Bartlesville Mom Month Jill Epperson - Bartlesville Mom Erin Epperson is the No. 1 singles player for the Bartlesville Lady Bruins. At the state tournament, Epperson finished as the runner-up for the No. 1 singles. Epperson’s mother, Jill Epperson, has played a large role in Erin’s athletic career, and has helped her reach this point in her playing career. Jill volunteers during Bartlesville’s home tennis tournaments, and she is a major part of their annual banquets. She has worked the concession stands to help raise money for the tennis team, and she has donated to the all-sports booster club. Jill has always been a huge supporter of her daughter and her daughter’s teammates. “My mom is always at our tournaments,” Erin Epperson said. “She is the ultimate supporter and has a great relationship with all of our players. Something I appreciate is she is a big encourager to non-tennis players who she wants to try the sport out.” Erin has a hectic schedule and her mom is always there to drive her there wherever she needs to go. No matter what sport she was playing, her mom was always there to cheer her and her teammates on. Her mom even drives her to Tulsa every now and then for practice. Erin had strong words for why her mom should be Mom of the Month. “She comes to all of my tennis tournaments and is my biggest supporter,” Erin said. “She is also a huge supporter to my teammates. She has sacrificed a lot so I can try to achieve my goals. She has provided me with all the support I could ever ask for.

Dewey Finishes Strong at State

The Lady Bulldoggers had a strong showing at the 2014 state track meet. They finished just inside the top 10, coming in at ninth place with a team score of 20. Erin Herchock, who was a sophomore in 2014, took home the individual state title in both the 100 meter and 300 meter hurdle races. Coming into the season, Herchock wanted to have a repeat performance, and help her team finish higher.

field could not keep up. Herchock defended her individual titles that she earned in 2014 in the 100 meter hurdles and the 300 meter hurdles. Senior Jaycie Nickerson competed in the 100 and 300 hurdle races alongside Herchock. The 2014 state meet was a struggle for her but this year, she showed how much she improved. She finished right behind Herchock in fourth in the 100 meter hurdles. She stood on the podium alongside Herchock in the 300 meter hurdles, taking

third place.

Overall, the Dewey Lady Bulldoggers made extreme progress from last season. When the meet was over this season, the Lady Bulldoggers had doubled their team score from a year ago, putting them at 40 total points. The jump moved them into sixth place. With Herchock and Jones returning next season, the Lady Bulldoggers hope they can raise their score even higher. At the pace they are on, they are sure to make a significant jump next season. Keep an eye out for the Dewey Lady Bulldoggers track team in 2016. They could have some of the best track athletes in the state.

At the 2015 state track meet, Herchock and the Lady Bulldoggers were ready to compete. They got a huge boost from newcomer Karissa Jones. Jones, who is a freshman, made a huge splash at the state meet. Jones participated in the long jump, the 100 meter dash and the 200 meter dash. She took home a third place finish in the 100, and then she finished in fifth in the 200. That is impressive for a freshman. In the long jump, she was the only freshman to compete and she finished in fifth place, earning her team two points. She has the chance to take home multiple state titles in her time at Dewey.

Herchock entered the state meet ready to defend her titles that she earned as a sophomore. Now a junior, she knew that she would be challenged. However, she rose to the occasion, and the rest of the

Bartlesville High School

How long have you been involved with FCA? I was in FCA in junior high and we are working to make it more active today. Who influenced you to join? Coach McKee. He has inspired me to try to help make FCA at Bartlesville High School more active. How has FCA made an impact in your life, on and off the field? Bartlesville is a great town with a very active FCA chapter as well as a ton of churches that feed our team each week. These people inspire our team to give back to the community as well. We try to do two or three charity events each year and they always make me feel really good. Our team is very close and Coach McKee allows us to pray before every game. This always sets the tone. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My faith has inspired me to try to compete at the best of my ability and hopefully inspire those around me. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? My favorite Bible verse is Psalm 23:4. I love this verse because I know that in life’s battles, the lord is always with me.

Grove Track Shines at State Ridgerunners found the podium multiple times and brought home a bulk of hardware. her first year of high school competition was thrilling and added that she hopes to be able to have the opportunity to win more gold in the future.

Megan Tramel and Lily Jeffries The Grove Lady Ridgerunners track team has made a habit out of finishing among the top teams in the state. In 2014, Grove took third at the Class 5A state meet and the year before the Lady Ridgerunners placed fifth. This year the team was back up to its old tricks placing fifth overall with 36 total team points.

Leading the way for the Lady Ridgerunners was sophomore Keely McLaughlin. Placing first in both the shot put and discus McLaughlin earned 20 points for her team at state. In the shot put McLaughlin won with a throw of 39-04.50 while in the discus she was even more impressive just missing out on the state meet record of 142-03 with a throw of 142-01. Another young star also took home a first place medal for Grove with freshman Megan Tramel winning the pole vault by clearing 11-05. Senior Lily Jeffries also placed in the pole vault taking third place with a mark of 10-06.

