Davenport Bulldogs – TE/DE HT: 6’5” WT: 207

THE SCOOP: Collins was a major part in guiding Hominy to the Class A semifinals last season. Collins threw for over 800 yards but his real impact offensively was in the run game as he ran for over 1,500 yards. Collins also put up big numbers on defense and was a leader in the Bucks’ secondary.

THE SCOOP: Already committed to play at Oklahoma State, Wolford has all the qualities you could ask for in an offensive lineman. He’s big, strong, physical, and plays the game angry. Last season he led an offensive line that helped Meeker run for 3,596 yards and throw for another 1,418. Considered one of the best prospects in Oklahoma out of the 2017 class expect big things from this road grader this fall as Meeker looks to improve on last season’s 9-3 overall record.

THE SCOOP: Harelson is a player who just gets it done. Doesn’t matter which side of the ball, Harelson will make an impact. Playing tight end Harelson is a major threat in Davenport’s passing attack but he’s also great on defense as a pass rushing end. Harelson already has an offer from Wyoming and more should be pouring in soon.

AUGUST 2016

QB: Zaven Collins – Hominy: Here is a player that both the fans and I agree on. This kid can flat play. He has a big arm that will torture opposing defenses but he also has amazing athleticism that allows him to be a major threat to tuck the ball and take off downfield.

RB: Steve Quinones – Depew: This kid didn’t even crack the top five in the fan voting and that’s a shame. In 2015 he ran for 2,310 yards and 38 touchdowns. Just let those numbers sink in for a second. You get a chance to watch this kid play you better take it. WR/TE: Darrel Arita – Ponca City: You want a big play, you call Arita’s number. He’s a Swiss Army Knife of talent. Over the last two seasons Arita has gained over 1,000 yards rushing and over 600 yards receiving. Arita is electric when he touches the ball and the Wildcats plan to turn the power on fullthrottle in 2016. OL: Adrian Wolford – Meeker: Honestly this was the biggest snub by the fans. Wolford is committed

England Honeybuss

to play at Texas A&M next season. How in the world he didn’t earn enough votes from the fans is beyond my comprehension.

DL: Cade Harelson – Davenport: Cade could’ve made this team as a receiver but I like him as a defensive lineman. Harelson has DI offers from places like Air Force and Wyoming and will probably play receiver at the next level but his speed and athleticism off the edge make him a nightmare for Class B offensive linemen.

LB: Tanner Neeley – Morrison: Another kid who could make this team at multiple positions. He will be the chief ball carrier in Morrison’s Wing-T offense this year at fullback; but he’s got the physicality and mindset you love at linebacker.

DB: Ira Hurst – Bristow: Hurst will start at quarterback for Bristow but I like him at defensive back. He has the athleticism and size to be a great player in the secondary and honestly who is going to be better at reading a quarterback than a fellow quarterback.

QB: Zaven Collins – Hominy: I just can’t say enough about this kid. He was a VYPE Top 100 selection prior to the season and now has a DI offer from The University of Tulsa to go with it. Great choice by the fans. RB: Calvin Boyce – Prague: Boyce is a workhorse of a running back and last year broke the 2,000-yard mark. If he does that again this year you can bank on Prague going deep into the playoffs. WR/TE: Braden Morrill – Blackwell: Morrill can catch anything. His hands are like the sticky stuff

on the back of credit cards. He may be the best receiver to ever come out of Blackwell and should put up great numbers this year.

OL: Trevor Wood – Blackwell: Wood will be a four-year starter on the offensive line for Blackwell this season. That’s incredibly impressive just from a durability standpoint, let alone a talent standpoint. Excellent choice by the fans to get this people-mover on your team.

DL: Parker Gottschalk – Perry: The Maroons will have a very solid defense this year and that all starts up front with Gottschalk. He has the type of size and strength you want plus the mean streak that you just can’t coach. LB: Kory Wiley – Cushing: One of six Cushing Tigers on the Fans’ Choice team Wiley will be a major part of Barrett Shupe’s defense this season. If Cushing has designs on playing for a gold ball Wiley will need to have a big season. DB: Blake Johnson – Blackwell: A senior free safety for the Maroons, Johnson had 72 tackles a year ago. At 5-foot10, 160 pounds Johnson may not be the most imposing figure but he isn’t scared to come up and hit you in the mouth if you dare cross the middle of the field.

Quick Hits: The Pioneers made the playoffs for the second consecutive season, losing in the first round to Sand Springs. A 16-9 overtime win against Muskogee in 2008 is the only Stillwater playoff win in the past ten years. Stillwater has won the last three against rival Enid, averaging 49 points per game in those outings.

The Pioneers have been one of the most consistent teams in Oklahoma, qualifying for the post season in 25 of the last 30 years. Last 5 Years: 2015 - 5-6 2014 - 7-4 2013 - 2-8 2012 - 3-7 2011 – 8-3

Go Pioneers!

Stillwater brings back seven offensive starters this year and although they lack the big name with the DI hype around it they should have a very strong core of leaders that just get the job done.

Jace Brownlee is likely to start at quarterback for the Pioneers this year and brings a major amount of toughness to the position. Brownlee placed fourth at the Class 6A state wrestling meet at 170 pounds last year so don’t expect him to back away from a challenge.

Other key players for the Stillwater offense this year will be Josiah Castlebury and Conner Wilcoxen. Both of those players should get time at running back this year giving the Pioneers a crushing 1-2 punch in the backfield. Another skill player who should have a big year this season is wide receiver Matt Stemm. On the offensive line expect Jake Gray and Stone Mesa to be the two biggest road graders for the Pioneers. Gray will likely start at center this season while Mesa will most likely line up at tackle. DEFENSE

With as much experience as Stillwater has coming back on offense it’s hard to believe that the Pioneers will actually have more experience on the defensive side of the ball. That’s exactly the case however as eight starters return to the Pioneers defense. In the secondary Stillwater will feature Brendan Goad, Garrett Leming and Christian Bahl. With Bahl the Pioneers get a hard hitting safety who will punish you on

Josiah Castlebury the football field and then do the same on the wrestling mat, where he was a state champion last year. Leming meanwhile gives the Pioneers speed and strength on the back end, a player capable of covering the pass and stopping the run. Meanwhile at linebacker look for players like Kadan Gravatt, Adam Martin and Tyler Disidore to all get time.

