Melanie Colt wears more hats in a day than most people could in a week. As Treasurer and Activity Chairman, she keeps score books, bank books, cooks, works the concession stand and sells and takes orders for the team’s uniforms. Her husband, Jason, regularly volunteers his time at the ball field, constantly announcing, cooking and doing whatever needs to be done. Their two sons, Austen and Bryce, have learned the value of hard work from their parents. Former Owasso standout baseball player, Austen Colt, won three championships playing for the Rams. He is currently in his second year at Neosho County Community College in Kansas and recently signed to play with ORU for his last two years. Bryce Colt is currently an Owasso Ram destined for great things as well. When Melanie isn’t cheering for her kids on the field, she organizes the annual golf tournament at Bailey Ranch, a major fundraiser for the Owasso Rams baseball team. Without her support and dedication, Coach Larry Turner and his team wouldn’t have all the things they need to make each season spectacular. We salute you, Melanie Colt, for your tireless efforts to keep Owasso baseball and your kids #1. We know we can’t begin to compete with a Mom’s priceless gifts. $10 million renovations highlight Oral Roberts University campus this summer
O
ral Roberts University staff works diligently during the summer on campus renovations and maintenance projects while students out for the summer impact nations around the world. “With a 40-year-old university, it’s important to maintain a living and learning environment in order to stay competitive in the market,” said Tim Philley, ORU executive vice president and chief operations officer. “In the long-term, you have make sure the infrastructure is kept up to standards step-by-step. If the infrastructure is not maintained, it eventually impacts everyone financially.” Oral Roberts University received a commitment for $10 million in December 2010 from the Green family of Oklahoma City to be used for campus renovations and deferred maintenance projects in 2011. Philley said $6.1 million is designated for building renovations such as new furniture, hot water tanks, air conditioning units, carpeting and bathrooms. Demolition is scheduled for an unused dormitory, a new basketball floor is to be installed at the Mabee Center, and the volleyball floor will be resurfaced at the Aerobics Center. Chemistry and engineering labs are also being renovated, Philley said. The most exciting part of the renovations, however, is the $3.88 million project that the information technology department is spearheading. Mark Bender, ORU chief information officer, said project highlights include providing cell phone amplification, installing wireless clocks in classrooms and commons areas, virtual computing desktops, extending the wireless footprint across the campus, enabling distributed education, replacing the voice phone system and updating television equipment to digital technology. “It is our goal to implement these initiatives in order to have virtually no connectivity issues with students who are either in the classroom or just walking from building to building on campus,” Bender said. “They will have the resources they will need 24/7. Flexibility is important. For example, making the campus completely wireless would provide a more robust connection in the classroom to support advanced