“It was very exciting. I was blessed with great coaches, teammates, family and friends that gave me the support and training to make it happen. I hope to make the most of the opportunities presented to me in the next three years to defend that title, Tramel said.

With athletes like Tramel and McLaughlin returning for next season expect the Lady Ridgerunners to once again finish as a top team in the state in 2016 and make another run at their first title since 1997.

On the boys side of things the Ridgerunners placed 15th overall by scoring 11 total points as a team. The only male athlete earning an individual medal for the Ridgerunners was senior Dominic Flores, who placed sixth in the discus with a toss of 148-05. Grove also took home two medals

in relay events, placing in both the 4x400 and 4x800. In the 4x800 the team of Wil Amos, Javier Lara, Garrison Hale and Brady Phillips took fourth place with a time of 8:16.95. In the 4x400 the same four runners earned sixth place with a time of 3:30.18. All of the members of the two relay teams will be back next year for the Ridgerunners except for Lara, who was a senior this year. Along with the three returning members of the relay teams Grove will also get a huge boost from Jake Ingle and Gavin Honeycutt next season. Ingle, qualified for the 3200-meter run this year and will be a senior in 2016 while Honeycutt will just be a junior after qualifying for state in the pole vault as just a sophomore.

With a solid core of runners and athletes back next season fans can also expect big things from the boys track team along with the girls.

Pryor Athlete of the MOnth Kelsie Kerns - Pryor Athlete Pryor junior Kelsie Kerns put together a stellar season on the track this spring. A distance runner, Kerns turned in a time of 5:47.26 in the 1600-meter run at the regional meet in Claremore and took home second place. More important than the medal she won at the regional, Kerns’ time also allowed her to qualify for the state meet in the event.

At the state meet, Kerns turned in an even better time than what she did at regionals, finishing in 5:47.14. That time was good enough to put Kerns in third place and earn the Lady Tigers their only six points of the entire state championship meet. For her effort on the track, Kelsie Kerns is the Pryor Athlete of the Month.

Tyler Rowland

Locust Grove athletes were among those who went ashore to compete during the OSSAA state championships.

Despite the continued delays caused by Mother Nature’s severe weather, 2015 senior Tyler Rowland and 2016 senior-to-be Jason Pirtle earned their tickets to the Class 4A state track meet. Rowland, a state qualifier last year as well, stepped to the medal stand with a leap of 6’ 4” in the high jump to gain a fourth place position. According to head coach David Blevins, there’s little doubt high jump skills are a family tradition as Rowland’s brother,

Anthony Mounce, is the Class 4A state record holder, set in 2010.

Pirtle qualified for the championship meet at Moore in both the 110 and 300m hurdles.

While almost all of the original dates were interrupted by the spring storms, the Class 4A boys golf tournament went off as scheduled as Josh McFarland carried the Pirates flag during the 54-hole event. Playing under the windy conditions at Lake Hefner’s north course, McFarland, just a junior, rallied for second round score of 75 between scores of 82-86.

“Josh made the field as a result of his play around the greens as well as his confidence tee-to-green,” said LG golf coach Justin Brown. As the end of school sporting activities begin, Locust Grove’s Class 4A state

championship basketball team were represented by Rylie Torry and Madison Davis at the Oklahoma Girls Basketball Coaches Association All-State games played at Westmoore High School. The pair will also represent the Pirate nation during the OCA All-State games in July.

VYPE: What are your plans after High School?

By the time I get home and eat, its 9:30 at night, and I haven’t even started my homework. I always try to find creative ways to get my homework done. I’ve done it in the car on the way to gym, and even during lunchtime. Balancing school and gymnastics has always been a struggle, but definitely worth it.

HISTORIC COLEMAN THEATRE IS A ROUTE 66 DESTINATION MIAMI, Okla. – Located on Route 66 and nestled in the northeast corner of Oklahoma, the Coleman Theatre is a beacon for tourists from around the world.

Every year visitors flock to the historic vaudeville theatre to experience the Spanish Colonial Mission-style exterior and the Louis XV interior. They marvel at the use of gargoyles, dolphins, cherubs and faces throughout the facility. And let’s not forget about the “Mighty Wurlitzer” pipe organ.

The organ was built in 1928 and delivered for installation on Feb. 21, 1929. It sold for $35,000 in 1929 and is the only Wurlitzer organ built in 1928 that is in its original home.

The theatre, built by George L. Coleman Sr., was built in less than a year at a cost of $600,000. At the time it was built, Miami was the third largest city in Oklahoma to have a theatre with a refrigeration system for stable temperatures all year. The Coleman Theatre opened on April 18, 1929, to a full house of 1,600, each paying $1.00 per ticket. Although the theatre transitioned from a vaudeville theatre to a movie house over the years, it has never been “dark.” Among the many stars who have performed on the Coleman Theatre stage are Will Rogers, Tom Mix, Sally Rand, Bing Crosby, Jim Thorpe and Moscelyn Larkin. Another favorite stop on a tour of the Coleman is a visit to the Coleman Ballroom. The original plans for the facility included a ballroom, however, when construction was completed in 1929, it was never finished.

