OFFENSE Back-to-back 3-7 seasons have the Plainsmen hungry for wins this year, but those wins will have to be hard fought according to head coach Steve Chard. “We are in a very competitive district. There will be a lot of close games so whoever executes better at the end of games will be playing in week 11,” Chard said. Helping the Plainsmen win those close games will be offensive lineman and VYPE Top 100 selection Estevan Arana (6-6, 290, Sr.). Another key member of the Enid offensive line will be center Joel Sanchez (5-11, 225, Sr.). Arana and Sanchez will be tasked with helping to clear a path for speedy running back Raheem Mitchell (5-7, 165, Sr.) who ran for 1,245 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. Another versatile

player running through holes opened up by the Enid offensive line will be Devin Pratt (5-10, 190, Jr.). Getting time at both running back and as a slot receiver Pratt will be expected to improve on a sophomore campaign that saw him rush for 400 yards and rack up another 191 receiving yards

along with four touchdowns. Dual threat quarterback Fred Lawrence (6-2, 190, Sr.) will also play a vital role on the offensive

DEFENSE Running a base 3-4 blitzing system on defense the Plainsmen will be led by Pratt, who Chard calls a “very talented outside linebacker who is great in press coverage.” Last season Pratt recorded 48 tackles and two interceptions proving he is a very versatile player capable of making plays all over the field. The heart of the Enid defense however may be linebacker Hank Shulz (5-10, 197, Sr.) who made 81 total

tackles last year. On the defensive line Austin Duplantis (6-2, 210, Sr.) had five sacks last season and will once again try to cause havoc in the backfield as he rushes the passer from his spot at defensive end. The defensive backfield will also feature two playmaking corners according to Chard in the form of Jesse Cartwright (5-10, 160, Sr.) and D’Angelo Williams (5-10, 145, Sr.). Last season Cartwright had three interceptions while Williams had 32 tackles plus four deflected passes. Playing in the same district as highly favored Midwest City and Lawton the Enid defense will need to utilize their speed and playmaking ability to give the Plainsmen a shot at making the playoffs.

McKinle Hodges – Chisholm Softball Chisholm senior McKinle Hodges is a crucial part of the Lady Longhorns softball team as one of the team’s top pitchers and starting at third base when she is not in the circle. McKinle’s activities aren’t only limited to the diamond however.

Outside of school Hodges is a member of the WillowView United Methodist Church youth group and plays on the Oklahoma Pride softball team. After high school Hodges says she plans on attending UCO to major in business. When asked about her goals for the fastpitch season this fall Hodges kept things pretty simple.

Mom of the

Month Stephanie Sears - Enid Mom Stephanie Sears, the mother of Enid High School softball player and pom squad member Brooke Sears is the VYPE Mom of the Month. Currently Stephanie has two other daughters besides Brooke in the Enid school system with younger sisters Blair and Blake both playing sports for the Pacers either at the junior high or high school level. Brooke raved over her mother’s selflessness when asked why her mom should be Mom of the Month. “My mom deserves to be the Mom of the Month because between my four sisters and I she has a lot on her plate. I don’t know how she does it,” Brooke said. “She pushes me to do my best whether it’s in school or for a sport. She loves us and would do anything for her family. She works for child welfare because she is so compassionate towards others.” Stephanie also supports her children by helping with the concession stand at Enid sporting events. For her tireless efforts to support her family Stephanie Sears is the Mom of the Month.

Northeastern Oklahoma State University and her masters from the University of Central Oklahoma, has been teaching in Enid for 25 years. Before coming to Enid, she taught in Missouri for one year working with special needs students by helping them learn skills they could apply to the real world once they graduated from high school. Now Hughes-Root specializes in working with children with Autism. “I’ve worked with special education kids since the beginning. Working with kids with Autism was always interesting; they see the world in such black and white. Specializing with working with those kids just seemed like

such a great opportunity for me to do something I enjoyed and continue to learn,” Hughes-Root said. Teaching for as long as Hughes-Root has would be tough to imagine for some but the veteran teacher said that it is the students who keep her coming back year after year. “It’s the kids, the students. You get to see them grow up having them in your room for all four years of high school,” Hughes-Root said. “You really want to see them do well. You invest yourself in them and you try to do all you can to work with them so that they get all they can out of their education.”

Enid Volleyball 2014 Young Squad Looking to Continue Winning in Enid By Sarah Dewberry The Enid Pacers said goodbye to a huge chunk of their team in May. With volleyball season right around the corner here in Oklahoma, Enid looks to continue their impressive run from last season, despite losing several seniors and having a fairly young squad. As Enid head coach Steve Bloom enters his fifth season, he and his team are looking to rebuild, make a run deep into the postseason and make their way back to regionals. Last year, the Pacers were 25-10 and got knocked out in regionals in the championship round. This year, they look to get better as a team. “We have a lot of spots open this year since we had a lot of seniors leave,” Bloom said. “But as the girls entered team camp, the coaches and I saw a lot of players improve.” A lot can happen in the span of five years for a volleyball team. For Enid, that rings true. The volleyball team has improved tremendously in five years. In Bloom’s first two seasons at the helm, the volleyball team went a combined 16-38. By the time Bloom entered his third and fourth seasons, everything seemed to come together as his team finished with a combined 50-20 record. This season, expectations are high as younger players are stepping out to make a name for themselves. “Expectations for my players this year is to continue their level of play this year,” Bloom said. “I

also plan to see my players improve from where we were last year, even though we will have a lot of young players this season.” In hopes of being competitive, Bloom and his coaches have quite a bit of players standing out in team camp. “Over the course of the team camp, we saw a lot of improvements from a lot of players,” Bloom said. “We have seen a lot of players step up their level of play.” With five seniors looking to lead the team this season, several sophomores and juniors will be looking to add whatever they can to the squad. “The coaching staff wants everything that is best for our players,” Bloom said. “We have been very pleased with the job the middle school has done. They’ve been producing great players and it’s now starting to show at our high school level.” Although no star players have emerged from camp, Bloom likes what he sees as the players begin to find their roles in the rotation. With so many players making so much progress as a team, Bloom is excited to see what this season has to offer.

Molly Bloom “The players are continually working on their communicating and working as a team by communicating as a team and I am really liking what I see.”

Last 5 Years: 2013 - 9-2 2012 - 5-5 2011- 4-7 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 8-5 Enrollment: 265

Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Okeene Sept. 12 – vs. Fairview Sept. 19 – at Thomas Sept. 26 – at Newkirk Oct. 3 – vs. Watonga Oct. 10 – vs. Alva Oct. 16 – vs. Tonkawa Oct. 24 – at Pawnee Oct. 31 – at Perry Nov. 7 – vs. Hennessey

OFFENSE After putting together one of the best seasons in the recent history of the program the Longhorns are looking to finish even better than last season’s 9-2 record. “We are very excited coming off a 9-2 season and our first playoff appearance since 2002. We will have strong numbers in all classes that will allow for good depth,” head coach Joey Reinart said. The Longhorns will again run a Double Wing formation offense led by talented quarterback Taggart Brown (6-0, 195, Sr.). Last season Brown threw for 1,762 yards and 18 touchdowns and will occupy an even bigger role in his senior campaign this fall. Britton Yunker (5-10, 165, Sr.) will start at running back for the longhorns this season after rushing for 283 yards last season as the team’s number two back. Other key skill position players for the Longhorns this year will be Austin Swann (6-0, 180, Sr.) at wide receiver and Karsten Brady (6-0, 200, Sr.) at tight end. In 2013 Swann compiled 495 yards receiving and nine touchdowns while Brady had 351

yards receiving and six touchdowns. On the offensive line James Lee (6-6, 255, Sr.) will be the Longhorns anchor.

