Let us know what we’re doing right or what we need to do better. We love to hear from readers. Or if you have an event, a team or an athlete we need to cover, give us the heads-up. Send your comments to brad.heath@vype.com. —Brad Heath, Editor

Crossed Up VYPE needs to come up with a cross country/ track ranking system. I think knowing who the top long distance runners are and knowing who the top track athletes are would be very helpful to coaches, athletes and fans. Think about, it’s never been done and you guys are known for being innovators.

Craig D. Tulsa

Backyard Bust When will the hype behind the Jenks vs. Union game end? I mean look at the games from the last couple of years. Both teams have realized this is just a meaningless game for them. It’s not like it was several years ago. Maybe you should consider doing something other than a Jenks vs. Union cover and do something on Oologah vs. Claremore or Coweta vs. Wagoner. The mystique is gone, time to move on.

Jerry S. Owasso

Editor’s Note: Thanks Craig. Well it sounds like a task that might be better suited for OKrankings.com, but you know us, we may just decide to jump in with both feet and give it a shot. Thanks for the email.

VYPE & iHigh How exactly do schools get their own page with VYPE and iHigh? I noticed certain schools have pages, but others are just part of your VYPE site. Any information you can give is greatly appreciated.

Kris L. McAlester

Editor’s Note: It’s as east as logging on to the school page and registering. But 6

if you’re looking to live stream some games and provide some content for the school, then you should email me at brad. heath@vype.com and I’ll help you through the process. It’s simple, and free for the schools to use. Just look at what some of the schools that have pages are doing. It’s a game changer.

Hot Topic Will VYPE be covering the hot topic of transfers? With the recent transfer from Sapulpa and the ruling, I think the OSSAA is finally growing a backbone.

Paul W. Tulsa

Editor’s Note: Thanks Paul. You know we’ve covered this issue many times on many different media outlets. Our opinion is let the process take care of these situations. The OSSAA understands this process and we trust they can make decisions that are fair and unbiased. As for parents and players, our stance is don’t say anything in public that you wouldn’t say to their face. These things usually work out in the end.

Texas Football Texas football doesn’t have anything on Oklahoma! Broken Arrow kicked Odessa out of the stadium and claimed it for Oklahoma. Look out 6A the Tigers are coming! Michael M. Broken Arrow

l o c k e r ta l k Lily Swab is a senior captain for the Holland Hall field hockey team. She has had a great start to the season scoring both her team’s goals in a tournament in St. Louis and had three goals the following weekend. According to her coach she is a great team leader, giving 100 percent in all she does on and off the field. She has a positive attitude and motivates her teammates. She has played field hockey for four years and is the Center Forward this season. With the busy fall upon us, VYPE decided they better track down Lily Swab before SPC games started or we may never catch her. After asking a series of questions to Lily, we hit up Lily’s Mom, Maricarolyn Swab and tracked down her field hockey coach, Leah Scott and asked them the same questions. We compared answers to see who knows Lily best? Read on the find out.

Commandos Cross Country On Track

In early competition the Commandos cross country team has performed very well, and as the season presses forward their times are falling. Senior Steven Ory has led the way for the boys. Ory has two 2nd place finishes this season. The first came at the Lincoln Christian meet then six days later at the Metro Christian meet. On September 9th Ory placed 4th at the Tulsa Edison meet. Sophomore Alex Torkleson recorded a 1st place finish in the sophomore division at the Lincoln Christian meet in August. Torkleson ran the 2-mile race with a time of 12:43.55. For the girls seniors Caytlin Nichols and Catherine Pringle finished third and fourth at the Lincoln Christian meet in the girls 1-mile race. Overall the team is improving and should perform very well at Holland Hall and Owasso. Regionals are set for October 22nd with the state tournament planned for the 29th of October at Mitch Park in Edmond.

