36 A New Breed of Dog

The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs had a season to remember in 2009 capping off a great regular season with a state championship, but some of the names you remember from that squad are gone. Now they look to repeat with a new breed of Lincoln Christian Bulldog.

42 Their Space

When we first debuted “their space” it was a big hit, so we decided to bring it back for August. VYPE invaded the office of Union head football coach Kirk Fridrich, the car of Lincoln football player Trent Vogt and the bedroom of Holland Hall cheerleader Christine Basora.

League 46 Summer Volleyball

The regular season starts in August, but for many area volleyball players the real work is put in during the summer. We asked several area coaches to give us their take on summer league play and its benefits.

The Broken Arrow softball tournament will play host to teams across the state of Oklahoma. Will Caney Valley surprise teams again this year or will someone else step up?

Feel The Excitement

Another year rapidly approaches and VYPE is geared up and ready to go. The start of the 2010-11 football season is just around the corner. Teams have endured on of the hottest summers on record and fought through tough summer workouts. August has finally arrived and soon two-a-day practices will be a memory and teams will start to prepare for their opponents. It’s a great time to be a high school sports fan! The Lincoln Christian Bulldogs had a fast rise to the top of Class 2A, but with several major contributors lost to graduation can the Bulldogs stay on top in one of the toughest classes in Oklahoma. Head coach Darren Melton has a new breed of dog running around the campus and this breed has both speed and muscle.

Sarah Tolson from Pawhuska is making her name known by becoming one of the hot prospects for the U.S. Olympic team. First she tries to conquer the Junior Olympics in the discus. We invade the space of some area coaches and players in the second edition of Their Space. Whose office, locker, car or bedroom will we invade this time? Kwame Sexton from Holland Hall is this month’s Triple Play. Sexton is an outstanding football player for the Dutch and wants to bring home an SPC Championship this season.

Don’t forget to support the advertisers in the magazine. Without them the magazine would not be possible. So do like I do and text 27297 to Arby’s for a free value menu item. It’s that easy. VYPE promises to bring you the best coverage in high school sports and continue providing our readers with quality articles, news and photos. Football Preview

The magazine is much improved this year. I know there is a ton of work that goes into it, and I know it’s like pulling teeth to get information on some of these teams. Anyway, I just wanted to say, “Good job, and keep up the good work.” I assume you have seen some of the criticism on the CoachesAid forums. Take it and use it to make the magazine even better next year. My son is a senior at Valliant, and it was really cool to see his name

in a magazine of this quality, even one little statement. I suppose there are parents and grandparents all over the state that feel the same way. Thanks for your work.

Tracy M. Valliant, OK

Golf Tournament I’ve played in the VYPE golf tournament every year, but haven’t heard anything about this year’s event. Did I miss it? Please let me know if you have any info. Thanks.

Jim C. Tulsa, OK

Editor’s Note: (No worries Jim. The tournament is set for September. I believe we’re looking at the 12th. Stay tuned. I will make sure you have all the info as soon as it is finalized. Should be another great event and an excellent day of golf.)

Where is Three Rivers? I keep hearing on VYPE radio that you have a magazine in Three Rivers. Where is the Three Rivers magazine actually located? Kim L. Owasso, OK Editor’s Note: (The Three Rivers market covers a large area between Sallisaw, Ft. Gibson, Tahlequah, Muskogee, Haskell, Wagoner and everything in between. We felt a magazine in that region would allow us to focus efforts on those schools instead of including them in Tulsa. Although you may see them in the Eastern Oklahoma magazine. Also look for a new magazine in the Northwest region of Oklahoma this Fall!)

People Need to Get Over It I know this won’t make it in the magazine, but I just want to say that these people that criticize VYPE for whatever reason are sad individuals. Get a life and be glad someone is devoting time and effort to these kids. Find something else to complain about. Give them my email, I’ll tell them the things you can’t!

Darrell R. Tulsa, OK

Editor’s Note: (Thanks Darrell. Love the energy. We’ll stay focused on the positive and never the negative as we continue to cover the kids in Oklahoma.)

LOCKER TALK

Hear this VYPE Nation. Some tidbits that you may want to know about 2010. LT Pfaff will be the All-Time leading passer in OK high school history. Have I got your attention now? The launch of the VYPE Northwest Oklahoma monthly magazine. It is finally time to expand to the northwest and cover so many kids and schools who don’t get the coverage they deserve. We will be covering anything and everything on a monthly basis. 5,000 magazines will be distributed monthly at every Pioneer Communications office and store in northwest Oklahoma.

Class realignment. With Classes 3A, 2A, and A all being split evenly with 58 teams a piece, we will see some interesting matchups. For instance, 2009 Class 2A state title contenders Kingfisher and Stigler both move to 3A. Class 4A state champions Star Spencer move to 3A as well. So we will see two state champions from 2009 competing in 3A in 2010. Star Spencer – 4A and Cascia Hall – 3A,.

