RAISE THE FLAG CAMPAIGN Tulsa-Area Businesses Partnering With TU Athletics The University of Tulsa athletics department and Security Bank have partnered to encourage Tulsa-area businesses in supporting the Golden Hurricane by ‘raising the flag’ at their place of business.

The Security Bank Raise the Flag campaign will provide local businesses a 3x5 TU flag to be visibly displayed during the fall and spring seasons, at no cost to the business. As Tulsa athletics continues to explore ways to expand its footprint and visibility in the community, the Security Bank Raise the Flag campaign is another component of the promotional campaign #ForOurCity that TU athletics unveiled earlier this month.

gram by going online at TulsaHurricane.com and completing a brief registration form.

Businesses will receive a free TU Hurricane Flag to display at their company throughout the year and on game days. In addition, registered businesses will also receive tickets to select TU athletic events, team posters and schedule cards.

“There are a number of businesses that are able to support our athletic program financially, and with this special Raise the Flag program, Security Bank is making it possible for all area businesses, small and large, the opportunity to help us amplify our footprint in northeastern Oklahoma by simply displaying a TU flag,” said Gragg.

“Our student-athletes are very much aware that they represent this city every day that they put on their uniforms with ‘TULSA’ scripted across their jerseys. We hope that all businesses in the community will show their pride in Tulsa and support of our teams by raising the flag,” added Gragg. “We thank Security Bank for their partnership in offering this great opportunity for all local businesses.”

For more information, businesses can contact Golden Hurricane Sports Properties at 918.631.6102 or via email at isadler@learfield. com.

“Security Bank is thrilled to be a partner with The University of Tulsa. We look forward to accompanying TU on their journey to enhance the Golden Hurricane footprint throughout the Tulsa community,” said Eric M. Bohne, chief executive officer, chairman of Security Bank. “The people and businesses are what make the city of Tulsa so remarkable. Everyone I have encountered in this city is willing to help make this community and this university a better place, and you don’t find that everywhere,” said Dr. Derrick Gragg, Tulsa’s vice president and director of athletics. OSU vs. TULSA #HereWeGo TU-OSU Football Game Named Bank of Oklahoma Turnpike Classic One of The University of Tulsa’s longest-standing football series now has a title sponsor.

Effective for the 2017 season, the football series between the Tulsa Golden Hurricane and the Oklahoma State Cowboys will be named the Bank of Oklahoma Turnpike Classic. Tulsa and OSU kick-off the season on Thursday night, August 31, in Stillwater.

“We’re thrilled to support this historic and exciting series between two of the state’s top college football programs,” said Pat Piper, executive vice president of Consumer Banking Services for BOK Financial. “Bank of Oklahoma’s beginnings go back to 1910 just before the start of this series so it’s with particular pride

that we partner on an event with such rich history and which brings together fans from across the state.”

The Golden Hurricane and Cowboys have met on the gridiron 71 times in a series that dates back to 1914. This year’s 72nd meeting will tie for the most on the gridiron for the Hurricane against any opponent, other than the 72 games with Arkansas.

“Bank of Oklahoma has been an long-standing fixture in the state and the city of Tulsa for many years, and their partnership brings together three of Oklahoma’s finest institutions.” said Dr. Derrick Gragg, Tulsa’s vice president and director of athletics. “This game has a tremendous history as fans of the two schools have

witnessed many outstanding players, games and remarkable plays in a series dating back to 1914. We are grateful to Bank of Oklahoma for their sponsorship of the two schools and this turnpike rivalry.”

HURRICANE, SHOCKERS... AGAIN Tulsa-Wichita State to Name Rivalry Series The University of Tulsa and Wichita State University have announced the creation of a rivalry series competition that will span 13 varsity sports in its inaugural year.

Fans had an opportunity to select the name of the rivalry series beginning from August 16-20, through voting on social media. The three names fans had to choose from were: Battle for the Plains, Tornado Alley Tussle and the winning name as selected by fans –– Havoc in the Heartland.