Basketball Classifications

The OSSAA released the classifications for the 2011-12 basketball season and the Cascia Hall Commandos will compete in Class 4A. Other local schools in Class 4A include Berryhill, Glenpool, Ft. Gibson, Claremore Sequoyah, Oologah, Wagoner, Webster, McLain, Sallisaw, Catoosa and Inola.

Volleyball Ready for Tourney

The Lady Commandos are off to a great season and looking forward to finishing the month of September strong as they head into regional play. With big tournaments at Jenks (Sept. 16-17) and Bishop Kelley (Sept. 24), the Lady Commandos have their work cut out for them, but they know this will only help them prepare for the state tournament. The state tournament is set for October 7-8th at Shawnee High School.

Blue Swarm Looks Strong

The Commandos Blue Swarm defense is known for keeping opponents out of the endzone and forcing turnovers. The Blue Swarm has only given up 14 points in their first two games and a lot of that has been without University of Tulsa commit Conner Sherwood. Sherwood has nursed an ankle injury, but is expected to be at 100 percent soon. Look for the defense that features several playmakers to be a big reason the Commandos have an Bryce Carterfor and Parker title ANeal opportunity to compete a district and possibly make a run in the state playoffs.

Cross Country

The boys and girls cross country teams competed at the TU Hurricane Festival September 3rd. The athletes competed by age group as the boys ran a two mile and the girls ran a 1 mile race. Senior Mitch Hill led the boys with a time of 11:32 and an 11th place finish for seniors. Junior Nathan Stewart finished in 11:59 for an 8th place finish in his division. Sophomore Daniel Cruickshank finished 6th with a time of 11:46, followed by Aaron Bickert at 11:56 and an 11th place finish in their division. The girls cross country team was led by Freshman Allene Michaels who finished the mile in 5:42 and a second place finish. Senior Cindy Saliba ran a personal best, 5:57 and finished fifth in her age group, followed by senior Beth Cruickshank who finished 11th with a time of 6:32. Junior Maggie Johnson finished 11th with a time of 6:38.

Field hockey

The field hockey team finished 1-1-1 at the St. Louis Gateway Classic over Labor Day Weekend. The Dutch fell in their opener to Lakes Community, IL 2-0. In the second game, the Dutch battled back for a 2-0 win over Clayton, MO. Senior Lily Swab scored both goals for the Dutch. In the final game on Sunday, the Dutch tied Rosati Kain, MO 0-0. Both the JV and Varsity will be competing in six matches against various SPC and other Texas schools.

Volleyball

The volleyball team lost a heart breaker to #1 3A Cascia Hall last Thursday. The Dutch played some of their best volleyball in the first two games and took a 2-0 lead. The Commandos came back to take games 3 and 4 and squeezed out a win in game 5, 15-13. It was an exciting match and some tremendous play by both teams. Outsider hitters senior Ashlyn Terrell and freshman Anna Bezhan hit some nice kills shots, set up by junior setter Erika Celoni. In the middle, seniors Claire Hicks and Sophie Jefferson had some outstanding blocks and nice hits to control the middle and junior libero, Jaime Rice, held strong in the back. Sophomores Natalie Warren and Kelsey Arnold continue to come on strong for the Dutch and played their best match of the year. This is definitely a team to follow over the next several weeks as they prepare themselves for SPC.

Cascia Hall Cascia Hall is ready to get back to the appex of Class 3A. After winning back-to-back state titles in 3A in 2008 and 2009, the Commandos have Rocco Driscoll, Phillip Choquette, and Jake Stump to help lead them in 2011. Couple those seniors with Thomas Rousch, Conner Sherwood, and Patrick Bass and the Commandos are already hitting their stride. “We have a good group of young men,” said coach Joe Medina. “It is really good to watch our team develop in all phases of the game. Lincoln

F E AT U R E

The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs have made it a habit of developing a winning season and they are looking good once again in 2011. After taking their lumps with a young team last year, the Bulldogs are now primed and ready to go.