Surprise team of 2010. Two teams. Bixby and Heritage Hall. Bixby moves up to 6A but has a great chance to make the playoffs. Heritage Hall moves up to 3A and is far removed from the 2008 state championship they won in 2A, but they are ripe and BSJ is ready to run.

Coach of the Year. When all is said and done, Darrell Hall will be the coach of the year in Class 5A with the BTW Hornets.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

Will Shattuck start new streak? Yes. Plain and simple. Troy Bullard is too good to have his team start any sort of losing anytime soon.

AUGUST 2010 ::

5A is going to be a dogfight. Carl Albert reloads with some serious talent, but the absence of JT Realmuto may make it difficult. Darrell Hall takes over at Booker T. Washington and will have the Hornets primed. Guthrie and East Central return loads of talent and will be there as well.

::

Don’t forget to eat when you travel. With class realignment and an abundance in travel, be sure to check out some of the establishments known for their food when you are traveling. For example, got to hit up Eischen’s Chicken if you are anywhere near the Kingfisher/Okarche area. Cattleman’s Steakhouse is a must if you are traveling to OKC. Mayhlon’s BBQ is to die for if you are anywhere near Muskogee. Want pizza—get the best at Rodney’s Pizza in Purcell. Make a trip to Catfish Hole south of Sallisaw— gotta have it. More to come in next month’s features.

Who will be the state’s top rusher? Wow, an abundance of performers to choose from. Can’t miss record-breaker Zack Langer from Jenks. Also Barry Sanders Jr. of Heritage Hall. And don’t forget Jordan Eagle Road of Talihina and Andrew Long of Southmoore.

VYPE.COM

Bixby and Shawnee are joining the big boys. Probably not in a situation where the two schools are going to see 5A again, both will now be in the largest class for good. With both school’s enrollment rising, they will be forced to throw their hat in the ring. Look for Loren Montgomery to lead the Spartans to the playoffs in 6A-4 while quarterback Brayle Brown will have to be his best to steer the Wolves to the playoffs.

Will it be Jenks and Union again in 6A? Not if Kendal Thompson of Southmoore and Archie Bradley of Broken Arrow have anything to say about it. Also look for Kirby Schoenthaler’s Bartlesville Bruins and a Nick Warehime-led Del City team with loads of talent.

THE OFFICIAL By Cory Schoonover

WORD

Are there any football rule changes for the 2010 season?

It’s been a long couple of months off VYPE Nation and so good to get going again. Another good question, I have always thought, in all sports, we the fans should keep up with the rule changes! So, here we go, let’s kick off another awesome VYPE season! There were 12 rule changes approved by the NFHS for the 2010 season.

The concussion rule:

In the previous rule officials were to remove an athlete from play if unconscious or apparently unconscious, and could “return to play” with written authorization by an M.D. Now, officials must remove any player who shows signs, symptoms or behaviors consistent with a concussion, such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems, and shall not return to play until cleared by an M.D.

Equipment changes:

Approval of new football gloves/hand pads standard for the 2012 season. Beginning in 2012, gloves, must meet the NOCSAE standards.

Removal of restrictions on penalty-marker colored pads or gloves; revisions in the padding rule for guards, casts and braces; and clarification of the illegal player equipment rule.

Rule 9-4-3k, clarification to the Horse-Collar rule:

Under the previous rule, if the horse-collar occurred inbounds, but the tackle was completed out of bounds, in the end zone, or after a loss of player possession, a horse-collar foul could not be called as the player was no longer a runner. Now a horse-collar foul can be called even if the runner no longer had possession of the ball or the ball became dead by rule.

Miscellaneous:

Rule 8-2, 6 existing articles were refined and a new article created regarding fouls on scoring plays that have succeeding spot enforcement. The changes now give both teams the same options when a non-player or unsportsmanlike conduct foul is committed during a down in which a touchdown is scored. In other changes, the point differential rule by state adoption was modified to allow state associations to terminate a game at any point once the point differential is reached. Previously, the end of the first half was the earliest termination of a game by rule. Rule 3-2-2, the coin toss, “No more than 4 captains per team may be on the field of play for the coin toss.” Rule 3-7-1, the timeframe for replacing players rephrased, from “immediately” to “within 3 seconds.” Finally, field markings are altered in 9-, 8- and 6-player football. All players who participated in the previous down and all substitutes must be momentarily between the 7-yard marks, if they play on regulation 80-yard fields. We look forward to a great year, keep the questions coming, and enjoy the season!

