Quick Hits: The Bruins ended a three game losing streak to East Central with a 44-14 shellacking in week two of 2013. The Bruins and Enid have staged three classic games in a row. Bartlesville has won two of the three. The combined total score of the three games stands in favor of Bartlesville 121-119.
Bartlesville and Muskogee meet in week six. It will be the first meeting between the schools since 2009 when the Bruins edged the Roughers 35-30. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-5 2012 – 6-4 2011 – 3-7 2010 – 7-4 2009 – 9-3
OFFENSE Chemistry is important for a team to have success and no one knows that better than head coach John McKee. “We are excited about the kids we have coming back and the young kids we have coming in. It will be interesting to see how well this group can gel into a team,” said McKee. Quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selectee Colton Penrod (6-2, 190, Jr.) threw for more than 3,000 yards and 20-plus touchdowns.

AUGUST 2014
Colton Penrod Penrod joins a long line of excellent quarterbacks to come out of Bartlesville in the last decade. One of his top targets is wide receiver Tully Schaffner (6-3, 180, Sr.) who caught 26 balls for 382 yards last year. The passing game doesn’t count on just one receiver; look for Caleb Hood (5-11, 160, Sr.) to have an impact as well. Hood caught 25 balls for 317 yards in 2013. Running back Jarren Hilger (5-9, 185, Jr.) should relieve some of the pressure on Penrod as they look to open up the running game and put the offense in short yardage situations. The key for the offense remains in the hands of the offensive line. Max Davis (6-3, 330, Sr.) and Isaac Barham (6-4, 295, Jr.) are solid blockers up front and are powerful enough to move people and reach next level blocks in the running game. DEFENSE Leading tackler Tristan Crowder (6-3, 215, Jr.) is back with 73 tackles and six sacks from a year ago. Crowder may be one
Scott Martin 1967 (College) Ken Burgess 1973 Mike Coast 1976 (Sooner) Mitchell Nash 1984 Mark Miller 1988 Devin Randall 2010 Slade Nordic 2013 *Oklahoman All-State Selections
of the more athletic defensive ends in Class 6A. Seth Hinnergardt (6-1, 230, Jr.) joins Crowder on the line at defensive tackle. The team of Crowder and Hinnergardt will give opposing offensive coordinators fits. The secondary features AJ Parker (6-0, 175, Jr.) at corner who recorded five interceptions last year and made 25 solo tackles. Strong safety Nate Hansen (6-0, 175, Jr.) is a heavy hitter with good speed. Hansen will help support the linebackers trying to stop the run. One of those linebackers, Hunter Grizmaker (5-11, 195, Jr.), accounted for 50-plus tackles last year and many expect him to have an All-State type season in the 3-4 scheme. The district is stacked with several teams having the potential to take one of four playoff spots. Booker T. Washington, Bixby, Muskogee and Sapulpa are all capable of wining with Bartlesville in the middle of that group.

Nathan Hansen Bartlesville Football Nathan Hansen is a varsity football, basketball and golfer at Bartlesville High School. When he’s not at school or playing a game you can find him participating with his youth group for the LDS faith or the Boy Scouts.
Nathan said Bartlesville High School is a great place to go to school because they place an emphasis on academics and athletics. “The school challenges the students and helps them to strive to
After high school Nathan plans to serve on a two-year mission for his church. “It’s a sacrifice, but it is one I’m willing to make. I also would like to attend Stanford University because of their great medical program,” Nathan said.
Like his sister Mikah, Nathan said receiving the award with his sister is a great honor. “She is quite deserving of the award and I’m thankful that she was picked as well. To have good character isn’t just about what other people see, it’s about what you do when no one is looking. Good character can’t be faked. It is how you are as an individual. Everyone has the capacity to have good character, but those who actually put forth the effort needed to encompass themselves in an uplifting manner are the ones who exude that character.”
Mikah Hansen is a member of the varsity pom squad and the theatre program at Bartlesville High School. “I’ve mainly been dancing since I was five, but I also played basketball for a year in the eighth grade and ran track from seventh grade to ninth grade. Once I made varsity pom I decided to focus on that and stop running track,” Mikah said.
Mikah is a member of the LDS Church and said she is considering serving a one and a half year mission for the church when she turns 19. But first she is focused on graduating and making plans for college. “I really want to go to college at BYU. I would love to become a Family & Marriage Counselor or teacher.”
Mikah loves being a part of the Bruin family and said the sports programs at Bartlesville are what makes the school so great. “I love being at all the games and dancing on the sidelines and during halftime with my team. I love my team. They make me excited to go to school and I love seeing them at practice every day.”
Mikah Hansen Bartlesville Pom The Character Counts Award is important to Mikah and her family. “To me having good character means you are reliable. It means you are working hard and having integrity to not back out of something just because it gets tougher than you expected. I want my coach to be able to trust that I am going to give 100 percent all the time,” Mikah continued, “It’s awesome to be receiving this award with my twin brother. I hope we can both continue to live up to it.”

Tyler Reece Pawhuska
Academic Athlete of the Month Sophie Oates is a senior at Dewey High School and a member of the varsity cheer squad. Sophie carries a 3.8 GPA and is looking forward to the start of a new school year. “I’m excited for the new year. I was in advanced math, which is my favorite subject, and this year I am enrolled at Rogers State University for concurrent classes this fall.” In her fourth year of varsity cheer Sophie is planning to graduate and attend Oklahoma State University and possibly major in Engineering. “After high school I would like to go to OSU. I’m considering their Engineering program, but I’m leaving my options open,” said Sophie. In her free time she enjoys mentoring in the youth cheerleader program and she works as a lifeguard. “I’m a lifeguard and a mentor for the young cheerleaders and I take photos at Dewey sporting events for the yearbook.” Sophie said Dewey High School is a great place thanks to the student body. “Dewey is such a great high school because most everyone gets along, so it makes going to school so much fun.” Sophie is an excellent example of a studentathlete that takes her classroom work as serious as her athletics. For setting a great example for her peers, Sophie Oates is the Academic Athlete of the Month.
Tyler Reece is a senior at Pawhuska High School where he plays football for the Huskies. Tyler is a starting offensive lineman for the Huskies and is looking forward to the start of another season. In the classroom Tyler carries a 4.2 GPA and plans to take college courses this year. “I’ve actually ran out of honors classes to take in high school this year so I plan to take online college classes,” said Tyler. Tyler has his sights set on becoming a Sooner after high school. “I plan to attend the University of Oklahoma. I haven’t quite made up my mind about what I want to major in, but I would like to join the ROTC program at OU.” When he’s not in the classroom or on the field you can find Tyler in the weight room or spending time with his father. “If I’m not playing football or lifting weights I’m usually roping with my dad or hunting. Rodeo has always held a big role in my life.” Tyler said his favorite subject in school is math and he can’t imagine going to another high school. “Pawhuska is a great school because when it’s needed we always come together to either help cheer on our sports or help someone in need. I wouldn’t want to attend any other school.”