Cailin Fluty - Stillwater High School

Cailin Fluty is a senior leader for the Stillwater Lady Pioneers softball team. She will be a utility player for the team according to Stillwater head coach Karie Linsenmeyer and will also possibly get some time in the pitcher’s circle this year. “Cailin will help in all areas. Pitching, defense and on the bases,” Linsenmeyer said. Fluty said her three main goals this softball season are to make the state tournament, to beat Broken Arrow and to be one of the top teams in District 6A-4. Away from the diamond though Fluty is very active in her community. She volunteers with Special Olympics and is also a Peer Advocate. As a Peer Advocate Fluty helps her fellow students in whichever class she has with them. Last year Fluty was a Peer Advocate for a Physical Education class so she was able to help fellow students with all the activities those students did in class. For her effort on the field as a leader and off the field as an example to others Cailin Fluty is the Stillwater Character Counts Athlete of the Month.

FEMALE ATHLETE OF THE

MONTH

Hunter White – Stillwater

A senior leader for the Lady Pioneers softball team, Hunter White is a player Stillwater head coach Karie Linsenmeyer will count on heavily in 2016. White is the team’s returning starter at second base and has legitimate potential power at the plate. That power at the plate, among with several other teammates who have some serious pop in their bats as well is a big reason why Stillwater is being mentioned as one of the top offensive teams in Class 6A. White said that praise like that is very gratifying. “I think anytime Stillwater softball can be mentioned as a leader in any category among the other great Class 6A programs out there it’s a honor,” White said. “This team is special. We have speed and power; we can play small ball or hit the long ball. We should put up a lot of runs this year, we will be exciting to watch, that’s for sure.” While her bat and glove may garner her plenty of attention, White said the part of her game she takes the

A division of

most pride in is something else entirely. “I take the most pride in being a good teammate. Hustling and leading by example. Of course I love defense and hitting too, but being a leader and a great teammate will do more for this team than offense or defense alone,” White said. Overall White said she has her sights set on the top prize in the state. “First of all, I’d love to win a 6A state title, that’s the ultimate goal. It takes an entire team and great coaches to make that dream a reality and we have that type of chemistry this year.” For all the things she brings to the table as a softball player, Hunter White is the Stillwater Female Athlete of the Month.

PERKINS-TRYON DEMONS OFFENSE After going 6-5 last year the Perkins-Tryon Demons will look to get back to the Class 3A playoffs behind an offense with veteran leaders in several key spots. Quarterback Autry Westfall (6-2, 180, Sr.) will lead the offense after completing 64 of 139 passes for 834 yards and 11 touchdowns last year. Westfall also ran for 368 yards and six touchdowns on 76 carries last year. Receivers Jaxon Swink (5-10, 155, Jr.) and Aaron Arnold (5-9, 145, Sr.) will be Westfall’s top targets this year. Last season Swink caught 25 passes for 293 yards and three touchdowns. Fellow receiver Donnie Beck (6-2, 200, Sr.) will also be a major contributor for the Demons’ offense this year. Up front look for Cooper Stansberry (6-4, 225, Sr.) to start at left tackle and lead a group of hog mollies in charge of opening up holes for running back Zach Hall (5-10, 180, Jr.).

DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball Perkins will count on an athletic group of linebackers to lead the way. On the inside look for Hall and Landon Mages (5-10, 195, Jr.) to bring an anger and intensity with them as they meet running backs in the hole and

Aaron Arnold receivers who are bold enough to cross the field. Last year Mages made 68 tackles and had four tackles for loss. Hall also had a big year last season with 54 tackles to his credit. Meanwhile on the outside Braden Rush (5-9, 170, Sr.) and Brayden Munson (5-10, 180, Jr.) to make plays all the way to the sideline as players look to bounce plays to the outside. In the defensive backfield look for Swink and Arnold to anchor the back end of the Perkins defense and give receivers fits as they try to work themselves open down the field.

PerkinsTryon FFA Student of the Month Kohl Murray A senior at Perkins, some people may know Kohl Murray as a member of the Demons’ varsity golf team. What a greater portion of the Perkins community may know him for though is his involvement with FFA. In August, Murray will begin his fifth year in FFA and he said that what first got him interested in the organization were the potential opportunities to accomplish multiple things. “Seeing all of the opportunities it had for me, such as meeting new people, expanding my knowledge of agriculture and scholarship were the things that first got me interested,” Murray said. Through FFA Murray participates in several Career Development Events or CDE’s and several Supervised Agricultural Experiences or SAE’s. Those activities include showing livestock, prepared public speaking and proficiency awards. Overall, Murray has said that he has learned and gained many valuable skills through FFA. “It has helped me to meet new friends and has built my leadership skills,” Murray said.

Outside of FFA and sports, Murray is also a member of the National Honor Society. For his efforts in sports, the classroom, the community and most importantly FFA, Kohl Murray is the Perkins-Tryon FFA Student of the Month.

MANNFORD PIRATES OFFENSE Richard Tuberville takes over as the head man in Mannford this year and will bring in an offense that will just as soon spread you out as get under center and operate out of the I-Formation. Tuberville did say that fans can expect more passing this year built on a run-pass option on most plays. Quarterback Landry Wasson (5-11, 170, Jr.) is the athletic player such an offense requires and should be a major weapon this season. Running back Mikey Wells (5-9, 160, Sr.) will be the other skill position player counted on to carry a heavy load of the offense this year. Mannford’s biggest strength however may be its offensive line. Quinton Cook (5-10, 220, Sr.) is one of the bigger players the Pirates will have up front but James Miller (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Conner Hayes (6-0, 185, Jr.) give the team an athletic presence that few teams can match. DEFENSE On defense Tuberville said he plans to incorporate more aggressive blitzing schemes this year. An aggressive defense often starts with a solid mass of muscle on the defensive line and that’s where

indian electric cooperative, inc. www.iecok.com 918-295-9500 Cook and Hayes come into the picture. Cook will be a starter at defensive tackle but able to play all over the line while Hayes will use his speed and quickness to knife into the opposing backfield from his spot at defensive end. At linebacker Mannford will utilize the trio of Wells, Bryce Bales (5-9, 180, Jr.) and Andrew Paquette (6-0, 200, Jr.) to make the majority of the tackles this year. If you dare to attack the Pirates through the air though you better game plan for Kanyen Guffey (5-9, 160, Jr.) at free safety. Guffey has the speed to cover receivers down the field but also the mentality needed to attack the line of scrimmage and stuff the run. “This is an important season for us. With a new coach and a new district, we have to capture the magic and convince these young men and women that hard work pays off in the long run,” Tuberville said.

