After the NWOK and SWOK high schools represented like champions in 2011, we look forward to seeing another fantastic year.

The Hennessey Eagles return a good amount of players and will look to defend their 2A state championship yet again this year. Kingfisher and Watonga will be extremely competitive in their respective classes, while Woodward, Shattuck, Laverne, Clinton, and Enid will be posing stiff competion in all classes of Oklahoma high school football. Don’t forget the Southwest Oklahoma side of things as the three Lawton schools will be competing for state championships. Lawton Mac made it to the state title game last year and returns Darius Graham and many seniors to take care of unfinished business. D.J. Ward left transferred from Lawton, but the Wolverines still reload a talented squad to compete in 6A. After a year of bringing the good people of SWOK the VYPE Oklahoma brand, we continue the coverage of student-athletes, coaches, and high schools throughout the 2011-2012 school year.

OFFENSE With nine returning starters back on the offensive side of the ball, the Bulldogs are looking like a serious offensive threat. Running back Diquon Woodhouse (5-11, 190, Sr.) was named to the VYPE Top 100 team for his speed and his ability to gain yards that don’t seem possible. Woodhouse is an incredible runner who gives the Bulldogs an advantage in the running game. Brantley Ford (6-0, 180, Sr.) returns as the quarterback of the Bulldog offense. Ford makes great decisions running the multiple read offense. Wavintre Yada (5-8, 170, Jr.) brings his own flare to the running back position. Demauri Randall (5-9, 170, Sr.) will stretch the field for the Bulldogs from his wide receiver position. Randall is quick and has good hands. The offensive line features Cedrick Jamison (6-0, 205, Sr.) at tackle. Nico Maldonado is a legitimate option at tight end in the passing game. Eric Perez (5-10, 200, So.) is another player expected to contribute to the offense. “In struggling through an injury plagued season in 2011, were forced to play many underclassmen. Now those underclassmen have worked hard in the offseason and have experience to boot. “Depth is a major concern as we are still trying to build our program, but I feel good about the progress we have made to this point. I’m ready to see us at full strength,” said coach Stone. DEFENSE “We will pride our defense on flying to the

football. Our strength should be against the pass with our back seven. We return starters at 6 of those 7 spots and all have good instincts and run well. Bobby Martinez (5-5, 215, Sr.) is undersized but a playmaker upfront,” said Stone. Patrick Carnes (5-11, 180, Sr.) and Keilan Torres (5-10, 165, Sr.) are two linebackers the Bulldogs are looking to for big stops. Jamison is another linebacker with high expectations this season. Woodhouse will slide to corner alongside Yada at free safety. Special teams will play a big role this year for Altus with one of the best kicker/ punters in the state. Michael Perez (5-11, 155, Sr.) is a three-year starter and as coach Stone would say is “automatic from inside the 45.” Perez averaged over 40-yards per punt and his kickoffs have improved insuring the opposing teams will need to go 80-yards for a touchdown. Chris Rogers (5-10, 180) is the “heart” of this team and will push for playing time on defense and special teams. Rogers is the first in the gym and the last to leave the fieldhouse. Altus should battle for a playoff spot this season, but the district is loaded with some serious talent.

Quick Hits: The Bulldogs haven’t recorded a postseason victory since the 2001 season. Altus went all the way to the finals in ‘01 losing 28-11 to Carl Albert. Altus and Vernon, Texas have met in the Bulldogs’ season opener every year dating back to 1991 (teams met in week 2 that year). Since 1992, Vernon has won 11 of the 20 meetings, but the Bulldogs own a current three-game winning streak.

Altus has faced all three Lawton Public Schools in each of the last six seasons. The Bulldogs are just 2-16 in those contests with the last win coming against Lawton Ike in 2008.

