By Ben Johnson Karie Linsenmeyer wanted to change things up. And she had a place in mind that she wanted to do it. “I spent 13 years at the junior college level of coaching, and [I] was ready for a change,” she said. “Stillwater has always been the city we wanted to live in, eventually as a family, and the timing was just right.” Talk about killing two birds with one stone. Linsenmeyer did just that. Now the former Northern Oklahoma College coach takes over the softball at Stillwater High School. “The opportunity to coach Stillwater High School softball has been reinvigorating and has allowed me to focus on being a teacher of the game,” Linsenmeyer said. “So, my excitement is over the top and I am honored to coach at Stillwater High School.” Linsenmeyer will take the reigns of a team that posted a 7-18 mark in 2013 and lost two straight regional tournament games to close out the campaign. But the first-year head coach knows she’ll have pieces to

work with. “Halley Randolph is definitely a senior standout that immediately pops to mind,” Linsenmeyer said. “Hally will play at the catcher position and provides the team with much needed leadership. In addition, Hally provides a big bat, (she’s) a top-notch defender and (she) has a college-level arm.” With her roster as a whole, Linsenmeyer hopes to utilize some speedsters that are on the roster. “As a team, we are very athletic and will have great team speed,” Linsenmeyer said. “We hope to utilize those talents to the fullest.” Stillwater will be thrust into a district with Broken Arrow, Owasso, Westmoore and Ponca City among others. But at this point, Linsenmeyer isn’t worried about the team in the other dugout. “We are focused on how we play, not who we play,” Linsenmeyer said. “In order to be the best, we must play the best. We look at our district as a wonderful opportunity to be challenged and improve on a daily basis.” As for expectations, Linsenmeyer just

wants to see continued growth throughout the course of the season. “Our expectations are focused solely on the future and on our growth and development,” she said. “Our goal is to be prepared, to be conditioned and to compete.”

Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Deer Creek Sept. 12 – at Mustang Sept. 19 – vs. Edmond North Sept. 26 – vs. U.S. Grant Oct. 3 – vs. Midwest City Oct. 10 – at Lawton Oct. 16 – vs. Choctaw Oct. 24 – at Putnam City West Oct. 31 – vs. Enid Nov. 7 – vs. Lawton Ike

Quick Hits: The Pioneers have made just one playoff appearance in the past five seasons. Stillwater made the post-season in 22 of the previous 23 years from 1986 to 2008.

Stillwater and Enid will meet for the 21st consecutive year in week nine. The Pioneers have won 15 of the last 18 matchups including a 43-27 win last year. Ponca City drops off the schedule for the first time in more than 30 years. The Pioneers will have bragging rights winning a year ago 41-0 and three times in a row against the Wildcats. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 3-7 2011 – 8-3 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 5-5

OFFENSE With six starters returning to the offense this year Stillwater should feature a potent offense and be tough to stop in the newly formed Class 6A-2. “I couldn’t be more excited about this team. We have a real opportunity to be very competitive and turn some people’s heads,” Stillwater head coach Tucker Barnard said. One big playmaker in the Pioneers offense this year will be wide receiver and VYPE Top 100 selection Brandon Prather (6-0, 165, Sr.). Last season Prather caught 46 passes for 506 yards and four touchdowns. Jordan Brown (6-3, 190, Jr.) will be another big target in the Stillwater passing game after 8

catching 25 passes for 342 yards and four touchdowns in 2013. Other receivers fans can expect big things from this year are Marlon McDonald (5-7, 165, Sr.) and Brooks Zimmerman. Throwing the ball to the two talented receivers on the outside will be athletic quarterback Braxton Noble (6-2, 190, Sr.), who was limited last year due to an injury that allowed him to play in only five games. Despite the injury Noble still completed 82 passes for 1,024 yards and eight touchdowns. Running back Cameron Mayberry (5-11, 195, Sr.) will add a dose of speed and an element of balance this year after rushing for 379 yards and eight touchdowns on 94 carries last season. Up front the Pioneers will turn to DJ Peckham (6-2, 275, Sr.) and Cyntrell Carden (6-0, 232, Sr.) for leadership and an element of toughness. DEFENSE As experienced as the Pioneers will be on offense they will be an even more veteran group on defense with nine starters returning. Leading the Pioneers 4-3 base defense this year will be a solid core of linebackers made up of Mayberry, CJ Citizen (5-10, 205, Sr.) and Trey

Brandon Prather Carter (5-11, 170, Jr.). Last season Mayberry made 41 tackles and seven tackles for loss and Citizen added 40 more stops of his own. Carter meanwhile made 19 tackles as a sophomore and will play a much bigger role this year. Just in front of those linebackers will be a line led by Carden. The athletic and powerful senior made 48 tackles in 2013 including four tackles for loss and four sacks. On the backend of the defense McDonald will be the team’s leader after making 29 tackles as a junior.

