an excellent shot at entering the record books.

Tanner (3B), Hannah Danielson (OF), Kaylon Dunn (OF), Ashyton Crouch (C), Julia Minter (1B-P), and Katelyn Gamble (OF).

Character is a combination of qualities that distinguishes one person or group from another. We celebrate achievements of local high school athletes by presenting the monthly “Character Counts Award.” Deer Creek Lady Antlers senior centerfielder Jordan Williams is the Edmond Character Counts Athlete of the Month. Along with being a spark plug for the Lady Antlers softball team, Williams also plays golf at Deer Creek. Outside of athletics Williams is also involved in National Honor Society, has been a class officer for the past two years, and is a member of the Deer Creek

Link Crew, which helps freshmen transition easily into high school.

Being involved in so many activities and sports it wouldn’t seem like Williams has that much spare time on her hands but when she does get an extra minute or two Williams says she likes to go to her brother’s baseball games, go to the lake and hang out with her friends and boyfriend.

Madison Forman

Edmond Santa Fe High School How long have you been involved in FCA? Since I was a freshman, so this will be my 4th year as a senior. Who influenced you to join? My track coach Mr. Kurt Thomas.

How has FCA made an impact in your life on the field and off the field? FCA has reinforced my belief that my talents are 100% God-given and that I should use this blessing to glorify His name at all times. Off the field, FCA has acted as “spiritual weightlifting” as it has helped me to gain more knowledge about Christ, brought Godly friends into my life, and all around strengthen my relationship with Him.

How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? Knowing that my talent comes completely from God has helped to keep my eye on the actual prize, to do all things to glorify Him, and not just the first place medal. In moments during a race where I felt weak or incapable of finishing, I’ve relied on Christ’a strength to carry me through; after all, I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength, right? It has also allowed to have a grateful heart because I know the incredible teammates, coaches and equipment I am surrounded with are all gifts from God to allow me to cultivate the talent he has blessed me with.

How have you used your beliefs or association with FCA to help others or spread the word? My association with FCA has brought many Christian athletes into my life as well as given me a way to easily talk about Christ to my teammates by inviting them to FCA. My strong relationship with God makes it easy for me to pray for my teammates and keep a positive attitude. As I have tried to let God’s love shine through me, others have seen it and craved for it. Being from Oklahoma, the belt buckle of the Bible Belt, it’s hard to find people who don’t know about God’s love or what He’s done for them, but it is easy to find people who are doing the bare minimum in their relationship with Christ and FCA has given me a way to help them learn to grow with Christ, just as it did for me.

What Edmond area teams have the best shot to make the state championship game in Stillwater? Edmond Memorial Bulldogs Head coach Justin Merideth and the Memorial Bulldogs are on the hunt for a playoff spot and a trip to Stillwater in December. The electric Warren Wand accounted for 1,812 yards and 15 touchdowns last season and is expected to have a repeat performance in 2013. Wand is joined in the backfield by two athletic quarterbacks in Luke Booker and Mick Mayerske. The trio create problems for defensive coordinators looking to shut down the Memorial offense. Joining Wand in the VYPE Top 100 is linebacker Jake Mammen. The hard-hitting Mammen leads a tough group of Dawgs on defense hunting for that playoff spot. Edmond Santa Fe Wolves

Justice Hansen enters his senior season motivated to lead the Wolves back to the playoffs and a run at a state title. Hansen, a commit to the University of Oklahoma, has several targets in the Santa Fe arsenal

including Quinzell Jones, Kaden Mendenhall and Malcolm Dade. Move-in Michael Farmer figures heavy into the running game for the Wolves. Farmer could be the missing piece of the puzzle for the Santa Fe. Middle linebacker Vessie Parrish is one of many standout players the Wolves have playing defense this season. Look for Edmond Santa Fe to punch their ticket to Stillwater this season. Edmond North Huskies

A great run in 2012 has fueled the Huskies for another playoff run in 2013. Head coach Scott Berger has the team believing they belong in the conversation for state and who can argue with players like Stephen McClearnan, Shane Taylor and Luke Rossi. The Dixon brothers have become the talk of the town. Joel, Andrew and Lance are special players that work hard and bring that wrestling mentality to the football field. The Huskies have no limit on how far they can go this season and when the dust settles in late

November Edmond North should be there, bags packed for Stillwater.