Area Players to Watch Corbin Shelton - Cleveland At 6-1, 190 pounds Corbin Shelton doesn’t necessarily look like a typical offensive and defensive lineman. Even at the Class 4A level most of those players tend to be above 200 pounds, if not above 250.

But it is his size that makes Shelton a player to watch on both sides of the ball. On offense he has good strength for his size and the athleticism to stop would-be pass rushers in their tracks. Defensively, Shelton’s size again gives him advantage as he works off the edge as a pass rusher who can get off the ball in a hurry and disrupt opposing passers. Shelton is also a senior so he brings plenty of experience and leadership to the table for the Tigers as well.

Quinton Cook - Mannford

Every team needs senior leadership up front and that is what Cook brings to the Pirates. Standing 5-10 and 220 pounds Cook also brings solid size to the trench warfare you get on the offensive and defensive lines.

If you like to see guys get after it up front, Cook is definitely a player you want to watch. He will be a mainstay on the offensive line and on the defensive line in Mannford’s 3-4 front. That scheme also promises to feature multiple aggressive blitz packages according to Mannford coach Richard Tuberville so Cook’s role will become even more vital.

OFFENSE Six starters return to Cleveland’s spread offense this season. Jared Keeler (6-1, 190, Sr.) is back as the team’s signal caller after throwing for 1,850 yards and 11 touchdowns last season. Keeler is also a threat to tuck the ball and run if he doesn’t see anything he likes; a fact he proved last year by racking up 380 yards on the ground. At running back Cleveland will turn to Ben Kennedy (5-9, 180, Sr.) to be the driving force in the run game. Cash Vailes (5-9, 140, Sr.) meanwhile will start at receiver and be Keeler’s top target in the passing game. The Tigers will also feature some strength in the trenches. Seth Wenger (5-9, 235, Sr.) will be the lynchpin up front and will be joined by Jordan Clark (6-4, 225, Sr.) and Corbin Shelton (6-1, 190, Sr.). “We are looking for a big year from our returning starters and a competitive camp as we have some young players who will compete for significant playing time,” head coach Chad Marchino said. DEFENSE With five starters returning on defense

Cleveland will have to mix in some younger players but the Tigers do have the building blocks of a solid defensive unit. In the secondary Matt Creed (5-10, 160, Sr.), David Edgerton (5-10, 145, Jr.) and Jaden Brewer 6-2, 175, Sr.) give the Tigers an athletic group of defensive backs that can cover down the field but also step up to make plays against the run. At linebacker fans will be cheering the likes of Roger Cable (5-10, 165, Jr.). Kennedy will also slide over and play linebacker to go along with starting at running back on offense. Up front the Tigers will be a little green but Shelton will give the team a great, athletic rush end who can really get after the passer. In a tough district that will see the Tigers match up with teams like Tuttle, Ada, Blanchard and Harrah, Cleveland will need to be stout on defense and improve on their average of 26 points allowed per game from a year ago.

Ben Kennedy

PAWHUSKA HUSKIES OFFENSE Pawhuska will be under new leadership this year as Joe Tillman takes over as the head coach of the Huskies. Tillman and new offensive coordinator Ladd Drummond will have the Huskies operating out of a Spread offense this year. Colton Hindman (5-11, 170, Sr.) will likely be the team’s starting quarterback this year but don’t be surprised to see Tyler Wilson (6-0, 185, Jr.) in that spot either. The Huskies will also have a litter of running backs to rely on this year as well. Caleb Bruce (5-10, 160, Sr.), Warren Graves (5-10, 170, Sr.) and Brian Jeffers (6-0, 185, Jr.) make up a Hydra-like monster in the backfield. Even with all of those skill players the biggest difference maker in the Pawhuska offense may be one of the big men doing the dirty work on

the offensive line. John Bighorse (6-1, 240, Sr.) will need to be on the top of his game in the trenches in order to allow Pawhuska’s skill players to do what they do best.

DEFENSE All of the players listed above in the offensive section will all likely see time on the defensive side of the ball. Bighorse will play defensive line and linebacker, Bruce will play linebacker and Graves will line up both at linebacker and safety. Hindman, Wilson and Jeffers will all also get time in the secondary this year. Other key players on the Pawhuska defense this year will be defensive lineman Keenan Cheeves (6-1, 220, Jr.), linebacker ben Gray (61, 180, Sr.) and defensive back Nathan Richardson (6-1, 180, Sr.).

Cleveland Football Forum Cleveland Tigers quarterback Jared Keeler sits down and talks to VYPE about life on the gridiron VYPE: What can fans expect from Cleveland football this year?

Keeler: Fans can expect a high-

powered offense with a lot of scoring. We have a good mixture of underclassmen and upperclassmen on defense too. They are also going to see a team with a lot of young guys that love the game, love to work hard and have tons of potential.

VYPE: Favorite route to throw? Keeler: It’s a tough decision between

a Go route or a Comeback route. I’ll probably say a Go route is my favorite though. Who doesn’t like to throw it deep?

VYPE: Favorite team to compete against?

Keeler: My favorite team to play compete against is Hominy. It’s always fun to crush your rival’s dreams.

VYPE: What do

you feel is your best attribute as a quarterback?