Caleb Thomas

Stillwater High School How long have you been involved with FCA? I started doing FCA and going to meetings consistently this past year. I was able to do a lot and had a great time. Who influenced you to join? I had a lot of Christian friends already going to meetings and my first class hour class last year was with Mr. Atkins the FCA sponsor and even though he didn’t push it on us he did let us know a little about it and so he also helped get me involved. I mean I was like donuts and Jesus, why not? How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? For me specifically since I already had a firm foundation in my belief and love for my Savior it has given me an opportunity for leadership helping with several different activities. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? I play soccer and it has helped me have a greater respect for my opponents and understand that it’s just a game. FCA has also been a great way for me to invite a nonbeliever or an immature believer to come to meetings and hear about God and profess to be a Christian. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? I love so many passages but my favorite is probably Galations 2:20. “I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” I love that verse because it paints such a good picture for me to get out of the way and let Christ take the lead. It is nice to know that as Christians we aren’t expected to have all of the answers because God has a plan and a path for us.

By: Joanna Rasp, Sylvan Learning of Stillwater, Oklahoma

In today’s global economy, teenagers are increasingly pressured to obtain collegiate degrees in order to obtain good paying jobs. At Sylvan Learning Center of Stillwater, Jay and Joanna Rasp, co-owners and directors, are frequently asked for suggestions to help teenagers follow a systematic approach to preparing for and transitioning into this next chapter of their lives.

We encourage college-bound students to be as active as possible throughout their high school career. Starting with the freshman year, students can develop impressive leadership skills by joining a sports team, volunteering in the community, focusing on school grades, reading challenging books, taking AP courses and exams, and communicating goals with guidance counselors. In the sophomore year, students should take the PSAT in October for practice. While it is never too early to start visiting colleges, the junior year is a particularly critical time for the college-bound teenager. Junior Year:

Fall/Winter • Take a leadership role within your sports teams, clubs or volunteer organizations. • Register to take the PSAT/PLAN offered in October. • Attend college fairs and open houses in your area. Question school representatives and recruiters about their academic programs, majors offered, application fees and admission deadlines. • Analyze what you want in an institution of higher learning: o Small, medium or large school? o Urban, suburban or rural campus? o Distance from home? o Rigorous admissions requirements (SAT/ACT scores, GPA, class rank, etc.)? o Intended major offered? • Create a first list of schools that meet your personal requirements. • Begin to research national and regional scholarships. Note the requirements and deadlines. Winter/Spring • Concentrate on doing your best in class and seek supplemental assistance when needed. • Prepare for the SAT/ACT by taking a practice test. Or, enroll in a SAT/ ACT prep class. • In January/February, register for the SAT/ACT dates in March-May. • Meet with your guidance counselors to select college prep courses for your senior year. • Plan visits to colleges that are high on your interest list. Schedule campus tours and meetings with college staff. • Request applications from colleges. • Confirm submission deadlines. Senior Year: Fall/Winter • Take the SAT/ACT again. Prepare by using prep books or enrolling in a SAT/ACT prep program. • Create a master calendar that includes: o College application due dates o SAT/SAT Subject Tests/ACT/ AP dates, fees and registration deadlines o Financial aid form deadlines o Recommendations and transcript due dates o High school deadlines for information requests • Narrow down your list of universities to 5-10 and review your choices

with your parents and teachers. • Complete and mail your scholarship applications. • Ask your teachers to write letters of recommendation. Give each person your resume, any required forms and a stamped and addressed envelope. • Write your admission essays. Ask your teachers and families to proofread. Winter/Spring • Submit all applications by December 15. Keep copies of everything submitted. • Send your high school transcripts to your college choices. • Confirm that your applications were received. • Have your parents complete the FAFSA (or CSS Profile) by March. • Students should receive acceptance letters and financial aid offers by mid-April. • Compare financial aid packages from the colleges. • Schedule extended visits to schools where you were accepted. Meet with students and professors in your chosen major. • Inform colleges of your acceptance or rejection of their admission offers/ financial aid packages by May 1. • Send a deposit to the institution you choose. • If you are wait-listed and will enroll if accepted, tell the admissions officer your intention. Ask how to strengthen your application.