Zack Simmons leads the way at running back and will be the workhorse all season for Lincoln. Hudson Baab is a monster up front and creates a paramount problem for opposing teams. “We have continued to develop and our boys are doing a nice job,” said coach Darren Melton. “The kids work extremely hard and they have the experience and the ability to continue to develop and make a run,”

Lincoln faces a tough Class 2A road to win the state title. It will take 15 games, but the Bulldogs have been there before and will be one of the favorites in 2A.

A verse that means a lot to Alex right now is Psalm 139: 23-24 because of the intimacy with God that David is showing in the psalm and Alex loves the intimacy growing each day with God and his drive to be closer and to look more like the Christ we serve. “Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts. Brawl at the Backyard Bowl The Eighth Annual Backyard Bowl By Austin Chadwick Photos by Rip Stell Another classic was anticipated and for the first three quarters of the MidFirst Backyard Bowl, that is what we got. Then Union broke the game open with opportunistic defense and effecient offense. It was business as usual for the three-time defending state champions as Union cruised to the 41-19 win. The score in the second quarter was 20-13 after two scores by Kendall Holmes and one by quarterback Hunter Atyia for Union and an 85-yard gallop by Alex Ross and another score by Treyvonne Barr’e for the Trojans. At that time, Jenks was driving down for a another score to tie the game with under a minute left and on the goalline, Kyle Alexander threw an interception that was returned 100 yards by Union stalwart linebacker Kyle Cretchmer. The Redskins took the 14-point lead in at halftime and never looked back.

“This was a game that we have always looked forward to,” said Union Linebacker Blace Walser. “We got big plays and that is what typically happens in this game. Sure there are always the guys people know who are the stars, but it is the guys people may not know about yet who become the

heroes in this rivalry.” Over the last 15 years, the two south-Tulsa juggernauts have dictated the Class 6A title, but after squaring off eleven of those 15 years against each other, only twice has a team swept the regular season and the championship game in the same year. Union once and Jenks once. Jenks played with Ross in a limited role after an ankle injuriy and the Skins took advantage. Both teams will be improving throughout the season and Jenks will have to look to find a solidified quarterback after an injury Alexander. The junior may be back, but will have to continue and develop. Rest assured that both teams are still the heavy favorites in 6A, but with the emergence of cross-town rivals Broken Arrow, this might be the year that Jenks and Union are tested by a new contender in Broken Arrow.

The Lady Rams have girls that can play and coach Christie is getting as much out of them as possible. “We have 10 players on the team with five of them being freshman. All five freshman start (when healthy). Madeline Drake, (5-11, MB/OH, Frosh), has already received athletic questionnaires from LSU, Duke, Auburn, and Nebraska. When she is on her game, we are hard to beat,” Christie continues, “Our other freshman who contribute greatly to our team’s success are Kate Hillsman (OH), Sarah Minnich (MB), Alison Ramsey (MB), and Paige Panter (S). Our freshman girls have been playing together since fifth grade, which was also

the first year of our volleyball program. I think this core group of players has the potential to win multiple state titles over the next four years,” said Christie. The competition this season is tougher than in years past and the girls have fought through some injuries. Coach Christie feels like the adversity has made them better and has prepared them for the future. “I made a tough schedule this year in order to challenge our team, but it became tougher because we have not had our whole team for many of the matches (ex. Madeline Drake has been out for the last weeks with an ankle injury). When our team was at full strength, we played great and won our first tournament of the year, which was the Bartlesville 4A Volleyball Invitational with wins over Clinton and Copan in