Redskins Football Team Playing Tough Non-District Schedule

The Union Redskins have their work cut out for them this season. On the 28th of August the Redskins host the Gridiron Classic at Tuttle Stadium. They follow up the scrimmage by going on the road to Evangel Christian, a perennial powerhouse team from Louisiana. Then they return home to host Jenks in the Backyard Bowl. Following those tough games the Redskins go on the road to play a Broken Arrow Tiger team that features one of the states top players in Archie Bradley. The Redskins are no stranger to going on the road and playing tough teams. Trips to Farmington New Mexico, Clovis California, Fort Smith Arkansas, Columbus Ohio and now Evangel Christian in Shreveport, Louisiana dot their resume. Tale of Two

W

Story Lines hen putting together our Backyard bowl issue, we tend to always find a theme. This year, we are going with two separate story lines. First, Jenks will be highlighted with their record-breaking running back

Zack Langer. Then we will look at the secret about the Redskins. After graduating six D-1 players, not

many people knew how good this team would be, but with former receiver Kale Pearson taking over at quarterback, the

Skins may have the best signal caller they have had in recent memory. Couple that with a team full of very talented players who haven’t gotten their chance, and the Skins might explode into a team of great talent, leadership, and discipline. All the makings of another state championship run.

Move Over Jenks Greats, Langer is Back For Another Run at the Title

After obliterating the Jenks single season and single game touchdown records, the humble Langer returns for his senior year. When asked about the records he now holds at Jenks, Langer turns sheepish and gives glory while commending the offensive line that got him there.

Langer rushed for 2,346 yards on the season and broke the singleseason touchdown record with 38 and the single-game touchdown record with eight against Bartlesville on October 23rd. Both were longstanding Jenks records held by Richie Calmus.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS

SEPTEMBER 2010

Overtaking Richie Calmus and being mentioned in the same breathe as Rocky Calmus, KeJuan Jones, and Chris Atkins has really been surreal for Langer. The senior has no intentional purpose to overtake records, but just wants his team to win and if it means rushing for a plethora of yards and touchdowns, then it is all part of whatever it takes.

36

1994 – Jenks survived a 23-point second quarter orchestrated by legendary Union quarterback Justin Fuente and running back Eric Bernard. Fuente threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns but Jerry Wisne and company had the last laugh as the Trojans held on to a 37-30 victory. Richie Calmus also chipped in with 152 yards rushing. Union ended up losing a heartbreaker to Midwest City in the State Finals.

1995 – Jenks taillback Josh Fidler rushed for 116 yards and three first-half touchdowns as the Trojans blitzed Union 28-7. Redskin quarterback Gerren Comeaux completed just 2 of 14 passes for 30 yards Chris Claybon had

Some will say without the likes of Jake Alexander and Bob Graham paving the way for the Trojan thoroughbred, he may struggle this year. Well all you have to do is witness a Jenks preseason practice to understand how hard offensive line coach David Alexander and the revamped Trojan offensive line are

a season-low 129 yards as Ron Lancaster’s defense put the clamps on the potent Union offense.

1996 – With 181 yards and three touchdowns, Josh Fidler gave the Skins all they could handle in a 42-14 blowout of Union. Rocky Calmus spelled Fidler with 136 yards and three more touchdowns. Sherard Poteete threw three interceptions as two were picked off by Matt McCoy. Jenks went on to avenge an overtime semifinal loss to Midwest City in 1995 to claim the state title. 1997 – Jenks’ Legion of Doom defense led by Rocky Calmus, Jason Lohr, Justin Dixon,

Sean Mahan and Brett Butler limited the high flying Redskins to 95 total yards before a crowd of 15,200 at Union-Tuttle Stadium. Calmus carried the load on offense with two touchdowns and led the Trojans to a 21-11 victory. Jenks went on to win a second straight state title, 56-8, over Yukon. 1998 – 9,000 spectators packed HunterDwelley to witness the most exciting UnionJenks game in the series. In a back-and-forth scoring fest, Danny Morris rushed for 209 yards and six touchdowns and Josh Blankenship threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins ended a six-year losing streak against the Trojans, 55-45. working. “We have some new players that you may not know,” said Langer. “Sam Sabin is an offensive linemen that we will look to step. Our offensive line is young but they are looking really good.” Allan Trimble will also look to senior gunslinger Sawyer Kollmorgan, who is impressing everyday and will be looked upon to rip defenses apart for cheating on the run-game in stopping Langer. Kollmorgan has Backyard Bowl experience along with Langer and he looks forward to taking on the challenge. “As a kid I remember going to all the Jenks-Union games. We would make signs for the players and write them good luck cards,” said Kollmorgan. “This game always goes down to the wire.”

Langer agreed about the talismanic affect of the Backyard Bowl. Last year’s game served as the breakout performance for Langer and he never looked back. “Everyone knows it is an awesome game. You never know what is going to happen and it tends to make the best out of all of us.” Kollmorgan talked about the great players before him as if they were inspirations. “There have been so many great players for Jenks including Rocky Calmus, KeJuan Jones, Andrew Brewer, Tanner Shuck, Chris Atkins, and Mark Ginther. They always played hard and would make big plays during the game. But no matter how big the name, it is always the lesser known players who tend to sway the outcome of this game.”

2000 – The greatest Jenks-Union showdown came at Skelly Stadium where a crowd of 34,000 watched Kejuan Jones take an 80-yard pass to the house as time expired, giving the Trojans a 41-37 victory. The future Sooner had 307 yards of total offense and five touchdowns

1999 – State Finals - A sellout crowd of 40,385 packed Skelly Stadium to watch two of the nation’s best teams square off for a finals rematch. Union dominated the stats by outgaining the Trojans 333-175 in yardage, but the opportunistic Trojan defense was able to keep

1999 – The rivalry blew-up after the ’98 season and 16,000 people packed Union-Tuttle Stadium to watch the Redskins defeat Jenks 27-24 in overtime. Union quarterback Tyler Gooch found Jay Felker in the end zone to put an end to one the best Union-Jenks showdowns ever.

the Redskins out of the end zone just enough to preserve a 14-7 victory. Jenks tailback Kejuan Jones rushed for 108 yards and one TD on 17 attempts. Union held the Trojans to just nine yards after the first quarter but couldn’t seem to get enough from their offense. Jenks took the state title for the fourth consecutive time behind legacies Scott McCoy, Todd Fidler and Brandon Lohr.

SEPTEMBER 2010

1998 – State Championship The Trojans avenged the early season loss to the Redskins by claiming their third straight state title in a 41-28 triumph over the Skins in front of 28,000 spectators at Lewis Field in Stillwater. Ben Bowling had the game of his life accounting for 345 total yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore Bobby Klinck also pitched in with 134 yards rushing. The Trojan defense was efficient enough in holding Blankenship, Morris, Michael Johnson, Austin Chadwick and the rest of Union’s

record-setting offense in check.

over 1,100 yards of offense, the two teams had fans going crazy on the warm September evening.

The Secret’s Out

These Redskins have a chance to do something that has never been done before. Win three state championships in a row. Understand that this doesn’t come easy and if you asked head coach Kirk Fridrich, he would tell you that it takes even more work than it took the previous two years. But this class of seniors is up for the challenge and has been working harder than ever before. Led by the tenacious Kale Pearson. The Redskins receiver in 2009 was the X-factor for the Skins last year. Sparking the team when a big play was needed. In last year’s state championship game, the Trojans scored a second consecutive touchdown in the second half to pull within 18-points. On the ensuing kickoff, Pearson took the kickoff 90 yards to silence any sort of comeback and dashed the hopes of the Trojan faithful.

Pearson leads a team of seniors that include receiver Christian Hood, offensive lineman Chance Haley, Blake Jones (Who was moved to tackle from tight end), running back Jalen Hearron, defensive lineman Corbin Stall, and Brentom Todd. When you couple outstanding juniors like Javon Bowler and two-year starter Blace Walser, with the senior Richard Stanley in the defensive backfield. There are also some players who Pearson cites that you may not know about. “Stephon Weaver and Gabe Osifeso are senior receivers who is emerging as a great player,” said Pearson. Blace Walser, who led the Skins in tackles as a sophomore last year, cites a good corp of linebackers that are only juniors and will learn fast with Walser’s experience. “We have Kyle Cruthchmer lining up at with me. He’s a national champion wrestler and a real good player,” said Walser. “And watch out for Blayke Elder. He has speed and the three of us should all work well together as long as we keep developing.”

Pearson is geared up and ready to roll for his senior year. “Just like any other senior I want to go out the right way. But we have some big shoes to fill and want to continue the tradition we have here at Union.”

38

Walser loves the atmosphere and the great tradition that the Jenks-Union rivalry brings. “This rivalry is special because neither team is willing to give an inch. It really does not matter who we are playing, but if the opponent is from Jenks it makes you wanna win that much more.” Come the end of September, some of these new faces for the Redskins may be household names. Since Union plays perhaps one of the tougher non-district schedules in the state, Fridrich and

in an epic battle against the Skins. Tyler Gooch and Trinity Dawson led the charge for Union but it wasn’t enough in the end. 2000 – State Finals Another huge crowd of 32,000 showed up at Skelly Stadium to watch the Redskins and Trojans duke it out for the third straight year. The Trojans took a 24-0 halftime lead. Tyler Gooch and Jerome Janet desperately struggled to bring the Skins back in the second half before Union fell to the Trojans 31-12. 2001 – The Union-Jenks regular season rivalry was cancelled due to 9-11.

2002 – A crowd of 26,000 saw Jenks take an early 12-2 lead over the Skins, but with Spencer McIllwain nursing a groin pull, Kurt Quillman became the unlikely hero with 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Union came back to defeat the Trojans 33-12. Jake Spavital also connected on a 30-yard score. Union went on to win their first state title in over 40 years by upending Broken Arrow.

2003 – The most lopsided game in the great Union-Jenks rivalry was witnessed by 13,000 fans who braved torrential rainfall to watch a healthy Union squad dominate the Trojans 37-0. The Skins, led by the state’s best player in Zac Snider, along with Nathan Peterson and

Adam Blankenship shut Jenks out for the first time since 1984. Kurt Quillman led the Skins with 26 carries for 181 yards.

2003 State Semifinals – Freddie Carolina rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns as Jenks avenged the early season shutout to the Redskins 14-12. A mash-unit of Redskins tried to pull off a comeback in the fourth quarter but came up short. Union was without Zac Snider, who was sidelined after a knee injury suffered the previous week. Nathan Peterson was also banged up as Jake Spavital’s valiant effort came up short. The Trojans won their seventh title in eight years.

FEATURE his staff are trying to expedite the learning process for the team. “We do return a solid group of starters from the both sides of the ball and look forward to continuing to build our team with a good group of juniors that received lots of playing time last year,” said Fridrich. Keys To Winning

All About the Running Game As cliché as it sounds, it is all about the running game for the Redskins and Trojans. The defensive front of Union has their hands full in stopping Langer and the Trojan rushing attack. This was a key to the state championship game for the Redskins. With Pearson taking over at quarterback, the Skins will rely heavily on Hearron to get the ground game going. If the Trojans young offensive line can develop rather quickly and open holes for Langer, then Jenks will have a big advantage.

Unknown Heroes This game has always brought out the best in the players, and there is always a relatively unknown star who emerges from the contest. Last year, no one really knew about Langer until he scampered for 135 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Trevor Staub is a defensive end for the Trojans and has the ability to make a huge impact. Also Matt McPheters who lines up on the other side of Staub. The receiving corp of the Skins with Hood and Weaver will have plenty of opportunities to make big plays. Also don’t forget about Osifeso. The senior has impressed in camp and in scrimmages and is looking to bust out against Jenks.

Turnovers Are Key Last year, Union turned the ball over five times that ultimately doomed the Skins. In the 23 games since 1994, the team that wins the turnover battle has gone on to win the game 81% of the time. (13-3). The remaining seven games, the two teams had the same amount of turnovers. Protecting the ball will be key and some of those unknown heroes we cited might be responsible for an interception or fumble recovery.

Leadership Kills There are equal amounts of leadership on both sides as Langer and Kollmorgan return on the Jenks offense and Pearson and Walser return for the Redskins. Stanley will also be key in the Redskin secondary as a senior leader. Jenks also has Trent Martin and Brandon Crump at linebacker who will be setting the example for the younger Trojans. 2006 – With 39 seconds left, Brandon Rogers fired a 34-yard TD pass to Brad Wondra that would have erased Jenks’ three-point lead and put Union ahead. However, before the pass was delivered, a penalty flag was tossed for illegal motion in the Redskins’ backfield. Jenks’ defense then held on the next three plays to

::

2005 – Isaac Norman scored on a 64-yard pass from Jake Strain with 18 seconds remaining to give Class 6A No. 2 Jenks a 4844 victory over top-ranked 6A Union in the Backyard Bowl before a crowd of 24,110 at Skelly Stadium. Jake Borgsmiller caught three TDs for Union while quarterback Casey Whorton threw for 197 yards and four TDs.

Oklahoma-bound Dominique Franks also had a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD. Tanner Shuck, Jake Laptad, and Tony Gillespie held on to keep the Redskins at bay for most of the second half. Union went on to win the 2005 state title game against Mustang in decisive fashion. This ended long-time Union coach Bill Blankenship’s era as the Skins coach.

SEPTEMBER 2010

2004 – State Finals For the fourth time in six years the Redskins and Trojans would face off in the 6A State Championship. Brad Glenn, a Union fullback who joined the squad at mid-season, stole the show with 189 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. Phillip Dillard and the Jenks

defense could not find an answer as Glenn seemed to slip out of the backfield to catch numerous passes and bulldoze his way into the end zone. Andrew Brewer and company were able to amass 332 yards of offense but that was not enough as Union finally beats Jenks in the state championship 27-17.

::

2004 – The Trojans held off a late Union push to beat the Redskins 17-13 before an estimated crowd of 25,000 at Skelly Stadium. Andrew Brewer and Freddie Carolina were the heroes for Jenks as they combined for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Phillip Dillard and the Trojan defense held Tony Moore and the Union offense to 267 yards.

before a crowd of 21,723 on Friday night at Chapman Stadium. Tony Gillespie and the rest of the Trojan defense forced two turnovers and held the talented Union offensive running game to 111 yards. Jenks won their ninth state title in 12 years.

