Athlete of the Year Bank SNB has teamed up to grant a $1,000 Scholarship to be presented in the June issue of VYPE. Here is how it will work: • Each month, VYPE will take nominations for an Athlete of the Month and a boy or girl will be elected the Bank SNB Athlete of the Month. This will be a chance for boys and girls of all sports to be recognized for their performances. • Nominees can be mailed to Oklahoma@VYPE. com. Give the nominee’s name, school, sport and reasons you believe the athlete should be awarded the scholarship. • The nominees will need to be seniors this season but keep in mind that their accomplishments as juniors will be taken into consideration as well. • Each monthly recipient will be a candidate for the scholarship that will be awarded in June. • All sports will be eligible to have a nomination. • The male and female athletes who are chosen each month will have a pictured bio, highlighting their accomplishments, placed on this page. Nominees will be profiled in VYPE magazine, but it is not necessary to be profiled in order to win the scholarship.

Bank SNB Scholar Athlete of the Year Maggie Ireton Stillwater High School

Maggie Ireton is the Bank SNB Scholar Athlete of the Year. A recent graduate of Stillwater High School, Maggie Ireton was a previous nominee in the VYPE North Oklahoma magazine for October 2013. “The Bank SNB Scholarship means so much to me. I’ve worked hard to keep straight A’s in high school and even harder to be a good athlete. I love all the different sports I’ve participated in. After moving to Stillwater, the game of volleyball became my life. I’ve learned so much from my coach Jason Webber at Stillwater. He believed in me and taught me to believe in myself.” Maggie has accepted an offer from Northwestern Oklahoma State University where she will play volleyball for the Rangers. “I’ve been blessed beyond measure, that all my teachers and administrators at Stillwater High School care enough about their students and athletes to expect great things from us in the classrooms and on the courts. To have someone outside the school recognize my accomplishments with this scholarship from Bank SNB and is just so amazing, I am very honored and so appreciative. I am looking forward to my years at Northwestern Oklahoma State University and to beginning Pre-Vet Med classes and playing volleyball for coach Gene Krieger. This scholarship is a big help in my new beginning of college life,” said Ireton.

Stillwater Class 6A State Champions By Rex Holt

To come up with a Top 10 list of the best moments of the 2013-14 Stillwater High School athletic year was a bit of a conundrum. In a year of unprecedented success for the Pioneers and Lady Pioneers there were more than enough sports achievements to qualify for inclusion. The problem was with so many special moments, including an incredible three state championships, where do you begin and in what order do rate them. It all begins with a three-way tie for first, of course.

1. WATER WARRIORS – In February, under 25th-year head coach Kurt Goebel,

SHS captured its first boys state swimming crown since 1974 at the new Edmond Schools Aquatic Center Pool. Leading SHS to the Class 5A title were Charles Clark, Ben Cowles,

Stillwater Pioneers tennis player Austin Reed is the Stillwater Character Counts Male Athlete of the Month. Just a sophomore, Reed just capped off a spectacular season last month by finishing in seventh place in the Class 6A No. 1 Singles state tournament. Off the tennis court Reed was also involved in several extra-curricular activities including the Stillwater High School Marching Band. Excelling in bad as well as tennis Reed earned a superior rating at the state level for his trumpet solo. Looking toward next year Reed said that he hopes for more success on the team level most of all. “Next season I want the whole team to get better and have more of them go to state,” Reed said.

A senior at Stillwater this past year, Sarah Carpenter competed at the highest level on three teams, including the Lady Pioneers volleyball, swimming and golf teams. The Lady Pioneers swim team and Lady Pioneers golf team this year. On the volleyball court this year Carpenter played outside hitter and helped the Lady Pioneers to a very successful season in which Stillwater made it all the way to the Class 6A state tournament. The senior was also very involved in extra-curricular activities including student council, FCA, FCCLA, and helping with various church activities. As the StuCo vice president, she co-directed SMAC (Stillwater Makes A Change) which is a school wide fundraiser. This year-long effort benefitted Turning Point Ranch, a Therapeutic Riding Center for kids with special needs. Their goal was $30,000 and they raised over $48,000, doubling last year’s efforts. As another part of her selfless volunteer work Carpenter is spending June in Honduras as a missionary intern at a small Christian elementary school in a low-income, out lying village. In the fall, Carpenter will be attending Oklahoma State University where she plans on majoring in Mathematics with a Secondary Teacher Certification and minoring in Spanish.

Cleveland Track Cleveland distance runner Wyatt Woodrell finished his senior season as one of the top five distance runner in Class 4A.

