OFFENSE The Bartlesville Bruins won their last three games of the 2014 season to sneak into the Class 6A-II playoffs. Unfortunately for the Bruins, their streak ended there. Coming into 2015, the Bruins return almost all of their key skill players on the offensive side of the ball. Eight starters overall return on offense to provide a solid nucleus of talent. Leading the way for the Bruins is the wide receiverquarterback combination of AJ Parker (6-0, 175, Sr.) and Colton Penrod (6-1, 180, Sr.), both of whom are VYPE Top 100 football players. Last season, both Parker and Penrod were on fire, and they are looking forward to finishing their careers in championship fashion. Penrod has thrown for more than 6,000 yards over the course of the past two seasons. He has that rare blend of intelligence and arm strength. Parker finished with VYPEOK.COM

offensive lineman fits. Crowder’s ability to rush the passer will take some of the pressure off of the secondary and linebackers. Crowder is a key piece to the 3-4 defense McKee runs. Defensive back David Wiseman (6-1, 185, Sr.) is a sure tackler who can defend the pass extremely well. Last season, he recorded 103 tackles and five pass break ups. Linebacker Hunter Gritzmaker (5-10, 190, Sr.) recorded 72 tackles and two sacks as a junior, and he will be expected to up that production this season. This Bruin defense has a lot of experienced athletes returning who will make a huge impact in more than one game. Expect consistent play on both sides of the ball from the Bruins in 2015.

1,000 yards receiving and 12 touchdowns last season, and he will see those numbers increase this year. Parker is an explosive player who has tremendous ball skills. The explosive offense doesn’t stop there. Running back Jarron Hilger (5-10, 185, Sr.) had a tremendous junior season, running for 1,217 yards and hauling in 686 receiving yards. He had nine combined touchdowns. Up front, Isaac Barham (6-4, 296, Sr.) is the anchor, and the vocal leader. Barham points the other lineman in the right direction when they are confused. Head coach John McKee has plenty of optimism heading into this season. “We have a strong senior class ® returning, one that has a lot of experience,” McKee said. “We AUTO • HOME • LIFE are extremely excited about the upcoming year and are ready to get started.” DEFENSE Last season, the offense often scored enough points for the Bruins to win football games, but the defense had trouble stopping some of their opponents. They have eight starters returning to the defensive side of the ball. Parker, according to coach McKee, is one of the best cover cornerbacks in the state. He intercepted five passes and had five pass breakups, along with 28 tackles last season. Defensive lineman Tristan Crowder (6-4, 220, Sr.) is a tremendous pass rusher. Seth Hinnergart

Bartlesville High School This month’s FCA Athlete is Bartlesville senior football player Seth Hinnergart. Although Bartlesville does not have a local FCA chapter, Hinnergart is actively involved in the youth group at his church that many other students, involved in sports at Bartlesville High School, are in as well. Hinnergart is a right guard and defensive end for the Bartlesville Bruins football team and is a hard-working student, athlete and follower of Christ. How long have you been involved in your church youth group in Bartlesville? I have been in the youth group since I was in 6th grade.

What is your involvement in it? (leadership, member, etc.) I am an active member of the Dewey Church of Christ youth group. How has it made an impact on your sports and athletics life? It has not only affected my life but as well as my athletics because it helps me be a better teammate and grow closer to my teammates but also helps me be a better leader on the field and in the locker room.

What is your favorite bible verse and why? My favorite bible verse is Deuteronomy 20:4 and it says “For the Lord your God is the one who goes with you to fight for you against your enemies to give you victory.” This is my favorite verse because it reminds me that know matter what situation I am in football, or life, God will be there to guide me through. I also write this on my wrist before every game as a reminder.

Character Counts Athlete of the Month

ConocoPhillips is proud to highlight the great student-athletes who uphold the fabric of character on and off the field and court.

Hailey Linzy Bartlesville Volleyball

Bartlesville volleyball setter Hailey Linzy is this month’s Character Counts athlete. Although she grew up playing all types of sports, she focused solely on volleyball freshman year, and even plays for a club volleyball team. In addition to sports, Linzy is a part of the Students for the Conservation for Nature club and keeps herself busy and “loves to support other Bartlesville athletes” by attending as many events possible. Linzy enjoys spending time with her friends and family and plans

to attend the University of Arkansas to become a nurse. She hopes to someday work with the “Doctors without Borders” program. For her dedication to her sport, fellow athletes and high character, we give Hailey Linzy the Character Counts award for Bartlesville volleyball.

Freshman shortstop Ashlee Bridges is possibly the best overall athlete in the program at Dewey and should also play a major role this year according to Minton. Fellow freshmen Rylie Nickerson and Jaime Adams should also see significant time this year. Minton praised Nickerson for her defensive ability at first base and said Adams is an ultra-aggressive utility player with a high motor.

BARTLESVILLE MOM MONTH Karen Gormley - Bartlesville Mom Karen Gormley, the mother of Bartlesville senior volleyball player Anna Gormley, does more than her fair share to support the Lady Bruins volleyball program. According to head coach Tom Williams, Karen handles all the communications for the team. “If I need to get word out to parents or player, she is my go to person,” Williams said. When asked about her mom Anna praised her mom’s work ethic and effort she puts behind any little task she takes on. “My mom deserves to be the Mom of the Month because she constantly puts 100 percent into everything she does. Whether she is working, volunteering, or parenting she puts forth all her energy to ensure she is doing her task to the best of her ability,” Anna said. Anna went on to add that Karen constantly volunteers to work the door or the concession stand at games and also has a position on the board of the local club team Eclipse. Recently Karen also took inventory of the Bartlesville varsity jerseys to facilitate the process of handing them out to the players and ensuring that all the girls on the team got the right sizes for the new jerseys they will be getting this year. For her efforts to support the Bartlesville volleyball program and her children’s endeavors Karen Gormley is the Bartlesville Mom of the Month.