Keeler: I feel like

my best attribute is probably my arm strength. I’ve been known to break a receiver’s finger or two.

VYPE: That’s all the questions but if you want to thank anybody for helping you get to where you are today you can do that here.

Keeler: First of all, I would have

to thank God for giving me the opportunity to live on this great planet. I also would like to thank my parents

for all the sacrifices they have had to make for me and my dream to play football. I would also like to thank my coaches, from little league all the way to now, for always believing in me and teaching me how to become a man. Finally, I want to thank my teammates for sticking with me through the ups and downs of the past couple years. For more of this Q&A please go to our website vypeoklahomanorth. com

CHANDLER LIONS OFFENSE Youth is prevalent on a Lions’ offense that struggled toward the end of 2015. Center Tyler Gibson (6-2, 245, Sr.) is the leader of what will be a rebuilt offensive line. Garret Kline (6-1, 230, Jr.) also could see some time blocking along with a pair of promising young prospects in Chance Sullivan (6-0, 205, Fr.) and Tyler Clagg (5-9, 190, Fr.). The youth movement continues in the backfield. Daniel Jackson (5-9, 145, Fr.) looks like the starter at quarterback. Jackson is poised for his age and has earned the nod at the position with his hard work in the off-season. Jackson has a big target in Tucker Bouchard (6-3, 175, So.), who could line up at tight end or receiver. Brayden Danker (5-6, 145, So.) and Drake Irby (5-10, 155,

w So.) provide quickness as pass catchers.

DEFENSE First year Chandler boss Scott Martin is a veteran of many head coaching stops in the state of Oklahoma. He comes to the Lions most recently from a defensive coordinator post at Paris, Arkansas. Martin will employ a 4-4 front with Gibson, Kline and Bouchard as possibilities at the down positions. Sullivan and Clagg are in the mix to provide depth there as well. Jackson could easily transfer his skills to a linebacker position if he’s not utilized full-time at quarterback. Irby is a projected starter in the secondary. Chandler also has a heavy youth influence on defense which could be a difficult proposition combined with allowing 37 points per game in 2015.

STROUD TIGERS

OFFENSE Behind a solid offensive line Stroud will keep their traditional look of a runheavy style with the ability to throw the ball if you stack the box against then. Moses Williams (6-0, 260, Sr.) will be the leader of that offensive line as the starting center. Gunnar Pike (6-3, 245, Jr.) and Dalton Armstong (5-11, 240, Jr.) will also start on the offensive line this year. Tight end Michael Schmitt (5-10, 225, Jr.) is also likely to be an important blocker but he will also be a big threat in the passing game as well. In the backfield look for fullback Lane McCracken (5-10, 195, Sr.) to unleash plenty of punishment on opposing defenses. Quarterback Cody Paige (5-9, 150, Sr.) is also a threat

to run the ball this year along with being an accurate passer who can stand in the pocket and throw the ball down the field.

OFFENSE The Tornadoes will be undergoing a change at head coach this season with Brandon Blizzard coming over from Watonga, where he spent one season as the head coach. Last season Blizzard guided Watonga to the playoffs after the team had gone 1-9 the year before. Blizzard also has spent time coaching under Phil Koons and Brad Ballard at Tuttle prior to his stint at Watonga. Blizzard has an experienced roster to work with this season, with Drumright returning eight offensive starters. On the offensive line Colton Cargill (5-11, 295, Sr.), Callin Hallman (5-10, 225, Sr.), Graham Gooch (5-10, 215, Sr.) and Tanner Kennedy (5-8, 265, Sr.) are all back and ready to drive the offense to victory. At quarterback Seth Woodward (6-2, 205, Sr.), Brandon Harper (6-3, 190, Sr.) and several others are competing for the starting job this year. Whether it’s

Woodward, Harper or someone else under center you can bank on the two seniors to still make plenty of plays this year in Blizzard’s offense.

DRUMRIGHT TORNADOES

DEFENSE Just like on offense the strength of the Stroud defense will be in the trenches. Williams, Pike, Schmitt and Armstrong will all see quality time on the defensive line this season. McCracken meanwhile is a tackling machine at inside linebacker. Paige is also a player to watch on defense at the safety position. “We have lots of shoes to fill from last year’s senior class and we are moving into a new district which leaves a lot of question marks headed into the season,” Stroud head coach Chris Elerick said.

DEFENSE On defense look for Kennedy to spearhead things on the defensive line with Jake Williams (6-0, 185, Sr.) also playing a big role at defensive end. Woodward brings a high football IQ and a willingness to punish opposing ballcarriers to his spot at linebacker. Meanwhile in the secondary look for Rickashea Gilley (6-0, 150, Jr.) to make plenty of plays at cornerback. “We feel like we have a great chance to compete in the district if we can play disciplined and smart football. I am excited about the hard work and discipline the kids have shown in the offseason,” Blizzard said.

DEPEW HORNETS OFFENSE Operating out of the I-Formation expect a hardhitting power run game if you head to Depew game this year. Spearheading that attack will be Steve Quinones (5-7, 185, Jr.) at running back. Last year Quinones ran for 2,310 yards and 38 touchdowns making him one of the best Class B backs in the state. Lesley Proctor (5-9, 180, Sr.) will also spend time in the backfield as the team’s starting fullback. Other top playmakers to look for this year are quarterback Kody Hilbert (5-10, 205, Sr.) and receiver Tanner Hunt (5-9, 165, Jr.). Up front Garrett Steele (6-1, 220, Sr.) will get

time at both offensive line and tight end. Zac Mounce (6-2, 265, Sr.) is another offensive lineman that will be a major cog in the Depew offense. DEFENSE On defense the Hornets will operate out of a 3-2 front. Steele and Quinones will both start on the defensive line as the two ends. At linebacker, Hilbert and Proctor give the Hornets a physical and athletic duo in the middle of the field. Finally expect Hunt to anchor the back end along with youngster Brody Parrick (5-7, 155, So.) as the team’s top defensive backs. AUGUST 2016