The Boomers will play an “aggressive, attacking style of defense,” according to coach Sevris. Kyler Ferguson (6-0, 193, Jr.) is one linebacker opposing offenses must account for. Ferguson is quick and loves to hit. Kota Taylor (6-0, 203, Jr.) will come off the edge quick at defensive end and turn everything back inside. Defensive tackle Marc Gomez (5-9, 205, Jr.) is a bulldog in the middle of the line. Tough to block, Gomez can penetrate and cause all kinds of problems in the backfield. A 4-3scheme is what coach Sevris is planning on running, but expect to see multiple sets depending on the situation. Overall the Boomers appear to be one of the top teams in the district and a deep run into the payoffs is possible.

Head coach Darris Sevris returns five starters to the offense this season, mainly at skill positions. However the offensive line returns a couple of key players as well. “We lost several outstanding players last year. Looking for our young guys to step up and fill those positions. We are excited so far with the leadership and hard work,” said Sevris. Micah Kee (6-0, 187, Jr.) will alternate at quarterback and running back, while Jake Hughes (6-1, 167, Sr.) will do the same sharing time at quarterback and wide receiver. Kaleb Roach (6-4, 175, Jr.) is a big wide receiver who can sky for jump balls or beat you by battling for position. The two linemen expected to anchor the front are Ryan Minshall (6-0, 205, Sr.) and Braton Cloyd (6-3, 187, Sr.). Both are excellent blockers who love to road-plow the defensive line. Family Ties in Western OK Volleyball Schools Family ties connect three schools through mothers and daughters, sisters and coaches. This matrix of family and volleyball is a product of one coaches desire to stay close to home and coach, despite her sister still playing in their hometown. But the volleyball matrix is much more involved than that!

The communities of Weatherford, Clinton and Cement are experiencing something few towns rarely experience. It’s common to see a coach at the high school level coach their own offspring. But what happens when a coach is competing against her own sister and the assistant coach is competing against her own daughter? That’s the case for four individuals that accept the circumstances and are ready to give their best for their squads.

Weatherford High School volleyball coach Vannessa Geheb is originally from Cement, OK. It’s common for head coaches to play their Alma Maters, but it’s even harder when you add her sister to the equation. Tori Pierce (Sr.) plays for the Cement High School volleyball team as one of the starting setters for coach Kim Seibold (more on coach Seibold later). “I’m the head coach for Weatherford and my sister plays for Cement. She’s a senior this year,” said coach Geheb. Regardless of the family ties, both want to win for their teams. Both also want to see the other succeed. “It’s weird because I’m used to her (Vannessa) coaching me from the bench or stands. I miss my biggest fan cheering me on,” said Tori. Volleyball is in the blood of these ladies. Their mother, Victoria Mink-Pierce was part of the state runner-up

Cement team in 1984 and a member of the state champion teams of ’85 and ’86. “It’s good to see the family tradition carry on and go one step farther with my girls playing in college. I couldn’t think of a more proud moment than having both daughters represent their teams in the state tournament this year,” said Victoria. Weatherford assistant coach and head junior high volleyball coach Sheila Eddy (Class of 1988 from Clinton) understands what it means to have a loved one playing on another squad. Her daughter, Katy Eddy plays up front and back right for Clinton Junior High. Like coach Geheb, coach Eddy will coach against her hometown of Clinton, OK and her daughter. “Clinton and Weatherford schools are huge rivals, so me coaching at Weatherford, is complicated for some, including some of my own family members, who have even made some interesting facebook posts,” said Eddy. “Both, Katy and I, are very competitive. Katy has been wrestling with the Clinton Pee Wee Club for the last three seasons, as well as competing in “Girls Only Tournaments” for the last four seasons. Wrestling is a long season and sometimes it was Katy, my other daughter Allison and I driving to several tournaments to compete alone or with her pee wee team, while my husband Mike was working. We’ve left with smiles, crying, frustration, etc., it has always been a challenge to wrestle with boys because there is still an overtone of “girls” shouldn’t be wrestling. Katy has grown some tough skin, to deal with all the “talk.” The three teams center around this family feud (joking of course), are ranked after a couple of weeks of play. Clinton is No.3, Weatherford is ranked 10th and Cement comes in at No.13 according to OKRankings.com. To make matters even more personal, Cement head coach Kim Seibold is the former coach of Vannessa Geheb. I would however like to point out that as far as we can tell Clinton head

