As Good As It Gets

The MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl is the states best rivalry and the boys from Jenks and Union can’t wait to take the field. Is it safe to say that football fans in Green Country are spoiled? I know I am! Another edition of the MidFirst Bank Backyard Bowl is upon us and after talking to the players I can’t wait for this thing to kick off! It is the states best rivalry. The scores, the history, the championships, all contribute to making this one of the best games in the country. But it’s really the players that make it worth watching. Names like Langer, Kollmorgen and Risenhoover from Jenks and Pearson, Walser and Stanley from Union are all names you will hear on September 10th at Tuttle Stadium. Names from the past like Calmus, Mahan, Jones, Dillard, Beeler and Engles for Jenks and Blankenship, Snider, Spavital, Chadwick and Moore for Union are all still burned in the memory of fans, coaches and players that have been a part of this rivalry over the years. Two pieces of advice…buy your tickets several days before the kickoff and never leave the game early! Last December we ran a flashback photo of the 1917 Ramona High School football team. We return to the exact spot where that photo was taken to meet the 2010 Caney Valley Trojans.

Sand Springs High School – July 2009 Deaton was considered one of the top prospects in the state of Oklahoma his senior year at Charles Page High School in Sand Springs. Deaton finished high school early and joined the Oklahoma State football team in 2010. Deaton continues to impress the coaches and is working hard for playing time.

Norman High School – Nov. 2006 Broyles was featured on the first cover for Central Oklahoma in November of 2006. Broyles finished his high school career with 79 receptions for 1,688 yards. Broyles now plays for the Oklahoma Sooners and led Sooners in receiving last season.

Rotnie Clarke

Verdigris High School – Nov. 2007 Clarke became the all-time scorer in Oklahoma high school basketball history and was highly recruited by school from coast to coast. Clarke decided to take his talents to the University of Arkansas. Clarke is expected to become one of the top scorers for the Razorbacks this season.

Yukon High School – May 2009 James led the Millers deep into the playoffs in 2009. Drafted in the first round of the Major League Baseball draft (18th overall) by the Florida Marlins, James has already made an impact by in Greensboro, North Carolina pitching for the Single-A Grasshoppers.

Dewar High School – March 2009 Lewis came out of the small school of Dewar and burst on the scene at the University of Oklahoma as a special teams player and linebacker. Lewis is currently playing for the Sooners where he’s expected to start at linebacker.

Dallas Bailey

Catoosa High School – Feb. 2009 Bailey won four state championships while at Catoosa compiling a record of 130-5 over his high school career. Bailey was an ASICS All-American as a senior and finished his senior year as the top ranked 160-pound wrestler in the nation. Bailey is now a redshirt freshman at Oklahoma State University.

Peter Kozma

Owasso High School – March 2007 Kozma played high school baseball for the Owasso Rams and was voted to the Louisville Slugger AllAmerican team as a senior. He averaged .557 at the plate, which was a team record. Kozma was drafted in the first round of the 2007 Major League Baseball draft by the St. Louis Cardinals.

Samantha Woodward

Edmond Memorial – Jan. 2007 Woodward was an eight time state champion while at Edmond Memorial and set the national high school record in the 100 meters in 2005. As a freshman at Stanford University Woodward earned six All-American honors and was part of a record setting 800-meter relay team at the Pac-10 Championships.

Xavier Henry

Putnam City High School – Nov. 2008 Henry led the Putnam City Pirates to back-to-back state championships in high school then spent one season at Kansas University. Henry was considered one of the best freshmen in the country and was drafted by the Memphis Grizzlies in the first round of the NBA draft.

Blake Griffin

Oklahoma Christian School – Dec. 2006 Griffin won four state championships while playing for Oklahoma Christian School. In 2006 he was named to the McDonald’s All-American. While playing for the University of Oklahoma Griffin averaged 14.7 points per game with 9.1 rebounds. Griffin received numerous honors while at Oklahoma and was drafted in the first round as the number one overall pick going to the Los Angeles Clippers in 2009.

SEPTEMBER 2010 Mazzio’s Corporation and VYPE have teamed up to grant a $2,000 Scholarship for one boy and one girl to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy and girl will be elected the Mazzio’s Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to scholarship. easternoklahoma@VYPE.com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page.

Brandi Schueler

Bartlesville High School Brandi Schueler is a senior at Bartlesville High School where she plays varsity fast pitch softball. Schueler recently helped the Lady Bruins to a third place finish in the gold bracket of the Broken Arrow softball tournament. Schueler is considered by many coaches to be an outstanding third baseman and an excellent hitter at the plate. Schueler is expected to play softball at the next level, but is undecided on a school.

Dino Teague East Central High School Dino Teague is a senior at East Central High School. Teague has demonstrated his commitment to his team by working hard in the off-season and two-a-days. He is committed to being one of the best football players on the squad. The 6-foot1, 180-pound receiver/defensive back is expected to have a major impact on the field for the Cardinals. Teague is working hard on the field and in the classroom to make his dream of playing at the next level come true.

Bishop Kelley senior Alex Powell is a two-year starter for Comets football team. At six-foot-four and 245 pounds, Alex presents opponents a major challenge no matter whether he’s playing tight end on offense or rushing the quarterback from defensive end. Powell is also an outstanding student having scored a 31 on the ACT exam. While going through final preparations for the 2010 football season, VYPE caught up with Alex Powell of Bishop Kelley High School to answer questions for Triple Play. Dominique Franks – Union – Football Oklahoma – Atlanta Falcons In 2005, Dominique was the Tulsa World Oklahoma Player of the Year and helped the Redskins to two 6A state titles. He recorded seven interceptions and returned three for touchdowns as a senior and also scored three touchdowns on kickoff returns during his senior season. Coached by Bill Blankenship at Union, Franks chose the University of Oklahoma and was a two-time, All-Conference selection in ’08 and ’09 for the Sooners. Franks was a shutdown corner at OU and was drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 5th round. Franks is already in line to make the team and come in on nickel coverage situations this year. Phillip Dillard – Jenks – Football Nebraska – NY Giants

Phillip is regarded as one of the best linebackers to come from Jenks High School. Joining the likes of Jay Henry and Rocky Calmus. Dillard was one of the nation’s top linebacker prospects after earning Oklahoma All-State honors for two consecutive seasons at Jenks. Dillard led his team to a Class 6A championship in 2003 and a runnerup finish in 2004, when he had more than 120 tackles, including 75 solo stops and three sacks, along with seven pass breakups. In his final two seasons playing for Allen Trimble, Dillard totaled more than 200 tackles. In addition to his all-state honors from nearly every media outlet, Dillard was named the Jim Thorpe Association Oklahoma Defensive Player of the Year as a junior in 2003. Dillard continued on to Nebraska where he earned Big 12 AllConference honors and helped the Cornhuskers rebound under coach Bo Pelini. Dillard was drafted by the New York Giants and has already impressed in camp this season.