devices such as the iPad.” These initiatives, such as using virtual desktops versus replacing complete desktop systems, will save the university approximately $1.2 to $1.3 million each year.” One important aspect for ORU is the implementation of distributed education, in which Apple and Desire2Learn type technology will enable the use of digital content for faculty to use in the classroom, as well as remote locations around the world to create a local and “virtual” ORU. In terms of staying competitive academically, Bender said the biggest project is the overhaul of the Learning Resource Center television studio. “We will be converting analog equipment to high definition equipment to provide the best training for our students,” Bender said. “The LRC studio will match the caliber of equipment that students have used at television stations.” Bender said future plans also include an ORU app for the iPad, iPhone and Android phones in which users can download and access information such as financial aid, bill paying, campus maps, dining services, Eagle Card Center, The Oracle RSS feed, the Tulsa city guide and to submit reports to Security, Dean of Men and other campus departments as needed. Tulsa NOAH Jaguar Baseball Builds Foundation for Success we must play the best which includes playing teams like Sand Springs, Mannford, Pryor and Metro Christian to name few local teams. ”
T
ulsa NOAH Baseball fielded a fifth grade baseball team in the spring of 2003. This fifth grade team didn’t give up even though it won just one game, its last game of the season. Today, NOAH baseball has grown to field ten teams from first grade through high school varsity. There are 110 plus athletes and over 35 volunteer coaches. Along with its growth, NOAH’s competitiveness has continued to improve as well. “Our goal is to compete for local, state and national championships at every level. Our model for success begins with the elementary teams focusing on teaching baseball fundamentals with an emphasis of using baseball to give glory to GOD through the gift of sports”, says Athletic Director, Darron Replogle. “The program has come along ways from winning one game in 2003 to winning over 100 games a season since 2008. That’s a tribute to the dedication and commitment of the families to want to improve as a player.”
Senior All-American shortstop Jeb Penrod says “I’ve also come to realize that baseball is a gift given from God and that God deserves the praise for allowing me to play this wonderful sport! I am so thankful for NOAH giving me the opportunity to play on a Christian team which is also very competitive.” Penrod has received interest from colleges and expects to be playing college ball next season. NOAH baseball is providing an opportunity for players to develop their skills to play beyond the high school level. Other players in recent years have continued playing ball beyond their high school careers. Players like Sam Brownwood (College of the Ozarks), Parker McDaniel (Kansas City Community College) and Andrew Smith (Coffeyville Community College) received scholarships to continue playing baseball. Over the last 9 years, the foundation has been laid for the future of competing for Championships. It all starts with the youth programs working toward a common vision of competing at a higher level while acknowledging all success comes from our Lord Jesus Christ.
If you have interest in the NOAH Baseball program please feel free to contact the Baseball Athletic Director, Darron Replogle at 918-640-8102 or baseball@noahjags.org or visit the NOAH website at www.noahjags.org
Recently, the varsity team competed in the Homeschool World Series in Auburndale, Florida where they finished in 7th place out of 28 teams. The Jaguars knocked off the undefeated and heavily favorite Peachtree City, Georgia team to advance to the final round of eight. Senior shortstop Jebadiah Penrod and freshman pitcher Josh Ferguson were selected to the HWSA All-American team. Five players over the last three years have been named as HWSA All-Americans. In 2010, NOAH won the HWSA Division 3 championship. “Our goal is to play against the best competition during the regular season to prepare for the Homeschool World Series”, says head coach, Ray Blake. “We feel like to be better

Concussions “Hot Button Topic” By: Dr.Lienen
Concussions and head injuries are a “hot button topic” in the media and the athletic world today. Over the past couple of years new rules and regulations have been implemented at every level from state school boards, to collegiate programs, to professional sports organizations. The primary goal in dealing with concussions is the safety of the athlete and the future health of their brain and cognitive function. Returning an athlete back to the field before they are fully healed from their head injury can lead to catastrophic results and potential life-long injury. The current science of concussions leads us to believe that the true damage is done on a cellular level, affecting the way the cells of the brain function and handle various nutrients and neurotransmitters. Thus tests that evaluate for structural damage such as CT scans, MRI scans, etc. are often normal in concussion injuries. To better address concussions and to aid in their management, health professionals need the proper clinical tools. One such tool recently made available in Oklahoma is called the ImPACT™ Test. ImPACT™ (Immediate Post-concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing), is a concussion injury management program developed around a computer-based, cognitive function test. Pioneered by the University of Pittsburgh Medical
Center, ImPACT™ is designed to measure cognitive brain function before and after a concussion, thus allowing a physician to follow a standardized protocol. This is necessary to avoid further brain injury and the potential for permanent damage. Originally designed for elite athletes, the program is now available to competitive and recreational athletes and others who are at greater risk for concussion injuries including construction workers, oilfield personnel, and heavy machinery operators. Community Hospital’s Sports Medicine Concussion Program has become the state’s only credentialed, ImPACT™ clinic. Dr. Jason Leinen leads the program and has also been named the first and only Credentialed ImPACT™ Consultant in Oklahoma. The initial ImPACT™ assessment test takes about 20 minutes to complete. The assessment provides a baseline report of normal cognitive brain function. When the individual suffers a suspected concussion, he or she retakes the same test within 24-72 hours after receiving the injury. The results of both tests are compared and used to determine the severity of the concussion, appropriate treatment plan and the recovery time needed to ensure proper brain healing. ImPACT™ is the premier tool of its kind available today, and is currently used by the NFL, NHL,
MLB, US Olympic, and US Soccer teams, as well as multiple universities and high schools around the country to create comprehensive concussion care plans for their athletes. This proven treatment and injury management program is now available to the general public, right here in Oklahoma. While a baseline ImPACT™ test can be taken at anytime, it is recommended that this be completed prior to the start of a sport or season and is considered valid for a 2 year period. The ImPACT™ baseline testing is available by appointment from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday – Friday at the OSSO Spine Center, 3115 SW 89th Street. Appointments can be made by calling (405) 600-1411. The cost for the baseline test and data storage is $40. This can also be combined with a comprehensive pre-participation sports physical examination performed by Dr. Leinen. Dr. Jason Leinen is board certified in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine. He has experience in a full array of non-operative musculoskeletal conditions and has worked with athletes from the high school to professional level utilizing ImPACT™ in the management of a variety of head injuries, both simple and complex. For more information please call (405) 600-1411 or visit www. CommunityHospitalOKC.com.

