Hannah Grant - Stillwater Soccer Hannah Grant played center midfielder for coach Joey Parker at Stillwater. This past season, Grant’s play earned her the most valuable player award, and it was well deserved. Grant is a team captain, and her coach said she’s a player that he wishes he could have 22 of. Next season, Grant will play soccer at NOC on a soccer scholarship. She scored seven goals this season, and was a force on the defensive end. Grant said the game that stood out to her the most was the Ponca City game on senior night. The game went into overtime with the score tied 0-0, and Grant scored a header off of a corner kick to win their last game of the season. Grant used to be a multi-sport athlete, but she decided to quit the others to focus on soccer, and it has paid off. She said her teammate, goalie Alona Williams, impressed her every game with her effort. For all of her hard work as a player, leader and person, Hannah Grant is the Stillwater Cancer Center Female Athlete of the Month.

North OK Top 10 The North region brought us some serious highlights this past spring and VYPE recounts some of the biggest ones here. third place at the Class 2A state tournament. The team was led by Cody Hixon who finished in seventh place with a two-day total score of 228.

5. Newkirk girls soccer continues to impress.

1. Ponca baseball makes the state tournament for the first time since 1997. The Wildcats weren’t expected to get there, after all they had to go through defending 6A state champ Stillwater and perennial powerhouse Broken Arrow in the regional tournament, but they got it done. Led by a talented group of seniors including all-state selections Austin Emmel and Blake Shepard the Wildcats proved they were one of 6A’s best teams. 2. Chandler slow pitch finishes as state runner-up.

The Lady Lions are always in the mix for a state title. This year they made it all the way to the state championship before falling to Valliant by a score of 10-4. On their way to the finals Chan-

dler beat Bethel 10-4 and SequoyahTahlequah 9-5. Overall the Lady Lions finished the year 16-16. 3. Coyle girls take second at state track meet.

Everyone knew the Coyle girls track team would be a force to be reckoned with at the Class A state meet. In the end the Lady Bluejackets, led by junior Tyra Aska, finished with 60 team points, behind only Texhoma on the leaderboard. Aska won both the 100 and 200-meter dash at state with times of 12.62 and 26.08.

In 2014 the Lady Tigers burst onto the Class 4A soccer scene with a 4-4 record in a limited schedule. This year Newkirk played a full schedule, went 9-2, finished second in their district and even won a playoff game. With a talented young roster expect the Lady Tigers to become a major player on the 4A landscape in the years to come. 6. Glencoe’s Jenny Baker wins again.

4. Pawnee boys golf finishes in third place.

Three years. That’s how many years Jenny Baker has been in high school and it’s also how many years in a row she has won the discus in class A. This year Baker also won the shot put proving once again that she is one of the most talented throwers in the state.

Pawnee isn’t a place you think about when you think of traditional golf powers but the Black Bears proved they belonged this year by taking

losing in the first round to eventual state champ Valliant by a score of 7-5. Overall the Lady Tigers were 18-10 under head coach Nikki York. 9. Blackwell senior Ireya Calderon wins gold.

Daniel Langston senior Daniel Langston won the No. 1 singles division of Class 6A ending his high school career in style. 8. Cushing slow pitch makes the state tournament.

Before this season the Cushing Lady Tigers only played fastpitch softball. This year though Cushing expanded its horizons and jumped into the slow pitch ranks. In a loaded Class 5A the Lady Tigers instantly became a team to be feared as they battled their way into the state tournament before

Ireya Calderon has been an athlete to watch in the high jump for some time now. This season in her senior campaign Calderon ascended to the top of Class 4A in the event with a jump of 5-04. The win gave Calderon her second medal in the event in the past two years after finishing fourth in 2014. 10. Perry’s Brett Schovanec wins 200

Last year it was Perry freshman Kolby Mendenhall who stole the show and won state championships in the 100 and 200. This year junior Brett Schovanec kept the 200-meter state championship at Perry winning the event with a time of 22.19. With another year yet to go it seems possible that with hard work and

Brett Schovanec the right conditions Schovanec could challenge the state meet record in the 200 at next year’s state meet.

Cleveland Character Counts Maddie Dibernardo - Cleveland Golf

Senior golfer Maddie Dibernardo has spent her high school career at Cleveland High School playing golf and cheering for the Tigers. When you talk to Dibernardo it’s clear she has pride in her school and values the relationships she’s built with teammates.

“Teammates mean more to me than just someone I play golf or cheer with. These girls are my family and I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. Teammates are critical to your success, we spend so much time together everyday and it doesn’t matter if you love them or hate them because they are family. So in the end when its all over I might forget the golf tournaments and the games we cheered at, I might forget the practices that lasted hours, or what the score was, but I will NEVER forget my teammates,” said Dibernardo. Discipline and having good character is a part of being a golfer.

“Good character is how you treat those who can do nothing for you, it is how you make others feel about themselves. Good character says a lot about who you are.” When she’s not on the golf course or working on homework, you can find her working with the youth group at First Christian Church.

After high school Dibernardo plans to attend the University of Central Oklahoma in Edmond and will cheer for the Bronchos as she majors in nursing. But she will never

forget where she came from.