An All-State second team selection at defensive end following the 2006 football season for Jenks, Laptad was a two-year, two-way starter at defensive end/tight end and helped the Trojans earn the state championship trophy by collecting four unassisted tackles with 3.5 quarterback sacks in the title game in 2006. Jake ended his senior season with 12.5 sacks, 39 solo tackles and 42 assisted stops. Helped Jenks compile a 34-4 overall record his last three years at the school. Signed with Kansas and has started for two years for the Jayhawks. And intracal part of the 2007 Orange Bowl squad, Laptad has made All-Conference Honerable Mention honors the last two years and will be the defensive captain in his seniro year in 2010.

Gus Jones – Wagoner – Football NSU Gus “The Bus” Jones was an unstoppable force for the Bulldogs in 2008. He was a PrepStar All-Midlands Region and was voted district most valuable player and Oklahoma All-State in 2008. Jones recorded 138 tackles his senior year along with five forced fumbles and six sacks while rushing for 1,016 yards and 26 touchdowns. Jones signed and redshirted for the Oklahoma Sooners in 2009 and has since transferred to NSU where he is expected to start right away for the Riverhawks in 2010. Nick Sidorakis – Jenks – Basketball Oklahoma State University

Sidorakis has developed a reputation with the Cowboys as a “whatever it takes” type of player. Sidorakis was an All-Stater at Jenks in 2007 where he started for four straight years under coach Clay Martin. Nick averaged 18ppg and seven rebounds in his senior year and has been a contributor for the Oklahoma State Cowboys since his freshman year. Nick was recently praised for giving up his scholarship for his senior year at OSU. Clarke is the all-time leading scorer in Oklahoma high school basketball history while averaging over 30ppg throughout his four-year career. He led Verdigris to a state championship in 2007 and committed to the Razorbacks. A former VYPE Coverboy, Clarke has started 60 of 61 games for the Razorbacks in his first two seasons. Last year as a sophomore, Clarke averaged over 15ppg. Coming into his junior year, Clarke will be looked upon to help lead the Razorbacks in 2009-2010.

Matt Romine – Union – Football Notre Dame Romine was a consensus All-Stater in 2006. Rated the best player in Oklahoma by Rivals.com in his senior year for the Redskins, Romine helped lead the team the 2004 and 2005 Class 6A state championship. After signing for Notre Dame, Romine has been a very talented part of the offensive line for the Irish. This year, in his senior season, Romine will finally get the nod to start at left tackle. Hillary Bach – Holland Hall – Softball Arizona State University Bach annihilated the competition form 2005-2008 for the Dutch. She was named a three-time All-Conference player in the SPC and led the Dutch to a runner-up finish in 2008. Hillary immediately made an impact for the Sun Devils as she started 41 games and ended with a 31-11

Kasha attended Chelsea High School and played under head coach Daryl Ping. She earned four letters in softball and was named all-conference all four years and conference MVP and pitcher of the year two years as well as Named Gatorade Oklahoma Softball Player of the Year her senior year by RISE Magazine. She helped lead the Dragons to a 42-0 record by throwing a perfect game in the state championship game in 2008. At Wichita State, Kasha appeared in 47 games with 36 starts in the circle for the Shockers and her 47 appearances were tops in the Missouri Valley Conference. Kasha threw 15 complete games with three shutouts and one combined shutout. Kasha gets her work done in the classroom as well. She was named to the AD’s Honor Roll following the Fall 2008 semester.

Eric gained nearly 1,600 yards last year and scored 28 touchdowns. The Jaguars will be looking to Thornton to be a big cog in their offensive machine.

I wanted to email in and ask you about holding calls in football. I’m confused on exactly what constitutes holding. So offensive linemen can grab the jersey as long as they are inside on the chest, but they can not grab outside on the shoulders, is that right? This is one of those calls that could be flagged on every play in my opinion. Yes, holding can be called on almost every play, however holding is one of the most difficult penalties for an official to master. In my opinion holding should always be called based on the severity, and the kind of affect it has on the play. For example, if a sweep is going left and the right tackle is holding the defensive end, who is obviously out of the play, that may not be a good time to call holding. Here are some factors that officials look at when calling holding. One thing to always remember is holding should be called at the point of attack. Here are some things to consider.

• Did the blocker gain an unfair advantage from the hold? • Did the defender have his jersey stretched or have to reach for the ball carrier with one arm? • Was the disengagement between the holder and the person who was being held legal? • Was he taken in a direction by the hold to an undesired location? • Did the defender give up on his pursuit by having a step taken away from him as the result of a hold?

I’ve yet to find anyone that can answer this question so I thought I would give you a chance. In fast pitch softball why don’t the umpires call the pitches for illegal pitches when their feet get outside the circle? This is never called and they let these pitchers get away with it all the time. Hope you can shed some light on the subject. I have never heard this question. The pitching circle, is used for the “lookback” rule, primarily with that said, I have found nothing in the rulebook, stating getting out of the circle is an illegal pitch. As for why it is not called, it would not be a primary focus by umpires, so they probably wouldn’t see it. The plate umpire is looking at the delivery and pitch, the field umpire is looking for a check swing and runners, so they just don’t see what happens on the follow through. I know this doesn’t answer your question, but might shed a little light as to why it isn’t called.