klahoma baseball players stormed national recruiting news and awards lists this year, and the state championship games proved Oklahoma’s love for baseball. Nearly 5,000 baseball fans swarmed ONEOK Field for the 6A and 5A games. This year, two of Oklahoma’s best met in the Class 6A state championship game. Broken Arrow’s Archie Bradley faced down Owasso, but not Owasso’s standout pitcher Dylan Bundy on the mound. Bundy pitched seven innings in a game the night before against helping the Rams behind the plate. Owasso was looking primed to take the title, going into the championship game on a 33-game winning streak but Broken Arrow showed Oklahoma why they had been No. 1 in the statewide coaches’ rankings. The Tigers

took the title, winning 4-0 after Bradley pitched a two-hitter with 14 strikeouts. In 5A, Bishop Kelley didn’t waste any time in the first inning. Bishop Kelley’s Cameron O’Brien hit a groundout, which opened up the way for teammate Blake Jones to steal third and scored. In the seventh inning, the score was 3-0. Michael Fulmer of Deer Creek stepped up to bat and batted in two runs. Pitcher Chris Rhoads of Bishop Kelley shut down Deer Creek’s chances of catching up. Rhoads ended the game having struck out eight batters and not issuing any walks. Locust Grove and Woodward were the Cinderella stories of the year. The two schools were underrated going into the season, having been forgotten in most of the state polls. Neither school

It was Crane’s first game since he was sidelined for shoulder inflammation about a month ago. His rest paid off for the Wildcats, who beat the Pirates 4-2 and won the school’s first spring state baseball championship. the quarter finals and Heritage Hall 4-3 in the semi finals, the Pirates defeated Woodward 4-0. The Verdigris Cardinals came into the state championship games with batting averages that would make pros jealous. They kept that going through to the weekend, scoring 23 runs in three games. Eufala’s Hayden Walch helped the Ironheads to a 2-0 lead after the first inning and it looked like the Cardinals were down. It wasn’t until the top of the sixth that Verdigris started racking up runs, but once they did they didn’t stop. Cody Armbrister of Verdigris hit a three-run double, and made his way to home when Eufala lost control of the ball. In the end, the Cardinals stole the weekend, beating Eufala 8-2.

The larger schools might draw bigger crowds, but the smaller schools have just as much action and twice the heart. when they came out on Saturday, and it showed in their play. The Panther’s Jason Esparza scored a home run for Granite in the first, but the Eagles overpowered Granite before the end of the first inning, scoring four runs. Another title for the Union Redskins in football, Booker T. Washington takes title honors in football and basketball This year brought a lot of eye-opening experiences and fueled several rivalries into overdrive in Eastern Oklahoma. The Cascia Hall cheer squad kicked off things this season, taking top honors at Regionals against their longstanding rivals. Avenging their loss in the Backyard Bowl, Union continued its title streak to take home their third straight football title. Wrestling was fierce this season, and some of the state powerhouses, like Broken Arrow, Perry, Collinsville and Tuttle were redefined. After being beaten in football, Jenks boys won the title in swimming, but the girls lost to Union. In boys basketball, the Booker T. Washington Hornets stole the show, and the East Central girls fought fiercely to finish as 5A runner-ups. Homeschool basketball took off this season, with the NOAH Jaguars facing down several tough opponents including Sand Springs and Bishop Kelley. For Audie Harmon, a Broken Arrow junior, life is
all about learning from the past.
“I’ve always had a rough life. I haven’t had the
ideal nuclear family,” Audie said. “I beat myself up for that. But the more I went to church and got
involved the more I felt like God wanted something better for me. God puts the past there for a reason: so we can learn from it and move on.”
Once Audie realized that, she started moving on