Class 4A was loaded with good long distance runners this year. The 3200 meters featured Tristan Owens from Oologah, who many considered the favorite, alongside sophomore Zack Black of Sallisaw and Devin Whitewolf of Anadarko. But Cleveland Tiger runner Wyatt Woodrell set a new personal record and placed fifth in the 3200 meters giving Cleveland a spot on the podium.

Wyatt Woodrell

“Running the 3200 is probably my favorite event and I’m glad I got to compete in it the last few years. It seems to get tougher every year especially with the young guys that have came up and really shown everyone who’s boss. This years run I knew was my last and I had to treat it extra special. I started off ranked in 7th place and I knew that wasn’t good enough being that I placed 6th in last years meet. So after the gun went off I just tried to stay in the front pack as best I could for the first mile and create some separation from of the other runners. My plan worked

and I was able to maintain the 5th spot for the remainder of the run running a 10:21, a new PR,” Woodrell said.

Despite finishing out of the top 20, the track team is young and growing, which could mean more success in the future for the Tigers.

“This season we were really young and I believe that led to some struggles in the meets, but one individual that stands about 5-foot really impressed me with his 100 and 200 times, Parker Edwards (FR) ran with an injured back all season and still was one of our top sprinters. I think that our relay teams will also improve and have much success next track season with their age and work ethic. Also I want to give a shout-out to my younger brother Jasper. I hope that he works hard this offseason and makes a state appearance in his time at CHS.” Other juniors making it to state include Maverick Keeler in the discus, Bailey Roe in the pole vault and Hannah Hardin in the discus.

New Era Dawns In Newkirk The Newkirk Lady Tigers Began Playing Soccer This Spring, And Turned A Lot of Heads in the Process

Photos Provided by the Newkirk Herald-Journal The original plan was that Newkirk would start a girls soccer program in the spring of 2015, but as the old saying goes plans change. After an unforeseen opening came up in 4A-4 the OSSAA called Newkirk and asked if they would be willing to begin the program a year ahead of schedule. Newkirk jumped at the chance and even on short notice with little practice time the Lady Tigers made a big splash in the world of high school soccer. Newkirk finished the year with an overall 5-4 record with a 3-4 mark in district play, an extremely impressive mark for a team in their first year of high school competition. In fact the Lady Tigers record was so good this year that they just missed the playoffs by one goal. The performance of the Lady Tigers also far exceeded the expectations of coach Gary Watters. “They definitely met and exceeded any expectations I had for them. Only one girls out of the 18 we had out had played any competitive soccer, the others hadn’t played since they were six

or seven years old,” Watters said. “I am just very excited with the way the girls played. One great thing about it was that I was able to see improvement in the girls every day.” Senior Rian Watters led the team this year scoring 22 total goals and assisting on four more. Those numbers become even more impressive when you realize that Newkirk scored 28 total goals all year, meaning that only two of those goals didn’t involve the senior in some way. For her efforts on the pitch this year Watters was selected to the North region All-VYPE soccer team and was also an All-State selection. Other key players for the Lady Tigers this year were seniors Kyndal Pulley and Courtney Cline. Kyndal’s younger sister McKenna also played a vital role this year according to coach Watters. A dynamic athlete who is also the starting point guard on the Lady Tigers basketball team McKenna will be a key figure next spring

when the Lady Tigers try to build on the success from this year and hopefully make it into the Class 4A playoffs according to coach Watters. “We had a very successful year this season, winning four games and only losing to a playoff team like Classen SAS by one goal. Next year our goal is to build on all of that and make it into the playoffs and be able to give good teams a run for their money,” Watters said.

I really love to base Lexi Smith who has become an awesome flyer. Both Ashtin and Lexi will be cheering at Northern Oklahoma College next year. Finally, Hannah Porter who has worked so hard recovering from injury was named as an OSU cheerleader. I truly love each of these girls to death.”

How long have you been involved with FCA? I’ve been in FCA since I was in the sixth grade.

Who influenced you to join? My friends definitely are a big reason I became involved, and also my youth minister Zac Priest who I have always looked up to.

How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? FCA gives me a feeling of purpose and lifts me up when I feel down. Hearing God’s word through my peers is always inspiring. Also when I’m on the field I know I have my friends to keep me accountable when I get hot headed. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? As a believer in God, I have a purpose to play sports other than the love of the game. I work my hardest because that’s what God wants and deserves from me.

What is your favorite Bible verse and why? I would have to say Colossians 3:23 is my favorite verse. “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for The Lord, not for human masters.” It is basically what I model my work ethic after. If I don’t feel like going hard of this verse and I realize I’m not doing this for just anybody, I’m doing this for God. June 2014