2008 - Another fantastic finish was added on Friday night to the history of the Jenks-Union football rivalry that already had more than its share of amazing endings. For the second straight year, Jeremy Smith scored the winning overtime touchdown, this time on a 1-yard run, to help fourth-ranked Union outlast top-ranked Jenks 24-17 at Union-Tuttle Stadium in a battle of Class 6A powers. Jenks quarterback Beau Marsaln tossed two fourth quarter TDs to bring the comeback for the Trojans. Redskins receiver Tracy Moore was named the game’s most valuable player as he caught nine passes for 128 yards. With a capacity crowd of over 15,000, Union-Tuttle Stadium was rocking. Union’s Chase Boyce threw for over 200 yards and Thomas Roberson scored on a 47-yard reverse in the first half.

2008 – State Championship Union won its fifth state title Friday with a 34-20 win over Jenks in a Class 6A state high school football championship before 19,000 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Union answered Jenks’ second half rally when the Trojans tied the game 20-20 in the third quarter. However, Union had too many weapons with a stout defense and the running of Jeremy Smith. Smith had three touchdowns on runs of 44, 32 and 15. Overall, Smith had 242 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Chase Boyce connected with Thomas Roberson on two second half scores. Jenks’ Tramaine Thompson provided an offensive spark with

138 yards rushing and a 50-yard punt return for a third quarter score.

2009 – A star is born as Jenks running back Zack Langer bursts on to the scene for the Trojans as they won 27-25 in another thriller. The junior had 135 yards on 32 carries and scored on runs of 23 and 34-yards in the second half to seal the deal. Thomas Roberson returned a punt for a touchdown and caught another. Jenks’ Sawyer Kollmorgan ran for a score and hit Tyler Ott for another. The game was capped off with five turnovers from the Redskins and the Trojans took advantage. The attendance was announced at over 19,000, bringing the 15-year total to over 400,000 in spectators since 1994.

2009 – State Championship The 2009 Class 6A state championship game produced another big surprise in the UnionJenks rivalry — the largest blowout in the seven title showdowns between the teams. For the second straight year, Union defeated Jenks in the 6A final behind a huge night from Union receiver Thomas Roberson. Roberson returned the opening kickoff on a lateral from Jacob Rice to scamper 76-yards for the score. Union’s Chase Boyce had 165 total yards and accounted for three touchdowns as Union. He became the first Union quarterback to start two championship wins. Union finished the half with a 32-0 lead and capped it off with a 52-19 victory. Union’s Luke Snider and company led the Redskin defense in shutting down the state’s top runner. Jenks Zack Langer was never able to get in gear but still accounted for over 150 yards and a score. That was Union’s sixth title in eight years and the 16th year in a row that Union or Jenks have claimed the 6A title.

Volleyball is growing in popularity amongst high school athletes and a big reason is they can play all year. Summer league volleyball has become the “off-season” of competitive volleyball players in Oklahoma. By Jennifer Murphy Photos by Brad Heath

The sound of volleyballs bouncing on the floor and the chatter of 40 or more girls fills the gym. It’s summer league volleyball in Oklahoma. Schools have committed to becoming better at the sport and the coaches know if they want to be competitive in Oklahoma they must get their girls in summer leagues.

In volleyball you dive on the floor, block shots, spend most of time at the net jumping up and down, and you chase any ball that might land on your

During the camp at Bishop Kelley it was obvious the girls participating were working hard, but working just as hard were the coaches. Jerri Wadsworth-Berna was all over the floor coaching her girls and players from other teams. At one point she stopped play and called the Verdigris girls and the Bishop Kelley girls to the net and told them “you’re tired, but you have to fight through that and stay alert. The mistakes that are being made right now are basic errors. You are all better than what we are seeing right now.” The girls responded with some spirited play to finish the set.

Former Sand Springs volleyball coach Linda Garrett said, “any time you continue playing a sport, any sport, an athlete will continue to improve their skills, knowledge, and confidence regardless of their athletic ability.” Coach Caleb Horton has taken over for Garrett at Sand Springs. On a recent trip to Bishop Kelley High School I sat and watched as host Bishop Kelley played against teams like Bartlesville, Verdigris and Union. It’s really more of a practice with game type situations. One coach described it as “volleyball chaos within a controlled environment.” From the looks of the tired faces I could tell the work was taking it’s toll. But that’s the price they will pay to become better. “We work hard during these camps and listen to what all the coaches have to say. It only makes us better players,” said a Verdigris player.

Sarah Tolson fulfills a dream of competing at the first Youth Olympic games in Singapore

oung athletes have many “moments to remember” during their career, but there is usually one that will stick with them for life.

Sarah Tolson’s lifetime memory came during the Class 3A state high school track meet at Ardmore last spring. No it wasn’t winning her second consecutive state discus title and establishing a state meet throw of 148-6 or placing second in the shot put. The Pawhuska senior’s “moment to remember” came following her state title winning toss when her parents told her she had been selected as a member of Team USA to compete in the first Youth Olympic Games to be held in Singapore on August 14-26. Tolson, who will compete in the discus, is one of 20 members of the team from across the U.S. making up the team. She is one of two Oklahomans selected to the team. Gunnar Nixon of Edmond will compete in the high jump.