DEFENSE With eight defensive starters returning from last season the Longhorns will be very strong all over the field on this side of the ball. Linebacker Brock Chance will be a key contributor again this season after making 72 tackles and two sacks last season. Brady and Yunker will also occupy linebacker spots this year. As juniors Yunker and Brady made 55 and 59 tackles respectively. Yunker also had two interceptions while Brady added three tackles for loss, three sacks, one forced fumble and one fumble recovery. The Longhorns will also be very strong in the secondary this year with Bailey Cross roaming the back end of the defense along with Swann. A year ago Swann made 49 tackles, three tackles for loss and six interceptions while Cross made 43 tackles of his own to go along with one interception.

Oklahoma Bible Academy Trojans COACH: Mark Boyd ENROLLMENT: 152 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 12-2 2010 - 8-3 2011 - 3-7 2012 - 2-8 2013 - 5-6

OFFENSE The Trojans return seven starters and head coach Mark Boyd has several keys players back with more experience and a renewed desire to win. “We are good at the skill positions with a developing offensive line. We’re also developing a new running back,” said Boyd. One position that appears to be solid is quarterback. Baylor Boyd (6-0, 175, Jr.) returns to lead the Trojans. Boyd has several players in his passing

arsenal including Preston Atwood (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Jonny Volpe (6-0, 180, Sr.). These two athletes give Boyd an opportunity to stretch the field and keep the defense on their heels. Camden Roggow (6-0, 155, Jr.) is a quick, elusive runner that coach Boyd could use in the slot. Up front the offensive line is anchored by Nathan Meier (6-0, 190, Sr.). Meier will also see time on the defensive side of the ball at linebacker.

DEFENSE Boyd joins Meier at linebacker, while Emmanuel Walker (6-1, 190, Sr.) will step into one of the defensive line spots. Look for Atwood in the defensive secondary with Virgil Irwin (6-0, 195, Jr.) at corner. Irwin has tremendous size and speed for a corner. “As always everything revolves around the

Light has a long list of accomplishments that includes starting her own business raising show pigs. “Through FFA and my Supervised Agricultural Experience, I realized my dream of entrepreneurship by establishing my own business in the swine production industry, “Light’s Out Showpigs.” It is a first generation family owned and operated business focused on raising show pigs and commercial pigs. In addition to learning the necessary activities for day-to-day operations, I am learning about the challenges, risks, and rewards of small business ownership. This year, one of the highlights of the operation was watching my younger sister, Ashlan, drive the NW District Champion Spot Barrow that was bred, born and raised by Light’s Out Showpigs. Her senior year will be a busy one as she takes over as the President of the FFA chapter at Garber High School. “As President of the Garber FFA Chapter, and in addition to participating in the traditional FFA activities such as livestock showing and speeches, I plan for our Chapter to implement an agricultural awareness program for fifth through seventh grade Garber students as well as a community service project focused on feeding the hungry. Any extra time I can find, I will spend with my family and supporting my younger siblings – Brooklan, Weston and Ashlan – in their activities at Garber and teaching them about the operation of Light’s Out Showpigs so that we can build a family legacy together.”

Light plans on attending Oklahoma State University and pursue an Agricultural Economics/Agricultural Education double major. Light offers this advice to younger students considering the FFA, “Just join, you won’t regret it! The FFA equals opportunity – opportunity for friendship, opportunity for leadership, and opportunity to serve others. Because of the FFA, I established my own show pig operation and have traveled across the country to participate in various leadership conferences and FFA events, such as the Washington Leadership Conference, FFA National Convention and OYLA, making lifelong friendships along the way. It changed me from a shy eighth grader to an outgoing person who isn’t afraid to dance in front of 400 people at Alumni Camp and look a little silly. I am a stronger, more confident person today as a direct result of my participation in the FFA organization.”

St. Mary’s To Begin Using ImPACT Testing Program

taken prior to the concussion to compare to activity after the concussion occurs. According to Dr. Lawrence, being able to match the post-concussion results to the results from the test that happened previously. This will help him and other physicians determine whether the athlete is ready and healthy enough to get back on the field.

Dr. Michael Lawrence In the ongoing battle to educate athletes, coaches and parents on concussion awareness and safety, the team at St. Mary’s Physician Associates will be utilizing the ImPACT Testing Program this year. The program is computer based and will help doctors get an even more accurate picture of when the athlete should return to their sport of choice following a concussion.

The testing will be starting immediately and the doctors at St. Mary’s Physician Associates including Dr. Michael Lawrence will be working with as many teams and athletes as possible in the northwest region of the state.

“Concussions are very common. There are an estimated 4.5 million concussions in sports per year and those numbers just seem to be going up as athletes get bigger, faster and stronger,” Lawrence said. “Signs can be very minor like being dazed briefly or seeing spots and some athletes may not even know they have a concussion. The signs can even be emotional like being confused, taking longer to process information or having outbursts of anger, which are even harder to spot.”

It is because of that difficulty that Dr. Lawrence urges players and coaches to get an athlete examined by a professional if they think there is even a chance of a concussion. The ImPACT testing will also help clear up the waters for doctors who can use an early test that was

“As a doctor and a father I to want to see these athletes be able to compete again as soon as possible. Since the healing process for a concussion is completely based on the individual, this testing will help us not only make sure athletes are healthy when they return to the field of play but also could potentially speed that process up in some cases, as some concussions will resolve sooner than others,” Lawrence said. Dr. Lawrence added that St. Mary’s Physician Associates will be contacting area coaches and school leadership to schedule the baseline testing for the program.

