Harris is serving notice that it plans to be a factor at the 6A State Championship Tournament at the University of Oklahoma’s L. Dale Mitchell Park in Norman (May 15-17). “We believe that,’’ says Harris, who spent the previous eight years as the head coach at Shiloh Christian High School in Arkansas, going to four straight Class 4A State Championship finals and winning three (2010, 2011 and 2012). “We believe that we’re going to have a say in who wins our district and who wins the 6A state championship.’’
The Pioneers, who hadn’t lost since dropping a narrow 6-5 decision at Broken Arrow on March 13, have reeled off a whopping 22 straight victories and sported a sterling 23-1 overall record and a perfect 10-0 mark in District 6A-4 play as of press time for this issue. But SHS, which boasts 17 seniors, is still to face what should be its toughest tests of the campaign was on April 18 and 19 with home-andhome matchups against the mighty Owasso Rams. The two teams split. The Pioneers will also have another battle on April 28 and 29 against the highly regarded Jenks Trojans.
Jon Littell and we’re not trying to make more out of these big games with Owasso and Jenks than they are,’’ adds Harris, a Oklahoma native from Broken Bow. “We know these next four games will decide whether we host or not, but we’re just keeping the same routine and trying to take care of our business and get better every day. “But those games should be fun, we’re looking forward to them. Those games should have a great atmospheres, it’s a great opportunity for these boys.
“Our mission statement is to strive for excellence every day and these guys have done that. It’s nothing I’ve done they just have a great work ethic. They’re also a very talented “We’ve never talked about the streak group and all we’ve done is try to
push them a little harder and keep them focused.’’
SHS has been a complete team all season with solid defense, pitching, speed and plenty of offensive firepower, led by Brooks Zimmerman, a junior third baseman, with five home runs and 30 RBI and senior outfielder Jon Littell, an Oklahoma State University signee, with three homers and 24 RBI. On the mound the Pioneers are deep and talented with Carson Teel (5-0, 0.72 earned run average), Sam Kraybill (7-0, 1.70), Gunner Black (3-0, 1.25), Will Fowler (4-0, 1.78) and closer Nick Hollman (1-1, 0.68, 7 saves).
Harris, who is assisted by hitting coach Jacob Clay and associate head coach and pitching coach Kyle Johnson, adds, “I’m so proud of these boys and we’re all excited to see how all this plays out.’’

Pioneers are an Attractive Sleeper Pick
Gautier Lemaire Coming into the 2014 season head coach Seth Condley knew he had good senior leadership, but needed a few skill players to develop and compete for starting roles on the team. With 15 seniors coming out for the team in 2014, senior leadership wasn’t going to be an issue. Head coach Seth Condley worked to find that perfect mix of solid defenders and skilled ball-handlers to give the Pioneers an opportunity to compete for a state title this year. Goalkeeper Jackson Murphy would be the key to keeping the Pioneers in close games. Big wins over Bishop McGuinness and Yukon early in the season gave Murphy an opportunity to showcase his talents. The 1-0 win over McGuinness and the 2-1 win over Yukon set the pace early. The Pioneers followed that up with a 3-0 shutout of Santa Fe South in the 12

Stillwater Cup. That was followed up with a 2-1 win over Ponca City. Then the Pioneers faced the No.4 and No.3 Class 6A teams in Bartlesville and Jenks. The Bruins and Trojans logged wins over the Pioneers, but coach Condley turned the two games into a learning session and came back strong with a 10-0 win over Sapulpa. Since that win the Pioneers have defeated Enid, 3-1 but dropped a game to No.8 Union, 0-2. The Pioneers look to finish district play strong and make the playoffs. Coach Condley and the Pioneers are improving with every game and could be the dark horse in the playoffs.

So many people are close so there isn’t really anyone left out. Cleveland High School athlete Austin Brownell and Sydney Eddings paused their busy schedule to answer a few questions about CHS, funny moments on the field and their plans after high school. Eddings: I’m in cheer and track.
VYPE: Do you have a nickname?
Brownell: Friends and teammates call me Brownie. Eddings: A few people call me Shmyd.