bracket play. This past weekend (without Madeline) we finished second in the Cleveland High School Invitational,” said Christie. Construction on a new home gym is near completion and the Regent faithful will be more than impressed with the facility. It’s truly one of the top gymnasiums in Eastern Oklahoma. “Our gym is coming along nicely and the first phase should be finished right after Thanksgiving. Our team is excited that starting next year we will be able to practice and play in our own gym,” said Christie. Finding leaders to break in the new gym is more difficult than expected, so coach Christie took an unusual approach to it this season. “I decided not to name captains this year because I wanted all 10 of our girls to be leaders and they have done just that. I am really proud of the way they have stuck together during this tough season. One girl in particular that has stepped up her leadership this season is Maddie Shapleigh, junior. She has always been a quiet person on the court but this year she is being more vocal and encouraging her teammates when our team is faced with

adversity,” said Christie. As the athletic director Mr. Christie is involved in much more than just the volleyball team. Acceptance into the OSSAA is a priority as well as bringing the other sports up to par. “I believe we are set in the sports we would like to offer, which are football, volleyball, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, and soccer. The other two we may consider down the road are golf and cross country. Once the school finishes the accreditation process through the Association of Classical and Christian Schools, we would like to apply to join the OSSAA. We are hoping to join for the 2012-13 school year or 2013-14,” explained Christie. Expectations are being meet both on and off the court for the Lady Rams. “Considering we have not been playing with our whole team throughout the year, I am very pleased with our results. We continue to battle through adversity, which will only help us come playoff time when hopefully our whole team is present and healthy. Our goal is to win another state championship and believe we are on the right road,” said Christie. Any team in any sport requires people behind the scenes. Regent is no different and the volunteers are a big reason this squad is always prepared. “Our parents are a big help when it comes to transportation, reserving gym space for practices, and assisting with our matches when we host. We are blessed at Regent to have such a great group of families who are very encouraging and supportive,” said Christie. Health C

onditioning during the season occurs in many ways. Some old school methods still work, but the fact remains that we live in the twentyfirst century and times have changed, athletes have changed, and as our work habits and endurance levels rise, an adjustment on the conditioning aspect of training also needs to change. Athletes developed off-season speed through their spring and summer workouts. How will it hold up during the season’s demands? Athletes will not endure the same speed and efficiency as they did in the off- season in shirts and shorts and no physical contact. This is why a great sprinter doesn’t necessarily make a good football player. The demands of football and the physical attributes of a season do not coincide with that of a sprinter’s workout. Football requires mental toughness, absorbing bruises, and battling pain constantly. If a sprinter absorbed that kind of abuse, he wouldn’t be very fast. In the off- season, athletes performed speed work with high intensity and longer rest periods. During a football practice, muscle contraction dulls because of workload and fatigue; in addition, the nervous system is not being utilized properly, so the mind and nervous system receive subpar input. The transition from off- season and summer to football season has to be made through the end of an athlete’s summer workouts to get into an in-season conditioning mode. Conditioning during the football season is crucial in determining the overall physical

46

VYPEOK.COM

|

MEAPRTCEHM 2B 0E 1R1 2 0 1 1 S

and mental fitness of a team. Improper conditioning can cause a number of problems: fatigue, over-training, loss of focus, and training in the wrong energy systems, but more importantly it can promote an environment that will not allow athletes to reach their full potential. When done properly, in-season conditioning can change the physical and mental abilities of athletes throughout this time of year. Conditioning occurs all the time: during practice, in the weight room, during games, and even when the athlete is at home. Because players juggle so many physical and mental tasks, it is essential that the in-season conditioning program be well thought out. When designing a conditioning program, the coach must remember that the efforts of playing football, practicing, and weight training must be factored into the overall plan! I would suggest that all conditioning occur before practices for quality and aerobic development, plus this promotes a great practice environment as athletes focus on the task at hand and not how much running they will be doing when practice is over. The in-season conditioning program should address the needs of athletes by providing exercises, drills, and movements that are specific with respect to work-torest intervals. As football season begins, athletes should be in very good shape from the pre-season training they have completed. The purpose of in-season conditioning is to maintain fitness levels and, if done correctly, continue to enhance

a player’s attributes. These attributes include:
