And we take a closer look at what it takes to be a cover kid! Broken Arrow quarterback Archie Bradley helps VYPE mark our fifth birthday! Can you remember the last time you were in a locker room? Maybe it was 20 years ago, maybe it was yesterday. In a two part series called “From the Locker Room” we take a look at the preparation before a game, the halftime adjustments and the post game celebration or disappointment. If you’ve ever wondered what takes place behind closed doors, then take a look at this special feature.

Backyard Bowl First I want to say the Backyard Bowl wasn’t the best game of the year, but it was another chapter in the Jenks vs. Union rivalry. I bet the Redskins use it as motivation to make a run in the playoffs. Now for my point, each year you guys use that rivalry for the cover. I think it would be cool to use other rivalry games each year. Maybe Sapulpa vs. Sand Springs, Wagoner vs. Coweta, Oologah vs. Claremore. Something to think about.

Proactive Therapy is an outpatient orthopedic sports rehabilitation center in South Tulsa, which has features that sets it apart from other facilities in the area. One of these is that their office is adjoined to Sky Fitness and Wellbeing at 101st and Sheridan (10123 S. Sheridan Rd.) This basically allows them to expand their office and rehab area to 47,000 square feet, and the ability to use of all their state of the art training equipment as patients rehabilitate from their injuries.

Kevin has workded with many collegiate and professional athletes such as the Washington Redskins, DC United and since coming to Tulsa; such home based teams as the Oilers and Talons. Also on staff to assist you is Leah Engle, PTA.

That comes to another advantage they have. With the relationship they have SKY, not only are you able to utilize their facility during your rehab, you can continue working out there at a discounted rate. The Brothers brothers (pardon the pun) have the Blue Jays rollin’ in 5A thus far this season. Kentrell and brother Richard are lighting it up. After dismantling Duncan and Ponca City, Guthrie lost a heartbreaker to a surefire Class 6A playoff contender in Enid. But pound for pound, Guthrie gets to number 10 on the list.

Class 4A is loaded and Prince McJunkins has the Bulldogs rolling. The quarterback is leading his team to a great start in 4A and has them primed for a district run. Head coach Dale Condict also has Jeremy Applegate at running back to spark the offense and Applegate also anchors the linebacking corps with Justin Wilson up front defensively.
Lincoln Christian Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have only one loss on the year and that is the team on the top of this list. Darren Melton and staff have reloaded from a team who would have been at the top of this list in 2009. Lincoln should roll through the district and be favored to face Millwood for the 2A crown.

4
Union Redskins
The Eagles are loaded in Class B and are flying high. Danny Bradley is helping lead a team that has returned plenty of playmakers from squad that scored 561 points in 2009.
Shattuck Indians
After the end of the streak and a failure to win the Class C title in 2009, Troy Bullard has his team ready to go for another run at a new streak. The Indians return a good amount of players from last year and are already proving they will be trite to contend with.
5
Cascia Hall Commandos
Joe Medina’s crew started the season a little slow with a loss to the VYPE pound-for-pound number one ranked team Holland Hall. Since then, the Commandos have destroyed the competition. Beating 4A perennial power Glenpool, and rolling everyone else. Conner Sherwood leads a stellar defense and the Blue Swarm are primed for another 3A playoff run.
Millwood Falcons
With Kevonte Richardson and Josh Turner, the Falcons are stacked. Class 2A has a plethora of good teams, but none are on the same level talent-wise as Millwood. The Falcons beat 4A contender Bishop McGuinness in a shootout and has shown their fortitude in playing larger schools.
Jenks Trojans
The Trojans are good. Really good. With program kids all over the field, quarterback Sawyer Kollmorgan and running back Zack Langer. Allan Trimble is enjoying his return to coaching in 2010. The Trojans roiled Union in Week Two and hasn’t been touched since.
Holland Hall Dutch
The Dutch, under coach Tag Gross, have annihilated the competition. Beating defending 3A state champ and 2010 favorite Cascia Hall in Week One, then demolishing the 2A defending state champion Lincoln Christian Bulldogs, the Dutch are rolling through the SPC Conference. The Dutch do not play in the OSSAA, but if they did, they would be huge favorites in 3A. Quarterback Brad Kragthorpe and University of Tulsa Commit Kwame Sexton lead a team with a huge advantage up front against anyone they play.
Other Notables Cashion (A), Carl Albert (5A), Heritage Hall (3A), Broken Bow (4A), Bishop McGuinness (4A), PondCreek Hunter (B), Temple (C), DC-Lamont (C), Booker T. Washington (5A), OBA (A)