Pioneer-Pleasant Vale Mustangs

COACH: AUGUST OVERSTREET ENROLLMENT: 141 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 4-6 2010 - 4-6 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 2-8 2013 - 1-9 OFFENSE The Mustangs are looking to wear opponents out with a pounding running game and a clock-controlling offense. Running back Chase Courter (Sr.) is one of five returning starters for head coach Overstreet. Courter runs hard and is tough to bring down. Quarterback Stephan Rich (Jr.) adds another element to the running game with his speed, but has the ability to hurt aggressive defenses with his arm. Chris Faw Faw is only a sophomore, but can give the Mustangs a spark on offense. Bucko Gray (Jr.) can play multiple positions including running back and tight end. On the line look for junior Cody Smith to anchor a young unit. DEFENSE Defensively the Mustangs are young, but make up for it with athleticism. Defensive end Austin Booth (Jr.) is quick off the edge and will pressure the quarterback. Linebackers Cole Hammock (Jr.) and Jerry Don Valter (So.) play downhill and swarm to the football. Gray will start at corner with Courter playing one of the safety positions. “It is going to be a really exciting season. Our offense is a ground and pound

team, while the defense is young but very fast,” said coach Overstreet. Big games with Laverne, Pond Creek-Hunter and Seiling will help determine where the Mustangs will finish in 2014. *No Schedule Provided. Please send schedule to Oklahoma@ VYPE.com and check back at VYPEOK.com

Waukomis Chiefs

COACH: JON CLABORN ENROLLMENT: 88 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 2-8 2010 - 4-6 2011 - 3-6 2012 - 1-9 2013 - 3-7

OFFENSE Gage McCartney and Justus Crites had no problem scoring points for Waukomis in 2013. The Chiefs averaged 36.2 points per contest, and McCartney and Crites are back in 2014 to lead the charge again. McCartney (6-0, 175, Sr.) will be back at running back, where he logged 942 yards and nine touchdowns on 145 carries last season. McCartney (6-0, 190, Jr.) will engineer the offense at quarterback after posting a 1,000-1,000 year as a junior. McCartney rushed for 1,340 yards and 19 touchdowns on 117 carries, and he passed for 1,016 yards and 15 touchdowns. Jared Lawson (6-3, 280, Jr.) and Quin Newman (6-2, 205, Jr.) will bolster the offensive line, and Aarron Harrington (5-9, 170, Jr.) will be Crites top target at tight end.

Justus Crites DEFENSE Stopping opposing offenses is where Waukomis struggled in 2013, allowing 50.9 points per contest. Ryan Coontz (511, 190, Sr.) will anchor the defense at linebacker, where he collected 96 tackles last season. Stetson Edwards (6-2, 230, Sr.) will return as a threeyear starter on the defensive front. Zach Prince (5-9, 160, Jr.) and Riley Williams (5-8, 160, So.) will also be key cogs on defense. OFFENSE Last season the Broncs finished 5-6 after losing to eventual state champion Cherokee in the first round of the Class C playoffs. This season the Broncs will move up to Class B but will have 10 returning offensive starters to lean on making the transition a bit easier. At quarterback Andre Lizar (5-11, 180, Sr.) will guide the Broncs Veer offense. Kass Bittle (5-10, 175, Jr.) will also play a major part in the Broncs’ run game starting at fullback. Kremlin will also have a talented group of players up front made up of tight end Elijah Voth (5-10, 170, Jr.) and linemen Austin DaSilva (5-10, 210, So.) and Jacob Pekrul (6-0, 200, Sr.) opening up holes for Lizar and Bittle. DEFENSE On defense the Broncs will base out of a 3-2-2 scheme and let their linebackers attack the line of scrimmage. Lizar and Bittle will be the two linebackers in that system and fans can expect the two talented athletes to make their presence felt on the field. On the defensive line Blake Bower (6-1, 175, Sr.) will start at defensive end while DaSilva will start at nose guard. In the secondary, John Schrader (6-2, 165, Sr.) will give the Broncs great size in the back end of the defense. Overall head coach Jeremy Brashears said that he is looking forward to what the upcoming season holds for his team. “I am excited about the

COACH: MARK HARMON ENR: 108 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 14-0 2010 - 5-5 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 9-3 2013 - 6-4

OFFENSE Moving out of the murder’s row that is District B-1, the Wolverines get a shot in the arm this year moving over to District B-3, a district expected to be slightly less bloody. Overall Garber brings back six starters on offense from a year ago but will be without star quarterback Dallas Hunt who is forgoing football this season to concentrate on basketball. Trenton Harmon (5-9, 180, Sr.) will slide in under center this year after starting at running back last year and rushing for 800 yards and 10 touchdowns. Alec Monsees (6-0, 175, Sr.) will be another key skill player this year as Garber utilizes his blazing speed either as a running back or split out wide at receiver. Last season Monsees rushed for 680 yards and nine touchdowns and also caught four passes for 80 yards. Another key receiver for the Wolverines this year will be Caylen Enfield (6-1, 170, Jr.). On the line look for the

Wolverines to primarily work behind two-year starters Cade Silvers (6-0, 185, Sr.) and Kutter Goodspeed (5-9, 190, Jr.). Tight end Tyler Hatch (510, 190, Sr.) will also be a key blocker this season but will also be a valuable weapon in the passing attack.

DEFENSE Many of the same players that will grab the headlines on offense this year will also do the same on defense. Harmon and Silvers will anchor the middle of the Garber defense as the Wolverine’s starting linebackers. In 2013 Harmon made 116 total tackles, five sacks, picked off one pass and recovered a fumble. Silvers meanwhile made 93 stops, four sacks and picked off one pass. Hatch will also be a part of the Garber front five starting at defensive end where he made 64 tackles and four sacks last season. In the Garber secondary Monsees, will start at cornerback as will Christian Gomez (5-8, 160, So.). Ryan Malaska (6-0, 165, So.) meanwhile will start at safety. In 2013 Monsees made 102 tackles, six sacks and intercepted a pass for a touchdown. Malaska meanwhile added four interceptions and Gomez chipped in 52 tackles. *No Schedule Provided. AUGUST 2014

Last 5 Years: 2009 - 7-5 2010 - 11-2 2011 - 9-3 2012 - 5-5 2013- 2-8

OFFENSE The Wildcats fell on some hard times last year with a young roster and managed to go just 2-8 on the year in a very competitive district. With six starters back this year the Wildcats move down to Class C and expect to be much improved. “We are still a young team, but we drop to Class C this year and we expect to compete for a trip to the playoffs,” head coach Brian Smith said. Running back Connor Nunley (5-11, 160, So.) will be the team’s biggest offensive weapon after rushing for 853 yards and gaining another 454 receiving. Quarterback Hunter Carl (5-10, 160, Jr.) will also give the Wildcats a big lift after completing 102 of 177 passes last year for 1,113 yards and 12 touchdowns. One of Carl’s biggest targets this year will be tight end Dylon Daugherty (5-11, 185, Sr.). Last year Daugherty had 498 receiving yards and picked up another 111 as a ball carrier. Fellow tight ends Easton Maxwell (6-4, 240, Jr.) and Phillip Nunley (6-2, 225, Jr.) will also be important targets in the passing game and also key blockers in the run game this year. Along with his duties at tight end the older Nunley will also spend some time at the fullback spot for the Wildcats.