perkins-tryon demons Coach: BRUCE WILLIAMS Enrollment: 372

Schedule: Sept. 5 - at Sequoyah Claremore Sept. 12 - vs. McLoud Sept. 19 - vs. Harrah Sept. 26 - vs. Cushing Oct. 3 - at Centennial Oct. 9 - at Heritage Hall Oct. 16 - vs. Mannford Oct. 24 - at Kingfisher Oct. 31 - at Lindsay Nov. 7 - vs. Blackwell Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 5-6 2011- 8-3 2010 – 9-2 2009 – 5-5

OFFENSE New might be the key word to describe the 2014 season for the Demons. It starts with a new coach in Bruce Williams. Although the quarterback will be new as a starter, Zac Bledsoe (6-1, 200, Sr.) saw action in eight games for Perkins last year, passing for 262 yards and four touchdowns. The Demons will abandon the Wishbone in favor of the pistol and other multiple formations. Like Bledsoe, Jacob Peyton (5-9, 175, Sr.) was not a full time starter in 2013, but rushed for nearly 500 yards during the season, averaging an outstanding 8.3 yards per carry. The Demons will need some help in the offensive line with just one starter, Daniel Wall (6-2, 220, Jr.), returning and the receiving corps is inexperienced as well with Jacob Gould (6-2, 205, Jr.) giving Bledsoe a big passing target while providing some key run blocking from the tight end position. DEFENSE Williams will install a 4-2-5 defense this year with some good size manning at least one upfront position as Logan Crotty (5-11, 200, Sr.) will return to a defensive tackle spot for the Demons. An experienced linebacking crew with Peyton (74 tackles), Wall (73 tackles), and Bledsoe (35 tackles) will be the heart of the Perkins defense. Overall, Williams is optimistic in his first year at the helm. “”We’re going to focus on getting better each week and by week 11, I expect us to still be playing.” One other part of the new for the Demons will be a new district as they move to 3A-1 this season. It will be a good news-bad news change in all 12

likelihood as they move out of a district that had state semi-finalist and finalist in Seminole and Blanchard respectively. The bad news is they find themselves in the same district as defending state champion Kingfisher.

Coach: BARRETT SHUPE Enrollment: 477

Schedule: Sept. 5 – vs. Bristow Sept. 12 – vs. Berryhill Sept. 19 – at Cleveland Sept. 26 – at Perkins-Tryon Oct. 3 – vs. Kingfisher Oct. 10 – at Centennial Oct. 16 – vs. Heritage Hall Oct. 24 – at Bethel Oct. 31 – vs. Blackwell Nov. 7 – at Mannford Last 5 Years: 2013 - 8-3 2012 - 8-3 2011 - 7-4 2010 - 2-8 2009 - 3-7

OFFENSE Back-to-back 8-3 seasons capped by first round playoff exits have the Tigers hungry for a deep playoff run this season according to head coach Barrett Shupe. “We are excited about the season. We graduated a big senior class, but we are looking forward to seeing the younger players make plays,” Shupe said. “We need to stay healthy and get better each week. We have had a great summer as a team and need to build on that this fall.” Offensive lineman and VYPE Top 100 selection Colton Farris (6-1, 235, Sr.) is a three-year starter on the offensive line and will be the Tigers’ anchor up front. Matthew Clift (6-0, 225, Sr.) is another player who will be working hard

Colton Farris

in the trenches this year in his second year as a starter. Tight end Tyler Watkins (6-4, 210, Sr.) is another three-year starter who will handle some blocking duties this season but will also be a weapon in the Tigers’ passing game. The maestro of that passing attack will be quarterback Ian Jones (6-2, 200, Sr.) who threw for 1,108 yards and seven touchdowns last season to go along with his 401 rushing yards and four rushing touchdowns. DEFENSE Cushing also has a bevy of defensive players capable of leaving their mark on a game. On the defensive line fans can find both Farris and Clift disrupting plays on a continuous basis. Watkins will start at outside linebacker, as will Josh Houtchins (5-9, 180, Jr.), who made 88 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, four sacks. Cushing will feature Dakota Lee (5-9, 160, Sr.) and Garrett Hunt (5-9, 195, Sr.) at inside linebacker this season after the duo combined for 96 tackles, nine tackles for loss and one sack in 2013. Levi Murray (5-8, 155, Sr.) made 58 tackles and 11 tackles for loss last season and will be another player who sees time at linebacker this year. In the secondary the Tigers will turn to Kyler Patterson (6-1, 170, Jr.) and Blake Burden (5-7, 145, Sr.) to lead the way. Last season Patterson made 66 tackles, had one tackle for loss and broke up three passes. Burden meanwhile added 32 tackles of his own, picked off two passes and broke up four more.