OFFENSE Head coach Ashley Henley returns seven starters to the offensive side of the ball. Of those seven are several skill position players that coach Henley will use in various formations and situations. “We’re running an up tempo, no huddle spread offense. More experience should lead to a more balanced attack. We will use 20 and 10 personnel formations extensively. We will be a zone run team in combination with a quick pass game in hopes of playing fast and getting the ball in the hands of playmakers,” said Henley. Hunter Brewer (5-11, 170, Jr.) accounted for 1,680 allpurpose yards and 16 touchdowns. His play should figure big into the overall scheme of the offense. Quarterback Jonathan Blackmon (6-0, 160, Jr.) contributed 1,100 yards and nine touchdowns of his own. The pair give the Bulldoggers two legitimate options in the running game. Combo player Blake Timmons (5-10, 160, So.) can line up as a wide receiver or quarterback depending on the offensive set. As a freshman Timmons had 300 total yards and three touchdowns. Kobe Morgan (6-1, 180, Sr.) is another skill player returning to the field this season. Morgan accounted for 150 yards and is described by coach Henley as “a great blocker on the edge.”

DEFENSE Morgan will flip to the defensive side of the ball to start at free safety. Morgan had 85 tackles, one sack and one defensive touchdown. Joining Morgan in the secondary is Brewer and Timmons. Brewer had limited snaps on defense last year, but did record 35 tackles and two interceptions. Timmons had 26 tackles as a freshman. in the 4-3 defense. Carner had 65 tackles and forced one fumble last year and will play on the offensive line where he started last year. Phelps will join Carner at linebacker after a 2014 season that saw Phelps in a limited role on defense. Despite the lack of playing time, he did record 23 tackles and had an interception to his credit. “We want to play simple, fast defense,” said Henley.

I just want to interact with these kids and teach them the game the best I can,” Sindelar said. On offense Sindelar will employ a pro-style offense but will also incorporate some air-raid principles. Quarterback Colton Hindman (Jr.) will most likely get the nod under center this year in Sindelar’s offense. Meanwhile John Bighorse (Jr.) and Caleb Bruce (Jr.) are likely to split carries out of the backfield. When Hindman drops back to pass Brian Jeffers (So.) will definitely be one of his favorite targets.

Fry runs an aggressive 4-2-5 scheme and will look to frustrate opponents with a flurry of blitzes and different man and zone looks in the secondary. Hayden Henly (Sr.) will be one key player on defense this year after playing on the defensive line last season. “We spent the spring handling the transition to a new system but the kids have been working hard and I think they are as excited as I am to get to work,” Sindelar said.

OFFENSE Head coach Matt Hagebusch has a couple of questions to answer on offense, but the running game for the Ironmen will provide more answer than questions. Wyatt Sanders (5-9, 170, Sr.) rushed for 368 yards and three touchdowns last year in a limited role, while Tarrell Collins (5-11, 190, Jr.) added 625 yards rushing and 10 touchdowns. The pair will handle the rock for the Ironmen and look to jumpstart the offense early in the season. “We return two of our top running backs from 2014, We will rely on them heavily early on while we break in a new quarterback,” said coach Hagebusch. The offensive line figures into that equation as well. Having stability up front will only give a younger, inexperienced quarterback confidence. Jakob Barnes (6-3, 280, Jr.) will start at center, while Lucas Owens (6-0, 235) will start at tackle. The tandem need to help younger players mature and prepare for the rigors of a long season. “For the

first time in four years we will have an open race at quarterback and linebacker. It will be really exciting to see our guys compete and work this spring and summer to determine who will step up and fill some key spots left open by graduation,” said Hagebusch. DEFENSE With seven returning starters to the defensive side of the ball the Ironmen are confident they have the nucleus of a solid defense. Coach Hagebusch mentioned the race at linebacker, but one position on firm ground is nose guard. Petey Knight (6-2, 250, Sr.) returns to dominate inside. Last season he had 92 tackles and 13 sacks; 24 of those tackles were for a loss. Barnes is another player on the D-line with big time numbers. He recorded 45 tackles and seven sacks last year. The secondary will feature Cody Smith (6-1, 150, Jr.) and Ethan Foster (5-9, 160, Sr.) at the corner positions. Smith grabbed three interceptions last year with 38

tackles, while Foster had two picks and 28 tackles. Sanders will move to safety where his athleticism and speed come into play. Sanders accounted for 85 tackles, six sacks and two interceptions. “Experience in the secondary and along the defensive line will have to help us early on as we figure out our situation at linebacker,” said Hagebusch. Look for the Ironmen to base the defense out of a 5-2 set, but as linebackers develop, that could change. A tough district schedule will test them early.

The swarm of players expected to create success includes wide receiver Josh Blackburn (5-11, 150, Sr.) along with fullbacks Tel Hawkins (5-10, 165, Sr.) and Devin Custer (5-9, 175, Jr.) joining quarterback Trenton Still (5-9, 160, So.). The Hornets offensive talents will also include Joseph Phelan (63, 185, Jr.), Cody Pechanec (5-9, 145, Jr.) along with the Burdick brothers, Brett (5-8 175, Jr.) and Damean (5-8, 165, Jr.) as well as Dakota Scott (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Kenny Mitchell (5-8, 210, Sr.). DEFENSE Just like the offense, the positions on the Hornets defense may be adjusted in flight as McGlathery determines a game plan for victory. The three-man front should include Tel Hawkins, Joseph Phelan, Brett and Damean Burdick along with

Dakota Scott and Kenny Mitchell while Devin Custer and Trenton Still handle linebacker duties and Josh Blackburn and Cody Pechanec protect in the secondary. The arrival of a talented group of freshmen including Sam McGlathery (5-8, 205, Fr.), Aaron Hunt (5-9, 135, Fr.), Dalton Mackey (5-7, 135, Fr.), Zein Fisher (5-9, 135, Fr.) and Robert Merkey (5-10, 165, Fr.) will provide added depth and skill in a variety of positions.