In the Wildcats 3-3 stack base defense, play on the defensive line will be a huge factor and leading that charge in the trenches will be nose guard Ryan Fink (5-11, 280, Sr.) and defensive end Phillip Nunley, although Nunley may also spend some of his time at outside linebacker as well. Last season Nunley recorded 22 tackles while Fink spent last year watching from the sidelines after suffering a season-ending injury. Behind the two big linemen will be Daughtery, who led the team in tackles last year with 94 total tackles and three interceptions. Connor Nunley, who had 61 total tackles and one interception last year, will also spend some time at linebacker this year along with playing some in the defensive secondary. Carl meanwhile will be the team’s main playmaker in the defensive backfield where he picked up 51 total tackles and one interception last year. Kingfisher Yellowjackets Coach: JEFF MYERS Enrollment: 386

Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Woodward Sept. 12 – at Hennessey Sept. 19 – vs. Bethany Sept. 26 – vs. Mannford Oct. 3 – at Cushing Oct. 10 – at Seminole Oct. 16 – at Blackwell Oct. 24 – vs. Perkins-Tryon Oct. 31 – at Heritage Hall Nov. 7 – vs. OKC Centennial Last 5 Years: 2013 - 15-0 2012 - 14-1 2011- 9-2 2010 – 10-4 2009 – 12-3

OFFENSE After completing the school’s first ever undefeated season and winning the Class 3A state championship, what does Kingfisher do for an encore in 2014? “1-UP and keep the fire burning,” said head coach Jeff Myers, whose teams have reached the state championship game five of the past 10 seasons. “There’s a lot of tradition that brings good pressure and our kids accept that.” Gone is Landon Nault who scored 45 times a year ago but the cupboard is still stocked with talent including a trio of VYPE Top 100 selections Kaden Jackson, Jace Sternberger and Nick Smith. Already with seven Division I offers, Jackson (6-3, 270, Sr.), is a three year starter for the Yellowjackets whose strength is equaled by his

passion for the game. “He’s an emotional leader for us,” said Myers. “Kaden’s motor runs all out on both sides of the ball.” Dillon Smith (6-3, 225, Sr.) returns to the fray in the front line along with Landon Forman (6-4, 230, Jr.), Craig Conover (6-2, 250, Sr.) and Gabe Rednose (6-2, 225, Jr.). Sternberger (6-5, 225, Sr.) returns to tight end where he snared nine catches for 191 yards and four touchdowns while controlling opposing defenders blocking for the run. “Jace is on our 4x200 and 4x400 relays so he can run,” said Myers. “And he creates separation and uses his size to catch the ball.” After a standout effort in the 3A finals last year, Smith (5-10, 185, Jr.) takes the top spot running the football after gaining 1,019 yards and 17 scores a year ago. “He started on defense as a sophomore and proved his abilities to run the ball during our run to the championship last year,” Myers said. “He can pound inside or bounce to the edge and score.” The field general in the ‘Jackets offense is quarterback Docker Haub (5-11, 175, Sr.), who completed 63% of his passes and played near flawless football in 2013. “Doc plays smart,” confirmed Myers. “His decision making is solid whether throwing or running the football. He just doesn’t make mistakes.” When Kingfisher throws the football, Haub will look to Bradyn Shepherd (5-11, 170, Sr.) as well as twin brothers Brady (5-11, 175) and Brett Smith (5-11, 175, Sr.) along with Sternberger. “We can stretch the field with all of them,” notes Myers. “Not only do they have good hands and quickness, they’re all capable of getting yards after contact.”

DEFENSE Kingfisher’s defense created 51 turnovers during the undefeated season resulting in a plus-37

ratio while limiting 15 opponents to just 121 points on the year. With seven returning starters, can the ‘Jackets “1-UP” in 2014? Jace Sternberger Jackson totaled 53 tackles including 14 for loss while Sternberger’s 39 stops including 23 tackles for loss. The dynamic duo, who combined for 13 sacks in 2013, will be joined by Dillon Smith, Foreman and Tracy Smalley (6-2, 195, So.). Trey Yoeman (5-11, 195, Sr.) who totaled 44 tackles in 2013 will join David Bastida (5-7, 195, Sr.) and Brady Ballard (6-1, 185, So.) at linebacker along with Nick Smith, whose play at the “hybrid” linebacker included 58 tackles and 6 interceptions. The secondary remains sound with Wendell Prim (5-11, 175, Sr.), who collected 7 interceptions and 45 tackles last year joining Shepherd and Conner Vincent (5-9, 175, Sr.) at cornerback while the Smith twins, who combined for 113 stops in 2013, will again be on patrol at safety. “Our defense still has playmakers,” said Myers. “They swarm to the football from every position and are pretty good making tackles in space.” With the cast of players returning from a 15-0 title effort in 2013, can the ‘Jackets repeat in 2014? “Our goals are the same,” said Myers. “Win the district and make the playoff and play for another gold ball at the end. If we can stay healthy and keep the hunger, our kids believe they’re going to be in the mix for another title run.”

Deer Creek-Lamont Eagles COACH: KEVIN ENGLE ENROLLMENT: 47 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 10-3 2010 - 13-0 2011 - 11-1 2012 - 8-4 2013 - 3-7

OFFENSE The flight of the Eagles looks to return to the recent glory years including an undefeated 14-0 record and Class C state title. Kevin Engle enters the nest after spending the past 2 years at Mounds with offensive scheme designed to put points on the scoreboard. Harrison Muegge (5-10, 165, Jr.) will be the team leader at quarterback bringing a dual threat running or passing. Dillon Dobson (5-10, 175, Sr.) provides a power runner while Justin Hodges (5-10, 170, Sr.) adds speed to the ground game. Britton Stacy (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Bryson Holman (5-11, 190, Sr.) offer pass catching skills as well as punishing blocks at tight end while Barry Blackman (5-9, 155, Jr.) stretches the field at wide receiver. Cody Williams (5-11, 220, Sr.) will control play line of scrimmage. “Diversity will be our advantage,” notes Engle. “Whether its double tight or 2-back spread, we plan to keep defenses guessing.” DEFENSE The Eagles attacking style defense will include various blitz packages to pressure opposing offenses. Stacy will captain the defense at free safety along with Bachman in the secondary while Dobson and Holman play downhill with aggression at linebacker. Hodges and Williams will provide a physical character to the front line. “Defense will be a focal point,” said Engle. “Our fly to the football on every snap and make contact is critical to controlling the tempo of the game.” 30

OFFENSE The Cardinals fly into the nest for 2014 after making the move to Class C football. Andy Claborn begins his first season as head coach and 38th season on the sidelines. Medford welcomes the return of Robby Webb (5-7, 155, Sr.) at running back. Whether running off tackle or on a pitch sweep, Webb totaled 912 yards rushing averaging 6.7 yards per carry while also leading the pass receiving statistics. Cayde Neumann (6-0, 200, Jr.) returns to the backfield following last year’s 5.5 yards average per carry along with Ben Schuster (5-10, Sr.). Described as a pocket-style passer, Alex Koehn (6-4, 170, Jr.) returns at quarterback in coach Claborn’s offset veer offense. McKenzie Smith (6-1, 290, Jr.) along with Joe Jantzen (6-3, 175, So.) are ticketed for offensive line play. DEFENSE Coach Claborn will use a 3-2 defensive scheme to get balance all over the field. While playing safety last season, Webb totaled 76 tackles while Neumann recorded 40 stops at linebacker. Schuster’s 31 tackles will be needed again as a defensive back while Smith and Jantzen anchor

Pond-Creek-Hunter Panthers COACH: David Kerr ENROLLMENT: 92 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 6-5 2010 - 8-3 2011 - 8-3 2012 - 12-2 2013 - 12-2

OFFENSE After a great run in 2013 that ended in a loss to Laverne in the Class B championship game, the Panthers will have their work cut out for them in 2014 as they have to replace many of the their skill players on offense. On the plus side, they do return a solid core of the offensive line headed by T.J. Krittenbrink (6-3, 230, Sr.) at a guard spot and Michael Czapanski (6-0, 330, Sr.) at center. They also sport an experienced two-some in the receiving corps in tight ends Devan McKee (5-10. 170, Jr.) ,who had 20 receptions for nearly 300 yards last season, and Jevan Overton (6-2, 170, Sr.) who hauled in six passes for nearly

100 yards. But the brightest offensive returner might be tailback Harley Comeau (5-11, 155, Sr.). He brings a dual threat to the Panther backfield, having rushed for just over 900 yards and snagged 12 passes for 167 yards and pair of touchdowns in 2013.