The ballroom was an open space of plastered walls and ceilings. It was used over the years by the Masons, as a place for building sets and for local artist Charles Banks Wilson to paint the murals that are in the Oklahoma State Capitol. Now the ballroom is the perfect location for weddings, receptions, reunions, conferences and celebrations.

In addition to the beautiful theatre and ballroom, the Coleman features a “Celebrity Park,” a serene pocket park with a fountain and benches. It also is home to the “Wall of Fame.” The “Wall of Fame” recognizes those with ties to the community

that have achieved high levels of professional accomplishment and have contributed to the community. There are currently eight individuals that have been selected for the “Wall of Fame” -- Charles Banks Wilson, David Froman, Steve Owens, Steve & Cassie Gaines, Moscelyne Larkin, Nick Calcagno and David Osborne. The Coleman Theatre is more than just a theatre and ballroom … it’s a destination! If you are traveling Route 66 or spending time on Grand Lake, make sure you put this majestic theatre on your list of things to do.

If you would like more information about the historic Coleman Theatre or to view a list of upcoming events, please visit colemantheatre.org or find us on Facebook under Coleman Theatre Beautiful. The Coleman Theatre is located at 103 North Main St. in Miami, OK. The ticket office may be reached at 918-540-2425.

The Wardog Wire

VYPE Magazine sat down with Miami athletic director James Cheatham to get a state of the union report from Wardog country grams. Our students worked hard and are buying in to what the coaches are building and working towards.

VYPE: Your teams at Miami had some nice success this spring. Your boys soccer team made a nice run in the playoffs, you qualified a golfer for state, several athletes qualified for the state track meet and your girls soccer team had a really solid season. What does it mean to all the programs at Miami to have that kind of success in a particular season? Cheatham: Our springssports did enjoy a fun and successful season. Coach David Douthit, Matt LeFay, Rick Simpson and Rusty Mercer provide great direction for our pro-

VYPE: You guys are listed as the top team in Class 4A according to the ADM list but compete at 5A for nearly every other sport. Do you anticipate a full time move to 5A in the near future for the Wardogs? If so what challenges will that pose?

Cheatham: Actually, we don’t anticipate a full move up, our enrollment is down some and some other around us are up. Now that is never a guarantee until July and OSSAA reports. But we feel pretty good right now, but we will still play some sports in 5A that is the nature of the beast being a school on the bubble on ADM. VYPE: What types of things do you hope the future holds for

Miami athletics? Cheatham: Our motto for the last few years is “Continuously Moving in a Positive Direction” as coaches we strive to make decisions that move our athletes in a positive direction daily… Athletics is a tough field of battle and there are days you are knocked backwards or down but our students and coaches at Miami are resilient and we will continue to work to represent our community and school in a positive manner.

Lady Hornets claim Class 4A gold for second time in three years. time of 49.76.

Rounding out the list of medalists for the Lady Hornets was senior Taylor Steinhoff. With a throw of 38-09, Steinhoff placed fifth in the shot put and earned her team two additional points.

Back in 2013 the Vinita Lady Hornets won the Class 4A state track title just edging runnerup Plainview by nine points. This year those two teams again finished one and two in the state but this spring Vinita blew the doors off the competition scoring 92 total points to Plainview’s 62.

The biggest chunk of points for the Lady Hornets came from the relay events where Vinita earned 60 total points with three first place finishes. In the 4x100 relay the team of juniors Carsyn Spurgeon, Bailee Orr, Natalie Carr and senior Keely Dickson took home the gold with a time of 49.59. In the 4x200 and 4x400 the Lady Hornets also took first with times of 1:43.96 and 4:03.40 respectively. The 4x200 team VYPEOK.COM

was comprised of Spurgeon, Orr, Dickson and senior Callie Miers while the 4x400 team was made up of Spurgeon, Orr, Dickson and sophomore Rylie Roach.

Spurgeon and Dickson also turned in first place finishes of their own as individuals. Spurgeon took home first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 24.32 and Dickson came in first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 58.41. Orr finished behind Dickson in the 400 but still medaled, taking sixth place with a time of 1:01.99.

Carr also brought home two medals with a second place finish in the 100 hurdles and a sixth place in the 300 hurdles. In the 100 hurdles Carr finished with a time of 15.34 and in the 300 hurdles she crossed in a

Also qualifying for the state meet but not earning a medal for Vinita was junior distance runner Josie Simmons and sophomore hurdler Libby Horton. Simmons qualified in the 3200-meter run and Horton qualified in the 300-meter hurdles. The Vinita 4x800 relay team comprised of Miers, Roach, Horton and Simmons also qualified for state but also did not reach the medal stand. With a wealth of talented athletes coming back next season expect Vinita to be a major player in 2016 as they look to defend their title and claim their third first place team trophy in four years.