A Tulsa native for the last 23 years, Hurley and his family (Wife Dana, son Ryan 25, daughter Kori 22) have made Tulsa their home and after watching his kids grow up at Metro Christian Academy, Hurley continues to support schools all over the area. “Community support is something that is very important to me,” said Hurley. “My business is such an integral part of the community and it is fitting that we always continue to show that involvement. hen putting together our Backyard bowl issue, we tend to always find a theme. This year, we are going with two separate story lines. First, Jenks will be highlighted with their record-breaking running back

Zack Langer. Then we will look at the secret about the Redskins. After graduating six D-1 players, not

many people knew how good this team would be, but with former receiver Kale Pearson taking over at quarterback, the

Skins may have the best signal caller they have had in recent memory. Couple that with a team full of very talented players who haven’t gotten their chance, and the Skins might explode into a team of great talent, leadership, and discipline. All the makings of another state championship run.

Move Over Jenks Greats, Langer is Back For Another Run at the Title

After obliterating the Jenks single season and single game touchdown records, the humble Langer returns for his senior year. When asked about the records he now holds at Jenks, Langer turns sheepish and gives glory while commending the offensive line that got him there.

Langer rushed for 2,346 yards on the season and broke the singleseason touchdown record with 38 and the single-game touchdown record with eight against Bartlesville on October 23rd. Both were longstanding Jenks records held by Richie Calmus.

Overtaking Richie Calmus and being mentioned in the same breathe as Rocky Calmus, KeJuan Jones, and Chris Atkins has really been surreal for Langer. The senior has no intentional purpose to overtake records, but just wants his team to win and if it means rushing for a plethora of yards and touchdowns, then it is all part of whatever it takes.

1994 – Jenks survived a 23-point second quarter orchestrated by legendary Union quarterback Justin Fuente and running back Eric Bernard. Fuente threw for 150 yards and two touchdowns but Jerry Wisne and company had the last laugh as the Trojans held on to a 37-30 victory. Richie Calmus also chipped in with 152 yards rushing. Union ended up losing a heartbreaker to Midwest City in the State Finals.

1995 – Jenks taillback Josh Fidler rushed for 116 yards and three first-half touchdowns as the Trojans blitzed Union 28-7. Redskin quarterback Gerren Comeaux completed just 2 of 14 passes for 30 yards Chris Claybon had

1996 – With 181 yards and three touchdowns, Josh Fidler gave the Skins all they could handle in a 42-14 blowout of Union. Rocky Calmus spelled Fidler with 136 yards and three more touchdowns. Sherard Poteete threw three interceptions as two were picked off by Matt McCoy. Jenks went on to avenge an overtime semifinal loss to Midwest City in 1995 to claim the state title. 1997 – Jenks’ Legion of Doom defense led by Rocky Calmus, Jason Lohr, Justin Dixon,

Sean Mahan and Brett Butler limited the high flying Redskins to 95 total yards before a crowd of 15,200 at Union-Tuttle Stadium. Calmus carried the load on offense with two touchdowns and led the Trojans to a 21-11 victory. Jenks went on to win a second straight state title, 56-8, over Yukon. 1998 – 9,000 spectators packed HunterDwelley to witness the most exciting UnionJenks game in the series. In a back-and-forth scoring fest, Danny Morris rushed for 209 yards and six touchdowns and Josh Blankenship threw for 230 yards and two touchdowns as the Redskins ended a six-year losing streak against the Trojans, 55-45. With

an offensive linemen that we will look to step. Our offensive line is young but they are looking really good.” Ben Risenhoover, Aaron Farris, and Brandon Waggoner have the job of protecting Kollmorgen and opening holes for Langer.

Allan Trimble will also look to senior gunslinger Sawyer Kollmorgan, who is impressing everyday and will be looked upon to rip defenses apart for cheating on the run-game in stopping Langer. Kollmorgan has Backyard Bowl experience along with Langer and he looks forward to taking on the challenge. “As a kid I remember going to all the Jenks-Union games. We would make signs for the players and write them good luck cards,” said Kollmorgan. “This game always goes down to the wire.”

Langer agreed about the talismanic affect of the Backyard Bowl. Last year’s game served as the breakout performance for Langer and he never looked back. “Everyone knows it is an awesome game. You never know what is going to happen and it tends to make the best out of all of us.”

1999 – State Finals - A sellout crowd of 40,385 packed Skelly Stadium to watch two of the nation’s best teams square off for a finals rematch. Union dominated the stats by outgaining the Trojans 333-175 in yardage, but the opportunistic Trojan defense was able to keep

2000 – The greatest Jenks-Union showdown came at Skelly Stadium where a crowd of 34,000 watched Kejuan Jones take an 80-yard pass to the house as time expired, giving the Trojans a 41-37 victory. The future Sooner had 307 yards of total offense and five touchdowns

1999 – The rivalry blew-up after the ’98 season and 16,000 people packed Union-Tuttle Stadium to watch the Redskins defeat Jenks 27-24 in overtime. Union quarterback Tyler Gooch found Jay Felker in the end zone to put an end to one the best Union-Jenks showdowns ever.

the Redskins out of the end zone just enough to preserve a 14-7 victory. Jenks tailback Kejuan Jones rushed for 108 yards and one TD on 17 attempts. Union held the Trojans to just nine yards after the first quarter but couldn’t seem to get enough from their offense. Jenks took the state title for the fourth consecutive time behind legacies Scott McCoy, Todd Fidler and Brandon Lohr.

1998 – State Championship The Trojans avenged the early season loss to the Redskins by claiming their third straight state title in a 41-28 triumph over the Skins in front of 28,000 spectators at Lewis Field in Stillwater. Ben Bowling had the game of his life accounting for 345 total yards and four touchdowns. Sophomore Bobby Klinck also pitched in with 134 yards rushing. The Trojan defense was efficient enough in holding Blankenship, Morris, Michael Johnson, Austin Chadwick and the rest of Union’s

record-setting offense in check.

over 1,100 yards of offense, the two teams had fans going crazy on the warm September evening.