Q A
Pass interference calls are tough to make. Why do they always go against the defense? Can’t the offense get a pass interference call?
Pass Interference, whether offensive or defensive requires 3 things. 1) Obvious intent to impede, 2) Physical contact, 3) Catchable ball (NCAA only).
Offensive pass interference, like defensive is a judgment call. To have Offensive pass interference you have to have these things 1) receiver blocking downfield (while a legally thrown forward pass is in the air), 2) Receiver pushes off, creating separation, 3) Receiver drives through an established defender. Offensive pass interference begins at the snap whereas defensive pass interference starts with the ball in the air. Offensive pass interference and defensive pass interference are both tough calls to make as a lot involved (officials have to determine if the ball was thrown beyond the line of scrimmage, and if contact was incidental) Maybe one of the single most noticeable judgment calls an official has to make. Some officials may see it differently than other and some philosophies on making that call may be different. But, to have the call, you must have one of the 3 things mentioned above.
Q A Q A
Can I get a ruling on overtime for high school football? What happens if after three overtimes the score is still tied?
High School is not like College and Professional. In High School, there are no requirements for extra points or 2-point conversions. So, after 3 overtimes, you just continue the Overtime process, until someone wins. In 8-man football what is the mercy rule?
In 8-man only, a 45 point lead at the end of the first half, or anytime during the second, begins the mercy rule. This just means, the clock continues to run, except for time-outs or ball out of bounds.
As always, the questions are excellent, if you have a rules question, don’t hesitate to send them in, and we will get the answers for you. Keep it up VYPE Nation!

While playing for the Sooners in 1996-1997, Fuente set a school record for freshman touchdown passes in a single season. After the stint in Norman, Fuente then transferred to Murray State in Kentucky and set 11 school records for passing. He also earned Ohio Valley Offensive Player of the Year. “I had a great time at Murray State,” said Fuente. “It was a good change for me and the right decision.”
After a brief period playing professionally for the Oklahoma Wranglers, Fuente started his coaching career. He was at Illinois State with head coach Denver Johnson for many years. In 2005 and 2006, his Red Bird offense led the conference. From their Fuente was hired in February of 2007 by Gary Patterson and TCU. Since then, he has developed into the quarterbacks coach and offensive coordinator.

Making a Name for Himself

Justin Fuente lit up the scoreboard for Union High School in the 90’s. Now the former Oklahoma Sooner and Murray State quarterback is the offensive coordinator at TCU.
In 1992, Bill Blankenship took over at Union High School as the football coach. Blankenship had a very advanced offensive scheme that incorporated throwing the football more than most. When he first saw a soon-to-be sophomore named Justin Fuente, Blankenship knew he had the right kid for his offense.
Fuente broke every Union passing record and still holds some of those records today. He led the 1994 Union Redskins to the state championship game against Midwest City and was a consensus All-State and Player of the Year honoree. Fuente then signed to play for the Oklahoma Sooners.
“Coaching takes you in so many different directions. I am glad to be in a great situation in Fort Worth.”
When asked about his development as a player and coach, Fuente always refers back to his time at Union. “I learned so much from Coach Blankenship and I always knew that if I was not going to play professionally, I would immediately get into coaching.”
Blankenship started the Union program with Fuente at quarterback and built the foundation for what the south Tulsa juggernaut program is today. To this day, Fuente has been the only three-year starting quarterback at Union since his time. With Fuente’s development as a coach, it will only be a matter of time until we will see him with his own head-coaching job in college football. Justin and wife, Jenny, live in Fort Worth with their daughter Cecilia Mae.

This is YOUR magazine Eastern Oklahoma. Keep the stories coming and let us know what we need to do
to make our product even better during the next five years. Take a look at all the great covers we have produced and tell us which one was your favorite at Oklahoma@VYPE.com.