The Cushing Tigers have been a team to beat in the Class 3A ranks for several years. In 2014 the Tigers went to the state finals and were knocked off by Heritage Hall. Last year Cushing finished the regular season 9-1 but was upset in the first round of the playoffs, proving just how volatile the 3A postseason can be. This season look for a big, nasty offensive line to be the trademark of the Tigers. Left guard Hagan Myers (6-0, 235, Sr.) leads that group and will be a three-year starter up front. Riley Coffelt (6-2, 230, Sr.) will get the nod at center as a two-year starter and Jacob Vaughn (6-0, 210, Sr.) will also enter this year as a two-year starter at left tackle. Running behind Cushing’s line will be Kory Wiley (58, 190, Sr.) and Matt Yates (5-9, 180, Jr.). Last season the pair combined for nearly 800 yards and will be expected to play even bigger roles this season. Finally, on the outside look for England Honeybuss (6-3, 185, Sr.) and Trey Morris (6-4, 190, Sr.) to be the chief playmakers for the Tigers. Dalton Hockett (60, 205, Sr.) is a three-year starter and tight end and will be another key target in the passing game. DEFENSE On defense the Tigers will use multiple fronts and coverages to confuse opposing offenses. Up front look for Hockett to get time on the defensive line along with Patrick Viator (6-3, 205, Jr.) and Jared Hubble (6-3, 230, Sr.).

cial pieces of the defensive puzzle. Last but not least expect Honeybuss and Morris to start in the defensive backfield along with Josiah Wright (6-4, 185, Sr.) a three-year starter for the Tigers. “We are excited about the season. We were disappointed in the outcome last year, we want to play better and more consistently this year, coach Shupe said.

OFFENSE Last season Prague made it all the way to the Class 2A semifinals before being eliminated with a 20-13 loss to Beggs. The Red Devils have seven offensive starters returning from that team. That’s the optimistic view. The pessimistic view however is that Prague will be jumping up to the Class 3A ranks this year. The headliner of Prague’s returning starters tasked with helping the Red Devils make the transition to a bigger class as seamlessly as possible is Calvin Boyce (5-7, 198, Jr.). Starting at running back Boyce ran for 2,000 yards last year and will be the bell cow of the Prague offense once again this season. Opening up holes for Boyce this year is an offensive line led by a trio of road graders. Colton Bristoe (6-3, 298, Jr.) started all 14 games last year and is the biggest member of the three-headed monster up front. Seth Cooper (6-2, 260, So.) also started every game of the 2015 season and he will be joined by three-year starter James Hibbard (5-10, 240, Sr.).

Other key players to look for are wide receiver Ray Embry (6-3, 190, Jr.) and athlete Matt Headley (6-1, 195, Sr.). Embry led the team in receiving yards and receiving touchdowns last year while Headly will start on both offense and defense and is likely to compete for the starting quarterback job.

MEEKER BULLDOGS

DEFENSE On defense look for Wolford and Hulstine to team with Chance Bailey (6-1, 230, Sr.) and give Meeker one of the fiercest defensive fronts in all of Class 2A. Last season Wolford had 50 tackles with Hulstine Adrian Woolford adding 42 and Bailey chipping in another 38. Jackson will be the team’s go-to-guy at linebacker after making 92 tackles last year. Meanwhile Jennings will start at corner where he made three interceptions last season.

PRAGUE RED DEVILS

OFFENSE With six offensive starters returning the Bulldogs will lean on a physical run game with a strong play-action pass game. At running back the Bulldogs will feature a three-headed attack made up of Justin Keith (5-7, 180, Sr.), Dakota Jackson (6-2, 210, Sr.) and River Jennings (5-8, 160, Sr.). Last season Keith and Jackson split carries with Keith picking up 536 yards on 66 carries and Jackson earning 423 yards on 80 carries. On the offensive line the Bulldogs will be led by Texas A&M commit and two-time VYPE Top 100 selection Adrian Wolford (6-5, 315, Sr.) and Justin Hulstine (5-11, 250, Sr.). “We are looking forward to the upcoming season. We return four of our five offensive linemen,” coach Nolen said.

DEFENSE On defense Prague brings back six starters and promises to be strong up front with Jacob Vanoster (6-2, 265, Jr.) leading the way on the defensive line. Vanoster has started every game of his high school career and brings a great deal of experience to the defensive line. Defensive ends Ben Wyatt (6-0, 202, Sr.) and Dalton Cooper (6-4, 223, So.) will keep opposing blocking schemes honest this year and unable to double Vanoster. At linebacker expect EJ Zenon (5-9, 187, Jr.) and Austin Chesser (6-1, 193, Jr.) to be the chief playmakers in the middle of the field. Finally, in the defensive backfield Trisan Joergenson (5-7, 160, Sr.) brings some serious ball hawking skills to the team

OFFENSE In Morrison’s classic Wing-T offense you can just bank on a heavy dose of the run game behind a physical offensive line that loves to do their job. This season Tanner Neely (5-10, 185, Sr.) will play the fullback spot and gain the tough yards between the tackles Morrison will need to have. Last season Neely ran for 345 yards and will likely be asked to do even more this year. Tyler Wehrenberg (5-8, 170, Jr.) will fill the running back role this year giving Morrison a home run hitter to go along with the steady production Neely provides. Up front Trevor Vernon (6-1, 205, Sr.) leads a group of linemen who will punish opposing defensive lines who try and impede them. Other players on that line will be Collin Ring (5-10, 195, Sr.) and Blaine Kuehl (6-0, 225, Sr.). Tight end Ben Harmon (6-0, 175, Sr.) is another key run blocker but when Morrison does throw the ball he will be one of the main targets. DEFENSE Morrison brings six starters back to its 4-4 defense this year and will once again be a team who will be aggressive at the point of attack. On the defensive line Ring and Kuehl will be two players fans are used to seeing. Brendon Raper (6-1, 185, Jr.) will also play on the defensive line at defensive end while Mason Swinford (6-0, 235, Jr.) also gets plenty of time up front. 24