“I remember the hometown feeling that Cleveland High School provided. There was always someone that wanted to help you, no matter what it was you had a support sys-

tem. My favorite memory from CHS would be holing out for a birdie from 50 yards out and then looking at my coach knowing he was proud beyond all belief.”

Frontier Softball Alivia Molina - Frontier Softball Alivia Molina has always enjoyed playing as many sports as she possibly could. In fact, she’s played up to five sports at a time before. The two she enjoys the most, however, are softball and cross country. She says that although she is better at cross country, she loves softball more. “I have always loved playing softball, and just hearing the word makes me want to play,” Molina said. Outside of sports, she loves to spend her time helping those around her. She is a part of a summer program that helps

kids from the second grade to eighth grade. She said she takes as many volunteer opportunities as she can get because she loves to help out. After high school, Molina plans to become an RN so she can work at the OU Children’s Hospital. She said they have had a huge impact on her life, and one day she wants to return the favor. For all of her hard work and contributions to the Frontier community, Alivia Molina is the Frontier Character Counts Athlete of the Month.

The Coyle Lady Bluejackets took home second place honors at the state track meet. team was filled by Adonica and Akilya Sumlin along with junior Shelby Jennings and sophomore Alicia Maker. On the boys side of things the Bluejackets also sent several athletes to state but failed to place in any events.

Coming into the spring everyone felt like the Coyle girls track team had a great chance to finish high at the state track meet. When the meet finally rolled around in May the Lady Bluejackets didn’t disappoint.

Also on the relay teams were juniors Anika Smalley and Moshe Boyles along with freshman Perrier Flannigan. Smalley also qualified for state in the 100 but didn’t place.

In the high jump, junior DeShaun Anderson qualified for state after placing third at the regional meet. Fellow junior Heath Moorman also qualified in both the shot put and discus after placing second in the shot put and first in the discus at regionals. Yet another junior, Ben Scott, also qualified for state in the shot put for Coyle. Finally the Coyle boys also qualified their 4x400-meter relay team. That squad was made up of freshman Chris Carnall, junior Jared Weathers, sophomore Brandon Adams and Heath Moorman. With every single state qualifier on both the girls and boys teams coming back next season expect the Bluejackets to make some serious noise in Class A track in 2016.

Langston Wins Gold Ponca City senior Daniel Langston overcame all obstacles this year and climbed his way to the top of Class 6A

Ponca City tennis player Daniel Langston is no stranger to winning. As a junior Langston went 36-0 and won the Class 6A No. 2 singles title. This season Langston replaced his older brother Blake as Ponca’s No. 1 singles player and kept that winning streak going with a 32-0 season and a state championship.

At the state tournament this year Langston started by beating Robert Maszaros of Bartlesville 6-0, 6-1. Moving to the quarterfinals Langston easily downed Union’s Darien Ghali 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the semifinals. In the semifinal Langston beat Bishop Kelley’s Darryl Roman in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Finally in the championship match Langston knocked off Jenks ace Bennett Hughes 6-3, 6-0.

This summer Langston doesn’t plan to take time off and has already said he will play in several national tournaments.

Ponca City Soccer

The Wildcats and Lady Cats worked hard this spring, and will continue to look for improvement going into 2016. Class 6A is a very competitive group of schools on the pitch each and every year and Ponca City boys and girls teams know this as well as anyone. The Cats and Lady Cats endured great success at times during the year and have continued to lay the groundwork for the future. On the girls side of things the Lady Cats finished the year with a handful of wins. The Lady Cats opened the year with a promising 3-1 victory of Santa Fe South then battled Cushing to a 1-1 tie and had some high hopes for what the year could hold. Those hopes stayed high because even after a loss to Union the Lady Cats beat Guthrie by a score of 6-1 to move their record to 2-1-1. A loss to Bixby saw Ponca’s record fall back to .500 but the Lady cats bounced back again and won back-to-back games in the Stillwater Cup beating Moore 2-1 and then knocking off Stillwater 1-0 leaving the Lady Cats with a 4-2-1 record halfway through the season. The Lady Cats started to face adversity at that point and continued to battle. Competition was at an all-time high and in games where they faced stiff competition, they were always within a goal. Despite not achieving the number of

wins they may have hoped for early in the season, 2015’s wins were an improvement from the previous year. The improvement in the win column and a talented group of young players is a definite bright spot for the Lady Cats and fans in Ponca City. With that in mind expect the Lady Cats to continue improving next season as they set their sights on the 6A playoffs. For the boys team the Wildcats replaced a talented group of seniors with a young and determined crop of players. With a less experienced roster taking the pitch the Wildcats showed

great flashes of talent, ball-movement and team play and will definitely look to be more consistent with that high level moving forward. The Wildcats had great wins over Guthrie, Southeast and Sapulpa. The Wildcats were a battle-tested group capable of staying competitive with some of Class 6A’s top teams. Overall the future of Ponca soccer is extremely bright and fans of the Wildcats and Lady Cats have a lot to look forward to. Young players will continue to develop and both teams will definitely build on the wins from 2015.