The Anatomy of a VYPE Cover Many readers ask us what goes into the decision making of a VYPE cover and how it is produced. Well there are a few criteria that we can lay out for you. 1. Relevant content to the season of sports. 2. Deserved notoriety for the cover athlete(s).

3. School participation. We want to make sure and cover as many teams as possible. Once we have determined the cover, we build a feature around the team or athletes on the cover. We then set up a photo shoot and we have to give credit to the accessibility of the schools to help us with this. We pick our best photographers to lay the setting and work with our editors in how we want the cover looking. Photos are taken, processed, proofed, and picked. We then tie in the title of the cover with the feature of the team or athlete. And we finally piece together the rest of the titles for the cover and the magazines sections we have highlighted. We hand it off to our Art Director Chance Calvert and let his team go to work. And walla!!! A Cover is born.

Bradley fits the mold of a VYPE Coverboy and always gives credit to his team and coaches for putting him in positions to succeed. Humbleness is a virtue that attracts fans and VYPE readers alike and those athletes who are proud, humble, hard working, and are made of character make for the best VYPE covers.

This month, what better way to celebrate the VYPE 5th anniversary cover with an athlete that has graced it before and is more than deserving. Broken Arrow quarterback Archie Bradley. The University of Oklahoma commitment is leading his Tiger squad on the football field and has them primed for a playoff run. Bradley, who many regard as one of the best quarterbacks in the state, also doubles as one of the best baseball players in the state. He has committed to play both football and baseball at OU, but has a great chance of being drafted in the MLB draft.

Eastern Oklahoma Bixby Spartan Though the Spartan is a relatively common mascot, the one in Bixby comes fully equipped with a top-of-the-line costume. Spartans are known throughout the world as some of the most vicious and cunning warriors. Hailing from Sparta, Greece, these heroes lived completely by their sword and shield. A good reference to the Spartan warriors is the 2008 film 300. The Bixby Spartan has been seen pumping up the Bixby faithful at every Friday night football game. Holland Hall Dutch Perhaps one of the more intriguing mascots is the Holland Hall Dutch. Formally the Dutchmen, Holland Hall switched to a more politically correct reference to the warriors from Holland. To accommodate all the students of the school. The Flyin’ Dutch take their name quite literally as their football team has been lighting up the scoreboard all season. Rumor has it that Captain Dutch is modeled after long-time athletic director Charlie Brown.
F E AT U R E numbers, and with the help of William Couch, convinced the federal government to open the unassigned land for the Land Run. The famous “Boomers” were recognized nationwide. Woodward High School adopted the nickname and have since been the same kind of everpersistent battlers on the gridiron.
Three Rivers Muskogee Roughers
Northwest Oklahoma Alva Goldbugs Ah yes, the Alva Goldbug. What is a Goldbug? Does anyone know? We did some digging and found that perhaps there is a reference to the short story written by Edgar Allen Poe. Apparently a 1920’s principal was a big fan of Poe’s and enjoyed awarding excellence in the classroom and activities with a Goldbug sticker. The students of the high school began referring to themselves as “Bugs.” The Goldbug, a symbol of excellence, was then taken as a mascot after the 19020’s by the Alva football team. The name stuck and here we are today. Then again, that is just legend. If anyone has a different story, let us know at Oklahoma@vype.com
“There’s nothing tougher than a Rougher.” The old saying goes. Prior to 1970, there were two schools in Muskogee. Central High School and Manual High School. Both integrated in 1970. In 1925, Central won a state title and were known for being a tough group while playing without helmets, giving the high school football team the nickname “Roughers.” Manuel’s mascot was the Bulldog prior to the 1970 merger. With this, the Rougher mascot is portrayed as an Oklahoma oilrig roughneck with a bulldog face. This mascot and name have been trademarked and cannot be used by any institution across the nation. The Muskogee area takes a lot of pride in their heritage and what the mascot signifies.