Oklahoma Christian School Saints The defending state champions in Class 2A did graduate several key players, however Will McKinnis has stepped in and is doing a fantastic job for the Saints. The quarterback is surrounded by playmakers including Luke Frankfurt and Cameron James at running back and Connor Sykes and Kade Van Meter at wide receiver. One key for the Saints to repeat may be the defense. Braden Warner leads a solid group of players from his middle linebacker spot, while Kyle Lovelace and Evan Lashar are key components to the Saints getting back to the title game.

The road to Stillwater for Oklahoma athletes is one of determination, endurance and excellence. Home to the high school football state championship games, we are proud of our athletic history. Visit Stillwater also takes pride in serving you with excellence during your Stillwater stay. From our award-winning dining experiences, unique to Stillwater to our top-rated hotels, maintained to accommodate groups of any size, Visit Stillwater looks forward to meeting your needs with our legacy of excellence.

The top 100 high school football players in the state will compete for the annual title of Mr. Football Oklahoma prsented by Shleter Insurance. Here are the top 100 players from the Edmond area as they introduce themselves and represent their schools. Polls are open for the first round of online voting at VYPEOK.com

JUSTICE HANSEN

CAMERON WESTBROOK RB/S – 5-11, 180, SR. EDMOND SANTA FE WOLVES

Considered one of the top recruits in the state, Justice Hansen is probably headed to Oklahoma next fall. Everyone agrees Hansen has the tools to play at the next level. “I should be Mr. Football Oklahoma 2013 because I win and play hard,” said Hansen. Follow him on twitter @J_Hansen11.

An important part of the offensive scheme for the Wolves, Cameron Westbrook could benefit from other players getting most of the attention. Westbrook will hurt you if you’re not ready for him. “I work hard and give 100% at everything I do,” said Westbrook. Definitely one of the keys to success for Edmond Santa Fe this season.

QB – 6-4, 208, SR. EDMOND SANTA FE WOLVES

VYPE Factor – Hansen is a competitor. He has a great arm and isn’t afraid to tuck and run. Can’t miss on this one.

JAKE MAMMEN LB/FB – 6-0, 211, SR. EDMOND MEMORIAL BULLDOGS When you talk about a player you can count on, you talk about Jake Mammen. The linebacker is a rock on defense and makes plays at crucial moments in games. “I model good sportsmanship, I conduct myself well on and off the field and use football to better my character,” said Mammen. Follow him on twitter @ thejakemammen. VYPE Factor - Mammen plays with purpose whether he’s on offense or defense. He has looks from Ole Miss, Iowa State and North Texas.

MICHAEL FARMER RB/OLB – 6-2, 220, SR. EDMOND Santa Fe Wolves This man is on a mission after the way his season ended in 2012. Michael Farmer has recently transferred to Edmond Santa Fe and will be a massive asset for the Wolves. “I should only be Mr. Football Oklahoma if I am able to prove it on the field,” said Farmer, but he’s already impressed several college coaches. Follow him on twitter @ farmermike15.

VYPE Factor – Farmer has interest from Arizona State and a few other schools, but he’s focused on making his senior season a memorable one.

12

VYPEOK.COM

|

A U G U S T- S E P T E M B E R 2 0 1 3

VYPE Factor – If you ignore Westbrook he will grind out yards until he breaks one for six. A solid player with tremendous potential.

LANCE DIXON DE – 6-0, 190, SR. EDMOND NORTH HUSKIES

Lance Dixon’s stock is rising in the football ranks, all while being on the radar of every college wrestling coach. Dixon is quick and sheds offensive blocks with ease. “I’m a leader and that’s what it takes to be Mr. Football Oklahoma,” said Dixon. Look for Dixon to turn things up during his senior season. VYPE Factor – Lance Dixon is the definition of a competitor and he knows what it takes to win. Physically he’s tough to handle for anyone.