Points will be awarded for head-to-head regular-season victories in volleyball, basketball and softball or a higher finish at conference championships in cross country, tennis, track & field and women’s golf. The trophy, which is being created, will be awarded to the school with the most points at the end of each Academic Year. With 66 points being awarded, the official tiebreaker for the rivalry series will be the annual Graduation Success Rate, which is announced by the NCAA each year.

A Most Valuable Player award will also be announced following each regular-season matchup in volleyball and men’s and wom-

en’s basketball and at the conclusion of the three-game softball series.

Just 181 miles separate the two schools that were Missouri Valley Conference rivals from 1945 to 1996, but the football teams first played in 1928. The men’s basketball rivalry dates back to the 1930-31 season and the two teams have met 126 times on the hardwood. The rivalry was reignited on July 1, 2017 when Wichita State joined the American Athletic Conference.

Participating sports for the upcoming year will be volleyball, cross country, basketball, tennis, indoor and outdoor track & field, softball and women’s golf. Sixty-six points in 13 sports will be up for grabs.

The first contest of the inaugural series will take place in Wichita on Sunday, October 15, when volleyball takes center stage for the

rivalry’s kick-off.

In other fall events, the cross-country teams will meet at the American Athletic Conference Championship in Philadelphia, Pa., on Oct. 28, while the volleyball teams will meet again in Tulsa on Nov. 17.

Still No Respect! The gains made by Tulsa football in coach Philip Montgomery’s second year will be difficult to replicate in Year 3.

TU improved by four wins in Montgomery’s first year, from 2-10 to 6-7, then got four wins better in 2016, to 10-3. So, 14 wins this season?

Probably not. Not when the Golden Hurricane faces the graduation of the most prolific quarterback in school history, a pair of 1,000-yard receivers and a 1,000-yard running back. “We were fortunate to set a national record,” Montgomery said, referring to TU last season becoming the first school in NCAA history with a 3,000-yard passer, two 1,000-yard runners and two 1,000-yard receivers. Quarterback Dane Evans, wideouts Keevan Lucas and Josh Atkinson, and running backs James Flanders and D’Angelo Brewer now have a display in the College Football Hall of Fame commemorating their unprecedented statistical achievement. “Well,” Montgomery said, “four of those five guys are gone. That’s a lot of production. So you have to think about, ‘Who do I have to replace? Who am I gonna plug in as those guys grow and develop? How are those guys gonna work within the scheme and still do what we want to do?’ ” Whether it’s record-setting offensive players like Evans and Lucas or reliable defenders like linebackers Trent Martin and Matt Linscott, it goes beyond just finding replacements.

— must choose between redshirt freshman Luke Skipper and third-year sophomore Chad President.

President played in a designated shortyardage package as a true freshman and was down for additional duty last year, but was injured in the opener and missed the season. He’s big, athletic and knows the scheme, but is still polishing his mechanics. After redshirting last year, Skipper had a better spring than President, statistically speaking. He’s a good thrower and athletic enough to make magic, but is still young and learning the offense. Montgomery wants to see him trust the scheme and stand tall in the pocket.

“I really wanted one of them to take the reins and make the decision easy for me, but the competition was too tight this spring,” Montgomery said. “They’ll have the competition this summer to keep working, start the fall camp and we’ll see what happens. “I think both of ‘em are good leaders. They’ve got to continue growing in that sense. Both being young, they don’t have … enough skin on the wall to say, hey this is what I want.’ But they still have to be able to go in the huddle and take command of the huddle and that type of thing. Decisionmaking has to be the most important deal. One of the things I told ‘em, ‘Hey, especially

“You gotta find your new leaders and you gotta have guys that are ready to step up to play,” Montgomery said. “Where is that gonna come from? You gotta find the personality of the team. That’s one of the things that’s great about college football. Every year it’s a new challenge. You don’t know what that challenge is gonna be yet, but you gotta step up and find answers, and that’s exciting.”