Pawnee Black Bears Coach: Russell Cook Last 5 Years: 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 1-9 2011 - 2-8 2010 - 3-7 2009 - 9-3 Enrollment: 196

Schedule: Sept. 5 – at Morrison Sept. 12 – vs. Hominy Sept. 19 – at Yale Sept. 26 – vs. Blackwell Oct. 3 – at Perry Oct. 10 – at Hennessey Oct. 24 – vs. Chisholm Oct. 31 – at Alva Nov. 7 – vs. Tonkawa

OFFENSE Interest in Pawnee football is swelling to new levels as the Black Bears look to make

Jarred Mitchell this year in Class 2A-1 one to remember. A good group of junior and seniors could be the answer for head coach Russell Cook. “The Black Bears have a new offensive coordinator with a brand new spread scheme. Pawnee is returning four starting linemen, Alex Roughface and Tyler Wilson, both seniors, will provide great leadership up front,” said Cook. “Senior running backs Browning Nicolet (6-1, 190) and Jarred Mitchell (5-7, 170) will be expected to carry the load in the running game. Quarterback Nathan Brock (6-3, 190, Jr.) is expected to be a versatile runner and passer. As for the passing game we have two returning starters, Jacob Miller (6-2, 200, Sr.) and Caylan Biddy (6-4, 180, Jr.), that caught over 90 percent of the passes last year.”

DEFENSE Pawnee returns nine players to the starting lineup on defense. Coach Cook earmarked his linebackers as the key to this defense making stops and creating turnovers. “Senior linebackers Mason Cavett (5-7, 160) and Matthew Campbell (6-0, 175) are the two leading tacklers from last year and are expected to have a good season. The defensive line lacks size, but has quickness and are very versatile. Senior Nick Whitten (61, 180) is expected to be a strong leader upfront for the defense. Senior Grant Giles (6-1, 160) will help lead the secondary,” said Cook. The team motto for the 2014 season is “Don’t Make Excuses.” The team is focused on becoming a better team and meeting goals. 2014 could be a turnaround season for the Black Bears.

Coach: Todd Wilson Enrollment: 494

cleveland tigers the Tigers two solid options in the passing game. John Rodriguez (5-10, 150, Sr.) is another quick receiver the coaching staff has at their disposal.

Schedule: Sept. 4 – at Hominy Photo by Michael Mayberry Sept. 12 – vs. Mannford Sept. 19 – vs. Cushing Sept. 26 – at Vinita Oct. 3 – vs. Catoosa Oct. 10 – at Tulsa McLain Oct. 16 – vs. Miami Oct. 24 – at Oologah Oct. 31 – vs. Wagoner Nov. 7 – at Cascia Hall

Quick Hits: The Tigers season opening series with Hominy will continue for two more years. Cleveland has had things going its way lately winning the last five contests, including 34-13 in 2013. Cleveland takes on Cascia Hall for the first time since 1987 in the season finale. Cushing returns to the schedule for the ninth consecutive year. Cushing’s Tigers won 35-0 in 2013 and have five wins in those eight games over Cleveland.

Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-6 2012 - 9-3 2011 – 5-5 2010 – 6-4 2009 – 2-8

Tyler Myles OFFENSE The Tigers will need to replace quarterback Derek Reeves who leaves the team after his senior season. The team has yet to name the starter, but the competition should heat up in August. One player that is returning, running back Ty Smith (5-7, 150, Jr.) could become the featured back thanks to his speed and quickness out of the backfield. The offensive line will have some new faces starting, but do return AJ Sheets (6-0, 250, Sr.) who did get some experience last year. Also look for Jaden Brewer (6-2, 190, So.) and Maverick Keeler (6-0, 175, Sr.) to contribute up front. Tyler Myles (5-10, 140, Sr.) and Matt Dressler (Jr.) will give

DEFENSE Several players could go both ways for the Tigers this season with Smith playing linebacker and Myles at strong safety. Sheets is another guy that may start at defensive end. Walker Griffith (5-8, 150, Sr.) could be one of the starting corners with Seth Schreiner (5-10, 155, Sr.) at end. Joining Smith at linebacker is Darren Dell (5-10, 155, Jr.) who gained some valuable experience last year. Two defensive tackles to watch are Jake Moore (5-11, 200, Jr.) and Jarad Anderson (5-11, 175, Sr.). Both players could make significant contributions to the overall success of the team. Overall the Tigers can reload with a few younger players and have a chance to compete for a district playoff spot.

Quick Hits: Long-time foe Union drops off the schedule for the first time since 1997. The Wildcats haven’t defeated the Redskins since KTUL sportscaster Rick Pendergraft was a junior in the 1985 season. Ponca City and Guthrie will meet for the 5th consecutive season in week two at Sullins Stadium. The Bluejays have had the better of the Wildcats winning the previous four games by an average margin of 44-8.

The Wildcats have dropped six games in a row against Bartlesville. Ponca City last won 16-15 in 2007. Last 5 Years: 2013 - 0-10 2012 - 2-8 2011 – 2-8 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 2-8

Adam Nicholas OFFENSE With an extremely young team the Wildcats went 0-10 last year and lost every game by at least 24 points. With a much more experienced team this year head coach Josh Allen expects this year’s results to be very different. “We are returning 10 out of 11 starters from last season. We will be a more physical offense this season and run the ball more using more tight ends and fullbacks,” Allen said. “The passing game should compliment the run game well and be solid.” Playing that style of football can only start in one place and that is on the offensive line where the Wildcats are led by guards Israel Washington (6-0, 270, Jr.) and Will Ozbun (5-10, 270, Sr.). The Wildcats also have two key skill position players on the outside in the form of receivers Logan Champlin (6-2, 175, Sr.) and Wes O’Neil (5-11, 165, Jr.). Last year Champlin caught 31 passes for 325 yards and one touchdown while O’Neil pulled in nine catches for 195 yards.

Dick Coates 1968 Wes Nimmo 1971 Doug Johnson 1972 Kevin Ormand 1977 Dannye Webb 1978 Kevin Harlan 1979 Meech Shaw 1987 Tink Collins 1987 Josh Johnson 1995 Rashawn Parker 1995 *Oklahoman All-State Selections

Throwing the ball to Champlin and O’Neil will be one of two quarterbacks who both saw time under center last year. Michael Mongold (6-2, 190, Sr.) got the majority of the snaps last year and threw for 1,175 yards. Conner Larson (6-1, 185, Jr.), who threw for 414 yards last season and rushed for 137 more, is the other signal caller for the Wildcats. DEFENSE The Ponca defense won’t have quite as many returning starters as the offense does; but one big boost the Wildcats will have on that side of the ball is the play of linebacker and VYPE Top 100 selection Adam Nicholas (6-1, 210, Sr.). Last season Nicholas racked up 92 total tackles and will be expected to do that and more this season. The Wildcats also bring back a pair of returners at defensive end this season in Jordan Kimbrell (5-11, 235, Sr.) and Alex Steger (6-2, 220, Sr.). Last season Kimbrell had 36 total tackles and Steger kicked in another 23 total stops. Linebacker Jesse Ford (6-1, 205, Sr.) adds another experienced player at linebacker for the Wildcats. “We will have a tough front seven with a deep group of linebackers led by Nicholas. Kimbrell and Steger also return at defensive line,” Allen said. “The secondary will be solid, but could be young at a couple of spots.” Although the secondary has a chance to be young, Keller Elwood (5-11, 163, Jr.) will help to add a dash of experience in a crucial area. Overall Allen said he has big goals and expectations for this season. “We have a lot of returning players who played 6A varsity football last season. We will have a chance to have a positive season. We are shooting for the playoffs this year,” Allen said.