Kollmorgan talked about the great players before him as if they were inspirations. “There have been so many great players for Jenks including Rocky Calmus, KeJuan Jones, Andrew Brewer, Tanner Shuck, Chris Atkins, and Mark Ginther. They always played hard and would make big plays during the game. But no matter how big the name, it is always the lesser known players who tend to sway the outcome of this game.”

The Secret’s Out

These Redskins have a chance to do something that has never been done before. Win three state championships in a row. Understand that this doesn’t come easy and if you asked head coach Kirk Fridrich, he would tell you that it takes even more work than it took the previous two years. But this class of seniors is up for the challenge and has been working harder than ever before. Led by the tenacious Kale Pearson. The Redskins receiver in 2009 was the X-factor for the Skins last year. Sparking the team when a big play was needed. In last year’s state championship game, the Trojans scored a second consecutive touchdown in the second half to pull within 18-points. On the ensuing kickoff, Pearson took the kickoff 90 yards to silence any sort of comeback and dashed the hopes of the Trojan faithful.

Pearson leads a team of seniors that include receiver Christian Hood, offensive lineman Chance Haley, Blake Jones (Who was moved to tackle from tight end), running back Jalen Hearron, defensive lineman Corbin Stall, and Brentom Todd. When you couple outstanding juniors like Javon Bowler and two-year starter Blace Walser, with the senior Richard Stanley in the defensive backfield. There are also some players who Pearson cites that you may not know about. “Stephon Weaver and Gabe Osifeso are senior receivers who is emerging as a great player,” said Pearson. Blace Walser, who led the Skins in tackles as a sophomore last year, cites a good corp of linebackers that are only juniors and will learn fast with Walser’s experience. “We have Kyle Cruthchmer lining up at with me. He’s a national champion wrestler and a real good player,” said Walser. “And watch out for Blayke Elder. He has speed and the three of us should all work well together as long as we keep developing.”

Pearson is geared up and ready to roll for his senior year. “Just like any other senior I want to go out the right way. But we have some big shoes to fill and want to continue the tradition we have here at Union.”

Walser loves the atmosphere and the great tradition that the Jenks-Union rivalry brings. “This rivalry is special because neither team is willing to give an inch. It really does not matter who we are playing, but if the opponent is from Jenks it makes you wanna win that much more.” Come the end of September, some of these new faces for the Redskins may be household names. Since Union plays perhaps one of the tougher non-district schedules in the state, Fridrich and

in an epic battle against the Skins. Tyler Gooch and Trinity Dawson led the charge for Union but it wasn’t enough in the end. 2000 – State Finals Another huge crowd of 32,000 showed up at Skelly Stadium to watch the Redskins and Trojans duke it out for the third straight year. The Trojans took a 24-0 halftime lead. Tyler Gooch and Jerome Janet desperately struggled to bring the Skins back in the second half before Union fell to the Trojans 31-12. 2001 – The Union-Jenks regular season rivalry was cancelled due to 9-11.

2002 – A crowd of 26,000 saw Jenks take an early 12-2 lead over the Skins, but with Spencer McIllwain nursing a groin pull, Kurt Quillman became the unlikely hero with 75 yards rushing and two touchdowns. Union came back to defeat the Trojans 33-12. Jake Spavital also connected on a 30-yard score. Union went on to win their first state title in over 40 years by upending Broken Arrow.

2003 – The most lopsided game in the great Union-Jenks rivalry was witnessed by 13,000 fans who braved torrential rainfall to watch a healthy Union squad dominate the Trojans 37-0. The Skins, led by the state’s best player in Zac Snider, along with Nathan Peterson and

Adam Blankenship shut Jenks out for the first time since 1984. Kurt Quillman led the Skins with 26 carries for 181 yards.

2003 State Semifinals – Freddie Carolina rushed for 177 yards and two touchdowns as Jenks avenged the early season shutout to the Redskins 14-12. A mash-unit of Redskins tried to pull off a comeback in the fourth quarter but came up short. Union was without Zac Snider, who was sidelined after a knee injury suffered the previous week. Nathan Peterson was also banged up as Jake Spavital’s valiant effort came up short. The Trojans won their seventh title in eight years.

All About the Running Game As cliché as it sounds, it is all about the running game for the Redskins and Trojans. The defensive front of Union has their hands full in stopping Langer and the Trojan rushing attack. This was a key to the state championship game for the Redskins. With Pearson taking over at quarterback, the Skins will rely heavily on Hearron to get the ground game going. If the Trojans young offensive line can develop rather quickly and open holes for Langer, then Jenks will have a big advantage.

Unknown Heroes This game has always brought out the best in the players, and there is always a relatively unknown star who emerges from the contest. Last year, no one really knew about Langer until he scampered for 135 yards and a couple of touchdowns. Trevor Staub is a defensive end for the Trojans and has the ability to make a huge impact. Also Matt McPheters who lines up on the other side of Staub. The receiving corp of the Skins with Hood and Weaver will have plenty of opportunities to make big plays. Also don’t forget about Osifeso. The senior has impressed in camp and in scrimmages and is looking to bust out against Jenks.

Turnovers Are Key Last year, Union turned the ball over five times that ultimately doomed the Skins. In the 23 games since 1994, the team that wins the turnover battle has gone on to win the game 81% of the time. (13-3). The remaining seven games, the two teams had the same amount of turnovers. Protecting the ball will be key and some of those unknown heroes we cited might be responsible for an interception or fumble recovery.

