
Joe Robinson
As for being the team to break the East’s stranglehold in the state’s largest classification, King said, “It’s become kind of a monster. To be the team that (breaks it), is a special distinction. Any type of streak, the people on outside looking in make it bigger than it is. We wanted to do this for our program.” Quarterfinals Edmond Santa Fe 4 - Stillwater 1 Yukon 14 - Jenks 8 Broken Arrow 9 - Moore 1 Edmond North 4 - Owasso 2 Semifinals Broken Arrow 5 - Edmond Santa Fe 2 Edmond North 4 - Yukon 1 Finals @ Oral Roberts University Edmond North 3 - Broken Arrow 0

Softball Class 6A Top-ranked Westmoore (40-2) overcame a 5-2 deficit, scoring 14 runs in three innings in an 18-7 victory over No. 7 Union to capture the school’s 10th slow pitch state title.
The Jaguars scored 41 runs in three tournament games. Still, they needed some defense to eke out an 11-9 win in the opener over Tecumseh then trounced Moore 12-0 in the semifinals. In the title game, Westmoore and Union combined 41 hits in the game, 27 by the Jaguars, who were not to be denied of their 10th overall title and first since 2007. Alecia Gutierrez led Westmoore offensively, going 4-for-5 at the plate. Mariah Peace was 3-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs. Patty Padgett and Alysa Phillips also homered for the Jaguars.
“It’s unreal,” Peace said of winning the title.
Jaguars’ coach Steve Schwarz praised his team for battling back.
“The way they fought every inning, they gave 100 percent, smooth line drives, level swings,” Schwarz said. “We’ve worked on that all year long and it paid off.”
Union started the year 2-6 but got things going late to reach the title game after winning the fast-pitch championship in the fall.
Class 5A
Ninth-ranked Tahlequah Sequoyah (27-11) captured its first slow-pitch title with a 5-1 victory over No. 2 Morris.
The Indians lost three of their last four regular season games but got on a roll in the playoffs. The championship game featured
a rematch of regional opponents Sequoyah and Morris.
Courtney Jones allowed just one run and scattered six hits for the victory. She was aided by some nifty defensive play with a pair of double plays. The Indians went down in order in the first three innings before scoring three runs in the fourth and two in the sixth. Outfielder Saharra Henson had a two-run double in the fourth and singled and scored on Megan Towie’s two-run single in the sixth.
Madison McGraw
“At first we started out a little rocky, a little slow, a little unsure,” Henson said. “In districts and regionals we finally got going.” Morris scored its lone run in the first. But the Eagles got going late, scoring three runs in the fourth and two more in the sixth.

didn’t think one run was going to win it,” Grigg said. “We were a little nervous. Both teams were. We just kept saying look down the barrel of the bat and get some runners on. It just kind of worked out. “We hit the ball really well during districts then hit a lull in regionals. We lost to Morris 2-1. After that, I changed our lineup and that really helped us. We went to the semis all four years in fast-pitch and now they see they can get over the hump. Of our 11 losses, 10 were to 6A teams.”
Class 4A
Top-ranked Dale (27-5) also collected its first slow-pitch crown with a 13-2 win over Latta. It was the second title overall for the Lady Pirates, who won a fast-pitch title in 2003. Samantha Berry homered twice in the 19-hit barrage by the Lady Pirates. Danielle Dockrey also homered and teammate Jaelin Flewallen had a pair of extra base hits with a double and tworun triple in the sixth. “We’ve got seven girls who can hit it out of the park at any time,” Dale coach Andy Powell said. “We’ve got as much power as anybody in the state of Oklahoma, any class. We played Westmoore earlier this year and we went to international tiebreaker to decide that. We can play with anyone in any class.”
Dale grabbed a 5-0 lead in the first inning, picked up two more in the second and polished off the championship with six runs in the top of the fifth.
Latta scored two runs in the fourth on a two-run blast by Keeli Kessinger. Powell knew five years ago he had the talent to contend eventually. “We told these girls when they were seventh and eighth graders they were the group we would win a state championship with,” Powell said. “They have worked harder than any group I’ve ever had. We knew it was going to be a special group and to cap it off with a state championship, it feels really good.
“We lose just one senior. We have a heck of a nucleus and we’re excited about it.”
Class 3A
Top-ranked Rattan (34-8) was the only repeat champion in slow pitch softball this season. But the Rams had to battle back from a 4-2 deficit against secondranked Fletcher to take the 3A title. The Rams solidified the title with a three-run burst in the sixth inning.
Rattan opened the tournament with a 7-3 win over 14th-ranked Navajo then ended No. 4 Wilson’s season with a 14-4 victory in the semifinals.
Class 2A
After a close call in the opening round game of the state tournament, No.1 Fort Cobb-Broxton got serious. The Mustangs eked out a 6-4 win over No. 8 Soper then cruised past sixth-ranked Stonewall 10-3 in the semifinals. They saved their best for last though, romping past third-ranked Roff 13-3.
The Mustangs found themselves down 2-1 entering the fifth inning but scored four in the fifth, one in the sixth and seven in the final inning. This was Fort Cobb-Broxton’s fifth consecutive trip to the state championship game.
Class A
Top-ranked Red Oak (29-2) used a pair of run-rule victories in the first two rounds of state to advance to the title game and clinch the Class A title with an 8-6 victory over second-ranked Leedey.