During the recent Cameron University tournament Cement faced Weatherford in a game that matched sister vs. sister. One on the court and one coaching from the bench, but once the ball was served it was easy to tell that both sisters put on their game faces and were all business. After the game the two shared a hug and went back to being sisters. Who got the best of who wasn’t as important as both showing the mutual respect and love for the job they’re doing on the court. “We still share the love of the game no matter which bench we’re on. No matter what we still wish nothing but the best for the other ones team, unless were playing each other! Then we both want to win,” coach Geheb said. “She pays attention to see if I’m teaching my girls the same stuff I taught her and I’m watching her making sure she’s still doing what I taught her. We hope to coach together one day and develop a volleyball power house.” Coach Eddy and Katy Eddy will relive these moments as Katy is only in the seventh grade. So you can expect more family feuds on the court in the future. When the season is over and they’re no longer on the court the family ties will remain and volleyball will be but one reason why those family ties are so strong.

Kingfisher

Grant Newton #1 – Kingfisher vs. Hennessey Sept. 14th @ Hennessey What to look for – The two Highway 81 rivals have been a mainstay in the title hunts for Classes 3A and 2A over the past few years with Hennessey seeking a third straight gold ball and Kingfisher reaching the finals twice in four years. Both team return massive experience and the runningbacks will star in the game. Hennessey will rely on Levi Hill while the Jackets will feature junior stalwart Landon Nault. Though the teams have only played the last two years in the recent past, there will be some fireworks at Hennessey on September 14th.

Kingfisher Outlook Coach Jeff Myers is excited about his offense this year as all skill position players return. Leading the way for the Yellow Jackets Spread formation is Grant Newton at quarterback and carrying the load at running back for the third year will be Landon Nault. The strength of the offense will be the line, anchored by Mitch Henderson along with Cole Cameron. The defense will be strong up front and in the secondary in the 4-3 look coach Myers runs. The linebackers will need to learn on the run but have plenty of potential. On the line, Kaden Jackson is an up and comer that may make an impression this year. Henderson will join Jackson on the line. Look for Gatlin Squires to make an impact on the defense as well, along with Cameron coming across the line and

Levi Hill playing some defensive end. Tyler Shepard will be looking to fill a linebacker spot along with Blair. The secondary looks experienced and fast. Keaton Ely will be lining up at one of the defensive back positions along with Nault. Jared Hendrix will be the finishing out the secondary at cornerback. Hennessey Outlook New coach Rick Luetjan takes over a team that is rich with experience. The Eagles will counter with senior Levi Hill who has the chance to be the all-time leading rusher in Hennessey history. Junio Pina will be a playmaker on offense as wel. The entire left side of the offensive line returns with senior Kale Hajek leading the way at guard. Junior Joel Martinez is back at center with Javy Renteria at tackle. On defense the Eagles are big and strong on the defensive line. Leutjan will continue to platoon most of his interior players with seniors Trevor Dowell and Cale Shimanek at end. Aguirre and Renteria will be used some on defense at tackle as the situation dictates. Junior Carlos Franco joins the fray at linebacker with Pina and senior Steven Lott at cornerback. Lawton High and head coach Randy Breeze has plenty of speed and is ready to stir up something special for the rest of Class 6A. That’s where we will begin with junior Ivan Thomas. Already offered by Kansas State, Thomas rushed for 672 yards through four games before his season was cut short by a torn ACL. Thomas was clocked at 4.6 in the 40-yard dash and simply is a nightmare to tackle. The size on the line is provided by senior tackle Ryne Yost. Junior Dallas Sealey and sophomore Jack Meservy were locked in a battle for the starting quarterback spot that was too close to call emerging from spring drills. Tevin Foster is a legit gamebreaker at receiver while wideout Casey Nadeau and tight end Nick Pyfer are also viable targets on offense. Defense could be the biggest factor in Lawton’s chances to make a run at the state title. The 2011 unit allowed 20.5 points per game, which was up from 13.5 in 2010. The 2012 edition of Wolverines should lower its predecessors numbers significantly. Senior Ben Scott moved in from North Carolina during the summer. Junior Taylor Wattenbarger was in on 89 tackles as a sophomore at linebacker. He’s a standout wrestler who locks on to opposing runners and always finds a way to get his man on the ground. The secondary revolves around the tandem of Maurice Chandler and Foster.