JOEL DIXON DL – 6-0, 205, SR. EDMOND NORTH HUSKIES Capable of playing anywhere on the line and possibly linebacker, Joel Dixon takes the pressure off the linebackers and forces teams to double him in the middle. The state champion wrestler doesn’t shy away from hand-to-hand combat in the trenches and uses his wrestling background to win those battles. VYPE Factor – Joel Dixon is one tough football player who enjoys mixing it up with slower offensive linemen. But chasing quaterbacks and stopping the run is his specialty.

ANDREW DIXON TE/DL – 6-0, 205, SR. EDMOND NORTH HUSKIES

CADEN SANDER QB/FS – 5-11, 170, SR. DEER CREEK ANTLERS

Having to face two Dixon brothers on the defensive line is bad enough, then you add Andrew Dixon and it becomes nearly impossible to stop all of them. Andrew, like his brothers, has all the tools to make it at the next level, but wrestling may put the brakes on football. Regardless, his focus is winning football games.

The two-way player for Deer Creek has the skill set to play in college, but what position may be in question. Regardless, Cade Sander is a proven winner in high school and will look to continue that trend this season. “My teammates are the ones who set me up to do good,” said Sander. Follow him on twitter @cadensander11.

VYPE Factor – Tough, quick, determined are a few words used to describe Andrew Dixon. Not too mention all three make a pretty good Olympic ribbon dance video.

WARREN WAND RB – 5-6, 165, JR. EDMOND MEMORIAL BULLDOGS

This agile running back is deceptively fast and for his size packs a heavy punch. Warren Wand or “magic wand” uses that low center of gravity to push through tacklers and gain those extra yards. “We don’t slack and I try to make sure of it,” said Wand. It’s that attitude Wand and his teammates will have to help them improve this season.

VYPE Factor – Ask opponents what makes Warren Wand so tough and they will tell you it’s his refusal to go down.

VYPE Factor – Sander brings the best out of his teammates and reveals in the role of leader and quarterback.

Will McKinnis QB – 6-1, 195, SR. OCS Saints McKinnis takes over quarterback duties at OCS. After playing multiple positions last year in helping the Saints win the 2A title, McKinnis will now fill in nicely for graduated Austin Brooks. Will brings a ton of athleticism and will make plays with his feet and his arm. VYPE Factor – Opponents will have a new test in trying to stop yet another great OCS quarterback Look for McKinnis to light it up.

The Complete List of the VYPE Top 100 Players Oklahoma SLADE NORDIC – BARTLESVILLE FRANKIE EDWARDS – Mustang JACE PITCHFORD – POTEAU LEXUS LEE – WESTMOORE ALEC ROBERTS – SAND SPRINGS TRISTAN HILL – MUSTANG JAYLON WATSON – BROKEN BOW LOUDEN JOHNSON – WAYNE COLEBY EVANS – UNION JACOB SPADY – HINTON AUSTIN CANTRELL – ROLAND TAYLOR TOWNSEND – FOX TRENTON BALL – CARL ALBERT KYLER FERGUSON – WOODWARD JORDAN QUINATA – MORRISON LOGAN PRICE – PUTNAM CITY NORTH JOSH DANNA – TIPTON Riley Hess - Alva Ty Hooper - Alva Landon Nault - Kingfisher Kyler Ferguson - Woodward TREY JOHNSON – HUGO JAKE MAMMEN – EDMOND MEMORIAL HOUSTON TYLER – SOUTHMOORE WILL MCKINNIS – OKLAHOMA CHRISTIAN DEREK REEVES – CLEVELAND JALON DANIELS – BLANCHARD KEATS CALHOON – VICTORY CHRISTIAN JUSTICE HANSEN - EDMOND SANTA FE KAI CALLINS – GUTHRIE CAMERON BATSON - MILLWOOD CADEN PRATT – MCALESTER JOSHUA WARIBOKO-ALALI – CASADY RJ SINK - ANADARKO

