Brooke Renshaw - Salina South Brooke Renshaw was a standout soccer player for Salina South High School. Renshaw also ran cross country for the Cougars throughout her high school career.

Last season, Renshaw Brooke Renshaw was an honorable mention all-state forward and an all-league first team forward for the Cougars.

Renshaw scored 14 goals on the season, with three assists. She had four games with two goals or more, including a four-goal performance against Ark City. Next year Renshaw will be attending Fort Hays State University and while she is not planning on playing soccer, she is not closing the door on the opportunity to walk on.

Cody Stufflebean was a standout three-sport athlete from McPherson, where he excelled in football, basketball and track and field.

Stufflebean was a first team all-state and first team allleague defensive end for the Bullpups last season.

On the basketball floor, Stufflebean was selected as a first team all-league forward this year.

And finally in track and field, Stufflebean took sixth in the shot put and second in the javelin last season and was surely going to improve on those finishes this season. Next year, Stufflebean will be playing football at Kansas State University.

MaKenna Jueneman was a three-sport athlete for Hanover High School, where she excelled at volleyball, basketball and track and field.

McPherson’s Jakob Feil Jakob Feil was a two-sport standout athlete for McPherson High School where he was one of the top players in the state in football and baseball. On the football field, Feil was selected honorable mention all-state as a running back and was first team all-league running back and kick returner.

Last season on the baseball diamond, Feil was a first team all-league second baseman for the Bullpups. Feil hit .273 with 12 stolen bases and seven walks. Feil was also a back-to-back state champion in powerlifting and he is planning to play football at Tabor University

Canton-Galva’s Kinser Colgin Kinser Colgin is a three-sport standout athlete at Canton-Galva High School.

Colgin played football, basketball and track for the Eagles.

He was an all-league football player for the Eagles, who won the 8-Man Division I title in 2019. Last year, Colgin finished second in the high jump at the Smith

Center regional. At state he took tenth with a jump of 41’5”. Outside of sports, Colgin participated in FCA, Student Council, National Honor Society and FBLA.

Next year, Colgin plans to attend college and play basketball and track.

Salina Central High School Salina Central senior Camryn Phelps was introduced to the sport of tennis by her family an she’s continued to play the sport through high school. “I have been playing tennis since eighth grade and my family got me interested to start playing because my brothers had been playing and my dad played in college,” said Phelps. Being a member of the varsity team has been fun for Phelps and she’s made a lot of great memories.

“What I love most about my team and teammates is that we always had so much fun together. There was never a dull moment and I am going to miss all the amazing memories that we made together throughout these last four years,” said Phelps. “My favorite memory from high school tennis easily is the two state tournaments that I got to be a part of. The entire experience

was so special and fun, and I had an amazing time getting to have that fun experience with my doubles partner, Reagan.” Next fall Phelps will begin college at Kansas University where she will major in Pre-Pharmacy.

Alex Liles - Salina South Fourteen years ago, Alex Liles started her journey in the world of soccer, which led her to play forward for the varsity team at Salina South. Liles loves to play for South while representing the student body on the soccer field. “I like playing for South because nobody expects us to be any good at sports being a small town public school. Being able to prove people wrong is one of my favorite things, but also the soccer culture at South is outstanding. Both girls and boys programs have been supported greatly throughout the years. We are one big family,” said Liles.

To say Liles and her team love playing together would be an understatement. The amount of fight this team has in them is special to watch.

“What I love most about my team is the dedication, determination and fight to be the best. My teammates are my family. We are always there for each other, nobody is there just for themselves. We are all a team and want to make each other better everyday. We always told each other we win as a team, lose as a team and learn as a

team,” said Liles.

Away from soccer, Liles is intensely focused on making good grades even if it means missing out on soccer.