Starters return at nine positions on an offense that is most experienced up front. It’s also one of the biggest offensive lines that Eisenhower has fielded in some time. Three-year starter Dennis Pletcher is joined in the blocking efforts by fellow seniors Aaron Williams, Tyrin Green and Mark Bannon. Copeland envisions a balanced offense but thinks this edition of Eagles will throw the football more. Junior Randy Green and sophomore Bentley Bross are in competition for the starting spot at quarterback. Green has good speed and can move around in the pocket. Senior Ricky Alexander is one of the fastest players on the team. Eisenhower will also be large across the defensive front. Seniors Antonio Harris and John Mitchell will make it difficult for the opposition in the trenches. Add in Williams and Pletcher from the offensive line and you have a very formidable and imposing interior. Junior Dakota Young has shown much potential and could have a special season as he gains experience.

The Rivalry

The Wolverines will look to bounce back from a loss to Mac last year (21-14). Lawton did upend Ike 61-14 while Mac took the sweep be also beating Ike 21-14., while the Eagles topped Mac in a close one 31-28. Plenty of athletes will see the field this fall and all teams will be factors in their respective classes.

Lawton Mac Coach: Brett Manning 2010 Record: 13-1 Lawton MacArthur and coach Brett Manning are coming off a near perfect season in 2011. The only blemish on their record last season was a loss in the class 5A state finals. Quarterback Ricky McCarty has been in the system for three years but will get his first shot at leading the offense this season. McCarty won’t have to do it all on his own though. Running back Darius Graham (6-1, 218, Sr.) is back for one final go round. Graham is a powerful running back who has rushed for more than 3,000 yards in his

career and will definitely be playing on Saturdays next season. Caleb Kunze will lead the offensive line into battle each week. Malcolm Batchelor and Miguel Rosario will be McCarty’s top two targets when he drops back to pass.

The Highland defense returns four starters from the 2011 squad. Derek Block is a talented defensive end that will lead. On the second level, linebackers Jake Smith and Mitchell Fritts will be the coaches on the field, directing traffic and calling out coverages. In the secondary, Anthony Burris is a shut down corner that will be tasked with covering the opponent’s top wide receiver. Adrian Gaines is a free safety that is aggressive and hard hitting. Sarah DeLong Sarah DeLong was a senior at Elgin High School and was named to the West AllState golf team where she represented her school and the west side of the state at the state golf tournament. In the new format DeLong was teamed up with McCann from Anadarko and their combine score helped the west win the match, 15-9.

Cache High School Jada Vernon Jada Vernon (Jr.) is a varsity volleyball player for the Cache Lady Bulldogs. Jada is extremely talented on the court and as an outside hitter is one of the top hitters in the class. Look for Jada and the Lady Bulldogs to continue to their path to a winning season.

Maurice Chandler enters his senior year at Lawton High School as one of the more highly recruited players in the state. Chandler has several Division-1 offers on the table, but is focused on helping the Wolverines to a memorable season. Only a junior, Randy Green has made his presence felt offensively with his ability to play multiple positions including wide receiver and quarterback. Green and the Eagles are poised for a comeback season in 2012 and Green could be the man the lead the charge.

Ricky McCarty Ricky McCarty is the starting quarterback for the Lawton Mac Highlanders and is expected to have a great season as he enters his final year for coach Brett Manning. This season is McCartyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first year as the starting QB, but heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ready for the challenge and the coaching staff is excited to see what he can do.