OFFENSE

Tulsa football, and Philip Montgomery’s offense, has been largely built around special quarterbacks.

Evans turned his lone Division I scholarship offer into a school-record 904 completions, 11,680 passing yards, and 84 touchdowns. Montgomery inherited Evans as a junior and helped turn him into a star. Now Montgomery — a quarterback whisperer as offensive coordinator at Houston and Baylor

TU’s front five has been voted best in the American Athletic Conference, though that was before returning starter Blake Belcher retired due to concussions. Still, three-year starters Evan Plagg and Willie Wright are back at left tackle and right tackle, respectively, with help from Waahid Muhammad, Chris Ivy, and Chandler Miller is back at center. Zac Uhles and Tyler Bowling have experience at guard, backed up by massive Tiller Bucktrot and promsining freshman Dante Divens who chose TU over offers from TCU and Baylor. TU could be just as stacked in the backfield as last year if Ramadi Warren is avail

The University of Tulsa able to play alongside Brewer. Warren ran for 475 yards and six touchdowns while averaging 6.7 yards per carry in 2015 before academics sidelined him last year. Brewer became a star last year, finishing with 1,435 yards and seven TDs (5.4 yards per carry). Sophomore Corey Taylor, senior Rowdy Simon and freshman Shamari Brooks are capable backups. Montgomery’s scheme relies on a fullback/tight end hybrid to clear the way, and the position is in good hands: Junior Chris Minter is a two-year starter, backup Rob Riederer is a senior and junior Cole Neph transferred from Oklahoma State.

Wide receiver might need time to grow. With no Lucas or Atkinson, it’s time for Justin Hobbs to emerge as the leader. Hobbs, a fourthyear junior, was third on the team last year with 50 catches for 685 yards and four TDs, and has 82 career receptions for 1,236 yards. Coaches say he’s improved his hands a lot and is a good deep-ball threat. Keenen Johnson (30-305-1) had a solid freshman year and is a proven playmaker. Junior Nigel Carter (11 career catches, 117 yards) needs to step up. Between senior Bishop Louie, senior Brodrick Umblance and redshirt freshman Josh Stewart, TU needs a fourth option.

Defense

The Golden Hurricane has eight starters back on defense and could be as strong there as they’ve been in years.

At end, dynamic senior Jeremy Smith is a three-year starter with 9 ½ career quarterback sacks and 17 ½ tackles for loss but is coming off an injury. Senior Jesse Brubaker is a four-year starter with eight career sacks and 21 tackles for loss who scored two defensive touchdowns last season. Junior Myles Mouton and senior Frankie Davis are solid backups, but senior linebacker Petera Wilson will spin down and play some there in passing situations. Senior Kolton Shindelar is an athletic beast at tackle, a 6-foot-6, 280-pound disruptor with two long defensive touchdowns to his credit. Sophomore Shemarr Robinson played in every game last year and likely will start inside this season.

Replacing Martin and Linscott won’t be easy, but three-year starter Craig Suits (70 tackles, 3 ½ sacks, one interception, two fumbles) is back for his senior year to hold down the weakside linebacker

spot. Sophomore Cooper Edmiston (18 tackles last year) inherits the middle, backed up by Wilson.

Defensive coordinator Bill Young will experiment this year with big, rangy, athletic safety McKinley Whitfield stepping down and playing the hybrid “star” linebacker position. Whitfield, a junior, made just two starts last year but was sixth on the team with 59 tackles, Evan Plagg broke up four passes, had an interception, a fumble and two blocked kicks. Sophomore Diamon Cannon backs up Whitfield.