“Academics come before anything else and they always have. If my grades ever started to slip I would always make sure to skip practice and take care of homework and studying before returning to training. After I graduate I will be attending Kansas Wesleyan University to play soccer and study criminology,” said Liles. “My favorite subject has always been history and learning about stuff that has happened in the past and my favorite teacher is Mr. Carlson. He has taught two of my elective classes in the past years. He always has a positive attitude and likes to have fun and is always giving me a hard time about something that we always end up laughing about.” There are many people who have helped

“My biggest influence is my coach Ben Fetherston. He began coaching my club team in middle school and now is an assistant coach at South High. Ever since he has been my coach I have been a whole different player. He always radiates positivity during games while also giving us ways to make our game better. To me that is super important. To be able to have fun with your coach, but also get down to business when needed,” said Liles.

Senior Shoutout 2020 Hannah Goetz & Amber Palen - Sacred Heart Hannah Goetz and Amber Palen have both played volleyball for several years. Goetz started in junior high while Palen has played for as long as she can remember. Throughout high school I mainly played libero but would get moved to setter as needed,” said Goetz. “I played as a setter up until the end of my freshman year and then made the transition to the middle blocker and outside hitting positions my sophomore through senior years,” Palen told VYPE.

The pair loves playing and representing Sacred Heart on and off the court. “I love the chemistry that me and my teammates have. We have known each other for so long because we all grew up together in grade school into high school,” said Goetz. “I love that we were able to have the same team both my junior and senior years; It made our bond that much stronger. We all love the game and have gotten together at sonic to play sand volleyball during the summer and love to just compete against each other,” Palen said.

The pair share many memories together including tournaments, practices, bus rides and fun times on their home court. “My favorite memory from high school volleyball was winning the Ellsworth Tournament. It was a long yet rewarding day that had a few funny moments during some of the games,” said Goetz. “It’s so hard to choose just one favorite memory but I’d have to say that my favorite memory was our final game in the sub-state tournament this year against Ellsworth,” said Palen. Goetz will continue her education at Kansas Wesleyan University where she will play basketball, while Palen will attend Kansas State University where she will study Communication Sciences and Disorders. She hopes to one day work as a Speech Pathologist. Goetz would like a career in nursing.

Sydney Hynes - Ell-Saline Sydney Hynes was the starting catcher for EllSaline’s softball team for two years and would have been behind the plate again this year for the Cardinals.

Last season was going great for Hynes as she had the best batting average on the team, but she broke her fibula in the middle of April. Due to other injuries on Ell-Saline’s team, Hynes was forced to play first base that day and she broke her leg trying to make a catch against a fence. Hynes has a 4.0 GPA and will be graduating as covaledictorian at Ell-Saline. She plans on attending Washburn University, where she has been accepted into their Physical Therapist Assistant Program.

Spencer Whitfield - McPherson Spencer Whitfield is the starting catcher for the McPherson baseball team.

Whitfield was an all-league honorable mention selection last season for the Bullpups, where he hit .260 with ten runs batted in.

Whitfield has played baseball since he was seven years old where at the time he was left-handed. It was that reason he and his father thought he would change positions. That did not happen.

Taeghan Zabokrtsky was a three-sport athlete at Hanover High School, where she played volleyball, basketball and track and field over her four years.

Taylor Bruce from McPherson High School excelled at tennis and softball for the Bullpups.

Last season, Zabokrtsky averaged two points and three rebounds for the Wildcats’ basketball team that had a record of 23-1.

In track and field, Zabokrtsky was a part of Hanover’s 4x100 relay team that took third at the 1A track tournament. She also took third in the triple jump, where she threw 35-09 in the finals.

Next year, Zabokrtsky will be attending Kansas State University to pursue her academic career.

Last fall, Bruce teamed with partner Taylor Bruce CeAnna Allen to go 35-0 en route to the 5A Doubles championship. The Bullpups took fifth as a team.

Bruce was also a first team all-league outfielder for McPherson’s softball team last season. Next year, Bruce is headed to Fort Hays State University to play tennis.