Garrett Gaunt #3 – Weatherford vs. Clinton Sept. 21st @ Weatherford What to look for – The Red Tornadoes of Clinton enter the 2012 season as the top team in district 4A-1 and the overall No.1 pick in Class 4A. The runner-up finish in 2011 left the Red Tornadoes hungry for more. Garrison Mendoza will lead this team alongside junior Devin Mitchell and Michael Adams. The Clinton offense has the horsepower to put up some serious points, but it’s the defense led by Mitchell, Bo Bowell and Ben Radke that has the people talking. Weatherford is a top 10 team in Class 4A, predicted to finish second behind Clinton in the district. Junior quarterback Garrett Gaunt is back and could be the difference for the Eagles. Gaunt has a big target in Brady Boyd and a productive running game with Darian Malone and Jason Nickels. Weatherford has two hard-hitting linebackers in Matt Hoffman and Joe Leon who plan on stopping Mendoza and Mitchell. Mark your calendar for Sept. 21st, this one’s for all the marbles in 4A-1.

Weatherford Outlook Coach: Mickey Seifried Record: 6-5 With eight returning starters the Eagles are looking like one of the teams to beat this year. Quarterback Garrett Gaunt is back after a sophomore campaign where he tossed 11 touchdowns and completed 92-for-141 attempts. Gaunt has a big target in wide receiver Brady Boyd, a dual threat player capable of running the ball if necessary. Running backs Darian Malone and Jason Nickels are like thunder and lightning. Malone brings his speed to the table, while Nickels has the power. The offensive line is always a big key in the running game and Weatherford has a good group of players upfront including Jake Fuller. “We have several returning starters on both sides of the ball and we are excited about the upcoming season,” said coach Seifried.

Garrison Mendoza The Eagles return Matt Hoffman and Joe Leon. Hoffman accounted for 163 tackles and three interceptions last year, while Leon had 132 tackles of his own.

Clinton Outlook Coach: Mike Lee Record: 12-2 Quarterback Garrison Mendoza heads into his senior campaign coming off a season where he had 1,800 plus yards passing to go with 18 touchdowns. He will get one of his good young targets back in junior Devin Mitchell, who had 31 catches in 2011. Leading the big men up front on offense will be junior Grant Lee, who has a chance to be one of the best in school history, and senior Michael Adams. Also, look for senior fullback Aaron Lustfield (5-10, 210) to continue to open up some running lanes out of the backfield. Mitchell will continue to man the defensive backfield from one of the safety spots and Lee will continue his disruptive ways off the line. Junior Ryan Richert looks to start back where he left off during his sophomore season. Richert was flat dominant from his hybrid OLB/DE position where he amassed 80 plus tackles and caused headaches whether he was standing up or had his hand down. Bo Bowell will be moving from linebacker to the other safety spot. Look for juniors Ben Radke and Donievon Brown to move into full time starters this year at their respective positions, D-line and linebacker.

#4 – Ardmore vs. Duncan Oct. 5th @ Ardmore What to look for – District 5A-1 foes Ardmore and Duncan are scheduled to play on October 5th at Ardmore High School. Will the home field advantage help the Tigers this season? Picked to finish fourth in the district, Ardmore is looking to upset Duncan who is picked second in 5A-1. The Demons return 10 starters to the offensive and defensive side of the ball lead by Bryan Bradbury and John Jones in the trenches. Ardmore will look to QB Jeff Surrell and WR Carter Swanson for big plays.

Weatherford Outlook Coach: Doug Wendel Record: 8-5 Doug Wendel’s first season with a roster including 22 seniors. “There’s no hiding the fact we’ve only got three starters coming back,” said Wendel. “But, rest assured, I’m optimistic about this year. Every one of our players still has high expectations.” Jeff Surrell, described as a “natural” athlete by Wendel, will lead the offense at quarterback. The Tigers will have big play potential at wide receiver boasting the talents of Carter Swanson and Devin Reynolds. Elijah Clay, Braxton Whatley, Daylon Baker and Brandon Heminway. The Tigers will share running game duties showcasing the talents of Devron Roberts and Andrew Clark. The Tigers defense was paramount to the success in 2011 and Wendel expects to do the same this season. “Our defensive line is where we have the most experience,” said Wendel noting the play of the two returning starters Darious Lawson and Elijah Clay. C.T. Roan and Brandon Heminway will be counted upon at inside linebacker.