After debates on whether to name the mascot after the diamond back rattle snakes in the area, or the coal mining black diamonds, the school finally decided on the Black Diamonds and the first time they were mentioned was in the Sallisaw Sequoyah County Democrat Newspaper in January of 1925 as the Black Diamonds. This year’s 4A squad started off a little slow, but has since emerged as a contender in 4A.
Central Oklahoma Bishop McGuinness Fighting Irish Adopted in 1955, the Fighting Irish was deemed the Bishop McGuinness nickname. Perhaps one of the most famous nicknames across the country in large part to Notre Dame University. McGuinness also selected the “Clancy” as the mascot in 1955. Tradition ensued as Bishop McGuinness has been a mainstay in athletic competitions in Oklahoma since the 80’s, winning 75 state titles since. The Fighting Irish of McGuinness have a chance to be a contender in 4A again this year. Putnam City North Panther

The Panther was developed as the school was developed in 1978. Perhaps one of the most charismatic of all Oklahoma high school mascots, the PC North Panther is always good entertainment at athletic events. Perhaps an unoriginal mascot, the caliber of entertainment and costume make up for it. Sporting a ferocious head and razor-sharp nails (Not real), the Panther can pounce.

A new facility welcomed the Broken Arrow Tigers this year. The athletic building is state-of-the-art and well overdue for the Tigers. The locker room and meeting rooms are done as well as the bathrooms. The team begins to filter in and players are gearing up with iPods and ear buds plugged in. It’s a couple of hours before kickoff and players are already pumping each other up and preparing for one of the biggest games of their lives.
50
Trainers arrive and begin tapping ankles and wrists. Several players stretch themselves out on the floor in front of their lockers. Coaches are walking through the room asking players if they’re ready. Shoulder pads are going on. The pop of pads being hit by clinched fists fills the air. A few guys are getting louder and some of the leaders are talking to their teammates. “Are you ready?” Asked one of the captains to an underclassman. Without hesitation he replies “YES! Let’s go!” Coaches have gathered position players together and begin going over assignments. Most of the players are now completely dressed and ready. They head out of the

locker room for the field. Forty-five minutes from game time, on the field, running offense while Union is on the north end of Memorial Stadium doing the same thing. One last huddle on the field (player led) and it’s back to the locker room.

The mood inside is different. Heavy. Heads are down; players are trying to focus on the task at hand. It’s Union. A non-district game but a big game this early in the season. Head coach Steve Spavital gives his pregame speech. Players are focused, listening to what their leader is saying. The Chaplin brings words of encouragement to the locker room as heads bow and a prayer is said. This is the moment. Just before you take the field. This is when you want to throw up then run through a brick wall. The players exit the locker room like a herd of cattle. Once outside they spread out and prepare to run through the Broken Arrow helmet in the southwest corner of the endzone.

for a minute. Then they break into groups. Linemen are going through their checks and responsibilities. The defensive backfield is covering their assignments while the offensive backs are talking about adjustments and things they need to work on. Some players receive fluids to prevent cramps while others listen intently to the adjustments being made. One final word from the head coach. His message was simple. Continue to play hard and you will win this game. His prediction of Union’s first possession of the second half being their best was true. After a couple of minutes in the third quarter the game was tied, 21-21.
52
With the final few minutes ticking off the clock and a Union victory well in hand, the Tigers continue to battle for every yard and the respect of their opponents. There’s nothing tougher than losing a game at home. As the last of the players walk through the line shaking the hands of their opponents, the Tiger coaching staff congratulates Kirk Fridrich and the Redskins. Coach Spavital gathers his players on the field. As each player takes a knee they look to their coach for words of wisdom. “You have to respect that team right there (pointing to Union). They came into a hostile environment and kicked our butts,” he continues, “now how will we respond? We have a lot to work on, but we also showed improvement in some areas. Take the weekend off. Everyone rest up and we’ll see you Monday.” Quarterback Archie Bradley said, “This is a non-district game. We really wanted this game, but now we’re going to focus on district play and making the playoffs. We’ll be okay.” The Broken Arrow staff welcomed the VYPE cameras as we photographed during the entire game. VYPE would like to thank the faculty, players and especially the coaches for allowing us to invade their space behind closed doors.

