Another School Year Coming To A Close It’s hard to believe yet another school year is about to come to a close. May is graduation month and the end of the season for spring sports. For me personally it means attending a graduation for the seventh year in a row, except this time I’ll have one taking that all important walk across the stage. My oldest daughter Katelyn has earned her diploma and is looking forward to starting college in the fall. Obviously in my job I get a chance to witness the best championship games and memorable moments that make up every high school sports season. But the most exciting event I’ve attended was watching my daughter win her second state championship while participating in band. To the Class of 2012; enjoy life, question everything and never stop making your life and the lives of others around you better. This issue is packed with spring sports wrap-ups. Baseball, soccer, tennis, golf, track and slow pitch softball have completed their seasons and VYPE’s own Lynn Jacobsen has the final say on the state tournaments. The All-VYPE teams are announced in this issue for each of the spring sports. Find out who impressed and who made the list. The All-VYPE teams are selected by members of VYPE and recommendations from coaches.
Don’t forget to contact us at Oklahoma@vype.com with your rants and raves about the magazine. Follow us on twitter @VYPEOK and on facebook @ VYPE Oklahoma. Thank you to our photographers and writers that help make this magazine the best sports publication in the state. See you at the game!

Darlington Domination Lady Chiefs show they are the best.
The Darlington Lady Chiefs were the O.R.E.S. tournament champions earlier in the spring. VYPE salutes the Lady Chiefs on a great season and was present at the seasonending banquet. Darling Middle School is coached by Mr. Mike Pierson, who was awarded the Coach of the Year Award. The girls played 20 games and were undefeated (20-0). The team averaged 45 points per game with their opponents averaging only 24.
In the O.R.E.S. playoffs the girls beat their opponents by at least 20 points per game and were dominant throughout. The team had the Most Valuable Player, and two players on the tournament All-Star Team. Ramona Pierson was MVP with Candace Pierson and Zhoonie Sherman on the All-Star Team. Congratulations to the Lady Chiefs of Darlington Middle School.

Golf Recap 2012
Duncan Boys - 5A
Class 6A Edmond North set a state record for consecutive state championships, winning its eighth consecutive title this spring. The Huskies finished with an 894 team score after rounds of 300 and 293 on the first day and a 301 on the final day of competition.
Four of five Edmond North starters finished in the Top 10, led by Nick Heinen with a 217, second overall to low medalist Max McGreevy of Edmond Santa Fe. Others to register Top 10 finishes included Hayden Wood (219), Sam Humphreys (228) and Michael Hampton (230). Freshman Tyson Reeder finished with a 242. “We’ve had a really good run here,” Edmond North coach Jeff Doherty said. “This is the first year in last three (that) I really felt like we were the best team. My kids just feel like they can win. It’s gotten to be an epidemic. They go out and just don’t think anyone can beat them. They’re not cocky, just very confident. They just feel like they can’t be beat.” As a team, the Huskies shot 5-under par on the first hole of the final day of competition, with an eagle from Reeder, a par from Humphreys and birdies from Hampton, Heinen and Wood.
“That was huge way to start,” Doherty said. “It was just a barrage.” Edmond Memorial finished second with a 921 score, followed by Jenks with a 936, Edmond Santa Fe with a 947 and Broken Arrow, fifth overall with a 954. In girls, Union successfully defended its Class 6A crown, cruising to a 25-stroke win over runner-up Edmond North. The Lady Redskins fired back-to-back rounds of 303, led by Emma Allen and Anna Kim, who each finished tied for second at 149. Edmond North’s Allison Sell was low medalist with a 147 score.
The Lady Redskins had four players finish
Anadarko Girls - 4A
in the Top 10 with Nadia Majidi and Erica Carangalan at fifth and 10th, respectively. Majidi shot rounds of 76 and 75 to finish with a 151 and Carangalan celebrated her 18th birthday with a 158 overall. Union won 19 of 20 events the last two years under head coach Lindsay Jones. And with only Carangalan graduating, the Lady Redskins look to continue their domination.
“Last year we won state by 21 strokes and this year by 25,” Jones said. “Top to bottom, 1-5, we have arguably one of the top teams in girl’s golf in Oklahoma.”
Ardmore’s Jacob Oaks won a playoff for low medalist honors, finishing with a 221 scorer. El Reno’s Logan Gray was second followed by Murphy in third place with a 234.
Altus’ Megan Blonien shot a 67 on the second day to finish with a two-day 142 total and her fourth consecutive state title. Duncan captured the team title with a 650 score, five shots ahead of 2011 team champion Bishop McGuinness.
In the 10 victories this year, Union won by an average 20.3 strokes. A year ago, Majidi missed qualifying for varsity. This year, she won or tied for the win in six of the 10 tournaments in which Union played. “She’s had a great year,” Jones said. “She worked really hard in the off-season and played really well this year.”
Jenks finished third followed by Broken Arrow in fourth and Mustang in fifth place.
Class 5A
Will Murphy’s eagle on the first hole of a playoff lifted Bishop Kelley (963) to the 5A team title over Shawnee (963). Rounding out the Top five was Edmond Deer Creek (972) third followed by Ardmore (982) and Durant (991). “We were competitive all year long so I would be lying if I said we weren’t expecting to compete,” Kelley coach Shawn Lawhorn said. “We tracked the West team scores and felt like we had a chance. Will is really a tough kid. He played linebacker for us and gave that up to focus on golf. He’s a team leader. I think it surprised him that he played that well. His chip-in was difficult. Andrew Alonso, our only senior, birdied the same playoff hole.”
Altus Girls - 5A Edmond Deer Creek had four golfers finish in the Top 10 with Caroline Goodin (5th with a 155), Emily Folsom (6th with a 156) and Abby Thompson (7th with a 157) to finish third overall. Altus was fourth followed by Coweta and Lawton MacArthur tied for fifth in team standings. Alexis Sadeghy was tied for the lead with Guthrie’s McCandren Lewis after opening round 74s and finished second and third individually.
Class 4A
Trent Mewbourn saw his five-stroke lead slip after Day 1 but the Heritage Hall golfer held on for low medalist honors with a two-day 207 total. His score helped Heritage Hall capture the team title with an 869 score. Teammates Michael Helton and Gavin Mastell also finished in the Top 10. Helton shot a two-day 218 score to