“It’s not the will to win that matters – everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” Paul “Bear” Bryant

Blackwell Maroons Coach: GRAHAM SNELDING Enrollment: 400

Schedule: Sept. 5 - vs. Perry Sept. 12 - at Newkirk Sept. 19 - vs. Tonkawa Sept. 26 - at Pawnee Oct. 3 - at Heritage Hall Oct. 10 - at Mannford Oct. 16 - vs. Kingfisher Oct. 24 - vs. Centennial Oct. 31 - at Cushing Nov. 7 - at Perkins-Tryon Last 5 Years: 2013 - 0-10 2012 - 0-10 2011- 2-8 2010 – 1-9 2009 – 1-9

OFFENSE The Blackwell Maroons enter the 2014 season on their fifth head coach in the last six years in fact the seniors on this Blackwell team have had a new coach in each season of their high school career. This season Graham Snelding comes to Blackwell by way of Frederick and brings his “Air Raid” offense with him. At quarterback the Maroons will look to senior Sam Schuerman (6-0, 185, Sr.) to lead the way. A multi-sport star whose bluecollar attitude earned him a state championship at the 170-pound division of the Class 3A state wrestling tournament last winter, nobody will be able to question the toughness of the Maroons signal caller this year. Schuermann will also have several speedy, athletic receivers to throw to this season spearheaded by Brady Burtner(6-0, 160, Sr.). Johnny Strahorn (5-9, 150, Sr.) and Christian Wachel (5-10, 170, Sr.) will also be major targets in the passing game this year. Running back Mike McCleary (6-0, 185, Jr.) will add some element of balance to the Blackwell offense this season and also be a threat to get into space by catching sceen passes out of the backfield. DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Blackwell returns nine starters to Snelding’s 3-4 base defense with Schuerman once again heading things up from his spot at outside linebacker. On the opposite side of Schuerman, Zach Brown (6-3, 215, Sr.) will get the nod at the other outside linebacker spot. Just behind the two linebackers Strahorn and Burtner will star in the secondary at cornerback and

free safety respectively. Finally on the defensive line, Blake Husted (6-2, 210, Sr.) will start at end and be the Maroons’ leader in the trenches. Overall Snelding said that in order to be successful they will need to rely heavily on their bevy of veteran players. “We have to play smart football and not beat ourselves. We have a ton of returning experience and we need to use that to our advantage,” Snelding said.

Newkirk Tigers Coach: BOB UNDERWOOD Last 5 Years: 2013 - 3-7 2012 - 3-7 2011 - 8-3 2010 - 9-2 2009 - 6-5 Enrollment: 256

Schedule: Sept. 4 – vs. Crescent Sept. 12 – vs. Blackwell Sept. 19 – vs. Okeene Sept. 26 – vs. Chisholm Oct. 3 – at Alva Oct. 10 – vs. Tonkawa Oct. 16 – at Pawnee Oct. 24 – vs. Perry Oct. 31 – at Hennessey Nov. 7 – at OCA

OFFENSE Operating out of a Pro formation base the Tigers will utilize a balanced attack this year. Quarterback Jaycee Johnston (5-10, 170, Sr.) is an athletic dualthreat under center while running back Colton Sparks (5-6, 150, Sr.) possess the ability and break away speed to take it to the house anytime he touches the football. On the outside, receivers Layne Leven (5-7, 150, Sr.) and Wade Ballagh (6-0, 175, Sr.) will be the biggest targets in the passing game. Leven also can play quarterback for the Tigers allowing Newkirk the flexibility to move Johnston around in several packages. The Tigers did lose some beef up front to graduation but one key player back on the line is Bryen Bloomfield (6-1, 275, Jr.). “We should be a good run team,” Newkirk head coach Bob Underwood said. “The key will be our ability to develop a passing game.” DEFENSE On defense the Tigers will operate out of a 4-2-5 base, giving themselves playmakers at every level. Bleau Stopp (5-6, 165, Sr.)

will start at outside linebacker for the Tigers while Pake Shinn (5-9, 180, Sr.) starts at inside linebacker. Stopp and Shin will operate behind a defensive line led by defensive tackle Trey Hobbs (6-1, 290, Jr.). In the secondary Leven and Sparks will both start at cornerback giving the Tigers great speed on the back end. “We should be strong up front and in the back end. The biggest thing will be the way our linebackers develop,” Underwood said. Underwood added that he is emphasizing one key motto to his players this year and that is “You don’t get what you wish for. You get what you work for.” Asking his players “On November 10th will you be practicing or will you be checking in gear?”