Lady Bruins Look for State Tournament Run in 2014
Blair Koster By Ben Johnson Bartlesville’s season got off to an ominous start in 2013. The Lady Bruins lost six of their first nine matches, with most of the losses coming against ranked teams at the Broken Arrow tournament. But Bartlesville managed to turn things around. The Bruins finished the year 19-13 and came up one victory shy of qualifying for the Class 6A state tournament.

Jenks dealt Bartlesville a playoff exit with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-12, 25-20) decision in the regional finals. But does that loss serve as motivation heading into the 2014 season? “I know the girls want to go to the state tournament every year, so I’m not sure how much of a motivator it was to lose to Jenks,” Bartlesville coach Tom Williams said. “If you end up beating people and get some wins, you don’t end up having to play the likes of the Jenks, Union or Bishop Kelley — that’s the key.”
In 2014, Bartlesville will feature three prominent seniors on the front line. Roni Courtney and Shanaye Nordic will be outside hitters, and Blair Koster will be a middle blocker, and at times, an outside hitter. The Bruins will also rely on sophomore Kailey Britt to be the team’s setter. The main objective for Bartlesville this season will be to get past its highest
hurdle the last several years: the regional finals. “It’s been a struggle the last three years,” said Williams, whose club last went to the state tournament in 2010. “Things just have happened at the end of the season, and we haven’t been able to put things together at the end of regionals.” And as is the case every year, Bartlesville will have to contend with Jenks, Union, Bishop Kelley, Owasso and others just to get to the state tournament. “The only team that we haven’t beat during my tenure is Bishop Kelley,” said Williams, who is set to begin his 10th season in Bartlesville. “You just have to consistently win against them, and that’s been the struggle. The girls have a mindset about Jenks and Union, and I tell them, ‘they’re no different than us.’ And I think they’re starting to figure that out and they’re starting to beat those teams.”
Mustangs Moving to the Oklahoma Christian Schools Association Wesleyan Christian definitely think we can be competitive A lot of kids who Mustangs COACH: Nathan England ENROLLMENT: 89 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 1-9 2010 - 3-7 2011 - 4-6 2012 - 8-4 2013 - 3-7
This season will begin the Wesleyan Christian Mustangs transition to the Oklahoma Christian Schools Association (OCSA) as the team competes in the OCSA playoffs. The Mustangs will open the season Aug. 29 against Wright Christian and then play their assigned schedule out of District B-3 before entering the OCSA playoffs on Nov. 7. Wesleyan Christian head coach Nathan England said that he is excited to see where his team matches up against other OCSA teams. “I am interested to see. I
were freshmen on our playoff team in 2012 started as sophomores last year and are juniors now,” England said. “We have lots of experience coming back. Last year was a bit of a rebuilding year but we learned a lot about who we are as a team.” Leading the team at quarterback this year will be Corey Chaney (5-8, 160, Sr.) while Josh Randolph (5-8, 150, Sr.) starts at running back. The Mustangs will also have a physical receiving corp made up of Stephen Whitehead (6-2, 215, Sr.), Alex Martinovich (6-3, 205, Sr.) and Dusty Shull (6-1, 220, Jr.). On defense the Mustangs will rely on Sam Phillips (5-10, 200, Jr.) and Jacob Pate (6-0, 195, Jr.) to lead the way on the defensive line. An aggressive cast of linebackers including Ben Hamm (5-7, 185, So.), Nathan Buzan (59, 145, So.) and Aaron Holcomb (5-10, 185, Jr.) will also play an
important role, as will Chaney and Randolph in the secondary. OFFENSE “We are excited to get back on the field. We have a lot of experienced guys returning from the last couple of years that will have a chip on their shoulder this season after losing in the second round of the playoffs the last two years,” Nowata head coach Matt Hagebush said. In the Ironmen’s Wing-T offense offensive line play is crucial and Nowata will look to senior Grayson Hass to lead a group of four returning linemen who have a combined 70 starts in their career. Behind that line Wyatt Steigerwald (6-2, 195, Sr.) will start at quarterback and distribute the ball among several key playmakers. Last season Steigerwald accumulated 2,105 yards and 28 touchdowns in his second season as Nowata’s starting quarterback. Running backs Corey Hobbs (5-9, 175, Sr.), Will Luster (5-10, 175, So.) and Wyatt Sanders (5-9, 170, Jr.) will all play major roles this season as well. In 2013 Hobbs had 1,130 yards rushing and 18 touchdowns on 162 carries while Luster added 500 all-purpose yards and seven touchdowns and Sanders chipped in 350 yards on the ground. Nowata also will have a playmaker on the outside in receiver Harry Agnew (5-10, 155, Sr.) who had 25 catches last year, five of which went for touchdowns. 14