OFFENSE The Ridgerunners are looking to open it up this season after quarterback Will Amos (6-1, 180, So.) started 10 games as a freshman. Amos accounted for more than 2,300 yards of offense and 20 plus touchdowns last year. That production and experience has given head coach Mike Loyd the confidence to open up the offense and allow his quarterback to make big plays downfield. Wide receivers Spencer Dills (5-10, 180, Sr.) and Dylan Miller (6-1, 170, Jr.) will benefit from Amos and an offense looking to move the chains through the passing game. Miller had more then 400 yards and four touchdowns last season. Brady Phillips (5-11, 175, Jr.) could see time at multiple positions as the coaching staff looks to add speed and agility to several skill positions. “We will run a multiple set, wide open, attacking style of offense with Amos at quarterback. He started 10 games as a freshman. Our goal is to have a winning season and qualify for the playoffs,” said coach Loyd. The offensive line does have a couple of spots that could be filled by younger players, but senior Buck Facio (6-0, 275) will start this season giving the line some stability upfront. As the season draws closer and summer pride comes to an end, the Ridgerunners are confident players will mature and answer the call this season.

1, 225, So.) and Braxton Miller (6-1, 180, Sr.) are two defensive specialists looking to pressure the quarterback and force mistakes. Miller accounted for more than 70 tackles as a junior. The strength may be in the secondary with Houston Hogan (5-7, 150, Sr.) at one of the corner spots. Hogan made more than 40 tackles last year. Dills will join Hogan in the secondary where he grabbed three interceptions last season. Linebacker Austin Butler (5-11, 190, Jr.) has the task of leading the linebackers this season. There will be some new faces joining Butler at linebacker, but look for the group to step up and become a solid unit for coach Loyd. “We will run multiple sets on defense with a lot of movement. Our quickness should be a strength,” said coach Loyd. A tough district will test the Ridgerunners as Collinsville, Coweta and Edison all loom on the schedule.

DEFENSE Look for the defense to stunt, blitz and have a lot of movement on the defensive line. Caleb Jones (6-

NORTHEAST TECHNOLOGY ATHLETE OF THE MONTH

Avori Winesburg - Vinita High School A junior at Vinita High School, Avori Winesburg is a multi-sport athlete and is enrolled at Northeast Tech Center for her first year in the Health Career Program. “I am focusing on the Sports Medicine side of the program. I enjoy helping people,” said Winesburg.

It’s no surprise Winesburg is interested in sports medicine. In her time at Vinita High School she has competed with the softball, cross country, track and basketball teams. “Basketball is my favorite sport. Basketball is a mental and physical sport. I enjoy playing as a team and being a part of a team,” said Winesburg. Her desire to be a team player is a big reason she chose Northeast Tech Center to continue with her education. “This

is my first year so I look forward to meeting new people.”

Finding balance between athletics and schoolwork is never easy, but for Winesburg utilizing her time wisely is how she gets the job done. “How do I balance my time between sports and academics? Carefully. I try to complete all my schoolwork in class so my afterschool and evenings are for sports and I catch up on leftover work on the weekends,” said Winesburg.

OFFENSE “A well balanced attack with the ability to run and pass with several different athletes,” is how Afton head coach Zach Gardner described his offense.

DEFENSE “An aggressive group with a lot of hats around the ball. We return most of our experience on this side of the field,” Gardner said of his defense. *No other information provided by coach.

OFFENSE The Bulldogs struggled with inexperience in 2014 when they finished with a 1-9 record. Head coach Darrin Wegner believes this season will be different for his team. “We took our lumps last year with a young team,” Wegner said. “We feel like we will be much improved this year with the experience we have coming back.” Wegner is referring to his nine starters that are returning to the offense. This core of players, with another offseason of work under their belts, is poised to have a breakout season. Quarterback Brandon Weaver (6-3, 205, Sr.) returns to lead the balanced Bulldog offense. Weaver threw for 2,302 passing yards and threw 15 touchdowns. He also picked up 450 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. His production will be vital for the Bulldogs. A talented core of wide receivers returns to the team to give Weaver a multitude of weapons to choose from. Gabe Simpson (6-2, 175, So.) proved he could become the next big receiver after finishing with 173 receiving yards and two touchdowns as a freshman. Trestin January (5-8, 140, Sr.) is a quick receiver with good hands. He gives defenses nightmares in the short passing game. He can take a slant route to the house if he gets the space. He finished with 401 receiving yards and two touchdowns. Hayden Cunningham (5-10, 172, Sr.) finished with 339 receiving yards and he adds depth to the receiver unit. River Carroll (5-9, 155, Jr.) will take over at running back.

WELCH WILDCATS

COACH: RYAN GLEAVES ENROLLMENT: 102 LAST 5 YEARS: 2010 - 8-3 2011 - 10-2 2012 - 6-5 2013 - 2-8 2014 - 0-10 OFFENSE The Wildcats haven’t had a winning record since 2012, a fact that this year’s team is eager to change.

DEFENSE Eight starters return on defense for the Bulldogs. This unit should benefit greatly from the experience returning. A few familiar faces from the offense appear on the defensive side of the ball as well. Cunningham and Simpson roam the secondary from the two safety positions. Kongmeng Vang (5-9, 175, Sr.) is the heart and the signal caller for this defense. He is a physical linebacker with good tackling skills. Justice Sills (6-3, 270, Sr.) is the anchor on the defensive line. He causes problems for opposing offensive lines, and makes it difficult for them to open up running lanes. Clint Rogers (5-10, 205, Jr.) is an aggressive defensive end who has a plethora of moves in his arsenal. He can use the spin move, or he can bulldoze offensive tackles. Either way, his pass rush is one key to forcing turnovers.

At quarterback the Wildcats will turn to Gunner Johnson (6-1, 165, So.). Johnson started last season as a freshman so he will have an added measure of experience this season. Running back Seth Chapman (5-6, 150, Jr.) will be a player Johnson leans on heavily this season. Getting 63 carries last year Chapman ran for 350 yards and one touchdown. Fellow running back Josh Baker (5-4, 150, So.) will also get a good amount of carries this year for the Wildcats. When Johnson does drop back to throw he will primarily look for tight end Jake Adamson (6-1, 205, Jr.) and wide receiver Austin Vanatta (5-8, 155, Sr.). DEFENSE Defensively the Wildcats will rely on many of the same players they do on offense. Johnson and Baker will

both start at linebacker this year after combining for 64 tackles last season. In the secondary Chapman and Trenton Seigel (5-11, 175, So.) will be the team’s go to players. Jake Davis (5-7, 150, So.) is another player to watch on the Welch defense this year. An athletic and versatile player, Davis may line up anywhere from cornerback to linebacker this year depending on the situation and matchup. VINITA HORNETS Coach: MIKE CHRISTY Enrollment: 505

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Jay Sept. 10 – vs. Nowata Sept. 18 – vs. Dewey Sept. 25 – at Cleveland Oct. 2 – at McClain Oct. 9 – vs. Catoosa Oct. 15 – at Cascia Hall Oct. 23 – vs. Wagoner Oct. 30 – at Oologah Nov. 6 – vs. Miami Photo by Michael Mayberry

Quick Hits: The Hornets have advanced to the playoffs just three times in the past decade. The last appearance coming in 2010.