VYPE Trivia: What Bulldogs wide receiver was selected to play in the 2010 Oil Bowl? Give us your answer on Twitter: #EdmondBulldogs

Warren Wand OFFENSE

The Bulldogs look to carry over the emotion and success gained in the second half of 2012. After dropping five straight games to open the year, coach Justin Merideth’s “No Regrets” approach proved beneficial as the ‘Dogs won four of their last five to reach the Class 6A playoffs. The workhorse in the backfield in 2013 will be VYPE Top 100 selection Warren Wand (5-7, 165, Jr.), who totaled 1,812 yards and 15 touchdowns last season. “We’re going to get the ball in his hands,” said Merideth referring to the ‘Dogs talented back. The competition continues to determine who will be the starting quarterback as Luke Booker (6-3, 175, Sr.) and Mick Mayerske (6-0, 165, Jr.) bring athleticism to the position. Memorial’s passing game will feature a talented cast of receivers including Waylon Anderson (5-7, 180, Sr.), who grabbed 28 receptions last year, along with Jalon Smith (5-7, 150, Sr.), Oran Nicklas (6-0, 170, Sr.) and Donovan Nunley (6-1, 165, Jr.), who finished third in the state in the 100m hurdles. Size and strength is evident up front where three year regulars Mason Hall (5-10, 200, Sr.), Brett Reed (6-0, 275, Sr.), Jordan Weltzheimer (6-3, 275, Sr.) join Hayden Kaiiohelo (6-4, 235, Jr.). “We’ll be more of a balanced attack,” confirmed Merideth. “With the skill kids returning matched with our size upfront, the offense can be exciting to watch.” DEFENSE

Experience is just one way to describe the Bulldogs defense as eight starters return. “Defensively, we’ll be athletic,” admits Merideth. “Game time experience and depth up front will be an added plus.” A trio of linebackers that live for the opportunity to deliver the “big hit” on every snap return including VYPE Top 100 selection Jake Mammen (6-0, 210, Sr.), who totaled 60 tackles in 2012, Jason Hand (6-1, 195, Jr.), who topped the tackle charts last season with 87 stops and Charlie Dutton (6-3, 215, Sr.). “These guys make us go,” Merideth said. “Their emotion carries over to everyone else.” Depth and experience abounds in the defensive front where Memorial will rotate eight players with size and quickness including nose guard Jacob Jordan (5-11, 205, Sr.), Kourtney Williams (6-0, 210, Jr.), Trayvon Gamble (6-4, 215, Sr.), Kolt VanMeter (6-1, 215, Sr.), Bennett Stone (6-2, 250, Jr.), Chase Kemp (6-1, 230, Jr.) and LaManuel Singleton (6-3, 225, Jr.). Tasden Ingram (6-2, 160, Sr.), who charted 48 tackles last season, will be joined in the secondary by Robert Charlton (5-9, 155, So.), who finished third in Class 6A in the 100m dash, along Ashton Antwine (6-0,190, Sr.), Colin Simpson (5-11, 165, Jr.), Ben Moore (5-10, 200, Sr.) and James Hutchinson (5-10, 175, ,Sr.). “We started six sophomores last year along with three others that had limited experience,” said Merideth. “They’re all back a year ago and ready to go. VYPE Discussion: What is the name of the Deer Creek Antler mascot? Find answer on Twitter: #DCAntlers OFFENSE

The Antlers ran the table in District 5A-4, beating 2012 state champion Carl Albert in the regular season. The team reached the quarterfinals before losing to McAlester. Edmond Deer Creek will be led in 2013 by VYPE Top 100 player Caden Sander. “He’s started at free safety since he was a sophomore,” coach Grant Gower said. “He’s been our back-up the past few years. There’s no question he can get it done at quarterback. He’s proven that in 7-on-7 and spring drills.”