DEFENSE VYPE Top 100 linebacker Seth Glasscock (5-11, 205, Sr.) will head up the Nowata defense this year after making 157 stops last year, 43 tackles for loss and one interception in 2013. On the defensive line tackle Jon Hughes (6-3, 265, Sr.) and ends Chad Kester (6-0, 210, Sr.) and Bryce Bell (6-2, 225, Jr.) make up a very fearsome trio. Last season Kester and Bell had 109 and 108 tackles respectively with Bell making 42 tackles for loss and Kester chipping in 40 tackles for loss. No slouch himself Hughes made 97 total tackles, 37 tackles for loss and 13 sacks. In the defensive secondary free safety Scott Pruett (6-3, 180, Sr.) made 65 tackles and had four interceptions last season and will once again be a key player to watch.
Dewey Bulldoggers
Coach: ASHLEY HENLEY Enrollment: 395 Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Nowata Sept 12 – at Pawhuska Sept. 19 – vs. Vinita Sept. 26 – at Daniel Webster Oct. 3 – at Locust Grove Oct. 10 – vs. Kellyville Oct. 16 – vs. Lincoln Christian Oct. 24 – at Berryhill Oct. 31 – at Verdigris Nov. 7 – vs. Sperry Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 5-5 2011- 4-7 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 8-5
OFFENSE After going 5-6 last season the Bulldoggers are under new leadership this season as former assistant coach Ashley Henley takes over the reigns as head coach. Henley said fans can expect more spread formation looks from his team this year but added the Bulldoggers will still be a balanced team. “We will be more spread this year with 10, 11, and 20 packages. We have three players competing to be our starting
quarterback but feel like we will be balanced offensively between the run and pass,” Henley said. “We have lots of skill kids who we like with the ball in their hands.” Competing for the quarterback job right now are senior Drew Mith, sophomore Jonathon Blackmon and freshman Blake Ford. Blackmon also has the ability to play outside at receiver making him a very versatile weapon. At running back sophomore Hunter Brewer will lead the way and create matchup problems as both a ball carrier and a pass catcher out of the backfield. Last season Brewer gained 734 all-purpose yards and had four total touchdowns. Juniors Hunter Hines and Tyran Ricks will also be key contributors at receiver this year while fellow junior Bryce Short will see a good majority of time at running back.
DEFENSE On defense the Bulldoggers will base out of a 4-3 front and consistently move their front seven according to Henley. Senior linebacker Matt Underhill will be a main cog for the Bulldoggers defense this year after making 89 tackles and three sacks as a junior. Short will also see some time at linebacker where he recorded 24 tackles last year. In the secondary juniors Hunter Hines and Kobe Morgan will be players to watch as will Blackmon who will likely start at safety. On the defensive line senior Takoda Ruble will be the team’s leader after coming up with 21 tackles in his junior campaign. Overall Henley said that his team will be inexperienced this season but that he is looking forward to what the 2014 season holds. “We will be somewhat inexperienced this season but I’m excited about our team and the work that they continue to put into the upcoming season,” Henley said. “We have multiple starting positions that kids are competing for and I expect those competitions to continue into the fall and our early non-district games. We expect to compete week in and week out as we gain experience and improve.”
Copan Hornets
COACH: GARY ASKEW ENROLLMENT: 73 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 7-4
2010 - 1-9 2011 - 2-8 2012 - 1-9 2013 - 2-8
OFFENSE The flight of the Hornets continues to improve as head coach Gary Askew enters his third season as head coach. A quartet of seniors will lead the charge this year including Jacob Price, Austin King, Wes Lawhorn and Jacob Thelan. King (5-6, 135, Sr.) and Lawhorn (6-0, 195, Sr.) are scheduled to split time taking snaps at quarterback along with Trent Still (5-6, 130, Fr.). When not at quarterback, Lawhorn will shoulder the running back duties along with Cody Pechanec (5-9, 145, So.), who returns from injured reserve and Bruce Crawford (5-7, 140, Fr.).Price will be a playmaker at tight end when not taking quarterback reps along with Josh Blackburn (5-11, 140, Jr.) at wide receiver. Thelan (6-3, 240, Sr.) and his younger brother Joseph Thelan (6-3, 186, So.) will provide muscle on the offensive line in the Hornets single wing/ spread formations. DEFENSE The experience of the four seniors will be expected to provide defensive leadership in the Hornets 3-2 formation. Jacob and Joseph Thelan and Wes Lawhorn will be the force in the front line while the duo of Jacob Price joins Cody Pechanec at linebacker. Austin King will again be the ringleader in the secondary as well as Josh Blackburn, Trent Still, and Bruce Crawford. Pawhuska Huskies
Coach: BOB CRAIG Enrollment: 253 Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Verdigris Sept. 12 – vs. Dewey Sept. 19 – vs. Hominy Sept. 26 – at Caney Valley Oct. 3 – vs. Wyandotte Oct. 10 – at Kansas Oct. 16 – at Commerce Oct. 24 – vs. Oklahoma Union
Oct. 31 – at Chelsea Nov. 7 – vs. Nowata Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-7 2012 - 4-7 2011 - 7-6 2010 - 6-5 2009 - 11-3
OFFENSE With a strong offensive line the Huskies will have a core of players capable of leading Pawhuska to a strong finish in District 2A-8. Leading that group of linemen will be the trio of Tyler Reece (6-1, 235, Sr.), Trey Powell (6-2, 235, Sr.) and Hayden Henley (6-4, 215, Jr.). The Huskies will have several questions to answer on offense this year though and chief among them will be finding a quarterback to replace last year’s starter Zalin Edwards. No matter who replaces Edwards under center the Pawhuska quarterback will have several weapons to work with. Matthew Taft (5-9, 165, Jr.) will start at running back for the Huskies this year after finishing with 397 yards and four touchdowns last season as a sophomore. Wide receiver Hayden Javellas (5-9, 160, Sr.) had 12 catches for 195
yards and three touchdowns last season and will be a key playmaker on the outside this fall as well.
DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Pawhuska only returns two starters and will be extremely young at nearly every position according to head coach Bob Craig. Marshall Tolson (6-4, 224, Sr.) will be the spark plug of the Huskies defense this year spending time at both defensive end and outside linebacker. Last season Tolson made 37 total tackles to go along with six sacks, four tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries. Another key player for the Huskies’ defense this year will be John Bighouse (6-1, 215, So.). As a freshman last season Bighouse made 64 tackles, intercepted a pass and recovered two fumbles from his spot at linebacker. Overall Craig said the key to a successful season for his team this year will be strong play from the few veterans of the program and the development of younger athletes. “With a lot of youth, the key will be getting consistent play from our experienced players until our young players mature,” Craig

OFFENSE Many new faces will receive playing time for the Trojans in 2014. “We have a lot of new players in new positions, but I expect our players to be discipline and work hard,” Caney Valley head coach Anthony Fogle said. Five starters return on offense. The offense will run the Wing-T with a mix of spread. The
Trojans will be a run first team behind two senior running backs Nathan Burwalt (5-10, 190, Sr.) and Jacob Mackey (6-1, 185, Sr.). A wide receiver that will catch defenses focusing on the run is Baily Eden (6-2, 170, Sr.). Coach Fogle wants to see his team pound the ball on the ground. “I expect us to control the ball,” Fogle said. “We want to control the time and give us a chance to win in the forth quarter.” DEFENSE Defensively the Trojans will run a 4-3 scheme. Coach Fogle believes having four down linemen will help his team get pressure on the quarterback. ”We are looking to pressure the quarterback and force turnovers,” Fogle said. “We have a pretty solid secondary that should make the quarterback pay for his mistakes.” Seth Lambert (6-0, 220, So.) will be a new face stepping into the middle linebacker spot. Lambert has great size and speed coach Fogle is excited to see how Lambert performs in 2014. Travis Talbot (5-10, 190, Sr.) gives opposing quarterbacks trouble with his quickness.