DEFENSE “With only three returning starters we will be really inexperienced on defense,” said coach David Kerr. Krittenbrink (70 tackles and an interception) and McKee (64 tackles and eight interceptions) will be two of those starters back at linebacker and defensive back respectively. They’re joined by defensive ends Garrett Shaffer (5-11, 220, Sr.), who compiled 62 tackles last year in a starting role, and Parker Coats (5-11, 200, Sr.) who had 46 tackles in a supporting role. As is usually the case with heavy graduation losses, Kerr notes that the Panthers success will depend on how quickly his youngsters can step up and perform. Okeene Whippets COACH: Jeff Wardlaw ENROLLMENT: 78 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 8-3 2010 - 10-2 2011 - 6-5 2012 - 6-5 2013 - 10-2

OFFENSE After going 10-2 and advancing to the second round of the Class A playoffs last season the Whippets have a good foundation to build on with seven returning starters to the offensive side of the ball. At running back the Whippets will feature the duo of Chance Bedwell (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Cade Mitch (5-10, 160, Jr.). Last season Mitch, who will also spend some time at flanker this year rushed for 686 yards while Bedwell missed the season with a torn ACL. Quarterback Beau Jenkins (6-1, 170, Jr.) spent last season as a backup to Scott Dobrinski but will now step into the starting role due to Dobrinski graduating in May. The Whippets will also have a strong offensive line led by center Austin Jordan (5-9, 205, Sr.) and tackle Danyon Rackley (5-10, 225, Sr.) both of whom are two-year starters on the Okeene offensive line. DEFENSE “We felt we made great strides on defense in 2013 and we hope to continue to improve on defense this year. The key to our success defensively will be how consistent we are,” Okeene head coach Jeff Wardlaw said. Helping to continue those improvements will be inside linebacker Mitchell Howe (6-0, 190, Sr.) who had 98 tackles last season as a junior. Howe has also been the Whippets leading tackler for two-straight seasons and has a good chance to make it three seasons in a row this fall. Rackley will also start on the Okeene defensive front starting at defensive tackle where he made 35 tackles in 2013. The strongest portion of the Okeene defense however may be the secondary. Bedwell and Jenkins will both start at safety for the Whippets and play alongside Braxton Smith (6-3, 150, Sr.) who registered 54 32

OFFENSE The Eagles managed to get back to the Class A playoffs last season but were eliminated in the first round by state runnerup Ringling. Trying to improve on that result this year the Eagles will have six returning starters on offense to lean on. Many of those key returners will be in the receiving corps this year. Slot receivers Mario Reyes (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Darren Williams (5-9, 165, Sr.) will both play big roles in Watonga’s spread offense. Last year Reyes made 35 catches for 700 yards and seven touchdowns and Williams added 16 catches of his own for 294 yards and three touchdowns. With Williams and Reyes in the slot Brandon Parker (6-0, 175, Sr.) will work the sidelines as the Eagle’s top receiver on the outside. Parker made 16 catches in 2013 for 176 yards and three touchdowns and will be expected to have an even bigger impact this year. On the offensive line Caleb Smith (6-3, 270, Sr.) will start at tackle while Jorge De La Cruz (5-10, 220, Sr.) starts at guard. DEFENSE Six returning starters on defense give fans in Watonga a good reason to be excited about this fall. On the defensive line Smith will start at defensive tackle where he made 58 tackles and three sacks last season. Tim O’Dell (6-4, 215, Sr.) made 35

tackles last season and also will start on the defensive line putting his unique mix of speed and strength to have an impact at defensive end. Jose Duenas (59, 180, Sr.) will also be a crucial piece of the Watonga front seven starting at linebacker. After making 42 total stops last season Duenas will be asked to do even more this year. Watonga will also have a solid pair of back end defenders this year with Reyes starting at free safety and Parker starting at corner. Reyes made 59 tackles last year to go along with one interception while Parker added 32 more tackles. OFFENSE The Wildcats return nine starters on offense from a team that won 10 games in 2013. Quarterback Matt Harman (6-1, 185, So.) is back after throwing for 2,754 yards and 27 touchdowns. Those numbers were good enough to get him on the VYPE Top 100 list. Harman has the benefit of

four returning starters on the offensive line including Devron Tiller (6-3, 270, Sr.) and Brett Wilson (6-3, 230, Sr.). Their job is to protect Harman and open holes in the running game for Dillon Kordeliski (5-11, 180, Sr.). As a junior Kordelski rushed for 1,444 yards and 27 touchdowns. Wide receiver Peyton Maroney (5-9, 160, Sr.) caught 79 passes for 779 yards and three touchdowns. “If we can stay healthy we should be able to compete for a district championship and have an opportunity to advance in the playoffs,” said Shackelford.

DEFENSE The defensive unit should be one of the best in the district. With 10 returning starters the Wildcats have senior leadership and several difference makers running the show. Kyle Robinson (5-10, 215, Sr.) is a hard-hitting linebacker that plays downhill and swarms to the ball. Two defensive ends in Kaleb George (5-10, 200, Sr.) and Quinton Thorpe (6-3, 215, Sr.) will contain the outside running game and force all of the action to the middle where Robinson can gobble up the running backs. Blakely Liebman (6-0, 180, Jr.) will start at strong safety with Ryan Harrell (5-10, 165, Jr.) at corner. The Wildcats will run a 4-3 scheme and look to their linebackers to fill gaps and make plays. OFFENSE In the past two seasons the Tigers have amassed an

impressive 17-6 combined overall record but unfortunately for the Tigers many of the players who contributed to that run have now graduated. The cupboard isn’t completely bare in Crescent however giving head coach J.L. Fisher a reason to be optimistic. “We will be very young but our younger players have a lot of skill to compete,” Fisher said. Quarterback Damion Bledsoe (60, 160, Sr.) threw for 2,021 yards and 21 touchdowns last season and is back looking to improve his numbers this year. One major number Bledsoe will be trying to improve on is his interception total of 16. Bledsoe’s ability to cut down on that number will greatly affect the Tigers ability to be successful with such a young team. On the outside Bledsoe will target Keanu O’Connor (6-1, 175, Sr.) and Nash Walker (5-7, 150, So.) who will take the place of last year’s top receivers Tristan Lacey and Devon Bledsoe. The Tigers will also have some good size up front with an offensive line led by Chance Marrs (6-0, 220, Sr.). Hennessey Eagles