Alec James

He replaces Josh Blumenthal, who threw for 2,456 yards and 32 touchdowns. “One of Caden’s great attributes is his leadership ability,” Gower added. “Our players gravitate to him. He’s a great character young man. He was a defensive leader last year as a junior.” Running back Alec James (6-1, 210, Sr.), who rushed for 297 yards, a 6.1 rushing average. “Alec is extremely strong, very powerful and he has great speed,” Gower said. “He can catch the ball out the backfield. He made a catch against Guthrie last year that was just unbelievable.” Marcus Coleman (5-11, 175, Sr.) also will see action in the backfield alongside James at running back. “Marcus can step in and fill a great playmaking role for us,” Gower said. Cole Verble (6-0, 175, Sr.) moves into

the primary receiver role with James taking over the running back chores. “We lost 27 seniors, you don’t go replace that but we are at a point now where we develop at a young age.”

Clay Jarzombek (6-0, 215, Sr.) will be the centerpiece of the offensive line at center. “We lost a lot of seniors upfront,” Gower said. “He’s very intelligent, a 31 ACT guy. He will make our line calls.” Others who will contribute Tanner Fialkowski (5-11, 220, Jr.), Colton Hodge (6-0, 225, Jr.), Andrew Ousley (6-1, 214, Sr.), Ryan Donnohue (6-3, 215, Sr.), Justin Graham (6-4, 320, Jr.) and Skyler Dehne (6-4, 305, So.). “I feel good with these guys we will plug in,” Gower said. DEFENSE

Sander joins a handful of quarterbacks who will play defense this season. A free safety a year ago, Sander hauled in seven interceptions. Also back in the secondary is Jackson Smith (6-0, 175, Sr.) at cornerback where he registered five interceptions. “Jackson is a hard worker,” Gower said. Eli Hooks (6-2, 195, Sr.) is a man-child at defensive end. Last season he had 138 tackles and 18 sacks. “Eli is getting a lot of looks,” Gower said. “He’s a wrestler and he wrestled at 180 last year. He’s trying to get his weight up. He has a great frame. He is so quick off the ball. Obviously that’s where his sacks come from. With him being a wrestler, once he gets his hands on you, you are going down.” Opponents will find Hooks a tough player to guard. Coach Gower returns a pair of dandies at linebacker in James, who is the leading tackler back with 124. Kidd added 60 tackles. ”We’ve got some holes to fill but I feel confident we have guys to fill those holes,” Gower said. “We are excited about the 2013 season. We have some excellent returning players and some outstanding players that will get their opportunity this year and step into some key roles. Playing in one of the toughest districts in Class 5A, if not all classes, brings a challenge as we seek to defend the 2012 district championship.”

Edmond schools are synonymous with success in high school volleyball. Four Edmond high schools – Memorial, North and Santa Fe of the Edmond district and Deer Creek – reached the Class 6A state volleyball tournament in 2012 with Memorial advancing to the finals before losing to Bishop Kelley. Here is a brief look at the four teams heading into the 2013 season. Bulldogs Reload Around Talented Junior Class

Coach Natalie Murray returns four starters – all juniors – from last year’s state runner-up squad as they look to continue the success of 2012. Cassidy Hackett is coming off a sophomore season in which she recorded 430 assists as the team’s floor general. Libero Kelsi Hughes registered 347 digs last season and is the team’s last line of defense. Jenny Roy and Olivia Schiffner combined for more than 160 blocks a year ago. Look for the junior duo to give the Bulldogs a strong defensive presence at middle blocker. Edmond Memorial reached the 6A title match in 2012 after dispatching Union in three sets and rallying after being down one set to Edmond North in the semis. Edmond Memorial won the final three sets over its crosstown rival to set up the championship match with Bishop Kelley.

year head coach Kimo Aweau looks to have another strong showing this season. Libero Rachel Manriquez returns after recording 323 digs and 52 aces in 2012. Setter Alissa Benson led the team in assists. Kate Becker, a senior outside hitter, recorded 200 kills in addition to 199 digs and 42 aces. “Rachel is one of the premier defensive players in the state,” Aweau said. “Kate is our offensive leader and Alissa is our quarterback on the court.”