OFFENSE Some people may think of it as a sleepy little town but around District 5A-4 nobody is sleeping on the Grove Ridgerunners. After finishing 2-8 in 2013 the Ridgerunners return five starters on offense and are looking to make big improvements this season. Everything will start up front for Grove this season with Case Hampton (6-2, 245, Sr.) anchoring the offensive line. Dominic Flores (6-0, 265, Sr.) will also be a key part of the offensive line this year. In the offensive backfield Brady Phillips (6-0, 160, So.), Cole Sharp (5-8, 155, Sr.) and Garrett Sisco (5-8, 175, Sr.) will all carry the ball at times this season. Sisco will most likely start at fullback this season while Phillips and Sharp bring their speed to the tailback spot.
DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Grove will be very strong up front with Colby Layman (5-10, 220, Sr.) and Braxton Miller (6-0, 175, Jr.) starting at the two defensive end spots. Hampton will also be a crucial part of the defensive line this year starting at tackle. In the middle of the defense the Ridgerunners will count on Dylan
Cole Sharp Johnson (6-0, 205, Sr.) and Harley Apperson (6-0, 165, Sr.) to make plays at linebacker. Overall Grove will try to improve on their 2013 average off 33 points surrendered per game while competing in a very tough district that includes some of Class 5A’s top offenses in Pryor, East Central, Coweta and Collinsville. Ketchum Warriors Coach: CARL LEE Enrollment: 186 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 4-6 2010 - 2-8 2011 - 1-9 2012 - 2-8 2013 - 3-7
OFFENSE The Warriors begin a new venture with the move to Class A football in 2014 and the leadership of a new head coach, Carl Lee. Ketchum’s multiple formation offense will showcase the skills of Zack Royal (5-10, 165, Sr.). A three sport competitor, Royal has the talent to create opportunities for success running or throwing the football. Chase Monroe (6-1, 190, Sr.) has the versatility to give Lee multiple options as a running back or receiver. Warrick Bark (6-0, 220, Jr.) is a bruising type runner with deceptive speed. The Warriors receiving unit has multiple talents including Jonathan Swartz (5-7, 150, So.), described by Lee as a possession receiver that will catch the ball in a crowd along with Jay Prescott (6-3, 175, Fr.) who has speed to stretch the field for big plays. Scout Brown (6-3, 250, Jr.) returns hard nosed technique to the front line along with Garrett Janway (6-0, 265, Jr.), called by Lee as another coach on the field. “Athleticism and size up front strengthens our running game,” said Lee. “With Royal’s ability to make decisions on the go, I’m confident that our passing game will balance the offensive game plan.” DEFENSE The Warriors will attack its opponents with a physical group of linebackers that, according to Lee, are headhunters on a mission. Frankie Delasante (6-1, 200, Jr.) is described as an old school linebacker with run and cover abilities to make game changing plays joins
hard hitting Chase Monroe and Kenny Setters (6-0, 225, Jr.), who will call the defensive sets in the Warriors 3-4 formation. Mitchell Pullen (6-4, 260, Sr.) is a hard to block mountain at defensive end along with Brown while Janway anchors the middle at nose guard. The secondary is solid with the consistent play of Derrick Tibbs (5-10, 160, Sr.), Charles Donovan (5-9, 155, So.) along with Royal and Swartz. The schedule favors Ketchum early as five of first six games will be played at home. “The move to Class A is another plus for our expectations for success,” said Lee. “Our combination of talent matched with effort gives us reason to believe that we’ll push for a top four finish in the districts and a ticket to the playoffs.”
getting the ball into the right players hands. When they are looking to pass, expect Casey Pendergraft (5-11, 185, Sr.) to be on the receiving end of a lot of those attempts. The offensive line will be anchored by Myles Ferguson (5-10, 175, Jr.) along with multi-talented Blake Wisdom (6-2, 230, Sr.) at tight end.

OFFENSE Offensively, coach Gardner will have a lot of tools to work with this season with a lot of threats to score the ball. They should be very balanced, operating out of the one back/gun. The Eagles will look for Garrett Gaines (5-10, 185, Jr.) to do big things again this year and carry the load on the ground. Cooper Mitchell (5-10, 170, Sr.) will be at quarterback
DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles will be very physical and the backbone of the defense will be Blake Wisdom, one of the states leading tacklers, returning for his senior season. With Wisdom at linebacker, he will be playing behind a couple defensive ends in seniors Teddy Jones (6-0, 185) and Anthony Garrett (5-7, 150). The backfield will be patrolled by Gabe Mustain (5-10, 165, So.) at free safety. When he’s not evading tacklers, Garrett Gaines will be using his athleticism as rover in the Eagles 40 base defense. Coach Gardner feels that Afton can compete at a high level week in and week out. “We will have our hands full with our non-district schedule, but hopefully it will make us a better team in the end”.
Fairand Owls
COACH: AUSTIN MARTIN ENROLLMENT: 174 Last 5 Years: 2009 - 3-7 2010 - 5-5 2011 - 5-5 2012 - 6-4 2013 - 4-6
OFFENSE Head coach Austin Martin
returns six starters from last year’s team, but is still fairly young at several key positions. Quarterback Justin Payne (5-10, 165, Jr.) will run a spread, flexbone style offense and look to control the game by moving the ball and running some clock. He has three exceptional athletes at his disposal. Cody Koger (5-9, 175, Jr.) and Kody Benton (5-8, 160, So.) are two running backs that can step out and play wide receiver. Senior Aaron Mann (5-8, 165) will see time at running back giving the Owls three options on the ground. Cullen Coffey (5-10, 290, Jr.) is the key to the offensive line. His play and the play of a few new faces up front will help determine who wins the battle for field position. DEFENSE Like the offense, the defense returns six starters including Garrett Davis (5-10, 160, Jr.) at free safety. Davis plays a crucial role in coach Martin’s philosophy of no big play and playing fast to the ball. Linebackers Kyler Vannoster (5-10, 190, Jr.) and Tyson Frantz (5-10, 175, Jr.) run well to the ball and can give the Owls a presence in stopping the run or the pass. Look for a big impact from defensive lineman Chance Stotts (6-4, 240, Sr.). If Stotts can get a big push up front, it could free up a linebacker to roam free and make plays. Tristan Parsons (5-9, 175, Jr.) is another defensive lineman joining Stotts in the trenches. Coach Martin wants his guys to “lead with actions, not words,” and that’s exactly what this defensive group will do this season.