Elk City Boys - 4A finish tied for sixth while Mastell was tied for ninth with a 219 score. Elk City finished second at 876 followed by Ada third at 883 and Cascia Hall fourth with a 906. Metro Christian, Clinton and Weatherford were tied for fifth with 913.
Hannah Ward and the Poteau Lady Pirates captured the school’s first golf title, winning Class 4A with a whopping 21-stroke victory. Ward had rounds of 76 and 74 for a 150 low individual score. The Lady Pirates opened the two-day tournament with a 356 team score then added a 364 on Day 2 to clinch the team title with a 720. Anadarko was a distant second at 741, followed by Hilldale in third place with a 747. Cushing finished fourth with a 751 score followed by Fort Gibson fifth at 766. Bristow’s Kayla Schroeder finished second individually with a 158 followed by Elgin’s Sarah Delong and Weatherford’s Darby Morgan tied for third with scores of 163. “We’re very excited,” Poteau coach Randall Wheat said. “This is the first team title for any girls sport in 33 years.”
Hinton - 2A
Class 3A Oklahoma Christian won its fourth consecutive title. After winning three straight in 2A, the Saints moved up to 3A with the same result. Oklahoma Christian held a 12-stroke lead after the first day of competition.
Idabel’s Nick Stauter took individual honors with a 213 score. Okmulgee’s Jackson Hess was second at 214. Oklahoma Christian had three golfers finish in the Top 10, led by Rustin Purser, third overall with a 218 score. He was joined by Alex Hall and Zac Schaefer, both who finished tied for fifth. Zana Crowson and Sylvia Volonte registered Top 10 finishes to lead Comanche to its second consecutive golf title. Volonte fired a 168 to finish eighth and Crowson shot a 171 to finish tied for 10th. Idabel’s Madelyn Lehr took home low medalist honors with rounds of 77 and 79 for a 156 two-day total. Megan Gowens of Purcell and Ashton Gores of Plainview
shared second place with a two-day 160 score.
Class 2A
In its first year as a member of the OSSAA, Rejoice Christian captured the 2A title behind medalist Justin Strathe, who shot a 219 score. Rejoice trailed after the opening day but shot a low round 313 on the final day of competition to finish with a 963 score. Hinton finished second at 965 followed by Laverne third with 1,034. Liberty and Burns Flat rounded out the top five.
Oktaha was going for its fourth straight title, but fell three strokes shy as Hinton eked out the title with a 699 team score. Oktaha finished with 702 followed by Turner in third place at 716. Rejoice Christian finished fourth behind the play of individual champion Katie-Lee Wilson. The junior followed up her opening round 75 with a 72 for a 147 two-day total. Rejoice finished with a 759 team score followed by Washington in fifth place at 766.