Leadership Kills There are equal amounts of leadership on both sides as Langer and Kollmorgan return on the Jenks offense and Pearson and Walser return for the Redskins. Stanley will also be key in the Redskin secondary as a senior leader. Jenks also has Trent Martin and Brandon Crump at linebacker who will be setting the example for the younger Trojans. 2006 – With 39 seconds left, Brandon Rogers fired a 34-yard TD pass to Brad Wondra that would have erased Jenks’ three-point lead and put Union ahead. However, before the pass was delivered, a penalty flag was tossed for illegal motion in the Redskins’ backfield. Jenks’ defense then held on the next three plays to

2005 – Isaac Norman scored on a 64-yard pass from Jake Strain with 18 seconds remaining to give Class 6A No. 2 Jenks a 4844 victory over top-ranked 6A Union in the Backyard Bowl before a crowd of 24,110 at Skelly Stadium. Jake Borgsmiller caught three TDs for Union while quarterback Casey Whorton threw for 197 yards and four TDs.

Oklahoma-bound Dominique Franks also had a 96-yard kickoff return for a TD. Tanner Shuck, Jake Laptad, and Tony Gillespie held on to keep the Redskins at bay for most of the second half. Union went on to win the 2005 state title game against Mustang in decisive fashion. This ended long-time Union coach Bill Blankenship’s era as the Skins coach.

2004 – State Finals For the fourth time in six years the Redskins and Trojans would face off in the 6A State Championship. Brad Glenn, a Union fullback who joined the squad at mid-season, stole the show with 189 yards of total offense and three touchdowns. Phillip Dillard and the Jenks

defense could not find an answer as Glenn seemed to slip out of the backfield to catch numerous passes and bulldoze his way into the end zone. Andrew Brewer and company were able to amass 332 yards of offense but that was not enough as Union finally beats Jenks in the state championship 27-17.

2004 – The Trojans held off a late Union push to beat the Redskins 17-13 before an estimated crowd of 25,000 at Skelly Stadium. Andrew Brewer and Freddie Carolina were the heroes for Jenks as they combined for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Phillip Dillard and the Trojan defense held Tony Moore and the Union offense to 267 yards.

This was Union’s coach Kevin Wright’s only test against Jenks before leaving the program at season’s end. Union had the edge over Jenks in yards, 300-264, and plays, 65-47. The Redskins, however, came away without any points on four of the five times they drove inside the Jenks 35. The total points scored were the fewest in the series since Union’s 6-3 win in 1988.

2007 – Union tailback Jeremy Smith and quarterback Brandon Rogers helped write another amazing chapter in the Redskins-Jenks football rivalry at the University of Tulsa’s Chapman Stadium. Smith rushed for 171 yards, including an overtime touchdown of 5 yards that was followed by the decisive extra-point kick by Tress Way to lift No. 2 Union over topranked Jenks 43-42 before a crowd of 20,578 in a battle of teams that have combined to win the last 11 Class 6A state titles. Rogers completed 15-of-21 passes for 168 yards and three TDs, and also had a 1-yard TD run while Mark Ginther was 17-of-22 for 287 yards and four TDs. Jenks running back Chris Adkins rushed for 208 yards and two scores. Talented Union receiver Tracy Moore caught two TDs and tied the game in overtime with the last touchdown. 2007 – State Finals For the second straight year, big performances by quarterback Mark Ginther and tailback Chris Adkins in the Class 6A state championship game helped Jenks come away with the gold football. Adkins had 26 carries for 229 yards and two touchdowns while Ginther produced 202 yards total offense and three TDs to lead the Trojans past Union 42-24

2008 - Another fantastic finish was added on Friday night to the history of the Jenks-Union football rivalry that already had more than its share of amazing endings. For the second straight year, Jeremy Smith scored the winning overtime touchdown, this time on a 1-yard run, to help fourth-ranked Union outlast top-ranked Jenks 24-17 at Union-Tuttle Stadium in a battle of Class 6A powers. Jenks quarterback Beau Marsaln tossed two fourth quarter TDs to bring the comeback for the Trojans. Redskins receiver Tracy Moore was named the game’s most valuable player as he caught nine passes for 128 yards. With a capacity crowd of over 15,000, Union-Tuttle Stadium was rocking. Union’s Chase Boyce threw for over 200 yards and Thomas Roberson scored on a 47-yard reverse in the first half.

2008 – State Championship Union won its fifth state title Friday with a 34-20 win over Jenks in a Class 6A state high school football championship before 19,000 at Boone Pickens Stadium in Stillwater, Oklahoma. Union answered Jenks’ second half rally when the Trojans tied the game 20-20 in the third quarter. However, Union had too many weapons with a stout defense and the running of Jeremy Smith. Smith had three touchdowns on runs of 44, 32 and 15. Overall, Smith had 242 yards on 28 carries. Quarterback Chase Boyce connected with Thomas Roberson on two second half scores. Jenks’ Tramaine Thompson provided an offensive spark with

other schools also. A new and exciting program is the MidFirst Fundraising Van. The van has two coin counters that students, parents and fans can drop coins into the counter. 2009 – A star is born as Jenks running back Zack Langer bursts on to the scene for the Trojans as they won 27-25 in another thriller. The junior had 135 yards on 32 carries and scored on runs of 23 and 34-yards in the second half to seal the deal. Thomas Roberson returned a punt for a touchdown and caught another. Jenks’ Sawyer Kollmorgan ran for a score and hit Tyler Ott for another. The game was capped off with five turnovers from the Redskins and the Trojans took advantage. The attendance was announced at over 19,000, bringing the 15-year total to over 400,000 in spectators since 1994.

2009 – State Championship The 2009 Class 6A state championship game produced another big surprise in the UnionJenks rivalry — the largest blowout in the seven title showdowns between the teams. For the second straight year, Union defeated Jenks in the 6A final behind a huge night from Union receiver Thomas Roberson. Roberson returned the opening kickoff on a lateral from Jacob Rice to scamper 76-yards for the score. Union’s Chase Boyce had 165 total yards and accounted for three touchdowns as Union. He became the first Union quarterback to start two championship wins. Union finished the half with a 32-0 lead and capped it off with a 52-19 victory. Union’s Luke Snider and company led the Redskin defense in shutting down the state’s top runner. Jenks Zack Langer was never able to get in gear but still accounted for over 150 yards and a score. That was Union’s sixth title in eight years and the 16th year in a row that Union or Jenks have claimed the 6A title.