Duncan Outlook Coach: Jim Holloway Record: 8-4 Coach Jim Holloway will have five returning starters on the offensive side of the football. The offensive line looks to be stacked and ready to protect the quarterback and open up holes for the running backs. Leading the charge on the offensive line are seniors Caleb Longest and Bryan Bradburry and junior Daniel Moore. Also important in the blocking scheme is fullback Logan Gadbow. Tight end Andrew Peercy is a reliable blocker and pass catcher over the middle. On the outside wide receiver Ryan Haley, who was injured last season, is small and quick. On the other side Jack Braught is a tall, ball control receiver who the Demons will look at to keep the chains moving. The Demon defense returns five starters from last year’s squad and the defensive line looks to be its strength. Defensive ends John Jones and Cameron McGill will give offensive lines fits on the edge and Derek McKnight is a big defensive tackle that will look to stuff the opponents’ run game. At the second level Cody Merrill leads a talented but inexperienced group of linebackers that will need to grow up quick. Tanner Norton brings loads of experience as he started every game last season. #5 – Seiling vs. Laverne Oct. 26th @ Seiling What to look for – Two heavyweights out of district B-1 are on a collision course to determine who will claim the title of district champ. Seiling features one of the best players in Class B in Buster Horn, but also look for Thomas Sander and Jacob Gore to contribute. Laverne and head coach Tim Allen return QB Seth Overstreet and Tucker Hickman. The two should combine for some serious yardage this year. The Tigers are one of the top teams in Class B and could find themselves playing for a title this season, but first they must get through Seiling and that Wildcat defense. Seiling Outlook Coach: Brad Spurlock Record: 8-5 Seiling is coming off a successful 2011 campaign that saw them reach the quarterfinals of the Class B state playoffs. First year coach Brad Spurlock will look to a veteran offensive line led by guard Ryan Sander (6-3, 295, Jr.) to continue last year’s success. Flanking Sander are two talented tight ends, Thomas Sander (6-2, 205, Sr.) and Jacob Gore (6-5, 215, So.), that will try to get this team’s run option game going by opening up holes for senior tailback Buster Horn (5-8, 170). Horn is coming off a fantastic 2011 season where he rushed for 1,630 yards and scored 27 touchdowns. Horn was named to the VYPE Top 100 for the 2012 season. Coach Spurlock expects his defense to be “aggressive and hard hitting. We will look to stop the run first and make our opponents one dimensional.” Leading this aggressive defense are senior corner backs Kalieb House (5-8, 165) and Ryan Manning (6-0, 188). Laverne Outlook Coach: Tim Allen Record: 11-2 Head coach Tim Allen went 11-2 last season and after 15 years of coaching at Laverne coach Allen has the experience and the talent to continue this proud tradition of winning football. The offense will be based in the T-formation and Seth Overstreet (6-2, 200, Sr.) should be the signal caller at the helm. Overstreet is experienced and well prepared for the job. Running backs Tucker Hickman (5-11, 190, Sr.) and Trevor Harris (5-9, 155, Jr.) give the Tigers two excellent options in the running game. Dalton Birch (6-0, 190, So.) had an excellent freshman season and returns to plays some fullback and help protect Overstreet in the pocket. Defensively the Tigers are solid with many of the offensive starters playing defense. Cordell Burlingham (6-2, 230, Sr.) is a big athletic football player who can put his hand on the ground or stand up and play the end. Gage Murphy (6-0, 190, Sr.) may play linebacker where he can deliver those punishing hits and stop the run. Overstreet and Hickman may play in the secondary or at linebacker.