Salina South’s Victoria Maxton Victoria Maxton was a threesport standout athlete for Salina South High School where she played volleyball and basketball and excelled most in the pole vault for the Cougars. Maxton was an honorable mention all-league middle blocker for Salina South last season.

She also averaged four points and six rebounds for the Cougars basketball team this past season.

DRIVE TO ZERO STUDENT OF THE MONTH Drew and Charlie Baird , Salina South Drew and Charlie Baird were standout football and baseball players for Salina South High School. On the football field, Drew started at cornerback and recorded 81 tackles, an interception and a fumble recovers, while Charlie started at outside linebacker and recorded 77 tackles with an interception. On the baseball field, Drew was a first team all-league outfielder for the Cougars. He hit .278 with a .422 on-base percentage. Charlie

was an honorable mention all-league second basemen where he hit .312 with two triples. Off the field, both Drew and Charlie were named to Salina Southâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Honor Roll. Elise Kaiser Hesston High School Senior Elise Kaiser started participating in track at the young age of five. Over the years she has added to the number of events she competes in competitively. “My main race was the 400m dash, although I also ran the 800m dash, 200m dash, 100m hurdles, high jumped for a few years, and I was apart of the 4x100m and 4x400m relays,” said Kaiser.

With so many memories on the track it’s tough for Kaiser to pick one that stands out, but becoming a champion certainly left an impression.

“Last year on the third day of the 2019 state track meet, I became a state champion in the 3A 4x400m relay with my teammates and we broke our school record,” said Kaiser.

Kaiser has big plans for her future, which includes college. “I am attending Newman University this fall to continue my education and basketball

Emma Ruddle McPherson Emma Ruddle was an all-state basketball player and state champion track and field runner for McPherson High School.

Ruddle was an honorable mention allstate guard for the Bullpups last year, while also being named second team all-league. In track, Ruddle has won three state titles and finished runner-up three more times. Last season, she won the 100-meter hurdles and took second in the 100-meter dash and the 4x100 relay.

Smoky Valley’s Lauren Barnes Softball standout Lauren Barnes of Smoky Valley was looking forward to her final season, but it was cut short due to the pandemic. Barnes started playing softball at the age of four and has played competitive softball since the age of 12. “I love everything about my team because we always come together as a whole for the best competition. This year was going to be a whole new team from previous years; it’s unfortunate we didn’t get to compete,” said Barnes. Barnes said being a part of the first team from Smoky Valley to go to the state tournament was her favorite memory her

sophomore year. Barnes was the starting right fielder that year. Now that she is graduating, Barnes will turn her attention to college. “Next year I am attending Bethany College to get my Biology pre-med degree. I just recently committed to also playing softball at Bethany along the way,” said Barnes. The senior has this to say to her friends, teammates and family. “I thank all the girls I’ve played with a coaches that have coached me, including my dad, because without them, I would never have gotten where I am now,” said Barnes.

Smoky Valley’s Matt Lucas

Smoky Valley senior Matt Lucas started playing tennis for his school in the seventh grade, but it was his father that got him involved at an early age.

“My dad has always gotten my brother and I to get out and play since we were five or six. What I really love about the sport is the team environment that I am able to play in. I have great friends that I get to travel with and play against and it makes it much more,” said Lucas. Playing all four years of high school has given Lucas a plethora of memories to take with him after graduation. “My favorite memory would definitely have to be placing third at state tennis my junior year. It was an experience I will never

forget, especially with not being able to participate in my senior year of tennis this memory will stay with me for a long time,” said Lucas. Lucas plans to attend Bethany College and play tennis while majoring in Business Finance. Not playing with his younger will be an adjustment. “I can only really think to shout out my younger brother Jake Lucas. He was my doubles partner the last two years and I wouldn’t be where I am without him. He always remains level headed while I can be a little sporadic with my actions so I have to thank him for the great years of high school tennis,” said Lucas.