The non-district slate of Jay, Nowata and Dewey are all familiar opponents for Vinita. The Hornets last swept all three of those teams in 2010. Vinita has won 11 of the last 15 meetings with Nowata. The Ironmen are gaining ground however, with wins in the last three contests.

OFFENSE Vinita started off the 2014 season with a 3-2 record, but the offense sputtered in the final five games and the Hornets struggled to score points. Coming into 2015, coach Mike Christy is excited about the guys he has returning and what they bring to the table. “We are very excited about the returning starters, the work ethic and attitude that the upper and younger classes have put into becoming better as a team,” Christy said. Christy has nine starters returning to his run heavy offense in 2015. The Wing-T is designed to focus on running the football, but Christy said his team has the ability to throw when they need to. Running back Dayton Bowlin (6-2, 200, Sr.) will be the focal point of the Hornet offense. Last season, he had 66 carries for 484 yards, and four of those carries went for a touchdown. His workload will be increased this season. Alex Kauffman (6-0, 180, Jr.) and Chris Armijo (5-11, 185, Sr.) join Bowlin in the backfield. The trio had great balance last year and will aim to repeat that. Kauffman carried the ball 61 times for 400 yards and four touchdowns, while Armijo finished with 54 carries for 233

yards. Drake Ward (5-11, 240, Sr.) and Dylan Enyart (6-0, 285, Sr.) headline the experienced offensive line.

DEFENSE On defense, eight starters return to their positions from 2014, many of them are two-way players. Bowlin, Armijo and Kauffman make up the linebacker corps for the Hornets. Armijo finished with 47 solo tackles, 25 assisted tackles and a sack. Bowlin came up with 25 solo tackles, 28 assisted tackles and one and a half sacks. Kauffman recorded 25 solo tackles and 14 assisted tackles. Enyart brings the outside pressure from his defensive end position. Last season, he finished with 13 solo tackles and 20 assisted tackles. Stefan Frost (5-11, 235, Sr.) will be tasked with plugging up the running lanes in the middle. His strength makes him a valuable asset at the nose guard position. “We are going to be an aggressive, attacking defense,” Christy said.

Dayton Bowlin - Vinita High School Running back Dayton Bowlin is a player that fans need to get to know this year with the Hornets operating out of a base Wing-T formation and Bowlin being the center of that attack. Last year Bowlin got 66 carries and racked up 484 yards, good for over seven yards per carry. Bowlin also had four rushing touchdowns in 2014 and should see all his numbers go up this fall. Bowlin is also a powerlifter and a member of the track team at Vinita. Outside of athletics Bowlin is a member of the National Honor Society and a volunteer firefighter

for the Bowlin Springs Volunteer Fire Department. When asked about his goals for this year Bowlin said he wants to be the type of athlete that others want to follow. “My goal this season is to help drive Vinita’s football team to the playoffs and to be an example for the future Vinita athletes that hard work pays off,” Bowlin said. For that hard work and dedication to his athletics and other activities Dayton Bowlin is the Vinita Athlete of the Month.

Northeastern Oklahoma A&M

Norsemen ready to take game to next level

24

By Jim Ellis To paraphrase Rodney Dangerfield, the Northeastern A&M football program gets no respect, no respect at all. But that is perfectly OK with Golden Norse head coach Ryan Held heading into the 2015 season. “We will be picked second-to-last in the conference. I know that. That’s fine. That’s fine,” said Held, who is entering his second season at the NEO helm. “My second year at Highland (Community College in Kansas), we were picked second-to-last or third-tolast and we were one touchdown drop away against Dodge City (Kansas) from winning the league at the buzzer. “I don’t worry about preseason predictions. I am not predicting anything. All I am going to worry about is getting better and getting wins.” The Golden Norse won three of their final four games to finish 5-6 in Held’s first season. He succeeded Sherard Poteete, who resigned after one season to become offensive coordinator at Southeast Missouri State. NEO finished play in the Southwest Junior College Football Conference with a 1-5 record. The lone win was a 27-9 decision at Cisco, Texas. However, the Norsemen finished the season on an upbeat note, routing the Bethany JV 49-0 and Fort Scott, Kansas, 49-7. “Last year we just didn’t play very well. We didn’t,” Held said. “I thought the Fort Scott game was nice for us. We played well against Cisco. I came here to beat the Navarros, the Trinity Valleys, the Blinns. That is why we have to play better. I am not putting it all on us because they played really well, were more experienced and were better football teams.” Held thinks three areas that caused problems in 2014 have been bolstered. “We’ve got to play better at the quarterback spot, take care of the ball, be better on third down and we’ve got to be better on defense,” he said. “I think if we do that, we can be in every single football game. I really do.” For the first time since the 1999 season, the Golden Norsemen return a 1,000-yard rusher. Cameron Booty (Jenks) rushed for 1,127 yards on 207 carries with nine touchdowns as a freshman. Former National Football League kick returner Josh Scobey rushed for 1,171 yards as a freshman at NEO in 1998 before adding 1,135 yards as a sophomore in ‘99. The quarterback race should be interesting, with as many as six players battling for the

An eight-year veteran of the diamond, Madi Barnes will start at shortstop this season for the Lady Wardogs. Head coach Lauren Strack is excited to see what the season holds in store for Barnes. Her passion for the game is obvious when she’s on the field. “I love the competitiveness and the fact that softball is a game of failure and that you will not be perfect every single at bat,” said Barnes. That drive to continually improve comes from years of practice and always working to become a better player. The senior expects to play basketball and run track later this year for Miami High School. Barnes enjoys the challenges of being a student-athlete and plays hard for her teammates.