As far as high school goes, when I was a freshman pitching in the state semi-finals against Tuttle is definitely one of the games that sticks out in my mind as being one of the toughest. Can anyone hang with Booker T. Washington? East Central did until the end of the fourth quarter. The Hornets are playing well and appear to be the Class 5A favorite. Collinsville has a defense that hates to give up points and that defense will carry them in some games. Bishop Kelley has struggled early, but expect the Comets to right the ship. The McAlester Buffaloes may have the two seed wrapped up unless Memorial can shock a few teams and slide into that spot. In Class 5A-4 the Central Braves are playing as well as anyone. East Central might be considered the favorite their despite dropping the game to the Hornets. Grove and Pryor have a shot at the playoffs as well as Coweta. Claremore is a little confusing right now, but if they get some things worked out they could come alive and upset a few teams.
VYPE.COM
After their win over Union in the Backyard Bowl, Jenks appears to be the clear favorite in the class. Union was able to bounce back against the Broken Arrow Tigers, on the road, for an impressive win, but Broken Arrow isn’t done yet. Muskogee picked up a huge win over Southmoore late in the fourth quarter. That win will go a long way in determining who will grab the three and four seeds in District 6A-3. Jenks will battle Broken Arrow on the 29th of October at Jenks. In District 6A-4 Union is the clear favorite despite a valiant effort from Bixby. The newcomers have shown they can play with the big boys and should have some wins under their belt and possibly grab that four seed. Enid and Jonathan Burton are playing solid as well. Look for Bartlesville, Stillwater and Owasso to fight for the three and four seeds in that district. This one could get ugly.

With non-district games out of the way, teams can now focus on what really matters. District play is here, who are the early favorites heading into October?

Oologah has all the pieces to not only make it to the playoffs, but to make a deep run and possibly play for a gold ball. The Wagoner Bulldogs and Prince McJunkins may have something to say about Oologah’s run. Catoosa and Miami have big games ahead, but could possibly play the role of spoiler to Oologah and Wagoner. And don’t count out Vinita just yet. They have a young, but talented club. Broken Bow appears to have a handle on District 4A-4. Hilldale and Fort Gibson are playing sound football right now, but look for Sallisaw and Muldrow to surprise someone. Broken Bow cruised through nondistrict play and won their first district game at home against Muldrow.
Class 3A is mixed up with a ton of talented teams, any of which could be the team to beat. Odds on favorite, Cascia Hall were beat in nondistrict play, but have refocused and made the necessary adjustments to make another run at a title. Sperry and Berryhill appear to be playoff teams in 3A-5 while Verdigris, Inola and Metro Christian may have spots locked up in 3A-6. Roland has an outstanding defense coming out
of 3A-7, but look for Checotah and Henryetta to make some waves there. Another tough district to win is 3A-8. Spiro, Stigler and Valliant have stepped up to take an early lead in district play.
Considered by many to be the toughest class to win, Class 2A is yet again stacked with loaded football teams. Coming out of 2A-5 is Morris who boosts one of the best defenses in the class. Okemah and Meeker are also playing excellent football early. In 2A-6 look for Vian and Talihina, but Hartshorne and Wilburton may have something to say about the district when it’s all said and done. Lincoln Christian is still a powerhouse coming out of 2A-7. Chelsea has surprised some people with their play while Newkirk and Chouteau have looked good early. Caney Valley may be the surprise team to watch. This group of players believe they can hang with anyone and their first three wins proves that Adair and Commerce are living proof defense can win championships. Also look for Colcord and Kansas in 2A-8. And one more team to mention from that district, Salina. They may sneak in the back door!
Savanna got off to a 4-0 start while Drumright, Elmore City, Foyil, Afton and Oklahoma Union are all playing excellent football. Never count out Woodland out of A-7 or Quinton from A-6. Porter may be the best 2-2 team in the state after the first four games of the season.
The Dewar Dragons were the only undefeated team in District B-3 after four games. District B-4 was another story. Depew, Summit Christian and Welch all had perfect records heading into week five. Keep an eye on Kiefer and South Coffeyville in district B-4 and Gans and Allen in B-3. Class B is a monster of a class to win. If you go all the way, you earned it!

And then we pray for Christ to lead us through the temptations. And, of course, He always does.”
“It happens almost everyday for all of us, something happens at school or at home to challenge your beliefs and your influence,” said Talia. “And that’s when I can trust Him most to walk me through any situation.”

