2011-2012 A Year to Remember
2010-2011 Collector’s Edition What a year in high school sports and for graduating seniors in the Class of 2011. VYPE has combined Eastern Oklahoma and Central Oklahoma in one jumbo-sized year-end wrap up. Take a look back at each month for some of the highlights that helped to make 2010-11 one of the greatest years in high school athletics.
Congratulations are in order for all those who competed at such a high level this year in Oklahoma. Statewide, 2012 was an unforgettable year. To pay tribute, we give our readers the June Year-End Special Issue. You will see more photos in this magazine than ever before. Capturing moments is what we do and all of our VYPE Oklahoma photographers were fantastic in getting the best photos throughout the year.
We go through a month-by-month breakdown of the 2011-2012 school year and all the accomplishments and highlights that came with it. Every single sport is covered and we are excited to publish some of the best photos of the year as well as some photos that have yet to be published. Thank you to all the coaches, athletes, parents, and communities for giving us so much. We wish all the 2012 seniors the best of luck in all their endeavors and we look forward to seeing the underclassmen return for an even better 2012-2013 year.
Also, if there is ever anything that needs to be brought to our attention or anything that our readers disagree or agree with, we want your feedback. You can reach me personally at Austin. Chadwick@VYPE.com Austin Chadwick

The Last of the First
Southmoore Baseball Passes the Torch
By Steve Marshall
For some of the seniors on the Southmoore baseball team it will feel like they will truly be passing the torch. They will always be known as “The Last of the first.” Southmoore High School opened in 2008. So without many upperclassmen to count on, it was going to be up to some of the youngsters to grow up quickly . A great opportunity for some valuable varsity action immediately as a freshman, with some of the bumps in the road expected with a group so young.
Center fielder and pitcher Stephen Stacy remembers a Spring-Break road trip as a Freshman. “We took a trip over spring break to Alabama the first year (pause) and it’s were we got our first win actually, but we had a real cool time,” he said. “I wish we could’ve gone back.” The Sabercats were ranked in the Top Ten at time throughout the season and
took second place at the Gladys Winter’s Tournament in Enid, losing to eventual State Champion Edmond North in the finals. “We had a lot of experience from the very beginning of the program, so a lot of us have seen more Varsity playing time than players from most schools,” said outfielder Jacob Lyles. “It’s helped us to mature not only as players but as men. We’re more ready for competition in the future and hopefully us seniors have laid the groundwork..”
Hunter Guarnera was the Sabercats first-baseman: “It’s special because it’s a group of ten guys who have been together all four years and we had literally no experience coming in, we’ve had to build this program from the ground up to get it where it is today. It was a very successful senior season though it ended just one game short of making it to the state tournament as they were ousted in the regional final, once again by Edmond North and finished 27-11.

Finding Your Passion in College What course of study one chooses in college may end up changing the lives of others, even sooner than one might have imagined. Consider the story of Bailee Russell, a Rose State College biological sciences student, who connected her studies and her passion to help diagnose a medical condition in her friend.
The college recently recognized Bailee as the Outstanding Honors Graduate for the work on diagnosing “Bicuspid Aortic Valve Disease,” or BAVD, in her friend. Bailee undertook a science project for a life science class at Rose State in which she measured electrocardiogram readings and discovered the signs of the disease in her friend. “I’m getting married on Saturday. She’s my junior bridesmaid,” Bailee said in the recent interview. “I took a normal EKG (electrocardiogram) and compared it to hers. She has biphasic T-waves— electric problems in her heart. Because she’s able to live with it, we’re just making people aware of this particular disease. They don’t like to diagnose young children, but she was showing a lot of symptoms. Most people who have this defect, they don’t catch it until later on in life.”
The Rose State College Foundation presented Bailee with a plaque and a $250 check for her work. The Foundation supports Rose State College students with stipends or awards to support the students’ educational endeavors. Bailee also received the Outstanding Honors Graduate Award and $500 for outstanding work during her entire Rose State College honors career. “This recognizes the honors graduate who most consistently throughout his or her tenure does
extraordinary work and who we feel represents the program well,” said Rose State honors program director Toni Castillo. Rose State life sciences professor Amy Hurst, who worked with Bailee during her time as a student, said the human element in the project attracted the attention of the faculty. She noted Bailee’s outspoken desire to work in the medical field. “This is about a person who will be affected her entire life. I think when you work with people, and there’s a human impact, it elevates the subject,” said Hurst. “This is the kind of thing an honors project should do to prepare you. Bailee is going to be doing this with patients, and determining if a patient has this disorder or another one.” Bailee said she plans to continue her pursuit of a career in life sciences, perhaps in the medical field as a physician’s assistant. “I love the medical field. I love Rose State. I really love my professors, who brought out my love for science,” Bailee said.
Students entering college may not always know what will excite them the most and stir their passion, as is the case with Bailee and the medical profession. So as students enter college they should make finding that passion a priority, and soliciting the assistance of campus counselors, professors, and advisors on that introspective journey. Pursuing your dreams and interests can lead to exciting discoveries, and who knows, perhaps helping others in the process.