At down safety, sophonmore Manny Bunch steps into the role after Whitfield slid down to linebacker. Bunch compiled 11 tackles in 10 games last season. Sophomore Cristian Williams is in the competition there as well. Senior Jordan Mitchell is back at cover safety, where he was fifth on the team with 61 tackles last season and was co-leader with nine passes broken up. His backup, however, could be a true freshman. His backup is junior Sam Gottsch

Tulsa has both starters back at cornerback: Senior Kerwin Thomas is a three-year starter, and sophomore Reggie Robinson is one of the fastest corners in the AAC. Together they combined for 95 tackles and 16 passes broken up last season. Keanu Hill (eight starts, 20 tackles, five PBUs) is a third option and strong backup, and names like Keidrien Wadley and Montray Norris could emerge. “We have some big shoes to fill with graduation of some players who played key roles for us,” Montgomery said. “And the competition going on for those spots has been really, really good.”

Special Teams

Senior Redford Jones will vie for All-AAC honors. Last season he hit all 49 PATs and 21-of-26 on field goals, with four of those misses from outside of 40 yards. Jones also handled all kickoffs last year. In his two seasons as Tulsa’s kicker, he’s 38-of-51 on field goals and 107-of-109 on extra points. Sophomore punter Thomas Bennett started his career at Baylor in 2015, but as a non-recruited walk-on, he transferred to TU in the spring and is immediately eligible. As a high school senior, Bennett averaged 42.7 yards per punt and was a long jump and triple jump champion.

Freshman deep snapper Adam Higuera, younger brother of former Golden Hurricane Rey Higuera, could have a long career at the position.

Cross Country Teams Seek More American Athletic Conference Hardware Coming off another banner year in 2016, The University of Tulsa cross country squads will look to continue their success in the American Athletic Conference and maintain their standing as one of the top programs in the region.

The men’s team will be tasked with replacing conference and regional champion Luke Traynor, but returns much of its core from a group that won the program’s seventh consecutive conference title and earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Championships with a second-place showing at the NCAA Midwest Regional last fall.

That group is led by seniors Ben Preisner, Henry Pearce and Adam Roderique, who each finished in the top five of last season’s conference race with Traynor, along with juniors Isaac Dobos and Austin Del Rosso. All five runners earned all-conference recognition a season ago. 32

FALL 2014

The women’s squad must replace Clara Langley and Olivia Lopez, but will return seniors Stacie Taylor and Nicole Lee, in addition to sophomore Adrena Mazzei. Taylor, Lee and Mazzei all claimed all-conference honors with a top-15 finish at The American Championships last season and, after taking second in the team standings, the group will look to claim the program’s fifth league title this fall. Head coach Steve Gulley, who has led the Golden Hurricane cross country programs since 2000, will see his teams open competition this fall at the Cowboy Preview in Stillwater on Sept. 1. TU will head to the Missouri Southern Stampede (Sept. 16) and return to Stillwater for the Cowboy Jamboree (Sept. 30) before a trip north for the Wisconsin Invitational (Oct. 13). The American Championships will be held Oct. 28 in Philadelphia with the NCAA Midwest Regionals to follow in Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 10.

The men will look to extend their program record with a seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships, which will take place on Nov. 18 in Louisville, Ky., while the women will look to qualify for the second time in the last three seasons.

The Golden Hurricane will be tasked with replacing all-conference honorees Erica Bohannon and Brooke Berryhill, while doing it with six returning players, including Rachel Moore and Emily Thorson, and seven newcomers, includidng six freshmen and one junior college transfer. Tulsa has incurred some early injuries before and during preseason camp, so the bench maybe shortened, at least in the early going for the Hurricane. Moore leads all returning players with 158 kills, 242.5 points and 23 service aces. She led the entire team with 113 total blocks last season. With 1.65

kills per set, Thorson leads the returning players. Ashton Anderson and Taylor Horsfall lead returners in digs with 303 and 289, respectively. Anderson led the team with 801 assists last season and is second, of returning players, with 22 service aces. Ryan Wills enters his fourth season as head volleyball coach at Tulsa. The 2016 campaign under Wills started with an 11-1 mark

TU will start the 2017 campaign on the road for the first 12 matches. The Hurricane will play their home opener as well as conference opener against Houston on Sept. 22 at the Donald W. Reynolds Center. Tulsa wraps up the season with a matchup against the defending conference champion SMU on Nov. 24.