OFFENSE Led by nine returning starters the Maroons have a chance to put up big numbers this season. The group of returners is led by quarterback Dawson Padilla (6-1, 170, Sr.) and Santoi Rhodes (5-9, 155, Jr.) at receiver. Last season Padilla threw for 1,724 yards and seven touchdowns. Meanwhile Rhodes caught 58 passes last year for 655 yards and two touchdowns along with carrying the ball 13 times for 92 yards. Liam Clawson (5-9, 170, Sr.) and Terrell Williams (5-9, 185, So.) also promise to be big playmakers on the Perry offense this year with Clawson getting time at receiver and running back and Williams starting at running back as well. Last year Clawson caught 41 passes for 404 yards and one touchdown and Williams carried he ball 109 times for 456 yards and five touchdowns. Other players who will be counted on significantly will be Austin Reyes (6-1, 220, Sr.) at tight end and Jansen Hartwig (6-0, 170, Sr.) at receiver. Reyes was out most

OFFENSE With a returning running back in Kaleb Pershall (5-10, 160, Sr.) the Black Bears will lean heavy on the ground game this year. Quarterback Cameron Powell (6-2, 180, Sr.) is also a versatile threat and will hurt defenses with his legs just as much as he will with his arm. On the outside look for Logan Venable (6-1, 145, Sr.) to be the top receiver for Pawnee with sophomore Luke Roberts also catching a good amount of passes. Last season

of the year in 2015 but still made 12 catches for 191 yards and one touchdown in just six quarters of play. Hartwig meanwhile caught 30 passes last year for 319 yards and two touchdowns. DEFENSE Hartwig, Reyes and Clawson will all also play major roles on defense along with their offensive duties. Hartwig recorded 87 tackles and nine tackles for loss at linebacker while Clawson made 63 tackles and picked off two passes at his defensive back spot. Reyes will also play linebacker made 28 tackles and two tackles for loss in his limited playing time last year. Other key defensive players for Perry will be linebacker Blayze Herlinger (5-9, 180, So.) and defensive tackles Parker Gottschalk (6-0, 275, Sr.) and Bailey Burdick (6-4, 245, Sr.). Herlinger piled up 116 tackles, 16 tackles for loss, one sack and one interception last year. Gottschalk and Burdick combined for 69 total tackles last year, eight tackles for loss and three forced fumbles.

the duo of Venable and Roberts accounted for over 70 percent of Pawnee’s total receiving yards.

DEFENSE On defense the Black Bears have a strong core back this season with seven returning starters. Pawnee will operate out of a 4-2-5 base defense and look to linebacker Cody LeadingFox (6-0, 190, Jr.) to be the general on the field. Defensive lineman Aaron Lieb (5-6, 240, Sr.) also is back this year and will be tough to block up front. Linebacker Shadin Anson (Jr.) will also be a player Pawnee fans should get to know. On the back end look for Pershall and Venable to put their athleticism to use as they patrol the secondary. HOMINY BUCKS

COACH: SCOTT HARMON ENROLLMENT: 162 LAST 5 YEARS: 2011 - 6-6 2012 - 5-6 2013 - 6-6 2014 - 9-4 2015 - 12-2

OFFENSE After advancing all the way to the Class A semifinals last season Hominy returns eight offensive starters to this year’s team and is an early favorite to contend for a Class A gold ball. Leading the Bucks’ offense will be

quarterback and VYPE Top 100 selection Zaven Collins (6-4, 218, Sr.). Last season Collins racked up 2,420 yards of total offense and had 26 total touchdowns. Running back Tanner McElyea (6-0, 180, Sr.) will also be a big playmaker in the Hominy offense this year after rushing for 1,500 yards and scoring 20 touchdowns. Sergio Mendez (5-11, 175, Sr.) should also see time in the Hominy backfield allowing the Bucks to keep McElyea fresh throughout the season. As far as the passing attack goes look for Kolton Reed (6-3, 220, Sr.) to be the biggest threat on the outside with Colt Wilson (5-9, 165, Sr.) working in the slot. Hunter Miller (6-2, 195, Sr.) will also be a go-to-guy in the aerial assault starting at tight end.

DEFENSE On the defensive side of the ball it all starts up front where Braden Sleeper (6-3, 290, Sr.) and Bradley Brown (60, 260, Sr.) give the Bucks good size in the trenches. In the defensive backfield expect Wilson, McElyea and Collins to all make plays on the back end but fans can also bank on cornerbacks Cameron Bills (5-9, 175, Sr.) and Matthew Mullins (5-9, 165, Sr.) to turn the Hominy secondary into a no fly zone. OFFENSE In Blackwell’s spread offense the Maroons will try to create matchup problems and get their skill players in open space as much as possible. Wide receiver Braden Morrill (5-10, 175, Sr.) is the biggest playmaker the Maroons will count on this season. As a junior Morrill, otherwise known as “The Human Highlight Reel” caught 67 passes for 1,040 yards but more than that Blackwell head coach Graham Snelding calls Morrill the best wide receiver he’s ever coached. Isaiah Stafford (5-11, 155, Jr.) will be a nice compliment to Morrill as the team’s number two wide receiver. Last year Stafford caught 50 passes for 500 yards and has big plans to do even more in 2016. Dishing the ball out to the two dynamic receivers will be quarterback Gage Chambers (5-11, 180, Sr.). Chambers will operate behind an offensive line led by Dayne Thomason (5-10, 280, Sr.) who is a four-year starter and a state champion wrestler at heavyweight. Trevor Wood (6-1, 230, Sr.) is another four-year starter on the offensive line and will help Thomason dish out plenty of punishment in the trenches. Dillon Mayne (6-1, 245, Sr.) will also be a key piece of the line as a three-year starter.