The Wardogs have a lot to look forward to this season on the gridiron. Senior running back Christian Folks returns to give head coach James Cheatham a spark on offense. Folks love for the game is obvious when you watch him play. “I love the entire game of football. I love the physical part as well as the mental part. Playing beside some of my closest friends and being part of a team is what I love most,” said Folks. Expectations set by the seniors on the team and the coaching staff are high, but Folks believes they have the pieces in place to be a good football team this season. “I have very high expectations for the Wardogs. The majority of last years players are returning and will be seniors this year. As well as many juniors who are stepping up to help out and win games,” said Folks. Once football season comes to an end, Folks will turn his focus to the baseball and powerlifting teams.

Quick Hits: The Zebras offense saved the best for last in 2014, scoring a combined 64 points against Sapulpa and Bartlesville. Claremore scored just 50 points in the previous eight games combined.

Claremore beat Memorial in the first round of the 2012 playoffs. It was the Zebras first playoff win since 2003 vs. Bishop Kelley. Claremore last made the semifinals in 1987.

Since a brief four year hiatus from 2006-2010, Claremore is just 1-4 against long-time rival Pryor. The two schools rivalry dates back to 1920 and was unbroken from 1923 to 2006. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 7-4 2012 - 10-2 2011 – 4-6 2010 – 4-7

OFFENSE 2014 was an injury plagued season for the Zebras, but a positive from the season was getting playing time for some younger players, and coach Rob Gilbreath hopes that he can build on that experience this season with those players. They will be running a spread wing offense, focusing on a strong running game, and will only be returning three starters from last season that was very heavy in seniors in regards to

Aaron McCollough skill position. Leading the way in the ground game will be Keegan Hisey (6-0, 175, Jr.). In limited action last season, Hisey averaged over five yards a carry on 28 attempts. The triggerman at quarterback is Aaron McCollough (6-1, 180, Jr.). Last season McCollough was 19-47 for 194 yards. He will have a couple targets at his disposal in Paul Hoke (6-3, 190, Sr.) at wide receiver and Cole Williams (6-1, 220, Sr.) at tight end. Hoke had two touchdowns last season and hopes to add to those numbers this season. Anchoring the offensive line will be Lane Hembree (6-2, 240, Jr.). DEFENSE The defense for the Zebras will return six starters from last season. Coach Gilbreath will have them operating out of a 4-4 base. He is going to be looking for his team to be a physical one this season, stat-

ing that they have a strong front seven. The linebacker crew looks to be loaded this season. Derek Brasel (5-11, 190, Sr.) will be leading the way at linebacker. Brasel had 65 tackles last season and looks to up that number this season. Joining him at linebacker will be fellow senior Hunter Thrasher (6-3, 180, Sr.). Brady Kropp (6-1, 200, Jr.) is the team’s leading returning tackler who compiled 90 stops in 2014. Up front will be Roger Starkey (6-0, 260, Sr.) at defensive tackle, who had 42 stops last season. Coming off the end will be Gus Espanoza (6-3, 190, Jr.). In the defensive backfield, Alex Moore (6-0, 170, Sr.) comes back. He had two interceptions last season and will be looking for more to help shut down the opponents’ passing game. Coach Gilbreath said that his team is young but is very athletic and they should be exciting. What they have been working on is getting the younger kids getting caught up with the older ones. Also, he has been counting on more players to take on leadership roles, stressing to his players to lead by example.

OFFENSE After reaching the Class 3A playoffs last season, the Eagles return experience in a variety of positions as head coach Jody Iams enters his 17th season on the sidelines as head coach. Seven starters return to the Eagles’ Wing-T formation including a group of skill position players capable of making big plays. Tristan Diaz (5-11, 155, So.) made 11 starts last season as a freshman and completed 50 percent of his pass attempts including 10 touchdowns. Johnny Pryor (5-9, 165, Jr.), who averaged 5.3 yards per carry, and Miguel Fulgencio (6-1, 190, So.), who made his share of big plays averaging 7.7 yards per carry plus 23.7 yards per catch, will return for 2015. “Tristan proved he could handle the pressures at quarterback,” Iams said. “That will allow us to open things up a little more. Miguel and Johnny are two guys that know how to make things happen.” Adding offensive potential will be Austin Muns (5-9, 210, Sr.) at fullback plus the big-play potential of Daniel Cowan (5-7, 135, So.), who was a state track finalist in the 100 meters and 200 meters as a freshman. Reese Robinette (5-11, 245, Jr.) and Tanner Pilgrim (5-11, 200, Jr.) return to the line along with Jackson Saul (6-0, 250, Jr.).

DEFENSE The Eagles have adjusted their scheme to a 4-2-5 alignment and will showcase the play of linebackers Hunter Chasisson (6-1, 215, Jr.), who made 76 tackles last season, along with Miguel Fugencio that totaled 72 stops in 2014. “Hunter is our coach on the field, a leader that knows the system and Miguel has that skill to chase down a ball carrier that you can’t coach,” notes Iams. Reese Robinette and Tyler Holmes (5-11, 175, Sr.) return at defensive ends and the Eagles will rely upon the experience of Nathan Stritzke (5-9, 165, So.) at safety along with Clay Moreland (5-10, 145, Sr.) in the secondary. “We survived and made the playoffs last year with a group of young, gutsy guys that now have a season of experience,” said Iams. “I’m expecting to open the door to more opportunities in 2015.