Ponca City Baseball The Ponca City baseball team finished strong and made it all the way to the Class 6A state tournament.

20

The year was 1997, Bill Clinton was president, gas cost less than $1.30 and the Ponca City baseball team played in the state tournament. This spring one of those things happened again as the Wildcats made it back to the Class 6A state tournament. At the close of the regular season Ponca was under .500 with a record of 15-16. All that didn’t matter to the Wildcats though. Knowing their best baseball was still in front of them and that they needed just three wins to get to the state tournament the Wildcats entered the regional tournament determined to prove their doubters wrong. A good portion of those doubters quickly stopped doubting the Wildcats after they opened regional tournament play with a 2-0 win over defending 6A champ Stillwater. Senior pitcher Austin Emmel led the way in the win over the Pioneers as he hurled a gem and threw a complete game shutout striking out five. In their second game of the regional tournament the Wildcats used an early outpouring of offense and took down perennial powerhouse Broken Arrow 10-8. After two innings Ponca led the Tigers 6-0 but Broken Arrow battled all the way back and held an 8-6 lead going into the final inning. The Wildcats wouldn’t be denied however and rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh then held on for the win and advanced to the VYPEOK.COM

tournament championship. In the next game Ponca’s road to state hit a major road bump with a 10-6 loss to Stillwater, setting up a third game with the Pioneers, this one with a state tournament berth on the line. In that do-or-die game both teams went back and forth with the Wildcats grabbing an early 6-0 lead but the Pioneers bounced back and eventually clawed their way back to an 8-8 tie. Once again Ponca just wouldn’t be turned away and scored three runs in the final two innings to eventually earn an 11-10 win. Moving on to the state tournament the Wildcats squared off against Westmoore in the first round. Ponca got yet another great effort from Emmel in the game throwing six innings and giving up just two runs and leaving the game with a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately for Emmel and the Wildcats that lead evaporated in the seventh inning as Westmoore plated two runs and won 4-3. Overall Emmel led the team on the mound this year finishing 6-2 on

the year with a 1.79 ERA and 71 strikeouts in 58.2 innings pitched. Joe Clark and Travis Nichols also had big years for the Wildcats pitching staff this year. Clark threw 33.2 innings this year and finished with a 2-1 record while Nichols finished with a 2-2 record in 33.1 innings pitched. At the plate Brian Wicker, Chase Kurtz, Blake Shepard, Wesley O’Neill and Nichols all had productive seasons. Wicker led the team in RBI’s with 38 runs batted in and also blasted four home runs which also led the team. Shephard meanwhile led the team in batting average hitting .375. Kurtz wasn’t far behind that hitting .362, leading the team in extra base hits with 17 and also leading the team with a .483 on base percentage. Finally O’Neill and Nichols both drove in a lot of runs with Nichols finishing with 27 runs batted in and O’Neill racking up 24. Both players also hit over .300 on the year proving they were truly productive at the plate.

Pawnee Boys Take Home Third The Pawnee boys golf team finished in third place at the Class 2A state golf tournament. The tournament was played at the Oakwood Country Club in Enid. The tournament took place on May 11 and 12. The Black Bears qualified five golfers for the tournament, which is incredibly impressive for a school regardless of class size. The Black Bears finished with a total score of 974. A tough third round kept the Black Bears from finishing in third place. After the first two rounds, they were five strokes ahead of Christian Heritage and sat in second place. However, Christian Heritage shot a 305 compared to Pawnee’s 322 in the third round, moving them into second place. Team champion Mooreland shot a higher score than the Black Bears in the third round, but because they had such a low score in the first two rounds, nobody could catch up. On the individual level, Pawnee saw quite a bit of success. Cody Hixon led the way for the Black Bears. He finished in seventh place overall, and played three consistent rounds.

22

VYPEOK.COM

|

JUNE 2015

He shot a total of 153 in the first two rounds, and then finished off the tournament with a 75. Spencer Upton from Tishomingo finished a mere two strokes ahead of Hixon to take sixth place. Robbie Argo finished alone in 27th place, and he needed a few made putts from cracking the top 20. The nine guys who finished in front of him were a maximum four strokes ahead of Argo. Garrison Shears finished tied for 36th place with a total score of

251. He didn’t play as well as he would have liked, but he did play consistently throughout all three rounds. He made great strides throughout the season, and always continued to get better with each tournament. Caylan Biddy finished tied for 43rd place with a total score of 258. After a solid first two rounds, Biddy lost a little bit of control in the third round and it cost him a few spots on the leaderboard. If he can sharpen up his focus, he could make an extreme jump next season. Hadley Jensen finished in 51st place with a total score of 265. He was a few putts rolling his way away from cracking the top 50, which would’ve meant all five of Pawnee’s golfers finished in the top 50. Jensen made extreme strides throughout the course of the season, and the future is bright for this group of hard working kids. Coach Mike Wilkinson has brought these kids a long way, and the future is bright for the Black Bears. If they continue to follow his direction, they will make a run at the state title for many years to come. Pawnee will continue to lower that score each day they step out onto the golf course.