Tonkawa Buccaneers Coach: MIKE KIRTLEY Last 5 Years: 2013 - 5-5 2012 - 5-5 2011 - 4-6 2010 - 6-5 2009 - 15-0 Enrollment: 192

Schedule: Sept. 5 - vs. Luther Sept. 12 - vs. Morrison Sept. 19 - at Blackwell Sept. 26 - vs. Perry Oct. 3 - vs. Hennessey Oct. 10 - at Newkirk Oct. 16 - at Chisholm Oct. 24 - vs. Alva Oct. 31 - at Crescent Nov. 7 - at Pawnee

OFFENSE Last season the Tonkawa Bucs returned to the playoffs for the second-straight year but lost to eventual state runner-up Millwood in the first round. Heading into this year some question marks still loom as the Bucs will be trying to replace 12 seniors who all played major roles on last year’s team. One area that is pretty well lined out is the offensive line where senior Bryan Jordan will lead the way. A state runner-up heavyweight wrestler, Jordan brings a great deal of toughness to his position and has been a

key part of the Tonkawa line for several years. Other players who will play key roles on the offensive line are Blay Cantrell, Josh Davis, Dakota Guerra and Devin Vandruff. Behind that line is where some question marks start to come up. At quarterback junior Tucker Alexander will compete with freshman Rustin Martin for the starting job. According to head coach Mike Kirtley whichever player doesn’t win the job under center will still be in the starting lineup as a receiver. Other questions in the offensive backfield will be who will be the bell cow in the Bucs offense. Chase Pfluger will start at fullback this year and get a good portion of carries while Owen Simpson and Koby Mora both are likely to see some time at tailback. DEFENSE Defensively the Bucs will operate out of a 5-3 front and look to stop the run first and foremost. All of the offensive linemen mentioned above will all also see time at the defensive line with Jordan onc again acting as the general on the line from his spot at nose guard. Simpson will be a key piece of the Tonkawa defense at linebacker this year along with Jared Wickham. Pfluger will also get some time at linebacker but will also put his hand on the ground on the defensive line in some situations. In the defensive backfield Lane Summers, Jonathon Mercer and Alexander will all play crucial roles. Summers and Mercer will also be two of the team’s top receivers this year and bring their nose for the ball to the defensive side of the ball. Overall Kirtley said that he is excited about the potential of his team but did admit there will be some points this season in which their youth shows through. “We are extremely young with a very small senior class. Going into camp we weren’t sure what to make of this team but we had a pretty good camp and I am excited about the young guys,” Kirtley said. “We will go through some growing pains but I think these guys are going to end up being a pretty tough bunch and they are excited to play football.”

OFFENSE It was a tough first year for Perry Maroons head coach Cameron Bennett. His team finished 4-6 overall and 2-4 in district play. For his second season, Bennett and his team are looking to take a step forward and are looking to improve in 2014 with eight starters returning to the offensive side of the ball. Bennett’s offense will be led by wideouts Braden Sweet (Sr.), Braxton Williamson (Sr.), and Drake Dale (So.) and quarterback Dawson Padilla (So.). Padilla will be the team’s new starting quarterback, replacing Cooper Skluzacek, who graduated. Padilla returns after playing all 10 games a season ago. As a freshman, Padilla finished the season with 499 total passing yards, 3 touchdowns, 3 interceptions and completed 35-of-71 completions. Padilla also finished last season with 25 total carries for 21 total yards. As a sophomore, Padilla will use his experience to gain more yards this upcoming season. Offensive lineman Dillon Buck (Sr.), Garrett Beier (Sr.) will look to be top players to look for this upcoming season. As a junior, Sweet led the team with 28 catches for 341 total receiving yards. This season, Sweet will look to double his stats. As a freshman, Dale was second on the team with 16 total catches for 183 yards. As a team total, the Maroons had 795 total receiving yards. DEFENSE Last season, the Maroons had 142 interception yards. This year, with eight starters returning on the defensive side of the ball, look for the Maroons to establish themselves even more. Buck will also lead the defense from his linebacker position with the help of Beier, Dale, Kolby Mendenhall 16

AUGUST 2014

OFFENSE In 2013 Morrison claimed a district championship last season and managed to advance to the Class A quarterfinals before losing to eventual state runner-up Ringling. Led by VYPE Top 100 quarterback Jordan Quinata (5-10, 195, Jr.) the Wildcats are hoping to go even further this year. A dual-threat Quinata ran for 1,400 yards last season and threw for 1,100 more yards in a run-heavy offense last year. This year however the junior signal caller will most likely have more yards through the air as Morrison opens up the playbook allowing Quinata to throw the ball 10-12 more times a game according to head coach Cory Bales.