OFFENSE Jon Eddy takes the reins as the head coach of the Foyil Panthers this year and brings with him a pro-style offense. Trey Hinton (5-11, 165, Jr.) and Austin Morrow (5-11, 160, So.) figure to battle for the quarterback spot in that offensive system and both quarterbacks bring a strong skill set to the table. The Panthers also have several talented backs to lean on this season. That group is headlined by Matt Bolton (510, 175, So.). Braden Gonzales (6-0, 170, So.) and Chris Austin (5-9, 150, Sr.) complete the group to form a talented trio of performers out of the backfield. DEFENSE On defense Bolton and Gonzales will be the team’s

leaders starting at inside linebacker in Eddy’s 3-4 scheme. Austin and Morrow will bookend the two talented inside backers as the team’s starting outside linebackers. All four linebackers will work behind Dalton Ward (5-10, 185, Sr.). Ward will be counted on to do a good portion of the dirty work up front starting at defensive tackle. “I’m very excited to watch these young men find success in their hard work and commitment in building a lasting tradition. They have a great opportunity to have a successful season that will snowball into something great for our town,” Eddy said. 2014 - 2-8 2013 - 3-8 2012 - 2-8 2011 - 8-3 2010 - 6-4 Enrollment: 279 Schedule: Sept. 3 – vs. Inola Sept. 11 – at Foyil Sept. 18 – vs. Salina Sept. 25 – at Oklahoma Union Oct. 2 – at Haskell Oct. 9 – vs. Nowata Oct. 15 – at Caney Valley Oct. 23 – vs. Wyandotte Oct. 30 – at Pawhuska Nov. 6 – vs. Commerce

OFFENSE The Green Dragons finished with a 2-8 record in 2014. With a senior laden team, coach Gary Kirk has a chance to improve that record in 2015. All-District running back Zack Eidschun (6-3, 180, Sr.) returns after rushing for 391 yards on 99 carries. He also had 263 receiving yards. The Green Dragons are deep at that position, with Dalton Bunch (5-10, 150, Sr.) returning to back Eidschun up. He ran for 176 yards and had 102 receiving yards. Gavin Feathers (58, 150, So.) returns to his

quarterback position after he gained valuable experience as a freshman. Dylan Czapansky (6-3, 215, Jr.) returns to the offensive line after a productive season. He will anchor that group. Casey Booth (5-9, 140, Sr.) will step into the impact wide receiver role.

DEFENSE The Green Dragon defense will be the strength of the team. Nine starters return to this unit, and they have a deep senior class on this side of the ball. Alex Ramsey (5-9, 195, Sr.) is the vocal leader from the linebacker position. He recorded 68 tackles in 2014. Corey Murphy (5-11, 160, Sr.) plays strong safety, where he finished with 49 tackles last season. John Humler (5-9, 155, So.) made a huge impact as a freshman playing next to Ramsey. Humler finished with 60 tackles, and he is expected to see that number go up. Nathaniel Lewis (6-0, 180, Sr.) and Jake Everett (6-3, 220, Sr.) play on both offensive and defensive lines. Both will make big plays this season.

Linebacker Derek Brasel is the leader of the Claremore Zebra defense. Last season as a junior, Brasel recorded 65 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, a couple of pass break-ups and forced fumbles. Now entering his senior year, Brasel expects that tackle number to see a significant boost. Brasel said his favorite part of playing football is the big collisions. He is a physical force for the Zebra defense, and his love for big hits proves that. Outside of football, Brasel is a wrestler and is a part of the Claremore track team. After high school, Brasel wants to attend college so he can become a PA in sports medicine. In 10 years, Brasel plans on running a successful practice where he takes care of injured athletes, either at the high school or college level. The Zebras will be ready for the 6A-II gauntlet in 2015, and Brasel will lead the way. For all of his hard work on the field, and his dedication to Claremore athletics, Derek Brasel is the Claremore Athlete of the Month.

Quick Hits: Oologah’s state finals appearance in 2014 was the first for the school since winning the 1998 Class 3A state championship against Spiro. The Mustangs and Catoosa Indians will meet for the eighth consecutive year in week seven. Oologah owns a three game winning streak in the series and has won six of the those seven. Oologah has scored in double figures in 75 of its last 76 regular season contests. Collinsville is the only opponent to hold them to single digits during that stretch, beating the Mustangs 14-7 in 2012.

VERDIGRIS CARDINALS

OFFENSE After going 7-4 last year and making it to the Class 3A playoffs the Verdigris Cardinals bring back seven offensive starters and should feature a balanced attack with playmakers both in the backfield and on the outside. Running backs Dylan Hight (5-9, 170, Jr.) and Hunter Hutchison (5-10, 180, Jr.) are both back this year after having productive sophomore seasons. In 2014 Hight ran for 707 yards and had 13 touchdowns while Hutchison scampered for 300 yards of his own and piled up five touchdowns. When Verdigris does choose to put the ball in the air look for Staton Brasher (6-1, 180, Sr.) and Laurence Daniel (6-0, 225, Sr.) to be on the receiving end of a good chunk of passes. Brasher will start at receiver after making eight catches for 129 yards last year. Daniel meanwhile will start at tight end and is a physical blocker along with being a good pass catcher that averaged 13 yards per catch a year ago. On the offensive line Blaine Saxon (6-2, 250, Jr.) will be expected to be the team’s catalyst in the trenches.

OFFENSE Head coach Brandon Craig will run the spread offense this season thanks in part to the players they have at wide receiver. “We will spread the field and take advantage of our experience at wide receiver. I expect to see more yards and production in the passing game this year,” said coach Craig. Two of those receivers coming back are Breyden DeSpain (6-2, 205, Sr.) and Keenan Ferrier (5-8, 160, Jr.). DeSpain accounted for 968 yards on 53 receptions and 10 touchdowns, while Ferrier had 498 yards on 19 receptions and six touchdowns. Quarterback Casey Base (6-1, 205, Jr.) only started four games last season and still threw for 400 yards and four touchdowns. That experience is a head start to the 2015 season. The offensive line will feature Cameron Wood (6-6, 260, Sr.). Wood can have the type of senior season that brings the college recruiters to his front door. Overall the offense will look to keep opposing defenses off balance and take advantage of their mistakes and match up issue. “It was disappointing to lose in the state championship game last year, but I think it will motivate our team to try and return. The experience should be a benefit heading into the season,” said Craig.