HURRICANE Tulsa Stays Strong with Oklahoma Recruiting and Commitments

By Chris Harmon While the Tulsa coaching staff is using its numerous connections in the state of Texas to draw in talent, they haven’t forgotten about the Sooner State. As of August 24, TU had three commitments from Oklahoma in its 2018 recruiting class. The first in-state pledge came from talented Skiatook running back TK Wilkerson. The 6-foot-2, 210 pound speedster was the Hurricane’s second member of the 2018 class when he committed on March 4, 2017.

“The education,” he said of why he chose the Golden Hurricane. “I really like the campus and football facilities, and I love the relationship the coaches have with the players. Coach (Justin) Hill is my main recruiter.”

Wilkerson chose Tulsa over offers from SMU and Howard. He was also receiving increased interest from Oklahoma State, Houston and others.

The 3-star prospect is currently rated at No. 20 in the state of Oklahoma by Rivals.com. He said “being able to adapt fast” is his biggest strength on the gridiron. “I want to get at least 1,500 yards and to win a championship,” Wilkerson said of his goals for his senior season. This past spring, Wilkerson attended the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp in Dallas, obtaining the MVP award at his position and impressing Rivals.com recruiting analysts Josh Helmholdt and Woody Wommack. “Wilkerson was both the biggest and 42

TK Wilkerson

the most impressive running back in attendance, and he came away with position MVP honors after Sunday’s performance,” they wrote. “At 6-foot-2 and 208 pounds, he looks more like an H-back physically, but he showed great change of direction and athleticism, making him a tough cover in one-onones. Wilkerson also received high praise from the running backs coaches for his work in position drills.”

The next local product to commit to Tulsa was Jones tight end and defensive

end Dalton May on March 4.

“The second I walked into the place, it felt like home,” the 6-foot-3 and 240-pounder told Inside Tulsa Sports. “They also have an amazing coaching staff that gives a warm welcome to anyone that enters the university.”

May checked out the TU program on March 5, 2016, after his sophomore season. He was back on campus that June for a Philip Montgomery Prospect Camp and then attended Tulsa’s home-

RECRUITING Owens chose Tulsa over offers from Nevada, Air Force, Utah State, North Texas, Ohio, Texas State, Stephen F. Austin, Montana and others. A big part of his decision appears to be the connection he made with Tulsa offensive line coach Mike Bloesch, as well as TU head coach Philip Montgomery.

Dalton May coming game in October. When he returned to campus for junior day on March 4, 2017, he picked up an offer from the Hurricane and decided to commit.

May was also being recruited by Baylor, Oklahoma State, SMU, Kansas, Southern Illinois and Eastern Michigan. He attended summer camps at Oklahoma and SMU last year and also attended junior days at Baylor and Oklahoma State.

As a junior last season, May had 12 catches for 193 yards and five touchdowns, averaging 16.1 yards per reception and helping his team to a Class 3A state title. He averaged 26.8 yards per catch as a sophomore with 268 yards and four scores on 10 receptions.

“I really like Coach Bloesch and Coach Monty,” he said. “Coach Bloesch is a really good guy. I’ve been in contact with him since my sophomore year. He has always treated me really well, and we’ve built a great relationship over a couple years. “I’ve met Coach Monty a few times and just recently started really talking to him. He’s just a good old country boy and seems really down to earth, which I really like.”

As a junior last season, Owens helped Bixby average over 480 yards per games on its way to a third consecutive state championship.

“I like going out in space, on screens and stuff,” he said of his strengths at his position. “I’m a little lighter for an offensive lineman, so I move pretty well side to side.”

With these three on board, expect Tulsa to add more in-state talent in the near future.

“I play very aggressively and block well,” he said of his strengths. “I know how to catch the ball in traffic. Most of all, I give maximum effort.” May also excels on the opposite side of the ball as a defensive end. As a junior, he tallied 73 tackles, 13 tackles for loss, seven QB hurries, five sacks and a forced fumble. In his sophomore season, he totaled 66 tackles, 18 tackles for loss, 12 QB hurries, eight sacks and three forced fumbles.