Restoring pride in a community by fixing an old school building is one thing, but can it serve as a platform to help restore pride in the football team? We think so!

Renaissance building in Ramona was built around 1915-16 by the Kreep & Hinkle Company of Bartlesville. The “Showcase” building provided the students of Ramona with a place not only for classrooms, but a regulation basketball court was built on the top floor with operatype seating and a capacity of nearly 400. The lower floor housed a small power plant, a swimming pool with modern dressing rooms featuring hot and cold showers. The lower floor also included a woodworking room and a forging room. This was truly an innovative building that served students for many decades.

A few phone calls and a couple of trips up I-75 and you’ve got yourself a story. Yes the building is still standing and yes the football team can climb up that same staircase. A few modifications have been made to the stairs. The current steps are much taller with handrails and a wheelchair access ramp has been built off to one side. Interesting side note, the original

Then the idea was born. What if that building was still standing? Could we take a photo with the current football team? Several years ago Ramona consolidated

But this story is about more than just the rebuilding of a 93 year-old building. In January 2010, VYPE printed a photo of the 1917 Ramona football team. Not knowing who was in the photo, what year it was taken or where it was, VYPE left it up to the readers

In the late 90’s the building was in trouble. A leaking roof, broken windows, holes in the floor, all made it very difficult for students to use the facility effectively. After several attempts at making the building an historical landmark, the school board and the community were faced with trying to decide whether to tear down, rebuild or restore. The community chose to restore and in January of 1996 the restoring process began.

The Players - Old (The descriptions used in this paragraph are copied from the 1917 Ramona High School yearbook titled Gusher) Football was new to Ramona in 1917, but coach Hamilton was able to form a team and compete at a high level. The Captain was Maurice “Slick” Bass, played quarterback and always contended for a square deal. Dewey “Dude” Ely played right tackle and started there the entire year. George “Chief” Daniels played right end and his favorite pastime was importing flowers to a blonde. Talmage “Cabbage” Boone played fullback and was known for eating cabbage, being a hard line plunger and a demon on defense. Harry “Pete” Radebaugh played left guard. Radebaugh also filled in at center and his pastime was making tackles and flunking history. Harold “Pat” Patterson played center and was known for his sense of humor. Patterson’s pastime was telling tales. Paul “Shag” Lee played halfback and surprised Caney when he picked off one of their passes in the air. Joe “Count” Foltz played halfback. Foltz tackled men who were coming straight at him, that’s how he broke his “breather” in the Dewey game.

Lyndall “L.W.” Berwaldt is new to the Trojans this season, but he is expected to contribute full heartedly. L.W. enjoys playing music and says he would be voted most likely to become CEO of a company. He is best known for his Jerry Clower imitations and his favorite subject is school is Math.

William “Lil Bill” Bradley also displays his skills on the diamond during baseball season. Bradley is a character and is known for being a class clown, but he gets his studies done, especially in Math. He is known for being very athletic.

Brandon “B-Dub” Kincaide is fast on the filed and fast on the motocross track. He is best known for getting in trouble because he is class clown like Bradley. His favorite subject is school is English. Look for No.25 racing for a touchdown.

It was a new game to the kids of Ramona High School. Today the players fight to restore the pride once prevalent in the school, in the locker room and on the football field. Now head coach Anthony Fogle in his fifth year, is looking ahead at a brighter future with the squad. “The Caney Valley Trojans are a young group of guys working hard to change the past disappointments and rekindle the success of old. The extreme heat hasn’t dampened any spirits. We are 30 strong right now with expectations of a few more joining our ranks.” Coach Fogle continues, “The boys have already become a closer knit family than the teams of years past. We have high expectations to have a break out season this year. The attitude has been awesome in the locker room and the boys have been so dedicated that they spend up to an hour after practice getting extra reps.” The overall feel around the players is one of excitement and eagerness to get on the field and the photo shoot for this story has taken on a life of it’s own. “The photo shoot was an awesome experience for me and my boys. The boys have been buzzing about the old team and asking many questions. It has given us time to reflect on the history of our program and allows my team to take a since of pride in working to revive a tradition of winning like the school did so many years ago,” said coach Fogle.

Austin “Shordy” Eden is known for his good looks, but isn’t afraid to get dirty. Eden likes to show livestock in his free time and believes he is most likely to become President. His favorite subject in school is Math.

When Jordan “G-Baby” Bradley isn’t chasing down wide receivers he’s chasing girls on campus. Bradley is a whiz at Math and is most likely to become a highway patrol after high school. He’s also known for having a good time at parties.

With the 2010 football season upon us we wanted to take a closer look at some of the stories developing during two-a-days and early scrimmages. If the indications are correct, this could be one of the best football seasons in recent memory.

Muskogee High School A year ago, Muskogee High School senior Matt Rust had a door slammed in his face when a torn A-C-L put the talented athlete out for the entire season. “At first, I was depressed, unsure how to handle it,” said Rust. “But as I look back at the experience, I now know it was for a reason, God’s way of opening another door for today and tomorrow.” Preparing for this year’s football season wasn’t the only thing for Rust this summer. “God gave me the opportunity to make a difference for Him through a two week mission trip to China,” said Rust. “We helped teach English to elementary age kids plus got the opportunity to tell others about Jesus Christ. I got to share with them about God’s never ending love and how he can make a wonderful life for them despite the life threats they face as well as being kicked out of their family.”

“What I experienced in China only strengthens my commitment to be a Christ-like example here at home, at school and on our football team,” said Rust. “I know my friends and I face challenges, temptations not to follow God’s plan seeking short term success. But God has a better way and something special planned for every one of us if we’ll just listen and follow His game plan.” Romans 3:23 (NIV)23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

I started cross country in the seventh grade cause my bro, Mitch Johnson did it. He graduated in 2008, now he goes to the University of Tulsa. When I’m running I think about the finish, my form and my competitors. One of my favorite places to run is Riverside. Keep an eye on the guys from Norman. They’re going to be pretty good this year. The secret to long distance running is hard work. You get what you put in. When I’m not running or competing I love to ball it up. After high school I want to run in college, but do not know where. I’m undecided on a major. I’m looking at the University of Tulsa and a few other schools.