The Youth Olympic Games are a sporting event for young people ages 16 and 17, balancing sport, education and culture. These games work as a catalyst to promote these three themes throughout the Olympic Movement. The Youth Olympic Games are the first to be held and will include 5,000 athletes and officials from around the world.

Tolson, who competed in a trial at Arlington, Texas, in early April, won with a toss of 140 feet but wasn’t sure she was going to make the team after winning. “It was a small meet, but with good completion,” said Tolson. “We (competitors) all knew that not everyone was going to be selected even if you won your event. “It was a long wait. I knew I had a pretty good chance but I was anxious.”

The good news came the weekend of the state high school track meet, but it was kept from her for a day by her parents, who broke the news to her. “There was a conference call on Thursday, (day before the state high school meet) and I couldn’t be on the conference call because I was on my way by bus to the state meet in Ardmore. My parents kept it from me until after I competed at

“At first I was kind of numb,” said Tolson.” It took me a while to process it all. But then I started to scream and people were looking at me kind of weird. “It was a moment to remember. It was exciting, not only for me but by trainer and family.” “Tolson has been preparing for her overseas venture by training at home in Pawhuska and by assisting her trainer in Owasso with a summer camp.

The entire trip is paid for by the U.S. and International Olympic Committees. Tolson’s domestic travel is covered by the USOC and her travel to Singapore to compete by the IOC. “This doesn’t cost me anything,” said Tolson. “They provide uniforms, housing, and meals for me to compete.”

Tolson and the other 19 members of the team will leave JFK International Airport on August 9th return to the United States on August 28th. Sarah will not be alone on the trip across the pond. Both her parents, mother Sheila and father Steve will be attending the competition, while Sarah will be staying in an athlete’s village. “I am so proud that Sarah has this great opportunity,” said Sheila Tolson.” She is such a hard worker and has dedicated so much time to her throwing. I am really excited to go to Singapore and watch her compete at an international level. Sarah is such a focused competitor and I am anxious to see how she does at such a huge venue.”

Said her father Steve, “It’s big! This is a great opportunity that she has trained many years for. It is special that she will be able to represent herself, her family, her community, and her country.”

It will be the Tolson family’s first overseas trip and one they are looking forward too. ”We have been to Mexico a few times but never overseas,” said Sheila.” We are excited to experience the culture and atmosphere that the first Youth Olympic Games brings. This is an inaugural event and holds a huge significance since it is the first new event by the International Olympic Committee since the creation of the Winter Olympics.” Sarah is looking forward to the competition, but admitted, “I am nervous about it, competing against others from around the world. But it will push me to my limit to find out where I am.” While Sarah will miss the first 2 weeks of her senior year, she believes it will worth it to have a lifetime of memories from her overseas trip. “I will have some catch up when I get back, I wouldn’t miss it for anything,” said Tolson.” Fortunately my class schedule isn’t that heavy as it has been in years past.

“It’s going to be an awesome experience. I’m really looking forward to it and getting back and sharing my experience with my classmates. It’s going to be a whole different experience, culturally and how different the world is from Pawhuska”

In January 2010, Dana O’Neil of ESPN.com wrote the article “Haskell offers haven for hidden talent.” In the article, O’Neil observed that only five out of over 5,000 Division I Basketball players were Native American. Two of the people that read this article were Braxton Redeagle, former football player at Shawnee, and Christien Crynes, honors marketing student and Tillman Scholar at Arizona State University. They saw the surprising statistics and wanted to make a change. The two former high school teammates realized that across the country, many high school basketball players fail to reach the collegiate level because of a lack of preparation and exposure. Braxton and Christien decided to create a program that would combat this problem, and the Oklahoma Assault Basketball Program was born.

54

The mission of the Oklahoma Assault Basketball Program is to help high school student-athletes from diverse backgrounds recognize their college potential and provide The College Gameplan to empower and prepare these student-athletes for a successful college career both academically and athletically. The program has a four-fold structure that includes: one-on-one attention, college visits, college preparatory workshops, and tournaments.