Cascia Hall Cheer Makes Some Noise
Holland Hall
Dutch
Holland Hall Field Hockey Festival Holland Hall hosted the Holland Hall Field Hockey Festival September 17th and 18th. In the Dutch’s first game they defeated De Sion from Kansas City 4-0. Sherene Iskander led the team with two goals and Lily Swab and Cameron Keylor each added one. On Saturday, Holland Hall defeated St. Stephens 1-0. Swab and Iskander each scored goals. St. Stephens had defeated the Dutch earlier in the year, but several members of the varsity team were missing. Our second game on Saturday was the toughest one, against rival Casady. Casady controlled the ball for most of the game but the Holland Hall defense (Lindsey Bach, Emily Dudney, Haileigh Burr, Alex Stumps and Ann Stumps) and Goalie Eryn McCarver did a phenomenal job keeping the ball out of their goal. When the offense got the ball they made the most of it and scored a goal (Cameron Keylor) early in the second half and held Casady scoreless in rout to a 1-0 win. The Middle School and JV teams have also had great success that weekend and all of the coaches were very proud of all of the girls.
Cross Country Off and Running Holland Hall started out their season at the TU Hurricane Festival. The boys ran two miles and girls ran one mile, with everyone running by grade. The Dutch won the freshman boys race and had several runners finish in the top 10: Senior Race Boys: Taylor Moult (2nd - 10:09) Junior Race Girls: Cindy Saliba (8th - 6:14) Junior Race Boys: Mitch Hill (8th - 11:10)

Six Broken Arrow Students Recognized as National Merit Semifinalists Six Broken Arrow High School Seniors, Hunter Ash, Alexander Cowden, Richard Fitzhugh, Gregory Jones, Catherine Thomas and Erin Westbrook have been named National Merit Semifinalists by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,400 National Merit Scholarships, worth more than $36 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, semifinalists must fulfill several requirements to advance to the Finalist level of the competition. Cowden is the son of Roger and Christina Samford; Fitzhugh is the son of Alex Saravia and Gail HR Saravia; Hunter is the son of Robert and Eve Ash; Jones is the son of Kent and Holly Jones; Thomas is the daughter of Gary and Sheril Thomas; Westbrook is the daughter of Greg and Melissa Westbrook. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2011 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2009 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test, which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. The number of semifinalists in a state is proportional to the state’s percentage of the national total of graduating seniors To become a finalist, a semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn sat scores that confirm the student’s earlier performance on the qualifying test. The semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s essay and information about the Semifinalist’s
participation and leadership in school and community activities. Three types of National Merit Scholarships will be offered in the spring of 2011. Every finalist will compete for one of 2,500 National Merit $2,500 Scholarships that will be awarded on a state representational basis. About 1,000 corporate-sponsored Merit Scholarship awards will be provided by approximately 250 corporations and business organizations. Youth Football League In Tulsa Continues To Have Fun
E
very Saturday during the fall in Tulsa, you can always hear the sounds of quarterbacks calling signals, cheerleaders and parents shouting encouragement as players on the other side make the tackle and the whistle blows. More than 40 teams lineup each weekend to enjoy youth football action in the AYFCO with gridiron action at Hicks Park, East Central High School and other football sites around Tulsa.
Now in its third season, the American Youth Football Conference of Oklahoma continues to grow at a rapid pace. Why all the excitement and fun? “It’s really simple, we’re kid friendly,” said Keith Ward, one of the AYFCO’s directors. “Our league is based on family and tradition rather than just the weight of the player that forces a third grader to play against fourth graders.”
Entry fees for the post season event are $200 per team with no per player fees. For more information contact Keith Ward (918.378.0263) or Tracy Robinson (918.691.0946) or go on the web at route66pigskinclassic.com. VYPE. C O M

The growth of the league is evident in the number of players. “Our teams are made up of kids who live in the same area, or play on the same baseball and basketball teams,” said Tracy Robinson, league commissioner of the AYFCO. “We offer our kids competitive football from kindergarten through the seventh grade. In addition to Tulsa, our league includes Sand Springs, Broken Arrow and Muskogee.”