OOLOGAH MUSTANGS

DEFENSE The Mustangs return nine starters on the defensive side of the ball. That should serve notice to the rest

Brock Martin

DEFENSE With seven defensive starters back this year the Cardinals defense will be a unit that preys on weaker opponents and punishes them for their mistakes. On the defensive line Justin Cody (6-0, 225, Sr.) and Triston Willis (6-0, 245, Sr.) are two players with the size to overpower opponents and the speed to slice their way into the backfield and be disruptive forces. Last season Cody made 76 tackles and recorded four sacks while Willis made 47 tackles and added six sacks. Just behind the two talented defensive linemen will be where fans can find Hight wreaking havoc at linebacker. As a sophomore Hight made 120 tackles, posted seven sacks and also intercepted a pass. Safety Devin Bressie (5-6, 130, Sr.) may be a bit undersized for his position but his production is anything but small. In his junior season Bressie made 72 tackles, intercepted three passes and broke up seven passes. Acie Carpenter (5-9, 170, Jr.) will also be a key defensive back in the Verdigris lineup after making 30 tackles last season, recovering five fumbles and breaking up 10 passes.

of the district that when you play Oologah, your offense will be tested to their maximum ability. Leading the way is D1 player and VYPE Top 100 selectee Jimmy McKinney (6-2, 225, Sr.). McKinney accounted for an amazing 192 tackles, four sacks and three pass break-ups last year. Another crazy stat is 25 of those tackles were for a loss. On McKinney’s heels statistically is defensive end Brock Martin (6-3, 205, Jr.). As a sophomore Martin logged 189 tackles, 17 sacks and three fumble recoveries. The pair will turn up the heat on opposing teams and force quarterbacks to make bad decisions. Clayton Downum (5-10, 175, Jr.) joins McKinney at linebacker and brings nearly 100 tackles and three interceptions to the field. Logan Armstrong (5-10, 150, Sr.) and Rush O’Connor (5-11, 170, Jr.) bring experience to the secondary. Armstrong had 10 pass breakups and 72 tackles last year, while O’Connor had 80 tackles and three pass breakups. The pair will be responsible for several coverage sacks throughout the season. “With the amount of experience we have coming back, we should be able to expand our defensive playbook and move our defensive fronts more this year. I feel our defense should be the strength of our team,” said Craig.

OFFENSE FINISH – it’s one word that describe the Pirates quest to capture treasures in 2015 after winning 25-27 games the past two years including last season reaching the Class 3A semifinals. The Pirate offensive assault expects more of the same after averaging 56 points per game while snapping the ball every 10 seconds and showcasing VYPE Top 100 standouts Mason Fine at quarterback and wide receiver Jason Pirtle. Fine (5-11, 165, Sr.) set the Oklahoma single season and career mark for touchdowns by passing for 5,006 yards and 71 touchdowns in 2014 to raise his career total to 8,846 yards and 113 scores while earning VYPE Mr. Football honors. Pirtle (6-2, 195, Sr.) made 99 receptions for 2,096 yards and 29 touchdowns last year including his single playoff game record setting performance of 21 catches in the state semifinals. Among the 8 returning starters on offense, head coach Matt Hennesy will go to Tyler Panther (6-1, 185, Sr.) to take pressure off Pirtle while Jaren Dirtseller (6-1, 205, Jr.) will provide a power-type running back to attack opponents committed to stopping the pass.

SALINA WILDCATS

OFFENSE The 2014 season ended in the first round of the playoffs for the Salina Wildcats. Nowata was able to tame the Wildcats’ rushing atMatt Ogle tack, and defeated them 4613. This season, coach Matt Williams returns only four offensive starters, but three of those are his best skill players. Williams has a trio of seniors returning to his backfield. This is vital to the success of his team because they run the triple option system. Fullback Billy Shea (6-0, 220, Sr.) will spearhead the trio of backs. Shea ran for 435 yards and five touchdowns on 94 carries, which led the team. He will be heavily relied on this season. Running backs Matt Ogle (6-0, 180, Sr.) and Bryce Kerns (5-10, 160, Sr.) round out the trio in the backfield. Ogle ran for 10 touchdowns, while

Alex Hix (6-1, 190, Sr.), credited with 9 sacks amidst his 236 stops last season, also returns at linebacker in the Pirates 3-4 alignment along with Jared Dirsteller, a dominant blitzer who made 17 tackles for loss last year. Jeremy Woodruff (5-8, 165, Sr.) will again use his quickness to create problems for opponents off the edge at defensive end while Cutter Stamper (5-10, 145 Sr.), another three-year starter, returns to cornerback after stealing 6 pass interceptions in 2014. “This senior class is hungry to finish their mission,” said Hennesy, pointing out the fact that the 2015 seniors have not lost a regular season game since their freshman year. “We started this together in 2012 and barring injuries plus a little luck, we have a legitimate shot to lift the gold ball as state champions in December.”

Kerns carried the ball 92 times. Balance between these three guys will be key for the Wildcats offense.

DEFENSE Williams is changing his defensive philosophy from a 5-2 to a 4-3 this season, in an effort to put more speed on the field. He is returning eight starters on this side of the ball, some of which play both ways. Jared Mellowbug (6-0, 220, Sr.) returns to his defensive end position, where he racked up 71 tackles and six sacks last season. Shea will captain the defense at middle linebacker. Last season, he recorded 96 tackles. “We return the majority of our kids on the defensive side of the ball,” Williams said. “We are excited to get on the field and see the progress of our young kids.”

“We should be an explosive offensive team with multiple playmakers at each skill position. We are excited about the opportunity to compete at a high level this season. Many of our players have started or seen significant action the past three or four season,” said coach Lippe.

OFFENSE This season the Adair Warriors are poised to make some waves in Class 2A. Leading the way is VYPE Top 100 selectee B.J. Bradbury (6-2, 180, Jr.). DEFENSE Bradbury is one of the top quarterNine starters return for the Warriors on backs in the state passing for 3,886 defense. CHOUTEAU-MAZIE WILDCATS OFFENSE Mike Inglett will take the field as the new head coach of the Wildcats this year with five starters back on offense. Handling the running back duties for Choteau will be the tandem of Chris King (6-0, 190, Sr.) and Curtis Smallwood (5-11, 180, Jr.). The passing game for the Wildcats will feature three talented receivers in Trevor Searcy (6-0, 160, Jr.), Devon McBride (5-8, 160, So.) and a big target in Darren Hash (6-3, 165, So.). Veteran Ben Cowan (6-2, 260, Sr.), a top 20 state power lifter, will provide leadership and muscle up front along with Joe Quigley (5-10, 175, Jr.). The Wilcats will utilize multiple wing formations and a good dose of misdirection and play action to keep opponents off balance this season.