2012 - 11-1 2013 - 10-2

OFFENSE With nine returning starters back for head coach Bob Ward, a good run/pass balance is the focus with the talent and experience coming back to the field for the Terriers. Trent Dunaway (6-3, 220, Sr.) is a skilled passer with the ability to tuck and run when the play calls for it. Dunaway is an all-around talent that has plenty of players around him that make plays including Chezden Nease (6-2, 160, Sr.) at wide receiver. Nease has the ability to adapt to the defense and make adjustments that allow him to be in a position to be successful. Blake Wohl (5-10, 150, Sr.) accounted for over 200 yards of offense and four touchdowns last year as a receiver. Noah Gregory (6-3, 230, Sr.) will start at center with guard Preston Manley (5-11, 245, Sr.) returning as a threeyear starter for the Terriers.

interception. Hunter Herrera (5-10, 150, Sr.) will start with Reyes at linebacker. Dunaway joins the linebacker corps and had 45 tackles last season. In the secondary Nease and Wohl combined for nine interceptions with Nease adding 63 tackles, “We are looking forward to the season. We hope to improve each week. Our district is competitive and we must be ready to play,” said Ward. OFFENSE The Eagles claimed the first two Class 2A championships of this decade winning the gold ball in 2010 and 2011. Since those back-to-back championships the Eagles have gone a combined 21-5 the last two seasons but have failed to get all the way back to the top of the 2A mountain. This season the Eagles will be returning seven offensive starters headlined by VYPE Top 100 selection Tabor Johns (5-11, 185, Jr.). Johns will be the teams starting running back this season and main ball carrier after rushing for 1,394 yards and 17 touchdowns last year on 222 carries. Other key players in the Hennessey offense this year will be quarterback Tony Mendoza (5-10, 165, Sr.), receiver Jose Sanchez (5-11, 170, Sr.) and tight end/ fullback Abe Ortega (6-0, 215, Sr.). With so many key skill players the Eagles will rely heavily on left guard Javy Renteria (6-1, 225, Sr.) to clear a path for Johns and help keep Mendoza upright. “We are always a run-heavy team with the ability to throw the football. We are going to look to control the clock, move the chains and put points on the board,” Hennessey head coach Rick Luetjen said.

DEFENSE “We are definitely looking to get our identity back on defense and play with a more physical and aggressive style that won us two state championships,” Luetjen said. We feel like we have the personnel back this year to get that accomplished.” With seven starters back on defense that aggressive style will come from all sides this season. Mason Weber (5-10, 210, Jr.) will be the man in the trenches starting at the nose guard position. At linebacker the team will count on Ortega and Renteria to cover a lot of ground in the team’s 4-3 defense. Meanwhile in the secondary Sanchez will be a main cog at cornerback while hardhitting safety Eli Montes (5-11, 155, Sr.) will look to punish receivers coming over the middle. “Our kids are hungry to get back to the state championship game this year. Our seniors were freshmen when we won the last one and they’ve had a great offseason preparing for another run,” Luetjen said.

Shattuck Indians COACH: TYSON BULLARD ENROLLMENT: 78 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 11-1 2010 - 11-2 2011 - 12-1 2012 - 3-6 2013 - 10-2

OFFENSE The Indians only have three starters coming back on the offensive side of the ball, but they do have a lot of players coming back that saw a lot of playing time last year. The key to their season will be how fast do those players perform as they step into the starting role. They will be leaning heavily on the run game and will look for senior guard Chris Baxter (5-10, 215) to pave the way for the backs. Baxter will be joined on the line by fellow senior, Trenton Callaway (6-4, 300) at center. At running back, Braxton Bruce (6-0, 185, Jr.) will be looked upon to carry the load. Vying for the quarterback position will be Jake Bay (5-10, 165, So.) and Skylar Pshigoda (5-8, 150, So.). Regardless of what position they are playing, look for coach Bullard to find a way to get both of them on the field. DEFENSE Defensively, Baxter will be looked upon to anchor the line and create havoc from this defensive end

position. On the other side, Preston Deal (6-2, 190, So.) will be counted on to keep the opposition at bay. In the 3-2 defense, the linebacking crew will be Braxton Bruce and Dillon Meier (5-9, 170, Sr.). Jake Bay will be patrolling the secondary for the Indians. Coach Bullard said, “we have several players who saw a lot of action last year who weren’t starters but have a great chance to step in and do a good job for us.” Look for Shattuck to contend for a district title this year if the team matures as the season goes on. OFFENSE Putting up 28.2 points per game wasn’t enough for the Bison to make the

playoffs in 2013. Buffalo averaged 51 points per contest in its four victories, but four of the Bison’s six losses saw them fail to eclipse the eight-point mark. Now the offensive workload will be handed over to Barrett Cosby (6-1, 230, Jr.) at quarterback. Cosby played wide receiver for Buffalo last season. At running back for Bison will be 6-foot-1, 155-pound junior Cristian Sarabia, who rushed for more than 850 yards and had more than 700 yards receiving. Coleton Russell (6-1, 230, Sr.) and Austin Stewart (6-1, 230, So.) will anchor the offensive line. “The contributions we get from (Russell, Sarabia, Cosby, Stewart), and the growth of our freshmen, will determine the amount of success we have,” head coach Dusty Yauk said. DEFENSE Russell, Sarabia, and Stewart will also take part on the defensive side of the ball. Russell and Stewart will play on the defensive line, and Sarabia will be at safety. “We lost five starters on each side of the ball,” Yauk said. “A number for freshmen and sophomores will be asked to fill the void left by a big senior class.” Sept. 5 – vs. Waukomis Sept. 12 – vs. Cherokee Sept. 19 – at Waynoka Sept. 26 – vs. Balko Oct. 3 – at Sharon-Mutual Oct. 10 – vs. Boise City Oct. 16 – at Tyrone Oct. 24 – at Shattuck Oct. 31 – at Deer CreekLamont Nov. 6 – vs. Laverne JV

The Trojans racked up 447 points in 13 games, a salty average of 34.4 points per contest. Those offensive numbers were put up in large part by Cooper Free, SharonMutual’s quarterback who graduated after the 2013 campaign. Stepping in to fill the void at quarterback this season will Ben Cooper (6-0, 170, Jr.), who ran for 136 yards and touchdowns last season. Konner Harris (5-10, 220, Jr.) and Justin Custar (5-10, 180, So.) will also enhance the Trojans’ running game. Providing the blocking up front will be Gage White (5-11, 250, Sr.). DEFENSE Cooper returns after being the Trojans’ top tackler in 2013. He amassed 95 takedowns as a sophomore, and he’ll play defensive back this year. the season with an overall 6-4 record. That disappointing finish left a bitter taste in the mouths of the Bearcats players and coaches but it also left Mooreland hungry to get the 2014 season underway. “We are really excited about this season. The players worked really hard this offseason to get ready. We feel like if we keep working hard we should have a chance for a playoff spot,” head coach Frank Howard said. Manning the wheel of the Mooreland offense this year will be quarterback Kyler Hensley (6-0, 155,

Jr.) who threw for 1,652 yards and 11 touchdowns last season along with rushing for 395 yards and nine touchdowns. Two top targets for Hensley to throw to will be Blake Murray (5-11, 150, Jr.) and Jacob Schnoebelen (6-1, 165, Jr.) who combined for 535 yards receiving last year. After running for 547 yards and seven touchdowns last season running back Hunter Miller (6-0, 160, Jr.). Mooreland will also have some beef on the line led by Jacob Heath (6-1, 210, Jr.). and will start at linebacker this year alongside Dason Gillewaters (6-0, 210, Sr.) who made 55 stops last year. Quick Hits: The Boomers have experienced post season success as of late. Woodward won playoff games both in 2013 and 2011. Their previous last two road wins came in 1996 and the state championship year of 1994.