I started competing my freshman year of high school. What goes through my head when I’m running depends on if I’m in a race or workout. In a race I focus on my breathing and keeping pace. In a workout I just think about whatever sometimes personal life sometimes nothing. My favorite place to workout is a place called “Camp Horizon” in Arkansas City, Kansas. There is one kid who might give me some trouble this cross country season and he is from Metro Christian and his name is David Annett. Mileage is the most important part of being a successful distance runner. Until you do the mileage you’ll never be one of the greats. Also everyone has different miles that they can run so don’t just go run 70 miles a week because someone else does. You have to build up to a lot of miles, you can’t just jump into it. My favorite thing to do outside of cross country is track. After high school I plan to run cross country and track in college, while I train and learn to be a pharmacist. I also plan to run outside of college when I get older. I plan on never stopping unless I physically can’t run anymore. Also one day I WILL tryout for the USA Olympic team.

I was 13 when I started running. I think about whatever is happening at the moment. That’s the great thing about running, its a great time to reflect on your day and clear your mind. One of my favorite places to run is on the riverside trail or at Jenks High School track. Union’s Sarah Daggett is always strong along with Norman’s Megan Johnson. We also have a freshman coming up named Maddie Brown and she should be in the mix. The secret to long distance running is don’t go too easy and don’t go too hard, know your body’s limits. When I’m not running I like to spend time with friends and family. My plan after high school is to continue my running career in college.

I started competing the summer going into seventh grade, so I was 12. While I’m running, I do my best to focus on God and bringing Him glory. So I pray a lot while I run, especially in races. I also think about my splits, how fast I need to be running, and how I can catch the next girl. The best place I’ve ever run was Niagara Falls Parkway, it was beautiful. My favorite place to run in Tulsa is Riverside between 61st and 21st. I am really excited for the Metro girls cross country team this year. We have a big group of girls with a lot of potential. Keep your eye on Sarah Kauble and Melissa Minnich to be standouts this season. I don’t think there is one secret, but having strong, positive mental outlook, and a good attitude are key to success. It is also important to push through pain and persevere. Playing with friends is one of my favorite things to do outside of running. I plan on attending college, hopefully running on a scholarship and competing on a high level. I’m excited to see where God takes me!

I started competing in the summer after my third grade year to keep in shape for soccer. Most of time I just think about my splits, but on a few of my runs I get caught in a fantasy. I will pretend that I am running some big race and pretend I am in contention for the win. My favorite run in Tulsa is the Turkey Mountain Base Trail, but I have also run in Crested Butte, Colorado. It’s hard to beat running on the sides of mountains through aspens and alongside mountain streams. It is hard to say who to look out for during a season. So many variables come in to play. It is also hard to draw the line on who to include and who not to include. Despite this, I would like to give credit to some great athletes, so if I leave anyone out on accident, I do apologize. There are always the guys who are expected to be at the front like Dakota Buck, Dustin Barrier, Tanner Satterthwaite, Andy Carroll, Erik Alnes and Adam Johnson, but this next year there are some up and coming talents showing up like the Pile brothers, Dan and Jim, from Metro (my team), Logan Smith, Ray Harwood and Noah Gade who could make huge jumps in position by state. The secret to endurance running is actually not a secret at all; it is in the name. It is all about learning how to endure pain a little better than the rest. I love to play any other outdoor sport with friends, whether it is Frisbee, soccer, or rock climbing. I hope to study exercise sciences and possibly biology when I am out of high school. I would also love to run in college if given the chance.

I started competing in summer track and road races when I was 10 years old. Union had an elementary school track meet, and in 5th grade I won the 800m run—I have been running ever since! When I am racing, I try to focus on pushing myself harder and not letting up. I don’t really strategize, I just run my own race and run hard the whole way through. Even if I am not having my best race, I just remember that my teammates are counting on me to do my best no matter what. My favorite place to run is anywhere new! I always run in my neighborhood or on the roads around school, so it is always nice to change it up and find a different area! Regan Ward, Megan Johnson, and Paige Barnes will all be very competitive this fall! It will be exciting to race them again this fall because all of them are great runners! Long distance running requires a lot of dedication—you have to get out everyday and run to stay in shape. You also have to be able to push yourself; it is very easy to just go through the motions. Mental strength is just as important as physical strength because you can’t give up during workouts or you’ll do the same during a race. Basically, you have to commit to yourself to work hard everyday, no matter what. Nobody else can make you run; self-motivation is very important. Outside of cross country, I love to read! I spend too much money on books and have way to many! All my friends will tell you that I read way to many Agatha Christie mysteries! After high school, I plan to run in college, but I have no idea where yet! I’m still looking for the right school, but I’m planning to major in biomedical engineering.

Bixby Cross Country Schedule Released

Lady Spartans Play Well at Broken Arrow The Lady Spartans were in Pool D with some heavy hitters in the softball world, but they played well enough to make it to the final bracket on day two. In their opener the Lady Spartans beat Catoosa, 7-3, but then were blanked by Edmond North, 5-0. After going 1-1 in their first two games the Lady Spartans took it to Pryor, 4-0. On day two they faced the Tahlequah Sequoyah Lady Indians as they continued pool play. In one of the more entertaining games of the tournament, the Lady Spartans beat the Lady Indians, 12-10. Up next Bixby faced a tough Mustang team and lost, 6-2. Bixby faced Mannford in bracket play and the game was another good one with the Lady Spartans winning, 10-7. 32 teams competed in the Broken Arrow Tournament.