The Redskins took a 1-0 lead in the first half on an unassisted goal by Cristian Mata, who will play for the University of Tulsa next year. Little Axe tied the game on a penalty kick in the second then added the gamewinner off a Matt Gann assist with 4:26 left in the extra period. The Timberwolves, who were ranked second, finished with a perfect 16-0 record.
For the girls, Moving up a class did not faze Bishop Kelley one bit. The Comets captured their 13th state championship in the last 14 years. And they did it convincing fashion. Kelley outscored 6A opponents 68-9,
including a 4-1 victory over Edmond North in the title game this year. The biggest difference in the jump to 6A was “the little things”, said head coach Troy Tokarchik.
“There were a lot more meaningful games,” he said. “We had one 10-0 game all year where we’re usually used to all but one or two games in district being 10-0. Being in 6A requires us to play tougher competition twice a week. In 5A you can legitimately make it to the semis without having to play tough competition. In 6A, you get it the first round.”
Juniors Claire Kelley and Katie Sprouse combined for 35 of their team’s 68 goals, with 20 and 15, respectively.

Caitlyn Hanslovan scored three of her four goals in less than nine minutes to lead Verdigris to a 4-1 victory over Bethany. It was the Cardinals’

Golf Class 6A Edmond North set a state record for consecutive state championships, winning its eighth consecutive title this spring. The Huskies finished with an 894 team score after rounds of 300 and 293 on the first day and a 301 on the final day of competition.
Four of five Edmond North starters finished in the Top 10, led by Nick Heinen with a 217, second overall to low medalist Max McGreevy of Edmond Santa Fe. Others to register Top 10 finishes included Hayden Wood (219), Sam Humphreys (228) and Michael Hampton (230). Freshman Tyson Reeder finished with a 242.
“We’ve had a really good run here,” Edmond North coach Jeff Doherty said. “This is the first year in last three (that) I really felt like we were the best team. My kids just feel like they can win. It’s gotten to be an epidemic. They go out and just don’t think anyone can beat them. They’re not cocky, just very confident. They just feel like they can’t be beat.”
As a team, the Huskies shot 5-under par on the first hole of the final day of competition, with an eagle from Reeder, a par from Humphreys and birdies from Hampton, Heinen and Wood. “That was huge way to start,” Doherty said. “It was just a barrage.”
Edmond Memorial finished second with a 921 score, followed by Jenks with a 936, Edmond Santa Fe with a 947 and Broken Arrow, fifth overall with a 954.
In girls, Union successfully defended its Class 6A crown, cruising to a 25-stroke win over runner-up Edmond North. The Lady Redskins fired back-to-back rounds of 303, led by Emma Allen and Anna Kim, who each finished tied for second at 149. Edmond North’s Allison Sell was low medalist with a 147 score. The Lady Redskins had four players finish in the Top 10 with Nadia Majidi and Erica Carangalan at fifth and 10th, respectively. Majidi shot rounds of 76 and 75 to finish with a 151 and Carangalan celebrated her
18th birthday with a 158 overall. Union won 19 of 20 events the last two years under head coach Lindsay Jones. And with only Carangalan graduating, the Lady Redskins look to continue their domination.
Trent Newborn
“Last year we won state by 21 strokes and this year by 25,” Jones said. “Top to bottom, 1-5, we have arguably one of the top teams in girl’s golf in Oklahoma.”
In the 10 victories this year, Union won by an average 20.3 strokes. A year ago, Majidi missed qualifying for varsity. This year, she won or tied for the win in six of the 10 tournaments in which Union played. “She’s had a great year,” Jones said. “She worked really hard in the off-season and played really well this year.” Jenks finished third followed by Broken Arrow in fourth and Mustang in fifth place.

“We were competitive all year long so I would be lying if I said we weren’t expecting to compete,” Kelley coach Shawn Lawhorn said. “We tracked the West team scores and felt like we had a chance. Will is really a tough kid. He played linebacker for us and gave that up to focus on golf. He’s a team leader. I think it surprised him that he played that well. His chip-in was difficult. Andrew Alonso, our only senior, birdied the same playoff hole.” Ardmore’s Jacob Oaks won a playoff for low medalist honors, finishing with a 221 scorer. El Reno’s Logan Gray was second followed by Murphy in third place with a 234. How long have you been involved in FCA? I have been involved in FCA since 7th grade, so about 6 years... Feels longer then that!
Who influenced you to get involved? My parents have influenced me the most. They got started with FCA thought the help of Lacey Leifeste and she really helped make FCA so awesome.
How has your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My beliefs have helped me as an athlete by letting me always remember who brought me where I am today, it’s helped me remember who is in control and that everything happens for a reason and that is to give God the glory.
What is your favorite bible verse and why? My favorite bible verse is proverbs 3:5, I write this on my arm before every track meet to help me remember to not stress and trust my God. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
How have you used your beliefs or your association in FCA to help others or spread the word? I’ve used my association with FCA to help me branch out. I feel like I can be myself when I go to a FCA function (especially camp!) or when I’m with other Christians, and I bring that back home with me to talk to my peers at my work and at school who aren’t believers.

It was heartwrenching for Ada to lose the third set after being down 5-0. That’s great tennis.” The good news for Metro is that only two seniors – Emily Points and Orr.
“We aren’t very deep but we have some promising players coming up,” Henley said. Midway’s Taylor Jordan defeated Metro Christian’s Reynolds Chew in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1 to take the No. 1 singles title. In No. 2 doubles, Ada’s Taylor Alexander and Menee Thomsen defeated Perry’s Emily Brown and Kayla Woods, 6-3, 6-0.