vinita hornets OFFENSE Conversation is abuzz involving the Hornets football prospects for 2014. Mike Christy takes charge as head coach trying to restore the winning ways for Vinita. After spending last season at wide receiver, Ethan Gibson (5-11, 150, Jr.) moves to quarterback in the multiple formation offense tough minded running backs including Jake Ordner (6-0, 165, Sr.) and Alex Kauffman (5-11, 165, So.), a wrestling state qualifier, will get the majority of the carries. Adding size and power to the misdirection offense at fullback will be Brooks Bowser (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Stefan Frost (5-10, 215, Jr.). With Gibson moving to quarterback, Brad Cook (5-11, 150, Jr.) returns experience at wide receiver while David Bowlin (6-2, 200, Jr.), who missed much of 2013 with a knee injury, returns to tight end along with Hayden Brown (511, 185, Sr.).
DEFENSE After last year learning under fire, the Hornets defensive unit returns with proven performers. Bowser, who anchored the defensive front last year, will move to linebacker to join Ordner, a three year regular in the middle of the 4-3 alignment. Chris Armijo (5-11, 175, Jr.) and Frost will share time at linebacker as well. Adding size and strength to the defensive front will be Enyart, Moss and Warren while Bowlin and Brown control the edge at defensive end. Gibson will see two-way duty again at cornerback while Kauffman brings a physical approach at free safety.
Commerce Tigers Coach: STEVE MOSS Enrollment: 212 Last 5 Years: 2013 - 11-1 2012 - 11-2 2011 - 8-4 2010 - 11-2 2009 - 9-3 OFFENSE The Tigers have totaled 30 wins over the past three seasons and are eager to make 2014 a sixth straight playoff bound campaign. And while there will be new faces on the offensive unit that produced a 40-point per game average last season, Commerce welcomes a group of players eager to create their own highlights. Trenton Barr (5-10, 170, Jr.), who gained 820 yards rushing in 2013, will once again bring his speed and agility to tailback position along with the talents of Brooks Stevenson (5-7, 170, Sr.) and Mitchell Johnston (5-7, 165, Sr.). Team camps and summer passing leagues will give head coach Steve Moss added opportunities to decide who will be the Tigers quarterback where Bryen Cunningham (6-0, 200, Sr.) and Jacob Pittman (6-0, 160, Jr.) are locked in a tough competition for the starting nod. The survivor at quarterback will have the other as a wide receiver target along with Duncan Rowan (6-0, 170, Sr.) while Connor Kurtz (6-2, 190, Sr.) takes over at tight end. The success of the Tigers splitback veer option will also rely upon the play in the offensive line that will include Trace Craghead (6-2, 260, Sr.) along with Travis Allen (6-0, 210, Sr.), Jowa Zamarripa (5-11, 280, Sr.) and Daniel Hutson (5-11, 190, Sr.). “We’re young by starting experience measures,” admits Moss, who begins his fourth year at Commerce, “but the heart of the Tiger beats strong with each player ready to make things happen. DEFENSE The defensive lineup includes a trio of starters including Zamarripa, a four year starter at defensive tackle who made 79 tackles last season. Adding to the Tigers ability to control the line of scrimmage will be nose guard Donnie Brown (5-10, 275, So.) while Kurtz and Allen will take their place at defensive end. Cunningham returns at linebacker where he made 22 tackles in 2013 along with Hudson and Johnston. Barr, the third returning starter, will man the strong safety position while coaches
evaluate performances throughout the summer to determine the remaining three positions as 8-10 players are vying for starting roles. One added plus for the Tigers will be the return of kicking specialist Nate Rogers (6-0, 190, Sr.), who has college recruiters attention. “Practices have been intense as players prove their commitment to our program,” said Moss. “We hit the ground running as our first four games are against top notch programs. I’m convinced by the hard work of our players we’ll come ready to play.” Sept. 5 – at Stroud Sept. 12 – vs. Afton (at NEO) Sept. 19 – vs. Colcord Sept. 26 – at Nowata Oct. 3 – vs. Caney Valley Oct. 10 – at Wyandotte Oct. 16 – vs. Pawhuska Oct. 24 – OPEN Oct. 31 – at Oklahoma Union Nov. 7 – vs. Chelsea

One possibility at the quarterbacking spot will be move-in Nolan Shaper (6-2, 150, So.). Production in the running game will fall on the shoulders of Josh Orler (5-11, 170, Sr.) who saw limited action last year, and Josh Baker (5-5, 145, Fr.). Hard hitting center Cody Schultz (6-2, 275, Sr.) will again anchor the offensive line. “Although we’ll be young, I think we’ll be more explosive on offense this year,” says Gleaves. DEFENSE Giving up an average of over 50 points per game last season, the Wildcat defense will be seeking some answers during two-a-days. “We’re looking to get back to what we’ve been successful doing in the past, so we’re switching back to a 3-1 defensive front in hopes of being more physical upfront,” says Gleaves. In addition to Orler who had 66 tackles last season, the Wildcats will welcome back defensive backs Brandon Hembree (5-6, 150, Sr.), who was injured most of last year, and Seth
Chapman (5-6, 150, So.) who racked up 67 tackles last season as a freshman. Gleaves also has high hopes for in-coming freshman Gunner Johnson (6-0, 145, Fr.) who will man either a linebacker or defensive back spot. Competition at key positions will help the coaching staff determine who gives them the best chance at winning ball games moving forward. A few players to watch on offense include Keith Attocknie (5-9, 145, Sr.), Tyler Hemphill (5-8, 135, Jr.), Alec Hayward (6-1, 215, Jr.) and Tristan Barnes (6-3, 215, Sr.).
DEFENSE A priority on defense is keeping opponents out of the endzone and forcing teams into third and long plays. The Wildcats will look to several players for pressure up front and a defensive secondary that will keep all of the big plays in front of them. Look for Dusty Davis (5-6, 210, Jr.), Carter Kelly (6-0, 160, Sr.), Carder Schroeder (6-5, 280, Sr.) and Derek Shallenburger (5-10, 195, So.) to be just a few of the guys looking to get the job done on defense. 2012 - 8-2 2013 - 10-2 OFFENSE The Chieftains expectations are sky high as six starters return to the offensive unit that averaged 41 points per contest last year. The triple-threat offense will again have the talents of Tanner McHone (6-2, 165, Sr.) at quarterback while Dylon Wells (5-6, 150, Jr.) and Tristan Mitchell (5-6, 150, Sr.) at running back. Wells totaled 15 touchdowns while gaining 900 yards rushing and Mitchell added 600 yards and 8 scores on the ground. The success of the “Renegade Pistol” formation will be anchored by the play of Mason Tharp (5-10, 255, Sr.) at center and Kade North (6-0, 275, Jr.) at guard. “We’re going to stay in the spread formation and run the football,” said head coach Ronnie Simmons. “Our playbook is designed to maximize the big offensive lineman with the small quick backs to run the football and then hit the big play throwing the ball deep.” DEFENSE Experience and depth will be an added plus the for Chieftains defensive unit. Chalin Roberts (5-8, 175, Sr.), who recorded 152 tackles including 7 for loss, will captain the 3-2 alignment along with Ashton Baker (5-10, 225, Sr.), who returns after missing seven games due to a knee injury. Terrell Bluejacket (6-5, 195, Sr.) is an intimidating factor at defensive end that totaled 102 stops including 14 sacks in 2013. The play in the secondary will feature Coltin Smith (5-8, 145, Sr.) and Eric Andrade (5-10, 205, Sr.), who also missed 9 games due to a knee injury last year. The success of the past two seasons has Bluejacket coaches and players with desires of taking things to a higher level in 2014. “There are several teams capable of making the playoffs in our district,” said Simmons. “And, in Class C, Cherokee and Tipton are still strong plus Fox has dropped down. miami wardogs OFFENSE A win to end the 2013 season and a new home for Wardogs football and the excitement for the 2014 campaign is building in Miami. James Cheatham enters his second year at the helm with five starters returning on the offensive side of the football. Christian Folks (5-10, 180, Jr.) returns as the leading rusher from a year ago in the hurry up style offensive scheme. Dillon Hall (6-0, 180, Jr.) moves into the spotlight as the starting quarterback looking to throw the ball to wide receivers Braden Hessee (6-0, 170, Jr.), who averaged 14 yards per catch last season, along with Taylor Witham (5-10, 190, Sr.), who picked up an average of 10 yards per reception. DEFENSE The Wardogs 4-2-5 scheme welcomes seven starters returning from last season with a year’s experience underneath the Friday night lights. Integral parts to the success in 2014 will be the play at linebacker where Dillon Hall, who
James Cheatham totaled 155 tackles a year ago, teams up with Irvin Myers (5-11, 180, Jr.), whose numbers included 74 stops last season. Three year regular Blake Ragsdale (6-1, 205, Sr.) presents a physical presence at defensive end following an 87 tackle effort in 2013 while Jerry Reed will add to the aggressive nature of the four man front. The umbrella coverage in the secondary will be anchored by Ryan Perry (5-10, 160, Jr.) who tallied a pair of interceptions last year. “Experience under the lights makes us better,” admits Cheatham. “We’re a more mature team regarding our understanding the offense and defensive scheme. Add the new stadium and the Wardog pride is no doubt contagious throughout the community. We’re expecting positive things this season. Photos By: Jim Ellis, Miami News-Record