Commandos Congratulations Class of 2010

Out of a class of 88, 21 were named Oklahoma Academic Scholars; five were Byrd Scholarship recipients, five were National Merit Finalists, and four were Commended; 67 are members of the National Honor Society; 100% will attend college in the fall. As seniors, they earned three OSSAA State Championships in football, boys’ soccer, and boys’ tennis and five Runner-up titles in volleyball, girls’ tennis, wrestling, and boys’ golf. The cheerleaders took first place in NCA national competition. Eight students received All State honors and six athletes will go on to compete at the college level. Over the past four years, this class has been part of 14 State Championship teams in seven sports. Each class member performed numerous hours of Christian service in order to meet the community service requirement for graduation. Compliments of the Cascia Hall Newsletter

Redskins Tony May to coach Union boys’ golf team

Tony May has been named the varsity head boys’ golf coach for Union Public Schools. “Coach May brings the experience of running a Class 6A program along with the organizational skills to help take the boys’ program to the next level,” Director of Athletics Chuck Perry said. “His character, drive, and determination will have a positive impact on these young men both on and off the golf course.” May previously coached golf at Wichita Southeast High School for both boys and girls. He coached the boys’ team when it won the 1996 Class 6A state championship. May received the Kansas Coaches Association Coach of the Year award in 1996. He was named Coach of Year by the National Federation of Interscholastic Coaches Association in 1997. In addition to coaching golf, May has been a wrestling coach and official in both Kansas and Oklahoma. He received the Oklahoma Secondary Schools Activities Association State Championship Wrestling Official Award for five years from 2006 to 2010. Earlier this summer, Union named Lindsay Jones as varsity head girls’ golf coach at Union. Jones served the past two years as Union’s assistant varsity coach for both boys and girls. Jones attended high school at Holland Hall and graduated in 2004 from Oral Roberts University where she was a member of the golf team. Jones has taught and coached at Holland Hall and served as an assistant golf professional at Emerald Falls Country Club. She has been teaching at Union since 2008. “Coach Jones has the golf experience, demeanor, and desire to lead these young ladies to be successful on and off the golf course,” Perry said. “We are fortunate to have someone of her caliber working with our girls. With the talent returning, it should be a tremendous year.”

Others weighed in on their experience in Texas. “Coming back from being down during the Texas Dirtbags game & my Gran acting like a nut is what I’ll remember,” said Cook. “Winning the title of VTD World Series Champions was worth all of the hard work we have put in the past nine years. My dad is the coach and I would like to thank him for pushing me to do her very best,” said Fallin. “I remember grabbing a hold of that BIG TROPHY,” said Jacobson.

ith temperatures reaching 100 degrees and a field that featured some of the best 12&U girls softball teams in the country, the Boomer Sooners proved they were the best giving up only four runs the entire tournament. There fans could be heard all weekend yelling, “BOOMER – SOONER” every time the girls stepped up to the plate.

Haley Cook from Henryetta and third baseman Lyndsey Dunkle from Broken Arrow all made huge plays during the tournament. Catcher Emily Harrison from Coweta played great behind the plate. Outfielders Baliegh Fallin (CF) from Glenpool, MacKenzie Holder (LF) from Tulsa and Aly Wyn (RF) from Tulsa forced runners to think twice about taking that extra base. Hannah Pryce from Glenpool did an outstanding job as well. “I enjoyed going to Dallas and playing different teams. I loved winning games and knowing that it was bringing us one game closer to the finals! The final game was a rush and one of the best feelings I have ever had,” said Holder.

or the Nathan Hale High School varsity dance squad, “make it work” isn’t just a catchphrase from a Thursday night reality show. It’s what they’ve been doing since the first day of practice – and what they intend to do all the way to Nationals. The team decided last year to step into a new role of Tulsa’s only Hip-Hop exclusive school sponsored dance program, beginning with only eight members. This year they have a team of 14 – eight girls and six boys and have a JV team of 10. They’re the first co-ed team in the state! The diverse squad represents a cross section of nationalities and none of the members have formal dance experience.

What the troupe lacks in training, they make up with talent, commitment and sheer determination. Hours each week are dedicated to making the team a success –weekly practices, plus regular performances at games and competitions.

“This team is eager to learn, to do whatever it takes to win,” says coach Sabrina Capper. “They work hard and take pride in their accomplishments, big or small. After working with some of the best teams in the state, I find I like coaching a team on the rise, such as Hale, because it means so much to these kids to really excel at something they have a passion for and to have a coach that cares as much as they do.”

And that passion is paying off. Last year, they won their first ever Oklahoma State Dance Team Directors Association (OSDTDA) State Championship and advanced for the first time to finals at the National Dance Team Championship in Orlando, Fla. This year, the team once again competed at Universal Dance Association (UDA) and won an invitation to compete at Nationals! Aside from the obvious challenge of

competition, the squad members also face serious hardships off the dance floor. Nathan Hale High isn’t in the position to offer financial assistance to the group, so the dancers will be personally responsible for raising the thousands of dollars it takes to get to Nationals. Fundraising efforts will include sales of candy, wrapping paper and raffle tickets, working odd jobs and soliciting donations. This is in addition to commitments at school, at home, and for most, at work. A condition of team eligibility is an above-average GPA – a win-win, as it teaches responsibility and serves as a good incentive for the students to keep their grades up. This sense of accountability spills over into personal lives as well. “There have been many times when the team discuss that they are proud of themselves for walking away from fights or compromising parties because they want to maintain the integrity of the team’s reputation,” says Capper. “The team holds each other responsible for their behavior.” The team’s leaders work very hard

to help the students keep a sense of balance. In addition to coach Capper, school sponsor Lynda Holt manages all of the paperwork, funds, scheduling and logistics, as well as serving as the honorary team ‘mom’ – giving rides, helping with fundraising, playing mediator and providing a constant source of support. Cristhian Guzman is responsible for the squad’s unique and outstanding choreography. Capper credits Guzman’s attention to the team’s strengths and unique choreography as a key component to the team’s successes. Next is this year’s OSDTDA State Championships then the final success will be showcasing the squad’s efforts on the national stage where they hope to exceed last year’s amazing success. Fundraising efforts have been in full swing to raise the required funds to make the deposit deadlines, but there is still a long way to go to cover the complete cost. The team is determined to make it to the UDA National Dance Team Championship Feb. 5th and 6th at Disney World in Orlando, Fla. Whatever it takes – they’ll make it work.