Morrison also has two other talented ball carriers in Travis Dunn (5-11, 200, Sr.) and Tristan Garringer (6-3, 185, Jr.). Dunn ran for 400 yards last season and will start at fullback in Morrison’s Wing-T offense, Garringer meanwhile will start at running back this year after racking up 400 yards receiving last season. The Wildcats’ talented runners will all work behind a strong offensive line led by center Justin Gum (6-1, 230, Sr.) and tackle Austin Hunsinger (6-0, 225, Sr.).

DEFENSE Many of the same playmakers Morrison will feature on offense will also stay on the field as key defensive players for the Wildcats. Quinata, who never shies away from contact, will start at linebacker for the Wildcats while Hunsiger will start on the defensive line. Dunn will also star on the defensive side of the ball bringing his devastating combination of strength and speed to the defensive line. Trevor Vernon (6-0, 220, So.) will be a young player Morrison counts on heavily this season at linebacker, a position that Bales said his team will need to have several players step up. In a district including teams like

Jordan Quinata Kiefer and Hominy who love to run the ball, Morrison’s ability to find players to make plays from the linebacker spot will be instrumental to the Wildcats’ success. Kenzie Lyons - Ponca City High School Ponca City junior Kenzie Lyons will be stepping into the pitcher’s circle full time this year for the Lady Cats softball team looking to help the team make it to the Class 6A state tournament after coming up just short the last two years.

“Making it to state is my main goal for the season along with continuing to work hard,” Lyons said.

Lyons work ethic doesn’t only apply to the diamond though; she is also a very hard worker in the classroom. Lyons carries a 3.89 GPA and takes honors classes that include Pre AP Algebra 2 and Accelerated English. For her tireless effort to not only become an impact player on the softball field but also her dedication to her studies Kenzie Lyons is the Ponca City Academic Athlete of the Month.

Ponca City Volleyball Poised For Success Head coach Jaimee Miller, with support from the school and its administration has turned Ponca City into a hotbed of growing volleyball talent. Senior Courtney Mullin leads a talented group of girls on the court this season. Mullin will start at middle blocker and is a coach on the court for coach Miller. “She is a team leader and she always wants the ball,” said coach Miller. “She is one of the players we will look to this season for leadership and consistent play every match.” Four-year starter Leslie Wilson is another big hitter/blocker coach Miller will need at the net. Wilson plays hard and uses her athleticism to change the course of a game. “We need to be more consistent and communicate better on the floor. We have the fight and drive to win, but we lack in communication. It’s something we always work on in practice,” said Miller. One player bringing that consistency is senior Blair Didlake. Despite it being her first year of varsity, coach Miller said Didlake is just a good all-around player who brings determination and consistent play to the court. Sophomore sensation Destiny Crowder is one of the top defensive players in the class. 20

Crowder enters her first year of varsity play and is turning heads with her intensity and speed as a defensive specialist and outside hitter. Another sophomore to keep an eye on is Abby Knittel. Knittel will start at outside hitter where coach Miller expects her to make an immediate impact on the teams overall performance. Community support has been outstanding and coach Miller is looking forward to seeing the product they put on the court this season. “It’s astonishing the amount of support we are getting. We have an amazing group of parents. Their fundraising was incredible. We’re going to have door prizes for people that come to our games,” said Miller. “It’s such a tremendous help to have a great group of parents who are willing to do whatever it takes to help the program. And we have a great staff and administration at Ponca City. The support we get from them is outstanding.” The efforts to improve the program do not end with the parents. “Now that

we have a coach at the eighth and ninth grade levels, we’re seeing better skill sets coming into high school. We have 80 girls in the program. This is the most Po-Hi has ever had in the program,” said Miller. Success is measured in wins, but coach Miller is working harder than any coach in Class 6A to prove the Lady Cats can compete against the best and work their way into a top 10 ranking. Where they go from there is up to them.

Ponca City Softball Building the Foundation By BEN JOHNSON

Ponca City is approaching the 20-year anniversary of the last time it was in the state softball tournament. But coach Jared Freeman is hoping to end the long drought with players that were in diapers the last time the Lady Wildcats went for a state crown.