The most recent Tulsa commitment from a local prospect was Josh Owens. The Bixby offensive lineman chose the Hurricane on May 27. “Tulsa is close to home, and the coaches are great people,” Owens told Inside Tulsa Sports. “It’s an amazing education, and they are a great football team. It’s a great place. I like the campus, how it’s kind of all close together.”

LINEBACKER COMMITS Texas Two-Step: TU picks up two athletic linebackers from the Lone Star State

By Chris Harmon It’s no surprise that the new Tulsa coaching staff is heavily recruiting the state of Texas, where many of the Hurricane coaches have roots, and it is paying off in a big way. As of late-August, seven of Tulsa’s ten commitments in the 2018 class were from the Lone Star State, including a duo of talented linebackers.

On July 21, TU picked up a commitment from Argyle (TX) Liberty Christian linebacker Grant Sawyer, who attended a Philip Montgomery prospect camp earlier that day. The 6-foot-3 and 195-pounder had been on the TU campus several times before, and after a strong performance in front of Hurricane coaches, he picked up a scholarship offer and quickly committed. “I visited for a game, junior days and a camp,” he told Inside Tulsa Sports. “I really like the campus. I believe in Coach Montgomery and the entire staff and the program they have built. “After talking with my family, we decided this is the place for me. I’m excited for the future, very blessed.” Sawyer was also being recruited by Houston,

Texas State, North Texas, Tulane, Stephen F. Austin, Northern Colorado, Sam Houston State and others. He had taken unofficial visits to Tulane, North Texas and SFA, and he attended camps at Houston and Texas A&MCommerce.

Sawyer was a two-way starter for Liberty Christian as a junior last season, playing receiver and outside linebacker. He used his size and speed (4.50-second forty-yard dash) to rack up impressive statistics despite missing three games due to a broken hand in the third game of the season. “I have the ability to tackle inside the box, as well as cover receivers,” he added. Sawyer finished the season with 90 tackles, four interceptions and seven pass breakups. He’ll look to improve on those numbers as a senior in order to help his team reach its goal. “Goals this season would be to win our district and win the state championship,” he said.

The day after Sawyer committed, Tulsa earned another verbal pledge from a prospect camp attendee. Reese Mason became the second 2018 linebacker to commit to Tulsa over a two-day span when he announced his decision on Twitter.

Mason actually played quarterback for Magnolia (TX) this past spring after a stellar junior season as a wide receiver in 2016. The 6-foot-2 and 195-pound athlete was offered by Tulsa as a linebacker after attending camp. He also attended a TU Junior Day earlier this year. “The coaching staff is just so close and have treated me like family since day one,” he told Inside Tulsa Sports. “I can tell they wanted me bad since day one and really put a lot of effort into me as a recruit. They believed in my ability most importantly.

“The campus is beautiful. I visited on a junior day back in February or March. It’s nice and small and kept up. The facilities are pretty nice too. Weight room looks great and the stadium is really nice.”

Reese Mason

Mason helped Magnolia to a 10-2 overall record last season, including 7-0 in league play. He totaled 59 receptions for 1,046 yards 44

Grant Sawyer

and 15 touchdowns, averaging 17.7 yards per catch. The linebacker position is new to Mason, but he obviously showed enough at camp that Tulsa coaches saw his ability and promise at that spot.

“I’ve never played linebacker before, except for at two camps this summer,” he explained. “I believe my strengths are speed in coverage and coming off the edge.”

With his college decision behind him, Mason will now turn his focus to his senior season at Magnolia. “I’m playing QB this season, so I want to be a leader for the team and put up amazing numbers through the air and on the ground,” he said. “The team goal is always to win it all. We need to take the program as far as possible, which is state.”

Mason was also being recruited by Baylor, Utah, Tulane, Rice and several others. The athletic duo of Sawyer and Mason could be the future for Tulsa at outside linebacker.