Summer 2010 was the inaugural year for the program, and coach Redeagle and Crynes couldn’t be more proud of their young men. The Oklahoma Assault Basketball team played in tournaments against top competition throughout the summer, to allow the players to improve on the court and to provide key exposure. While off the court, the student-athletes toured multiple campuses where they were exposed to college life and athletics first hand, as well as learned about scholarships and financial aid. They also participated in college preparatory workshops, which focused on SAT/ACT preparation, and lessons in professional development, such as interviewing tips and building resumes. Perhaps the most influential part of the program has been the one-on-one attention each student-athlete receives. Every participant of the program sits down with the coaches to individually discuss personal goals, define the scope of college prospects, and begin the recruiting process for those interested in continuing their athletic careers. The young men and their families have seen an impact, as Erik Johnson Sr. of Muskogee states, “Because of this basketball team, college has become a reality to our son. He’s now very excited about it.” Ruby Pettit likes that “they want the boys to succeed in academics as well as sports.” Many of the young men have expressed feeling honored to be part of the program. Student-athlete, Ryan Devers said, “I think what our coaches are doing is pretty cool for kids all over Oklahoma, not just in one area. They’re not just doing it one day, it’s a continued effort. I would like to see more people like our coaches.” Coach Redeagle and Crynes aim to cause a direct visible change in the Tulsa area with their program. The two believe socioeconomic difficulties should not limit ones options. These two are providing the skills to not only be accepted to a school, but also succeed once there. With great supporters like the Pat Tillman Foundation, Wilson Pipestem, the Pawhuska 5 Man Board, and Armando Hinojos, the program looks to expand to two teams, but will need greater backing. Any persons, businesses, or corporations wanting to help financially or get involved are welcome, and should contact Christien Crynes at (210) 262-9587 or ccrynes@asu.edu.

Softball The Broken Arrow Lady Tigers and Arrowhead Park will play host to 32 fast pitch softball teams on August 20th and 21st. By Brad Heath | Photos by Jerry Palmer

Broken Arrow has a strong softball program and every year they play host to one of the states toughest tournaments. Thirty-two teams converge on Arrowhead Park to spend the first day in pool play.

Pool A – Broken Arrow, Adair, Bristow, Westmoore, Claremore, Bartlesville, Jenks, Caney Valley. Pool B – Sand Springs, McLoud, Putnam City North, Haskell, Midwest City, Skiatook, Enid, Sapulpa. Pool C – Owasso, Yukon, Sperry, Hilldale, Choctaw, Claremore Sequoyah, Mannford, Muskogee. Pool D – Union, Edmond North, Pryor, Grove, Mustang, Tahlequah Sequoyah, Catoosa, Bixby.

“This is a tough tournament that gives teams a chance to see where their at early in the season and what they need to work on to improve. Each year several teams from this tournament go on to the state tournament and have success. Last year Broken Arrow went 3-2 in a rain shortened tournament, but it gave us a lot of things we needed to improve on,” said coach Randall King. The Lady Tigers return five starters from last year’s squad, but will be inexperienced on the mound. Look for returners Megan Higgins, Brooke Scott, Devyn Frazier, Shanna Johnson and Sam Forrest to have big impacts on the season. Higgins, Forrest and Alex Gilley will handle the majority of the pitching duties.

56

The only question left to ask is which team will surprise the field this year? Can Caney Valley make another run? Will Muskogee or Owasso bring their A-games? And what about someone from the West side like Yukon or Edmond North? Or can the host team defend home field and keep the title in Broken Arrow? To find out go to Arrowhead Park on August 20th-21st and take in some of the best fast pitch softball this state has to offer.

Spirit

60

Bishop Kelley is a Lasallian Catholic high school known for its strong tradition and spirit. The highly motivated faculty and staff set a standard of leadership while encouraging students to approach their entire school life with positivity and enthusiasm. Liz Ritchie, head coach of the Bishop Kelley cheer program for 11 years, is an example of such initiative. Currently, Bishop Kelley has 38 members participating in the spirit program, which consists of 10 seniors, nine juniors, eight sophomores and 11 freshmen. Their talents are reflected both in cheer and dance on one varsity squad as opposed to separate squads for each. This promotes unity and encourages friendship with total support for teammates. While the physical responsibilities for this spirit program include athleticism, organized routines, balance, coordination, timing

and physical strength, there is more to consider. These role models must be team players, confident, diligent and are expected to inspire leadership on the field or court, in the classroom as well as in their personal lives. These girls participate in various community service projects and activities throughout the year. Recent examples include a food drive benefiting Catholic Charities, volunteering at Race for the Cure and hosting a mini camp for young girls. Living out these high expectations now will promote and develop life patterns that will be carried out beyond the high school years.

This dynamic group of girls just returned from the American Cheerleaders Association’s summer camp at the University of Oklahoma. There, the squad won the ACA Achievement award, a Spirit Stick, a

Best Jumper award, a Best Tumbler award and the Camp Routine Champion award. “While we enjoy and always do well at competitions, our focus is making sure the individual team members get to experience all that they want to in high school. We encourage the members to be dedicated to cheerleading but to also get involved in Student Council, school musicals and plays, additional community service, to be class officers and more,” says Ritchie who believes that bonding is the key to experiencing a successful year and to developing memories that will last a lifetime. At Bishop Kelley, cheerleading is more than achieving perfection in performance to win competitions. It’s about representing the school, building moral with motivation and becoming successful, balanced members of our community.