Also back is sophomore Hannah Rose Frohling , who brings a strong presence on the court, Aweau said. Holly Randall returns to play the middle position. Middle/right hitter Chanelle McCormick and utility Ashley McCoy – both seniors – are capable of playing a variety of positions on the court.

“Holly didn’t get a lot of varsity time last year but we expect her to make a big impact in the middle both offensively and defensively,” Aweau said. “Chanelle had a bunch of kills last season playing behind all-stater Allison Barr. We expect big things from Chanelle. “Our expectations are high. We expect to have a lot of fun this season. All our seniors are excellent leaders. With our experience, intelligence and athleticism I expect us to have a very good year.”

Santa Fe Boasts Solid Junior Nucleus in 2013 Setter Kaleo Kanahele, a senior, had 434 assists, 147 digs and 34 aces last year in leading the Wolves to a quarterfinal state appearance. Jordan Spence, a junior middle hitter, led Santa Fe in kills with 360. She also boasted a .370 hitting percentage, 94 blocks, 27 service aces and a 94.4 serve percentage. Baleigh Murphy, another junior, is coming off a sophomore season in which she recorded 635 assists and 72 aces. Erika Warren, a senior outside hitter, added 261 kills and 39 blocks a year ago. Kanahele, a member of Team USA volleyball, is expected to rejoin the Wolves soon, Santa Fe coach Will Ethridge said.

“Erica hits the ball really hard,” the coach said. “Last year she was forced to play left side, but the right side is where she has more experience. She should have a really good year.

Edmond North Opponents won’t be able to camp on her.”

Santa Fe added Taylor Horton, a setter, as a move-in from Norman High School. She could see action early along with Murphy at the setter spot with the absence of Kanahele. Samantha Ethridge, daughter of the coach, will see action at libero. Aerial Jackson, a 5-foot-11 sophomore, gives the Wolves a strong outside presence at left hitter. “She’s a high flying kid,” coach Ethridge said. “She has some potential. She’s playing a little out of position, she has more experience at middle hitter. She plays for Oklahoma Peak Performance, one of the best AAU teams in the nation. New Coach, New Facilities Have Antlers Ready for 2013

Deer Creek has a new coach in Lisa Polcovich and are about to move into a new facility. Polcovich, a former University of Florida volleyball player, takes over a program that just missed the state tournament in 2012. Seniors Taylor Turner, Caitlyn Prather, Jessie Heiden, Josie Vineyard and Madi Kitchens have stepped into a leadership role. Turner, a setter/right side hitter, is the team captain. Prather and Heider, are outside hitters and co-captains. Vinyard is the team’s defensive specialist and Kitchens is a back-up setter. “Turner is definitely the cohesive glue for our squad,” Polcovich said. “Caitlyn is a great defensive passer, Jessie is a very smart, finesse player. Morgan Turner, a sophomore and younger sister of Taylor, is a rising star at setter in the sport.

“We are good fundamentally,” Polcovich said. “We are quick and very athletic. I definitely see this team competing for a state title. The staff has worked with the girls on agility, speed, weight room and two-a-days. “The seniors are really excited about getting into the gym (mid-September date). The facility is truly phenomenal. “She is our do it all player who is great on both offense and defense. We are expecting really big things out of her,” Lawson said.

Helping the Lady Antlers reach those goals are a trio of seniors comprised of pitcher Emily Watson, shortstop Kelsi Williams and centerfielder Jordan Williams.

Junior third baseman Bailey Thompson and junior catcher Kennedy Turner will also play key roles this year as will freshman pitchers Tori Ritz and Molly Mabry. Looking at the schedule Regier said she is looking forward to one opponent in particular. “I’m really looking forward to playing Piedmont. They are our rivals but also they moved up to 5A this year and are in our district so there is some added pressure there to beat them both times we play each other,” Regier