OFFENSE “We are a special team that likes to be balanced evenly between the run and pass. Brandon Weaver has the arm and accuracy to make us a threat in the passing game and seniors Justin Beasley, Joe Sirmans and River Martinez will share the carries in the backfield,” said Wegner. Weaver (6-2, 200, Jr.) threw for 1,500 yards and 12 touchdowns last year. One of his favorite targets was Hayden Cunningham (5-10, 175, Jr.) who accounted for 486 yards of offense and two touchdowns. Trey Baker (6-1, 165, Sr.) brings experience and speed to the wide out position. The offensive line is crucial for the Bulldogs this season with Gage Gardener (5-11, 210, Jr.) and Kongmeng Vang (5-10, 180, Jr.) both returning this season. Younger players on the line will need to mature and step up if Weaver is going to have time to find an open man downfield. DEFENSE “There will be a lot of new faces on the defensive side of the ball, but we expect them to fly around and be disciplined. Not giving up he big play will be the key for us this year,” said Wegner. “We replace eight defensive starters so our young kids will have to step up and play.” Baker and Martinez will start in the secondary at free safety and strong safety respectively. Cunningham is one of the outside linebackers coach Wegner will use in the 3-3 stack. The defense will have their hands full with pass happy teams like Locust 26

Coach: STEVE PATTERSON Last 5 Years: 2013 - 6-5 2012 - 9-3 2011 - 7-4 2010 - 5-5 2009 - 4-6 Enrollment: 305
Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Lincoln Christian Sept. 11 – vs. Locust Grove Sept. 19 – at Westville Sept. 26 – at Hulbert Oct. 3 – vs. Adair Oct. 10 – vs. Pawhuska Oct. 16 – vs. Chouteau Oct. 24 – at Colcord Oct. 31 – at Haskell Nov. 7 – vs. Salina
OFFENSE The Comets open the doors to a new captain of the ship as Steve Patterson takes over as head coach. Kansas, which reached the Class 2A playoff party in 2013, returns eight starters to the offensive unit that will use a variety of formations from the 1-back and 2-back spread alignments. Jared Hogshooter (5-10, 170, Jr.) will handle the quarterback duties where last year the versatile athlete averaged 4.8 yards per carry and completed 53% of his passes. “He’s a true competitor,” said Patterson, who can run as well as throw effectively on the move.” A trio of running backs including Levi Hyso (5-10, 190 Sr.), who averaged 5.2 per carry, along with Takota Dobbs (5-10, 195, Sr.) and Tyler King (5-11, 190, Sr.) who missed 2013 due to an ACL injury, will provide a solid ground attack. “They’re all strong runners,” said
Rowdy Chesser
Patterson. “hard to bring down and capable of grinding out the extra yard.” Rowdy Chesser (6-2, 180, Sr.) will join Kalin Parsons (6-1, 170, So.), Jonathan Noe (5-9, 160, Jr.) and Sheldon Snell (5-9 170, So.) in the Comets receiver rotation along with Dexter Nichols (6-2, 210, Jr.) at tight end. Kansas will employ the skills of Justus Hogshooter (6-1, 260 Sr.), Alan Davis (5-8, 250, Sr.), Jordan Robbins (6-1, 290, Sr.) and Devon Watkins (6-2, 290, Sr.) to control the line of scrimmage. “Our size, strength and experience up front will be a definite advantage for us,” said Patterson.
DEFENSE Depth at linebacker and defensive front will be definite advantages for the Comets defense that returns eight starters from last year. Tyler King’s return from the knee injury plus the skill set of Takota Dobbs, who recorded 75 tackles including 12 for loss, Levi Hyso, Mark Blizzard (5-10, 190, Jr.) and Brendon Robbins (5-9, 170, Fr.) provides a sound linebacker unit. Devon Watkins, Justus Hogshooter, Jordan Robbins will be difficult to move off the defensive front while Dexter Nichols and Josh Niccum (6-0, 190, Sr.) will crash down from their defensive end positions. Rowdy Chesser and Jared Hogshooter along with Kalin Parsons will offer coverage again in the secondary after the 2013 Comet crew grabbed 11 interceptions. “The kids are buying into the new system,” smiled Patterson. “Our efforts in spring ball and summer team camp have me #CodeRed excited to see where we’ll end up in the district playoff mix. The Comets will be tried and tested early playing four of its first five games on the road.
Wyandotte Bears Coach: Brad HOMER Last 5 Years: 2012 - 5-6 2011 - 9-3 2010 - 0-10 2009 - 0-10 Enrollment: 235
Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Fairland Sept. 12 – vs. Adair
Sept. 19 – at Marionville, MO. Sept. 26 – vs. Afton Oct. 3 – at Pawhuska Oct. 10 – vs. Commerce Oct. 16 – at Oklahoma Union Oct. 24 – vs. Chelsea Oct. 31 – at Nowata Nov. 7 – vs. Caney Valley
OFFENSE The hopes are high for the Bears coming into the year with nine returning starters on both sides of the ball. “We will ride our senior leadership,” Wyandotte head coach Brad Homer said. “With 18 seniors we have high expectations for the 2014 season.” The offense line provides the backbone of the Bears offense. Five seniors will start up front anchored by Sammy Quick (6-1, 175, Sr.). The Bears look to spread the ball across the field this season with Gunner Hudson (6-0, 175, Sr.) calling the signals. Hudson has several dangerous playmakers playing along side him to get the ball too. Clayton Stone (5-10, 165, Sr.), Braxton Doutrit (5-11, 170, Sr.) and Carson Loncarich (5-9, 165, Sr.) lead the Bears with their ability to make plays with the ball in their hands. The three playmakers create trouble for opponents who wont be able to key on one offense of playmaker.
DEFENSE Wyandotte enters the 2014 campaign very experienced on defense. The Bears return nine starters on defense. Wyandotte runs a 3-4 defense, the Bears play physical. Coach Homer wants his defense to fly around the field and run to the football. Last years defense held opponents offense under 20 points per game. The defense returns the district 2A-8 linebacker of the year Angel Torres (5-10, 175, Sr.). The Bears look for another big year out of Seth Shuttlesworth (6-1, 175, Sr.) after an outstanding season last year. In 2013 Shuttlesworth recorded 58 tackles, seven for a loss, nine sacks, and five fumble recoveries. Shuttlesworth and Torres leadership on the field with both their abilities to make plays and get their teammates in the right position will make the Bears defense stout. After missing the playoffs last season Wyandotte is hungry to make it back to post season play.