BLACKWELL MAROONS

NEWKIRK TIGERS OFFENSE After a 1-9 season last year the Tigers will be turning to a new head coach, but one that is familiar to Newkirk fans. Sonny Schovanec was the head coach in Newkirk for four seasons from 1997-2000 and takes over on the sidelines this year after being the head coach in Oologah for 12 years and most recently spending time on Rick Luetjen’s staff in Hennessey. During his time at Newkirk the Tigers had their best postseason finish ever, reaching the state semifinals in 1998. That season Schovanec had another former Newkirk head coach and current Cushing head man Barrett Shupe at quarterback. Schovanec said that for the Tigers to be successful this year they will need to get a lot stronger over the summer. Doing that won’t be easy but Schovanec is counting on a small group of upperclassmen to step up and be leaders. DEFENSE On defense the Tigers will need to find playmakers at every level if they hope to contend for a playoff spot in a difficult

TONKAWA BUCCANEERS

OFFENSE Last year the Bucs made the playoffs and gave Millwood a good run in the first round but dropped a heartbreaker by a score of 34-27. That game was at Millwood though and this year the Bucs have goals to be playing at Buccaneer Field in round one. “We talked about it at the end of last year. Our goal is to have a playoff game at home. Those are lofty goals for us but we feel like we can do it,” head coach Mike Kirtley said. Leading the team at quarterback this year will likely be last year’s starter Rustin Martin but Kirtley said Cameron Grein has also been competing for the quarterback spot. If Martin starts Grein will still factor heavily into the offense as a receiver. On the offensive line look for Kobe White, Josh Davis, Jacob Begs-His-Own and Devin Vandruff to be the leaders up front. As far as skill guys go look for Brayden Hampton, Camrin “Walt” Pfluger and Anthony Ingmire to all split

DEFENSE On defense the Maroons will bring back eight starters to a ball-hawking 3-3-5 defense. Thomason will start at nose guard and is a player who allows he Maroons to be so aggressive defensively. Last season he had 66 tackles and will chew up blockers and spit them out. At outside linebacker Laecon Barnes (5-11, 175, Sr.) is a player whose name you will hear the PA announcer call each and every week. In 2015 Barnes recorded 89 tackles and five sacks. Blake Bojorquez (5-9, 185, Sr.) will start at inside linebacker and team with Chambers at that position. Last year Bojorquez and Chambers combined for 138 tackles and should be equally as strong this year. Blackwell should also have a playmaking secondary with Simeon Shepherd (6-1, 185, So.) lining up at strong safety and Blake Johnson (5-10, 160, Sr.) lining up at free safety. “We played well at times last year but made far too many mental errors that cost us games. We had a good offseason and spring and have gotten out numbers up and have a good amount of upperclassmen which should give us a lot of experience on both sides of the ball and help with mental errors and depth,” coach Snelding said.

district that will showcase a variety of offenses. Teams like Alva and Perry will operate more Spread offenses while Chisholm will attack with a Wing-T and Hennessey gives good balance with a pro-style offense that will operate out of multiple I-formations and singleback sets. With all that being said it becomes easy to see why many so-called experts won’t have Newkirk in the playoffs. That shouldn’t phase Schovanec too much though, in the previously mentioned 1998 season his Tigers were picked to finish seventh in the district. Can Schovanec capture lightning in a bottle once again? Only time will tell but don’t expect the Tigers to roll over for anybody this year.

carries this year in the backfield. Receivers Christian Hernandez, Jonathon Mercer and Jaydon Meyer should all see some targets this year as will tight end Dallin Hacker.

DEFENSE Tonkawa has always been a team that emphasizes play on the defensive line under Kirtley and that will continue this year. Hacker, Pfluger, Davis, and Cameron Hockert will all see time at defensive end this year. Vandruff and Begs-His-Own will also see time on the defensive line this year as interior linemen. At linebacker Hampton and Meyer will both be key players at the outside linebacker spot. In the secondary Grein and Martin will be the leaders but look for Hernandez and Mercer to also make plenty of plays on the back end of the defense. AUGUST 2016

Quick Hits: While Ponca City hasn’t enjoyed a winning season since 2005, it’s total of six losses in 2015 was the lowest since the 9-2 effort in 2005.

The Wildcats will be looking at some new names and faces on the offensive side of the ball according to head coach Josh Allen.

The offense will also have some familiar faces though. Darrell Arita (5-8, 175, Sr.) is back and will primarily play tailback but will also see some time at wide receiver this year. Over the past two seasons Arita has amassed over 1,000 yards rushing and 600 yards receiving proving he can hurt defenses in multiple ways. Bradyn Pressnall (5-11, 220. Sr.) will also spend time in the Ponca City backfield this season as a more physical presence in the run game. At quarterback Ponca will turn to Brice McDougal (6-1, 175, Sr.) to guide the aerial portion of the Wildcats offense. McDougal’s primary targets this year on the outside will be Trent Fry (6-2, 185, Sr.) and Trevor

DEFENSE

On the offensive line Brent Scott (6-1, 215, Sr.) will be the leader in the trenches for Po-Hi and an important senior presence on an inexperienced unit.

“We feel very confident about this side of the ball. It could be the best defense we’ve had since I’ve been at Ponca,” Allen said. Linebacker Austin Fry (5-10, 210, Sr.), a player that recorded 117 tackles, three sacks and three interceptions last year, and earned All-District honors for his efforts will lead the defensive unit this season. Another All-District player returning to the Ponca City defense will be defensive lineman Jared Kimble (6-2, 265, Sr.).

Filling out the linebacker position will be a Mitch Wilson (6-1, 185, Sr.) and Mitch Neisen (6-2, 185, Sr.). Last season Wilson recorded 75 total tackles and had one interception while Neisen had 87 total tackles,

two sacks, and one interception.

Howey, Arita and Trent Fry will all get time at defensive back this year along Darrel Arita with their duties on the offensive side of the ball. Pressnall will also play some defense this year at linebacker.

Finally, look for Grey Cloud Lieb (6-0, 230, Sr.) to see a good amount of time on the defensive line this season. “We are excited about this season. It has been a great offseason. We will be led by our defense but I feel confident the offense can come along,” Allen said. Photo Courtesy of Ponca City News

Ponca City vs. Enid: The Overlooked Rivalry

The Wildcats and Plainsmen have battled for decades but why doesn't the game get the respect it deserves? By Kyle Kendrick - VYPE Editor People who know me personally know that I’m a history junkie. That carries over into my love of sports. I love to research the history of games, what got them started, crazy stories about off the field antics, all of it. On top of all that I’m a numbers guy. You show me a bunch of stats from some game back in 1989 and I’m going to eat it up.