The Carl Albert girls fast pitch softball team got things started with their gold ball win in Class 5A. Blanchard and Little Axe followed their lead with titles of their own in 4A and 3A. The Guthrie Bluejays brought home a state title in football despite facing some tough odds. Basketball season witnessed a dominating performance by the Douglass Trojans, while Bishop McGuinness rallied to win a title in Class 5A. The girls would not be left out of the celebration as Edmond Santa Fe and Shawnee claimed victories for their schools. The Westmoore Lady Jags added another trophy to the case as they defeated Union to win a slow pitch softball crown. On the diamond Edmond North became the first west side school to win a Class 6A crown since 1995. Carl Albert claimed the 5A title marking their third in six years. In soccer the Norman North boys played up to their potential and won Class 6A, while Deer Creek and Mount St. Mary also claimed gold. For the girls, Northwest notched a victory in the finals giving them the title, their first in school history. Tennis, swimming, cross-country, wrestling, golf, track and cheer had their share of winners as well. It was a season to remember for many teams and players on many levels.

The Lady Redskins got things started for Union when they won the Class 6A girls fast pitch title. That set the tone for Union to make a run at several gold balls this season. The Redskin football team made it four-in-a-row defeating Broken Arrow in the finals. In the gym the Redskin boys basketball team took it coast-tocoast going undefeated and winning yet another state title. As if the trophy case wasn’t full enough the boys swim team at Union brought home another title, the wrestling team won a dual state title, the cheer squad won the 6A title at OSU and the girls golf team capped off a great year for with a title of their own. It was an east side sweep in volleyball as Bishop Kelley won their fifth in a row, Cascia Hall claimed the 5A title and Lincoln Christian won 4A. The Bixby boys swim team won another title for the Spartans in Class 5A. Despite the jump in class the Lady Comets of Bishop Kelley won the Class 6A title in soccer and the Lady Cards of Verdigris won their fourth title in as many years. The Broken Arrow Tigers and the Claremore Zebras came close to winning baseball crowns, but came up a little short. Overall it was a great year to be an east side school.

Congratulations to TJ Eckert FCA Athlete of the Year Bixby High School
On May 22nd, VYPE and Oklahoma Wesleyan invited the FCA and the recipients of the OKWU FCA Athlete of the Month awards to Tulsa Oklahoma for the inaugural CLAY Awards.
The CLAY Awards were established to honor High Schools students who seek to impact their world for Jesus Christ through the influence of athletics. The title was taken from the scripture Isaiah 64:8, “We are the clay, you are the potter; we are all the work of your hand.”
The CLAY Awards recognized 16 youth from around Oklahoma who are being molded by God and who outwardly place Christ first through sports, teamwork, leadership and community. For the past year Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) from the Oklahoma City and Tulsa regions have been selected for the FCA Athlete of the Month sponsored by Oklahoma Wesleyan University and VYPE High School Sports Magazine.
The winners gathered with family for a luncheon at the Wyndham Hotel, Tulsa to be recognized for this achievement. In addition, they were all in the running for one of 5 yearly awards: the Leadership Award; Community Award; FCA Choice Award; Running the Race Award; and the CLAY Award for Athlete of the Year with the winner receiving a $5,000.00 scholarship to Oklahoma Wesleyan University.