Woodward suffered a near miss against Clinton in 2013, dropping a heart-breaker 19-14. The Boomers have lost ten in a row in the series to the Red Tornadoes with their last victory coming in 1995 by a 3-0 margin.

The Boomers travel east of I-35 for a regular season game for the first time since 2004 when they played at Harrah. The bus didn’t seem to bother Woodward last year in a 49-7 playoff win at Ada.

however with Fraire rushing for 30 yards and two touchdowns on just six carries while Reddin carried the ball just once for 19 yards. Reddin did however put up big numbers on defense last year making 70 tackles from his spot at linebacker. Kade Marlatt (5-10, 160, Jr.) and Lane Reazin (6-3, 210, Sr.) will both compete for the starting quarterback job this year after both players saw time at receiver in 2013. Marlatt was a major target in the passing game last year making 32 catches for 449 yards and nine touchdowns while Reazin added four catches for 79 yards.

OFFENSE A team known for never backing down from anybody, the Boomers return just five starters to an offense that averaged 37.9 points a game last season. “We are very talented but unproven and untested,” head coach Darris Servis said. “There are a lot of unknowns. We have loads of potential with new young players though, we have to be ready to start fast with us playing a tough schedule.” At running back the Boomers will turn to Caleb Reddin (6-0, 185, Jr.) and Jesus “Chewy” Fraire (58, 150, So.) to get the majority of the carries this season. to the trenches.

Lane Reazin The Woodward offensive line will get a big boost from Devon Comstock (6-2, 210, Sr.) this year as he brings size, strength and a good amount of senior leadership

DEFENSE The Woodward defense will need to be the side of the ball the Boomers lean on especially early this year as their offense finds their stride. Comstock, Garrett Hines (511, 205, Sr.) and Cody Coats (6-2, 250, Sr.) will be a dominant force on the front line. Starting at end Comstock made 92 tackles, 10 tackles for loss and seven sacks last year. Hines will also start at end this year after making 24 tackles a year ago. Coats meanwhile will occupy one of the defensive tackle spots after

a 2013 season that saw him make 57 tackles and one sack. Coltin Kline (5-9, 182, Sr.) will be another cornerstone of the Woodward defense after tearing his ACL in just the second game last year. Kline did start as a sophomore however and has a good amount of history to bring to the table. Reazin, who Servis describes as a “big hitter” will be the team’s leader in the secondary this season after making 89 tackles, recovering two fumbles and blocking one punt last year. Reazin is also one of the top punters in Class 4A and will play a big part in the field position battle this season.

OFFENSE The Tigers return four starters from last year’s team that went 14-0 and won a state title. Head coach Tim Allen is looking for another balanced run/pass attack. At the helm of that attack is quarterback Tanner Allen (6-1, 175, Jr.). Allen will lead a talented group of players this season including fullback Dalton Birch (6-1, 200, Jr.) and running back Dalton Sparks (5-11, 180, Fr.). Birch is a big back that has no fear of running through a defense on his way to the endzone. Opening the holes for Birch are Sean Davis (5-11, 270, Jr.) at guard and Joe Baker (6-0, 210, Jr.) at center. The pair can move the line of scrimmage and play

DEFENSE A fundamentally sound and physical defense is how the coach Allen describes his 3-2 defense. Birch and Baker are bookend defensive ends that work to force everything inside. There waiting to make the play is linebacker Trenton McConnell (6-0, 190, So.). McConnell has a front row seat for the show Davis will put on at nose tackle. Allen will play both sides of ball for the Tigers as he steps onto the defensive side at safety. The district is stacked with quality teams like Seiling, Pond Creek-Hunter, and Merritt. COACH: BRUCE Hendrickson ENROLLMENT: 122 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 12-2 2010 - 5-6 2011 - 9-3 2012 - 4-6 2013 - 5-5 OFFENSE After not starting one senior in the last five games of the season, Seiling returns a veteran squad. The Wildcats will have Ehric Young (6-1, 180, Sr.) at quarterback this season. Last season Young threw for 1,775 yards and 13 touchdowns. The Wildcats have a very balanced attack behind Young who also ran for 975 yards and 12 touchdowns.

The Wildcats return the entire offensive line from last season. The experienced line will open holes for a stable of running backs Brent Harris (5-9, 140, Sr.), Trevor Thurber (6-1, 160, Sr.) who will be the main tailback in the 2014 season for Seiling.

DEFENSE After struggling at times last season the Wildcats are much improved defensively. Wildcats will run at 4-2 defensive scheme. Colby Thurber (6-2, 170, Sr.) will lead Seiling this year on defense at middle linebacker. The leadership Thurber provides on defense will be key to the Wildcats success. A huge strength for Seiling in 2014 is the great depth they have. District B-1 will provide the Wildcats with some tough tests over the season. *No Schedule Provided. Shelbi Smithton Woodward High School How long have you been involved with FCA? After a long period of inactivity, Woodward High School restarted an FCA program last year and I have been involved since then. Who influenced you to join? My basketball coach and our FCA sponsor, Kinzie Didier. (Coach D) How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? I have always been involved in church and youth groups throughout my life. FCA has provided me another outlet to share my beliefs with my teammates which has helped us grow closer and stronger.

How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? As with life in general, there is adversity in athletics. Sharing a common belief in God with my teammates helps us to fight through the adversity of competition. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? Deuteronomy 31:6 - “Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for The Lord your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.” I love this verse because it reminds me that fearing anything is pointless with God. He will always protect me.

After two seasons as the head coach at Oklahoma Christian Jessica Burkhart is a big threat at the plate and Devre Academy in Edmond, coach Shackleford decided the move Newby simply makes plays in the field or at the plate. to Woodward was something she couldn’t pass up. “I was Preseason games will help coach Shackleford determine really impressed with the Athletic Director (Andy Newby) what the weaknesses are and address those before the and his desire for the teams at Woodward to succeed. season begins, but she’s confident they have the players to The support for the coaches here is amazing and the be competitive this year. “If we do what we are capable of administration gives us what we need to be successful,” everything will take care of itself. Community support here said Shackleford. is great, we just need to go out and play up to our potential. If we do that we will be fine.” Shackleford continued, The transition has been an easy one thanks to the “You have to build up their confidence. When they do player’s willingness to take direction and believe in something right you give them praise and let them know what coach Shackleford is bringing to the team. “I’ve about it. What we need to work on is our mental focus and been very impressed with the talent and their intensity believing that we can win the big game. If our girls begin in practice. They work hard and want to improve. They to believe they can win and win consistently, there is no have responded well and there’s been a lot of acceptance telling how far they can go.” from the players. As a new coach you can sometimes experience some bitterness, but that has not been the case,” Shackleford said.

One thing is clear, coach Shackleford brings a positive energy to the team and the players are responding. R E D K E N • M AT R I X • B I G S E X Y H A I R • B I O L A G E • S H O RT S E X Y H A I R

Alva Goldbugs Coach: BRUCE DOLLAR Last 5 Years: 2013 - 7-4 2012 – 8-4 2011- 4-7 2010 – 1-9 Photo by Michael Mayberry 2009 – 8-5 Enrollment: 253

Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Thomas Sept. 12 – at OBA Sept. 19 – vs. Hobart Sept. 26 – at Hennessey Oct. 3 – vs. Newkirk Oct. 10 – at Chisholm Oct. 16 – at OCS Oct. 24 – at Tonkawa Oct. 31 – vs. Pawnee Nov. 7 - vs. Perry

OFFENSE New faces in new places could be the slogan for the Goldbugs this season. Gone are long time starters Riley Hess, Ty Hooper, and Cade Pfleider, all of whom graduated in May after illustrious high school

careers. In fact the Goldbugs return just three starters to the offensive side of the ball. Leading the team this year on offense will be quarterback Travis Costello (6-2, 175, Jr.) and receiver Dalton Manning (6-1, 165, Sr.). Offensive linemen Bryant Vanosdel (5-9, 170, Sr.) and Aaron Pierce (511, 230, Sr.) will also be key figures on an Alva offense that will be more run-heavy than past years according to head coach Bruce Dollar. DEFENSE On defense Alva will be the strongest in the middle and on the back end of their 5-2 base front. In the secondary both Costello and Manning will start at safety giving the Goldbugs a pair of playmakers to rely on when it comes to both stopping the run and disrupting the pass game. At linebacker Chase Jones (6-0, 190, So.) and Ethan Harzman (6-0, 190, So.) will be counted on to head up a more physical Alva defense this year

Dalton Manning according to Dollar. One plus for the Goldbugs defense this year will be having five returning starters back, which should allow them to transition easier into a new era of Alva football.

Sr.). If Smith does not win the quarterback job he will return to his position last season at wide receiver. Whichever senior wins the quarterback battle will have a veteran running back to hang the ball off to as two-year starter Joel Kliewer (5-10, 170) returns for his senior season.

OFFENSE The offense returns six starters heading into the 2014 season. Four of the five starters who graduated off of last year’s team were offensive linemen. The loss of the front four is the biggest question mark coming into the season for Fairview head coach Chris Cayot. The Yellowjackets will be very experienced at each skill position. Fairview will run the spread scheme on offense, but the battle for the quarterback position has yet to be decided. Two seniors are battling for the quarterback spot. Jaden Dillard (5-11, 170, Sr.) started three games for Fairview last season is battling with Jensen Smith (5-7, 155,

DEFENSE The defense returns seven starters off of a defense that allowed less than 12 points per game last season. The Yellowjackets leading tackler Jacob Eischen (6-0, 185, Sr.) returns at middle linebacker. Eischen recorded 140 tackles last season. Joining Eischen at linebacker for the second straight season is Braxton McCue (6-1, 180, Sr.). Smith and Dillard also start on defense in the secondary for the Yellowjackets. COACH: N/A ENROLLMENT: 265 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 1-9 2010 - 1-9 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 5-5 2013 - 6-5

OFFENSE After finishing last season with a 6-5 record following a first round playoff loss to Alex the Red Devils are setting their sights high this fall. A stable of running backs led by Eldaldo Gomez (5-10, 175, Sr.) are expected to make the difference for the Ringwood offense. Along with Gomez, Jordan Newcomb (6-0, 165, Sr.) and Zac Bromlow (5-11, 155, So.) are both expected to get a good amount of carries this year. Cole Swart (6-0, 170, Jr.) will

also factor into the Ringwood gameplan heavily this year at receiver.

DEFENSE In Ringwood’s 3-2 base front defensive line play will play a major role in any success the team has this year. Nose guard Jose Lucas (5-10, 290, So.) is a major run stopper while defensive ends Carlos Lucas (510, 242, Sr.) and Richard Navarro (5-11, 215, Sr.) will be an intimidating duo on the edges. Gomez will also make an impact on defense starting at linebacker with Swart bringing his size and speed to the secondary as the team’s starting safety. *No Schedule Provided. Cherokee Chiefs

COACH: Bryce Schanbacher ENROLLMENT: 88 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 5-5 2010 - 14-0 2011 - 8-3 2012 - 12-1 2013 - 12-0

OFFENSE The returning Class C champions do not appear to have lost much coming into the season. Five starters return to the offensive side of the ball for head coach Bryce Schanbacher. Included in that group is quarterback Tanner Bowman (5-9, 160, Sr.). Bowman will carry the load for the Chiefs, but he’ll get plenty of help from running back Austin Guffy (5-9, 160, Jr.). The passing game features wide receiver Avery Bagenstos (6-1, 165, Jr.) and tight end Trey Salinas (6-2, 225, Sr.). Salinas is more than just a big target downfield. His ability to seal off linebackers in the running game makes him a valuable commodity in the offense. Center Kolby Gilley (6-0, 230, Jr.) is the anchor on the line for the Chiefs. “This team is eager to get back to work. They have a great attitude and work ethic. We are very excited about this season,” said Schanbacher. DEFENSE “We have a seasoned

secondary and starting Salinas at defensive end should give us another stout defense. We must replace both linebackers, but we have the kids that can do it,” said Schanbacher. Hunter Jordan (6-2, 220, Jr.) will start opposite Salinas at defensive end. One player that can step into the linebacker spot is Dakota Knabe (6-2, 190, Sr.). Knabe has the size to be a solid run stopper and the speed to drop into coverage. Guffy and Bowman are two corners that most quarterbacks hate to see on the field. The pair can shut down the passing game of opposing teams. Overall the Chiefs are very strong at key positions and don’t appear to have glaring holes in the lineup. A tough schedule will test the team, but look for another playoff run and a possible defense of their title. “Preparing Students for Success In Education, Careers and Life!”

OFFENSE In 2013 the Tigers went 3-7 in head coach Marcus Chapman’s first year guiding the program. This season Canton hopes to improve that mark led by six returning offensive starters. Caleb Pate (6-0, 170, Sr.) will headline that group of returners starting at either running back or quarterback. MJ White Eagle (6-1, 210, Jr.) also may see some time at quarterback this year if Pate isn’t under center. Other key skill position players for the Tigers will be wide receiver Chase Hysell (6-0, 160, Jr.) and Tanner Seifried (5-8, 155, Sr.) who will start at wingback. On the offensive line Ryan Hoskins (6-1, 240, Jr.) and Eric Richter (6-1, 210, Jr.) will be counted on to keep opposing defenses from getting into the Canton backfield.

and Hysell will also both stay on the field for the Canton defense and start at cornerback. On the defensive line Canton will showcase dynamic playmaker Luke Fuqua (6-2, 200, Sr.) at end. Overall Chapman said that the toughest part of this season for his team will be an extremely challenging district schedule. “We play in the toughest district in 8-man football. We think if we can make the playoffs we will have a chance to make a run,” Chapman said.