That all came together this summer when I was asked about what I feel are the best rivalries in the state. We had some polls online for our fans to vote on and got some great responses. The thing is the top rivalry in the North Oklahoma region in my opinion is Ponca City vs. Enid and that game just didn’t

get the kind of attention that I felt it should.

That lack of attention got me to thinking. Why exactly is this rivalry so commonly overlooked? I’ve read any article regarding the best rivalries across the state that I can find. Every one of those lists that I can find leave this game off and honestly that’s a complete travesty. Ponca City vs. Enid is one of the best rivalries in this state. Only games like Jenks vs. Union, Millwood vs. Douglass and Eufaula vs. Checotah can even possibly rival this game.

Don’t just take my word for it. Players and coaches on both sides of the rivalry will tell you exactly why this is one of the best rivalry games around. Ponca senior wide receiver Trent Fry said it as simple as it could be.

“It’s trash talk, it’s cheap shots, it’s mean and nasty and it’s my favorite game of the year!”

Enid receiver Colton Troxell said that he felt like the competitiveness of the game is what makes it great.

“I think the reason it’s a big rivalry is because it’s always a good game and both teams compete until the final second comes off the clock,” Troxell said. Ponca City head coach Josh Allen

described the game as one that just has a certain air about it.

“The Ponca City-Enid game seems to be more physical and has more of an edge to it than any other regular season games we play. The townspeople, players and coaches all want to be Enid. There is definitely an extra energy and focus in what we do that week.”

It’s not just how the players and coaches perceive the game though. This game has a ton of history behind it as well. According to the Tulsa World the game started way back in 1920 when Enid picked up a 20-13 win. Since that date the two teams have played 84 more times with Enid coming up with 52 wins and Ponca winning 29. The other three meetings finished in ties, those games happened in 1927, 1934 and 1974. Overall Enid leads the series 53-29-3 but the two teams have split the last four games with Ponca winning in 2012 and 2015 and Enid taking the 2013 and 2014 contests. Whoever wins this year, one thing is for sure, it will be a great game, full of excitement, big hits, a great amount of dislike between the two teams. Throw all that in a big pot with the history and the attitude that the coaches and players bring into this game and you have the recipe for a great rivalry, one of the best in the state and one that every fan needs to see at least once.

Blake Shepard Award Lauren Champlin - Ponca City

Ponca City head cheer coach Ashley Campbell said she was looking for three things when choosing a captain for her squad. The first was someone who was mature enough to do the right thing but understand everyone makes mistakes and be willing to accept the responsibility for those mistakes. The second was a person who was wiling to be uncomfortable if that is what it takes for the team to get to the next level. And the third was someone who makes decisions based on the team’s needs not their own.

“Lauren encompasses all three, which made choosing her as our captain an incredibly easy decision. Beyond high school, Lauren will go on to do great things. I look forward to seeing her accomplish her dreams,” Campbell said.

Lauren Champlin is known as a senior leader on the For her unwavering dedication to her team and her cheer squad. But that’s such a general statement ability to always put her teammates first Lauren that it almost does a disservice to Champlin. Violet Knowles Ponca City

A senior defensive specialist or libero for the Ponca City volleyball team, Violet Knowles can make things happen on the court. She is a two-year starter for the Lady Cats and ended the 2015 season with a two-point passer rating (out of three). Knowles is also an excellent leader and part of a senior class who has built a great foundation for future volleyball success in Ponca. This year though Knowles said her goals are to really turn Ponca City into a place where people can expect to see good volleyball. “I want our varsity team to make it to state! We’ve gotten so much better over the years and I believe we can make it,” Knowles said. Outside of volleyball Knowles is also involved in the orchestra and plays the viola. Knowles said she has been involved with the orchestra since fifth grade and said she was hooked the first time she saw people perform. “I remember the orchestra came to my school and played some stuff for us; I was absolutely mesmerized. I didn’t find the other instruments very interesting, but I thought the viola was just the coolest thing,” Knowles said. After high school Knowles said she plans to attend Oklahoma State University and major in Interior Design while minoring in business.

Rebuilding a Dynasty Frontier will be young & Hardworking ing,” Frontier head coach Erron Kauk said. “We lost a lot of good players and tons of experience. We only return two starters, so we have to fill several spots with players who are young and lack softball experience.”

The Frontier Lady Mustangs softball team has been a mainstay at the state tournament for what seems like forever. In the past decade Frontier has established themselves as a team to fear, a team that always peaks at the right time and always has great players who are coached exceptionally well.

This season though the Lady Mustangs will be trying to overcome severe losses to graduation and will be trying to continue their dominance with a roster full of young players with not much experience. “The next couple of years we will be rebuild-

That may sound bleak but Kauk added that those young players are good kids with great attitudes and an amazing work ethic. Things that every coach needs, especially when going through a transition in their program.

One place where Frontier will look a lot different than in years past is in the circle. The Mustangs will no longer have a dominant pitcher as they have had the last eight years from with players like Jalissa Gum and Michaelanne Nelson. Instead, this year the Lady Mustangs will have to rely more heavily on their offense and flash more leather on defense to win games. Leading the team this year will be senior

Kristan Molina, who can both pitch and do solid work behind the plate as a catcher. Fellow seniors Tori Harris and Abi Ruff will also need to come up big this season. Harris will start in centerfield for Frontier while Ruff will work the middle infield at shortstop or second base. Junior Hannah DeHaas will be another upperclassman in the outfield as she mans the leftfield spot for the Lady Mustangs.

Young players such as sophomore third baseman Marlene Goodman and freshman first baseman and utility player Aspen Armstrong are also going to get plenty of chances to make their names as the next great Frontier softball player. Sophomores Mady Coy and Riley Mungia along with freshmen Shelby Siler and MyKena Ramirez should also all get plenty of playing time this year. Although the Lady Mustangs will be young, tradition never graduates and that’s why Frontier softball is once again team to watch.