OFFENSE The Comets enter this season with experience and knowledge of coach Steve Patterson’s system in search of a galaxy filled with stars and victories. Six starters return to the spread attack including quarterback Jarod Hogshooter (5-11, 195, Sr.), who Patterson touts as a tough competitor and the leader of pack. The collection of receiver targets welcomes back the skills of Jon Noe (5-9, 160, Sr.), Colton Capps (6-1, 170, Jr.) and tight end Dexter Nichols (6-2, 245, Sr.). Kansas will count on the talents of Ty Whorton (5-11, 185, Sr.) and Aaron Reeder (5-8, 160, So.) and newcomer Tray Barnett (6-0, 210, Sr.) to energize the running game along with fullback Brenden Robbins (5-9, 210, So.). Last year’s 2A-7 lineman of the year, Jordan Robbins (6-1,290, Sr.) returns to anchor the offensive line at center lining up next to Mark Blizzard (6-0, 210, Sr.) at guard.

KANSAS COMETS

DEFENSE While Cowan and Quigley will make their presence known along the front line, Choteau will be young in the back end with Tyler McMahan (6-0, 210, So.) taking a linebacker spot. Joe Cooper (5-8, 165, Jr.) will return at a linebacker position as well as Zac Primeaux (5-11, 150, Jr.) at free safety. Inglett will go with a base 3-4 defensive set while mixing it up in the secondary. 2015 will be a year the Wildcats will need to grow up fast with a new coach and new offensive and defensive schemes plus the challenge of a district that saw two teams in Adair and Colcord that reached the state quarterfinals in 2014.

DEFENSE The 4-3 formation welcomes the return of experience among the front seven players as Dexter Nichols and Jordan Robbins join Jarron Yeager (6-0, 190, Jr.) on the defensive front while linebackers Ty Whorton, Mark Blizzard and Brenden Robbins bring an aggressive and attacking mindset. Chance Wilson (6-1, 175, Sr.) will captain the secondary with Tray Barnett and Jarod Hogshooter at safety while the combination of Jon Noe, Colton Capps and Aaron Reeder can provide coverage at cornerback. “The pieces are coming together in our second year,” said Patterson, “and with a year of experience under their belts, I’m confident our kids will be rewarded for their offseason efforts.” Changes in the schedule should benefit opportunities for a successful blast-off to the 2015 season with three of the first four games to be played at home.

It’s like the whole school and town are on the same team as we support each other,” Reese said. Reese is also actively involved in FFA and shows livestock. For his contributions on and off the field and his dedication to the football team, Caleb Reese is VYPE’s Athlete of the Month from Pryor.

PRYOR TIGERS Coach:

Enrollment: 733

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Claremore Sept. 11 – vs. Wagoner Sept. 18 – vs. McAlester Sept. 25 – vs. Edison Oct. 2 – at Grove Oct. 9 – vs. Tahlequah Oct. 15 – at Coweta Oct. 23 – vs. East Central Oct. 30 – at Collinsville Nov. 6 – at NOAH

Quick Hits: Coach Jason Freeman departed Pryor after leading the Tigers to a 17-15 mark in three seasons. New head coach Jeremy Branchcomb was the offensive coordinator at Checotah the past two seasons.

The Tigers closed the season out with a 60-7 blitzing of NOAH. It was the highest scoring output for Pryor in the past two decades. In spite of missing the playoffs, Pryor earned a crown jewel on the schedule when it defeated the eventual Class 4A champion Wagoner 24-7 in week two. The Bulldogs had won the last four in the series coming in. Last 5 Years: 2014 - 5-5 2013 - 8-4 2012 - 4-6 2011 – 9-3 2010 – 4-6

OFFENSE The Pryor Tigers roared out to a 4-1 start in 2014 before injuries and inconsistent play got in their way. In 2015, the Tigers will be starting anew. Former head coach Jason Freeman left Pryor to coach the line at Moore. Taking his place is Jeramy Branchcomb, who already has the guys doing the right thing. “I’m really excited about the season,” Branchcomb said. “The guys have been really committed this summer and have been putting in the work it takes to be successful.” With the departure of VYPE Top 100 quarterback Brennon Barth; the Tigers will have

to figure out who’s going to run the offense. Branchcomb brings the pistol offense to Pryor and plans getting multiple playmakers involved. Spencer Henson (6-1, 240, Sr.) is a big, physical running back who will see his fair share of carries. Leading the way for Henson is fullback Caleb Reese (5-10, 200, Sr.). These two will spearhead the power running attack. A power running game can’t be successful without a tough offensive line. Fortunately, the Tigers have just that. Dylan Couch (6-3, 295, Sr.) is the most experienced lineman and anchor of the group. Michael Lansaw (6-3, 250, Jr.) is a physical blocker who can open up running lanes. Austin LaFave (5-10, 165, Jr.) will be relied on to make impactful catches when the Tigers are in trouble. DEFENSE The defense will be the strength for the Tigers in 2015. With seven starters and other players with significant playing time returning, they will have the depth and physicality to keep them in games when the offense isn’t on. Linebacker Christian Campbell (6-1, 220, Jr.) is the leader of the hard-hitting group. His tackling ability is a good example for his teammates to follow. Caleb Reese (5-10, 200, Sr.) is another physical linebacker that adds depth to that unit. He has good speed and close out ability. Dakota Day (5-10, 180, Jr.) plays outside linebacker and adds depth to Branchcomb’s 4-4 defensive scheme. The scheme requires a solid core of backers and Day solidifies a group already containing Reese and Campbell. Up front, the Tigers are a physical group. Logan Baker (6-2,

230, Jr.) leads that group. He had a productive season in 2014 both stopping the run and rushing the passer. His junior season will need to be his best. In the secondary, the Tigers will be incredibly deep. There’s a chance they could go two-deep at each secondary position. Gage Mendiville (6-0, 155, Jr.) plays cornerback and is often tasked with shutting down the opponent’s most valuable passing target. His ability to lock guys up on the line of scrimmage makes him incredibly valuable.

Go Tigers!