Quick Hits: Pryor and Claremore move their long time rivalry to week one of the season. The two teams met every year from 1923 until 2005. The series took a four year break and resumed in 2010. Pryor has won three of the last four including 35-26 in 2013.
Miami drops off the Pryor schedule for the first time in 16 years. Miami defeated the Tigers 32-20 in 2013 and won 10 of the 16 games during that time span.
The Tigers hosted a playoff game in 2013 for only the fourth time in more than 20 years. Pryor won three of those contests, losing only to Ardmore in the second round of the 2011 post season. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 8-4 2012 - 4-6 2011 – 9-3 2010 – 4-6 2009 – 6-5
OFFENSE The installation of the triple option offense is complete at Pryor. It wasn’t the smoothest transition for the Tigers. Coming off of a 4-6 record in 2012, Pryor head coach Jason Freeman knew they needed a complete makeover. It was a slow start in 2013 with a 1-2 start in the non-district schedule. Pryor would then win five straight and have a de-facto district championship game against Collinsville. They would lose, but finished second in the district after being predicted to finish sixth before the season. Nobody will predict Pryor to finish sixth in 2014. With VYPE Top 100 quarterback Brennon

Ryan Ogg Barth (5-11, 185, Sr.) returning, the Tigers won’t sneak up on anybody in 2013. Barth was one of the leading rushers in 5A last season. He ran for over 1,800 yards and a staggering 37 touchdowns. Joining Barth in the backfield is fullback Timmy Stimson (5-11, 175, Sr.). Stimson battled injuries in 2013 but saw time at fullback. He replaces Matt McGouldrick who ran for over 1,000 yards. For the first time ever in school history, Pryor had two 1,000 yard rushers in 2013. They’re hoping they have back to back seasons reaching that mark. While the bread and butter of Pryor’s offense is running the ball, 2014 could see more passing. This summer Barth is working on the pass game more to prepare for certain situations. He’ll have some of the biggest targets in Oklahoma in his tight ends. Ryan Ogg (6-6, 235, Sr.), and Zaph Bobb (6-6, 220, Jr.) provide Barth with can’t miss targets. Three starters return on the offensive line to lead the Pryor rushing attack. Nick Giltner (5-11, 260, Sr.), Brandon Pope (6-3, 230, Sr.) and Dylan T. Couch (6-3, 250,
Monty Dossman 1979 *Oklahoman All-State Selections
DEFENSE Five defensive starters return for the Tigers. Most of the players for Pryor play on both sides of the ball. Ryan Ogg could be a dominant defensive player for the Tigers in 2014. At 6-foot-6, Ogg lines up as a standup defensive end and could cause havoc on opponent’s offenses. Timmy Stimson battled a foot injury last year, but saw a majority of action on defense. He’ll be back in 2014 to lead the linebacker unit. Brennon Barth also sees time in the secondary as a cornerback. The Tigers eclipsed expectations last year when they made it the 5A quarterfinals for the second time in three years. In 2014, those expectations have reached another level. “Expectations for Pryor football are higher than they’ve ever been,” Freeman said. “Pryor has never won ten games and has never made it to the semi-finals. That’s our goal.” The Tigers were a one step short of the semifinals last season, they plan to finish this year.

OFFENSE The Warriors have won 33 games the past three seasons and enter 2014 with skill personnel of offense capable of keeping the high-powered offense putting points on the scoreboard. After producing over 3,000 total yards offense as a freshman, B.J. Bradbury (6-2, 180, So.) will call the signals at quarterback. Last year, Bradbury completed 145227 passes for 2,321 yards and 35 touchdowns and only 6 INT. A dual threat to run, Bradbury looks to expand on his 985 yards and 11 TD rushing performance in 2014. Another playmaker will be Cody Eby (5-10, 165, Jr.), who totaled 18 touchdowns including 909 yards rushing. The receiving corps is talent rich with Hunter Rosebrough (5-10, 175, Sr.), who amassed 40 catches and 13 TD last year joining Brock Martin (6-1, 175, Jr.), who recorded 38 receptions last season. Only one starter returns in the offensive line where Levi Hudson (5-11, 235, Sr.) who graded out at 91% on the year, will be joined by a quality group of players that got first team reps last year. “We’ve
DEFENSE While the Warriors offense burned out lights on the scoreboard in 2013, Adair’s defense was equally effective allowing only 152 points in 13 games with their attacking 3-4 alignment. Among the eight starters returning, linebackers Walker Graves (5-10, 205, Jr.) and James Eastin (6-1, 185, Sr.) will again run to the football. Bradbury, who snatched 7 interceptions at free safety, will be joined by Taylor Conseen (6-0, 175, Jr.) and Eby, who each made three interceptions in 2013. Lane Yoder (6-0, 215, Jr.) and Hudson will anchor the defensive front. “Our overall team speed let’s us fly to the football,” said Lippe. “The experience at linebacker and secondary is a bonus.”
Chouteau-Mazie Wildcats Coach: MARK JONES Last 5 Years: 2013 - 4-6 2012 - 2-8 2011 - 3-7 2010 - 2-8 2009 - 1-9 Enrollment: 203