Lady Cats Golf
Future Looks Bright for Ponca City Girls Golf
Lady Cats Youthful Roster Improving By Leaps and Bounds The Ponca City girls golf team started the year looking like a litter of youthful kittens but as the season has progressed the team has begun to look more and more like Lady Cats. Leading the team this year are juniors Madison Peresko and Kaylee Gillespie. Peresko has filled the spot as the team’s No. 1 bag this year while Gillespie has stepped into the role as the team’s No. 2 bag nicely. Fellow junior Mackenzie Gales has also contributed to the team this year at several varsity meets. Sophomore Ana Subramanium and freshman Megan Wicker have rounded out the Lady Cats varsity squad this season and have both made big contributions as the team’s No. 3 and No. 4 bags. Ponca head coach John Munger said that the team’s youth and inexperience has posed several challenges this season. “One big thing has been just teaching them how to play in a tournament. We have really worked on getting the girls to think about the shot they are
going to hit not just walking up and hitting them,” Munger said. “Other than that we just want them to relax, play smart golf and learn to manage their shots.” Another challenge facing Munger is that no girl on the team focuses solely on golf, something that Munger is very understanding of. “None of my girls are just golfers. They all work very hard on their academics, play other sports, are part of the Po-Hi Steppers or some combination of the three,” Munger said proudly. Although there has been several challenges Munger said one thing about the team has been great since day one. “Just the entire team having a
positive attitude, a willingness to get better and expecting to compete every time out,” Munger said. Moving forward Munger said that the goal for the team is to keep improving every single day as they approach the regional tournament. “If we keep improving and knocking some strokes off our game I think we have a shot to qualify for state as a team,” Munger said. “I think Madison (Peresko) and Kaylee (Gillespie) can qualify as individuals for sure but if we can keep improving and then string some scores together then I think we have a shot at making it as a team.”
“It’s not the will to win that matters – everyone has that. It’s the will to prepare to win that matters.” Paul “Bear” Bryant

Wildcat Tennis Ponca Tennis Teams on Opposite Ends of Spectrum
Boys Team Gunning For Top Finish at State While Girls Build For Future. The Ponca Wildcats boys tennis team finished strong last season by taking home fourth place honors as a team but this year the Wildcats want even more. With four of their top six players returning this season the Wildcats have set their sights on a top three finish as a team and possibly even a state title if things can break right. The Wildcats are led by senior and No. 1 singles player Blake Langston. Langston has filled the team’s need for a No. 1 singles player since he was a freshman when he placed eighth at the state tournament. As a sophomore Langston finished sixth at state and as a junior improved again by finishing fourth overall. “Blake is playing really well right now and is a great leader for our team,” said Ponca boys head tennis coach Brad Larimer. “Hopefully he can repeat the improving performances he has had at the state tournament
the last three years.” Daniel Langston, Blake’s younger brother, is a sophomore and plays No. 2 singles for the Wildcats. The younger Langston is undefeated on the year after losing finishing as the state runner-up at No. 2 singles last year. The odds for Langston claiming a state championship this year look very strong since David Hager, who beat Langston in the state finals last season, is now the top ranked players in the No. 1 singles division. The Wildcats also have a strong No. 1 doubles team as twins Caleb and Aaron Stuemky pair together and give the team a strong chance to score points at the state tournament. At No. 2 doubles sophomore Josh Spires and junior Malik Talib team up to give Ponca another good chance to win some matches at state. On the girls side of things the Lady Cats are building for the future after losing their entire
roster to graduation three years ago according to head coach Larry Williams. Juniors Blair Didlake, Sara Allison, Natalie Baldwin and Megan Carey have all been playng at the varsity level since they were freshman and are now serving as the team’s “building blocks” as the Lady Cats work toward the future according to Williams. “They are kind of like the first bricks in the wall. We almost had to start from scratch three years ago and those juniors have stepped up and really improved each year and are starting to compete and medal at some tournaments this year,” Williams said. Didlake plays No. 1 singles for the team while Carey plays No. 2 singles and Allison and Baldwin team together to play No. 2 doubles. At No. 1 doubles freshmen Gabriella Langston and Taylor Whitefield round out the Lady Cats varsity roster.

How long have you been involved with FCA? I’ve been involved with FCA since the beginning of this school year. Who influenced you to join? My youth pastor, Jerad Joslin, mentioned it at a Wednesday night service and many of my church friends were attending as well. How has FCA made an impact in your life on and off the field? FCA not only brings you closer to God but it encourages you to show God in all you do. Though I may fall at times my main goal is to glorify God whether it be with the game of softball or how I treat others. How have your beliefs helped you as an athlete? My belief in God has helped me out more than anything in softball. I know that God has given me this talent and that all of the glory should go to him. Knowing that I’m the Lord’s servant keeps me going. Glory to God, win or lose. What is your favorite Bible verse and why? John 1:10. “The word was in the world, and the world was made by him, but the world did not know him.” This is my favorite verse because it is a constant reminder that there is still much work to be done for God’s kingdom and that there are so many people in need of Jesus. As followers of Christ we were called to bring these people to him so that they may have eternal life. All Christians have a duty to be a light to those around them. I plan to use my life to glorify God and further his kingdom.