OFFENSE The Wildcats have high expectations for 2014 with six starters returning on offense including the one-two punch of running backs Garrett Grossman and Robert Evans. Grossman (5-9, 165, Sr.) brings speed and big play potential to the backfield while Evans (5-11, 180, Sr.) delivers power to the Wildcats’ I-formation attack. “We’re expecting big plays from both of them,” said head coach Mark Jones, who begins his fourth season as head coach. “Garrett’s
explosiveness makes him a threat to score anywhere on the field and Robert’s knowledge of the game coupled with his strength gives us that extra yard to move the down markers.” The pair of running backs will have size and experience leading the way as Payne King, who earned 2A-7 All-District lineman of the year honors as a junior, returns with Ben Cowan (6-3, 260, Jr.) and Tyler Blaylock (5-11, 170, Sr.) giving the ‘Cats ability to control the line of scrimmage. Colton Hunter (5-8, 165, Sr.) brings athleticism and good field vision to the quarterback position. DEFENSE Five starters return to the Wildcats 3-5 alignment including the pursuit and technique of Evans and Blaylock at linebacker. Chouteau’s ability to pressure opposing quarterbacks and control line of scrimmage will include the play of King and Cowan at defensive tackles. The speed and coverage talents of Hunter and Grossman give Jones’ security in the secondary along with Trevor Searcy (6-0, 150, So.). “We won our first district game since 2006 last year and we’re building on that,” said Jones. “We’re in a new district this year. Our kids want to win like everyone else and their effort shows me they believe they’ve got a shot at earning a spot in the playoffs this year.”

OFFENSE After making a run to the Class 3A quarterfinals last season the Pirates are once again searching for the gold ball this season. “Going into our third year of the program, we are excited to see what 2014 holds. With 16 returning starters off a 12-1 team, we expect to compete for the gold ball in a super competitive Class 3A,” head coach Matt Hennesy said. “Our kids have learned our expectations and schemes and are looking forward to being mentioned in the top programs in the state.” Quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selection Mason Fine (6-0, 180, Jr.) will be piloting the Locust Grove offense this year. Last season Fine exploded onto the scene as a sophomore completing 256 of 414 passes for 3,229 yards and 35 touchdowns. Fine’s favorite target last year, Jason Pirtle (6-3, 198, Jr.) is also back after catching

53 passes for 970 yards and nine touchdowns last year to go along with his two punt return touchdowns. Both Fine and Pirtle garnered big honors this offseason by being selected to the USA U17 team. Receivers Calin Witt (5-11, 185, Sr.) and Brock Taylor (6-1, 180, Sr.) will also be regular targets for Fine this season. On the offensive line Daniel Woodruff will be the leader of the pack as he begins his third season as a starter for the Pirates. “We will be a fast-paced, no-huddle spread offense. We averaged 50 points a game in 2013 and with the majority of the ‘Pirate Assault’ back we expect to be even more explosive in 2014,” Hennesy said. DEFENSE Running an attacking 3-4 defense Hennesy said he also expects big things on this side of the ball as well. “We are an attacking defense that averaged four takeaways a game in 2013. With the majority of our ‘Legion of Doom’ defense back we expect to create even more big plays and be better at stopping the run,” Hennesy said. Linebacker Trevor Taylor (5-11, 195, Jr.) will be a key player to watch on defense this season after
he made an amazing 227 tackles last season, made three sacks and recovered four fumbles. Fellow linebacker Vance Wilson (5-8, 185, Sr.) also broke the 200 tackles mark last season recording 205 stops, four sacks and three fumble recoveries. On the defense line things all begin with the disruptive presence of nose guard Dustin Remer (5-10, 220, Sr.). Remer made 134 tackles had eight sacks and 28 tackles for loss as a junior last season. Locust Grove also has a very talented secondary headlined by cornerbacks Cutter Stamper (5-10, 170, Jr.) and Witt. Pirtle will also play in the secondary, starting at free safety. Stamper and Pirtle both had four interceptions last year while Witt added two.
Salina Wildcats
Coach: MATT WILLIAMS Last 5 Years: 2013 - 9-3 2012 - 4-6 2011 - 2-8 2010 - 7-5 2009 - 11-2 Enrollment: 263 Schedule:

OFFENSE New head coach Matt Williams inherits a solid returning cast for the Wildcats as they look to move beyond the second round of the playoffs in 2014. Though Salina returns six players on the offense, some of them will be in new positions when the lights go on in September. First and foremost will be Kyle Johnson (6-0, 165, Sr.). Used as a running back last year, Johnson seems to be the most likely to take over the quarterbacking duties for the Wildcats as well as maintaining his responsibilities as the Wildcat place kicker where he was 90 percent on extra points and fourof-six in the field goal department. Ashton Gann (6-0, 235, Sr.) will move from the offensive line to the fullback spot where his size should help him continue to punish defensive linemen. The Wildcats

return center Chandler Beck ( 5-11, 230, Sr.) and a bookend pair of tight ends in Colton Burgess (64, 230, Sr.) and Tyler Underwood (6-3, 225, Sr.) that will help in blocking the complex triple option offense or be big targets for Johnson.
DEFENSE The defensive line should be a big key to the Wildcats success this season. They return five starters including four down linemen that will anchor the 5-2 defense that Williams will retain. Gann (46 tackles in 2014) and Underwood (30 tackles last year) will be the defensive ends that have the size and speed to pressure opposing quarterbacks. In between those two on the line will be Jared Mellonberg (5-11, 215, Jr. with 23 tackles last year), and Connor Stuart (5-11, 235, So.). The Wildcats will also welcome back linebacker Christian Wilson (5-9, 175, Sr.) who started as a sophomore, but missed most of last year with an injury. “Our front seven will be the strength of our defense,” says Williams.
